Someone posted a question the other day; what is a great movie that you would never watch again? Well, for me, this is it. I braved a second watch through, and was surprised at how different it appeared the second time around. Things I didn't see the first time became clearer. All the signs were there where they hadn't been before... Maybe you should watch it twice - if you can stomach it, but I warn you, watching it as a parent is deeply unsettling. It's deviating slightly from my usual horror vibe, but dependent on how you look at it, this is horror. And let's face it, we really don't talk about Kevin enough anymore... We Need To Talk About Kevin (2011) is a slow burn, so brace yourself. It starts where it should - at the beginning - showing how Kevin's mother (Tilda Swinton) and father (John C. Reilly) meet in a drunken, seedy one night stand where Kevin (Jasper Newell/Ezra Miller) is conceived. From here we start to see various parts in the timeline of their tumultuous lives, slowly fitting the pieces together until the final, horrifying outcome. It's a bitter battle between mother and son throughout, with the classic, mostly-absent father figure who can't see what happens when he's not present. It hits particularly hard with the lack of support a mother faces when dealing with a 'troubled' child, from both her husband, and medical practitioners. The "he'll grow out of it" mentality that is ultimately more damaging than you could imagine.... We Need to Talk About Kevin Lionel Shriver
Tumblr media
Lionel Shriver’s novel, We Need to Talk About Kevin, is one that has garnered a conflicted range of reviews. Due to its controversial focus on a school shooter, made all the more jarring coming from their mother’s frank and darkly humorous perspective, the book is often viewed as disturbing. Although this is true, it should not be overlooked, as it is also a deeply insightful exploration into the nature nurture debate. We Need to Talk About Kevin follows a series of letters written by a woman called Eva to her husband, Franklin. The letters detail Eva and Franklin’s relationship from marriage to parenthood, focusing on the stunted relationship they have with their son Kevin that leads to that dreaded Thursday.
I must admit, Shriver’s writing was difficult to enjoy at first. I found the narrative rambling and at times, pretentious. However, as the story progressed it became easier to read and I started to appreciate the detailed descriptions and witty tone. I really liked the letter format that Shriver implemented because not only did it allow a female voice to come to the forefront but it also created an enigmatic quality to the novel. I was intrigued to find out why Eva was writing letters and how she had come to this point in her life.
Characterisation is a huge part of We Need to Talk About Kevin, especially with Eva and Kevin. With Eva, Shriver’s depiction left me feeling ambivalent. On the one hand, I really sympathised with her, especially during her struggle to adjust to motherhood. Her futile attempts to make Kevin like her were agonizing and frustrating; even more so when Franklin didn’t support her, leaving her isolated and alone. Yet, I also started to find her flippant remarks unnerving and her unwavering support for Kevin, even after everything he had done, difficult to accept. Shriver’s characterisation of Kevin though is what makes this novel so chilling. His presence pervades the narrative, whether he’s there or not. I found him an incredibly creepy and sullen character, and I’m surprised that Franklin could never see it!
Despite Kevin’s barbaric behaviour and the hints about Thursday being consistent throughout, I was still not prepared for the novel’s ending. Not only was Kevin’s rampage so gruesomely descriptive that it was hard to read, it was also shocking to find out that it didn’t even begin at the gym. The true extent of Kevin’s actions are even more heart breaking than first thought.
Ultimately, We Need to Talk About Kevin, is a difficult book to read and come to terms with, especially with how relevant the story is to today. However, although it left me emotionally confused and numb, I found it to be an incredibly riveting and thought-provoking exploration into the essence of humanness and the dark and hidden corners of suburban life. A must-read for all.

“We Need To Talk About Kevin” 2011, Dir. Lynne Ramsay I first saw this film years ago when it came out, and remembered being blown away by it. Watching it now, nearly 7 years later, I’ve come to appreciate it on a level I previously could not. In the last few years, I have strived to become much more feminist in nature, and that informed my viewing of this movie a lot. This movie is unabashedly female and it is heartbreaking. Ramsey gives us a character who isn’t a flawless martyr. She’s real and played to absolutely perfection by Tilda Swinton. The viewer doesn’t quite know where to land with her, even though they feel bad for her circumstances. Ezra Miller, as well as all the kid actors in the film, are all breakthroughs. Haunting and real. My only real complaint is some of it is a tad pretentious and on the nose. It got better as the film went along and I strapped in for the ride, but at first it was a bit much. This film is a masterwork in storytelling and performance, and is a definite must see. I may one day make a longer filmed review and analysis of this movie. Is that something you all would be interested in? Let me know down below, as well as what you thought of this film! 9/10 #film #movie #filmreview #filmreviews #moviereview #moviereviews #review #WeNeedToTalkAboutKevin #TildaSwinton #EzraMiller #LynneRamsay
