Benefits of Using High Shear Mixers in Industrial Processes
In industrial processes, achieving uniform and high-quality products efficiently is paramount. High shear mixers have become indispensable tools across various industries due to their exceptional ability to enhance product consistency, reduce processing times, and improve overall mixing efficiency. This blog will explore the major benefits of high shear mixers and provide examples of industries that significantly benefit from their use.
Enhanced Product Consistency
One of the primary advantages of high shear mixers is their ability to produce consistently uniform products. These mixers operate by applying intense mechanical and hydraulic shear forces to the materials, breaking down particles and disseminating them evenly throughout the mixture. This results in a homogeneous product with fine, evenly distributed particles.
In the cosmetics industry, the consistency and texture of products like creams, lotions, and gels are critical. High shear mixers ensure that all ingredients, including active compounds, emulsifiers, and thickeners, are thoroughly blended to achieve a smooth, stable, and aesthetically pleasing final product. This uniformity is essential for consumer satisfaction and product efficacy.
Reduced Processing Times
High shear mixers are known for their ability to significantly cut down processing times. The intense shear forces they generate accelerate the breakdown and dispersion of materials, allowing for faster mixing and achieving the desired consistency in a shorter time frame compared to traditional mixers.
In the food and beverage industry, time is of the essence. High shear mixers are used to rapidly mix ingredients such as sauces, dressings, and dairy products. For instance, when making salad dressings, a high shear mixer can quickly emulsify oil and water-based ingredients, creating a stable and smooth emulsion in a fraction of the time required by conventional methods. This not only boosts production efficiency but also ensures the freshness and quality of the product.
Improved Mixing Efficiency
The design and operation of high shear mixers contribute to their superior mixing efficiency. These mixers are equipped with rotor-stator assemblies that create high-velocity gradients, promoting rapid mixing and ensuring that even the most challenging ingredients are thoroughly combined. The result is a product with enhanced properties and performance.
In the pharmaceutical industry, the precise and efficient mixing of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) with excipients is crucial for producing effective and safe medications. High shear mixers are used to blend powders and create uniform granules, ensuring that each dose of the medication contains the correct amount of API. This level of mixing efficiency is vital for maintaining the therapeutic efficacy and quality of pharmaceutical products.
Industries That Benefit from High Shear Mixers
Pharmaceuticals: High shear mixers are extensively used in the pharmaceutical industry for processes such as wet granulation, emulsification, and homogenization. They ensure uniform particle size distribution and consistent mixing of APIs with other ingredients, crucial for producing high-quality medications.
Food and Beverage: In the food and beverage industry, high shear mixers are employed to create smooth and stable emulsions, suspensions, and dispersions. They are used in the production of sauces, dressings, dairy products, beverages, and more, where consistency and texture are key to product success.
Cosmetics: The cosmetics industry relies on high shear mixers to achieve uniform texture and stability in products like creams, lotions, gels, and shampoos. These mixers ensure that all ingredients, including oils, water, and active compounds, are thoroughly blended, resulting in high-quality and effective cosmetic products.
Chemicals: High shear mixers are also used in the chemical industry for processes such as polymerization, emulsification, and dispersion. They help achieve uniform particle size distribution and consistent mixing of raw materials, leading to high-quality chemical products.
Conclusion
High shear mixers have revolutionized industrial mixing processes by offering enhanced product consistency, reduced processing times, and improved mixing efficiency. These advantages are particularly beneficial in industries such as pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, cosmetics, and chemicals, where product quality and process efficiency are critical. By incorporating high shear mixers into their operations, businesses can achieve superior product performance, streamline production processes, and maintain maximum standards of quality and consistency.

If you're wondering what we ARE going to do about all that poison ivy, and the general absolute shittiness of our fields, and for that matter what the fuck two people with no farming background and like...more than full-time work already are going to do with like sixteen acres of field anyway....we don't know.
Don't get me wrong, we have a lot of ideas. Most of which we either can't currently afford or for some other reason can't achieve. But some of which are lovely.
Rotational grazing, especially the high-density, frequently moved version sometimes known as "mob grazing", would eventually fix a lot of what's wrong with those fields. But not without way more animals than we have or even intend to have. We don't even have a "mob" TO graze. The sheep will eat some poison ivy, though it's not their favorite. They'll eat the leaves off the brambles, which is a pretty effective way to deplete the plant's stores and stunt it. They won't eat the Virginia Creeper.
But in a way, it doesn't matter, because we've spent nearly the entire last year moving the ewes through the smaller of the two fields, and they're only just getting back to where they started. In order to make a serious impact, they'd need to be grazing the same spot maybe every two months, depending on weather conditions. Not once a year. As I showed in a previous video, everywhere they go, they do visibly leave nitrogen, and we can actually see a slight improvement everywhere they've passed through. But it's not fast. And getting and caring for the...I don't know, fifty or so? sheep that would speed the process would make moving and caring for those sheep a full-time job neither of us has the capacity for. It's just not even an intention of ours. We've never really discussed a "cap", but I'd say that a "someday when we have real fencing and I'm healthy" number of sheep would still be twenty or thirty at the most.
The conventional, and arguable still best, way to fix the big field and its extreme fuckery would be to till and reseed. It would, believe it or not, still not eliminate all of the problem weeds, especially not the Virginia Creeper and Canada Thistle (which loves to grow back from root fragments and is resistant to normal herbicides). But it would be a huge start. We'd seed with a pasture mix that's full of plants that can handle being grazed down, and then mow where the sheep don't get to. I don't even know what it would cost to hire out all that work or rent the tools, but it's more than we have. It's like asking what it would cost to replace the siding on your house. I don't know, but I know I aint got it.
So for now, Jacob is spending a lot of hours just mowing. Mowing doesn't do as much as grazing, notably it doesn't leave nitrogen, but it does ensure that light is hitting the soil so that seeds there can sprout, and it does give the advantage to plants adapted for grazing (mainly grasses).
Eventually, the plan is to reforest several acres of the big field, using government programs. That also comes with the need to control understory growth for years until the trees mature enough to shade things out, but actually, help with that is part of some of the programs. They typically plant with a mix of natives--oak, tulip poplar, redbud...the mix varies based on what the contracted companies grew that year, apparently, but it's not really something you get to pick and choose. They come, they calculate their grid, they plant. But I don't think anything's to stop you coming through afterwards and planting your own selections in spots where saplings inevitably die. Pawpaw, white oak, American persimmon, hybrid chestnut... I dream of a day where we have maybe ten acres of forest, where I can harvest mushrooms and chestnuts, paw paws and berries and ginseng. Where the boy can bag us a wild turkey for holiday dinner or supplement the freezer with deer that got fat on fall acorns.
In my wildest fantasies (and, to be fair, what I have now was once my wildest fantasies!), the "small" field is an intercropped quilt of coppiced willow and locust, berry bushes, broad stripes of sorghum, amaranth, corn, and wheat for people and animals, strips of wildflower meadow to make corridors for animals and beneficial insects, and large patches of medicinal herbs and dye plants. The "north" field, the one that is so especially troubled now, is part forest, part pasture, with permanent perimeter fences, a loose scattering of trees that provide shade and fodder, and sheep being guided through the larger perimeter with portable electric mesh fencing.
So that's what we (very sarcastically) refer to as the "five year plan" here. But I'm trying to learn not to hamstring us with doubt and disbelief, so....that's the plan.

Since I'm talking about fortified wines and I have tried all 5 on bumwine.com, my thoughts on all of them, also ranked best to worst.
This got kinda long, so adding a cut so as not to spam everyone with my rambling.
1. MD 20/20
(Sorry for the lame joke. I found it on Etsy looking for a regular picture and it made me laugh so fuck you I'm using it.)
My favorite of the five. Sickly sweet and in bright fluorescent colors, you immediately know this isn't something you should ingest. As mentioned, Blue Raspberry is the most popular flavor among people I've talked to about MD 20/20. Other flavors are varying levels of good but none are so bad they're undrinkable. All of the flavors except Red Grape Wine are 13% alcohol (Red being 18%) which is lower than the other options but it also helps make them very drinkable. Also, for a depressing morning treat, mix Orange Jubilee MD with champagne. It's like a mimosa, but for when there's nothing to celebrate.
2. Cisco
So I have only had this once and only the strawberry flavor. Supposedly these were once pretty common but I've only found them at a single Valero outside of Richmond. He quit carrying it shortly after I found it also. (Really cool guy who ran it though. I had my IL license still in VA and he was from Chicago so we bullshitted for a bit and then he was also really friendly from then on. Also only place near me that carried Luckies.) But, this shit is delicious, maybe even better than Mad Dog. Also at 18%, it's a good bit stronger. The limited distribution is my main complaint here.
3. Thunderbird
Thunderbird is a white wine that comes in at 17.5%. Looking at the bottle, the sickly yellow color may turn you off from wanting to try it, but it actually tastes a lot better than it looks. Supposedly there was an old radio jingle that went "What's the word? / Thunderbird / How's it sold? / Good and cold / What's the jive? / Bird's alive / What's the price? / Thirty twice." which is pretty fun imo. This also comes in a large 50oz jug, which is really more Thunderbird than one person should probably ingest in their life, but is also a fun way to spend the night if you aren't concerned about your well-being. The American Classic.
4. Night Train Express
Basically just the red alternative to Thunderbird, it is also 17.5% alcohol but unlike T-Bird, this shit is mad gross. To be totally fair, I do prefer white wine to reds, but I do enjoy red wine as well. This is still drinkable, but it's easier if you already have a buzz going. I used to get one of each and drink the Thunderbird first and then the Night Train Express. Made it much more bearable.
5. Wild Irish Rose
Which brings us to the final wine, Wild Irish Rose. Bottled by the same company as Cisco, it is a crime that this shit is widely available and Cisco is not. Apparently there is a white and rosė flavor based on a google search I just made, but I've only ever seen Red and the absolute worst shit I've ever put in my mouth, Wild Fruit with Ginseng. The Red is 18% alcohol but is significantly worse than Night Train. And then there is Wild Fruit with Ginseng. Despite being a lower 14% alcohol, it tastes significantly more like an industrial solvent. It also made me feel sick for much longer than I would consider normal for cheap alcohol, still not fully well two days after. I am willing to ingest some gross shit for a buzz, cough syrup, cotton soaked in menthol and lavender, urine, just eating powder out of bags and nothing else even comes close to tasting as bad as this and it isn't even like a nice drunk. Fuck Wild Irish Rose. I bought the Wild Fruit one on my 21st birthday to drink and spent the next two days feeling like shit. Happy birthday to me.
Edit: While looking for an image to use I made the upsetting discovery they have yet another flavor now, Wild Grape. What an awful thing to stumble upon.
Honorable Mention: Real Sangria
This is not a fortified wine and is only listed as being 7-10% alcohol on the label, but it's cheap as shit, easy to drink and also the name is Real Sangria. C'mon, how can you not wanna get trashed on that? It fills all the same holes as the others do and you're friends/family may not be as concerned about your alcoholism compared with drinking Mad Dog or Thunderbird. Honestly this is nice enough I've even given it to other people and they actually were able to drink it.
So, those are my thoughts on cheap wine to get fucked up with. Idk why I bothered to type this all out, or why anyone else would possibly read this, but here u go. <3

How BTS and Its ARMY Could Change the Music Industry
By Rebecca Davis
It was just a year ago that BTS’ Love Yourself: Speak Yourself tour was selling out stadiums all over the world. Each night of the 20-date trek, which grossed $116 million, a total of nearly a million ticket buyers around the planet witnessed a thumping opening liturgy at the top of the K-pop band’s set in the form of the song “Dionysus.”
As flames shot up from the stage, seven figures emerged in supplicant white amid Greek columns and a long altar. Rapper RM (full name: Kim Nam-joon) led the way, twirling the staff of the titular mythical deity, as group mates Jin (Kim Seok-jin), SUGA (Min Yoon-gi), j-hope (Jung Ho-seok), Jimin (Park Ji-min), V (Kim Tae-hyung) and Jung Kook (Jeon Jung-kook) flanked him in a display of choreographed precision. The crowd, reaching peak pandemonium in a night full of deafening screams, made willing maenads and satyrs, transported by the band’s presence. An anthem about rebirth and self-discovery through the ecstatic collective experience of music was received as intended — as if from the gods.
Idol worship is by no means a new concept in pop music — remember John Lennon’s provocative statement in 1966 that the Beatles were “more popular than Jesus”? — but there’s something about BTS that turns fandom up to 11. The global brigade of BTS acolytes is collectively known by the acronym ARMY, short for Adorable Representative MC for Youth, a moniker chosen by Big Hit Entertainment, the company that launched the band. ARMY comprises the lion’s share of a Twitter audience that’s 29.2 million followers strong, more than triple that of any other K-pop group, and growing daily. BTS’ Instagram presence of 30.6 million followers (also rising rapidly), is trailed closely only by YG Entertainment’s Blackpink, at 29.3 million.
“It is because ARMY exists that we exist,” Jin says.
To understand the scope of BTS Inc.: An influential 2018 study by the Hyundai Research Institute estimated that the ripple effects from the boy band’s ecosystem contribute roughly $4.9 billion annually to South Korea’s GDP, on track to generate more value over 10 years than the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. The study gauged that in 2017, one in 13 visitors to the country came for BTS-related pilgrimages. That ratio may soon be growing. Spotify has reported a 300% spike in new listeners to the group since the Aug. 21 release of “Dynamite,” BTS’ first all-English single.
The BTS boom has also driven Big Hit to launch an IPO in October projected to raise some $811 million. (Each BTS member will be awarded shares worth approximately $8 million.) Of Big Hit’s revenue in 2019, 97.4% was generated by BTS, including $130 million worth of T-shirts, cosmetics, dolls and other merchandise.
The numbers are no accident. The South Korean government began investing strategically in the arts and the digital economy to help steer the country out of the 1997 Asian financial crisis. On the heels of “Parasite” sweeping the Oscars, the worldwide success of BTS may be another sign to the West that Seoul might be the center of a new force in creative production.
Big Hit, and the K-pop music business in general, have proved just how much a band, and a company, can prosper through a direct-to-consumer relationship, driven by digital platforms and dedicated apps with lots of behind-the-scenes content that keeps fans emotionally involved. It’s engagement on a scale that no Western artist has ever achieved, despite decades of radio promotion and the best retail strategy.
For the global music industry, the band’s success has meant a serious rethink of how a record company — in BTS’ case, Sony Music’s Columbia Records, which distributes the group’s music in the U.S. (though the band is not signed to the label) — builds and maintains a fan base. You could almost look at it as a collaborative arrangement: As music is being made in real time, decision-makers and strategists at Big Hit and Columbia are taking in and processing the comments and views of ARMY and pivoting accordingly.
“It creates a self-sustaining engine that, eventually, becomes hits perpetuating more hits,” says Neil Jacobson, a former president of Geffen Records who runs Hallwood, a talent agency for producers and songwriters. “A label wants that fan connection happening all the time so that they can consistently release and promote music. But in the past, there had always been intermediaries that labels had to talk to in order to manifest exposure. Now, there is a mechanism for an artist to speak directly to their fans. That didn’t exist before, and it has turbocharged the process.”
It’s all led to this “Dynamite” moment: The single has sold nearly 700,000 adjusted song units since its release — good for a gold record certification by the RIAA. The song is quickly becoming the band’s biggest radio hit to date (without a featured artist, it’s worth noting), and represents a significant breakout beyond its core audience. After that, will Grammys follow?
“They check all the boxes,” says Jenna Andrews, the vocal producer on “Dynamite” who also serves as an executive at Sony’s Records label. “I’ve never seen anything like BTS in terms of singing and dancing. This is just an indication of what’s yet to come. They’re going to take over the world.”
Kathryn Lofton, Yale University professor of religious and American studies and author of the book “Consuming Religion,” says that the bond BTS has with its ARMY is different from the typical singer-fan connection because “BTS’ driving commitment is to their relationship to the fan group, to the manufacturing of their communal joy for you to participate in.” It’s why she views BTS as “a religious project; they are seeking to make a togetherness that you can’t stop wanting to be a part of.”
Lofton also makes a point of distinguishing ARMY from the groupies associated with Beatlemania. Sure, BTS fans know the hagiography and backstory of each member, but everything about the band’s output prioritizes the collective over the individual.
The band itself has certainly leaned into the comparison with the Fab Four. For instance, it re-created the iconic moment of the Beatles’ 1964 debut at the Ed Sullivan Theater last May on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” — in a black-and-white segment that showed the K-pop band performing as mop tops in tailored suits.
But while John, Paul, George and Ringo had spotlight moments of their own, both within and outside the band — songs they wrote individually, causes they took up personally — with BTS, it’s all for one all the time. Unlike many other groups, the members share single, collective Twitter and Instagram accounts, and release even solo material through their shared channel. Accomplishments are never spoken of as belonging to any one group member but rather as the work of the team (and, of course, ARMY). In their videos, they often begin in solo shots but end up together.
This all strays from the typical tropes of Western boy bands including New Edition and ’N Sync, which have all proffered “star” frontmen. The thinking for decades had been that a record company would be lucky to have one breakout solo career among the bunch.
But BTS’ selfless approach didn’t happen randomly: The group was envisioned as a collective to heal the alienation that ails us in the digital age. Its name — “BTS” stands for Beyond the Scene — is an invitation to fans to join them offstage via almost daily video content featuring moments in their intimate if immaculately curated private lives on YouTube, Twitter and Big Hit app Weverse.
In 2011, Big Hit’s revenues from its then-main acts, Lim Jeong-hee and boy band 2AM, were plummeting. As the shadow of bankruptcy loomed, Bang Si-hyuk, now chairman, and Lenzo Yoon, global CEO, felt the company needed a total revamp. They stopped all normal work for months and called on employees to perform market research instead, seeking a new vision and formula.
Bang describes the conclusion they reached in a recent Harvard Business School case study of the firm written by Anita Elberse and Lizzy Woodham: “You would think that with the development of digital technology, people can come together more easily, but we found that it is actually more likely that people will feel more isolated. And so we need to find a way to help them, inspire them and heal them.”
Reflecting on the choice to develop a group that satiated this need, Yoon says in the study: “I think back then in 2011, with the conclusions we drew, we found the wild ginseng, as we say in Korea.”
On “Dynamite,” Big Hit worked with Columbia to further cultivate that ginseng. Pitched by Jacobson to label chairman Ron Perry, who guided and essentially A&R’d the song, worked to radio by Columbia executive VP and head of promotion Peter Gray (who has broken hits for Dua Lipa, Kelly Clarkson and Kings of Leon), and all overseen and informed by the years of management savvy of Big Hit, it’s the kind of artist development that was a music business calling card and that has lost its place in the fast-paced world of digital releases.
Radio exposure is not considered as impactful in Korea as it is in the U.S., notes RM, and so BTS — “maybe naively” — didn’t hit the ground in the U.S. thinking, ‘What can boost our airplay?’” the last time around. Still, RM notes that the band has “100% trust” in Columbia, Big Hit and the greater BTS community. “ARMY and the label are all trying their best,” he says, recounting how in the band’s early days, fans would send bouquets to radio DJs to get their songs on the air.
“Our goal is to try to show ourselves, expose ourselves to ARMY as much as possible,” adds Jin. “There are a lot of platforms now.”
In some ways, BTS’ ARMY has grown into its own force and brought the group along for the ride. In the world of K-pop, the expectation is that entertainers stay far away from politics, but as the genre has grown more global, it has begun to reach a transnational cohort to whom matters of social justice are top of mind.
When Variety broke the news on June 6 that BTS and Big Hit had donated $1 million to Black Lives Matter, BTS fans quickly flocked to #MatchAMillion through a link sent out by the fan charity Twitter account @OneInAnARMY. They hit the financial target in just 25 hours.
Erika Overton, a 40-year-old Georgia resident and one of the co-founders of the account, says of the experience: “It was one of the craziest nights I’ve ever seen. I was on Twitter all night. We were refreshing the page every couple of minutes, going, ‘Oh, my God …’” Witnessing ARMY’s U.S. battalion bring the message of Black Lives Matter to fans in other parts of the world who were unfamiliar with the movement was a “big educational moment that was really, really beautiful to see,” says Overton, who is African American.
What Overton saw was facilitated by networks of fan translators who also turn Big Hit’s Korean content into dozens of languages. Other ARMY groups provide counseling or tutoring services, invent themed recipes or write informational threads on everything from the history of the music industry and how charts work to Jungian philosophy, which deeply informs the BTS albums.
Some fan accounts have even become registered nonprofits, with dozens of administrators spread around the world putting in nearly full-time work on top of their day jobs.
In addition to Black Lives Matter, BTS this year donated $1 million to Crew Nation, a Live Nation campaign to support live entertainment personnel impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. And it has continued its campaign with UNICEF to end child violence. But the band members are reticent to take on the role of global activists. “I don’t consider ourselves as political,” says Suga. “We aren’t trying to send out some grandiose message. We would never see ARMY as a conduit for our voice or our opinion. ARMY speaks their own initiatives, and we always respect their opinions, as we respect any other person’s.”
RM, on the other hand, keeps the door open for a kind of apolitical politics based more on actions than words: “We are not political figures, but as they say, everything is political eventually. Even a pebble can be political.”
The scale of its influence is not something that the group takes lightly. “Our [‘Dynamite’] video has seen 80 million, almost 90 million views in just a day. In a way, that’s very weighty — and almost frightening,” RM told Variety the day after its debut, explaining that the balancing act is often one of how to juggle the burdens of being both role models and artists.
Some Korean scholars feel that BTS’ statement in support of BLM shows how ARMY is actually out ahead of Big Hit, spontaneously enacting its own initiatives to which the company must then respond. “Big Hit thinks they can create a company-dominated [approach to] fandom, but fans are agents doing only what they want, not what they don’t want,” says ethnomusicologist Kim Jungwon of Yonsei University in Seoul. For Kim, the fluidity of ARMY’s unplanned, collective responses “is the possible answer to BTS’ success.”
Candace Epps-Robertson, an ARMY member and assistant professor of rhetoric at the University of North Carolina, says the affirmational content of the group’s lyrics and videos may sound simple, but lay the groundwork for millions of fans to learn to engage critically with each other and develop a transcultural sense of global citizenship. “The message of ‘you, yourself, are enough, and you should love who you are and start with that — I think people miss how radical that can actually be,” she says. “We can’t overlook the power of that as an invitation to people to be part of this community.”
The Grammys, where BTS is eligible for record of the year, among other categories (nomination ballots for the 2021 awards, slated to air Jan. 31, went out on Sept. 28), provide a chance for the group to gain industry recognition as a mainstream contender, not just a K-pop act.
Asked why the Grammys matter so much to them, Suga seems to bristle a bit at the question. “I grew up watching American award shows, so obviously we all know and I know the importance of the Grammys,” he says. “It’s a dream anyone working in music has.”
RM says having the goal of a Grammy, an industry-voted award, “motivates us to work harder. As Suga said, if you are in music, the Grammy Awards are something that you cannot help but to look toward and set as an eventual goal.”
BTS’ global influence will soon collide with national duty, and a Grammy Award or three could help maintain its momentum. The band members all have to participate in Korea’s mandatory military service by the age of 28 — and four of them are within two years of that threshold. “Big Hit really wants to target the Grammys before [the members] go into the army,” says an industry source privy to the company’s marketing plans, adding that, from Big Hit’s perspective, it would be best for business if the boys all perform their service at the same time.
The group renewed its contract with Big Hit in 2018, which commits the members to another seven years with the firm, but the army service issue could knock off two years within that time span. A company statement ahead of Big Hit’s IPO shows that Jin, the oldest group member (he’ll be 28 in December), must conscript by 2022 even if he gets an extension of the draft deadline. The statement discloses that plans to prerecord content to be released over the course of any army tenure are being discussed.
South Korea officially changed its rules in July to allow draftees access to once-banned cellphones on weeknights and weekends, meaning BTS could theoretically continue some interaction with fans. However, the taking of photos, video or audio recordings remains prohibited. (Historically, most Korean celebs have fallen silent during their service.)
Soldiering aside, with the push from Big Hit’s IPO, multiple TV appearances — including an ongoing weeklong takeover of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” — the chart success of “Dynamite” and growing Grammy buzz, BTS is poised to make some serious noise this fall, which is saying a lot for a group known to shake the decibel scale with a wave or a wink. But perhaps the most significant measure of its ascent is underscored by the frequent speculation of the band’s place in a new moment for the music industry.
“What would it mean not just to include the sound of Korea in the annals of world music, but to actually propose that the South Korean sound is the next chapter?” posits Yale’s Lofton. “What if BTS are actually the next Beatles?”

Anti Aging Herbs Will Help You Remain Youthful
Anti-aging herbs are those herbs that are used to slow down the aging process. Aging skin is known as the degenerative natural process which our skin undergoes as our age advances. Anti-aging herbs help in stimulating blood circulation and in enhancing the ability of the body to remove wastes and absorb nutrients.
Herbs are natural and harmless. Herbal treatments are usually in demand as they have lower side effects and are less expensive. Herbs that possess the property of anti-aging are used in varying forms like medicine, oil, soap bars, ointments, cream, and gel. There are many cosmetic companies, health spas, and beauty therapists which use herbs as an active anti-aging component in their products. Youthful vigor can be maintained through anti-aging herbs.
Anti-aging herbs are considered by many to be better and safer, as compared to surgery, Botox injections, or any other cosmetic procedures. In addition, several natural herbs have the quality of lifting spirits and mind strengthening. They help in preventing stress on the body and mind.
Anti-aging herbs further have a deep impact on the skin. Some of the commonly used anti-aging herbs are:
* Lycium fruit
* Rhodiola Rosea
* Schizandra fruit
* Reishi mushroom
* Gynostemma pentaphyllum
* Polygonum root
* Cordyceps mushroom
* Wild American ginseng
* Ashwagandha
* Wild asparagus root
* Grape seed extract
* Siberian ginseng
* Nopal cactus
* Jujube Fruit
* Konjac mannan
* Wild Chinese ginseng
* Gymnema Sylvestre
The action of these anti-aging herbs is to slow down the aging process, arrest the wrinkling of the skin, remove toxins from the liver, accelerate the production of superoxide dismutase, stimulate the immune system, etc. Superoxide dismutase is the most vital natural antioxidant of the body which considerably slows down aging.
Some of these anti-aging herbs can prove to be harmful, depending on the dose taken and the health of an individual. Overdosing can lead to serious or negative side effects. Just a few of the common side effects, produced by herbal treatments, may be headaches, nervousness, agitation, lack of sleep, diarrhea, irregular heartbeat, skin rash, or unusual vaginal bleeding in women. Most of the herbs should be avoided by women when pregnant and during breastfeeding.
Some food substances or other herbal medicines can interact with the action of these anti-aging herbs. At times, when anti-aging herbs are combined with other herbs they can lead to allergies and reactions. Occasionally, alcohol when mixed with herbs may lead to allergy, irritation, or discomfort.
The anti-aging herbs should be gradually introduced into your routine. Initially, one herb, in small quantity should be introduced at a time. Adequate time should be given to the herb to work before deciding to increase the quantity that you are using. Anti-aging herbs can help reduce the speed of the aging process in human bodies. Turn to anti-aging herbs to remain youthful.
Anti-aging herbs can offer numerous benefits to health as age advances, provided they are used with care and caution.

Book Synopsis:
In the eyes of many people, the practices of forestry and farming are mutually exclusive, because in the modern world, agriculture involves open fields, straight rows, and machinery to grow crops, while forests are primarily reserved for timber and firewood harvesting. Farming the Woods invites a remarkably different perspective: that a healthy forest can be maintained while growing a wide range of food, medicinal, and other non-timber products. While this concept of 'forest farming' may seem like an obscure practice, history indicates that much of humanity lived and sustained itself from tree-based systems in the past; only recently have people traded the forest for the field. The good news is that this is not an either-or scenario; forest farms can be most productive in places where the plow is not: on steep slopes, and in shallow soils. It is an invaluable practice to integrate into any farm or homestead, especially as the need for unique value-added products and supplemental income becomes more and more important for farmers.Many already know that daily indulgences we take for granted such as coffee, chocolate, and many tropical fruits, all originate in forest ecosystems. But few know that such abundance is also available in the cool temperate forests of North America. Farming the Woods is the first in-depth guide for farmers and gardeners who have access to an established woodland and are looking for productive ways to manage it. Authors Ken Mudge and Steve Gabriel describe this process as 'productive conservation,' guided by the processes and relationships found in natural forest ecosystems.Farming the Woods covers in detail how to cultivate, harvest, and market high-value non-timber forest crops such as American ginseng, shiitake mushrooms, ramps (wild leeks), maple syrup, fruit and nut trees, ornamental ferns, and more. Comprehensive information is also offered on historical perspectives of forest farming; mimicking the forest in a changing climate; cultivation of medicinal crops; creating a forest nursery; harvesting and utilizing wood products; the role of animals in the forest farm; and how to design and manage your forest farm once it's set up. This book is a must-read for farmers and gardeners interested in incorporating aspects of agroforestry, permaculture, forest gardening, and sustainable woodlot management into the concept of a whole-farm organism.

Businessman Arthur Lowe turns 100: Says secret to long life is ginseng
Arthur Lowe and his son, Arthur Jr., at Lowe Fur and Herb.
By JERRY LANKFORD
Record Editor
Well known Wilkes entrepreneur and businessman Arthur Lowe says he has had a good life.
All 100 years of it.
Lowe turned the century mark on Monday – he was born March 18, 1919.
He is best known for his decades of owning and operating Lowe Fur and Herb Co., located at 108 5th St; North Wilkesboro. Having retired from the business a few years ago, it’s now managed by his son, Arthur, Jr., and mostly deals in scrap metals.
“We do a tremendous business in scrap metal,” Lowe said, although the fur trade has faded and the herb side of the business, “…is all but dead. I still go by there. My son is doing pretty good. He’ll make it.”
Lowe was born near Moravian Falls to Wilkes native Carl Arthur Lowe and Velona Stamey Lowe from Galax, Va. The family owned a peach orchard. When he was a small boy, the Lowes moved to Wilkesboro. It was in town that he learned about running a business.
As a young man, Lowe worked with his father, who ran a wholesale company in North Wilkesboro. The elder Lowe also traded in animal furs and wild herbs. That’s where Arthur was educated in what became his life’s work.
He said that one of his earliest memories was going to a place that had “piles of fur.”
Referring to the fur and herb business, Lowe commented, “It wasn’t something you could learn in any school. I guess I went to my father’s school,” he said with a laugh. “I learned about that from him in the 20’s and 30’s.”
A 1936 graduate of Wilkesboro High School, Lowe attended UNC-Chapel Hill and earned a bachelors degree in economics, graduating from the university in 1940. He returned to work full-time with his father. The wholesale side of the business sold commodities like flour, sugar and cigarettes to stores in Wilkes and surrounding counties.
The Lowe family also sold scrap metal throughout both world wars. The business received special commendations for its efforts.
During WWII, Lowe served in the U.S. Army in a mortar crew in the Pacific Theater. “We fought right alongside the Marines,” he said. He received a Purple Heart from a shrapnel wound he received to his leg during combat at Okinawa.
“They just bandaged me up and sent me back out,” he said, adding, “I saw the last 65 soldiers surrender in World War II. We didn’t know it at the time. That was right before they dropped the atomic bomb.”
Lowe and his brother, Elmer, eventually went in business together, but split in 1946, after returning home from the Army. Lowe had acquired the property where the company continues to operate today.
He was one of the “big buyers” of ginseng.
“I remember in 1976 bought we 20,000 pounds of North American ginseng and sold it to the Chinese,” Lowe said. “We bought it from all over America. We still buy it but not in as big a quantity as then. Now people can’t cross state lines (to sell the herb). It grows a lot in the Brushy Mountains, wild, raw ginseng.”
As for the fur trade, Lowe said. “There’s no demand for it now because of sanctions and faux fur. We used to have 10 people just working in furs. We sold to manufacturers in New York, Canada and Germany.”
The company traded in a large variety of animal furs.
“I sold 100,000 muskrat furs at one time to a man from England,” Lowe said. “I’ve probably sold a million raccoon furs. We sold otter, beaver, possum…I sold 10,000 possum furs at one time to a man. We also sold wild mink furs.” He explained that wild mink furs have a dark brown color unlike farm-raised minks. “I sold 20,000 wild mink furs one year.”
Lowe’s hobbies now are “fooling with old Ford cars.” He owns 10, from a 1936 model up into the 1950’s.
As for his personal life, Lowe married Elizabeth Neel in 1940. “She’s one of the prettiest gals that ever grew up in Wilkes County and still is.”
They had three children, Elizabeth, now deceased — named after her mother — Arthur, Jr. and Rebecca Lowe Whicker, wife of Dr. James Whicker, who was head of Raleigh Ear Nose and Throat Clinic.
He and his wife, Elizabeth, who is now 97, still live at home in Wilkesboro.
When asked the secret of his long life, Lowe was quick to answer: “Ginseng. The Chinese people swear by it.”
He said he soaks the root in vodka for several weeks until it the liquid turns a brownish color, and takes a spoonful each day. As for his wife, “She hasn’t taken it like me, but has taken it some. It does give you energy. I feel pretty good. I can still walk with a walker. She (his wife) does the same.”
Looking back over the century, Lowe said, “I’ve had an interesting life. I’ve had a great life and a great business.”

Herbs that help with Migraines
To protect against problems when offering or even using herbs:
Be actually particular you have the right plant.Use simples.Understand that different prep work of the very same herb can work differently.Use nourishing, tonifying, inducing, and also potentially poisonous weeds wisely.BE CERTAIN YOU HAVE THE CORRECT PLANT Among the easiest ways to enter into trouble with an weed is actually to use the "incorrect"one. How could that happen?
Typical labels for weeds overlap, inducing confusion concerning the suitable identity. Cannabis that are actually classified appropriately might consist of extraneous component from one more, much more unsafe, natural herb.
Herbs might be noshed the wrong phase of growth or took care of incorrectly after gathering, inducing all of them to create harmful qualities.Protect on your own and also your consumers with these easy actions: Buy herbs simply from professional suppliers.Only buy natural herbs that are designated along with their herb title. Herb names are specific, but the same usual titles can refer to numerous different vegetations.
"Marigold "could be Calendula officinalis, a medical natural herb, or even Tagetes, an annual used as a bedding plant.If you expand the cannabis you sell, be careful regarding keeping different vegetations different when you produce as well as dry them, as well as uncontrollable concerning labeling.USE SIMPLES A straightforward is actually one weed.
For optimum safety, I ready, buy, market, educate about as well as use natural simples, that is actually: plannings having just one natural herb. (Occasionally I will add some mint to flavor a solution. )The additional herbs there are in a formula, the even more probability there is of unnecessary side-effects. Not surprisingly, everyone finds combos, intending to get even more for a lot less.
And many wrongly feel that natural herbs have to be used all together to become successful( probably due to the fact that possibly harmful herbs are actually often integrated along with defensive natural herbs to minimize the damages they cause ). But incorporating herbs with the very same properties, including goldenseal and also echinacea, is actually counter-productive and most likely to cause trouble than an easy.
A basic cast of echinacea is a lot more efficient than any kind of combination as well as a lot safer.Different people have different reactions to elements, whether medications, meals, or even cannabis. When natural herbs are actually joined all together in a formula as well as someone taking it has traumatic negative effects, there is actually no way to find out which herb is the source. Along with simples, it is actually easy to tell which herb is actually doing what.
If there is actually a negative reaction, various other weeds with comparable properties may be tried. Restricting the amount of herbs used in any kind of one day (to no more than 4 )supplies incorporated protection.
Side impacts from herbs are less typical than negative effects coming from drugs as well as normally less severe. If an herb disrupts the food digestion, it may be actually that the physical body is learning to refine it. Provide it a couple of more makes an effort before losing hope. Quit taking any weed that causes nausea, vertigo, pointy tummy discomforts
, diarrhea, problem, or even tarnished sight.(These results will typically develop very quickly. )Treacherous elm is actually a great remedy to any type of form of poison.If you are allergic to any kind of meals or even medicines, it is particularly essential to get in touch with information that list the negative effects of herbs before you use them.UNDERSTAND THAT DIFFERENT PREPARATIONS OF THE SAME HERB CAN WORK DIFFERENTLY The protection of any herbal treatment hinges on the way it is actually equipped as well as used.Tinctures as well as essences include the alkaloids, or
dangerous, parts of plants and also need to become used along with care as well as knowledge. Casts are as risk-free as the herb involved (view warns below for tonifying, boosting, sedating, or even potentially poisonous natural herbs). Best used/sold as simples, not combinations, especially when tough cannabis are being used.Dried cannabis created in to teas or even mixtures include the nourishing elements of the vegetations and also are usually very secure, especially when nourishing or even tonifying cannabis are used.Dried herbs in capsules are generally the least effective way to use herbs.
They are actually inadequately digested, improperly used, frequently worn-out or even useless, and also pretty expensive.Infused natural oils are actually offered as is, or even expanded in to lotions. They are actually much more secure than necessary oils, which are actually extremely strong as well as could be lethal if taken internally.
Herbal white vinegars are actually not simply decorative but mineral-rich too. A good medium for beneficial and also tonifying weeds; not as tough as tinctures for stimulants/sedatives.
Natural glycerins are actually readily available for those who prefer to stay clear of alcohol but are actually generally weaker in action than tinctures.USE NOURISHING, TONIFYING, STIMULATING, & POTENTIALLY
POISONOUS HERBS WISELY Weeds make up a group of numerous many thousand plants with largely differing actions. Some are nourishers, some tonifiers, some energizers and sedatives, and some are possible toxins.
To use them carefully and also effectively, our team need to understand each type, its own usages, best fashion of preparation, and usual dose range.Nourishing cannabis are actually the best of all natural herbs; side effects are actually rare.
Nourishing weeds are enjoyed any amount for any kind of span of time. They are actually used as meals, similar to spinach and also cabbage.
Nurturing natural herbs offer higher amounts of proteins, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, carotenes
, and also important fatty acids.Examples of beneficial natural herbs are: alfalfa, amaranth, astragalus, calendula flowers, chickweed, comfrey leaves behind, dandelion, fenugreek, flax seeds, honeysuckle florals, lamb's one-fourth, marshmallow, nettles, oatstraw, plantain( leaves/seeds ), purslane, reddish clover blooms
algae, Siberian ginseng, slippery elm, violet leaves behind, and also wild mushrooms.Tonifying weeds behave little by little in the body system as well as have a cumulative, rather than instant, result. They construct the operational capacity of a body organ(like the liver )or even a device(like the immune system). Tonifying cannabis are actually most favorable when they are actually used in tiny quantities for prolongedperiods of time.
The more bitter the tonic tastes, the less you need to take. Bland conditioners may be actually used wholesale, like nourishing herbs.Side results occasionally attend tonics, but are generally rather temporary. Many older herbalists wrongly corresponded inducing weeds along with tonifying herbs, triggering wide-spread abuse of many herbs, and also severe edge effects.Examples of tonifying natural herbs
are: barberry skin, burdock root/seeds, chaste plant, crone( mug) wort, dandelion root, echinacea, elecampane, fennel, garlic, ginkgo, ginseng, ground ivy, hawthorn berries, horsetail, lady's wrap, lemon ointment, milk thistle seeds, motherwort, mullein, pau d'arco, raspberry leaves behind, schisandra berries, St. Joan's wort, turmeric origin, usnea, crazy yam, and yellowish dock.Sedating and stimulating cannabis cause a selection of fast reactions,
several of which might be actually unwanted. Some aspect of the person may be pressured in order to help other components. Sturdy barbiturates as well as energizers, whether herbs or drugs, press our team outside our typical series of activity and might trigger solid negative effects. If our company rely on all of them and afterwards try to work without them, our experts end up more agitated (or even depressed)than before our experts started. Habitual use powerful sedatives and also stimulants- whether opium, rhubarb origin, cayenne, or coffee- triggers reduction of mood, issue of performing, and also bodily dependence. The more powerful the herb, the more moderate the dosage requires to be, as well as the briefer the duration of
its use.Herbs that tonify as well as nourish while sedating/stimulating are some of my preferred herbs. I use all of them openly, as they do not lead to dependency. Sedating/stimulating herbs that also tonify or nourish: boneset, catnip, citrus peeling, cleavers, ginger root, hops, lavender, marjoram, motherwort, oatstraw, passion bloom, pepper mint, rosemary, sage, skullcap.Strongly sedating/stimulating herbs feature: angelica, dark pepper, honored thistle root, cayenne pepper, cinnamon, cloves, coffee, licorice, opium poppy, osha origin, guard's bag, wonderful woodruff, chicken rhubarb origin, uva ursu leaves behind, valerian origin, wild lettuce drain, willow skin, as well as wintergreen leaves.Potentially poisonous herbs are extreme, effective medicines that are actually enjoyed tiny quantities and simply for as
lengthy as needed to have. Negative effects are common.Examples of possibly dangerous herbs are: belladonna, blood-root, celandine, chaparral, foxglove, goldenseal, henbane, iris origin, Jimson weed, lobelia, May apple( American mandrake ), mistletoe, stab origin, poison hemlock, stillingia origin, turkey corn origin, wild cucumber root.In enhancement, look at these thought and feelings on using cannabis properly: Respect the energy of vegetations to alter the body and sense in impressive ways.Increase trust in the recovery effectiveness of vegetations through trying remedies for small or exterior complications before, or while, teaming up with primary and also interior problems.Develop ongoing partnerships with competent therapists-personally or in publications
-that want plant based medicine.Honor the originality of every vegetation, everyone, every situation.Remember that everyone comes to be entire and also healed in their own one-of-a-kind way, at their
very own velocity. People, plants, and creatures can help in this particular procedure. But it is actually the body/spirit that does the recovery. Do not anticipate vegetations to become cure alls of.

Seed Catalogue Review of the Year; 9th Annual!
It's garden planning and seed buying season, and I'm reviewing the catalogues for the 9th time! Time really does fly when you are having fun. The closure of The Cottage Gardener contributes to my sense that there's a little pulling back and trimming the excess going on this year, with fewer things being listed as new. Still, there is lots of fabulous stuff out there, new and old. Trends - I do see include an awful lot of people listing Garden and French sorrels (YAY GET SOME!). Ground cherries including Golden Berry continue to gather some speed. There are a number of (mostly mustard) greens advertised as having wasabi-like flavours. Purple amaranth is very "in"; purple and "odd" coloured vegetables in general, I would say. I'm seeing a lot of new varieties of lettuce. As ever, don't forget to check Seeds of Diversity's Seed Catalogue Index if you are looking for something specific (and, in fact, if you are just browsing too). A'Bunadh Seeds: Situated an hour from Edmonton, they supply seeds for short (zone 2a) Alberta seasons; 90 to 110 days. They have a surprisingly large and unusual collection! I like the looks of Pisarecka Zlutoluske yellow bean, Osgoode rutabaga, Feuer Kugel beets, and plenty of carrots. Lots of peas including Bill Jump, Hungarian Shelling, Mr Big, Top Pod, Knight, and more. An amazing selection of corn - I was going to say for so far north, but really, for anywhere - and numerous squash too, including locally adapted Lower Salmon River and Cindy Souper. In addition to vegetable seeds they have some perennial fruit seeds, including Nanking cherry and Evans cherry. They have a large selection of rare potatoes, but they are not seed grade. Garlic, comfrey, and six kinds of Jerusalem artichokes all sold for spring planting. AgroHaitai: The only Canadian source I know of for mostly Asian vegetables; they have a good reputation but most of their offerings are F1 hybrids. Interesting things I see include Yellow Stem Chinese celery, Dynasty Pak Choy (as little as 20 days to maturity!), Indian Mini bitter gourd (f1), Zou Sing luffa (f1, but they say not day-length sensitive), Black Champion eggplant, and You Fong Wong yardlong bean. Annapolis Seeds: Now up to 600 varieties, all of which they grow or contract themselves. New things for this year include Scarlet Frills mustard (really gorgeous!), Little Leaf pickling cucumber (hard to find and recommended), Rainbow Lacinato kale, a mix of Sea Buckthorn seeds probably best suited to breeders, Black Beauty tomato, Lower Salmon River squash, Shosaku gobo (burdock), Japanese White eggplant, and Midnight Lightning zucchini. Lebanese Metki cucumber is actually a melon, but used as a cucumber. Burt's Greenhouses: Mostly a nursery with ornamentals, Burt's also sells a good range of sweet potato slips. We got our Toka Toka Gold, Owairaka, and Purple sweet potatoes from them. They also have Cuban, Georgia Jet, and Tainung 65. Seems like a smaller selection than last year, but still good prices and the ability to buy in volume. The Cottage Gardener: I was sad to discover that this excellent source of seeds is no more. They posted on Facebook:
"We are closing our (virtual) doors.
After much thought, many discussions and with definitely mixed feelings, we have made the difficult decision to close down The Cottage Gardener retail business. Our site will stop taking orders on September 14th, 2018. We remain absolutely passionate and committed to preserving rare and endangered heirloom seeds, but after 22 years of the daily grind of running a retail business we are ready to explore new ways of pursuing this. Passing on our seed saving knowledge will be an integral part of our future plans. Many of our customers have been with us through our whole journey, while others have just recently discovered us - we thank all of you for your support in helping us do our bit to save genetic biodiversity. We'll let you know our future plans as they unfold - we may even pop up at a seed show or two :). " Eagle Creek Seed Potatoes: For once I am not even going to mention varieties. Shipping costs for potatoes are brutal, but if you want to grow unusual seed potatoes, this is THE place to look and such is life. There is a very impressive selection and 6 mixed packages for the indecisive. Reliable and recommended. Many of our favourite potatoes first came from Eagle Creek. Edible Antiques: Grown in Prince Edward county. Right off bat I see several classic native varieties being offered; Algonquin pumpkins, and Skunk and Deseronto Potato beans. Also Aladdin's Lamp cherry tomatoes, Liebenspfel and Lively Sweet Italian Orange peppers, and Eagle Pass okra. Greta's Organic Gardens: This Ottawa seed-house has numerous interesting and unusual varieties. New this year are the lovely Red Savonese onion, Red Welsh bunching onion, Turnip Rooted chervil, Dishpan Cusha squash, Datterino tomato - combining compactness with indeterminacy, a hard combo to find - Everona tomatillo, and Stavros Greek pepper. There is an impressive number of tobacco varieties, if that's your bag. A large and very good selection overall. A good selection of watermelons includes Bozeman and Early Canada (which did very well for us when we grew it). Greta has an impressive array of unusual eggplants and 6 kinds of okra. Harmonic Herbs: They specialize in medicinal herbs, and also have a small collection of grains and flowers. Being another Alberta company they have short season vegetables including their own earliest Norwesterlee tomato, Blush tomato, Purple Peacock broccoli, Broccoli Raab (rapini), and Palla Rossa radicchio, Hawthorn Farm: Catalogue looks bigger and better than ever. I notice they now have a lot of seeds in bulk, so market gardeners and farmers take note. Sweet Reba acorn and Honeynut butternut squashes are Cornell releases. If you want to play around though, try the Lofthouse Landrace moschata squash. There are loads of tomatoes and lettuces. Best selection of zucchini around, including tried and true for us Tatume, Dark Green, Mutabile, and Ronde de Nice. Success PMR Straightneck looks like it might make a good substitute for the maddeningly unproductive Golden. Misato Rose winter radish looks lovely, as does Jing Orange okra. Get some Sorrel for wonderful spring greens. Only source I know for Iowne's True Blue, a local heritage corn. Glass Gem on the other hand is a wildly popular new (OP) variety and they have that too. I want to try April Green cabbage, so called for excellent storage properties. Chieftan is a long-time favourite Savoy. Heritage Harvest Seed: A great selection of heirloom seeds, grown in Manitoba. If they can make it there, they can make it here! I have found a number of our best varieties here, including Gnadenfeld melon, January King cabbage, and a lot of our favourite peas. There are stupendous numbers of beans of every type here, including Auntie Wilder, Bis (Polish), Chevrier Verte, Drew's Dandy, Fort Portal Jade, and Ice (Crystal White Wax). I could go on and on, so I will just note they have large selections of beets, carrots, corn, cucumbers, grains, lettuce, melons, squash... they are the only Canadian source I know of for the rare and picky to grow but really delicious Amish Bottle onion. Hope Seeds: This Nova Scotian company specializes in east-coast heirlooms including Marie Dugas Canadian Wild Goose, Goose Gullet, and Caribee beans; Ashworth corn; and Joan rutabaga. They have a good selection of Jerusalem artichokes and potatoes - Onaway, Bridget and Fianna are new names to me and sound quite interesting. They do have a few varieties of garlic available for spring planting, if you failed to get yours in during the fall. Ferme Tournesol: Not yet updated for 2019. Not just seed producers, but vegetable breeders as well. Their own seeds include Arc-en-ciel tatsoi, Big Fat Jalapeño pepper, Winter Green brassica mix, and Carrot Bomb hot pepper. You can get Mosaic Mix beans, which is a mixture of all their breeding lines of bush beans - sounds like a lot of fun. They have their own landrace cucumber, as well as Dragon Egg Croatian cucumber. Sugar Magnolia snap pea and Early Moonbeam watermelon can be hard to find. Ho Chi Minh yellow cayenne, Georgia Flame, and Gord's Cherry Bomb, and Lemon Drop are some other unusual hot peppers they list. Jardins de l'Écoumène: Site is in French. New offerings (nouveautés) include Brad's Atomic cherry tomato, Gogosar Bulgarian pepper, Agate edemame (soybean), concombre d'Antilles (West Indian gherkin), Tam Jalapeño and Thai hot peppers, and the oddly-named but tasty sounding Vegetarian hot peppers, also from the French Caribbean. They also have Toraji balloon flower, which most North Americans do not realize is a vegetable in addition to being a lovely garden perennial. At the moment there are a number of tomatoes, as well as Belle Isle cress and Iroquois White corn on sale at less than half price. Mapple Farm: As ever, this is one of the few places to find sweet potato slips, and they have a good selection including best northern grower Georgia Jet, and the popular Beauregard. New (at least to my notice) are White Travis and Superior. Ginseng Red is recommended for French frying. They are, so far as I know, the only source of Ken Allen's book on growing sweet potatoes in the north, and if you want to have any success at growing them, the $25 is well worth spending. They have a small collection of other carefully chosen items including Chinese Artichokes (crosnes; stachys affinis). Squash are a specialty, including Fisher's acorn (unique to them), Golden Hubbard, Honey Boat delicata, and the superb Gill's Golden Pippin acorn. Latah tomato and Parade cucumber are ideal for cooler climates. Sweet Orange II tomato is noted as new, but their Mystery Keeper tomato is tried and true. Matchbox Garden Seed Co: Another Ontario company growing most of their own seed! Selection is not huge, and leans more to the best standards than the rare and exotic. Varieties are not marked as new so I will just mention a few that look good to me. Trionfo Violetto is an excellent purple pole bean. Long Purple Italian eggplant is a bit unusual. Astro arugula is recommended, Tadorna leeks look lovely. There are just 3 beets, but the best varieties in 3 colours. Baquieu and Gold Rush lettuces look promising. I haven't seen Capriglio Red and Capriglio Yellow peppers anywhere else. Naramata Seed Company: Items not marked as new. Still, some eye-catching listings including Borlotto Lamon bean, Grampa Brown's Indian popcorn, Sand Mountain sorghum, Tante Alice cucumber, Wasabina mustard, and Baladi romaine lettuce from Syria. May Queen is a favourite lettuce for us. They have the excellent and hard-to-find Small Shining Light and Sweet Siberian watermelons. Many interesting hot peppers including a white Bolivian, Aribibi Gusano. Greek Sweet Red moschata squash sounds very intriguing. San Juanito tomatillo looks promising. Lots of tomatoes in every size and colour. Norton Naturals: Not a seed company; they sell a selection of roots, mostly native but also crosnes, edible daylilies, and double Tiger lilies. Native plants include: Arrowhead, Camas (Quamash), Groundnuts, Hog Peanuts, 3 different Jerusalem artichokes, Spring Beauty, Meadow Garlic, and Ramps (Wild Leeks). In my experience, if you do not have the necessary fungus in the soil those last will not grow. Worth trying if you have a typical Ontario woodlot though. They sell Prairie Turnip as seeds - this is actually a tap-rooted legume, and it looks like it would also make an excellent ornamental. This was out of stock last year but this year they have it. They ship twice a year - next up in April. OSC (Ontario Seed Company): A good source for open-pollinated classics at reasonable prices but most of their new offerings lean towards F1 hybrids. I'm noting that in particular most of their corn is treated, as far as I can tell with the notorious bee-killing neonicotinoids, so DO NOT GROW. (If you are a large enough grower you can request untreated seed.) All other seeds are not treated. They do not always identify F1 hybrids so do some research before you order. New this year is "OSC Seeds International line" - some of them varieties they've had for a while, but a more cosmopolitan group than their usual. It includes Red Garnett amaranth, Wild Roquette, German Lutz beet, Green Punjab eggplant, Osaka Purple mustard, Early Purple Sprouting broccoli, Red Fire orach, and Fire Candle radish. Potager Ornemental de Catherine: Site is in French. New offerings include Thai Lavender Frog Egg (!) eggplant, Kikuza moschata squash (cute!), Golden Child and Monte Gusto yellow wax beans, Oda pepper, Malaga (purple!) radish, and Allu Jola popping sorghum. In short, a place with some very unusual and exciting varieties. Prairie Garden Seeds: The site is updated for 2019, but the new offerings aren't labelled as such and this list doesn't change a lot from year to year. However, they are the go-to source for many Canadian heirloom vegetables, and are particularly strong in tomatoes and beans, but also in grains - if you want small amounts of many historic Canadian wheats, or indeed all kinds of grains from all over the world, check here. If you want open-pollinated, untreated corn this is probably the place. Prices are very reasonable and amounts generous, but you cannot order online - you must send them an order form and a cheque. It's been well worth the trouble in my experience. I can't pick out varieties to mention - they have 133 kinds of beans, 42 different peas - a good list of peas is hard to find - 45 other pulses and legumes, and then there's everything else - lots of it - Jim specialized in Canadian-bred tomatoes for instance. Richter's Herbs: says the herb of the year is agastache, which is actually a species of plant with numerous varieties in cultivation.As ever, they have the largest and most complete list of herbs I have seen anywhere. Seeds abound but they also have many things available as plants, including a whole lot of hops, 4 kinds of sea buckthorn, 16 types of garlic (not shipped until fall but order early, they say), and 10 kinds of figs. Not an edible in spite of the name, but I see they have Chocolate Cosmos seeds (at $10 per packet! Not cheap, but his used to be only available as a very hard-to-find clone and seeds will be rare for a while yet). I'm always banging on about Sorrel in the spring; grow your own Blonde de Lyon garden sorrel. In the realm of vegetable seeds: they have Sweet Purple and Jersey Giant asparagus; Hopi Blue, True Gold, and Spectrum Red Husk corn; the somewhat hard-to-find but excellent Muncher cucumber; Jicama, if you are prepared to baby it; Numane Japanese pickling melon; Molokhia (an Egyptian leafy green); and Lady Godiva pumpkin (grown for the "naked" seeds). Salt Spring Seeds: Featured items this year include Golden Giant amaranth - it looks both beautiful and productive - Spello chick pea, Purple fava bean, Purple Peacock pole bean (we've grown it and can recommend it), Abundant (a more vigorous yet slow-bolting form of) Bloomsdale spinach, phacelia tanecetifolia green manure, and Summer pea, said to be quite heat-tolerant. Fothergill's Perpetual Spinach (a chard) is half price due to an enormous crop of seed. As ever, a wide range of legumes and grains. Other unusual items include Musgrave Munchie carrot, Darcy's Purple leeks, Meres salsify, and Delight bi-colour corn. Semences du Portage: Site is in French. Nouveautés for this year include Brad's Atomic cherry tomato, Greek basil, Yellowstone carrots, Midori Giant edamame, and Bronco green beans. They have their own selection of Red Man onions. Scarlet Ohno turnips are hard to find. There are also quite a number of seed collections available. la Société des Plantes: Site is in French. Emphasis is on permaculture, so a good number of perennial vegetables including mertensia maritima, camassia esculenta, turnip-rooted chervil, skirrets (chervis), crosnes, rumex scutatus French sorrel, and Ste Anne shallots, and the very rare blue-flowered salsify. Look for Noir Long de Pardailhan turnips, Branchu de L'Embarras spring (overwintering) kale, Black Russian fava beans, Green Jewel Lebanese summer squash, and Sonkatök Hungarian moschata squash. Solana Seeds: When I checked their list of new items, right away my eye was caught by Brown Russian cucumbers, Kajari melon (really striking!), Explosive Ember and Purple Flash (ornamental) peppers. I started off sneering at Aji Delight - a heat-free baccatum pepper - but when they mentioned paprika, I thought, yes! A good sweet paprika pepper is hard to find. American Purple Top rutabaga sure looks like a rutabaga, but Brad's Atomic Grape tomato is amazeballs. Sunshine Farm: Located in Kelowna, BC. Very heavy on the tomatoes and beans, but I note they have both Early Green and Thai Long Green eggplants. Alma Paprika (a personal favourite) pepper, but also Casa Aquaria, Chimayo, Fish, Ghost, Padron, Pasilla and Rocotillo, amongst others. Look for Strela, Lily's and Sweet Butter lettuces. I need to try Golden Purslane. Tatiana's TOMATObase: With 1187 varieties of tomatoes listed, this is the place to look if you want a specific rare one. Most of her other listings seem to have been trimmed down, although she has increased her peppers with 59 varieties being available, including Aji Limon, Cambuci from Barbadoes and mentioned as a favourite, Chimayo, Cserko, De Bresse, Rabbit Mouth, and Rooster Spur... Oh how I wish I could grow them all! Don't forget that Tatiana's TOMATObase is also a wiki with information about most of the tomatoes in existance. It's the first place I look whenever I hear of a new one. Terra Edibles: was our original source for seeds when we first started gardening many years ago, and they are still going strong. They have many of our tried and true varieties, including the very hard-to-find but highly worth-while Spanish Skyscraper pea. Also the hard-to-find legume inoculant, available for a fairly short season in the spring, so check. They are strongest on beans and tomatoes, but they have an assortment of other vegetables as well. There is a small but good selection of melons including Charentais, Ginger's Pride, Montreal, Oka, Minnesota Midget, and Petit Gris de Rennes. Squash include Kakai, Galeux d'Eysines, Green Hokkaido, and Red Kuri. Terre Promise: Site now has an English option, but it has some problems. Better to stick to the French. Look for Black Panther edamame, Grosse Blonde Paresseuse (Fat Lazy Blonde to you!) lettuce, Dutch Princess beans, Soissons Gros Blanc à Rame beans, Boston Marrow squash, and Morden Midget (not that small) eggplant. They are strong on perennial (permaculture) items such as Persil de Mer (Sea Parsley), Catawissa walking onions, scorzonera, Chufa, Red (Blood) sorrel, and apios americana. In July Ste Anne shallots will be available. Urban Harvest: A nice collection including new Medallion mache (corn salad), Diamond eggplant, Shishito and Fiarello Sweet peppers, Elephant Head amaranth (highly ornamental!), Tokyo Bekana greens, Tom Thumb lettuce (I recommend it!), Scarlet kale, and Sunrise Bumblebee cherry tomatoes. Not listed as new but still likely-looking are Shooting Star eggplant, Purple Sprouting broccoli, and Giallo de (sic) Italia yellow zucchini. Urban Tomato: Not updated for 2019, but I would expect them to continue with their large selection of tomatoes and a small selection of other vegetables and flowers. West Coast Seeds: Very much like a West Coast equivalent to William Dam, with similar strengths and weaknesses. In spite of their very large number of f1 hybrids (some of them dubiously claimed not be GMO) they have a good selection of really useful open-pollinated seeds as well. I tripped over them last year after I posted when I was looking for as many open-pollinated varieties of cauliflower as I could find. They have 4 kinds, which given the prevalence of f1 hybrids in caulis is quite impressive. They list "Seeds to Watch for in 2019" including Kabuli chickpeas, Calypso slow-bolting cilantro, Yellow Wonder strawberries, Wasabi mustard, and Red Oxheart tomato. Other things that strike my eye include Matilda beans, Sayamusume soy beans, Winterkeeper Lutz beet, Natalino Romanesco and Summer Purple Sprouting broccoli. They have a quartet of open-pollinated radicchios that look lovely, as well as Puntarelle and Sugar Loaf chicories. Abundance kale, Alkindus lettuce, 6 types of quinoa, and Wasabi radish. Plenty of herbs and flowers, gardeners' tools, and a small but nice selection of potatoes rounds things out. Wild Rose Heritage Seed Company: Not yet updated for 2019. They are located in Lethbridge, Alberta so you can expect seeds adapted to short seasons. My impression is of a conservative but sufficiently comprehensive range of heirloom seeds. William Dam Seeds: I've spent the last 2 years complaining that almost everything new that they have is an F1 hybrid. And now this year, their only new vegetable that isn't one is Speedy bean - which admittedly sounds quite interesting. However, I'm willing to bet that the only reason it isn't a hybrid is because you can't (so far) do that with beans. They still have a number of open-pollinated standards but it looks like musical chairs is being played with them. Call out for Sumter pickling cucumbers which are the best pickling cukes we've ever grown, and we've grown quite a few. Still a good place for other gardening equipment that can be hard to find - trays, netting and row covers, organic fertilizer, etc, and a very large selection of ornamentals. from Seasonal Ontario Food https://seasonalontariofood.blogspot.com/2019/01/seed-catalogue-review-of-year-9th-annual.html

Recently, while talking to the New York Times, a marijuana company called CBD the “Bitcoin” of the wellness world. But here is a counterproposal: Adaptogens are actually the cryptocurrency of the wellness world.
Sure, CBD is a bizarrely opaque “miracle” treatment, but many people have some idea what it is, or at least know that it’s a derivative of cannabis. Adaptogens are just as mysterious as CBD or the cryptocurrency Ethereum, and the high-minded promises driving their sales are similarly wild and overreaching. Heck, adaptogen names even sound like crypto names: eleuthero, schisandra, rhodiola.
Broadly speaking, adaptogens are a class of herbal and plant ingredients in supplements that claim to help your body adapt to stress more efficiently. What they supposedly specifically do is cloudier, because there are at least a dozen or more different ones.
Some have long histories as healing modalities over multiple cultures and thousands of years — which gives them a veneer of legitimacy. They act nonspecifically in the body, meaning they don’t work on one single body system or organ, at least according to their proponents. There’s debate among adaptogen believers about which substances can even be considered adaptogens and how they actually work.
As a society, we’re all just really tired and stressed out and looking desperately for some relief, as the rise of viral anxiety products like fidget spinners has shown. Supplement manufacturers have always preyed on those who are looking for a fix that they think they can’t find in the mainstream. Adaptogens have stepped in as a new/old remedy to fill the need for stress relief in the market.
You can buy coffee at Sephora containing adaptogenic mushrooms that will supposedly increase your focus. You can buy adaptogenic coconut butter to “empower your busiest day.” You can buy “dusts” containing adaptogens and other herbs to supposedly help your brain function better and improve your sex life. Ladies, you can even buy an adaptogenic oil “to keep your yoni delicious and supple.”
You can find adaptogenic products at Sephora, Nordstrom, Barneys, and Urban Outfitters. They’re fashionable. You don’t have to hunt them down in natural food stores.
They’ve even proven equally appealing to acolytes of actress and wellness “guru” Gwyneth Paltrow and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, both of whom prominently feature adaptogen-containing products for sale on the Goop and Infowars websites, respectively. When adaptogens landed a feature in the New York Times this past summer, it was a true sign that the fringe interest has finally bled into the mainstream.
Adaptogens are now a growing sector of the $4 trillion wellness industry. According to statistics reported by the American Botanical Council and based on market research, herbal dietary supplement sales were about $7.45 billion, up 7.7 percent from the prior year. In 2017, that number jumped to about $8.1 billion, up 8.5 percent.
It’s difficult to determine a breakdown of how much of that can be attributed to adaptogens since there are so many — up to a dozen or more, depending whom you ask. The most popular, ashwagandha, was the sixth most popular herbal supplement sold in so-called “natural” retail outlets, with more than $10 million in sales just in natural stores, up 25 percent from 2016. (Most popular adaptogen products are sold in combination with other ingredients, so it’s hard to drill down into their exact sales.) It’s still a small market, but it’s definitely growing.
Adaptogens fall perfectly into the gray area that wellness envelops. The language is often vague and invokes mysticism. Users say they can calm you down and also perk you up, depending on which one you need.
It’s easy to see how this could be incredibly appealing to someone who may be simultaneously stressed and exhausted. It’s also easy to see how marketing them can be used to manipulate people into buying them. As with so many wellness trends, they can’t possibly live up to the hype.
It’s common for proponents to talk about this class of ingredients — usually found in powders, capsules, and now even topically — as if they have magical properties. Definitions tend to be vague and broad, and they’re often applied to more than a dozen different ingredients.
“It’s kind of like your invisible internal shield,” says Elena Severin, the director of branch partnerships at the Detox Market, a chain of “clean beauty” and supplement boutiques that is growing quickly and has stores in LA, New York, and Toronto. It carries multiple brands of adaptogen supplements, including the two most popular, Moon Juice and Sun Potion. (Celestial names maybe not coincidental.)
Severin estimates that over the past year or so, the interest in and questions customers have about adaptogens have tripled.
So an invisible shield, got it. Let’s drill down a bit more.
“The simplest way to understand adaptogens is that they help your body to adapt to life,” writes Tero Isokauppila, the co-founder of the adaptogenic mushroom coffee Four Sigmatic, in an email to Vox. “Rather than serving a single purpose, they give your body whatever it needs right now to bring your body in balance.”
Hmm. Let’s hear from the ultimate authority on them.
“An adaptogen is an herb or mushroom that helps the body find homeostasis,” says Amanda Chantal Bacon, the founder of Moon Juice and arguably the godmother of modern adaptogen awareness, on a call with Vox.
Her viral 2015 Elle interview left the internet agog at the words she used — like “Shilajit resin” and “quinton shots” — in a food diary for the magazine. She’s since been covered in multiple publications, including features in the New Yorker in 2016 and in the New York Times magazine in mid-2017.
Much like Gwyneth Paltrow, who sells Moon Juice products on Goop, she’s taken the negative attention and lowkey ridicule and actually turned it into a booming lifestyle brand. Hers happens to be centered on adaptogens.
Bacon continues. “They’re bidirectional,” she says. “They’re going to move energies both ways.”
She explains that this means the same plant can make one person feel invigorated if they need energy and will calm another one down if they’re a “nervous wreck.”
It should be clear now why this class of substances is difficult to understand. Not surprisingly, these substances might not be the powerhouses that these various evangelizers say they are.
Dr. Rashmi Mullur is an assistant professor of medicine in the department of endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism and associate chief of integrative medicine at UCLA. She is one of a handful of board-certified endocrinologists who also have integrative medicine certification.
She has an interest in adaptogens and a practice in LA, the city that is basically ground zero for wellness trends. She doesn’t sell or promote any supplement brands, but she does occasionally recommend them for patients.
“Practically everything is listed as an adaptogen online, but an adaptogen is any herb or supplement that helps the body’s response to stress,” says Mullur.
She says there is no standardized medical definition for adaptogens, and that even the concept of “stress” is defined pretty broadly. It can be caused by endocrine issues (cortisol is the usual hormonal culprit there), physical problems, mental problems, and even temperature. They all can cause the sensation we think of as “stress” and make us feel like crap, to use a layperson’s term.
Adaptogens can be derived from plants, herbs, or mushrooms. The most commonly used ones include ashwagandha, rhodiola, a slew of ginseng varieties, eleuthero, cordyceps, and reishi.
The science on most of these is conclusively inconclusive. Many have only been studied on cell lines or in animals, and if there are human studies, they tend to be published in tiny, niche journals. A science writer who reviewed some of the studies for Self noted that many were not “compliant with international criteria for proper clinical trial reporting.”
“I really don’t recommend anything to a patient unless it has some human studies,” says Mullur.
Ashwagandha, which the Detox Market’s Severin says is often a “gateway” into adaptogens for people, is one of the best-studied, and even has a couple of well-designed modern studies, but that’s not saying much. The subject groups were small, meaning you can’t draw any generalized, meaningful conclusions, and there haven’t been follow-up studies to see if the results could be replicated.
But Mullur explains that it’s thought to work along the pathway called the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA), a neurological and hormone feedback loop that mediates the stress response. There are still some pretty major caveats here.
Studies “don’t always translate to clinical utility,” Mullur says. A lot of the time, patients assume they’re stressed because of an HPA-induced cortisol response, and they try to self-medicate with adaptogens. “I always want to know what the underlying root cause of the fatigue is. Very rarely is the cause of the fatigue a hormonal imbalance,” says Mullur.
Even if someone does have a stressed-out HPA, it’s really not clear from the small amount of available evidence what dose would be effective, how often it should be taken, or who should or shouldn’t take it.
Plus these substances can have side effects, the way a drug does. Ashwagandha has been reported to potentially cause miscarriage. Mullur explains that because it binds to steroid receptors, it can affect hormonal function. “I certainly wouldn’t advise anyone to take it in pregnancy.”
Unlike many of her contemporaries in endocrinology who don’t know much about adaptogen supplements, though, Mullur does sometimes let her patients take them. However, she discourages mixtures of several ingredients because then it’s hard to know what, if anything, might be helping or causing harm. Many of the most popular formulas, like Moon Juice’s, are sold in mixtures and combinations, and there’s no guarantee what is in the formula and in what quantity.
“I’m helping guide patients through the online mess of information,” Mullur says. And this is the most important point here. Most people who are self-medicating willy-nilly with supplements will likely get no real benefit, and could possibly even harm themselves. Mullur is at least an educated medical source, able to evaluate people’s symptoms, consider the other supplements they’re taking, and try to make some sense of it.
When asked if, ultimately, she thought this new trend of adaptogens everywhere was good or bad, Mullur says, “Probably bad. I don’t want to come across as if I hate all herbal supplements, because I don’t, but I think whenever you have trends in medicine that are unregulated, it’s a breeding ground for misuse and abuse.”
Timothy Caulfield would agree. He’s a professor of health law and science policy at the University of Alberta in Canada and an outspoken advocate against the proliferation of pseudoscience. He wrote a book called Is Gwyneth Paltrow Wrong About Everything?: When Celebrity Culture and Science Clash and hosts a Netflix documentary series debunking various wellness trends called A User’s Guide to Cheating Death.
“In total, the solid science is lacking, particularly in the context of many of the marketing claims associated with adaptogens — like the idea that they can induce calm and focus,” he says in an email to Vox.
The bottom line is that you can’t really broadly apply the promise of vague benefits across an entire class of substances without real evidence. But the wellness industry capitalizes on the existence of a gray area and is adept at claiming things without actually claiming anything.
“When it comes to supplements, the law is that you can market it for just about anything, as long as you stay away from saying it can treat or cure a disease. Without any human data on safety, much less efficacy, it’s entirely legal to advertise a supplement as if it is good for your health,” Dr. Pieter Cohen, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School who has studied dietary supplements, writes in an email to Vox. “It’s very lucrative for companies but very unfortunate for consumers looking for something that will actually work.”
A three-tiered definition of what can qualify as an adaptogen actually does exist, dating back to some secretive USSR research on adaptogens. It’s still pretty vague, though. According to NutraIngredients, a business-to-business site geared toward supplement and food-based businesses, to be classified as an adaptogen an ingredient must be “nontoxic”; it must work on a variety of bodily systems rather than just one; and it must “normalize” bodily functions. (The adapto-preneurs above also all echoed this definition.)
But, again, it’s not a recognized definition by any official governing or medical body; it’s just the common classification among those who use and study them.
Adaptogens weren’t always called adaptogens, though. Some, like ashwagandha and ginseng, have been long used and studied as healing substances in ayurvedic and Chinese medicine respectively. The modern iteration, however, all started at laboratories behind the Iron Curtain in the mid-20th century, according to a comprehensive 2010 review paper in the journal Pharmaceuticals.
During World War II, Soviet pilots and submarine crews were given schisandra in pill form, for energy and as a “tonic” to calm them down. The Soviets first apparently became interested in it in the late 19th century after learning about its uses in the Far East.
Dr. Israel Brekhman is often credited as being the godfather of adaptogens and the person who coined the term and clarified the definition. He and his partners apparently racked up more than 1,000 studies on the plants, and won the highest award in the Soviet Union at the time for his work.
According to the review article, “The aim of the stress research was to develop drugs and methods able to stimulate the intrinsic adaptive mechanisms of the organism to help it survive in situations of intense or prolonged stress, whilst preferably maintaining the capability for physical and mental work.” The “organism” in question, presumably, was people.
Which brings us back to Amanda Chantal Bacon. What started out as a personal interest for her, exploring supplements for an autoimmune disease, became the Moon Juice empire in only a few short years.
(There is also Sun Potion, which is a staple in trendy wellness stores. The founders stay more out of the limelight than Bacon, but one co-founder told Racked he considered himself “an avenue for these plants,” setting up shop in Santa Barbara several years ago.)
“I wasn’t concerned with the allopathic science behind it, and the plants really worked for me,” says Bacon. Allopathic medicine, otherwise known as the mainstream kind served up in hospitals and by pharmaceutical companies, is highly suspect in some adaptogenic circles.
Bacon started Moon Juice as a shop in LA, but the now-famous — or infamous — Brain Dust, Sex Dust, and other dusts are sold in mainstream beauty and wellness emporiums like Sephora, Urban Outfitters, and Nordstrom.
Her newest offering, a blend of four adaptogens and other ingredients like sunflower oil, is called SuperYou. She says it sold out multiple times at its several retailers and was out of stock on Moon Juice’s website for several weeks. “People were calling shops and driving to stores just to find one in stock,” she says.
The interest in adaptogens by a mainstream, not particularly granola/crunchy consumer has ballooned this year, according to both Bacon and the Detox Market’s Severin. Severin says this is reflected by the customer who is buying SuperYou. “You’re not going to engage in a 30-minute conversation on what adaptogens do. They just want the pill,” she says. Bacon says another capsule formula is in the works.
Adaptogens, as happens with trendy food and wellness ingredients all the time, have now found their way into skin care. Youth to the People, an indie brand popular at Sephora, has an “adaptogen deep moisture cream” that contains ashwagandha, reishi, and rhodiola. Moon Juice has a skin care line too, as well as that “yoni” oil. It includes a serum and facial acid.
Bacon had been against using skin care for a long time, saying she didn’t believe in it. But when she hit her mid-30s and started to see signs of aging, she caved and tried P50, a popular facial acid beloved by beauty editors and celebrities. She was appalled when she discovered she loved it because, in her words, it’s “so dirty, it’s outlawed in Europe.” (There are different versions of the product because one of its original ingredients, phenol, is indeed banned in topical skin care in some countries.)
So her Moon Juice version is the adaptogenic version. The reishi in it supposedly “combats signs of oxidative stress.”
Perhaps the biggest sign that adaptogens are bleeding into the mainstream is that they’ve already penetrated both the far left and far right sides of popular culture. Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop and Alex Jones’s Infowars both sell supplements containing adaptogens, which Quartz broke down in 2017.
Goop sells Moon Juice products and Four Sigmatic super-mushroom-adaptogen coffees. Infowars sells a product called DNA Force Plus for $75, containing cordyceps, reishi, and other adaptogens, that claims to “support optimal energy levels while adapting your body to handle the daily bombardment of toxins.”
Amazon spits out more than 1,000 results for dozens and dozens of supplement brands when you search for “adaptogens.” But in the end, they have the same major limitations that all supplements do.
“This is a largely evidence-free industry,” says Caulfield, the University of Alberta professor. “Despite the marketing claims, most of us do not need to consume boatloads of supplements. On the contrary, it can be harmful.”
As with all supplements, adaptogens are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration and they can’t make drug-like claims, which is why the bottles are filled with vague words like “well-being” and “calming.” There’s not a guarantee that the ingredients a company says are in the supplement will be there, and there can even be cross-contamination with prescription medications and other substances.
And, as an article on the University of California Berkeley’s wellness site notes, plant-derived supplements like adaptogens have a lot of potential for substance variability due to different plant species used, which may result in different compounds being derived. There’s even a difference in chemical composition depending on what part of the plant is used. There’s no standardization of this and no universally agreed-upon dosing, so it’s essentially a crapshoot, like all supplements are.
Supplement companies have little motivation to study their own products. “They can just say it works,” says Mullur, the UCLA doctor. “They can sell it or they can spend a bunch of money to study it and potentially find that it has no benefit. There’s too much risk.”
So should you buy ethereum (the cryptocurrency) or eleuthero (the adaptogen)? Sure, but only if you’re comfortable with spending money on the unknown.

What I mean by ‘Nature Farming’ is not the same as ‘natural farming’, ‘organic farming’, or ‘natural farming methods’. Explanations for all of these things come up when you do a search online for ‘nature farming’. But nothing turns up for true nature farming. Hopefully this post will show up in the search engine results list soon.
I am literally farming nature.
I’m not doing conventional farming using natural techniques, or practicing organic or permaculture farming (although where I do actually grow things on purpose, I do adhere to those principles).
What I’m farming is already there.
For the most part, the plants I use in my business already grow here naturally. I encourage some of them to multiply by dividing or transplanting or seeding them in more areas, but the habitats to support them already exist here. No tilling involved, though sometimes I do make nursery beds by creating rock wall terraces on the hillsides.
The terraces are in the deep shade under trees with the kinds of leaves that make good mulch for ginseng. They keep the pots from washing away during rains and when the creek floods, provides easy access for seedlings when I need to fill orders, and is a staging/holding area for the items I bring with me to market.
A ginseng habitat in a pot! This one includes a 3-year old American ginseng with a handful of companions for $75. Available only for local pickup at the nursery, or the farmers market booth (check schedule). Reserve in advance to make sure I have one with me by emailing [email protected]. Bare root collections can be shipped in fall.
American ginseng seedlings are the main things that use the terraced beds. I transplant the seedlings to the other habitats and I also put them in pots sell them at market. When it’s not growing season, I sell them as dormant, bare root plants. Wild Ozark is the only certified ginseng nursery in Arkansas. Wild ginseng lives here naturally, and I’ve purchased seeds to grow even more of it. I keep the wild populations separate from the wild-simulated.
When I say ‘wild-simulated’ that means I’m growing the ginseng in the same way it would grow in the wild. All I do is plant the seed in a space where it can flourish. I do have one small area set aside as a teaching environment. It’s my Ginseng Habitat Demonstration Garden. It’s not quite a natural area yet, because it is still recovering from being logged many years ago. As the trees get bigger it will return to a natural dense shade forested habitat.
In addition to the ginseng seedlings and habitat pots, I also keep many of the companions in propagation beds so I can easily transplant them to pots and sell them, or harvest bare root plants for dormant shipping. Those plants include goldenseal, bloodroot, black cohosh, blue cohosh, a variety of ferns, spicebush plants, pawpaw tree seedlings, and doll’s eyes. I also keep some of my other favorites like trillium, Dutchman’s breeches, and trout lilies, too.
Stewardship of Mother Nature versus Stewardship by Me
The Ginseng Habitat Demonstration Garden is not left completely to nature because I’m taking out things like honeysuckle and wild roses. I’m thinning some of the trees I don’t want there to favor some of the ones I do. The reason for that is to speed up the process that will make it a better habitat for the American ginseng and the companion plants that also grow in the same sort of environment. While the rest of Wild Ozark is pretty much left up to the stewardship of Mother Nature, this demonstration garden is being tended by me.
While the garden isn’t an ideal environment yet for the ginseng, it will eventually be so and the plants are doing well enough in the meantime. My process of doing this is helpful to others who want to do the same thing on their own property. Additionally, and the main reason I chose this spot, is because it is in a location close to the front gate and I don’t mind sharing that location with visitors.
Nature Farming means Harvesting Nature
I harvest things provided by nature. Things naturally growing, dropped to the ground, or dried on the stem. Wildcrafting is the gathering of wild plants. I’ll make ointments or extracts and teas from the medicinal plants. Some of them I’ll sell, and some of them I keep for our own household use. The parts I gather include fruits (persimmons, pawpaw), flowers (echinacea and beebalm), berries (elderberries, spicebush berries, raspberry, blackberry, etc.), seeds (lobelia), nuts (hickory, acorns), stems (witch hazel) or roots (ginseng, goldenseal).
Using Nature Farming Products to Create Art
So here’s where my nature farm departs from what most people normally think of when they think ‘farming’. The bulk of what Wild Ozark produces is botanical items most people barely notice. Usually it’s lying on the ground in the process of decomposing so it can return to the soil. Sticks, vines, leaves, bits of bark that fell from a tree… all treasures to me.
These harvests include things I use in my arts and crafts, like mosses and lichens and bark. These are things I simply pick up and put in my bucket during my morning walks.
I use all of these things to create my Forest Folk, Fairy Houses, and Fairy Gardens. These are very popular and I even hold workshops on how to make these things so anyone can learn how a bit of nature farming can lead to beautiful Nature Art. I sell the small ferns for fairy gardens, bags of moss and preserved leaves, too. You can see where I’ve used twigs, acorns, leaves, dried grass, moss and small ferns in the following photos.

Bark from the Shagbark Hickory
One of our Nature Farm harvests is the bark of a certain tree. Burnt Kettle, my husband’s company, uses the bark from Shagbark hickories to make a delicious syrup. These trees grown naturally all around here.
Eventually we’ll harvest the wood from certain trees for my husband’s woodworking projects. He needs a bandsaw and sawmill to make boards from the abundant cedars that grow here.
Indirect Harvests from my Nature Farm
Art, photography, stories and workshops. Being around nature all of the time inspires me to write, draw, and take photos. I love sharing what I learn and enjoy with others, so I’m always happy to be contacted about doing workshops on topics like nature journaling, ginseng growing or habitat identification, and creating nature art. I’m not an expert on photography, so I’ll leave workshops on that to the ones that are. The outstanding photos from the ones I take are available for sale but I don’t have most of them listed at the shop yet.
Thanks for visiting with Wild Ozark website and taking the time to read about what I do here. Come by and visit the Ginseng Habitat Demonstration Garden if you’re in the area during spring and summer or come by the market booth to see the Forest Folk and Fairy Gardens! The market schedule will be kept current so you’ll know where I’ll be and when, but you can always email in advance if you like. Click here to get all of my contact information.
