I'm the person who talked about Jewish NY.
My point was that they improved *between seasons* and got actual input after realizing their mistakes. My point was that if they had tried to depict Poland in season 1, they probably would have caught more in season 2.
Ymmv on whether they actually improved, but there was a difference between season 1 and season 2. As the other confessor pointed out, having one non-malicious golem isn't much. But in S2 they did have a rabbi consulting, Rabbi Shais Rishon. And "emet" is written on the roof of Willy's mouth, which differs from many sources but is still relevant. Kingston consulted with a rabbi in character. (They get more into golem lore and discuss how Willy isn't really a traditional golem). It was a plot point---they even had the truth/death thing tie into the greater themes of the villain.
There is a *lot* we can talk about wrt how Dimension 20 portrays Judaism and the general culturally Christian atheist vibe they fall into, but that wasn't the point of that post. It wasn't about achievement. It was about *improvement.* Recognizing failures and making an effort to be more mindful and consult stakeholders between seasons.

What is the antisemitism in TUC season 1? Does it have to do with Wally the golem?/gen
Tumblr media
[ID: an ask from an anonymous tumblr user that reads "would love to hear more about the antisemitism in unsleeping city! was a while ago that i watched it and can't remember what you might be referencing but definitely want to be aware of it.]
no, it's not about willy the golem -- i actually think willy is a great addition to the season (even if i wish we got to see more of him), and an indication to me that brennan/the showrunners were definitely trying to be sincere and inclusive. i want to make it clear that i don't think anything antisemitic in tuc is there intentionally; i think it's there out of simple ignorance, which is also why i think fans don't frequently see/comment on it either. but i don't think that's an excuse, either.
my grief with tuc1 is largely centered around its portrayal of robert moses as the villain. especially by making him a greedy, power-hungry lich working en league with bloodsucking vampires. (also his mini is literally a green skinned skull man in a suit. yikes.) here's the thing; i know robert moses was a real life horrible person, who actually was racist and powerhungry etc etc. and i know that robert moses, the real actual person, was jewish. my grief with tuc1 is not that they chose to use robert moses over literally any other person (real or fictional) to be their season villain (though i'd be really curious to know what tuc1 would have looked like with a different villain), but that they chose to take a real jewish person, turn them into an antisemitic caricature, and then only barely add other portrayals of judaism to balance that out.
like, tuc isn't completely devoid of other jewish representation. as you mention, there's willy the golem -- and again, i really like willy, and i love that it's a portrayal of a golem that's faithful to jewish folklore (ie as a benevolent, guardian construct rather than a mindless destructive monster. i am not a fan of how 'golem' is so frequently misused as a generic enemy creature in other fantasy and ttrpg spaces, including other seasons of d20). but as i said earlier, i wish we see more of him in the season, because he's not around very much, and feels a little more like worldbuilding than a full character to me. also, he's not human. jews are people.
the only other human jewish character in tuc1 is...stephen sondheim. which, again, yeah, that's a real person who really was jewish. but i really wouldn't blame you if you had no idea of that when watching tuc1. maybe from the name you could guess he might be jewish, but i don't think people ought to make a habit of trying to 'clock' someone being jewish by having a 'jewish-sounding' surname. as he's portrayed in tuc1, you'd never know he's jewish, unless you happen to already be pretty knowledgeable about the man in real life. it's far more likely you'll know him as a theater legend than anything else (may his memory be a blessing).
now i'm not saying that brennan or the showrunners should have played up the jewishness of Real Person Stephen Sondheim to counterbalance the depiction of robert moses; that just feels weird to me, especially considering that sondheim was literally alive when tuc1 was filmed and released. it's a tricky thing to portray real people in fiction alongside made up characters, especially when they are contemporaries, and i don't think 'outright caricature' is the way to go about that. nor do i think that moses' jewishness should have been played up at all, because again i don't think that would have been particularly true to the person/character, and also Fucking Yikes. but, c'mon, if you hear the names 'moses' and 'sondheim' next to each other, which one do you associate more with judaism?
and as it stands, these are the only representations of judaism in tuc1. one admittedly nice but very minor nonhuman character; one human character you'd never be able to tell was jewish; and a third human character who, while never explicitly referenced as jewish, plays into some really hurtful antisemitic stereotyping. and it was a choice to not include anything else. maybe not a deliberate one, probably more likely one made out of simple ignorance than anything else, but a choice nonetheless. in a city with one of the largest and most visibly jewish populations in the country, and a culture that is inextricably influenced by that jewish population. a jewish population which has been and continues the target of rising hate crimes for years. i know that nyc means different things to different people, and everyone's nyc is their own -- but my nyc is jewish, and it sucks that that its jewishness is referenced directly in only one very minor way, which is greatly overshadowed by its, in my view, really insidious indirect references.
i don't know exactly how to go about addressing this. obviously, the show can't be changed by now. even if it could, i think the final product would be very significantly different from what it is now if the villain was something/someone else. i think including more references to jews in new york, more (human) jewish characters, hell, even mentioning hanukkah celebrations and menorahs in windows (it takes place in late december, after all; depending on the year it's not at all out of place for hanukkah to coincide with xmas!) would help. having literally any more positive jewish representation in tuc1 would, i think, help balance the bad stuff that's there. because, yeah, robert moses was real and he was terrible and he was jewish. but he's one jewish guy in a city with over a million jews, the vast majority of whom are just normal people. i don't want him to be the only vision of us that people get, in tuc1 alone or in any media. i'm not saying that jews can't or shouldn't be villains in fiction; but especially if you are a goyische creator, you should be really careful in how you're portraying us, and if there are other contrasting depictions in your work, too, in order to not (even accidentally) demonize jewish people as a whole.
#sasha answers#anon#unsleeping city#the unsleeping city#long post#sorry for not putting this under a read more but i think people ought to see this. or at least#if two people felt the need to ask me about it then at least they would want to see the full thing uncovered#also fwiw i do think that they tried to address this to some extent when they made tuc2#with more scenes with willy (and incorporating more golem folklore with the animating word in his mouth -- nice touch!)#the jewish immigrant family in the photo flashback encounter (even if the hanukkiah in the picture isn't exactly kosher lol)#and ESPECIALLY rabbi mike. i ADORE rabbi mike. i think he's a WONDERFUL addition#i do still wish he was a more important/prominent character. cause again he isn't in it all that much.#(and he's still like. the only new jewish human character in the campaign.)#but i recognize what he represents and i am happy about it#i do think brennan & the d20 crew tried to improve after tuc1. i do. i see their efforts and i applaud them for it#but still to my knowledge they haven't ever directly addressed the errors made in season 1#and it's extremely rare that i even see other fans mention it#and like. sorry but i am tired. i am. we deserve better. we deserve portrayals in media that show us as People#not just as evil monsters#anyway you're welcome to rb this but be cool in the notes esp if you're a goy#other jews are welcome to (respectfully) disagree with me if they want#also if you so much as mention the word israel on this post you're getting blocked end of

I think TUC and his consults with a rabbi for Willy helped in that regard. Season 3 adventuring academy with Eric Silver also talked about that a bit iirc, it was very interesting!
I don’t know if any non-Jews noticed this in the last d20 ep but Brennan has changed how he refers to Gulsum, the Mordred Manor real estate guy, from golem to construct! When Gulsum was first referenced in sophomore year he was called a flesh golem, but in junior year he has been called a flesh construct. In episode 12 of FHJY Brennan even made sure to correct himself when he misspoke and said golem instead of construct, which proved to me this was an active effort on his part.
The term golem comes from Jewish mysticism and has religious connotations so some Jewish people find it offensive when the term gets co-opted into fantasy settings without regard for the original source. It’s cool to see Brennan moving away from that and trying to find less loaded terms to use instead, like construct.

Oh ya, sesepinya sekarang, wilayah aku balik sore sama Ezzat, lalu Wildan & Abil. TUC Habieb Rahardjo.
Sebatas link up tempat ngaji. Rasanya tempat yang belum keluar simulasi Indonesia. Kalau HI UII Siber dikeluarkan dari grup WA. Patangpuluhan udah jadi dua pas, kemarin, kok drama pisah juga ngapain. Sapen, no comment. Willy, Abil, Ustadz Ari Wahyudi, Rangga, Ustadz Afifi, Majeedr, Yasirroni, Yasin Agung Nugroho, Fauzi Rais Amm angkatan selanjutnya, dsb.
Jadinya trade off-nya teman ngobrol.
Pandega itu kayak jalanan di Bandung tapi di outskirt kotanya. Tapi letaknya di Jatim.

I’m actually still working on it! I want to make a list of 1) the books that inspired the season and 2) which book(s) I’d recommend based on the vibe of the season— but I’m also trying to re-read these bad boys before I go recommending Willy Nilly! It’s def in the works.
However, if any of you are super into this idea, I should let you know that the whole reason I wanted to make this list was because The Unsleeping City reminded me of a mix of The Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare and The City We Became by NK Jemisin. I definitely recommend the later if you’re a TUC fan :)
One day I’m going to honor my promises and make a master post of book recommendations based on Dimension 20 seasons.

No worries my dude, I appreciate the commentary. It always felt a bit weird when Kingston’s parents or Willie or Sophia’s family. Brennan relies in TUC on broad stereotypes of different boroughs that equate them to actually being racial. Italian, Black, Jewish, and Polish voices and stereotypes. Especially using the icon of the golem and how offensive DND has used the Jewish terminology for a religious piece. It leaves a bad taste in your mouth, even if you trust that Brennan isn’t racist.
YEAH!!! YEAH!!!!!!! I LOVE THE UNSLEEPING CITY DEEPLY BUT THIS IS REALLY SOMETHING TO KEEP IN MIND.

wrt to the commenter who said 'they portrayed Judaism respectfully' and 'They got Jewish New York right', they really didn't?
The only 'Jewish' NPC/ background stuff they had was Willy the Golem, which they made pretty Jewish, which was great! Though the character art was lacking the word 'אמת' on his forehead, which is a *very* significant portion of the story.
But more importantly: A single non-human NPC (literally made of stones) not being actively bad is *not* getting Jewish New York right, nor in anyway a portrayal of Judaism.
Get me a Jewish NPC (or PC, but I can't imagine that ending well), who takes the Sabbath and other Holidays off, and doesn't strugle to break free from the rules of the religion (as an aside why do almost all Jewish characters in media date non-jews exclusively?), and then we'll talk about portraying Judaism well.
(which isn't to say that the bad portrayal of Polish culture etc. wasn't terrible and/or offensive, just that the portrayal of Judaism shouldn't be used as a counter example of them doing it 'right')

If no one’s asked yet: Dimension 20?
I’ve done Fantasy High, so I’ll just do Unsleeping City, if that’s okay!
How I first got into it: Was Big Into It from Fantasy High and the first ep of TUC was...a masterpiece
Everything I ship: Ricky/Pete is fun and good. Kingston/Liz. Esther/Sofie and I will DIE on this hill.
My favourite platonic relationship(s): Kugrash and Sofie’s relationship is so deeply stupid and so funny. Kingston and Kugrash gets me somewhere real emotional. Pete and Kingston and Pete and Kugrash. Kingston and Alejandro.
Top 3 Characters: Again gonna do NPCs because I’m literally incapable of choosing between the PCs. Probably Alejandro, Willy, and Esther. Uh...shoutout to Stephen Sondheim as well?
One of my favourite scenes: YOU SHOULD HAVE TOLD THAT TO ISABELLA BEFORE SHE CAME AFTER ME.
Links to three fan works I like:
This Kugrash combined with its caption sends me into hysterics
Ma’am, your baby is too hairy
This Ricky is SO good
(Also I’m gonna shoutout my own fic because I can)
Favourite Fandom meme/inside joke: I...don’t really know about any? Unsure.

i am going to attempt to put some of my feelings into words now, actually. if you don’t already know me: hi, i’m supercantaloupe, and i’m that jew who wrote a really long post about tuc’s cultural representation (especially focusing on its relative lack of jewish rep) a few days ago! if you didn’t read it (and i don’t blame you bc that sucker was Long) i stated my frustrations/disappointments with tuc in regard to its jewish representation, expressed my ambivalence/mixed feelings towards its representation of other cultures, and stressed my continuing (if slightly cautious) interest in and love for the show despite its flaws.
i know these episodes are prerecorded, but i can’t help but feel like tonight’s episode was almost tailor-made to respond to my thoughts. the biggest issue i took in tuc’s representation of jewish people is simply the lack of it -- an issue which is not 100% immediately retconned and remedied by the introduction of rabbi mike saulters, but it damn well does a lot to improve things.
now we have more willy content! now we have more willy content that is authentic to jewish lore regarding golems! the whole thing about being animated with the hebrew word אמת (”truth”) and disanimated by erasing the first word so it reads מת (”dead”) is a real aspect of golem mythology in judaism! from the moment willy was mentioned as not doing so well in the beginning of the season i had a suspicion he was being disanimated, and when brennan mentioned the letters in his mouth tonight i could barely contain my joy.
and then who does kingston get to help? not just a jew, but a black, visually orthodox/conservative rabbi. this is the first fully original human character in tuc who is jewish, and jewish in very visible obvious ways. he’s a rabbi, he’s visibly jewish (he wears a kippah and tallit katan, the prayer shawl worn under his shirt with the tzitzit (fringes) danging below), he’s a kabbalist (kabbalah is jewish mysticism, a closed practice to nonjews and often considered off-limits even to those who are not already learned torah scholars -- i personally think this is a very neat way to tie judaism into the magic of the unsleeping city!), and he’s black. if jews in media are underrepresented in general, black jews are way more so; especially in nyc, with a large jewish population that is also perceived as largely or entirely lightskinned/white-passing, the deliberate choice to make rabbi mike saulter black is huge.
the fact that rabbi saulter has been kingston’s friend for so long he helped with the met mummy quest almost thirty years ago. the fact that rabbi saulter talks like a jewish person (referring to gd as hashem and having a blessing in hebrew ready to go for literally any occasion reminds me so much of, like, every rabbi i know). the fact that the theme of null erasing history and cultural memory directly thematically ties in with real issues facing american jewry today; when brennan talked about kids from the neighborhood not being able to read hebrew anymore, i felt that. null erasing the letter א to disanimate willy explicitly parallels the way pete named null in the first place, by seeing them erase the words in latin from the building in nod. that this threat of erasing history ties directly and mechanically into the lore of golems is very cool and well implemented! but also...my mother grew up going to hebrew school, learned to read and speak hebrew, went to summer camp, went to israel, actually learned the language. i grew up going to hebrew school and i only learned enough hebrew to get me through my bat mitzvah -- i’m barely literate, nowhere even close to conversational, and deeply disappointed that i never got this part of my culture growing up. this problem brought up by rabbi saulter and willy in the show is real, and i feel it.
i cannot fully express my excitement and joy at finally seeing more jews in tuc, and seeing jewish culture tying into the story in an important way. and i’m for sure not the only one who feels this way about seeing themselves represented in the show: i watched tonight’s episode with a chinese-american friend of mine, and the excitement and joy she expressed to me hearing about and meeting the shen family was infectious. does tuc still have its problems? yeah, for sure, and one episoded of good rep does not absolve any past mistakes or retcon anything bad into suddenly being good. but as a step forward, tonight’s episode was a really big one for me. and i’m really, really happy about it.

Brunswick Centre by late architect Patrick Hodgkinson The Brunswick Centre is a Grade II listed residential and shopping centre in Bloomsbury, Camden. It is located between Brunswick Square and Russell Square. The centre replaced streets of run-down Georgian era terrace housing.
It was designed by British architect Patrick Hodgkinson in the mid-1960s, based on studies by Leslie Martin. It was initially planned as a private development at a time when private, mixed-use development in the UK was rare. Building started in 1967 and was completed in 1972.
St Pancras Renaissance London Hotel Gothic as a style has been living it’s revival in culture for some time now, to mention the most recent fascination with vampires thanks to the Twilight saga at the very least. There is a romantic notion of gothic architecture giving home to spiritual secrets and creating fantasy worlds.
