Nestled in the heart of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, With Others is an intimate natural wine bar, designed by owner Shanna Nasiri in collaboration with the San Francisco-based art and design collective, Studio Ahead. This neighborhood gem draws inspiration from the serene elegance of Japandi design, blending the minimalist aesthetics of Japanese and Scandinavian influences.

Literary journal editors: We want writing that's bold and fearless, that's aching and intimate and authentic, that spins language into a string and plucks it until we vibrate in sympathy like wet crystal wine glasses, that makes us see mescaline phosphenes when we close our eyes and vomit up cheesecloth ectoplasm in rapture, and--
Every prose piece in their journals: Completely indistinguishable from any other arbitrarily selected piece in structure, mood, voice, diction, rhythm, and overall style. Can only be read aloud in an indoor voice, to a round of polite golf clapping punctuated by one or two airy coughs. Could have been written by an AI trained on the MFA portfolios of everyone who ever contributed to the gentrification of Williamsburg.

TALEA opens new West Village taproom
Tumblr media
The growing empire of TALEA Beer Co. has expanded back across the East River, with a new location on Christopher Street between Bleecker and Bedford in the West Village. It’s their first permanent location in Manhattan after operating a pop-up location near Grand Central in the summer of 2022.
The West Village taproom, their third, offers all the comforts of their brewery location in Williamsburg and taproom in Cobble Hill: a pastel aesthetic and marble slab bar, set flights and pours of their beers along with wines, cider and cocktails, light snacks and cheese and charcuterie boards, and a friendly, welcoming staff. On first glance, the space itself feels a lot smaller than their other locations, but it winds into a cozy back room with lounge-like seating, and there are a few seats on the sidewalk as well.
This is the first of two upcoming locations in Manhattan for TALEA. A second outpost, on West 40th Street across from Bryant Park and the New York Public Library, is currently under construction.

Haunted States of America: Virginia
Tumblr media
Hampton's Haunted Houses & How to Feed A Ghost (1998) by Jane Keane Polonsky and Joan McFarland Drum
Hampton is a historic town on the eastern coast of Virginia and is one of the oldest European settlements in the United States. This short volume is part history, part ghost stories, and part recipes. Mixed in with tales of ghostly dentists, haunted hotels, and a visit by Blackbeard the pirate are recipes for dishes such as:
Heavenly Hash Candy for Ghost Hunting
Spoonbread
Chicken Salad and Sweet Potato Custard Pie (a favorite of a ghostly visitor at a building on Wine Street)
Spirit Punch, which comes with the notes: "Hearty consumption of the following spirit punch is certain to assist in raising the netherworld" and "Don't bother using quality liquor because it does not matter in this punch."
What do you like to eat and drink when you go hunting for ghosts?
Virginia is the second-most represented state in our collection, with 32 books about ghosts and hauntings. Take a look at these other books:
The Mystery of Ghostly Vera And Other Haunting Tales of Southwest Virginia (1993) by Charles Edwin Price; introduction by Sharyn McCrumb; cover art by David Dixon
Virginia's Ghosts: Haunted Historic House Tours (1995) by L.B. Taylor, Jr.
The Hauntings of Williamsburg, Yorktown, and Jamestown (1998) by Jackie Eileen Behrend
The Browne Popular Culture Library (BPCL), founded in 1969, is the most comprehensive archive of its kind in the United States.  Our focus and mission is to acquire and preserve research materials on American Popular Culture (post 1876) for curricular and research use. Visit our website at https://www.bgsu.edu/library/pcl.html.

BLOOD FOR DRACULA
Immediately after completing Flesh For Frankenstein, filmmaker Paul Morrissey and star Udo Kier created Blood For Dracula, a sumptuously depraved Euroshocker that tows the line between art and bad taste. Desperate for virgin blood, Count Dracula (Kier) journeys to an Italian villa only to discover the family’s three young daughters are also coveted by the estate’s Marxist stud (Joe Dallesandro of Morrissey’s Flesh, Trash and Heat). Stefania Casini (Suspiria) and Bicycle Thieves director Vittorio De Sica co-star in one of the most unique and outrageous vampire films in history, now scanned uncut in 4K from the original negative for the first time ever.

SAW The Musical The Unauthorized Parody of Saw (New York Off-Broadway)
One of the most thought-provoking horror films of all time now is…a musical. SAW The Musical hilariously captures the events of the first movie parodying the Saw that started it all following from where Lawrence Gordon and Adam Stanheight find each other for the first time in the bathroom trap. Will they follow "the rules" as they discover each other's secrets? Will they escape the game in time and saw right through? A love story with fluidity (and lots more fluids), 'SAW The Musical The Unauthorized Parody of Saw' is Little Shop of Horrors meets Avenue Q, pushing the boundary on sexuality and how to love. In 2008, officials erected a historical marker in West Point, a small hamlet in Virginia’s King William County. Set at an intersection about 20 miles north of Williamsburg, the plaque is titled “Indians Poisoned at Peace Meeting.” It commemorates a little-known act of colonial duplicity: a mass poisoning carried out by the English in 1623 as part of an attempted assassination of the Pamunkey leader Opechancanough.
