Omar Rudberg is a very attractive young man. So I find it hilarious (though somewhat sobering) that nobody at Hillerska seems to notice Simon is gorgeous. All because he’s a lowly non-resident (and a socialist to boot, who refuses to act grateful to be allowed around his social betters), they pretend Simon’s looks are nothing out of the common way. It shows the pressure of class solidarity.
Makes me wonder, though, how many Hillerska boarders secretly have crushes on Simon. Because, you know, they have eyes, even if they don’t dare admit it to their friends because it would be social suicide. Are there girls in Simon’s classes who wistfully sigh over how aesthetically appealing he is? Or fellow choristers who covertly watch him sing when they’re supposed to be watching the music teacher and/or reading their scores?
I wonder how many girls quietly cried themselves to sleep right after the video came out. And told their curious roommates they were crying because apparently the Crown Prince is unattainable. But really they were crying because apparently Simon Eriksson is gay. And therefore definitely off the market, if those girls ever got up the guts to cross class lines and acknowledge how crush worthy he is.
P.S.
Incidentally, I don’t think Simon intentionally went back in the closet when he moved to Hillerska. It’s just we know from 1.01 that hardly anyone has spoken to him since the start of the school year. It’s kind of tough to come out to people who are pretending you don’t exist and won’t talk to you.
And then Wilhelm arrived, and was obviously interested but extremely closeted himself. So Simon had a large incentive not to arouse the suspicions of their Hillerska school mates by coming out himself. I don’t think Simon was hiding in S1 so much as just not choosing to actively bring it up. I’m pretty damn sure if someone had asked him flat out, he would’ve said he’s gay. But nobody did ask, so he and Wilhelm could continue to fly under the radar as close platonic friends.
We can also infer from Saran’s comment in 1.03 “Why are you sneaking around?” That at Marieberg, Simon was out and proud. But he wasn’t a pariah at Marieberg. People actually talked to him there. And he wasn’t deeply in love with a closeted guy at Marieberg.
It could also be another reason (as if Simon needed another) that Simon feels so betrayed by Wilhelm denying the video in 1.06. Simon has already compromised his principles for Wilhelm even before the video, by making allowances for Wilhelm’s closeted status and sneaking around secretively. And Wilhelm repaid Simon having previously compromised his principles by abandoning him altogether.
It’s one thing to let people assume you’re platonic friends and not actively correct them. It’s a whole other ballgame for Wilhelm to actively lie to the press and the entire world. Assertively affirming his (nonexistent) heterosexuality and his single status.

Spoilers!!!!!
Making them break up in episode five would really ruin it for me, even if they end up getting back together in the next episode bc it means that they haven’t learned how to communicate, they haven’t actually grown as Lisa and the rest said and this repetitive back and forth makes it look like they won’t last for a minute after the season is over. We already know that there is never much time between ep5 and ep6 so getting them back together after max 10 days would be kinda absurd.

Idk, i feel kinda empty. I guess the ending wasnt exactly what i hoped for. Like i kinda wanted Wille to not abdicate but dude did not want that shit so it makes sense and im happy about it. It was eating him alive.
Simon is a small town boy in big arcade and i love that for him
I guess in a another universe theres king Wille or just prince Wille and king Erik
Also Sara is awesome and Felice
I dont care about August
10/10 life changing experience, loved every second of it

I think it’s entirely possible for someone to be both scared OF their partner and also scared FOR their partner. Especially during or shortly after their partner has had a temper tantrum. People are complicated.
Either way, what Simon witnessed at the birthday party was enough for him to decide to cut Wilhelm loose. What Simon’s precise motivations were beyond what he said out loud at the time, we don’t know for sure. But we know he wanted out.
I think people got Simon's reaction to Wille's outburst wrong. People have speculated about Micke's violent tendancy ever since we saw him, but it was never confirmed in the show (except that time in season 1 when he grabs Simon, but it might have been a one time occurance, we don't know that. I also think it's important to say that it was confirmed in season 3 that Simon only stopped seeing his dad because of Sara, not because he didn't want to), and I think that's why people think that Simon is scared of Wille in that scene.
But hear me out. Would you go into bed with someone who just scared you? Would you?
Also, in that heartbreaking scene, Simon says that he sees how the situation his hurting Wille and that seeing him hurt hurts him too. I think with that outburst, Simon was shocked to see how deep Wille's trauma is, how deeply he is hurt by his familly. And that hurst Simon too because he loves Wille and he hates seeing him like this.
And someone pointed out that Simon is fully aware of Wille's temper. He saw that video of him getting in a fight in that club. He saw Wille treatening August with a gun. And he never said anything about it.
So I really believe that Simon wasn't scared of Wille in that scene. I think he was scared for Wille. And that's another thing.
However we can all have different opinions so please don't come at me for that as I totally respect other opinions.

That scene with Wille and Simon at the lake on the ground looking at each other is way too sad to be anything other than a goodbye. I see Wille deciding to not abdicate because the only way to make meaningful change to the monarchy that would benefit people like Simon and his family, is to do it himself. It’s also obviously very late in the season based on the weather.
I also think the fight between Wille & August is one of the scandals Kristina says can’t keep happening.
Lisa is anti-monarchy so splitting up a beloved fictional couple because of the monarchy, would be in alignment with her sentiment that they should be abolished.

Went through a whirlwind romance that ended in a semi-tragic unresolved event that could possibly turn into a real life sequel or at a very least an interesting time skip. Wondering if I should do the classic writer move and create a fanfic based on my own personal tragedy just so I can process what I went through

Honestly, kind of hoping Wilmon break up in episode 4 or 5 🫣 like I will sob so hard I get dehydrated if it happens but they’ve gotta be ultimately endgame in ep 6 if they break up before the end of the season right? Right???

Wille’s never had to earn anyone’s love by proving he’s a good person to them before Simon. He’s also never LOST anyone’s love and trust before by hurting them. Simon dumping him in 1.06 was the ultimate proof to Wilhelm that Simon had only ever wanted him, didn’t give a shit about him being royalty. If anything, Simon fell for Wilhelm despite his royal status, rather than because of it. And Simon cut Wille loose when Wille personally betrayed his trust. So Wille failed the test.
Simon also was only 16 at the time of the video leak, and you have to be 18 for an NDA to be legally enforceable. He couldn’t have signed one, which is presumably why the royal court didn’t try. Simon was devastated by Wille’s betrayal, and he could very easily have taken all the texts, DMs, and emails he and Wille had shared over the past few months to the media. He would’ve gotten revenge, and the entire world would’ve known Wilhelm had lied like a rug in his media interview in 1.06.
Simon didn’t seek revenge. He proved himself totally trustworthy without an NDA, even after Wille himself had proven himself untrustworthy to Simon. The prince who hesitated to trust outsiders had been betrayed by insiders (his cousin and his mother), and protected by an outsider. Even after he broke that outsider’s heart and Simon wanted nothing more to do with him.
We see right from the start of 1.01 that everyone wants to hang out with Wilhelm, and it’s very difficult for him to identify who’s just being a sycophant. Makes him cynical. As we see by him testing Henry and Walter in 1.01 at the dinner scene, and them failing the test dismally. It becomes immediately apparent Henry and Walter are sucking up to the prince and matching their opinions to his. Rather than just being friendly to the new first year Wilhelm, and not having any ulterior motives. So Simon’s active truculence towards the Swedish royal family must have been so fascinating to Wille!
The only friendly Hillerska student whose motives Wilhelm doesn’t seem to find suspicious is Felice. But he’s known her since preschool and in 1.03 we see he’s on first name tames with both her parents. So presumably Felice is someone he’s run into repeatedly over the years between preschool and high school. They’re not close friends, but he likes her well enough, and seems happy to spend more time with her once he’s been forced to attend Hillerska. He is totally oblivious, though, to the fact that Felice has a massive crush on him.
Also, in the car with Minou at the very beginning of 1.01, Wilhelm protests he doesn’t want to go to boarding school because all his friends are in Stockholm. But we subsequently see him have zero contact with his friends from his old day school. You’d think if they were good friends, they’d still be texting back and forth even after he moved to Hillerska.
Suggesting that Wille’s friends at his old school might have been friends with him for his status, and dropped him once he was no longer physically present to enhance their status. Either that or it was one of his friends who filmed the fight and uploaded the footage to the internet. It had to have been someone who was physically close to Wilhelm at the time the other guy grabbed, to get that particular footage.
So maybe it was a so-called friend who uploaded the video, making him a meme and resulting in him having to grovel on national TV. And Wille dropped the whole group as a result. Or he got angry at a member of his friends group who did that, and the rest of the group closed ranks around the friend who filmed the fight, instead of siding with him. If Wilhelm was being sent away from Stockholm, his long distance friendship would be less desirable to the group.
One of my favorite aspects of Wille and Simon’s dynamic is how they accidentally give the other exactly what they’re looking for in a romantic relationship.
Wille falls for Simon instantly - which is so special to Simon because he’s never had someone who’s love he didn’t have to earn.
Simon, on the other hand, makes Wille kind of work for it - which is so special to Wille because he’s always felt like people love him instantly because he’s a prince. He’s never had to earn someone’s love by proving himself as a person to them.

The birthday breakup
For some reason I have been musing over Wilmon's birthday breakup and what might have happened if Simon hadn't done it. I'm very interested in what possible futures might have played out and I'm convinced that if they hadn't split up then, they would never have ended up together.
Tumblr media
When Wille excuses himself from dinner, Simon is trying to negotiate the situation as best he can. Wille is allowed to be upset, but he's also abandoned Simon to two people who barely know him, are talking without him about someone he never knew, and have nothing in common with him except Wille. Polite as the three of them are to each other, Simon and Wille's parents don't really know how to interact with them at the best of times, and this is not the best of times.
What Simon sees and hears when he goes to talk to Wille in the corridor is really important. He offers to leave. He can feel the air vibrating with tension and he knows that his presence is just standing in the way. Wille wants to hash things out through talk while his parents are in denial. Simon's presence provides a shield for them all to hide behind; we need to be polite and pretend everything's fine in our first real interaction with our son's boyfriend.
Simon's offer to remove himself is actually the most sensible thing he can do. He's fairly casual in the way he offers to go, and also in the way he says to Wille, "Please don't leave me alone with your parents like that." It's making his wishes clear and honest but keeping things as light as he can, not wanting to increase the tension in the air.
Wille, though, is incredulous that Simon even suggests this but his main response is "I… I need you here!"
In that moment and in the scene that follows, I think Simon sees what their future will be if he accepts the role he's being set up to play. He'll be Wilhelm's mascot, his buffer, his shelter from the storm.
I'm not suggesting that Wilhelm is the selfish one and Simon's the selfless one, because things are more complicated than that. Wilhelm loves Simon for himself. But Wilhelm at the palace inhabits a different world and is under different pressure, and as the cracks worsen he needs Simon there to comfort him and soothe his feelings and be on his side. Wilhelm hasn't had anyone on his side in the palace since Erik died. At the palace Simon is his buffer, his shelter from the storm.
But having Simon there will also mean Wille has a crutch to lean on, and an excuse to keep going in the same old patterns with his parents, because he thinks he can bear it as long as he has Simon. And that means he will stay in this role, he will keep trying to fit himself into the wrong shape, even as everything cracks and shatters around him. And eventually things with Simon will sour as well.
Tumblr media
Simon can't fix the family relationships, and he can't stop the bad things from happening, and he can't give Wille the tools he needs to cope because - like Wille - he's a teenager. A teenager who has no idea how to operate in Wille's unfamiliar royal world. Wille needs Simon to ward off the bad atmosphere, but he'll only end up poisoning them both. So Simon needs to go. Going might not fix anything, but staying definitely won't. It will give Wille an excuse to maintain the status quo.
So Wille doesn't give up the crown for Simon. Absolutely not. But Simon's action in breaking up with him helps to create the conditions that make Wille able and willing to give up the crown for himself.

wilmon + “there was a shuffling noise, and then simon’s dark silhouette disappeared outside the tent”
This arose from the oh no is simon CRYING in the tent scene?! conversations. Also, I don't think I've written Felice's POV before!!! I changed this to present tense because it Felt Right to me and I knew you would want me to follow my heart <3
There's a shuffling noise, and then Simon's dark silhouette disappears outside the tent.
Felice waits for Wille to follow. He doesn't.
Something in the way Simon had quickly averted his gaze when she entered the tent earlier is nudging at the edges of her sleepy consciousness, keeping her awake. She debates just shaking Wille awake and telling him to go check on your boyfriend, but she heard them fighting, so maybe Simon wouldn't even want that right now. With a small huff, she sits up.
It's freaking cold outside of her sleeping bag, even with her puffy vest and fleece-lined leggings, but at least the moon is full over the forest when she steps outside, so she doesn't have to turn on her phone flashlight. She hesitates, one hand still on the tent flap; maybe Simon has actually just gone to pee? But then she sees a hunched form on a fallen tree on the edge of their campsite.
Dry pine needles crunch under her sneakers as she creeps towards him. He hears her a few paces away, glancing over his shoulder, and the moon shines on his wet eyes before he quickly looks away, one hand rising to swipe at his cheeks with his sweatshirt sleeve.
"Oh, Simon," she whispers. She sits closer to him on the log than she otherwise would, and after a moment's hesitation puts an arm around him. She can hear his breath hitch a little at the offer of comfort. "Are you okay?"
He starts to nod, then shrugs and shakes his head all at once; it ends up a noncommittal gesture that is probably, she thinks ruefully, accurate.
They sit in silence for a moment, Simon trying to hide his sniffles as Felice rubs a hand up and down his arm.
"Have you ever had a summer job?" he asks quietly.
"No," she admits, wrinkling her nose at him when he glances at her. "Sorry."
He chuckles wetly and shakes his head. "You don't have to apologize."
"Is that what you two were fighting about?" She isn't sure she wants to know; she likes Simon, of course, but she feels like she's Wille's friend first. She's navigated enough of other people's friendship fights and relationship breakups to know better than to try to counsel both parties.
"No. I mean, yeah, but. Not really." He looks at her, and she isn't sure whether to hope for him to say more or not. He seems to have the same debate with himself. In the end, he shakes his head a little and looks back out at the trees, chewing at his lip.
"I'm sure you guys will figure it out," she offers, but it feels hollow even as she says it. "He's crazy about you."
"Yeah," Simon murmurs. "I should probably just focus on that."
She doesn't stay long after that, leaves him on the log with a gentle squeeze to his shoulder. He looks up at her gratefully, but she can still see his downtrodden expression when she's back in her sleeping bag, trying to sleep again.

Truly just paused in my tracks because my brain had A Thought, and that Thought is Marcus Sköld (from young royals) and Tommy Kinard (from 9-1-1) give off the same vibes. Granted, they both have very little screen time in their respective shows. They’re dismissive of their partner’s signals and verbal requests (Simon not wanting anything serious with ANYONE post-video/breakup with Wille, Buck talking about his struggle with Bobby’s near death experience while Tommy makes a daddy joke). They’re both so clearly plot devices for a different endgame ship (Wilmon, Buddie), but a few wild corners of each fandom started shipping them with their temporary love interests anyway. They don’t fit in with their partner’s inner circle (we barely ever see Marcus interact with anyone besides Simon, Tommy has bad blood with basically Buck’s entire family that knew him before the two of them met). They’re willing to take shots at their partner when they feel like they’ve been done dirty (Marcus during the ENTIRE breakup scene with Simon at the stables, Tommy making a closet joke and almost outing Buck to Eddie and Marisol bc Buck didn’t cop to being on a date the first chance he got). Neither are genuinely trying to connect to their partner, or if they are, it’s done with a marginal amount of effort (Marcus coming to the dance at Hillerska, but later berating Simon for not appreciating this effort taken enough, Tommy coming to the bachelor party for Chimney that Buck plans, but without an actual costume, and leaving as soon as everyone decides Chimney’s a no-show…unlike Eddie, who sticks by Buck’s side for literally the rest of the night).

I’m still sad about young royals being over. like sad over losing wilmon hours. I can’t explain it, but even with a happy ending…it feels like a breakup.

"What do you want from me? Please tell me, because I have no idea why you keep coming back to me."
"What do you want from me? Please tell me, because I have no idea why you keep coming back to me."
Wille’s voice sounds exhausted, as if he has no energy left in him and it makes Simon pause. He had hoped that nearly a year after their breakup, enough time had passed to maybe consider giving being friends another shot, but the hurt etched onto Wille’s face tells him that his presence is doing more harm than good.
He swallows down the lump that he can feel blocking his throat. It’s just not fair how this still hurts so much and how even now, looking at Wille makes him forget any of the reasons they broke up in the first place, because some part of him is still convinced that there is no place more important to be than Wille’s arms.
Wracking his brain for an answer, Simon realizes he doesn’t know what to say to Wille. What he does know, is that the past year, trying to exist without Wille by his side has been hard, that even after months of being broken up he would find himself turning around to point out a funny shaped cloud to Wille, that his flat has never felt this empty before, that after coming home from work there is nothing more than to kiss Wille hello, but that he would settle for being Wille’s friend if that was what he could get.
He reaches out to Wille’s hand, intertwining two cold fingers with warm ones and following Wille’s gaze down to them.“I don’t know”, he admits, “but can’t we just… see where this goes?” A thumb strokes over the back of his hand, giving him courage to breathe out a shaky “I’ve missed you.”
