it really is something how ultimately it is the six spearwives that save jeyne poole (and theon), mance supposedly leads them but we don’t see his planning and they’re ultimately the ones who carry out the plan so imo his leadership isnt especially significant. and from their perspective they don’t really have any reason to do so. it’s unclear if the spearwives know mance to be mance, ie if they had ever seen the man himself in person before his supposed death or if they merely gathered beneath his banners and/or gradually migrated w the rest of the free folk to beneath the wall in preparation for winter. if they do know that mance rayder is himself and alive, then they may feel some lingering loyalty to his cause, which leads to them to this adventure.

however I prefer the alternative theory. if the spearwomen didn’t know it was mance OR did know but had lost faith since his capturing, then they would’ve presumably had some other reason for this mission to save ‘arya’. they wouldn’t have any especial loyalty to jon the crow.. maybe they sought glory and honor tho those are more of southron cultural norms than northern ideals + it’s a secret mission aside. but by this point the tales of (supposed) arya’s torture and mistreatment by ramsey have been spread to varying distances, from the other lords gathered in winterfell and possibly to stannis’ host that marches on winterfell. plausibly, it could’ve reached the nights watch in varying ways as well.

while it’s more likely the women went for a variety o political reasons, I like to think that at least some of them heard the story of a poor girl being brutalized, and went to rescue her not for glory or honor or fame but just because she was a little girl who needed help, and they were the women to protect her. how at the end of the day it is so often women who are left with the job of saving each other. and in the end they pay for it with their bodies and their lives

Not "shake a lemon angrily at G-d" week, but rather;

Gather a citron, an ancient fruit predating the cultivation of lemon. Notice how it has a wonderful aroma, and consider how its flesh is edible. This represents the Jew who is both learned in Judaism and who exhibits kindness and good deeds.

Now gather the closed frond at the center of a palm tree. Consider how sweet the dates of the palm taste, but how the frond exhibits no strong smell like the citron. This represents the Jew who is learned in Judaism, but who does not practice the compassion in the many texts they studied.

Now gather at least three branches from a myrtle bush. Take in the refreshing scent oozing from the branches' thick leaves, but see how it does not bear fruit. This represents the Jew who is not learned in Judaism, but whose good character and actions are exceptional.

Finally, gather two branches from the somber willow. While mighty and enveloping, the willow exhibits no strong aroma, nor does it produce fruit. This represents the Jew who is neither learned in Judaism nor kind in character and deeds.

Appreciate the various textures and shapes of these four species. Feel the weight of them in your hand. Value how different in so many aspects each of them are.

Take them all in your hands, and bind them together like an embrace. Point them in all the corners of the earth- South, North, East, heavenward, downward, and West. Think of all your Jewish brethren scattered around the world, and bring your precious bundle back to your heart with every direction you send it to. Contemplate the place of every Jew in your community, the Etrog, the Lulav, the Hadas, and the Arava, for they all belong.

This is the meaning of Sukkot: coming back to our roots and our bare essence. Erect a temporary dwelling in reminiscence of your wandering ancestors. Come together under the stars, as exposed and unguarded as when we first walked the earth. Welcome guests into your makeshift home, be they family, friends, or the spirits of founding ancestors passed. Surround yourself in your community- and bring it all back to your heart.

Yes, today is Sukkot! Sukkot is the "Feast of Booths"! The festival lasts seven days in Israel, and eight days in the diaspora. Sukkot is observed by “dwelling” in a temporary walled structure with a roof of natural materials called a sukkah. The holiday has agricultural significance, it is the Feast of Ingathering, and served to signify the way the Israelites shielded themselves from danger following the Exodus from Egypt. In addition to eating meals in the sukkah observances include gathering the Four Kinds, a citron, a palm frond, myrtle twigs, and willow twigs. Chag Sameach! Have a joyous Sukkot!

I chose to ask you and not op because i’ve sent you an ask before and know that you answer them. So real quick, why did you type out G-d rather than God or god? Does it have something to do with Judaism? Is it just for the faithful to follow and not goyim? As an atheist who was formerly Catholic i just wanna learn more and be respectful of others’ religions whenever i can. I know next to nothing about Judaism, even though they’re a good portion of my county’s population. Hope this ask isn’t insensitive in any way, and thanks for taking the time to read this <3

This isn't insensitive to ask. It's actually a great question, and I'm glad that you asked if you're curious.

Since those articles cover your asks pretty well, I'm gonna give you some free bits of info to help your quest for respectfulness, which is pretty rad, btw: we don't really use phrases like "the faithful" bc Judaism doesn't require faith in G-d. There is no conflict between Judaism and atheism & there are a lot of Jewish atheists and agnostics. Judaism is an ethnoreligion and a people in a way that a lot of religions aren't, and in fact, the symbolism for one of my favorite holidays emphasizes that we are not complete without all kinds of Jews:

The functions of the four species are defined by both their smell and taste, or lack thereof, along with some interesting imagery from the Midrash (Vayikra Rabbah 30:12): The etrog has both taste and smell, representing people who both perform good deeds and have Torah (knowledge). The lulav has taste but no smell, representing those who do not use their knowledge to perform good deeds. The hadass (myrtle) has smell but no taste, representing those who perform good deeds but lack the knowledge to excel at them. The aravah (willow) has no taste and no smell, representing those who lack both.

"Good deeds" here doesn't just mean "being nice to your neighbors" but refers directly to performing mitzvot/mitzvahs, the 613 commandments that observant Jews observe to varying levels of specificity and intensity.

It's not offensive to use a phrase like "the faithful," just isn't ... correct, you know? Instead, you'd just say Jews or Jewish people. If you're trying to refer specifically to Jews who are religious or believe in G-d... there isn't exactly a phrase for that, I guess you'd say "observant," because there are a lot of Jews who are observant but also atheists, since observant Jews may be observing mitzvaot for any number of reasons that have nothing to do with belief in the existence of G-d.

Anyway, there you go, with some bonus info. As always, I don't speak for everybody, 2 Jews 3 Opinions, etc.

Happy Turning Day!

This is the movable holiday in my personal calendar when the approach of autumn is celebrated. Turning Day marks the day when reddening maple leaves are first observed prior to the autumn solstice. In my area, this typically happens in early September.

Maple trees tend to be the first trees to display seasonal changes. They blossom in late winter/early spring, their seeds begin to drop in early summer, they often show the first signs of color change in early autumn, and their sap runs in winter the minute the weather starts to turn toward spring thaw. Thus I look to them in my practice as harbingers of change and the cycles of life, growth, and harvest.

Other personal holidays in my calendar include:

First Robin Day - the day on which the first wild robin is seen following the winter solstice, heralding the spring

First Flowers Day - the day on which early blooms are first observed in local gardens before the spring solstice

Planting Day - the day on which I plant my first round of seeds for the year

Dandelion Day - the day on which the first yellow dandelion appears in my yard in springtime, heralding the summer

Falling Flowers - the period during which blossoms from cherry or myrtle trees start to come loose and drift on the wind or collect in piles

Spirit Day - the day on which the local Spirit Halloween opens

First Frost - the day on which frost is first observed on windows ahead of the winter solstice

(Due to climate change and my local climate zone being different from the one I was raised in, seasonal changes are a bit off-kilter and solstices and equinoxes don't always directly align with the type of weather I grew up knowing. So watching for these little signs helps me to celebrate those changes and have something to look forward to.)

My Hogwarts Castle Design

Some of my notes regarding it can be found here and some of my rambling about the castle's architecture here.

In this post, I'm just going to post the images I came to as an amalgamation of all book quotes regarding the castle's structure merged with the basic structure and some floor plan elements from Hogwarts Legacy (since the castle is gorgeous and similar in aesthetic to the movies versions. I'm saying versions because every movie had a differently designed Hogwarts).

Maybe I can make a post regarding all the book quotes that went into this design like Ron saying the lake is to the south of the school (PoA), the DADA and the Transfiguration office have a view of the Quidditch Pitch (OotP, PoA) and the Quidditch Pitch is near the lake (OotP), the lawn for the flying classes is on the opposite side of the grounds to the Forbidden Forest (PS) and the Whomping Willow is visible from the Herbology Greenhouses (CoS), the moving staircases aren't accessible from the ground floor near the Great Hall (PS), Myrtel's bathroom near the DADA office (CoS), hidden passage with the trick step being near the DADA office on the 2nd floor (location mentioned in HBP, but the passage itself is mentioned in multiple books), etc.

So without further ado, my attempt at a Hogwarts floor plan:

There might be some inaccuracies, becouse this was a crazy puzzle to try and make sense of so I tried my best based on various quotes in the books. Locations we know exist but aren't told anything about where they are, were just placed down where I thought reasonable.

I kept the common rooms/dormitories layout similar to that in Hogwarts Legacy (since it's pretty), but I made sure all of them would have enough dorm rooms and bathrooms (which isn't the case in the game).

I tried to make the scene in which they accidentally run into Fluffy's room after the Trophy Room, and I think this sort of works for what Harry describes if you squint. The description just doesn't make much sense when trying to keep the general structure seen in the movies/games.

Can you give me a metaphor to describe each of your blorbos?

A fun fact about me is I had to ask for clarification in regards to the term ‘blorbo’. If I’m understanding correctly, a blorbo is any character— be them from an established fandom or your own work— one daydreams about, fixates on, or otherwise turns their mind to for the purposes of escapism and entertainment.

While contemplating this new-to-me word, I encountered a post lamenting the dominance of male-aligned blorbos in fandom spaces. Apparently, it’s more common to see people openly obsess over such characters. I figured I’d do my part to further the female-aligned blorbo agenda by sharing with you the twelve “princesses” from my urban fantasy fairytale retelling.

Without further ado, here are the metaphors I thought up to describe the twelve “princesses” of the story.

Elowyn is that first crisp, dark breath of autumn breaking through the bright summer haze

Juniper is a crowded bar colored by cigarette smoke, strong liquor, and the glow of crooked neon signs

Holly is the warmth of fresh baked bread lovingly shaped by steady hands

Linden is the ruthless precision of a disciplined artist after decades spent honing their craft

Laurel is a steaming mug of curative tea sipped on a stormy night spent curled up in bed

Rowan is a bold, burning flame of determination in the quiet gloom of despair

Acacia is a sturdy, stolid mountain among flimsy, frantic reeds

Cassia is glossier than the pages of a fashion magazine— the wide, white-toothed grin and flutter of thick, black eyelashes she offers the crush of paparazzi just as artificial

Myrtle is every bit the coiled serpent— poised, beautiful, and unmistakably deadly

Olivia is owlish in her large, round reading glasses, her thin frame perched upon the window seat, an open book clutched in her hands

Willow is that first vivid swirl of paint on a stark, blank canvas

Hazel is a cheery shaft of golden sunshine shattering the dull morning’s fog

At first, I had the idea to compare each of the sisters to their sacred animal. Today begins Sukkot, the Feast of Booths. The festival lasts seven days in Israel, and eight days in the diaspora. Sukkot is observed by “dwelling” in a temporary walled structure with a roof of natural materials called a sukkah.

The holiday has agricultural significance, it is the Feast of Ingathering, and harvest time in Israel, and also served to signify the way the Israelites shielded themselves from danger following the Exodus from Egypt.

In addition to eating meals in the sukkah observances include gathering the Four Kinds, a citron, a palm frond, myrtle twigs, and willow twigs.

The whomping willow is Minerva's fault.

She's nineteen and heartbroken. Nineteen and furious. She goes to Hagrid, because he's the only one who understands, the only one who knew Tom when he was young and yet never got caught up in the shine of his charm and intelligence.

Hagrid used to be Tom Riddle's best friend. Minerva had never believed that Myrtle was killed by his spider. Acromantulars don't kill like that. She knows that. Tom knows that.

The school board should have known it too.

But Hagrid was too brilliant for a half giant they'd let in on sufferance and expelling him had been a relief. She'd thought Tom was better than that. She'd convinced herself for a long time that he just made a mistake.

"Maybe he didn't mean it like that," Hagrid says, his large hand warm on her shoulder. "He's always had a lot of ideas."

"There's something wrong with him," she says. "And no one is listening to me!"

She'd tried to go to Dumbledore about it, but he hadn't said anythin, hadn't listened. He won't hire Tom to teach defense but he won't do anything about him either.

She supposes that he hasn't done anything to do anything about. Yet.

It will be too late then.

"I'm listening," Hagrid says, a touch defensively. "I always listen."

"I know," she says, pulling her giant mug of moonshine closer. "Thanks."

Tom isn't the man that she thought he was.

She hates that it's his mark on her skin.

So she drinks, and drinks, and drinks, and doesn't remember much after that.

The next morning she squints into the sun and looks up at the strange monstrosity of a tree hovering at the edge of the grounds. She has to stop casting drunk. They're going to stop letting her back on the grounds at some point.

"What did you do?" Hagrid asks, standing to block the sun from her eyes.

A bird tries to land on its trunk like branches and almost gets smashed to death of the trouble.

"It's fine," she says, because the answer is she has no idea. She just knows she was mad. It looks like the tree is mad too. "I can't have put that much power behind it. It'll fade eventually."
