With access to COVID-19 rapid tests becoming increasingly difficult in Windsor, a former director of Ontario's COVID-19 Science Advisory Table is advising people to do all they can to avoid contracting or spreading the virus.
Dr. Fahad Razak, who grew up in Windsor, said people should treat testing and getting COVID-19 vaccines as part of their regular routine.
"Responding to illness like this is about being pragmatic … so if you can avoid getting other people sick, if you can test and avoid getting high risk individuals exposed, if you can keep your kids home, if you can do things to prevent spread, that's a good thing," Razak said on Windsor Morning.
"I think as a physician, what's been reinforced to me over my career, and it's not just for COVID, it's that preventing infections where possible is a good thing because they inherently are unpredictable."
A spokesperson for Health Canada previously told CBC that it is no longer procuring rapid tests en masse. The agency also says there are no plans to replenish the federal inventory after it is depleted, but that provinces are able to request test kits until they expire or the stockpile runs out.
The Windsor-Essex Health Unit says free rapid antigen test kits will not be restocked in the future.
CBC News called a handful of pharmacies in Windsor and found none of them had test kits for sale or knew where we could find them.
Razak said he's "surprised" to learn that rapid antigen tests are seemingly impossible to find in Windsor-Essex.
"One of the tenants of public health is trying to make it easy for people to do what they need to to protect themselves, and certainly for higher risk groups especially, this is a test that has value," he said.
According to Razak, while COVID-19 is not having the impact that it did back in 2020 to 2022, "this is still an illness that is spreading unpredictably … and so you could get sick in the middle of summer. So, I think the idea of trying to help people protect themselves can still be part of the story, while we acknowledge that things are significantly better than they once were."
How to get a COVID-19 test The provincial government says if you have COVID‑19 symptoms and are at a higher risk of severe illness, you should get tested for COVID‑19 and seek care as soon as possible, as you may benefit from available COVID‑19 treatments.
According to the province, you are eligible for publicly funded COVID-19 testing if you have COVID‑19 symptoms and belong to certain groups, including seniors and those who are immunocompromised.
If you develop symptoms and you are eligible for a publicly-funded test, provincial health authorities recommend you contact your primary care provider or pharmacist to find out about test availability and to arrange to take a test. If you are unsure if you are eligible for a PCR test, speak with your health care provider.
The latest data from the province shows the positivity rate of COVID-19 at 14.9 per cent. There were 89 outbreaks reported in the most recent week, hospital bed occupancy stood at 781, and there were six deaths linked to the virus.
This coming December will mark five years since the first case of the virus was detected.
Meanwhile, Razak said the unavailability of rapid antigen tests and "largely" losing the ability to monitor spread through wastewater means people need to be extra vigilant.
Ontario officially ended its COVID-19 wastewater surveillance program on July 31, but the executive director of the Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research (GLIER) said this did not impact Windsor-Essex.
Mike McKay said the institute applied for a federal grant announced early May — part of the Canada biomedical research fund for pandemic preparedness — and received a $15 million grant over four years.
"In that proposal, we had actually included this strategic area, Windsor-Essex, as one of the places that we'd like to continue wastewater surveillance," McKay told CBC back in June.

Labelling and Packaging of Medicinal Products for Human use
1. Overview
This guidance aims to outline the labelling and packaging requirements for medicinal products intended for human use, following the agreement of the Windsor Framework. It should be used alongside the existing guidance for wholesale dealers and manufacturers.
The Windsor Framework establishes long-term arrangements for the distribution of medicines in Northern Ireland. It ensures that medicines can be approved and licensed throughout the UK by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), and it exempts certain medicines in Northern Ireland from the European Union (EU) Falsified Medicines Directive (FMD) requirements.
To prevent the distribution of these medicines to any part of the EU while maintaining consistent packaging and labelling across the UK, all medicines marketed in the UK must feature a “UK Only” label.
These new regulations will take effect on January 1, 2025. As of this date:
1. All packaging for products aimed at the UK market must display a clearly visible “UK Only” label.
2. All new medicines and those currently in Northern Ireland that are subject to the EU Central Authorization Procedure will be approved by the MHRA for the UK market. Additional guidance on the transition of licenses will be provided.
3. These products will only be available in the UK and not in Ireland or other EU countries, except as ‘specials’ under EU rules.
All packaging for products aimed at the UK market must display a clearly visible “UK Only” label.
2. Glossary of Terms
PL A product licensed by the MHRA that is valid for the entire UK, effective from January 1, 2025. UK-wide Marketing Authorisation (MA) A product licensed by the MHRA across the entire UK prior to January 1, 2025. PLNI A product licensed by the MHRA that is specific to Northern Ireland. PLGB A product licensed by the MHRA that is specific to Great Britain.
3. Timelines

4. ‘UK Only’ Label Requirements
Starting January 1, 2025, all medicinal products intended for the UK market must have a prominently displayed “UK Only” label on their packaging. This includes Prescription Only Medicines and Pharmacy and General Sales List items.
Guidelines for the “UK Only” label include:
1. The label may be positioned anywhere on the outer packaging.
2. The text must be at least 7-point font and easily readable, following Article 5 of EU Regulation 2023/1182 and current MHRA guidelines.
3. No additional font or style requirements are specified beyond these criteria.
4. To provide a single deadline for new packaging requirements, manufacturers will be allowed to distribute medicines in existing EU-compliant packaging until December 31, 2024, extending the previous deadline.
5. Stickering
The “UK Only” label may be temporarily applied with a sticker for a period of six months, expiring on June 30, 2025. After this date, the label must be printed directly onto the packaging. The guidance on stickering includes:
If a sticker is used, an updated mock-up indicating the sticker placement must be submitted to the MHRA.
1. Stickers must be applied before certification by a Qualified Person (QP).
2. Stickers must not cover any mandatory information such as batch numbers or expiration dates.

14 additional primary care clinics to open in N.S. pharmacies
Nova Scotia is expanding a program that enables pharmacists to treat and prescribe medication to patients with common illnesses or certain chronic diseases, like diabetes.
The provincial government announced Wednesday that its Pharmacy Primary Care Clinic program will expand from 12 to 26 locations as of next month.
The province says nine new locations will open Monday and the other five will open by the end of May.
"Pharmacists live and work in our communities and are one of the most accessible healthcare providers in Nova Scotia," said Brian Comer, minister responsible for the Office of Addictions and Mental Health, on behalf of Nova Scotia Health Minister Michelle Thompson, in a news release Wednesday.
"As our province and population quickly grow, we're expanding how and where Nova Scotians can receive primary care close to home."
The program is part of the province's efforts to ensure residents have access to primary care even if they don't have a doctor.
The first 12 primary care clinics opened in February.
The province says the clinics have provided more than 9,000 services to more than 5,000 Nova Scotians since then.
"For me, the proof of this model is in the daily interactions I have with patients who otherwise would be in emergency rooms, or worse, not attending to their health needs at all,” said Colleen MacInnis, a pharmacist at the TLC Pharmasave in Shelburne, N.S. “I am full of pride and inspiration watching our team and our colleagues at other sites providing this necessary care in our communities.”
The province says it is spending $1.2 million to expand to the 14 new locations.
The following nine locations are opening Monday:
Amherst Pharmasave, 158 Robert Angus Dr., Amherst, N.S.
Balser’s Pharmachoice, 83 Warwick Rd., Digby, N.S.
Chester Pharmasave, 3785 Hwy 3, Chester, N.S.
Guardian Elmsdale Pharmacy, 269 Hwy 214, Elmsdale, N.S.
Pictou Pharmasave, 33 Water St., Pictou, N.S.
Shoppers Drug Mart, 255 Commercial St., Glace Bay, N.S.
The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy, 133 Baker Dr., Dartmouth, N.S.
The Medicine Shoppe, 708B Reeves St., Port Hawkesbury, N.S.
Windsor Pharmasave, 30 Gerrish St., Windsor, N.S.
The following five clinics are opening by the end of May:
Lawrencetown Pharmachoice, 491 Main St., Lawrencetown, N.S.

Ontario has released a comprehensive healthcare plan to shorten wait times and localize access to care across the province. Minister Sylvia Jones announced details of the program at a press conference on Thursday morning in Toronto.
The government also released a 50-page document with three broad pillars as a framework for the province’s healthcare plan moving forward: The Right Care in the Right Place, Faster Access to Care, and Hiring More Health Care Workers.
This plan comes on the heels of the government's updated three-step approach to expanding for-profit surgical and diagnostic centers. Ontario doctors have said investing in private health care will only exacerbate staffing shortages and wait times for urgent care.
Ontario NDP health critic and MPP, France Gelinas, said Thursday that residents should not be “fooled” by the Ford plan, claiming it is poised to privatize the healthcare sector.
Gelinas adds that the province should instead end Bill 124 and implement a massive staff recruitment and retention plan where they get paid fairly.
Right Care in the Right Place focuses on localizing health care in Ontario. To do so, the government said they are expanding their team-based approach to health care, mental health supports, and medications prescribed at pharmacies.
It said it was working on adding four more Ontario Health Teams to the existing 54. This will help patients transition between healthcare providers and ensure patients' medical records follow them wherever they seek care. This will add up to 1,200 physicians to this model over the next two years, the government said. The plan outlines the addition of eight youth wellness hubs, on top of the 14 pre-existing ones, which help young people connect to mental health and substance use supports, primary care, and social services.
The government also reiterated its expansion of 13 medications that pharmacists can now prescribe, a change that began on Jan 1. In the future, the government will eliminate old-fashioned machines and replace them with digital alternatives.
The second pillar, “Faster Access to Care,” aims to tackle long wait times, the government said. According to the plan, the government will reduce the backlog and cut waiting times for surgeries and procedures.
This will first be addressed by tackling the existing backlog for cataract surgeries – which Ontario says has the longest waits – by issuing four new licenses to health centers in Windsor, Kitchener-Waterloo, and Ottawa, the government reported. The province said it was also investing millions more in existing centers. This will tackle wait times for MRI and CT scans, ophthalmic surgeries, minimally invasive gynecological surgeries, and plastic surgeries.
As a result of the government plan, paramedics now have more leeway in treating certain 911 patients. They can achieve this by allowing them to be treated in their community rather than in emergency rooms.
In the case of long-term care, Ontario claims that by adding nearly 60,000 new and upgraded beds, it will be able to reduce waitlists and ensure seniors receive the care they require in the most appropriate setting. This is in addition to the more than 3,500 hospital beds constructed by the province since 2018.
The final pillar, “Hiring More Health Care Workers,” will work to expand the province’s workforce through initiatives such as hiring, training, and education. The region has announced plans to expand its education program over the next five years by adding 10 undergraduate seats and 295 postgraduate positions at medical schools.
Starting this spring, the province said it would also expand its “Learn and Stay” grant, which will be available to approximately 2,500 eligible postsecondary students. The funding covers tuition and books for those who enroll in “high-priority programs” in underserved communities, like nursing, paramedic, and medical laboratory science, in exchange for working in those communities for up to two years after graduation.
The government reiterated their revised “As of Right” rules, which eliminated the registration requirement for out-of-province healthcare workers to lower the barrier of entry to practice in Ontario. The report also outlines the government’s efforts to make it “easier” and “faster” for international nurses to practice in the province. The plan nods to a new portable benefits program in the works. This program has been referenced as a way to attach health benefits to individual workers instead of employers. There were no additional details on what these benefits would entail or when they would roll them out.

"Would appreciate meeting with O. L. Snyder, deputy attorney-general. and W. H. Stringer, commissioner Ontario Provincial Police. Saturday after. noon at 2 o’clock my office." Questioned concerning the proposal that increased personnel and motorized equipment be provided for the police department, the mayor said that Windsor's financial position in view of imitations placed upon expenditures under the refunding plan had necessitated maintaining the police budget at a constant level this year.
It is recalled that board of control during consideration of the budget early in the year, refused the police department's request, for a number of new cars. At that time it was proposed by the police department to trade-in four old cars for new vehicles.
REQUEST REFUSED Impelled by the need for economy and the current car market, control board refused to accede to the police chief's request. At the same time, the controllers were not in agreement with the requests for additional men. Subsequently the police commission dirt add to the force with the approval of the control board.
Because of Windsor's financial situation, the mayor said he was hopeful Tuesday of explaining the situation which has restricted board of control. He said he would urge that the provincial police lend some assistance both in men and vehicles.

If you’re over 18, live in Ontario and are in or near a hot spot (Toronto, Peel Region, Durham Region, Hamilton, Ottawa, Windsor, York Region) you can get vaccinated (with mRNA vaccines) at pharmacies in the listed regions. No proof of residency is required, so if you’re desperate you can come in from outside the region. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/ontario-covid-vaccine-adults-pharmacies-1.6019320
I know we’re all feeling guilty about being so greedy over vaccines, but not getting your shot won’t do a lot of good to help the problem. So get your shot, then go yell at your MP about us taking more than our fair share.

A Community Engaged in Research. Giselle Kagheni Regen 4540 Uwindsor
Purpose: Hello tumblrs, the purpose of this blog is to inform and educate on the importance of research and how impactful it is for the community. Research is the main reason why we have pain killers like Advil and Tylenol that you can easily get at your local pharmacy. It is also because of research that now we can treat certain illness that could not be treated in the past. One major milestone in regenerative medicine that doctors and researcher have overcome is transplantation. Because of research, people can donate blood, organs and even stem cells, which allow patients to have another chance at life. As research continues to happen in the Windsor-Essex communities, more support is needed from the community itself. Research is expensive and requires a lot of special machines and equipment that allows researchers to conduct the research. It also goes through rigorous testing procedures that helps researchers collect information about how safe medicines or medical procedures are for the community. Thus, it is important that the community gets involved and provides support by, sharing the research on social media platforms, donating blood, organs or stem cells, or even providing financial support.
Regenerative medicine! What is it?
Is it a field in science that seeks to apply the understanding of regenerative biology to restore tissue structure and function in damaged, non-regenerating tissues?
An example of regeneration
Most of us, if not all of us, have played with worms during childhood. Well, these little guys have the capacity to regenerate after injury. Meaning, if you cut them, they don’t die, but their body makes new cells and the injured worm becomes a full worm again.
Gastrointestinal (digestive system) tumours and cancer stem cells
You might be convinced about why research is important, but not why you should get involved. Luckily, I will be talking to you about something that is very important for all of us. And that is, the digestive system. You might have learned about it in grade school or high school, but we all know that the digestive system is very important.
The digestive tract is lined with special tissue called the mucosa, or mucous membrane. The mucosa itself consists of epithelium, lamina propria and muscular mucosae. This is very important for the digestive tract and is what allows to body to absorb all the nutrients we need, from the food that we eat.
Sometimes the digestive tract gets bruised and needs to be repaired or the lining tissue needs to be replaced. The stem cells (which are cells that can make the tissue in the digestive tract) are the ones responsible for rejuvenating the lining so that digestion can happen smoothly. However, sometimes issues arise from stem cells. When stem cells are not being well regulated or controlled, it can lead to intestinal tumours. This has a higher chance of happening if you as an individual are more genetically prone to developing tumours in the digestive tract.
Nevertheless, there is hope in regenerative medicine and research. In the following segment, I will be talking about stomach cancer and how regenerative medicine treats the disease.
Stomach Cancer
Interesting fact: Did you know that your stomach lining is replaced every 4 days and your stomach cells that meet digesting foods are replaced every 5 minutes.
Stomach cancer is when cells grow in the stomach abnormally and out of control. The stomach is basically a sac made from smooth muscle and it holds the delicious food that we eat. Stomach cancer is very common and is one of the top causes of cancer deaths. Some of the symptoms for stomach cancer include but not limited to, heartburn, having difficulty swallowing, nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, etc. The stomach is very important for your digestive system and finding ways to prevent and treat stomach cancer using regeneration is crucial.
Immunotherapy is one way to treat stomach cancer. It is a treatment method that helps the immune system fight cancer cells. Cancer cells produce proteins that make it hard for the immune system to recognize cancer cells as dangerous, but the immunotherapy help prevent that.
Highlighting local researchers
Introducing DR Sindu Kanjeekal. M.D.
DR Sindu Kanjeekal is a practicing doctor and a researcher working at the Windsor Regional Hospital.
What is her research focus?
Her research aligns with her clinical practice including hematological, gastrointestinal, and genitourinary cancers. She is a member of the Myeloma Canada Research Program and couple of their projects include testing novel compounds on myeloma and establishing a national database to support Canadian research. In the GI cancer field, she works on immunotherapy drugs for colorectal cancer which would potentially change the way the disease is treated.
Where does she get inspiration?
Dr Sindu enjoys running without music and lets her mind wander. She finds it relaxing and this helps her find solutions for problems she struggles with during the day.
What motivates her to do research?
She is motivated by her desire to ease the burden that cancer places on her patients and her family.
Why it matters?
Now you might be wondering why any of this matter right? Well… what makes it possible that you are now able to go to a local pharmacy and buy painkillers like Advil and Tylenol for your headache? Or how were we able to create vaccines that help us fight against deadly diseases like polio, tetanus, and influenza? RESEARCH! Research is the main reason why scientists are able make these insane, yet possible breakthroughs. In fact, studies have shown that hospitals that are involved in regenerative research have better outcomes with their patients. Here in Windsor, we have our own institute called We-Spark that partnered with the Windsor Regional Hospital, St-Clair, the University of Windsor, and Hotel-Dieu Grace. We-Spark focuses on research that is focused on “improving outcomes for the people in our region”.
How can I get involved?
You might be thinking, “well, I am not a scientist”, or “I am not interested in science, so how can I get involved in research?”. Well, I have great news for you! You do not need to be a scientist, or even know much about science to support the local research of Windsor-Essex. One way you can help is donating blood, organs and even stem cells. You might already be aware of blood donations or probably know of someone who is a blood donor. Hospitals run short on blood donations and always need more blood for certain patients. Also, some illnesses like liver cancer that has progressed, require transplantation. They need a liver cells of a healthy individual , to rejuvenate the damaged liver of the patients. In addition, stem cells are very important for research and for treating illnesses. Stem cell therapy is a method that has been studied by many scientists, and it involves taking stem cells from a donor and giving them to a patient needing them. These stem cells then get adopted in the patient’s body, at the location of the illness and help in rejuvenating the damaged tissues.

One of the nation’s oldest soft drinks, Vernors Ginger Ale was first served to the public in 1866.
The drink was created by Detroit pharmacist James Vernor, a well-respected pharmacist with a reputation for meticulous care with his prescriptions.
Like most pharmacists of his time, Dr. Vernor also ran a soda fountain adjacent to his Woodward Avenue pharmacy. The doctor was working on a medicinal tonic of vanilla and spices, with the addition of ginger to calm the stomach, when he was called to fight in the Civil War. He left the blend in an oak cask and went off to fight in the Civil War in 1862. When Vernor returned from the war, he opened the barrel and was surprised by its delicious contents. The beverage had a zesty, sweet, gingery flavor that was accentuated by the wood’s aging process
.For several years, Vernor’s soda fountain was the only place where one could purchase the beverage. As demand grew, Dr. Vernor began to sell his product to other soda fountains. A master of quality control, the doctor reportedly maintained a firm stance with his vendors concerning even seemingly minute details. Pharmacies were required to install special equipment in order to properly serve the soda. The doctor was vigilant about each ingredient, reportedly treating the soda with the same consistency and attention that he paid to his prescriptions. As its fame grew, Vernor’s became available throughout the Midwest. A plant was soon opened in Detroit so that Vernor’s could be mass produced locally; the factory would continually expand with the company’s increasing success.
James Vernor was 84 when he passed away. His family joked that he did not retire until just hours before his death. His son, also named James Vernor, became the President of the company. Vernor’s and the City of Detroit grew together. A massive sign that illuminated the company logo was located along the Detroit River where ferries took passengers to Windsor, Bob-lo, and Belle Isle. In the 1940s, a shop opened along the river that allowed visitors to watch soda production as they enjoyed their drinks.
A highly carbonated beverage, Vernor’s is often used to cure stomachaches. Sometimes it is even mixed with lemon juice and served hot to nurse a sore throat or cough. A popular dessert beverage, the Boston Cooler, pairs vanilla ice cream with Vernor’s soda, a drink named after Detroit’s Boston Boulevard where it was reportedly first served. The Detroit chain Sanders Confectionary also served a Vernor’s-flavored ice cream at one time.
Sometime mid-century, the name lost its apostrophe and became simply Vernors. The Vernor family sold the company to an investment group in 1966; it was later owned by American Consumer Products, United Brands and then A&W Beverages. Today, Vernors is owned by Cadbury Schwepps, one of the nation’s largest beverage producers

Five finds a pillow pet in the apocolypse and goes fucking nuts. Similarly could also happen with a snuggie
you say pillow pet but what i hear is “Five having more than Dolores in the apocalypse au”
so it starts with Dolores. He picks her up, and she has a human face that isn’t decomposing, and it’s partially on a whim that he sticks her in his little red wagon and partially out of desperation. He needs company, he needs someone to talk with, or else he’s going to genuinely go insane.
He takes her with him because he remembers reading about programmers who talk to rubber ducks in order to find problems in the code, and he thinks “okay, this mannequin will be my rubber duck and she’ll help me with my equations to go home, simple as that”
it’s not as simple as that, and Dolores becomes someone real
but Dolores isn’t enough
he finds the teddy bear in the street, dropped a dusty and he very purposefully does not look around for where its owner might be. He already knows there are no survivors - he checked every body he came across in those first few weeks. But the bear is sitting there, and it looks so sad, and he has room in his wagon - and he just picks it up without really thinking about it and pops it next to Dolores.
Five names him Buddy, and learns that Buddy has a wicked sense of humor if a little dark.
Next he finds a little stuffed cat caught between bits of rubble. He’d thought it was a body at first (it wasn’t just humans killed in the apocalypse, after all) but no. The fabric is face, the eyes are plastic, and maybe once upon a time it was white but apocalypse living doesn’t exactly help with cleanliness. He calls her Snowy anyway, and places her in the wagon next to Dolores and Buddy. She’s very shy at first, and she doesn’t like Buddy’s jokes, but Dolores enjoys having another girl on the team.
And from there on it becomes a thing.
He doesn’t take all of them with him, and some are only temporary companions. Jasper is a dog that’s missing two legs. Scrappy is probably a panda but honestly is so filthy that Five is just guessing. Will is some sort of goofy looking monster. But every one he finds, he brushes off and introduces to the others and has a conversation - even if they’re just pretend conversations. Because it’s the end of the world and he’s the only one left and he’s hanging onto his sanity by his fingernails but having some form of companionship is… nice.
Even if it isn’t real.
So Five lives the apocalypse surrounded by dozens of toys who never speak but who have their own individual personalities that Five learns. He breathes life into them and makes them real, or as real as they can possibly be out in the apocalypse. It isn’t always stuffed animals. Sometimes it’s other mannequins. Sometimes he pauses to say hello to an intact statue, tracing the names people over the years have drawn and carved into them with gentle fingers.
He keeps Dolores by his side always, she was the first and he is most attached to her. The others are a somewhat rotating cast. Candles the lion lives in the ruins of the pharmacy with Jellybean the giraffe. Hoot the owl perches on top of what Five figures must have been an old church bell or something. Chip the hedgehog usually stands around the halfway point between the library ruins and the ruins of the umbrella academy. They’re familiar faces that when Five goes out scavenging, he calls out greetings to and pretends he receives them in return. An entire unliving city full of the creations of a desperate, lonely child.
They’re his neighbors. They’re his friends. They’re all the companionship he has out there as the only person left in the world.
And then the commission grabs him, and he leaves his friends behind, and he wasn’t quite expecting it to hurt as much as it did because he’s always been gearing up to leave them eventually. To travel back in time and save his siblings. But it still leaves him anxious and jumpy without any of his friends to confide in, though Dolores at least is with him even if she does constantly point out that his equations aren’t finished.
He goes back. He shows up on the day of the funeral. He goes to find the owner of a glass eye, he speaks to his brother, and then he shows up with Dolores. His siblings don’t question her. But they are slightly more confused when random stuffed animals start also popping up in the house.
“What’s this?” Allison asks, puzzled, picking up what could be a crocodile or a lizard or… something vaguely reptilian in looks.
Five doesn’t even look up, “That’s Snorri. Snorri, Allison. Allison, Snorri.”
“Okay.” Allison says slowly, and puts the stuffed toy back on the counter.
And when the stop the apocalypse, it keeps happening. Luther sits on the couch and is immediately shoved at by Five who has jumped over in a flash of blue. “You’re suffocating her!” He’s yelling, and Luther moves, and Five fishes out a stuffed whale which might or might not look like it came from the giftshop of the local aquarium. Five jumps away, cradling ‘her’ protectively in his arms before Luther can say a word.
“Should we ask about this?” Klaus asks at the breakfast table after Five takes his leave, looking at the place at the table where Five has placed a stuffed dog as if it was actually a person. “Like, I feel this is something we should be somewhat concerned about?” and nobody has anything to say to that, because Five had just carried out a one-sided conversation with a stuffed animal at the breakfast table like that was a normal and sane thing to do.
Finally Diego, who was volunteered by his family and upon refusal was goaded into it by Luther sighing and saying that he supposed, as team leader he should - , addresses the issue. Sort of.
“So uh,” Diego coughs from where he’s sitting awkwardly on the couch. Five is cross legged on the floor next to the coffee table, scribbling away at some equations while a plush wolf watches over with baleful eyes where its placed across from him on the tabletop. “What’s your uh, friend’s name?”
“Allie.” Five gestures with a wave of his hand, “She’s the best with polynomial functions.”
Diego nods, like that makes sense. “And uh, where did she come from?”
“I made Allie’s acquaintance on the corner of First and Gregory, I believe. She was trapped under a street lamp and about half a house when I found her.” Five says absently, still mostly focused on his equations. Honestly it’s easiest to get answers out of Five like this, when he’s only paying attention to what he’s saying with half his brain.
“Oh uh, in the apocalypse?” Diego asks dumbly, as if there were random collapsed houses in the streets.
But Five doesn’t call him out, too busy scribbling out some more numbers to bother verbally eviscerating his brother. He just nods.
“Are they all from the apocalypse?” Diego prods a little further, a picture starting to become clear in his mind and it’s not exactly one he’s liking.
“Mmhmm.” Five hums, “It’s not everyone, obviously. I’m not going to tear anyone away from their family of course. But anyone I met in shops and the like are fair game, and they’d much rather live with someone familiar to them until we figure out accommodations.”
“Accommodations?” Diego was so not ready for this discussion. He shouldn’t have let Luther manipulate him. He should have volunteered Vanya for it instead, no matter her excuses about actually having a job or whatever.
“Yeah,” Five nods, frowning at his paper for a moment before quickly erasing a number and continuing on, “Like Hoot used to live on the church bell but she can’t anymore ‘cause the church is still up. And people would try and make Chip move if he lived on Windsor street again.”
“Alright.” Diego says, and then decides to bite the bullet, “You do know they’re stuffed animals, right?”
The scratching of the pencil stops abruptly, and Diego finds himself staring into Five’s furious eyes. Five stands gracefully and Diego shifts warily, almost expecting Five to launch himself at his brother and attack. But no, instead Five scoops up the plush wolf into his arms and looks at Diego like he’s dirt, “You can apologize to Allie when you’re ready.” Five sniffs, before jumping away and taking the wolf with him.
Diego goes back to the rest of the family and is basically like ‘so like, he found them all in the apocalypse i think. He plans on rehoming them? I think? So I guess just… ignore it for now. And also if I’m smothered in my sleep know that it was murder.’
but yes five with lots of apocalypse friends of his own making, but dolores is still the most important because that’s his wife !!
and yes, some of those friends might be pillow pets :’)

Michigan & Ohio: Nine Pharmacists Charged in $12.1 Million Health Care Fraud Scheme
Nine pharmacists were charged in three separate indictments unsealed last week for their alleged participation in a $12.1 million health care fraud scheme executed in Detroit and southern Ohio.
Assistant Attorney General Brian A. Benczkowski of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, U.S. Attorney Matthew Schneider of the Eastern District of Michigan, Special Agent in Charge Lamont Pugh III of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG) Chicago Region and Special Agent in Charge Steven M. D’Antuono of the FBI’s Detroit Field Office made the announcement.
Auday Maki, 66, of Northville, Michigan, was charged with three counts of health care fraud. Hassan Abdallah, 49, of Sterling Heights, Michigan; Raef Hamaed, 50, of Scottsdale, Arizona; Tarek Fakhuri, 47, of Windsor, Canada; Kindy Ghussin, 45, of Greene County, Ohio; Balhar Singh, 57, of Butler County, Ohio; and Ali Abdelrazzaq, 44, of Sterling Heights, Michigan were each charged with one count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud and wire fraud. In addition, Abdallah and Abdelrazzaq were each charged with three counts of health care fraud and Fakhuri with two counts of health care fraud. Finally, Hassan Khreizat, 40, of Dearborn Heights, Michigan; and Nofal Cholag, 41, of Macomb, Michigan were each charged with one count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud and wire fraud and four counts of health care fraud.
The three indictments were filed in the Eastern District of Michigan. Maki, Hamaed, Ghussin, Singh, Abdelrazzaq, Cholag, and Khreizat appeared Tuesday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Anthony P. Patti in the Eastern District of Michigan. Abdallah appeared today in the Eastern District of Michigan before Judge Patti.
The nine defendants are licensed pharmacists and/or owners of pharmacies in Michigan and Ohio: Eastside Pharmacy Inc. (Eastside), Harper Drugs Inc. (Harper Drugs), Wayne Campus Pharmacy LLC (Wayne Campus), Universal Pharmacy LLC (Universal) and City Drugs Pharmacy Inc. (City Drugs), each located in the Detroit metro area, and Heartland Pharmacy LLC (Heartland) and Heartland Pharmacy 2 LLC (Heartland 2), which are located in Ohio.
The indictments allege that, using the pharmacies, the defendants billed Medicare, Medicaid, and Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) for prescription medications that were neither purchased nor dispensed. The indictments further allege that the defendants billed Medicare and Medicaid for medications that were often medically unnecessary and for some medications that were purportedly dispensed to deceased beneficiaries after their dates of death.
The indictments allege that the defendants received over $12.1 million due to fraudulent claims they submitted to Medicare, Medicaid, and BCBS. In particular, the indictments allege that, from 2010 to 2019, Medicare and Medicaid paid Abdallah, Hamaed, Fakhuri, Ghussin, Singh, and Abdelrazzaq, through Eastside, Harper Drugs, Heartland, Heartland 2, and Wayne Campus, approximately $6.9 million for drugs that the pharmacies did not have sufficient inventory to dispense.
From January 2013 to January 2016, Medicare, Medicaid, and BCBS allegedly paid Cholag and Khreizat, through Universal, approximately $1.5 million for drugs that the pharmacy did not have sufficient inventory to dispense. From January 2011 to February 2018, Medicare and Medicaid allegedly paid Maki, through City Drugs, approximately $3.7 million for drugs that the pharmacy did not have sufficient inventory to dispense. The indictments further allege that the defendants received significant funds from their participation in these schemes.
An indictment is merely an allegation and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
The FBI and HHS-OIG investigated this case with assistance from the Michigan HHS-OIG. Trial Attorney Howard Locker of the Criminal Division’s Fraud Section investigated the case, and Trial Attorney Claire Sobczak is prosecuting the case.
The Fraud Section leads the Medicare Fraud Strike Force. Since its inception in March 2007, the Medicare Fraud Strike Force, which maintains 15 strike forces operating in 24 districts, has charged more than 4,200 defendants who have collectively billed the Medicare program for nearly $19 billion. In addition, the HHS Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, working in conjunction with the HHS-OIG, are taking steps to increase accountability and decrease the presence of fraudulent providers.
The year 2020 marks the 150th anniversary of the Department of Justice. Learn more about the history of our agency at www.Justice.gov/Celebrating150Years.
