Jake Owen - Loose Cannon

So today on the MSR (Midnight Star Review), I would like to talk about the latest album from Country Music Singer Jake Owen. This new album is titled "Loose cannon" and was originally released digitally on June 23rd, 2023, and a physical copy was available on Friday October 21st, 2023. But before we dive into the new 16 track album, let's talk about the career of Jake for a little bit before.

Jake has had big hits with songs like "Down to the Honkytonk", "Made for you", & "Anywhere with you. Jake also had songs like "Barefoot blue jean night", "Beachin'", & "American Country love song. Jake has scored 4 number ones on my weekly list MSR (Midnight Star Report). My MSR combines both CMT (Country Music Television), the Billboard Country Music Airplay Charts, & even myself. The list used to include GAC (Great American Country) until the list officially retired at the end of 2018. Now back to the new project up next.

The current single is "On the boat again", and other songs you should check out are "Go getter", & "Hearts and habits is a stand out track in my opinion. Also check out songs like "When it all shakes out", "Hopeless", & "It don't, he won't and you do". He pays tribute to the Andy Griffith show intro with "Nothing". And that's a wrap for the track list. And on the MSR (Midnight Star Review), I would give this new album a 4.5 out of 5 stars. I am not a fan of the digital albums, so with Jake deciding to make a CD that didn't have to get digitally. Another well-rounded album from Jake with a lot of songs that I had to highlight. On 29th February 1904 the Pavilion Theatre, Glasgow, opened.

Designed by Bertie Crewe for Thomas Barrasford, the Pavilion Theatre opened at the corner of Renfield Street and Renfrew Street, Glasgow on the 29 February, 1904. It was regarded as luxurious for its time with its decor being described by the owners as “pure Louis XV”. An electrically operated sliding roof ensured good ventilation.

Performances in the early days were mainly variety, melodrama and pantomime. Many of the leading music hall artistes of the period appeared at the Pavilion, including Marie Lloyd, Little Tich, Harry Lauder, Florrie Forde, Will Fyffe, Sarah Bernhardt and a then unknown Charlie Chaplin.

Since the 1930s, the Pavilion began to host pantomimes with top name stars of the Scottish variety scene, such as Harry Gordon and Dave Willis. In more recent times it has produced plays, such as ‘The Sash’ and ‘The Steamie’.

The Pavilion Theatre is now the only privately run theatre in Scotland and one of a few unsubsidised independent theatres left in Britain.

“Defying all the odds, Glasgow’s Pavilion regularly purveys variety to this day. All the more remarkable as it is completely unsubsidised and receives no funding from the Scottish Arts Council and kindred bodies whose thoughts and cash are directed at higher cultural activities. It remains the last stronghold of a long music hall tradition in Europe’s City of Culture owing everything to a dedicated staff and patrons and nothing to the public purse.

With its imposing terra cotta facade, the Pavilion Theatre of Varieties was designed by Bertie Crewe in the grand manner for Thomas Barrasford. The domed ceiling was surmounted by an electrically controlled sliding roof for ventilation. Fine Rococo plasterwork on the circle, balcony and box fronts; decoration executed in pure Louis XV; handsome mahogany woodwork and the marble mosaic floor all lent the 1800 seat theatre an aura of splendour.

No less amusing than the dentist advertising in the Pavilion programme “painless extractions with nitrous oxide for 4/- (20p) or cocaine for 1/- (5p)”, were the press observations on the “fashionable company” which attended the Pavilion’s first house on 29th February,1904. We learn that “among the elite there was quite a preponderance of ladies and gentlemen of quality in evening dress”. Alas, class consciousness and respectability were all in Edwardian Britain!

The ‘forties and ‘fifties saw pantomime runs of sixteen weeks, the happy and hilarious summer seasons were emulated during the 1960s and early 1970s by Lex McLean. Another regular crowd puller to Renfield Street was Jack Milroy.

Lulu from Dennistoun (real name Marie Lawrie) broke box office records in 1975, Billy Connolly, Hector Nicol Andy Cameron portrayed their own distinctive brands of humour while Scottish songstresses Lena Zavaroni, , Sheena Easton, Lena Martell and Barbara Dickson also scored heavily with Pavilion audiences.

It was anything but plain sailing for the Pavilion and there was gloomy speculation of closure after incurring heavy financial losses in 1981. Spared the fate which befell the Queens, Metropole, Empire, Alhambra and Empress Theatres, the 80 years old Pavilion was rescued by James Glasgow and transformed into a modest profit maker. Smash-hit shows with Sydney Devine; spells from hypnotist Robert Halpern; pantomime with Denny Willis, and one night gigs from the foremost modern television entertainers have kept the cash tills registering.

The Pavilion also played a major role in the annual Mayfest – Glasgow’s International Festival of popular theatre, music, the arts and community programmes.

Little altered and virtually unspoilt since its inception, the seating capacity of 1449 is made up of 677 stalls, 341 circle, 413 balcony and 18 box seats. While the stiff shirts in chauffeur-driven cabs have given way to coach parties from the rural areas of Strathclyde and beyond, a policy of providing the best in live entertainment has been pursued consistently. The portents look good for the vibrant Pavilion Theatre of Varieties.”

The Pavillion is, in my view a survivor, even over the past few years tragedy has struck the area with a series of fires.

You wipe the mud from your face sweat dripping down your forehead, you check the time on your watch 4:30 P.M. looking back at the volcano you promise you'll comeback bright and early tomorrow. You walk to the dock to board Willy's boat, on the way back you see fish swimming near the top of the water, you fill up on a few magma caps before you pull up to the dock. After you reach the shore you immediately make a run for your farm.

You check in with your animals before entering the house. When you enter an inviting waft of tropical curry flies in your face.

"Oh my god Leah that smells Devine" You sigh as you approach her wrapping your arms around her waist.

"And you stink, go wash up and hurry wouldn't want to miss this delicious Tropical curry" she teases in a sing song voice.

You quickly run to the bathroom to shower rinsing your hair and body before changing in a stretched out T-shirt and some soft sweatpants, you head back into the kitchen taking notice of the new arts and crafts on the kitchen table, you look at your beautiful wife and take notice of her in one of your favorite hoodies and a pair of shorts, Leah turns over her shoulder to look at you.

Smiling gently she asks "what are you standing there for? for come and eat" she says handing a bowl to you.

You roll your eyes and grab the bowl before dishing up and walking to the couch, you place your food down and pick up the fluffy blanket before holding it up for Leah to slide under, you pick up the remote and put on your guy's comfort movie. After it started you grab your bowl and begin digging in.

"How was your day my love?" you ask.

"It was fine, I nicked my hand while wood working, and then I had to run into town because I ran out of paint" she sighs in a grumpy tone.

"What about you?" she asks you in return.

"Not much just the usual fighting lava creatures and nearly burning to death" you say sarcastically.

She laughs before standing and taking your bowls to the kitchen, she comes and sits back on the couch, you roll over and stretch out letting her arms wrap around your middle section laying her head on your chest.

"I love you, and I'm glad you came back home safe" she says breathing in a breath before releasing it.

"As am I" you reply.

Eventually she fell asleep in your arms, you pick her up bridal style and carry her to the bed, tucking her in you go to your side and get under the covers, you hear her shuffle, she tucks herself in your arms her head laying on your chest.

"Sorry I tried not to wake you up" you whisper out in apology.

"It's fine, I just missed you today" she admits into the side of your neck.

"Do you have to go tomorrow?" she asks in a quiet tone.

"Well I guess I can take a day off" you sigh looking at her with a smile.

"Thank you my dove" she exhales into your neck.

You both drifted into a peaceful slumber cradling each other closely.

If Shakespeare's Juliet could be played, as it was in its first performances, by a boy, then why shouldn't she be played by 34-year-old Norma Shearer? Truth be told, I don't find Shearer's performance that bad: She lightens her voice effectively and her girlish manner never gets too coy. It also helps that William H. Daniels photographs her through filters that soften the signs of aging: She looks maybe five years younger than her actual age, if not the 20 years younger that the play's Juliet is supposed to be. I'm more bothered by the balding 43-year-old Leslie Howard as her Romeo, though he had the theatrical training that makes the verse sound convincing in his delivery. And then there's the 54-year-old John Barrymore as Mercutio, who could be Romeo's fey uncle but not his contemporary. In fact, Barrymore's over-the-top performance almost makes this version of the play a must-see -- we miss him more than we do most Mercutios after his death. Edna May Oliver's turn as Juliet's Nurse is enjoyable, if a bit of a surprise: She usually played eccentric spinsters like Aunt Betsy Trotwood in David Copperfield (George Cukor, 1935) or sour dowagers like Lady Catherine de Bourgh in Pride and Prejudice (Robert Z. Leonard, 1940). In the play, the Nurse rarely speaks without risqué double-entendres, but most of them have been cut in Talbot Jennings's adaptation, thus avoiding the ridiculous spectacle of Shakespeare being subjected to the Production Code censors. No, this Romeo and Juliet won't do, except as a representation of how Shakespeare's play was seen at a particular time and place: a Hollywood film studio in the heyday of the star system. maybe this has already been discussed so apologies in advance if this is the case - but - talking about recovery for the girls made me wonder what that recovery process would look like for Cleven and Brady? Smith seeing Maureen still wanting sex with Gale because he is a good man has me so soft, but also made me think of how he couldn't get it up for her when she tried to initiate and oh-my-god was it due in some part to what he had been through with Sanchez before they got to camp?

Foaming at the mouth for the chance to talk about this because I don’t think I’ve really gotten an ask about it before. And I sprinkled a helluva a lot of Easter Eggs into A Wedding & a Willy and held my breath to see if folks caught them. 🤭 because these two boys are so dear to me and the shit they went through was devastating, as well as how the women play a part in both their recovery and their hypocrisy. ..that’s a harsh word but it stands.

Cleven, in the hazy trajectory I have figured out for him, shoves the first trauma -Sanchez incident- down so far he thinks he’s technically fine. I feel like perhaps he’s been in similarly threatening situations as a half abandoned child and young adult? And this was something he’s almost half expected. It makes it no easier but he tells himself it is. Then almost a year goes by and there’s no reason to worry about a repeat. Not really. Except he thinks maybe he should, or maybe he’s enjoying the break since someone else is living that hell for him. A subordinate he ought to be taking the place of. If only Brady would talk to him, dammit.

So for a bit, and with Maureen present, he can act like nothing happened, the fact she seems so sexually unaffected by her own trauma assures him he probably is too, and together they can find some comfort in the old acts. Although, there’s times he can’t really, and he doesn’t dare tell her why. But I think she suspects. Or she does later, after she notices more about Brady, she starts to study Cleven. And let’s remember she and Gale sorta freak-out-bonded when she pretty much outed him from his Bucky closet. She’s sophisticated and brash, a man liking a man doesn’t shock her, neither does the reverse threat surprise her. And her lack of squeamishness about it helps tremendously with both Gale owning up to what’s happening to him during the SA, and then his healing postwar. After the war he can admit he’s very much not ok, but that’s a good step towards becoming ok. I think he’d struggle with the fact he liked men before, the shame and social stigma of that compounded by then being assaulted. She helps with that. So does Bucky tbh. I think all this impacts how soon they have kids, and there’s a whole plot line about whether he’d ever be willing to testify about those crimes.

Now for Johnny, oh poor man. There was no liking men before this. Not at all, and while he was no naïve idiot, there’s certain things he just never expected obviously, and certainly not in a context of them being required from him. While in camp he is a fucking champ, or he is 99% of the time and is mentally an absolute legend. And Gale admires that tremendously and they’re very together on handling things, but, after the war? It’s utterly impossible to be with each other much. At least right away. And Brady is in a positive rush to become as normal as possible. He married right on coming home as if Pussy has some Devine healing properties (it kinda does, bless Tilly) and has his many kids and his job and is very nosy in his sister’s business as if he can heal himself by proxy through her. Ultimately it’s just a slow thing for Jack, yet not an obvious one, and before too long he and Cleven can be amiable again, never normal perhaps but they’re sociable. It was simply unthinkable for them to be at each other’s weddings, at the day when they “become a man” but, christenings? Christmas parties? Etc. are on the table.

And Bucky Egan has opinions on his boys and their recovery so, he works hard at it. Bless him.
