Number one, Socks the cat.

 Although much has been said about Socks the cat in the intervening years since the Clintons left the White House, dangerous, brutal, one of the most effective political leaders of our or any other time, it has been a great definitively and totally that Socks elevated what a presidential pet could be. Turning the office from what had been at once a merrily ceremonial position into one of the more powerful positions there is.

Number two, Nixon's Checkers the dog.

Checkers the dog is a myth, a legend in the White House.After that mysterious chandelier fell in the White House Grand Opera Ballroom, Checkers the dog has been reported throughout the White House skulking and terrified with his half mask.

Number three, the Kennedys 'Pushinka the space dog

Little known fact. The Kennedys were gifted a Russian space dog who went to space. True fact. The dog who rarely ever barked would often spend hours looking often to the distance, as it may have seen something horrific in the grand infamous, vastness of space.

Number four, Calvin Coolidge's pet hippopotamus billy.

Calvin Coolidge's pet hippopotamus, affectionately named by Martin Van Buren who was affectionately considered by many to be one of the presidents named him billy or William Johnson Hippopotamus . billy would often sit alone, playing with sticks, arranging them by twos, and then by threes, and then by fours, and then by fives. Disorganizing it and doing it once again. Boy, did they not love Jeff, but acknowledge that Jeff was there as a hippopotamus simply living Jeff's life. billy was small and quiet for a hippopotamus so he was over a couple of hundred tons, but that was simply just billy's life. till that one day but that's a story for other day.

White House Pets #6 - Billy - Pygmy Hippo

Billy was a gift given to Calvin Coolidge. It was captured in Liberia and given to Coolidge in 1927. Billy didn’t live in the White House spending most of his time at the zoo in DC. 

Billy was a stud for the DC zoo and fathered over 15 calves. During the time at the zoo he earned a nickname which was William Johnson Hippopotamus.

So we give Washington a lot of (justified) shit for naming his dogs things like Drunkard, Tipsy, Mopsey and Sweet Lips, but I would like to also submit to the jury that many Presidents have done far worse.

- John Adams had a dog called Satan, who lived in the White House

- Thomas Jefferson had two grizzly bear cubs, a bird called Dick who ate out of his mouth, and a herd of sheep living on the White House lawn which attacked passers-by and killed a six year old boy

- John Quincy Adams was given a baby alligator by the Marquis de Lafayette. He kept the alligator in a White House bathroom for six months and used it to scare guests until it grew too large to reasonably be handled.

- Andrew Jackson's parrot had to be removed from his funeral because it wouldn't stop saying fuck

- Martin Van Buren was given two tigers by the Sultan of Oman

- Benjamin Harrison had two opossums called Mr Reciprocity and Mr Protection

- Theodore Roosevelt had a black bear cub called Jonathon Edwards, a badger called Josiah, and four guinea pigs named Fighting Bob Evans, Bishop Doane, Dr Johnson and Father O'Grady

- William Taft had a cow called Pauline who provided milk for him

- Woodrow Wilson had several sheep and one of them, Old Ike, liked to chew tobacco

- Warren G. Harding had two dogs called Old Boy and Laddie Boy. Laddie Boy had a seat in Cabinet meetings. He was interviewed by the Washington Post in 1921, where he spoke about Prohibition and shorter workdays for guard dogs and I swear to you this is all true

- Calvin Coolidge named his dogs Peter Pan, Paul Pry, Rob Roy, Tiny Tim, Blackberry, Ruby Rough, Boston Beans, King Kole and Palo Alto. Oh, and he also had a cat, a donkey, a goose, a bobcat, an antelope, two lion cubs, a wallaby, an antelope and a fucking hippopotamus.

(Fun fact; this hippo was a pygmy hippo, and he was donated to the Smithsonian National Zoological Park. If you see a pygmy hippo in a US zoo today, it's probably descended from him.)

- Herbert Hoover had nine dogs and his son had two alligators which wandered the White House grounds

- FDR literally had a dog called President, and also one called Murray the Outlaw of Falahill who earned the rank of private in the US Army.

- Lyndon B. Johnson. Oh my God. This guy. He had four beagles, named; Beagle, Little Beagle, Him and Her. And I thought the using-his-dick-size-to-intimidate-people-when-he-wanted-something story was the weirdest thing about him.

- And as we all know, Barack Obama had the best of all; a pet Joe Biden.
