Top 13: Female Characters in Horror Movies
Today I will presenting you with my top picks for the best female characters in horror movies. I'll be looking primarily at the following qualities:
Development: How well the character is presented to the audience.
Sympathy: How the audience is able to empathize with the situation that the character finds themselves in.
Actions: How the character deals with tough situations and how memorable their actions are.
As you may have noticed, this doesn't necessarily mean that I'll only be looking at protagonists - just well-written, strong women.
Keeping that in mind, I am proud to present to you my Top 13 Female Characters in Horror Movies.
SPOILER WARNING: I will be discussing plot points surrounding these characters, so if you see an awesome lady on this list and you haven't seen the movie she's from, be aware that there will be spoilers in my explanation for putting her on the list.
13. Holly, Pet
Played by Ksenia Solo
The movie sets up to leave the audience with the impression that Holly is nothing more than another captured woman, intended to be a cliche horror victim. Very quickly into the dialogue with her captor we see that there's more to the story, and the character than meets the eye.
Holly, is herself a killer and despite being trapped in a cage for a majority of the film's run time, she's able to take control of her situation and turn the tables on Seth to unexpected and horrific results.
12. Amanda Young, Saw Franchise
Played by Shawnee Smith
We're introduced to Amanda in the first installment of the Saw franchise as the only survivor of Jigsaw's games. Her story is compelling, but what's more intriguing is her reaction to the experience.
"He saved me."
In the second movie she's also in another game, which she explains was because she was cutting herself instead of appreciating her second chance at life. It isn't until the end of the movie that we realize she has teamed up with the killer in an attempt to save more people.
Amanda is crueler than Jigsaw and not as good with setting traps, but it was fascinating to see how this experience changed her life, and how much she genuinely cares for the man who put her through it. She dies in the third installment after failing the emotional test that John puts her through to see if she's worthy of his legacy - but her tragic backstory continues to unfold through flashbacks in later installments of the series.
One thing that I loved about the series is how far back the exposition goes and how deep the characters are, and perhaps the best embodiment of that is found in Amanda.
11. Sarah Carter, The Descent
Played by Shauna Macdonald
The Descent is a great movie for a lot of reasons, the claustrophobic atmosphere, the dark lighting, and not least of all for Sarah, the film's protagonist.
She walks that delicate balance between sympathetic and pragmatic perfectly, always making the right call for her team, getting out as many of her friends as possible. Although we don't know a lot about her life outside of the cave, we don't need to in order to be rooting for her from start to finish.
10. Carrie White, Carrie
Played by Sissy Spacek & Chloe Grace Moretz
Notice that I included both the original film and the remake. While there are highs and lows to both versions, Carrie is a strong character in both of them, as she was in the book adaptation.
Being both the protagonist and the villain of the story, we get to see Carrie as a girl long before we ever see her as a threat - and even when she's burning down the school and painting the town red, we feel for her.
Despite having lived a sheltered life where she was kept by her mother in isolation and abuse, Carrie wants to believe the best of people. She wants to take chances and make human connections. When her trust is yet again broken and she finds herself humiliated, her powers stop liberating her, and instead consume her.
Although you can't really justify her actions, it's hard to blame her for them after forming such a sympathetic bond with her throughout this morbid coming of age story.
9. Erin Harson, You're Next
Played by Sharni Vinson
I think what made Erin so fantastic as a kick ass protagonist was that it was so unexpected. While everyone trapped in the house by insane killers is inclined to make all the dumb horror movie decision, Erin doesn't skip a beat.
She traps the house, gets a weapon, and starts figuring out how to make it out alive - surprising both her attackers and the audience.
8. Clarice Starling, Silence of the Lambs
Played by Jodie Foster
She's ambitious, she's talented, and she's quickly making a name for herself in a male-dominated arena of FBI agents. Clarice Starling is everything that I like to see in a powerful female character and it's no wonder that Hannibal Lector is so taken with her, and her story about the lambs.
Although she continued to be a part of the story in the later movies, Silence of the Lambs was where she really shined.
7. Ellen Ripley, Alien
Played by Sigourney Weaver
Ripley is iconic, and it's well deserved. She's fearless, practical, and knows when to kick some alien ass.
Although she really comes into her own in the later installments of Alien, there's something to be said about her character in this first movie, simply because we don't know her yet, and I think a lot of us didn't expect her to come out on top.
6. Mary Mason, American Mary
Played by Katharine Isabelle
It can be really tricky to write well for an introverted character. Since movies usually rely heavily on dialogue for characterization there aren't a lot of quiet female protagonists that we remember so fondly.
The film makes excellent use of visuals to paint a picture of Mary's life and despite her not being very talkative, we get a good feel for her personality which makes us really feel for her when bad things keep piling up.
It's good characterization - especially for someone who turns out to be a villain in her own way. This is another film that's good at writing dynamic characters who do bad things, but who find ourselves rooting for anyway.
5. Blind Mag, Repo! The Genetic Opera
Played by Sarah Brightman
Beautiful, talented, and absolutely fearless.
Mag accidentally signs her life and lovely voice away to a company that she doesn't believe in. When she announces that it's time for her to leave GeneCo, rumors circulate that she'll be killed for breach of contract after her final performance.
She dies that night, but she does it on her own terms. After one final, tragic song, she rips out the eyes that the company gave her, smiling in her final moments and giving us one of the most memorable scenes of the film.
4. Nancy Thompson, A Nightmare on Elmstreet
Played by Heather Langenkamp
Nancy, like any sane person in her situation, had a tough time believing at first that she was being chased in her dreams. That didn't stop her from learning all that she could to defend herself in both her waking and dreaming life.
This fight for survival culminated in one of the most epic action scenes in early horror films.
She's just a normal teenager at the beginning of the film, but watching her grow up so much, so fast, and adapt to a horrific situation earned her a lot of respect from audiences.
3. Jessie Burlingame, Gerald's Game
Played by Carla Gugino
Jessie is such a real character, and in terms of writing it doesn't really get much better than this. After being molested by her father as a young girl and sworn to silence, she falls into an all too real pattern of subtle abuse in the relationship she has with her husband.
When she finds herself trapped in a desperate situation, she has no choice but to come to terms with everything that happened to her. Even as she's breaking down psychologically she's playing out different scenarios and figuring out how to survive.
She makes it through the experience a stronger woman, and instead of letting the event further traumatize her, she uses the experience to do good in the world, helping other victims of abuse.
2. Sidney Prescott, Scream series
Played by Neve Campbell
As you've seen on this list, there are a lot of bad ass girls who fight for their lives and win, but none of them are quite as memorable to me as Sidney Prescott from the Scream movies.
Neve Campbell's great acting and the franchise's self-awareness contribute to this, but not as much as Sidney herself. She's learning to trust people, coping with the trauma of her mother's death, and navigating the life of a student - all while being relentlessly stalked by a crazed killer who has seen a few too many movies.
Her quick thinking keeps her alive not just through the initial movie, but through three sequels over the course of more than a decade.
One thing that I like about Sidney is that we get to see her turn into a survivor in the first film, and we get to see the lasting effect that it's had on her in the sequels. She learns from each experience and gets stronger in each movie.
1. Maddie Young, Hush
Played by Kate Siegel
I might be a little biased, because it's nice to see a writer kick so much ass in a film, but Maddie was amazing.
It's not just that she's a woman living alone in an isolated area who is able to outsmart a killer, it's the fact that it seems like she has so much working against her. She's deaf, mute, and taken completely by surprise when she's chosen as a stranger's next victim.
Her coherent thinking saves her as she comes up with plan after plan to get the edge. She's able to take the crossbow away from her killer, get him out in the woods, taunt him into making mistakes, and improvised traps so she can weaken him.
She even manages to save her cat from his grasp.
Maddie young is a talented, capable individual before the attack and during she is absolutely the definition of bad ass. Since she can't use her voice to goad her would-be killer, she writes him a message in her own blood - and if that's not hardcore I don't know what is.

For my last choice #horrorsisterswihm9 #wihm9 I thought I would switch it up with nostalgia. I recently went on a Saw binge and it got me thinking whatever happened to Tanedra Howard and that got me thinking about VH1's Scream Queens, did y'all watch it? The first season was hosted by #shawneesmith with acctress competing for a role in #sawvi I was in front of my TV for every episode, hanging on to what the next challenge would be for the girls not to get cut from The show. The way some women are into the Bachelor, that's how much I enjoyed Scream Queens! * * * As for Tandera she took the "horror crown" in the first season going on to the shocking flesh cutting opening scence in #saw6 and a small part in #saw3D No other horror movies from her to date. * * * I would love to see her comeback and revive Screams Queens with #vivicaafox You gotta have Vivica to add sass to the show ( I can dream can't I) 😉 * * * 👿💜 @chibagrrl @coven_werewolf @lcfremont @afooltocry @tangoineden #spreadthehorror #vh1screamqueens #blackwomeninhorror #horrorsisters #fanaticsoffright
