Clash of the Titans
Taylor Wiley Krise
from the website: This work shows two encircling killer whales representing two different art styles of Native Northwest Coastal art. The whale on the left represents the artist’s own heritage, belonging to the Killer Whale clan of the Squaxim Island tribe. This whale illustrates design elements of the Coast Salish artistic tradition, customs to which many have lost their knowledge and connections to, but is very much alive. The whale on the right shows forms that are found in the Northern Formline tradition, practiced in Northern British Columbia and Southern Alaska. Within this whale, various Northern clans are represented (the Raven, Killer Whale, Thunderbird, and Wolf). While the title suggests conflict between the two visual customs, the piece is educational, showing intertribal differences that coexist.

Happy WBW!
🃏 - What in your world is so out there that it baffles everyone? An example from our world could be whales that are so huge we can't imagine it, or medical advances.
The weirdest thing in Yssaia is probably the true nature of the gods.
Basically all of my gods are body horror eldritch monstrocities. And the humans in my world don't like to think about them like this. Like, the God of Earth birthed humanity in this giant cavern. It's covered in pink fungi that are definitely not made of the God's flesh... or the God of Magic requires your eye for you use magic. Or the Radiant God is a magic fungus that makes you sapient.
The humans treat gods basically how you might treat any powerful person. But they are much more wiley and incomprehensible than that...

murray mcdowell sent a picture and wrote: “hi Marc, we had a fantastic St Patrick's weekend culminating in a great session in Katy Jane's Bar in Larne, Co. Antrim”
fitz ml wrote: “Marc, so glad you had a fun St. Patrick's Day. We had a church potluck with corned beef and cabbage and a lot of people showed up in different shades of green.”
Dinah emailed photos: “Happy Day after☘️ Here I am playing fiddle with Michael Hynes (duo is Fiddlers Rock) at the Golden Lion [right across road from Atlantic Ocean] in Flagler Beach FL. Last night 3/17, I came down to play St. Patrick’s Day gigs with Michael/Mike Hynes who moved here almost three years ago from MA ☘️”
Jolena Foster emailed: “Hi Mark: I'm Jolena. I used to contact you some on mastodon some. Anyway, I'm sitting outside while listening to the podcast. It's 70° right now with the temperature climbing up to 79°. Keep playing the great celtic music, and I'll keep listening.”
John L Pearson emailed: “Marc!! I often use March to dig through my own archives of Celtic music, and I celebrate long - distance with a great friend who is a Celtic jewelry maker I met at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival way more than a decade ago!
I love the podcast, and can’t remember right off the last new fav I heard on the podcast. In the last year or two I really got into Shane Henessey’s guitar stuff—not sure if I heard it on your podcast or elsewhere.
But I also pull out old favs. The Waterboys Room to Roam. Maybe not quite celtic, but a couple of the early bands had that flavor.
And I’ll put on some Great Big Sea—though sadly they aren’t around anymore, Alan Doyle is still out there making music. And when I really feel the need to get up and dance, I thrown on some Natalie MacMaster. And then when I’m tired and need to get contemplative over a green beer (at least metaphorically green) I’ll put on some Loreena McKennitt.
And I can’t begin to tell you how much great Celtic music you have turned me on to. Thank You! I’m looking forward to your St. Pat’s month podcast! Stainte!”
David Cullen emailed a photo: “Greetings from The Brogues in Townsville Australia
Hope you had a great weekend, Marc.”

In conclusion, the Minke whale neocortex is complex; it has more neocortical neurons than other mammals, but fewer than humans, despite its much larger body size. Minkes possess many more glial cells in their neocortex than do other mammals. They have a large neocortical volume and surface area, with a neuron density as that of larger mysticetes, but less than other mammals, including small odontocetes. There was no sexual dimorphism in either the neocortex or the functional areas. The auditory cortex is larger than the visual cortex and contains more cells, as expected from the acoustic behavior of the Minke, possibly because of an adaptation to the aquatic environment. The evidence of considerable complexity in the mysticetes' neocortex is consistent with their behavioral and social complexity.

ok im having my top surgery consultation in like two days and my mom is considering getting me a whale jellycat as a congrats gift . so . which whale should i get .
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
all range in the 20-24 inches size that i like (because its a good size to cuddle, and also to carry around) im a little worried about gilbert because he curves upward a little bit, and that might make cuddling and carrying difficult .
i don't have a favorite whale, so any one of these is cool . they are all also in the 75$-85$ range . so price isnt a big issue either .

The Minke whale has the highest number of glial cells in the neocortex seen in any mammal studied to date. The ratio of neocortical glial cells to neocortical neurons is species-specific and therefore varies among the mammalian groups and during ontogenesis due to changes in neuron density (Oelschläger and Oelschläger, 2002; Nishiyama et al., 2005). The glia/neuron ratio is 7.7/1 in Minke whales, 1.4/1 in humans, and 2/1 in rats. Few ratios have been reported for cetaceans: Tursiops ∼ 3/1, fin whales ∼ 5/1 (Oelschläger and Oelschläger, 2002), which shows that there is a tendency for glia/neuron ratio to increase with increasing brain mass. Consequently, the glia/neuron ratio signals the importance of glia for growing neurons, and thus for neocortical function, and they probably play a crucial role in cetaceans seen in the high ratio of glia. Since the Minke neocortical neurons seem to be very large, it is also possible that large neurons may need a higher number of glia than smaller ones. Though the Minke whale possesses fewer neurons than humans, it still has more than other mammals. This, along with the very high number of glia, means that whales evolved a substantially larger number of cells in their neocortex than other nonhuman mammals, even larger than lower primates such as the rhesus monkey.

Last call for Wiley! A week from today, my Wiley the Whale knitting pattern will no longer be offered for free on @hi.ravelry. I want to continue to offer free knitting patterns, but some are just too precious and honestly personal to me (as silly as that may sound). The positive response over this pattern has honestly helped to keep me going through the uncertainty around working from home and decreased human interaction. Feedback is more important to me than ever. Thank goodness for online communities! The pattern is available at the link in my profile, along with some other resources. Free for seven more days! Get it while you can. #freeknittingpattern #ravelry #whale #🐋 #🐳 #marinelife #Wiley #WileytheWhale #stuffedanimal #knitting #instaknit #knitstagram #knit #knitalldayeveryday #pattern #knittingpattern #knitwhale #fiberart https://www.instagram.com/p/CDl2zGwD2wS/?igshid=1aibgsx63ydl4
