something something will byers WILL shoot a gun in s5, multiple times, and it'll work to keep the monsters at bay for a while, but in the end, when it really matters, the gun won't work as a line of defense against the horrors and will, as his instincts/defense mechanism kicks in, will suddenly unleash his powers in a way to protect himself and fight back. because the gun represents who his father wanted him to be (someone who fits in, someone who's normal, someone who belongs) and the monsters represent the homophobia and general lack of acceptance of outcasts in the world, and will's powers being what he needs to embrace to fight off the horrors will represent will needing to embrace himself. because forcing yourself to be normal is not the answer to fighting the bigotry of the world; accepting yourself for exactly who you are is your strength, and it will help you come out on top in the end.

my take on Will having a gun in season 5 is not that I want it to be his main weapon or even for him to shoot Vecna / deal the final blow with a gun BUT that instead there is just a moment between the chaos of everyone fighting for their lives. Maybe Nancy or Hopper drop their gun close to Will who's terrified at this point. Everyone's distracted with their own fight when a demogorgan spies Will stood there defenseless and charges. Will stares it down in slow motion, there's a quick flashback to him from season 1 in his shed holding onto Lonnie's gun and shaking. Then it cuts back and all at once Will moves, grabbing the gun, aiming and shooting the demogorgan in the face right as it lunges at him. The shot echoes and there's a sense of stillness for just a second as Will breaths. He did it. He finally did it. Then the fight swells again around him, maybe he takes a couple more shots before he throws the gun back to its owner and joins in with the others to run for safety.

because I don't think Will would ever really choose to be a fighter or on the offensive or anything but I think him getting the chance to shoot a gun the way he didn't even get the chance to in s1 (after he did everything right to get away but still got taken) to be able to defend himself and win would be so satisfying for the audience but also him as a character too. like coming full circle but he's grown and learnt and he's not alone now, he's not going to be taken this time, they're going to win.

Hello, Give Will Byers a Gun people. I have something to say.

I got really curious and decided to check something. I re-watched The Vanishing of Will Byers to confirm if he vanished with the gun he loaded.

He did. He was holding it up until the moment the light bulb lit up brightly. The shed was empty after when it showed us that Will was gone. It also wasn't there when Hopper inspected the place. I'm not sure if this is not new or if I'm just pointing out the obvious. I just find it really interesting, and I'm now more curious than ever.

Will we ever see what happened that week? If he vanished with the gun, did he get to use it in the Upside Down? Pretty sure it aided his survival but how he held on for that long will always make me wonder.

Season 5 will be Will-centric, so I hope we get answers. They better give Will a gun again. I want him to fight and shoot one.

sometimes i giggle when i remember that the only reason steve found out about the upside down and had his entire life plagued with danger every single year afterwards is because he was just trying to do a good thing and apologize to jonathan 😭
