hello! @mercurygray is hosting Blind Dates again this year and i knew i just had to take part in this event again because it is by far one of the things i enjoyed most on here last year! this year, i wanted to do Band of Brothers again, and i wanted to experiment with a character you really don't see often AND a perspective of an OC that i felt would be an interesting mesh! i wrote the beginning months again for something else and decided to move forward with it and i really like how this came out; the ending, i'm a bit shaky with, but today and tomorrow offer me a WHOLE LOT of schoolwork to do and next week at school is bound to be busy so i wanted to get this out now! it's a bit longer than i intended but it works for the story! thank you merc for hosting this event; i was really excited to take part again and work on an OC i had in my mind for a bit! thanks and enjoy! :D

apple pie and paratroopers

For once the little town of Aldbourne, nestled in the grassy hills of the countryside of England, lay in both a quiet yet desolate morn. By this point, the roads would've been filled with members of the paratrooper division that had arrived just a month ago, either marching around in their olive drab, names stuck on a sticky little patch they put on the right breast, or adorning clean white shirts, starched and pressed by duty of the military, as well as dark, navy blue shorts with a little symbol sewed on the corner, running in small packs as early as 6:30 in the morning. Even on the spare chance, they were returning from Birmingham or the nearby town of Swindon after a late night in one of the social clubs, half awake, their sleepy eyes blurry and tired smiles spread on their lips, their Class-A's disheveled and unbuttoned.

Yet this morning, the roads were fairly empty, even by eight o'clock, even as the sun was finally showing on the stone pathways and paved roads and women were out hanging fresh laundry to dry or children were finally dressed with shoes on their feet, running down the street, kicking a lumpy football onto a grass field. Civilians bustled about their normal routine, as if relieved for once that there was not an American motorcycle zipping through the streets, revving the motor, or the loud and quite obnoxious voices of them bouncing off the side streets or cobblestone walls. It was quiet. Oddly quiet.

Normally, a few of the Land Girls would be huddled against the wooden fence post, leaned up with either their beige overalls or brown twill breeches, green sewn scarves by one of their mothers braided into their hair, whispering and giggling amongst one another as the All-American paratroopers strolled the streets of their hometown, occasionally letting a glance slide towards the group that stood there, before continuing on their way.

Winnie had always thought the Americans' company in their small town was rather curious, watching from the window in the parlor as the jeeps and trucks rolled in on their first day of the stay, occupying barns and officers being taken into homes and apartments above small shops - it seemed the Americans had just about equalized the population of the town.

Winnie bent down to pick up the stem of one of the daisies growing in a field down the road aways from the main hub of Aldbourne, where the end of the town was nearly just out of sight, the top of the brick chimney just around the corner from where she stood barely visible.

Her mother had thought it'd be best if her hair were braided and pulled from her face, while also framing her cheekbones and the freckles her mother loved sometimes more than life itself. The ends of her hair had been tucked up into one another and neatly pressed and pulled together by the bobby pins from her mother's dresser. Then she had stood in the mirror, watching as her mother set her hands on her shoulders and given both a reassuring and gentle squeeze, before bustling her out of the door, with a lunch pale of white bread, a pad of butter, an apple from the small orchard her father had planted when she had been a little girl, and a cloth napkin her mother had sewn. All tucked in and packaged neatly.

Winnie admittedly was a bit more outgoing, a bit more of the sprightly type and willing type. She guessed that's why she let herself linger to the side a bit and watched as the Land Girls talked and giggled with the Americans for a few weeks, twirling the ends of their hair that they pulled from tight buns of braids, tilting their heads to the side to make themselves more appealing to the specimen that was man. Winnie was quite intrigued by the notion and had ultimately questioned her mother in the evening why a woman must do that to then be appealing to mankind. Her mother would pat her lips with the clean napkin she kept on her lap and lean towards her daughter with bright and wise eyes, and then start a discussion on womanhood and Winnie would almost immediately lose interest.

She had been a child when the war had started nearly, only fifteen, still wearing clothes she'd worn in primary. Still with books littering her room and a few dolls her mother had sewn for her collected in the corners of her room. Still a few fresh pieces of canvas either with watercolor or clean white leaned against walls or windowsills, plants potted, breathing and alive.

Much of that she still had, but by eighteen, she was an adult now. She assumed you had to start doing adult-like things by that point and one of them was keeping a watch for a man you could possibly take a chance of starting a family with - or whatever the Land Girls always gossiped about.

Winnie supposed that's why she found herself in that lone field that morning, wasting the few hours she had before her report time for the WLA, picking up flowers, holding them up to the sun, before doing much of the same; observing and watching the silent little thing and moving on. They always seemed to then grow back, because whenever she returned, the field, though not in late fall and the majority of the winter season, had a field of flowers.

The sound of the church bells by midday caught her quite literally off guard, her eyes snapping to her tiny brown watch on her wrist and her eyes again to the town down the pebble road at which she had walked aimlessly before, as if she didn't have anywhere to be. There, the hands on her watch read twelve o'clock and the guilt that seeped into her chest turned over like one of her mother’s hotcakes in the morning. Her bottom was covered in fresh grass stains already - she hadn't even reached her official first day as a Land Girl and her bum was already askew with the marks of a Land Girl.

Winnie turned and pulled the lunch pail from the ground, figuring she'd get her sips of water at the well she'd seen at the entrance to the estate, and raced down the road, her heart pounding with each and every step she took. In a way, she knew she should've just gone straight from her home to the estate, but she couldn't help but get distracted by the thought of a warm breeze for once that wafted through the town and slowly brushed through the changing leaves of color above her, along with the dew filled grass and last of the summer flowers. Yet, she knew she had a place now, officially. She was an adult in this world now and in this war, she played a part. Even in the grassy fields of Aldbourne, bright-eyed and youthful. She'd do what she could.

Turning the corner onto the main street, Winnie pushed her little legs the best she could - she'd taken a physical exam just a week prior and passed and suddenly was second-guessing it all as a stitch sewed its way into her side - and quite honestly, kept her eye out mainly for the sign of the estate and nothing else. The curses that left her mouth would've earned her a smack upside the head as a child, but in this case, her mother had said them enough as she bustled around the kitchen making bread or sewing and pricking her finger. The words always seemed to come to good use in any scenario, why not use them?

The Village Green Estate, sat just past the grassy square nearly in the center of town, fenced in property, with fresh cut lawn and rolling fields just out behind it which spread into landscape and traditional English foothills. She'd never been; always simply outside, looking in.

Letting out a disgruntled sigh towards herself, she raced around the corner, proud of herself for the fancy bit of footwork that she seemed to perform as she narrowly moved around that corner down the main road. Maybe it would’ve been fancier if she didn’t crash into that man whose solid force of chest and olive dressed clothing hadn’t sent her stumbling backwards and onto the ground. Her first thought was not that she was even more late, but she was sat on the ground in her breeches that already had the showings of sitting in dirt and the grass. Mother ought to truly smack her for this; freshly washed, hung to the wind and pressed! How could she do this to the clothing that the two of them had scrapped money together to clean?

“ Miss, I’m so sorry, let me help ya with that.” the man said and Winnie looked up towards him, her cheeks finding a way to flame a dangerously dark red color, as the man bent down to pick up her lunch pail and the canteen of water that had clattered onto the ground with a quite resounding tumble.

“ I’m so sorry,” Winnie managed out rushing to push herself to her feet, as the man slowly glanced up towards her, standing with her lunch pail and water in hand,” I…um, I’m quite late in the first place, which of course, it is my fault at the end of the day, and I was trying to get to the Village Estate and my mind must’ve thought racing around this corner without even looking was just a brilliant idea. And then you were right there, but I only just registered once my bottom had hit the ground. But, it was the fields! The fields of flowers! Just past the old barn down the road - they were just too pretty to ignore!”

Winnie tried to catch her breath after managing a ramble such as that and was sure that if it were anything different, she would’ve taken a breath between sentences and words. The man, whom she realized was one of the Americans from the paratrooper company, watched her with a soft smile; he didn’t seem quick to judge, he seemed composed - unlike herself, good God - and he was tall. She didn’t question why her mind decided that tall was what out of the thousands of words in the dictionary she could begin to call him, but tall it was.

“ Don’t worry about it really,” the man said, with an easy shrug of his shoulders,” we all got places to be, some earlier than others. Don’t let it bother ya.” Winnie watched him and managed a small grin. He had quite a nice voice at that, it wasn’t anything demeaning or rough like some of the Americans, their god-awful accents ringing through Aldbourne streets at every hour of the day. No, his voice was actually quite gentle - oh God, she must’ve looked like a lost puppy in his eyes at least - and he showed no signs of annoyance either.

“ Here,” he said and handed her the lunch pail, which she carefully took and the canteen which she actually looped across her shoulder this time, just how her mother had done it before she had removed it in the field,” there ya are.”

“ Thank you…again, really, I’m sorry to have ran right into you.” Winnie said again, looking up at him and finding his eyes already watching her there again, making her let out an unexpected and quite nervous laugh that made this smile spread across her lips again,” I thought it was a brick wall at first I’ll be honest and I was just an idiot.”

The man let out a laugh - it was a really nice laugh, one that you used around your family, one that was genuine and for a second she felt a smile spread across her lips. Oh God, she felt so awkward, scratching behind her neck as she felt the warmth continuing to creep up past her neck and into her cheeks again. Maybe she should be embarrassed; after all, she ran into him like some sort of madwoman herself, on what sort of mission - God knows what that was.

“ Glad I could be seen that way by someone like you, Miss, none of the boys back in the barracks would believe it for a second, so I thank you for that.” he said with a smile her way and she let out a laugh at his words. She could feel a bit of a thrill racing through her system - maybe it was confidence or this weird urge to be friendly to the ally - whatever it was, it was the first time in 18 years she had met an American and an American who had such pleasant manners. A lingering silence fell between them as they watched one another - Winnie quite honestly felt like she were supposed to say something in the awkward air of silence, but found herself too focused on this American man with manners who had helped her by the mess she had caused.

“ Where are my manners, Pat Christenson. I’m with Easy Company from the 506th.” he said, holding out a hand towards her, a little laugh leaving his lips afterwards,” Only right of me after I crash into ya and you fly to the ground.” Winnie let out a small chortle at his words and shook his hand right back, surprised by the warmth his hand withheld along with the gentleness that followed.

“ Winnie Chapman. I’m not a paratrooper or even as near as an expert, but I must say, you are one of the most gentlemen-like gentlemen I have ever met.” she said, as the duo retracted their hands,” I’m with….well, a little house down the road is where I reside if you’re interested in homemade apple pie.”

Oh God someone stop her and reteach her the alphabet or something - apple pie?! Winnie could feel his eyes on her and her cheek’s deepening to an even darker red - outing her mother’s apple pie to an American paratrooper who she had just happened to collide with this morning? Her mother ought to lose her poor mind for outing something as precious as that; and that recipe was ancient! Gods, Winnie just wasn’t used to Americans and their bluntness and upfront nature. If anything, the citizens of little Aldbourne were much more apt to stay on the quiet side, just like what they had done with the war until it had come to their front doors.

“ Guilty is charged, Winnie Chapman.” Pat said with a grin, and Winnie let out another chuckle again - they were already on full name basis where smiles and grins followed - and she slowly met his gaze again,” What’s this about homemade apple pie?”

“ Oh it’s my mother’s! Most beautiful apple pie in town - she’d sell it if she could - but with rationing and all, we’ve only managed some ingredients,” she had to slow herself with the rambling, it seemed this American paratrooper Pat Christenson was all for inciting her bountiful rambles of nothings,” in the future she’ll be able to do it, I’ve told her so.” Pat watched her with a grin.

“ She sounds like a wonderful woman, and if I’m being honest, Winnie Chapman, I’d be inclined to try a slice myself one day if the chance ever came.” he said, leaning up against the brick wall beside them with another grin. Winnie made a fair attempt, as best as she could imagine, on hiding the surprise that seemed to fill her eyes there as she stood in front of him - did he really enjoy apple pie that much, to practically offer himself to a night at the Chapman’s for apple pie of all things? Her mother ought to scold her for such a thing, visitors were practically a no-show at this point - how was he supposed to react to the leaky sink, the floorboard coming up in the corners of the parlor and the window with the small crack in the corner. She absentmindedly fumbled with the leather strap of her canteen and suddenly remembered there was the tall American stood in front of her, watching her….with very soft eyes.

“ I mean, if you ever wanted to stop by, we haven’t had someone over since before the war and Mrs. Atkins down the street has been far too fickle these days with afternoon tea in the parlor.” Winnie said, biting back her lip at her words - he wouldn’t even know Mrs. Atkins, why would she ever bother,” My mother would be sure to love the company; complete with the stories you ought to have. She absolutely loves the thrill of the American lifestyle that she hears about in the paper.”

The internal halt she had to put on herself at the immediate contradiction to her previous thoughts was an attempt to slap herself silly - he ought to have thought she were mad! Her mother would surely think the same. An American paratrooper for apple pie; was she insane. Quite possibly. Pat let out a chuckle at her words and slowly met her gaze again - his eyes were a beautiful caramel color and they shone with a brightness reminiscent of the sun - he seemed to recognize her staring, but he watched her right back. Okay, maybe to him, it were like some silly little joke, maybe he liked jokes, who knew!

“ I would love to join you and your mother for a meal in the future, Winnie Chapman.” he said with a grin,” Homemade apple pie can make anyone away from home feel at home.” Winnie smiled and tried to ignore the twinge deep inside her stomach, but the sudden realization of how handsome this tall American was - regarding the fact this tall American was talking to her of all people - and how much he seemed to be enjoying the conversation, Winnie decided to put it to rest.

“ We’d be more than happy.” she said, taking an exciting step closer - subconsciously of course, if she were actually in control of what her mind was thinking right now, she would’ve cowered and watched from afar, but letting herself remain actively engaged in conversation with this American was thrilling and enticing. Even bathed in sunlight, his eyes twinkled, and the genuineness of his smile dissipated the dreariness of war and the circumstances that encircled them.

“ Where’d you say you had to go again? The Village Estate?” he asked her - the sudden dread that filled her stomach was NOT as enticing as it once had been and the realization that she’d been out talking to this tall American while her arrival was more than likely awaited and equally anticipated, not to mention she was already incredibly lateby every means imaginable and now this would only made her even more late. She looked to him with wide eyes and he found a way to chuckle.

“ Yes.” she breathed out, her eyes widening further,” Yes…I….I should’ve been there ages ago but-”

“ You were in the fields. With the flowers. With the flowers that were too pretty to ignore.” Pat said, a smile spreading on his face as Winnie registered that he spoke the same words she had basically let cascade upon him all at once. Winnie looked taken aback at first, smirking the slightest bit at his words.

“ Yes, actually, because of the flowers.” she said, letting out a small laugh,” I didn’t think you’d….remember that?”

“ I drew some flowers from that field a few days back.” Pat said with a small smile, tilting his head to the side,” By far some of the prettiest flowers I’d ever seen.” Winnie grinned, then it fell.

“ Right, Village Estate, WLA. Bollocks, uh, shit, uh sorry, - I’ve really got to get a move on or they’ll have my bottom.” Winnie said and glanced towards the center square where people milled about on their daily routine. Winnie looked back to Pat who watched her with an amused grin himself.

“ If you ever need to find me, I will in fact be the one Land Army girl covered in mud - I heard it was cow day.” she said, watching Pat’s brow raise,” don’t ask.” It came out exasperated but he laughed. She really loved his laugh. With that, a slight stumble, and a glance back, she took off down the road.

“ I can keep that promise at least!” she called over her shoulder, catching Pat’s smile just as she rounded the corner. Right as she slowed herself down at the main gates of the Village Estate, did she then realize she’d told by far one of the most handsome Americans she’d ever seen that she would be the one covered in mud - most likely daily at that. And she’d invited him over for pie - apple pie! And her mother’s no less. Winnie scrunched her nose and sighed.

“ Are you Winnie Chapman?” a voice asked and Winnie practically launched herself upright, finding a young woman like herself, concern on her face, as she stepped forward in similar wear to Winnie’s own.

“ Yes, yes, I am…Winnie.” she managed out, slightly breathlessly.

“ We’ve been awaiting you! So glad to see you’ve made it!” she said, a smile breaking onto her face. Winnie felt a relieved smile - with a slight hint of confusion possibly - spread on her face.

“ We were worried you got lost.” the young woman exclaimed and Winnie brushed it off cooly with a slight smile.

“ Not lost, just….Americans and brick walls I’m afraid.” The young woman laughed.

“ There’s more to that than meets the eye I’m afraid.”

“ I’ll take my chances.” Winnie said with a chuckle and the young woman grinned.

“ Follow me.” the young woman said,” We are delighted to have you join us.” Winnie grinned. She’d made it to the Estate - with a few detours - but she’d made it. And those little bumps in the road; they’d been worthwhile.

Algy perched on the banks of the frozen burn in the bright winter sunshine, and gazed at the strange, spiky shapes of the ice crystals, and the big dark hole in the middle of the stream which the ice seemed unable to reach. As he wondered idly why the hole was round, and not rectangular and jagged like the crystals, he remembered the wonderings of another popular character :)

Peach Boy Riverside TV Anime Gets Cheeky in New Key Visual

  A life slaughtering demons in a world overrun by monsters is just peachy keen in a new key visual (below) for Peach Boy Riverside, an upcoming TV anime based on the manga written by coolkyousinnjya (Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid) and illustrated by Johanne that puts a fantasy roadtrip twist on the classic Japanese folktale of Momotaro.

  Additionally, four new cast members have been revealed for the series, including:

    M・A・O as Frau, a rabbit-person of unknown gender who dresses in a sailor uniform. Frau is full of mysteries, including not only their true physical appearance but also their well-known relationship with the Winny the Witch. Frau was on the verge of collapsing when they met Sally, and so they became Sally's traveling companion.

  Toshiki Masuda as Hawthorne, a swordsman with a strong sense of justice and also the captain of the Knights of Rimdal. Hawthorne initially believes that demihumans are monsters, but after meeting Sally and Frau, he begins to change his mind and be more open to interacting with other species.

    Megumi Toda as Carrot, a formerly high-ranking "Eyeball Demon" who lost her power when she was defeated in battle by Mikoto. She is given the name "Carrot" by Frau.

    And Jirō Saitō as Inu ("Dog"), a talking dog who accompanies Mikoto in his travels. Inu frets constantly about Mikoto's unstable personality, and he often scolds and rebukes the young hero as a result. Inu is in fact the original dog from the famous "Momotaro" fairytale.

    The original Peach Boy Riverside manga is serialized in Kodansha's Shonen Magazine R magazine and on the Magazine Pocket app. An English language version is also available from Kodansha Comics, who describe the story of the series as follows:

  Saltherine Aldarake, princess of the Kingdom of Aldarake, dreams of traveling the world—a dangerous dream in a land where monsters roam the countryside as they please, and humans live behind high, strong walls. But when a chance meeting with traveler Mikoto gives hope to her dream, he shatters it soon after, as he reveals himself to be none other than Momotaro, ruthless demon-slayer. Though horrified by the gore Momotaro leaves behind, Saltherine is convinced more than ever that she needs to learn about the world beyond her walls, and journeys out...following the steps of the mysterious, charismatic, terrifying boy she met that day...

    The Peach Boy Riverside TV anime is directed by Shigeru Ueda and features animation production by Asahi Production. The series is scheduled to begin broadcasting in Japan in July of 2021.

I did my undergrad’s in chemistry and currently working on a graduate degree in analytical chemistry
