Molti palazzi signorili di Firenze hanno queste minuscole porticine che si aprono ad un metro dal suolo sembrano le porte degli gnomi o delle fate. Oggi sono quasi tutte chiuse o inghiottite dalle tante ristrutturazioni degli antichi palazzi e spuntano molte volte dagli interni dei negozi fiorentini.

Ma a cosa servivano queste porticine a mezza altezza? Ebbene, queste aperture rivelavano una mirabile tradizione fiorentina . Queste erano cosiddette "Buchette del vino"

Dette anche " tabernacoli o finestrelle sempre del vino" erano poste sin dal Cinquecento ai lati dei portoni dei palazzi delle grandi famiglie per vendere un bicchiere ‐ o un fiaschetto ‐ di nettare, in cambio di un gruzzolo di monete sonanti. E si beveva fin dalla mattina.

Il vino veniva dalle tenute che questi signori avevano sulle colline circostanti e lo si smerciava in questo modo ai viandanti

Ogni " Buchetta " aveva uno stile architettonico differente, in base alla Casata dei fiorentini.

Dietro il passaggio c'erano anche botti dentro una cantina e un servo pronto a mescere. Accanto alla" Buchetta" dei battenti per richiamare il servo qualora si fosse distratto o chissà "ci poteva stare" ubriacato.

on a serious note, do you know the particular reason why French (and I think some other European languages) structure their numbers Like That? I'm never one to make fun of languages, just the "shifting to base 20" seems unintuitive

also I'm planning to major in linguistics in college. this isn't relevant but you seem to like when people tell you that

the vigesimal (base 20) numeral system is among the common configurations around the world - not sure why french specifically went that direction, when other romance languages like spanish, italian, portuguese, and romanian use a decimal (base 10) system.

does anybody here have more info?

How much research have you put into TBBW???

I once spent like 5 legit hours just researching the first timestamp you see in The Little Wolf. So. I’d say a lot.

I’m no history buff, and I wouldn’t say everything is historically accurate, but for any time period stuff I usually research the basics to get a good idea of what’s at least not historically accurate. And then decide from there how realistic I'm going to be. For example, a lot of TBBW's locations are real places. However, they're not always where I say they are. I often researched castles or manors, found one I liked, and then plopped it down in the area I wanted to be set in (which was also researched) and combined the two together in a blend of realism and fantasy. The diner Klaus and Caroline grab their burgers from is a prime example---Wayback Burgers is an actual diner in the town that TVD was filmed, but it's actually inside the town, not on the outskirts along a highway. And it looks a lot different to how I described and imagined it.

And then you've got all the flashbacks, which dip enough into historical context they feel real. So you get to see these scenes where Ivan the Terrible is playing cards with Klaus, before his wife was poisoned and he spiralled into a deacdes-long rule of paranoia and ruthlessness. Or you see Kol drinking his worries away while his siblings plot to flee the violence of the Spanish War of Succession, lending more reason to why they travelled to the Americas, rather than just because of Mikaek's pursuit. I'm not into history enough to stress over EVERY minute detail, but I also don't want it so grossly out of whack that it breaks your immersion.

Does amara/aegon have any like hobbies we haven't heard abt? Or do either them have any interest in a hobby that they just don't have time/patience for?

In Black Hole Aegon likes drag racing and also horse-riding (rich boy hobbies). He ends up just staying in and playing video games though.

I like to imagine Amara loves making fine illustrations like Colleen Doran or Alphonse Mucha because I used to do those and it really helped to empty my head and deal with my anxiety. I think she'd benefit from art therapy tbh.

As for in the medieval fic, I think Amara has her father's love of glass blowing and decorating the finished pieces. Just anything that deals with the scattering of light. Aegon's hobbies are...drinking...and riding Sunfyre? And also sex. It's a hobby, trust me. He finds new ways to excel at all three things.

While not agoraphobic, it's very rare you'll find Copperhead out in the open. He's the sort that prefers enclosed spaces or walls to climb, anywhere that the environment might offer him either an advantage or refuge.
