Name: Plugg
Debut: Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards
Do you know about Plugg? I hope you know about Plugg! But if you don’t, that’s okay. In fact, we have a quote from Plugg for this exact occasion!
“I'm Plugg! What? Never heard of me?“
Plugg originated in Kirby 64, though as a rather rare enemy appearing only in late-game stages. In fact, I didn’t even remember Plugg after playing 64! I don’t know why! And I feel such great shame for that.
Here it is as it appears in 64! This game has a really wonderful art style! The models use simple shapes and often incorporate sprites into the models (Plugg’s prongs and feet are 2D!), and the flat colors make it all very pleasant to look at. Also lovely is how Plugg attacks! It will jump and plug itself into the ground, sending sparks along its surface. Were you wondering what Plugg plugs into? There is the answer! The world is Plugg’s outlet!
Kirby 64 came out in 2000, and after that, what happened to Plugg? A whole lot of nothing! Nothing at all, for years and years and years! But Plugg would come back. Plugg would come back in a big, big way!
On January 11th, 2018, a Nintendo Direct Mini released, containing information about new abilities and new ways to mix abilities in Kirby Star Allies. And in that trailer, a friend was seen.
There it was. Plugg. Plugg, coming to a new HD video game in 2018! I had seen Plugg previously, but it was at this point I truly felt I had seen Plugg. Maybe because this is not just any Plugg! It’s wearing a hat, and has the coloration of Player 2! This time, we can PLAY AS PLUGG! No longer an enemy there to be eliminated, but a friend, here to be embraced!
Here is a real Plugg I made because I love Plugg so much! But a temporary Plugg, because I still need to charge my phone and can’t do that if it has Silly Putty feet!
Despite how wonderful and joyful the return of Plugg was, there was some trepidation. We knew Plugg was playable... by another player, when playing multiplayer. But I don’t play multiplayer, and there is no one around who would play multiplayer with me! Would I be able to play as Plugg on my own? That got me thinking of the extra modes in modern Kirby games, and how they wonderfully give the spotlight to different characters, like Dededetour and Meta Knightmare. It was a very hopeful dream, but... what if this time, with so many playable characters, they let us choose ANYONE for the extra mode this time? What if I could play as Plugg...?
WELL GUESS WHAT THEY DID IT! This time, Extra Mode was Guest Star Mode! Or I guess more accurately, Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go! Mode! An entire adventure, potentially starring Plugg! I could play as my new favorite character ever, just as I had dreamed of! It was a lovely time.
And you know they loved Plugg, too! When Dream Friends (actually ANOTHER feature I had been dreaming of for the series!), they each got their own Celebration Picture, and look who’s in the one for Adeleine and Ribbon! Tumbling through the magical portal is none other than Plugg! Does this mean Plugg is to some extent a Dream Friend as well? It’s certainly a dream come true!
There’s even some lore about Plugg, to an extent! In Kirby 64, Plugg granted the Spark ability, while in Star Allies, it gives the Plasma ability. This is not just a simple ability replacement, though. In Star Allies, Plugg has a little screw on its butt that wasn’t there before. And according to King Dedede on Twitter (I am so happy to be saying those words), that is the result of Plugg being upgraded! Of course, we have no idea who created Plugg and why, or who upgraded it and why, or whether the same group did both. Maybe the Shiver Star inhabitants created it and the Haltmann Works Company upgraded it, but I don’t know! It doesn’t matter why, what matters is the result, of Plugg being here with us.
Speaking of that, I didn’t even mention much of Plugg’s design yet! That’s because it goes without saying. It is perfect. The design is perfect, and the chosen colors are perfect. My favorite colors, cyan, green, and yellow, in fact!
If Kirby Fighters 2, where a mini Plugg appears as part of the Zap Weapon is any indication, Plugg’s appearance in Star Allies was only the beginning of a renaissance! We will continue to see Plugg for many, many years to come! I am sure of it.
