BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE (2024)
Starring Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O'Hara, Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Jenna Ortega, Willem Dafoe, Danny DeVito, Burn Gorman, Arthur Conti, Filipe Cates, Nick Kellington, Santiago Cabrera, Sami Slimane, Amy Nuttall, Mark Heenehan, Liv Spencer, Skylar Park, Matt Lyons, Jane Leaney, David Ayres and the voice of Charlie Hopkinson.
Screenplay by Alfred Gough & Miles Millar.
Directed by Tim Burton.
Distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. 105 minutes. Rated PG-13.
Earlier this week, I was excited to see the ghost with the most is back in action. Hundreds packed the Philadelphia press screening of the long-awaited sequel to the 1988 cult classic Beetlejuice – and while it has finally arrived, it’s great to see it has not lost its spark.
Admittedly, going in I feared that a modern remake couldn’t hope to compliment the original, but I can say that it really did deliver. The style and effects were still true to Tim Burton’s classic style, just more polished and cleaner, considering the newer technology. For example, I was impressed that the oddity of the Netherworld had not been compromised by slicker effects. Instead it was heightened and was a true homage to the original.
Much of the original cast returned to the fictional town of Winter River, CT for this second installment including Winona Ryder, Micheal Keaton, and Catherine O’Hara all reprising their original roles. Joining the cast were talents such as Jenna Ortega, Willem Dafoe, Monica Bellucci, Justin Theroux, Danny DeVito, and many others.
The plot was set for a wholesome story about reconnecting the now grown Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) with her teenage daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega). Of course, their emotional healing process is constantly interrupted by questionable men, and the killer ex-wife of none other than Beetlejuice himself. I was able to thoroughly appreciate the writers’ ability to follow different subplots, while remaining coherent with the main story.
Of course, no movie is without its flaws, and while the movie was still able to make sense with many subplots, I felt there may have been a few too many. It was my feeling that giving Astrid one focus subplot, specifically about her father and trying to reunite with him, would have given a cleaner development for her without some oddly placed tension due to a love interest. Regardless, Arthur Conti did a good job in his role as Jeremy, and his plot twist was very well executed.
A consistently incredible aspect of this movie was its humor. The performances of Michael Keaton (Douglas), and Catherine O’Hara were especially incredible throughout. Overall, the cast played off each other beautifully and delivered a delightfully hilarious performance together.
I highly recommend seeing Beetlejuice Beetlejuice when it comes to a screen near you this Friday. Not just for its all-star cast and how well it complements the original, but the soundtrack is also amazing. It includes “Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)” from the original movie, and also 70s classics like Donna Summer’s “MacArthur Park,” Jimmy Buffett’s “Margaritaville,” and The Bee Gees’ “Tragedy.”

They’ve all seen John Wick and Triple Frontier and have very strong opinions.
What are their opinions?
Sorry for taking long to answer this anon! Had a busy work week, but here we are now :) Moon Boys + John Wick / Triple Frontier
tw: spoilers for John Wick and Triple Frontier, animal dying, violence?
John Wick
Marc relates to John's character, with his military/merc history, finding the love he never thought he deserved
the movie is made for dog lovers (I mean not really but still yknow), all of your moon boys hate that scene but they get it, get the rage that would surface if it were them
little puppy Daisy HAS STEVEN MELTING, he was so alone for a while, he wishes he had a little companion like that other than Gus
Jake hates the scene where the guy is just slapping the Mustang and asking for a price, he's shuffling uncomfortably during it and mumbling Spanish swear words at his character
Steven hates the death of the dog so much, hates the way they showed the violence for it and almost wants to turn off the movie but instead lets Jake front to let him process and gather his bearings
Steven does come back out when the Vulture (B99) pops out, "Oi, what's he doin' in a film like this?"
obviously from there, the action just picks up and the boys switch fronting to comment (Marc appreciating a certain move, Jake bragging "I can do that, too, but with less grunting")
Steven is a Willem Dafoe fan from Wes Anderson films and Spider-man
honestly, the whole hard-to-get-out once you're involved thing gives Marc major flashbacks of Khonshu's initial deal, so he heavily relates to John
the silent lethal way John moves reminds them of some of their heavier, ruthless Moonknight nights
the copper taste of bloodshed is brought back to Marc from his mercenary days, the pedestal of an iconic ex-assassin making him wince from the glamour they've painted his reality with
as cheesy as some of the dialogue is - which they critisize, "nobody talks like that in real life" and "this guy sounds like a pendejo"
"I knew I liked that guy!" (Steven about Willem's character, he always was good at reading people)
after all that action, John goes to adopt another dog which makes Steven really happy and the other two content with the way everything was settled in the end
overall, they would NOT watch it again, opinions being it was borderline triggering for Marc even though they related to John's portrayal, they wouldn't go through that again so they didn't bother with the sequel
Triple Frontier
you somehow convince the boys to watch Triple Frontier, even though they see straight through your interests, "its only because Poe and Mando are in it," Marc says rolling his eyes
first ten minutes and he's already complaining about how tight Santiago's pants are
Jake fronts when he starts speaking Spanish, squinting his eyes, closely listen to his accent, immediately taking a liking to Santi
Steven fronts to say he gets bad vibes from Tom, shaking his head and frowning, "no, no, don't like that one"
Marc loves the soundtrack, "You know I'm a sucker for Stevie- no not you, Steven, Stevie Nicks"
Marc surprises you by saying Fish reminds him of a friend of his, and says his and Santiago's relationship is similar to what they had
he likes this movie better than John Wick, he can understand their initiative, their purpose, and takes a liking to the team's brotherhood
Steven doesn't miss the way you ogle Santi through the bar scene, popcorn falling out of your hands when he starts beating at the wall to get at the money, jumping to call you out on it
Jake starts shaking his head at Tom's greed, "This pendejo is going to get them killed"
eventually, they get quiet after Tom's death, most likely thinking of Marc's past, and their own battles
you spend the last half hour of the movie looking back and forth between their face and the screen, trying to make sure they're alright
they definitely like this movie better than John Wick, commenting that the ending was more fulfilling than the other, and mumbled something about reaching out to Frenchie
errr, hope this fulfilled... what you wanted LOL

"John Wick" movies are made just for me. I mean, me specifically. Not only is the action spectacular, but the casting is seemingly catered specifically to my niche interests: "Oh look, it's Sully from Commando as Charlie the Cleaner! What a fun little 80s character he would play!" "Oh look, here's Ian McFuckingShane as the boss of the hotel, basically his character from 44 Inch Chest!" "Oh look, Mark Dacascos from Drive as a fan boy ninja who runs a sushi shop, and whose apprentices are the guys from The Raid and The Raid 2. Man, I am so happy people are going to see why he is cool!" "Oh look, it's Brian Butterfield as The Sommelier, what a wonderful use of Peter Serafinowicz!" "Oh look, it's Clancy Brown as the Harbinger: the most Clancy Brown name, character description, and part he could possibly play. FINALLY we're getting big budget roles worthy of that man. And his beard." "Oh sweet! John Leguizamo is in this being a fucking badass! More of this Leguizamo please, I want to see him as the lead in a revenge thriller!" "Oh look, it's Lance Reddick!" (RIP King) I remember showing the first one to my friend, who also shares my niche movie interests and watched the same videotapes I had, and he basically went: "What the fuck is he doing here?!" When David Patrick Kelly, Ian McShane, Lance Reddick, John Leguizamo and Willem Dafoe showed up. When the credits rolled, his only words were: "The one thing I EXPECT Peter Stormare to show up in, and he doesn't. Amazing." A week later Peter Stormare was cast in "John Wick: Chapter 2" I took my girlfriend to see 4 in the cinema and kind of annoyed her with how hyped I was for Scott Adkins getting a big budget blockbuster movie, and by the end of it (after going: "Oh look, it's Natlia Tena as a Gopnik Punk!" amongst other things), when we had recovered, she admitted that he was fucking great. This movie series is letting a new audience appreciate some actual fucking legends, and let people go nuts.

Poor Things: A Review
I had high expectations of Poor Things upon hearing it was meant to be an arthouse film featuring stars like Willem DaFoe, Emma Stone, and Mark Ruffalo. The teasers were refreshingly mystifying and revealed very little about the movie’s subject matter. Adding further to the picture’s credibility was the endorsement of one of my favorite movie critics. Awards season hyped the film even further, and I was anxious to see it at the Tower Theatre this week…
Tumblr media
Pros:
* The camerawork and cinematography are exquisite in this film and perfectly reflect the experiences of the main character. To paraphrase another critic: Yorgos Lanthimos uses contrasting black-and-white/color frames, exaggerated focal lengths, dramatic camera angles, and a Steampunk-inspired aesthetic to create the contradictory world the characters live in
* Dafoe, Ruffalo, and Stone submit decent performances
* The narrative is filled with cliches (likely purposefully so), but director Lanthimos also carefully laces the movie with several refreshing plot elements. As a result, he brilliantly departs from narrative convention in a way that reflects his storytelling prowess
* The Frankenstein-inspired premise will delight fans of fantasy and science fiction alike
* A discordant score can be heard throughout the film and it illustrates the excited, confusing feelings of the protagonist
* The main character, Bella, is provided a very interesting backstory and is the most complex female lead I’ve seen in years. Bella is many things: emotional, loud, aggressive, curious, sex-driven, cold, calculated, opinionated — the one adjective you cannot use to describe her is “kind.” Kindness is a beautiful trait for movie characters and people to have, but Bella may be the only female protagonist I’ve ever seen who does not show the gentleness associated with other likable characters in the media. This detail alone adds so many layers of depth to a seemingly one-dimensional main character
* The dialogue is, at times, very witty, raunchy, and even funny. Some of the best lines in the movie seem to provide insight into Lanthimos’s sense of humor, and it would be great to see this material more often. It is also eloquent and thought-provoking without being confusing.
* The ending is surprisingly satisfying
Cons:
* Many unchallenging themes regarding women and sex are woven into the text of Poor Things. I love seeing “risqué” subjects like sex in film, but the conversation regarding the topic is so present in modern filmmaking that any statements made about women and sex just seem a bit pandering, passé, or even cliche
* The tone of Poor Things makes the film a relatively unpleasant viewing experience throughout
* I love that this film had the courage to depict an abusive relationship and themes addressing ableism, but both subjects were handled in an almost ignorant manner that I felt were never fully examined
Verdict: I’ve heard Lanthimos’s work is often difficult to understand and, in many cases, flat-out disturbing. For the most part, these descriptors do not apply to Poor Things. This is a relatively palatable movie and it will find its audience with the people who can appreciate the abstract nature of its themes. If you love fairy tales, fantasies, or science fiction, and want a familiar, but refreshing take on a story that has been told and retold throughout time, Poor Things is the movie for you.
Unfortunately, for me, this film is only decent at best. I saw it once, but can’t see myself watching it again (though, that might change someday). The disturbing tone and oft-discussed sexual themes kept me from enjoying the movie as much as I could, and I generally don’t appreciate narratives inspired by science fiction. (This is purely a matter of taste, however).
Despite these problems, Lanthimos offers moviegoers a treasure chest of great storytelling for a broader audience to enjoy his work past and present.

Day 1 : Favourite Scene
There’s simply too many great scenes Willem has to choose one, but I’ll go with the first one that kinda melted my heart long time ago.
Amazing acting from both Dafoe and Franco and the Osborn family being real family is what makes this scene my favorite.
Also, soft Norman!!

Willem Dafoe Appreciation Week
Day 1 ~ Favorite Scene
(This is going to be so long sorry xD )
youtube
Smoke Scene - Platoon
This is one of my favorite scenes from the movie simply because, despite their being a war, we are introduced to Elias Grodin and his men in a lighter mood, smoking weed and dancing with each other as they welcome Chris into their mix and simply enjoy themselves in each other's company. Whereas when we see Barnes with his men, they just sit around playing cards and never really interact much with one another. That comparison between the two is very interesting to me, but really I'm just a huge sucker for scenes like this. Also just the way Elias waves hello to Chris and offers him the weed makes me melt every damn time.
youtube
Barnes Crosses The Line - Platoon
This. This is the scene I love the most from the movie because we fully see what kind of man and soldier Elias Grodin is. It's not an easy watch when Barnes threatens the little girl and no one tries to stop him, but then Elias steps in and he's PISSED. He doesn't hide how disgusted he is at Barnes's actions nor the ignorance the lieutenant has to the situation and wasn't even afraid to act without any hesitation. It shows just how much of a good man Elias still is even after fighting for 3 years. Overall I was very impressed with Willem's preformance in this scene and film as a whole.
youtube
Mirror Scene - Spiderman
God this scene! THIS scene!! The sheer talent that's been given from Willem Dafoe in this one scene is mind blowing! It's so facinating to watch him play two different characters with only just himself and a mirror! It really puts an emphasis on what's happened to Norman Osborn. And bajeezuz that voice! This scene both freaked me out and fascinated me as a kid. It's what made this movie so memorable to me growing up.
youtube
Marcus's Death - John Wick
I love this scene because even when he's outnumbered Marcus still puts up a fight to die in his own way. He has no regrets saving John and is willing to die for him to keep him safe. It's a bittersweet but badass end to a great character and friend of John Wick.
