We Need to Talk About Kevin Lionel Shriver

Lionel Shriver’s novel, We Need to Talk About Kevin, is one that has garnered a conflicted range of reviews. Due to its controversial focus on a school shooter, made all the more jarring coming from their mother’s frank and darkly humorous perspective, the book is often viewed as disturbing. Although this is true, it should not be overlooked, as it is also a deeply insightful exploration into the nature nurture debate. We Need to Talk About Kevin follows a series of letters written by a woman called Eva to her husband, Franklin. The letters detail Eva and Franklin’s relationship from marriage to parenthood, focusing on the stunted relationship they have with their son Kevin that leads to that dreaded Thursday.

I must admit, Shriver’s writing was difficult to enjoy at first. I found the narrative rambling and at times, pretentious. However, as the story progressed it became easier to read and I started to appreciate the detailed descriptions and witty tone. I really liked the letter format that Shriver implemented because not only did it allow a female voice to come to the forefront but it also created an enigmatic quality to the novel. I was intrigued to find out why Eva was writing letters and how she had come to this point in her life. 

Characterisation is a huge part of We Need to Talk About Kevin, especially with Eva and Kevin. With Eva, Shriver’s depiction left me feeling ambivalent. On the one hand, I really sympathised with her, especially during her struggle to adjust to motherhood. Her futile attempts to make Kevin like her were agonizing and frustrating; even more so when Franklin didn’t support her, leaving her isolated and alone. Yet, I also started to find her flippant remarks unnerving and her unwavering support for Kevin, even after everything he had done, difficult to accept. Shriver’s characterisation of Kevin though is what makes this novel so chilling. His presence pervades the narrative, whether he’s there or not. I found him an incredibly creepy and sullen character, and I’m surprised that Franklin could never see it! 

Despite Kevin’s barbaric behaviour and the hints about Thursday being consistent throughout, I was still not prepared for the novel’s ending. Not only was Kevin’s rampage so gruesomely descriptive that it was hard to read, it was also shocking to find out that it didn’t even begin at the gym. The true extent of Kevin’s actions are even more heart breaking than first thought.

Ultimately, We Need to Talk About Kevin, is a difficult book to read and come to terms with, especially with how relevant the story is to today. However, although it left me emotionally confused and numb, I found it to be an incredibly riveting and thought-provoking exploration into the essence of humanness and the dark and hidden corners of suburban life. A must-read for all.
