Wild Kratts - Chimpanzee and Me - Thoughts
The last of this week's new episode premiere, released online today alongside Salamander Streaming and Bumblezzzz. Will air on TV this coming Wednesday so as always, spoilers ahead!
K, so huge confession but Zooboomafo was the only other show by the Kratt Brothers I distinctively remember watching. I watched a few clips of Kratts' Creatures, but mistook them for WK as a kid. This is most definitely a callback to some Chimpanzee adventure episode in KC that I did not happen to pick up. So it's totally lost on me.
That being said, my prediction of references to previous Kratt Brothers' works reigns supreme (and for those who view all four Kratt Brother shows in one hollistic "canon" here's some ammo for your fan-theories).
Look at those delicious yummy grapes... wonder if they're being saved for later.
I will still never forget when the synopsis for this episode came out about Chris spraining his ankle, as well as when a synopsis for the clip came of him tripping on grapes. The constant memes and reactions omfg /silly
But seriously this man is in PAIN. This season for what it's worth, does a lot of angst and in ways you'd never expect.
I've never sprained or broken a limb, so I'm probably in no place to talk, but from the looks of that frame, Chris bent his ankle pretty damn good. He's definitely gonna be on hiatus for the next few weeks (which could ironically be taken metacontextually since after this episode we'll be on another hiatus until next year when the live show comes)
Ok let's talk about the villain's plan here. He wants to replace his Zachbots with a Chimpanzee he can roboticize to do his work. Here are my many thoughts and takeaways from this, some of which, definitely are just me reaching.
A step up from his dumbass plan in the last episode. Not threatening, but motivations that are actually sensible (but still evil though).
More than once have I seen the theory floating aound where Zach programmed his bots to be smart enough to obey his commands, but dumb enough to where they won't turn against him. I assumed that this episode was going to end with the cliche of Zach's creations turning on him as laser guided karma (hint it doesn't) so it really puts things into perspective.
Considering how we are getting two Zach-related episodes in a row, coming just off the heels of Our Blue and Green World, I like to headcanon that Zach's overall character in this batch of episodes is some form of response or byproduct of the events of that special. Because between Paisley's sudden betrayal, Donita's callous threat of physical violence in the previous episode, and his henchmen's limited intellect, he realizes how much he is fundamentally losing control, both in the villain team, and in his own endeavors as a villain. He's slowly, yet consistently and constantly being knocked down from the pedestal that he views himself on, and by trying to change the status quo with a new animal assistant, he thinks he can keep himself up at the top where he thinks he belongs, completely oblivious to how he's his own worst enemy. Yes, I'm overanalyzing all 3 episodes and I love it.
This is another moment where I HAVE to use my one-video-only-free-card to convey the point across because a certain scene is that good. This is only a 34 second action sequence where the chimpanzees are running from the Zachbots, but holy hell the background music. I had to isolate the background noises just to share it with y'all so you can see my point as to how the music absolutely carries this scene. Pure West has always gone so hard with the scores in this show, but they were absolutely on fire for this brief chase scene. I actually tensed up seeing the Chimp's mother getting torn away from her baby as the music swole up. Yet another reason why PBS should release an official soundtrack for the series, it's so fucking good.
Ok so Chris doesn't activate Chimpanzee Powers, nor does he invent the disc but goddamnit! This entire plot is so cute, and dare I say, the episode actually works better with Chris not being the one to activate the suit.
Now I can use my allotted time to point out how much I love this scene and why it makes this episode very well-liked for most people, myself included. This isn't the first PBS Kids show to educate viewers on non-verbal communication such as facial expressions and sign language, and it's definitely far from the last, but it's a really sweet and sincere moment that's both educational, and really good rep for people who use sign language. It gets its point across efficiently and could very well reach out to any children at home who use ASL. It's magnificent.
Also, Leah is fun, I hope we see her more in future eps.
THE CHIMPANZEE POWER SUIT
Ok I take it back: This is definitely the best designed Creature Power Suit of S7. I remember dreading it because of how alike Chimpanzees and Humans are physically, but oh my god I am so glad to be wrong. It's giving full Season 1 vibes (looks a lot like the Orangutan Suit, total sense), and I am all FOR IT.
And again, I feel like I would/should be angry or disappointed that Chris didn't activate the suit, but again, the plot actually works better without him using the suit, and the design of the Chimpanzee Suit itself is so good, everything just comes together neatly.
Bro is in his peak.
I mean, still peak.
Joss pointed this out better than I could, but there are a lot of varied facial expressions for Zach in this episode. As mentioned earlier, during the hiatus in between Season 6 and 7, new builders and riggers were hired on the animation team for Wild Kratts, many of them likely fans of the show themselves. And again, seeing as there's a 2 year gap between S6 and S7 in terms of development, there's bound to be some slight differences in rigs or models. Which is definitely why we get a lot of moments like this in the episode.
My two cents. I can definitely see why people would be caught off guard, and yeah, at such a high frequency it can get off-putting and requires some getting used to. But at the same time, I kinda dig it, just for the camp factor. It also somewhat reminds me of some of the facial expressions used in the pilot episode, (which has the stronger excuse of different animation + art-style to back it up), but yeah, definitely something that catches the eye.
Zach's hair is defnitely giving Kovu from Lion King 2 and I mean this in the worst. Possible. Way.
This entire scene can be seen as an allegory for two different types of parenting. Zach takes harsh, demanding approaches, speaking without listening for the sake of control, all out of a place of emotional unintelligence and immaturity, which alienates + drives away the child; Whilst Chris takes a more constructive, compassionate, understanding, yet still direct approach to get through to the child/chimp, allowing for a proper solution to the issue at hand. Yes, I'm pointlessly over analyzing even more but in an episode where communication is the main focus & moral of the episode as well as the resolution to the climax, I have to wonder if someone, whether it'd be the writers, animators, or even network execs did it on purpose. Because once again, you could takeaway a really good lesson for kids, and even adults with this interpretation in mind.
Oh yeah, once we get past that stuff, the climax of this episode is like, really fucking hilarious. And Zach getting mind-controlled by his own helmet is still a good dose of laser guided karma.
CONCLUSION:
Cons:
A few of the facial expressions can be a bit jarring. Again, Joss pointed it out perfectly how this episode could've been earlier in S7's development so these adjusted rigs probably can and will get better. I wouldn't even say it as a con, it's just some little thing of the episode that doesn't really lower my overall opinions.
This is a personal nitpick of mine; Not a critique. I think we could've seen more of the chimpanzees in action. I'm talking about face-offs with gorillas (which I think we might get an episode on that in the future, idk), hunting monkeys, leopard attacks! But I do get why it wasn't in the episode, it would've just bogged down time. Frankly, the only reason why I'm putting the cons first is because there is so much I have to say otherwise.
Pros:
The animation overall
The backgrounds
The Chimpanzee Power Suit
The Chimpanzees themselves.
The Background Music
Chris angst!!!!!!
The A plot and B plot perfectly complementing each other, which makes certain writing decisions that could've fallen short, work so much better as a result in execution!
Zach not being a dumb POS like he was in the last epiosde!
The chimpanzee designs!!!!
The very well-handled representation and depiction of sign-language and lessons of communications to its young audiences!
Final Ranking: 9.2/10. Our Blue and Green World and No Name Dream subverted expectations (mainly through Paisley's redemption and the S1 callbacks + the return of the Draco Power Suit). This is the first episode of Season 7 that exceeded my expectations. It is far better than how I thought it would be, and the experimental writing that this season has been hinged upon thus far hit the mark entirely when it came to this episode. So much so that it actually raised the already-high expectations I had for the new season. It is that. Fucking. Good. I'd easily call it a contender for one of the best episodes of the season, but again, we'll have to wait and see.

Hi here’s an official screenshot from one of the new episodes
Poor, poor Jimmy! Please take him to a hospital to reset his bones, that looks sooooo painful! He might also need some milk, that’s looking like a calcium deficiency there! And, as mentioned in this post by @searobotsoda….Family Guy death pose:
Maybe it’s just me, but it truly seems like the Kratts/animators/directors are really sneaking in pop culture references this season.
We had a Titanic reference in Our Blue and Green World.
And we had These Boots Were Made For Walkin’ in Fish Out of Water.
It’s just interesting to me that we’ve had THIS MANY references in so few episodes.
I’m sure there are more I haven’t picked up on, and if so, please feel free to reblog with them/point them out!

The feeling when the new Wild Kratts episodes drop
Spoilers under the cut!
For episodes:
"Bumblezzzz"
"Salamander Streaming"
"Chimpanzee and Me"
fucking love how the bees are animated swaying all tranquil like,, 🥺💖
Martin is a real one forreal - everything I wear should have pockets for days or it's not worth wearing,, 😤
I love how Martin was like "it'll be quick!" And then they proceed to be out like all afternoon
RIP cake, never knew ya.. 😔😭
Once again love the way this show displays different animals and their coat patterns n such. These salamanders all look stunning af!!
Did Jimmy just fall into a family guy death pose?
I think he just fell into a family guy death pose.
Fucking. Love Koki so much in this episode. "Fine, one two three go."
Also her budding frustration!! Such a mood.
Ain't this the second time some rodent or rodent-shaped animal got into the Tortuga's walls and fucked something up with its hoarding/cacheing tendencies??
Oh!!! Interesting and lovely, the way that the chimps' mandibles move/show off their teeth while open! Or, at least, the way it was animated on this show!
The way homie did not wanna let that butternut go.....CHRIS!!
Huh! Second or third time i remember Chris doing that shaking-clearing-by-head-with-a-noise move. Somewhat similar to what he'd do in a malfunctioned t-devil suit. Coincidence? Unlikely.
Damn homie really did just bust his ass on some grapes,, XDDD
Now I can't think of anything but Chris Professor Xavier cosplay,, XD thank you for that, Wild Kratts Tumblr Fandom :D👍
Also like?? I'm pretty sure the Wolverine episode ("Iron Wolverine")'s suit was notably inspired by the character Logan Howlette.
Just cuz of the shoulder pads on that suit and the yellow stripes. Looks just like Logan imo.
AYO???? ASL MENTION???????
LETS GOOOO CHRIS USING ASL!!!!!
Also also love all these older clips of the bois in their younger days, hanging out with Chimps. Chris definitely has the energy of a camera man,, XDD
I also love that it went into some of the behaviors and communication styles of chimps, not just imposing human language n such!
Gosh. I love this show sm!!!

My thoughts on Our Blue and Green World (Spoilers Included)
I actually just wanted to discuss the big twist of the special, that being Paisley becoming an ally of the Wild Kratts team. When I first saw the episode, I was in shock. It felt like it came out of nowhere and I swear I could feel my brain struggling to comprehend what I just witnessed. I could barely follow along with the rest of the special.
However, after having some time to think about it, I think this is a twist that, while could definetly have been better executed, was done in a way that doesn't really pull a full 180 on Paisley's character to the point that it feels like a character assassination. Here is why I think that.
All the villains of Wild Kratts have one thing in common: They disrupt nature. Though while Zach, Donita, and Gourmand all actively hunt animals to use for their own gain, seeing them nothing more than resources, Paisley merely sees them as an obstacle, a hinderance to her plans. This is where Paisley really differs from the villains in a way that her redemption makes sense. Paisley's goal to pave comes from a good place.
We have heard Paisley say that she paves for the sake of mankind, creating usable space out of 'yucky', useless nature. Her methods of mass paving are destructive, but the goal itself is selfless. Paisley paved out of a sense of duty, which differs from the motivators of the other villains.
Zach, Donita, and Gourmand, on the surface level, represent corporate greed, and how some people just want more and more, but Wild Kratts shows that greed is not the sole motivator. They say pride is the worst of the seven deadly sins, and the show proves this. Pride is an enabler. It allows us to justify our actions in a way that makes sense because we supposedly deserve something. Zach sees himself as the world's greatest inventor and smartest person, Donita sees herself as the world's greatest designer, and Gourmand sees himself as the ultimate chef with a rare talent.
All 3 of the OG villains have a sense of entitlement to do what they want, and take from nature, because in their minds, they are above nature.
I certainly feel Paisley's redemption could have been handled better, but I am glad she is starting on the path to redemption, and that the writers made the switch before she could cross a line of no-return.

Ok this is an absolutely random thing i just remembered and has no true bearings on the main outcomes of the episode but spoiler warnings anyway for Our Blue and Green World 🌊🌿‼️
SO in the combat section of the episode, Whale Martin chews up some bots before spitting them out and notes he isn't going to actually EAT the metal while chewing em (Too eepy to screencap this but it happened)
But you know who HAS eaten metal?
Not only that, but is somehow FINE post-TF?
There is logical reasoning to deduce that Chris's stomach acids became mutated from the Tazzy episode to be strong enough for random objects normal humans would need surgery after consuming, much like Martin's supposed (basically canon) superstrength mutation
Is it useful? Not really, but it's funny as hell to me

SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
My opinions on the three new episodes of Wild Kratts WITH SPOILERS:
Bumblezzzz: It was so fun! Zach is a little shit, but that's to be expected. Loved Donita's cameo. I felt bad for Jimmy's cake.
Salamander Streaming: Pretty okay episode. Kind of upset that they left Koki to figure out everything wrong with the ship. But she won in the end. So it's okay, I guess.
Chimpanzee and Me: I LOVED THIS EPISODE! It was so nice to see Chris taking a bad situation and making an adventure out of it. I loved that they talked about things like sign language and just how smart chimps are! And Zach getting his own invention used on himself was a lovely bit of karma that I thoroughly enjoyed. By far my favorite episode I've seen in a long time! 10/10!

DECODED
"Martin was the self-sacrificial type. He was the one who woke up every night just to pull Chris out of a nightmare. He was the one who tested the more questionable technology Aviva whipped up. He was the one who took on extra tasks when someone wasn’t feeling well. He was the one who would take the blame when the brothers landed themselves in trouble. He was the one who would carry the burdens of everyone else around him, while locking his own away in a dark corner, and never once complain. And Chris knew for a fact, the only reason Martin didn’t trade places with him when Diego dragged him away and locked him within his own mind was because his brother couldn't work miracles. But Chris didn’t think he could share this burden with Martin. He decided he wouldn’t even give him the choice."
Reprogrammed part 2: Decoded's first chapter will be posted this Saturday.
Also special thank you to @nervousloveheart for suggesting the name "Decoded"! It's honestly stuck with me and I kinda just started subconsciously referring to the fic as that before I even officially chose the title lol

WK S7 Spoilers (Bumblezzzz)

general thoughts on the wk “our blue and green world” special (for funsies)
they had me in the beginning, by the end they completely lost me tho lolol
!! SPOILER WARNING FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN’T SEEN THE EPISODE YET !!
things i liked:
the intro was!! very good!! loved how they started in space and then gradually zoomed into earth, that was really fun :D
always excited to see how the background of the final shot changes in these specials !!
right away i am so glad they finally color corrected everything i couldn’t stand how bright everything was in season 6 T_T
chris being able to just effortlessly fold his t-shirts into a stack made me laugh lol
i don’t care if anyone says the song sounded flat as hell. the disbelief i had when it first came on. “what is this music what is goin- IS THIS A SONG??” the pure, unadulterated joy i experienced from it. it may be cringe but it has set me free.
idk. i’m just glad to see all these characters back after the hiatus :D
the resplendent quetzal is!! so cool!! so pretty!! i’d love an episode just dedicated to it
saw someone say this already but common aviva W for inventing two creature power discs at once !! it’s her world we are simply all living in it
BLUE WHALES ARE AS BIG AS TWO BRONTOSAURUSES?? waow
i think ever since i’ve gotten past the age of. elementary school. martin’s nicknames for animals have been kind of hit-or-miss for me? (though it might just depend on who’s writing the script i dunno) but i liked kablooey!! (kabluey?) it’s a very cute name :D
zach remembered that he has hacker bots he can use (which are. arguably his best invention?? i’m pretty sure?? i get why they don’t use them every single time zach shows up bc that would get old quickly but it establishes that despite being a whiny man-child who couldn’t tell a walrus from a wombat or a wallaby, he can still be a threat to the wk team)
indri lemur my beloved 🫶🫶
and everyone’s been talking about that so um. let me throw my hat into the ring then.
i can see the intention behind trying to redeem paisley, but it just. doesn’t really match with what’s been established by her character?
the entire special hit me with subsequent punches of “wow this is a kid’s show and i am NOT the target demographic” when they were talking about the water cycle and explaining global warming. so it makes sense, in a sort of wish-fulfillment kind of way that they’d try and redeem the villain whose goal is arguably the most realistic out of the main four.
zach’s main gimmick is using wild animals for his own technology. donita uses wild animals for fashion. gourmand cooks and eats wild animals. yes, the latter two can and do happen in real life (not… really sure about zach’s but that’s not the point). but paisley’s gimmick was never about harming animals, but destroying the environment they live in, in order to build things for humans instead. she’s the kind of person who you’d most likely encounter in real life. redeeming paisley has nothing to do with her character (a businesswoman who finds nature “yucky” as seen in the spirit bear and Asian elephant episodes), instead her general gimmick. wouldn’t it be nice if we could get the people destroying animals’ homes to truly see how beautiful nature can be? so much so that they stop trying to destroy it and instead attempt to help preserve it?
(this is just a personal nitpick but paisley’s new design absolutely is NOT working for me srry)
after i watched the special i had some ideas abt how it potentially could have gone instead?:
don’t redeem paisley at all: again, i get the general idea of why they did this but also. it doesn’t?? line up with her character at all?? the way she was acting in the beginning was fine and perfectly in character for her. she just wants nature out of the way in order to complete her plans, and she has no time for zach being overly concerned with the wild kratts. you could argue that her knowing that dolphins and whales weren’t fish but mammals was foreshadowing to her redemption, but like… paisley’s not dumb?? donita has also corrected zach on not knowing his animals in the past so unless you’re also going to argue for a possible donita redemption in the future then. yeah. i dunno. the other villains didn’t need a redemption to make the special they were in interesting, i don’t see how this one should be any different.
another redemption fake-out, but do it much earlier in the story: i have. my own gripes about how the plot of this special went but we’ll save that for later. have paisley initially be dismissive of the wild kratts’s presence, but once she learns that the kratt brothers are arguing and that aviva, koki, and jimmy are spending all of their time trying to get them to make up, pounce on that opportunity. have her go all over-the-top (like she did in her canon redemption) and trick the wild kratts into thinking she’s turned good, only for her to turn on them in the second half. this might be too similar to “a creature christmas” though. this one would take up more of the plot if that’s any consolation?
give a hint to a paisley redemption arc, but don’t make her do a complete 180 right away: if they’re adamant on redeeming paisley (again, i see the general idea behind this gimmick-wise), then they could still do it and make it fit with her character. remember that paisley’s intentions are not to harm animals, but their environment (which is not any better, making that clear). she can still have her awed-by-coral moment, but maybe. tone it down?? she can have second thoughts about going with the plan, but have zach or rex* encourage her to continue. she steels her resolve, but remembers the coral, and hesitates. and the kratt brothers use that last-minute hesitation to defeat zach’s zachbots and paisley’s pavers. have paisley question why she couldn’t go through with it as she and zach leave madagascar. you could have aviva or one of the other wild kratts theorize that paisley has started to have a change of heart after seeing what nature is capable of, if left to thrive. but again: don’t redeem her right away. hint at it, and then explore it whenever she appears as the main antagonist in an episode of season 7.
*i’m admittedly not caught up on all of wk, but like. did paisley fire rex or something. WHERE WAS HE THIS ENTIRE SPECIAL??
as for the plot point of the kratt brothers fighting… yeah that definitely could have gone better.
(again, minor nitpick but jimmy saying that this was the first time he’s seen the brothers fight,, then implied that it happened every single laundry day,, but also he’s definitely seen them fight before? or had disagreements at least?? isn’t that the premise of at least two different episodes not counting this special. this script is also Not My Favorite. not sure how to explain it but some of the dialogue seems a little awkward?)
ik that the brothers get into danger 24/7 but i feel like. martin should be a little bit concerned that chris was getting squeezed to death by a green anaconda?? like you don’t have to make him overtly worried to the point of apologizing, but you could at least. make him look at chris with concern? i get that the point is that “oh no the brothers are fighting so they won’t help each other when one’s in danger” but. martin your brother is dying STOP SMILING NONCHALANTLY.
the resolution between the brothers was. kind of rushed? all it took was chris complimenting martin (“nice one, bro!”) and then activating some creature powers and then everything was fine. is. is that all it took?
if you liked it then that’s 100% fine !! i’m glad you enjoyed it :D it just wasn’t for me
just my personal preference but i think i would have preferred it if we spent more time with the brothers solo (martin at sea and chris in the rainforest) and have them come to their realizations that the planet needs both blues and greens to thrive separately. like martin sees the planktonic soup and acknowledges that the creatures who live in the ocean need a little green to survive. or chris sees how important rivers are in the amazon and remembers how the rivers will eventually flow into the ocean. and both of the brothers remember their adventures with each other (or aviva, koki, and jimmy remind them). they can still be stubborn and not forgive each other, but i’d like them to at least like. acknowledge each other’s pov and respect it.
or: do something with aviva trying to program two creature power suits at once (the brothers are both in madagascar at this point). like, what if there was a creature power suit malfunction where martin is a blue whale at first, but then turns into an indri. and chris starts our as an indri but then his suit malfunctions and he becomes a blue whale. the bros swap places, with martin going on land and chris going to sea, and then they realize that the other had a point - the land is home to so many wonderful creatures and so are the oceans. and how both are connected and make the earth their home. boom, reconciliation.
also another personal preference thing, i really wish they spent more time with kablooey/kabluey and mambiky (?). i’m here for cool creatures and i wanna see more of the cool creatures !! is that so much to ask for !!
also also. i think the indri-conda was born bc someone saw the pun potential and to that i say. no comment.
i still have. a lot of thoughts but i think i’ll just leave it there for now. ik i criticized it a lot but i did genuinely enjoy the special :D i’m happy to have the brothers back from hiatus and can’t wait to watch the other episodes !!

I HAVE MANY THOUGHTS ABOUT THE NEW WK SPECIAL
Spoilers beyond this point for Our Blue and Green World
1: It's really funny to see the bros have a "rivalry" again
2: The musical number made me laugh my ass off - these men can NYOT sing 💀
3: Martin gets partially vored by baby whale and Chris almost dies getting constricted by an anaconda (aka what else is new XD)
3: Whale Martin is very silly, Anaconda Chris is hot /hj
4: Indri Lemur Chris looks so goofy but in an endearing way
5: Another hybrid malfunction - Indriconda (cursed but ends up being kinda useful)
6: PAISLEY REDEEMED HERSELF??? I mean it makes sense, she always felt the least intentionally cruel of the villains but at the same time she's been the villain in so few episodes she barely got to do anything 😭 wonder if she's conning them until she can figure out how to truly "defeat" them... also rip to any Paisley x Donita team up wanters, it's too late for that 💀
Other than some gripes about the ending this was a solid episode to me! Full of merriment and splendor, two thumbs up and a lemur toethumb sideways
