The Eternal Endings Cast and History: The Down-Timers
//Hey everyone, Mod Bubbles here! I bring you some more of My Thoughts.
//Having gone through Danganronpa: Eternal Endings with my friend Timeline Anon, I can say it's one of the most unique and interesting fangans we've seen thus far. We had no idea how it would work, but somehow it really seems like it can.
//One thing that really piques my interest isn't just that the cast is in the afterlife, but the fact that all of them come from very different points in history. That's something I think is worth speculating on, especially with how it may play into their characters, both in terms of their places in history and the context from where they're from.
//There have always been small historical tidbits in DR, both canon and fangan, but Eternal Endings is the first one I've seen that specifically has real-world events playing a role here. Our protagonist, Krystal Willard, died in 2021, specifically referencing how the travel restrictions imposed during the height of the Pandemic were being lifted.
//This game specifically doesn't take place in the same timeline as the Hope's Peak saga, since the founder of the talent program is another figure altogether, but I thought it would be interesting to examine the eras each of them are from.
//As a bit of shorthand, I also decided to borrow some terminology from Eric Flint's Ring of Fire series (a great book series btw), where people from the past are referred to as "Down-Timers" and people from the present/future are "Up-Timers."
//This also just gives me a chance to talk about history, which I enjoy doing : P
//So, without further ado, let's get into it.
THE DOWN-TIMERS:
Zhao Ying (1903-1932)
Hailing from the furthest back in time is Zhao, a personal favorite of mine, who was the Ultimate Singer. Just from that time frame, she would've been around for the end of the Qing Dynasty, the Warlord Era, the rise of the Nationalist Government and the very early stages of the Second Sino-Japanese War and World War II. Just days before her death- on February 18th 1932- the Imperial Japanese conquered Manchuria and established the puppet state of Manchukuo.
There's also a bit of an anachronism with the PRC's flag being there, given that the design wasn't adopted until 1949, but that's probably for the benefit of a modern audience.
Anyway, Zhao is an entertainer and doesn't really make a lot of commentary on these conflicts. She's a singer, a dancer, and an actress, and had an upcoming role before her death. This is very interesting because the 1920s and 30s represented the emergence of cinema in China. The Burning of the Red Lotus Temple, a 16-part box office hit, was released between 1928-1931 and represents one of the first martial arts action films, but has sadly been lost to time.
Zhao was more than likely a silent film star, although 1931 brought the first Chinese sound film, Sing-Song Girl Red Peony, so it's possible her voice has been recorded as well. If I had to guess, Zhao probably lived around Shanghai, given that it was the center of the Chinese entertainment industry in this era.
One of the most overlooked aspects of Chinese history is that, while China itself was never colonized, it was forced to make Concessions to outside powers. These were pieces of territory in major cities like Shanghai, which were effectively enclaves of foreign territory that were exempt from Chinese law and provided a foothold for European Empires, America, and even Japan to exert influence and trade.
A byproduct of this is that many gangs and secret societies were allowed to operate with impunity in the Concessions, which resulted in prostitution, drug dealing and gambling being quite common. This probably explains why Zhao isn't a fan.
However, the saddest thing about the losses in Zhao's life? She was a mother.
Given that the photo says 1932, this had to be around January or Early February, meaning Zhao's boy, Wang Wei, couldn't have been more than 2 or 3. In-story, she's in tears over leaving her son behind and wonders if he'll even remember her.
Not to make the hurt worse, but given that Shanghai would be occupied by the Japanese Empire from 1937-1945...well, I'm going to hope that the poor kid and the rest of her family made it out.
Earnest Mikkola (1910-1945)
Speaking of World War II, Earnest would've been around for it and its prequel. Essentially the Indiana Jones figure of this setting, Earnest was a worldwide reputation as an explorer, having discovered new animals, plants and even civilizations. His expeditions took him quite a ways around the world, but it's his death that catches my attention.
See, Earnest is Finnish. I've seen some people worried that this means he was one the side of the Axis during the war, but this is a misunderstanding. See, just months after the Invasion of Poland, Finland was on the receiving end of an ultimatum from Stalin. Because he felt the border was too close to Leningrad (today St. Petersburg), he demanded Finland hand over some land to provide a buffer zone or else. The Finns said no, obviously, and thus began the Winter War.
To put it simply, while the Soviets ultimately got what they wanted, the Finns gave them a pretty bloody nose in the process. In just three and a half months, the Soviets suffered over five times as many casualties as the Finns and their international reputation suffered worse.
The conflict was also ultimately pointless, as Finland- while it didn't side with Germany- formed what was an alliance of convenience. When Operation Barbarossa took place, the Finns actually occupied much of the Karelia peninsula, even more than they had before. This lasted until 1944.
That's when Finland pulled an Uno reverse card and sided against Germany, starting the Lapland War, where the Finnish military tried to push all Axis forces out of their borders, and this lasted until April 1945, just a month before victory in Europe was declared.
How does this relate to Earnest? I guess it depends on where he was during the Lapland War, whether he was at home or elsewhere in the world, and whose side he was ultimately in favor of. Could that be why he was poisoned? It remains to be seen.
Yun Jung-Hoon (1936-1952)
Continuing with the war trend, here we have the first one to ask a historical question: local fly boy Yun. Even just from the patch on his shoulder, I could tell what his deal probably was before Krystal even spoke with him.
Sure enough, Yun here was a pilot in the Korean War. For those who don't know, Korea- which had been occupied by Japan since 1910- was divided along the 38th parallel North after World War II. The Soviets occupied by the north and established a communist government, led by Kim Il-Sung, while the Americans occupied the south and established a non-communist government lead by Syngman Rhee.
If you're only familiar with the North/South divide in the modern day, this is where it began. In the Spring of 1950, Kim lead an invasion to unify the country under communist rule, and because the South was militarily weak at the time, he thought it would be easy and conquered all the way down to an area called the Pusan Perimeter. Of course, America and a United Nations coalition force arrived to push them out.
They managed to push their way up to the northern border, where it seemed possible to conquer the North...only for the newly-established People's Republic of China to send hundreds of thousands of troops to support the North. They pushed the front lines south, where it stagnated around the 38th parallel for the next three years.
Based on his death date, if he died in battle, I'm guessing it was either in the First Battle of Hook or The Battle of Triangle Hill.
Yun also asks Krystal about the outcome of the war, but he decides he doesn't want to know and instead says he needs time to mentally prepare himself. I can't say I blame him, given that the war he died in was ultimately just a stalemate and technically never really ended.
Oumar Dembélé (1939-1969)
Another personal favorite of mine, Oumar is hilariously melodramatic, but also quite empathetic and emotionally-conscious dude. He's a relationship counselor and a published author, which is very interesting.
Oumar is Malian, and with that time frame, he would've been born when the country was under French colonial rule. At the time, Mali was called "French Sudan" and was ruled as part of French West Africa, a federation of eight colonies in the region. Mali and Senegal both achieved independence as the Federation of Mali on June 20th, 1960, although their status as a federation only lasted two months.
Even under French rule, there was a considerable divide between Northerners, particularly the Tuareg people, and Southerners. Under independence, the country's first president, Modibo KeĂŻta, moved quickly to establish a single-party state, nationalized a great deal of services, and withdrew from the French Community in favor of closer ties to the Eastern Bloc, although economic problems lead to them rejoining the Franc Zone in 1967. He would later be deposed in a coup the following year.
This doesn't mean Oumar would've stayed in Mali, of course. In fact, I get the impression he probably moved to someplace like France to become as prominent as he had. This probably would've come in the wake of the Algiers War, when France saw many years of economic growth.
Oumar's death is also equally interesting and horrifying to consider, given that he was specifically crushed in a small venue.
This was a case of human crush injury. This is when a crowd of people is so tightly packed together (4â5 people per square meter/2.5 square feet per person), there's no room for them to move or even breathe.
The 1989 Hillsborough Disaster is a pretty infamous example of that, where 72,841 people compacted together in a stadium designed to hold just under 40,000. The result? 766 people were injured, 94 died and another 3 later died of injures they received. The crowd was so packed that even people who had died were still held up through the pressure.
Personal space is important.
Bonnie Clark (1959-1978)
And here's Bonnie, easily the saddest character in the game and I can't blame her at all. Out of all the Down-Timers, she's the one we actually learn the most about in her introduction. She has the vibes of an all-American girl, with a very fitting accent and everything.
She had a friend group that she frequently went to the arcade with, and she worked at a place called Don's Diner. How do we know? Krystal finds a picture.
"Now disgraced" in this context likely refers to Bonnie's untimely death. If any of you are familiar with the Terrible "Accident" PSA on workplace safety, you can probably imagine what happened. It's easily one of the most horrific ways to go, not gonna lie ^^;
Beyond that, there's not too much to really say with her in terms of historical context, given that she's a pretty archetypal small town girl, albeit much more pessimistic than many other examples. That could relate to how the 1970s were a difficult time for America, both economically and socially, due to factors like OPEC's oil embargo due to the Yom Kippur War.
That being said, it was still a time of significant social, scientific and technological progress, although for a teenager trying to make end's meet, that probably would've been a small comfort.
On a much lighter note, Bonnie got to enjoy some of the classic video games of the era: Pong, Space Invaders, Breakout, Death Race, Asteroids, Galaxian and many others.
Fernando Gomes (1958-1984)
And here we have our local himbo, Fernando. He's a pretty laid-back dude and his bio states that, while he's attained worldwide fame for his surfing skills, he prefers to stick around his home town and stay in the lifeguard job he's had since he was a teenager.
Even if you know history, it's almost easy to forget while talking to him that Fernando would've spent most of his life under a military dictatorship.
The Fifth Brazilian Republic, which was established after a coup on April 1st, 1964, was a brutally repressive government. Strong anti-communist policies, hard-line conservatism, political repression, mass censorship, curtailment of freedom of speech and the widespread killing, torturing and deporting of dissidents were all commonplace, particularly in the 70s.
So common, in fact, that the decade between 1968 and 1978 is also called the "Years of Lead."
Despite this, Brazil adopted a highly diversified and developmentalist economic model that helped boost their economy, and they developed the slogan "Brazil: Love it or Leave it." Fernando, ironically, seemed to adhere to that slogan given his love for his hometown.
Of course, Brazil would eventually return to democracy, but Fernando would fatally hit his head on a rock before he could see it happen.
Sonechka Morozova (1978-1996)
And another favorite of mine, Soneckha is our local magical weirdo, whose predictions of the future have been far more accurate than chance would suggest. She's also not disappointed that she's dead, but rather than she didn't end up as Queen of Hell like she wanted.
She's also very interesting in that, while she doesn't seem to play well with others, she'll respect you if you respect her in return, such as not giving her a nickname and understanding what a soothsayer is.
Timeline-wise, Sonechka would've been around for the latter days of the Soviet Union, the Chernobyl Disaster, the collapse of communist rule over Eastern Europe, the independence of the Russian Federation, the 1993 Constitutional Crisis and the First Chechen War.
It's not hard to see how, given that she has the ability to predict the future to a supernatural degree, she likely saw these events, and watching them play out probably shaped a lot about her personality and outlook.
My biggest question is how she wound up dying of hypothermia in the middle of the summer, as July is actually the warmest month in the country.
Petra Nightingale (1987-2006)
First introduced as "Scene Kid," Petra is definitely someone whose design would grab your attention. Her talent was a bit of a surprise to me, but her attitude, not to mention her sweet personality, really make her well-suited to caring for seniors.
Petra is English and would've been a 90's kid, so her time might've been spent with things like classic shows, crisp packets with prizes in them, Mr. Blobby and that time when the console wars were between Nintendo and Sega.
In terms of social and political history, the 90s saw the end of Margaret Thatcher's time as prime minister, the restoration of relations with Argentina after the Falkland War, the latter half of the Mad Cow Disease scandal and the Good Friday Agreement that brought an end to the Troubles.
Petra also mentions she's from Brighton, and during her childhood, she would've seen the city become much more prominent, which resulted in housing prices going up and a lot of people moving away. Would that have influenced her decision to start caring for seniors who couldn't afford to move.
I think the most interesting part to consider is that, as a senior caregiver, Petra has probably met a lot of veterans from Britain's various conflicts, from both World Wars to the various colonial conflicts to maybe even people who were in conflict with the IRA during the early days of the Troubles.
Not that I think it would've made Petra a judgemental person, as she seems very nice, but someone so young and very clearly quite lonely could have had her worldview shaped quite a bit by vets from these conflicts. I just think it's interesting to consider.
Vivian Wright (1966-2015)
Finally, the most recent Down-Timer and one from an era most of us are familiar with, Vivan was a Canadian teacher who was killed in a car accident. She's actually the first one Krystal meets after arriving, and we see that, while Viv is pretty nice, she also definitely has those anger issues.
I think most of us know what she would've been around to witness just before her death, but in terms of her adolescence, she would've been around for things such as Trudeaumania, civil rights for the First Nations, the many political tensions within Quebec and Terry Fox's famous attempt to run cross-country.
As the Ultimate Teacher, Viv probably has a lot to share on these topics, and I think it's interesting to consider how she could potentially be the one to help her fellow Down-Timers accommodate to the discoveries that came after their deaths. It's an interesting possibility.
//So there you go, some historical context for each of our Down-Timers, which I think could potentially play a role in their characters, arcs and motivations in the story. It's understandable that a lot of them probably have values that we today wouldn't agree with, but the same could be said of us and the Up-Timers, who deserve their own essay as well.
//This is also my way of saying "Go check out Eternal Endings, it's genuinely interesting and I want to see more!" : P

Gambit Fantasy XII
Finished Final Fantasy XII last night. Itâs one of those games Iâve started several times across the years, but always just left it hanging, like happens with many other games. But now Iâve played it and it was neat. Wouldnât say itâs my favorite Final Fantasy, but I do see why itâs very loved by some, itâs highs are extremely high.
Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age based on the, Japan only release, Final Fantasy XII: International Zodiac Job System. Who doesnât love job systems? Sadly I donât, not here at least. Iâm not saying itâs all bad, itâs probably an improvement over the original game, itâs just that the whole license board system is ass. I do understand game wanting to keep some measure of balance by not giving you access to powerful spells of techniques too early. But because majority of things on the license boards are stuff you have acquire elsewhere, and thus unlocking bits of the boards is unrewarding and itâs hard to work towards anything specific. Whatâs worse lots of magics and techniques are hidden, gained from random chests or sidequests or whatever. Early on I looked at the jobs and went âoh, Foebreaker sounds cool, and they get debuffs, those can be useful,â throughout the game I didnât unlock a single debuff technique. Core aspect of a job didnât exist in my playthroguh. Thatâs not great.
Gambits on the other hand I liked quite a lot. I felt I was being lazy with them, made them simple and adjusted only when necessary. But I saw how someone could go deep with the system, utilize the alternative layouts and make gambits for specific party configurations, where I wanted to be able to swap party around when I felt like it. And then the game plays itself. Which is fine also not the whole truth. There is navigating the maps, picking fights and targets and reacting to unexpected situations.
There is lot of the game I didnât play or see. I did some hunts, all of the low rank easy ones, some midgame ones, Found couple optional espers, did some sidequests. Got a taste of everything, but didnât go out of my way to do everything. And there definitely is lot outside the mandatory stuff, found fully optional zone that even had introductory cutscene, inside I saw that enemies had too big numbers so I left and never returned. And doing just that much, not getting any of the best equipment or spells and the late game story felt fairly easy. And Iâm not complaining, Iâve often said that I prefer my rpgs to be too easy rather than too hard, and I know I could have found challenges had I searched for them. Even still, while it wasnât hard, I had moment in final boss where I had to do little scrambling to save the situation after some deaths and eating of damage.
And so went another Final Fantasy from âtodoâ-pile to âdoneâ-pile. Had such a good time that part of me wants to go back and do the optional stuff I left undone. Also I started playing the DS rts sequel, which is definitely not scratching any of the same itches, but Iâll see how that goes.

Smap ramblings
I stumbled upon twitter trends in japan specifically the topic of smap's legendary controversial video on january 18, 2016.
Why I brought this up? because in early January this year, Japanese news, Bunshun release their commemorative 100-year article. it includes more in-depth news in a novel format from many professional sources. And one of them was the one who was responsible for writing the script for that day.
Osamu Suzuki who was working as SmapxSmap's scriptwriter for 20 years wrote a story behind the scene from that day.
In truth I...somehow glad not joined the fandom during that year.
But it still hurt to think of how I knew and went to smap.
It began when I found this video. I want to know more about SMAP because Judgment's main protagonist is also a member of it. I still remembered the first time I heard this song, my impression was "Wow this song is really catchy! I love the instruments they'd used!"
youtube
Well tbh, I am not a fan of vocal songs. Really, I'm super picky to vocal artists. A bit weird to say why, but I am sensitive to ASMR things. No matter how high or low pitch they take, their breath control is always the number one problem for me. So my list of vocal artists can be counted with fingers compared to thousands of music varieties from electronic, instrumentals, bands, video game BGM and so much more.
But that's a bit subjective to others, moving on.
And that's what I loved about this song in the first place. It's not grand, just simple, warm and catchy beat to support the vocals. I love that the guitars at the start and the end of the song are enough to get the attention of listeners.
The lyrics are heavily inspiring too 'till this day. But what caught me off guard is the people who sing it.
I dare to say SMAP is not great when it comes to singing techniques (well, they proudly admit it's not their strongest suit). Not like V6 or Arashi or if I have to compare other boybands outside of japan in that era such as TVXQ, SuJu, Big Bang, and West Life, no, it's not that great. I'm not a fan of those but I'm fortunate to have my sisters with a wide range of boybands, especially from japan and Korea so I knew most of the boybands' qualities from them.
All SMAP members have their own unique(and odd) voice that might not be accepted by today's standards...
heck, even all of their specialties might not be accepted by today's standards :p
So distinctively unique that I can manage to determine which is which from the first time I heard the song. It is surprising that I usually can't tell the differences between the other member of a group even after many times I repeatedly listened.
Yet in all differences, when it comes to one voice, their distinct pitch instinctively blends in harmony.
Therefore Sekai is always a dear song to me with all that plus. Up until now, that song gives me uplifting hope in desperate times. (and many other examples to prove but that's a story for another time)
...and yet I shamefully regret my first SMAP video was that one.
Back to bunshun topic.
My own view of celebrities: Never like to know their slice-of-life stories. I usually look at them like stage actors: they performed, entertained, and led the show.
That's it, I don't care whatever they're up to behind the scene unless they tell them in public (via interviews, radio personality, tv shows or their own social media). And I'm still doing that for all my fav celebrities around the world. Therefore, I never had any intention to join celebrity fandom. I have high respect that every celebrity is also a human being.
But I admit there's a little bit of curiosity inside me. One of the first things in my early days as SMAP's fan was to dig deeper from the tip of the iceberg including what was really going on during that year. From both fans, journalists, and experts about the conflict around the world(yeah for some reason smap was well-known only for that alone. The fuck all their overseas acknowledgment being such a waste. why????).
And the results are...chaotic for sure. You will get absolute anxiousness about which one is true cause you almost dive into the red ocean with pieces of information scattered around. (And trust me, it still does to some people up to this day)
But one thing is certain to me, up until now, all the members were treated dirtier than I could've imagined. Being one the most successful boyband in Asia and raising their group with blood and tears... From being an underdog who had poor start to a fucking respectful group amongst the legends.
Wow...and I thought TVXQ - JYJ was enough for me.
With the new story, "201601118" by Osamu Suzuki, my point still stands. It's horrifying how much freedom of expression in Japanese media is restricted in such an extreme way. And how manipulative higher corporate to control media more than the government can.
It's also terrifying even SMAP itself who hold the title of being the vocal and the rebel group within the history of Jhonnys, "lost" to them. (The fuck they didn't get any chance to clear things up. All those things were not from their mouths sometimes irritates me)
It left the deepest scar on all members afterward.
I, for one, am realistic about when will they reunite specifically as fiveâno, six.
... Which could be more than a decade if they want to reunite. It's been what ... 7 years since that year? Nah still too early for them.
(To compare, it took 13 years (1996-2009) for members openly talk about Mori in public. And another 4 years to let tv crew finally broadcast about him in smapxsmap)
Yet I still have confidence in how well the members are right now. Yes, miracles do happen. By the time I posted this, more and more people were aware of SMAP's songs and videos on social media(really, many smap video suddenly gain viewers and more of them got million views).
I think this might be the time that all members are also "aware" of it in their own way to remind the audience about their birthright.
Such as one Mori dared to show the media their strong connection on his helmet(the famous five vibrant colors that create one giant star). And by the time I posted this, Mori stated in the press that he already contacted all members for his comeback as an auto racer since the huge incident last year(2 days before press).
Goro with his almighty move to play their 2005's songs "Tomodachi e~ Say what you will" and "Triangle"(that became major hit again)
Kimura loudly spoke in his concert about the news concluding that staying and singing as Johnny's Idol to protect SMAP's heritage--which he clearly irritated and corrected as their product.
Nakai's talk with Arashi's member, Matsumoto Jun, about SMAP was infamously known to rival Arashi even though in reality both of them clearly wanted to collab together before ended.
Fan report on Shingo's mentioned '5 people trip' from that famous 2013's smaxsmap holiday trip to USJ in his concert due to it was located in the same area.
or Tsuyoshi's congratulatory marriage messages from all members(and also to Shingo as well).
Yeah, it only took miracle for them to be able reunite again. But will it be as same as they did in past? ... Well...
I just believe to their leader in his departure from Jhonnys:
"it's not zero, I don't think it's 100% impossible"
#it's similar to what happen in my country as well (and also a star group of 5 too)#their professionalism is beyond me#almost like they're not from an idol group#their work ethics to respect without blaming each other is rare to these days#to whoever thought their strong mentality from youth to adult is forever in debt#OH YEAH SPEAKING OF NAKAI-SAN...#i must finished your post before i dumped it years laterđ#smap

My Review of Rhythm Tengoku (GBA)
If you play rhythm games, you might have heard of the Rhythm Heaven series. It's a charming rhythm game series that really makes rhythm games accessible to people who aren't necessarily good at them (i.e. me).
Recently, I played the very first game in the series, Rhythm Tengoku. Now, this game was never released outside of Japan. I had to play a fan translation (which was amazing by the way, it's the only one out there if you Google "Rhythm Tengoku fan translation"). Language barrier aside, this game was fantastic, and really holds up well even after the 16+ years since its release.
The games themselves were a lot of fun! Some of them were a little bizarre at first, but they ended up being some of my favorites! Several classic games in the series started in Rhythm Tengoku, like Karate Man, Rhythm Tweezers, and Built to Scale. The songs were so catchy, and I find it hard to get some of them out of my head even the morning after playing.
Playing through the entire game (referred to as "Beat" on The Backloggery) wasn't easy, but it wasn't infuriatingly difficult. That's the problem I've had with rhythm games in the past is they make it so challenging that it's no longer fun to play. I didn't feel like Rhythm Tengoku did this at all! The pacing and progression felt perfect, and I was thrilled to finally finish Remix 8 and watch the credits!
Then I went back through and got the medals for Superb ranks (referred to as "Complete" on The Backloggery). I got about half of the medals just playing through, but going back for the second half was really tough! I assumed since I'd beat the game, it would be easier going back, but nope! There was just as much fun to be had trying for a Superb rank as there was just trying to clear the level. I was pleasantly surprised that the "bonus" challenge/collectathon was so enjoyable! I haven't found too many games that don't feel like pure grinding or teeth-grinding difficulty.
There's also a lot of bonus content unlocked as you collect the medals that I've hardly had time to look at yet (except, of course, talking to the barista!), not to mention practicing for the Perfect ranks! There's so much to do in this game, it's so nice to have a game that's not an insanely long time-sink, or a short thrill. Rhythm Tengoku is somewhere there in the middle where you're glad it's not too long, but you'll always wish there was more to enjoy...
Oh wait, there is! It's a series, after all! There's still Rhythm Heaven on the Nintendo DS, Rhythm Heaven Fever on the Wii, and Rhythm Heaven Megamix on the 3DS! There's a lot of games that make appearances from Rhythm Tengoku, so if these games are anything like the first one, I'll love them just the same!
Thanks for reading! I just finished Rhythm Tengoku and wanted to talk about it really badly, so here I am writing a review the morning after I finished the game! Hope you enjoyed it, and be sure to ask questions and suggest new post ideas in my ask box! Stay safe, stay hydrated, and God bless! ~Alex

FRESHMAN YEAR â IWAIZUMI HAJIME.
â iwaizumi hajime.
‷ genre: college au - fluff / smut
‷ warnings: cursing, mature content and themes, smut, oral (receiving and giving), unprotected sex
‷ word count: 6.2k
â a/n: this was an anon request for a reader trying to sneak off away from iwa the morning after and he ainât having none of that đ
i had no intention of this being so long, but iwa just gets me going aight!!
freshman year of college had given you many things.
an unrivalled expertise in procrastination - avoiding the overwhelming influx of assignments from your professors was second-nature at this point; party now, cry later, right? carpe fucking diem, no? either way, it had also given you a liver which begged for a glass of water, a drop even, anything but the wretched burn of vodka and the copious amounts of iced lattes at three in the morning. and deities forbid your mother ever finding out her daughter lived off of spicy instant ramen that somehow was always on sale at the campus convenience store. you even considered the discounted prices stemmed from the store owners taking pity on you each time you stood before them counting loose change.
yet freshman year of college had also given you a best friend in the form of matsukawa issei. and hanamaki takahiro, since they were a package deal of course. but mattsun had been presented to you on a silver platter.
butt ass naked, just like the day he was brought into this world.
arriving on campus a week before the start of the first semester, the last thing you expected to see was a hunched over figure, bare ass mooning right in front of you, banging on the fragile door of your dorm. shaking out of your stupor, you had all but cussed him out in the corridor, earning more unnecessary attention from other nosy students, before you dragged him by his arm into your room. in the flurry of your attempted rescue, heâd dropped the hand that was holding whatever sliver of dignity he had left. you had even failed to realise how this strange boy was almost a foot taller than you, and rather being eye-to-eye, it was rather eye-to-waist - and you had made the mistake of glancing lower.
âyeah lilâ big mattsun is a looker, right?â you prayed everyday to forget his first words to you. the prayers had yet to be answered, though your initial reaction had made it somewhat alright to think back on.
you had screamed bloody murder, sending mattsun into a frenzied panic, his own screams harmonising yours. then you had cried, furiously rubbing at your eyes, and sobbing about how your eyes would never be the same again. when he had reached out to comfort you, thatâs when you turned on him, jumping upwards to swat at his bony shoulders. after he tumbled over your rug, the two of you halted, eyeing each other before laughing like maniacs.
he left your dorm that day, running off in your pink fluffy robe with plans to meet up later for dinner. when he introduced you to the pink-haired makki - the reason behind mattsunâs nudity at your door, though the specifics were lost - the three of you hit it off like a bunch of crazies.
most days were spent between your dorm and their shared apartment; stress eating over forgotten assignments, binging shitty reality tv shows - the bachelor was just hitting different this season - and pre-gaming a bit too hard before nights out.
it had confused you at first on how, as much as you were over at their apartment, you had yet to meet their other roommate. makki had told you he was a close friend from back home in miyagi, the serious type who spent most of his time training, studying or working; and it was mattsun who had said he was a total mom, âheâs our mommy,â were his exact words, adding to the list of things you wish you could forget.
it was probably around two months into the semester, when youâd finally met their elusive third roommate.
that night mattsun, makki and you were in a rare state of focus, working diligently on your own respective papers, when theyâd nominated you to heat up some frozen pizza to snack on. which is how you found yourself, grumbling, bent at the waist to place the pizza in the oven; ignorant to the jingling of keys, and heavyset footsteps entering the kitchen.
âwell this is something new to come home to.â
you jolted at the sound of the unfamiliar voice, whacking the side of your skull on the edge of the counter in a haste to stand up to your full height. you cursed loudly, hand pressed against the throbbing pain in your head as you turned to glare at the culprit. though that was cut short, alongside your breathing, by the sexiest man alive you had ever laid your eyes on, entering your personal space.
he towered over you, not in the same way as mattsun or makki, but what he lacked in height, he made up for in brawn. your eyes greedily traced his body; the steel gray gym shirt clung to him like a second skin, eight slight dips outlining his abs and his wide chest. broad shoulders blocked your view from everything irrelevant behind him, and you watched, almost in slow motion, as his biceps flexed under the tight confines of his shirt sleeves, to reach out and place his much larger hand over yours. you felt every fibre in your being going into overdrive under his unexpected touch, and all he was doing was checking over the swelled up island on your forehead.
âare you alright, y/n?â your ovaries were quaking at the deep rasp of his voice- and wait, he knows your name? âyou are y/n, right?â he asked, reading the confusion on your face. you nodded absentmindedly, raising your gaze to meet his own.
you groaned inwardly - who gave this man the right to a sexy body and to look this fucking good? taking in the handsome features of his face; wild crop of dark chocolate hair, smooth tanned skin, highlighting the sharp cut of his jaw, and the attractive straight of his nose. his lips were pouty, eyes slanted under shaped brows, olive hues peeking past his long dark lashes to stare at you.
he moved his hand away from the top of yours, the added warmth missed already; and took your lack of reply as a sign to introduce himself and apologise.
âiâm mattsun and makkiâs roommate, iwaizumi hajime. sorry for scaring you.â
you were ready to drag mattsun and makki to hell and back for hiding this fine man- no, greek fucking god, from you all this time. in an attempt to compose yourself and avoid anymore embarrassment, you smiled, dopily, releasing an airy laugh while waving off the apology.
âiâm l/n y/n.â
amusement shifted over his features, a smirk painting over his lips as his eyes creased on the sides. you had to hold on tightly to the reigns forbidding you from openly swooning.
âi know.â he chucked lowly.
you had never wanted the ground to swallow you whole as much as then. the heat you could feel radiating off your cheeks was a clear sign of how embarrassed you were, making a complete fool of yourself in front of the man you were borderline prepared to request to be your future baby daddy. so when mattsun strolled in, casually greeting iwa and poking at the bump on your forehead, you hadnât been more grateful for your best friend.
too bad it wasnât enough to avoid the wrath you unleashed on him and makki later on; a series of kicks to their sides, and their own personal hell of listening to how badly you wanted to be split open on his dick.
thinking you had scared away the gorgeous iwaizumi, you were ready to be avoided at all costs. yet surprisingly, after that night, he was suddenly everywhere.
he joined in on your hangouts with the boys. group study sessions where you usually did more foolery than studying? iwa was there to knock all of you into gear. late night fast food runs to satisfy your cravings? iwa was driving, kicking mattsun and makki to the back of his jeep when theyâd try to steal your designated seat next to him. and the parties he used to avoid? there he was stuck in the chaos of it all, holding your drink and glaring at anyone who dared to approach the two of you.
of course, iwaâs sudden involvement in your life hadnât gone unnoticed by mattsun and makki - the two of you becoming their favourite victims to tease. and when his threats and your fists were no longer able to get them off your backs, iwa had taken to spending time with you, without them.
you liked to call them not-dates, even though it was just to parry the feelings rapidly developing for him.
going to the coffee shop you two often frequented so he could buy your favourite drink while you ranted about your shitty group presentation, was a not-date. taking him to the drive-in godzilla screenings every friday for five weeks, because you knew they were his favourite movies, was a not-date. him making you dinner every other night because your mom found out about your insane intake of instant ramen and blasted you during a video call while he was over, was a not-date.
as expected after months of this going on, your two best friends constantly called you out for your not-dates being actual dates. even one of your classmates took to informing you each time your âbody builder boyfriendâ was waiting outside for you. but ignorance was bliss, and you were sure iwa didnât feel that way towards you. at least that was until the day you had met oikawa tooru.
you noticed that iwa had been more than a bit apprehensive, as each day passed bringing his best friendâs return to japan closer and closer, though he wouldnât explain why. yet it seemed it was over nothing, since you and oikawa got along great, even if he did comment every other second on you and iwaâs closeness. meeting the pretty setter had been like placing the missing puzzle piece in the dynamic with your favourite boys.
after a loud lunch with the four boys, oikawa had pulled you in for a tight hug as iwa was about to drop you off to your afternoon class for that day.
âiwa-chan talks about you all the time, y/n-chan, but heâs a dum-dum so forgive him for being slow, alright!â he had whispered in your ear, before pulling away with a mischievous glint in his mocha coloured eyes. âiwa-chan you sly dog! keeping y/n all to yourself, hmm? maybe i should just take her back with me to argentina- wait, iwa-chan, iâm sorry! donât chase me! gah!â
after that, you started to accept the fact that maybe what was once simply physical attraction, had turned into a deep affection for iwaizumi. the only issue was that, like oikawa said, iwa was a dum-dum, and he didnât mention anything from what oikawa said that day or his extreme reaction to oikawaâs teasing. hell, you didnât even know if he even realised that the way he treated you, which was very much a stark contrast to how he treated others, was him subconsciously wooing you.
so the not-dates continued, and you inevitably fell deeper and deeper for sweet, oblivious iwa.
the semesters flew by, it was finally the end of freshman year; exams completed, life instantly renewed, and you were ready to attend the shit show of an end-of-year finisher tonight. the plans were for you to drive over to the boysâ apartment, pre-game like never before, and then head off to the party. so you were surprised when your phone pinged with a string of messages from the group chat.
stepping out of the elevator, the click clack of your laced-up stilettos echoed in the tiled corridor, as you made your way towards the boysâ apartment. the better part of you was suspicious of mattsun and makkiâs sudden change of plans; though it was shot to the back of your mind as you raised a manicured hand to tap against their door.
shifting around a bit, you didnât have to wait long before the door was yanked open.
ây/n.â iwa greeted you with a lopsided grin.
you couldnât prevent the gasp that escaped your glossy lips at the sight of him.
an arm was held above his head, bicep flexing as his hand rested on top of the door frame, the other scratching the back of his thick neck. the rich scent of his cinnamon cologne, mixed with the musk of his aftershave wafted around you; as your eyes followed the droplet from his damp hair, sliding down the side of his jaw on to his bare shoulders. now, shirt-wearing iwa was incredible, with his collection of monotone coloured shirts that always seemed a size too small; but shirtless iwa? had you frothing at the mouth.
you dared your eyes to move lower, skirting over the delicious sight of his bare chest, and willing yourself to commit every stretch of him to memory. the taut muscles of his stomach tightened as you drank them in, the deep v indents cut around his hips, and your eyes followed over the fuzzy trail of dark hair that disappeared underneath the waistband of his jeans that sat dangerously low.
and while your mouth ran dry, you couldnât say the same thing about the situation between your legs; pressing your thighs together to alleviate some of the pressure.
âiwa, uh...the boys...said to come over, change of plans.â was all you were able to choke out. physically you were standing before him, but mentally you were writhing under him.
âi know, they left a while ago.â he replied, the corner of his pretty mouth tugged upwards. âiâm almost ready to go, come inside.â
he already took up the entire space of the door frame, and when he only moved a bit to the side, you were forced to slip through the tiniest of gaps; shivering as your shoulder grazed against his own. standing in the middle of the hallway, you heard the soft click of the door closing, before iwa turned to face you.
you could feel the intoxicating heat radiating off his body spread across your own. the two of your were so close in each otherâs space, chest to chest, and even in heels, you still only reached just under his jaw. when you glanced up to look at him, you swore you had caught his olive eyes lingering on the exposed skin of your breasts, before they moved to meet yours.
something different swirled in the depths of iwaâs eyes, something you had never witnessed before. something kin to a wolf staring at its lamb; a hunger so strong, so...fuck...
âyou look beautiful, y/n.â
the compliment strikes you in surprise, feeling the flush rise up in your face, and the fluttering in your stomach. you could feel the pounding of your heart beat, drumming in your ears; watching his adamâs apple bob slowly, as he moved his hand to brush away the hair covering your neck. naturally you leaned into his touch.
âiwaâŠ?â you whispered out to him in slight confusion.
âthis dress on you...driving me crazy,â he starts, before cutting himself off with a groan. âsorry, y/n, i-i think i overstepped.â he tries to move his hand away from your neck, but you wrap your fingers around his wrist.
oikawaâs voice ran through your mind in a fleeting memory- â...forgive him for being slow, alright!â
âare you drunk, iwa?â
âwhat? no...i havenât...iâm sober.â
âthatâs good then.â
ây/n? good for what?â
âitâs good because then you can show me.â your fingers reach out to flitter over the ridges of his stomach. âwonât you show me how my dress drives you crazy, iwa?â
the surge of courage coursing through your veins, to be able to call him out like you had wanted to for months and seasons, was all it took for iwa to lose the composure he always kept up around you.
without hesitation, the big hand on your neck tugs you right into him; tits pushed together against his chest, as he dips his head to press his lips against yours.
the kiss is far from simple; thereâs no room for it, months of pining wonât allow sweet and slow. your hand slides over his broad shoulder, to pull at the dark tufts at the nape of his neck; mouth slanting over his, tongues brushing against each other sensually. you explore his mouth, tasting him, while his hands squeeze over the curves of your body, eliciting a moan once he grabs at the fullness of your ass. you push up against him further, the hard tent in his pants straining against your belly.
âmore, iwa, please...need more.â you pant against his lips.
âi got you baby, donât worry.â he kisses you again, slower, with just as much passion. bending at the knees, and hiking the end of your dress up under your ass, he grabs at the silky underside of your thighs to lift you up into him - ankles locked at the bottom of his spine. heâs carrying you like nothing, and the amusing thought of his arms not only being for show flies through your head before youâre gasping.
the feeling of being pulled flush against him, the damp heat of your clothed pussy grinding against his bare stomach, has you keening for more. he groans loudly at the feeling of your slick coating his skin, and you jostle about as he begins walking through the hallway and towards his bedroom. as your sucking gently on his tongue, he carries you into his room, kicking the door closed behind him.
once his knees hit the edge of his mattress, he gently lowers you to lay down before him on your back. he hovers over you, the lewd swirling of your tongues has your head spinning before he moves from your mouth to latch onto your neck.
âah, iwa- fuck,â you moan as his teeth grazed your sweet spot. he rolls his hips into you, spreading your legs to accommodate him more, while tugging at the ribbons of your heels. âwhat about...the party?â
sitting up from you, he grips your legs, sliding you right into him. through heavy lidded eyes, you watch as he takes in your disheveled appearance, a smirk taking over his features.
âfuck the party.â his large palms work the straps of your dress down, exposing your perfect tits; he groans at the sight, leaning down to take a pebbled nipple into his hot mouth. âthis night is for me and you, baby.â
you werenât necessarily a morning person, so living in the dorms, had been a relatively easy decision to make. you had a room to yourself, away from trees allowing a nice view of the campus grounds, and subsequently circumventing the annoying chirping of nested birds. you even added blackout curtains to block out the morning sun.
so when you were woken up by the itching burn of the sunrise on your stomach and your ears ringing with incessant twittering, you groaned loudly.
burying your face deeper into the fluffy pillow under your head, you were squirming under the heavy weight resting over half your body; irritation growing with your inability to get comfortable. peeking an eye open, blinking away the sleep clouding your vision, you took in the sight of a sleeping iwaizumi snuggled between the valley of your breasts. as you became more aware of your body and its surroundings, you felt the panic settling in.
as if he could sense your consciousness, the arm wrapped around your waist gave you a squeeze as he mumbled incoherently. âmmm, baby...y/n...feels goodâŠâ his hand slid down the side of your thigh, goosebumps following his fingertips, before it rested on your inner thigh; and he was drifting back to sleep.
you had to shove your fist against your mouth to stop yourself from screaming.
part of you was in denial that last night had actually happened. you, l/n y/n, had spent the night with the iwaizumi hajime - man of your literal dreams, who you had fallen so deeply for. and you had spent it having sex.
raw. nasty. passionate. earth-shattering. sex.
âfuck.â you whispered to yourself. âhow could i be so stupid?â you were cursing yourself internally, certain you had fucked up everything you had built in your friendship with iwa - there was honestly no coming back from what transpired between you two.
and with your fight-or-flight response triggered, there was only one thing for you to do right now - get the fuck out of there.
maneuvering your body from underneath iwaâs big arm, without waking him up was a feat in itself. doing so with the way your muscles ached with each motion was on another level. sliding one foot after the other out from under his charcoal bed sheets, you pushed yourself up to sit.
looking behind you at iwaâs sleeping figure, you felt yourself swooning. half lying on his side, with his cotton sheets draped over his waist, you couldnât help but admire him. his mouth was slightly open, his big arms cuddling the pillow you were laying on, and the smooth skin of his tanned back were tainted with red, angry marks. gulping audibly, your eyes dragged down to the prominent outline of his half-hard cock.
pushing himself up by his forearms, the desperation swimming in his eyes was begging for your touch. you grazed your teeth across his chest, biting at his hardened nipples teasingly, before moving further down from his lap while your tongue drew circles around the dips of his taut abdomen.
ây/n, donât tease me.â
you smirked at his order, sucking on his skin and pressing wet kisses on his hip bones, before leaning back. he watched you eagerly as your dainty fingers tugged at his belt buckle clumsily, lifting himself up he could slip out of his jeans.
âcanât wait to have your cock in my mouth.â you cooed, eyes starstruck at the tent in his boxer briefs, wet patch dampening at its peak. hooking your finger under the waistband, you hastily yanked the briefs down to free him, his hard cock slapping against his stomach. âfuck youâre so big, haji.â
he was easily the biggest youâve seen, ever had the chance of pleasuring - so thick, so long, and so fucking beautiful.
you didnât bother to dwell on the taste of his name on your lips, when you were too busy tasting the essence leaking from his angry, swollen tip. you could barely wrap your hands around the base of his cock, as you pressed a sweet kiss on the head, pre cum coating your lips, before taking it in your hot mouth, suckling gently.
the groan he releases is animalistic, and his hips buck upwards to shove his cock deeper in your mouth. pressing your hand at his navel to keep him steady, you continue sucking harshly, almost painfully, before lowering your head down. his cock slides down your throat, inch by inch, as tears prick at your eyes and you can feel your drool drop on the thumb massaging his balls. he blocked your airways, but fuck breathing when the look on his face when you take all of him in your mouth like a good girl is so, so perfect.
steadily bobbing your head, you feel every inch of him down your throat; tongue swirling around his length, and he twitches every time you trace the thick vein on the underside of his cock. you suck faster and harder as iwa reaches a hand out to feel around your throat.
âfuck, baby, i can feel me in your throat. so fucking good, just like that.â he hisses out, choking up when you begin to hum. âmmm fuck- ah, shit! gonna cum baby! fuck!â
yanking away your hand you hadnât realised was brushing around your neck as the vision of him disappeared from your thoughts, you stood up, a bit unsteady on your feet at first. you could still taste him, as you ran your tongue over the hood of your mouth.
knowing you were getting distracted, you shook your head gently, pushing your hair away from your face. you needed your clothes, so glancing around, taking note of the strips of clothing scrambled in his room - your eyes caught the baby pink of your lace panties hanging from his bedside lamp.
one second you were swallowing his cock down your throat, and the next he had torn the rest of your dress off and had you laid out in front of him.
iwa made fast work in manhandling you the way he wanted. stretching his legs straight beside you, he pulled you right into him; you gasped as he lifted you up by your waist, practically folding you with the underside of your thighs tucked under the bulk of his arms, knees by your shoulders, and your lower back pressed right against his heaving chest. he was hunched over you, wrapping you fully in his embrace, while you were spread out right in his face.
âyou soaked right through your pretty panties, baby.â leaning down, he presses his nose right into your clothed heat, making you squirm, as he breathes you in. âfuck, you smell so sweet, i wanna eat you up real good.â
âi-iwa.â you whined, staring at him through heavy-lidded eyes as you pressed the side of your face into the mattress.
âno, no baby. when weâre like thisâŠâ he starts, reaching a hand to tear the thin, and expensive, material right off of you. before you have a chance to complain, his hot breath blows on your drooling pussy, tight hole clenching around nothing in anticipation. â...youâll say my name.â
âh-hajime, please, haji.â you beg, feeling embarrassed at how exposed you were. he could see everything, do anything to you as he pleased, and you would just let him. so when he presses his heavy tongue flat against your slit, licking all the way up to your throbbing clit; you canât help but dig your finger nails into his toned calves beside you. âah- yes! mmm...haji, oh-!â
sucking on your clit, he digs his fingers into your thighs, deeper and deeper in response to your whiny moans for more. he hums against you, mumbling about how sweet you taste, how much he canât get enough of your flavour, and you can feel him getting hard again - grinding against your back. he slides his tongue between your folds, slurping you up so good, that itâs no surprise youâre teetered over the edge.
âhaji! oh, oh fuck! ah yes!â the waves of you cumming hits hard as your pussy gushes all over the lower half of his face. âdaddy! s-so good, f-fuck!â
still up in the clouds from your high, calling him daddy flies over your head, but isnât missed by iwa. you watch, dazed, as he moves away from your pussy, a lewd string of silver connects his mouth to you, his chin glistening with your juices. reaching around your trembling thighs, his thumbs spread your lips so he can get an ever better view of your sopping cunt.
âi knew youâd be my good baby and say my name.â he grins, before leaning back down to you and delving his tongue right in your pussy, tongue-fucking you slowly and massaging your slick walls, his nose nudging your sensitive clit. ânow come again in daddyâs mouth.â
heat pooled between your legs as you stretched, ignoring the iwa-sized hand prints painted purple across your thighs, while you thought about him and the magic his mouth performed. waddling to his side table - you examined the remnants of your panties; the pretty pink lace was all but shredded, and you hopelessly threw the material in the trash.
âfucking hell, iwa.â the glare you aimed his way, softened drastically as you took in his sleeping figure. sighing, you turn and spot what may be your dress halfway under his bed.
shuffling over, you crouch, the burn in your thighs making itself even more known and forcing your eyes to shut in a grimace.
the way iwaâs cock filled your little cunt felt while you rode him was incredible. nothing could ever compare to the way he was ruining you from the inside out, and you were sure nothing would ever come close. his big hands palmed your ass while you were bouncing up and down on his length, your belly jutting out every time he was sheathed inside you, your thighs tremored each time they slapped against his.
âfuck, daddy! feels...mmmâŠwanna cum, please!â your tongue was lolling out of your mouth, as fucked yourself on his cock, digging crescent moon shapes into his shoulder blades. one of his hands remained firmly on your ass, while fingers of the other reached around to pinch your clit.
with a scream you came undone, creaming all over his still-hard cock, and collapsing forward onto his sweaty chest. you whimpered, while he continued to fuck up into your used pussy. despite the tears threatening to fall down your flushed cheeks; you mewled for more.
âshh, baby,â iwa hummed into your neck, you could feel his grin against your skin, peppering kisses as you leaned into him. âdaddyâs gonna make you feel even better.â
his thick arms wrapped almost painfully in a death grip around your exhausted body, as he locked his legs and angled himself into your pussy; fucking deep inside you, and hitting your cervix with each stroke. you came again, harder, legs quivering as your insides spasmed; this time joined by his orgasm, as the mixture of his cum was stuffed inside you.
your eyes shot open, breathing slightly laboured. it hadnât even been a day, only mere hours, and the way iwa had taken over your mind was slowly driving you insane. dropping to your knees, you reached out to grab at your dress, having to slide the top half of your body under the bed.
that sound of iwaâs big hand slapping your ass while he pounded into you from behind, rung in your ears, but the sting and the pleasure was all your fucked out brain could comprehend. he was absolutely relentless with his too-big cock, tearing into you.
on all fours, you arched your back more to accommodate him. each thrust had him bottoming out in your already leaking pussy.
âfuck baby, just like that, mmm- push back into me.â
everything just felt too fucking good. the harsh pace of his strokes had you blabbering, moaning about how good he felt into the mattress.
âdonât stop! oh fuck, please donât stop haji!â
but you felt his pace begin to slow just as you were about to climax, and when you tried to move back on him his grip on your waist tightened. with ease, he flipped you on your back, almost skewering you on his cock still inside you. hooking the backs of your knees over his elbows as he leaned over you, his full weight folding your body underneath him, as he wove his fingers with yours into the mattress above your head.
âlook at my fat cock sliding into that sweet cunt, baby.â iwa grunts. his arms strained, holding his weight up from crushing you, as he teased your sloppy hole. âfuck, you take me so good, baby.â
you whimpered, looking at the connection between the two of you. with a roll of his hips, you watched as his cock slid into your silky walls, the lewd sound of you squelching with every stroke had you arching up, wanting him deeper in your tummy as you gushed around him.
unlike before when his thrusts were rough, filled with raw feral passion; it was now slow, sensual and so fucking sexy. and when you met his gaze, as he continued to grind into you, gripping your fingers tightly between his; it felt as though he was trying to tell you something.
that intense emotion swirling deep in his olive gaze was searing, burning through you from the inside out. everything unsaid between the two of you. but soon enough your orgasm hit you harder than ever, pleasure electric under your heated skin.
âhaji, haji, haji- oh, fuck yes!â you chanted his name like a prayer.
ây/n, baby, fuck i love you-â he moans out, strokes becoming sloppy. âwanted this...for so long- shit, iâm cumming baby!â
snatching your dress from under the bed, you sat on your knees at the foot of his bed, thinking over everything you just wanted to ignore for the time being. you almost wish you could forget he had told you he loved you. how could you possible believe those three words while he was at the pinnacle of his pleasure?
suddenly the shrill ringtone of iwaâs phone blasted next to him. scrambling to your feet, you snatched the phone; fingers mashing the screen to cut off the sound before he woke up.
âwhat?â you hissed, holding the phone to your ear as you glanced at iwa. you thanked whichever gods were watching over you that he was still fast asleep.
âoho? y/n-chan? is that you~?â nevermind, the gods were out for you.
âtooru?â
âthe one and only!â you winced at the smug teasing in his tone. âi was hoping to speak to iwa-chan, but i heard he was a naughty boy last night!â
âuh...what?â
âas in i literally heard him, and you, last night when i came back to the apartment!â oikawa recalls in a sing-song voice, rambling on about how he was here to surprise the two of you. âi always knew our dear iwa-chan had a daddy kink!â
placing the phone between your ear and your shoulder, you attempted to fit your dress over you, while oikawa continued on his spiel of how it took way too fucking long for the two of you to do something about the sexual tension. you had no chance to even peep a word in.
âdamn baby, now this view i could definitely get used to.â
you almost shrieked, bumping into iwaâs naked body, and tripping over the dress dropped around your ankles. you had no idea heâd woken up, sneaking right up behind you in all his naked fucking glory; forcing you to try your hardest not to eye his cock standing at full attention.
âis that iwa-chan?!â oikawa all but screams into the phone. iwa raises a questioning brow, hearing his best friend on the other line. âtell him to be good and wrap it up! no glove, no love!â
you had no business feeling embarrassed at the brat kingâs words, while iwa snatched his phone away from you.
âtoo late for that, shittykawa.â oikawaâs screeches are the last thing you hear before iwa ends the call.
you almost dare to chuckle at the thought of oikawaâs reaction; but falter under iwaâs stare. itâs the same look he gives mattsun or makki when theyâre in trouble, but itâs mixed in with the same scorching look from last night, and you shift on your feet nervously, wrapping your arms across your chest.
âgoing somewhere?â iwa gruffs out, the raspiness of his morning voice had you tugging your bottom lip between your teeth.
âum, homeâŠ?â the uncertainty was clear in your voice, especially as he scowled when you mentioned leaving. âiwa, i-â
âoh so itâs iwa now?â he cuts you off, taking a step closer into your space. âi liked it when you called me haji, though daddy follows closely after that.â
you gasp when a thick arm snakes around your waist, pulling you up against him. his other hand caresses your cheek so sweetly, before he grabs your jaw to tilt your face up to his, taking your lips with his own. the kiss is gentle, soft lips moving against your own as his tongue brushes yours sweetly. youâve fully melted in his hold, eyes still closed when he breaks the kiss.
âi meant what i said last night, y/n.â he whispers against your mouth. âi love you.â your eyes shoot open, and you can feel your heart trying to beat itself out of your chest.
âi-i love you too.â you murmur back, and the smile he gives you has you ready to combust right before him. after all this time, a party had been the reason you finally admitted your feelings for him.
ânow come back to bed.â you squeal as he lifts you up and over his shoulder, the grip he takes on your inner thigh is ticklish making you squirm about. âiâm gonna cuddle you back to sleep, and then when we wake up iâm gonna take you out on a date, okay baby?â
you giggle as he tosses you back on his fluffy mattress, dropping himself right on top of you and nuzzling his face into the dip between your neck and shoulder. running your hands softly over the muscled panes of his back, one reaches out to thread your fingers in the tufts of dark hair at his nape.
âokay, haji.â
freshman year had given you a lot of things, but iwaizumi hajime was the best thing yet. you couldnât wait to see what sophomore year had in store for you.

Yugioh S5 Ep 20: Pharaohâs Cool New Trick
Digging my way through quite a pile of commission work (funny how these things only come all at once or not at all), nearing the light at the end of the tunnel, was looking forward to some free time to catch up on my many little side projects when I was asked to take off for a weekend to do some cat-sitting to which I would NEVER say no to a cat, so like...Rip this blog I guess, we only update like once a week nowadays, but what do you do?
Thatâs right, play Puzzles and Dragons! The only phone game worth paying any attention to! Where they just released Pegasus on their Yugioh Collab and he looks pretty great!
So Iâm just gonna take a second for some art appreciation, because the Puzzles and Dragons art team is just A++++ honestly, and yes, I did pull 13 times to get a Pegasus in my monster box, and yes, he is a completely insane team leader that is absolutely broken when paired with Yugi (the numbers are so satisfying) but...look at him. He looks so good!
(also I finally got Joey Wheeler, and so now my gatcha cravings are settled. And, donât worry, I play this game so much that I was there during Christmas when they offered like a bajillion stones for free so I didnât actually use real money on this.)
Now PAD also released a Weevil and Rex, and I donât know why, and neither does the art team because they still look pretty good but in comparison to all the mains, they sure do looks like just some shorty guys in some casuals.
though I gotta admit, I want to learn how the hell this art team does swooshy effects, because man, that would make my art so much better to just have flames violently exploding out of all my art. Why am I not doing that more often? I have the technology.
anyway, I didnât bother trying to pull them. Maybe Iâll accidentally pull them when they eventually release a Duke Devlin. (also, RIP to the fact that Roland will probably never be in Puzzles and Dragons but like...I can only send them so many polite letters covered in stickers pretending Iâm some 10 year old child and writing in my broken Hiragana âRoland in PAD?â. Thems the breaks. (They also might not remember who Roland is.))
Shoutouts to the card that Weevil is holding that is censoring this nipple on the booby spider, PS.
So because this is not actually a Puzzles and Dragons blog, and itâs been ten eons since I regularly updated so I could remember episode to episode...where the hell were we?
Thatâs right, weâre on an island now. This showâs wonderful obsession with evil islands (and spoiler, this is one of the few Yugioh Islands that doesnât explode at the end. Mostly because Kaiba isnât here to do it or this place would be cinder)
(read more island stuff under the cut)
Anyway, after announcing âhey guys! Screw islands!â Yugi immediately collapses and without any warning.
Apparently the armor is a big ol parasite, which is something that Yugi is so used to at this point that he refuses to admit that this is a problem. Just normal Muto stuff, refusing to tell anyone that he has a serious illness going on underneath that giant mass of hair.
(the sailor moon vibes coming off this weird orb energy)
Sort of feels like a call back to S1 when Yugi was clearly possessed and everyone else was like âHe acting weird to you?â except itâs S5 and everyone has learned to never trust Yugi when he says heâs fine and they are responding like he is about to die. Which is correct.
Outside of the cave falls this scroll that is...glowing, I guess. So they open it up and get a bunch of hieroglyphs that give them the âriddle of lightâ and like youknow...itâs riddle stuff.
Theyâre doing this riddle for âwings.â And itâs like...everyoneâs monster here has a set of wings or an ability to fly. Every single monster except for I dunno, flaming swordsman? Hell, Yugi himself had two sets of wings when he fused with Dark Magician (which was weird, and I still donât like to think about what technically was going on there.) But we have to go and get ourselves even more wings.
Weirdly, Joey turns to Tea and does something that in any other show would be completely normal. He was like âyou want to stay here with Yugi, donât you?â and it was the first time Joey has ever actually addressed the fact that Tea and Yugi are close. Uncharted territory. I was amazed at the amount of casual shipping that is happening here. Itâs almost like a normal ass relationship.
So the boys decide to go off, and be boys and tackle this themselves. And they shouldnât have, because Tea is smart for this group, and also has the only healing spell.
Like if youâre playing D+D you wouldnât typically leave your only healer behind. Just saying.
Also like...Grandpa Muto went with them? I guess heâd have to since heâs the translator but also...kind of weird to leave your grandson dying in a cave, but maybe thatâs just the Muto lifestyle.
Do not be fooled by my caps, no one has addressed the Bakura in the puzzle for 3 seasons. Iâm starting to think this show will never address the Bakura in the puzzle. Which honestly, that would be hilarious if they made a big deal out of that plot point and then couldnât use it in the end.
And speaking of plot points that kind of come out of nowhere and donât make full sense with the continuity of the show--Joey has regressed back to the 4th grade.
Hey show? What?
So like if you love Joey, this is not the arc for you, because this arc he is reduced to a Himbo and nothing else. Straight up didnât know what an echo is, but is very strong and pretty, I guess.
This inevitably happens with any TV show becuase different people make different parts, and Iâve brought up before that sometimes it feels like some teams only have loose post-it notes of what any character should be like at any given point (ESPECIALLY with Seto Kaibaâs timeline) but like...
...Personally Iâm mot so fond of this interpretation of Joey, kind of ignores Joeyâs best traits, and makes Tristan look way too smart in comparison (and like I always pinned Tristan to be the Himbo of the group, but maybe itâs because they give Tristan so little else to do?)
And like donât get me wrong, Joeyâs a dumbass a lot of the time and needs to get corrected by his pals...but...to the point he doesnât know what an echo is? Heâs a dumbass in a High School student sort of way, youknow?
Anyway, they get down to this big ravine, and they have to destroy this stone while the light passes over it. Kind of feels like a Breath of the Wild shrine quest, actually. In fact, I think Breath of the Wild recycled the shadow/sunlight pathing quest like 4 or 5 times. (I love Breath of the Wild to death but boy did they run out of ideas at the end there.)
They have to fight a glass monster and itâs kind of like...do you know the game Balls 3D? probably not, but it looked like a bunch of random shapes stuck together like a 90âČs animation. They basically went to war with shapes.
Pure Himbo energy, has several pokemon, but punches for his pokemon instead of using them. A power move if I ever saw one.
Youknow that would make pokemon a lot more interesting if you could like throw out your pikachu, and then choose to just physically run up to your opponents Eevee and sock it in the jaw. Raise of hands--I know you all would love a version of pokemon like that. Let Ash Ketchum punch a Ratata.
Bro has informed me that Ash does do something like this in the anime. But Iâm not talking about the anime, Iâm talking about the video game. Give me the option to physically combat my rival. This is what I want, Pokemon.
They discover a way to break the monolith, and the show thinks weâre like actually 7 years old (because the show is Y7, although I forget because it deals with so many dark themes) so the show is going to hold on to this puzzle for a while...just to fill time. And itâs fine because we gotta switch over to Pharaoh anyway.
Yami has this dream again. He attempts to fuse with Dark magician to overcome the dream, but alas, he is still not strong enough.
Yugi wakes up in this murky cave while Tea is out washing out like...some rag? (heâs also still got a rag, so I guess multiple rags were required for how sweaty Yugi is.)
Yugi says âI feel like Iâm a new man!â a lot in this episode, and every time he calls himself a man like heâs some sort of adult itâs very funny to me.
And then this plot lore dropped.
I mean I guess inevitably it had to happen...
But man, end of an era. It was freakin hilarious while it lasted: that Pharaoh refused to read ancient Egyptian because itâs like 2002 and he is a High Schooler living in Japan and he actually doesnât WANT to resolve the mystery of the puzzle. Maybe the people who made this arc donât know about how in S2 and S3, the fact Pharaoh couldnât read Marikâs back tatt was like...a really big issue. He couldnât read the God card, he couldnât even read that massive tablet that read âHEY PHARAOH THIS IS LITERALLY YOUâ. KAIBA had to tell him how to read the God card for him. Freakin Seto âMagic is a lieâ Kaiba had to tell him how to use the God Card because Pharaoh couldnât read it.
But like...Pharaoh finally gave in at some point after the world was devoured by the Leviathan, and before Kaiba finished building Kaibaland (which was already built in S1 but wtv)
The timelines on this show have always been a mishmash...but this one is just like...
...show are you trying to convince me that at any point in this show after season Zero, Pharaoh had any idea what he was doing? Did he sap that brain energy straight out of Joey Wheeler so he could do this?
Wow.
(secretly hoping he forgets how to read Egyptian after this arc is over and the show goes back to the other development team)
Pharaohs reasoning is that, if this is the riddle of the light.....
....then where is the riddle of darkness????????????
and when Tea was like âPharaoh that is not even remotely logic. Omg itâs so bright outside, lets go back to gross cave.â and Pharaoh was like âTea! You got it!â and she was like âWhat the hell are you talking about?â
Not gonna lie, I saw the Orichalcos green, and I got concerned.
Anyway, Yugi gets very frustrated and was like âugh, lets go save em. Theyâre gonna die (again.)â and marches down there as if he didnât pass out an hour ago.
And he fuses with Dark Magician again while everyone else (including his grandpa) was like âYugi are you freakin kidding me? The suit freakin kills you omg! Tea you had one freakin job!â
And then we get the plot twist that...I mean it makes sense but it was choreographed in a confusing way.
And out of no where this guy shows up again:
So this mysterious man shows up and says âIf you donât succeed you have to live here foreverâ which...nice...that would probably save the world a lot of problems if Yami got locked away and took his OP puzzle with him. And then this man also says âif you do succeed you become VERY POWERFULâ and Yami was like. â...â
This whole episode had a theme to it, where Tristan and Joey were trying to prove that they could do things on their own and without Yugiâs help. And honestly...felt a little bit misplaced. Yamiâs the same guy who murdered Yugi last season with the Orichalcos so like...
...I mean he is probably more reliable than Tristan who once died and turned into a robot monkey for 10ish episodes.
and then they flew into a glowing door.
Folks, this was wild to look at.
This is wild.
And at this point I closed Photoshop and thought I was done. But then I looked at my timeline on the video and was like...wait...thereâs more?
and Iâm really glad I kept watching because it went back to Alex, who...is apparently just still at those steps in this haunted ass Pyramid.
Now weâre watching Yugioh.
I forgot for a second when they turned Joey into a Himbo and made Pharaoh literate, but weâre back. I mean...
...look at the liner art on this adult man.
So...I posit the question...has Alex spent the last 2-3 episodes doing nothing but applying eyeliner to his face in the dark? Because he absolutely has. And honestly, the vibe of being in a spooky haunted pyramid with barely any light, just applying eyeliner down the edge of your face...thatâs a Yugioh vibe, if I ever saw one.
This arc is wild. Anyway, next episode we do even more fetch quests and riddles? Just going to guess now that we probably will.
(and for those new here, this is a link so you can read them from the top. Which, since weâre in S5, means you got like...hours of Yugioh content to read through. Enjoy the rewards of my weird hobby.)

Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6
Back to the second game we go for The Return of the Great Departed Soul! (Part one, this is another two-parter case)
Episode 2-3: The Return of the Great Departed Soul
So now, chronologically, six months have passed since The Unspeakable Story. Susato returned to Japan at the end of the first game and hasn't returned yet. Ryu was reprimanded for all the perjury and the questionable McGilded defense, so he had his right to stand in court revoked for now and instead had to focus on studying English law some more. He's done so quite patiently and now he feels he's ready to return. He just needs to get Stronghart's permission first. Meanwhile, the Great Exhibition is happening in Hyde Park, pulling in visitors and scientists from all over the world. Exciting! (S)Holmes hands Ryu a newspaper with an article on the exhibition, talking about how the brighter things shine, the darker the shadows cast behind them. By now, Ryu is fluent enough in (S)Holmes speak to know this means he should flip over the newspaper. There, we find an article of an entirely different sort.
So not only was Van Zieks apparently attacked, Ryu shows horror and concern at the notion. No hard feelings from our wholesome boy! (S)Holmes explains that London's finest criminals often find ways to get acquittals from trials through bribery, threats, sham witnesses... We saw this in McGilded, of course, so we know all too well how dangerous that can get. But since the Reaper and his curse are immune to such tactics, when a ringleader or fellow ends up being 'taken' by the curse, retaliation can occur. So it's established that this isn't the first time Van Zieks has been attacked by a group of thugs. Fortunately, Van Zieks is an âaccomplished combatantâ who doesn't take these attacks lying down. Unfortunately, the thugs were carrying guns this time. Uhoh.
This warms my heart, it really does. Van Zieks has been a terrible scumbag, but Ryu doesn't think he's gotten his comeuppance at all. He's genuinely concerned for this man and intends to find out more about his condition. So since he was planning to meet with Stronghart and ask for attorney permission anyway, it's the perfect opportunity to also ask about Van Zieks! Iris decides to tag along because she wants to visit the Great Exhibition. Let's shove the newspaper in Stronghart's face as soon as the game allows it.
The phrasing of ânumber one prosecutorâ is interesting, but then... We never learn of any other (living) veteran prosecutors in this country, so of course Van Zieks would be number one. Stronghart says there's no need for concern; Van Zieks would not be so easily dispatched. Street ruffians are no match for him, since he's a very capable fighter. Seems like that sword he carries around isn't just for show after all. As for why he was attacked this time... Well, a month ago Van Zieks prosecuted a leader of a criminal organization. Nice to know he didn't just return to retirement and instead got back to work like a normal person without cherrypicking his cases based on what Ryu's doing. The defendant was acquitted, no doubt thanks to large sums of money being shifted around behind the scenes, but he still met a dramatic end just yesterday during an accident at the Great Exhibition. The man in question was Odie Asman, and the one now being detained on suspicion of murder without a defense attorney is Professor Albert Harebrayne. Albert's case has just been assigned to Ryu, so we're sure to find out more about Asman as we go. As as final touch, Ryu asks Stronghart why he continues to use Van Zieks as a prosecutor. Since the criminals are becoming fearful of the curse and attacking him, it's dangerous to Van Zieks himself. Stronghart explains that he has two reasons: Firstly, Van Zieks is the best prosecutor in the capital, bar none. And secondly, any deaths that have occurred outside the courtrooms after his trials have nothing to do with him. (S)Holmes alluded to the same thing, saying that Van Zieks had a rock-hard alibi for each and every mysterious death.
âSo he will continue to prosecute on behalf of the Crown. ...Unless he wishes otherwise, of course.â With that, Stronghart admits he needs to get going since he's already 11 hours late to his next appointment (fsdkjfls). Ryu asks where he might be able to find Van Zieks and is told to head to his office. So even after being told that Van Zieks is just fine, Ryu is still concerned and wants to discuss the matter with the man himself. Let's gooo! Naturally, the first thing out of Van Zieks's mouth when he catches Ryu and Iris in his office is to wonder what the heck they're doing here.
So there's several things of interest in the office, with the game automatically addressing the biggest one: Van Zieks has an apprentice now! It's a mysterious, rigid dude wearing a hood and a mask who is absolutely not familiar to us, nope. We don't know him. Gosh, what a mystery. Van Zieks doesn't seem to know who he is either, instead just referring to him as his apprentice and nothing more.
Ryu sees this as an opening to ask about the attack on the Reaper that was in the newspaper. Van Zieks admits that he too is very interested in the true identity of the Reaper. âAssuming, that is, such a fabled fiend genuinely inhabits our great courtrooms.â The conversation halts for a moment so we can examine the office and this is the best opportunity for humanizing traits we've gotten so far, so LET'S DO IT! The enormous portrait in the back is the first thing to peek at.
Iris says whoever painted it exaggerated the subject's handsomeness, which in turn is reminiscent of Napoleon ordering the painter to make him look more attractive. That's super vain and not an attractive quality in a person at all. I laughed the whole way through that bit of dialogue and Van Zieks, who was in earshot the entire time, gets his feathers ruffled.
When Ryu asks who it is then, Van Zieks doesn't reply. BACKSTORY ALERT! Examining the chalices and bottles on the left leads to Van Zieks explaining the hallowed bottles are filled with the finest grapes from the finest vineyards he visits (so it is grape juice!!!) and he personally oversees the chalices being made by the finest crystal craftsmen in the world. Right, so not only is he filthy stinkin' rich, he's a perfectionist. Iris points out that Van Zieks throws the chalices and bottles around like they're worthless, to which Van Zieks says:
âBefore you open your mouth next time, you should consider the poor artisans whose work you defile.â
As it turns out, passive aggression is contagious now. Ryu replies with a âSo it's my fault? Silly me! How could I ever have thought otherwise?â and honestly I love that he's got enough guts to say this out loud. Our boy is growing a spine. Examining the wine casks has Ryu and Iris theorize about how there might be dead bodies in there, which once again ruffles Van Zieks's feathers.
Snrk. Examining the big diorama in the middle of the room has Ryu and Iris wonder whether Van Zieks can't go to the Exhibition in person and this is his way of dealing with that, which has Van Zieks snap that it's obviously an investigative aid. Â He even has pets of sorts in his office, in the form of a couple of bats hanging from the curtains. Alright, so the game's definitely humanizing this poor man now. No matter how many crazy stories Iris and Ryu come up with about him, there's usually a very innocent explanation to debunk the eerie myths. Something particularly interesting happens when Ryu shows Van Zieks his defense attorney armband. Van Zieks asks what the reason is for showing it to a British prosecutor, to which Ryu admits that he doesn't quite know. Van Zieks is silent for a bit, then says that he understands. âThere's merit in reminding yourself of who helped you become what you are today.â
As he says it, he reaches for his prosecutor's badge and if you're aware of the backstory, you'll know he's thinking of Klint. More importantly, this conversation puts Ryu and Van Zieks on the same level. Ryu is always thinking of Kazuma, who 'helped him become who he is today' and the armband signifies this, along with the sword. Similarly, Van Zieks lost someone very close to him and he's walking the path of prosecutor in his brother's memory. Ryu thanks Van Zieks for understanding and it's very significant that Van Zieks understands in the first place. Remember, in the first game he was under the impression that a Japanese person could never understand a British person and vice versa.
Showing Van Zieks the newspaper article has him looking a bit embarrassed, pointing out that a reporter must've been nearby and he'd been careless to let himself get photographed. Either way, all the thugs responsible have already been apprehended. The investigation into Odie Asman's activities meant that their arrests were already imminent anyway, and some hoped to kill Van Zieks before that happened. Much like McGilded, Asman used his wealth to buy his way towards an acquittal in court, but âhe got his comeuppance in the end.â Which is strange, right? Very suspicious. Van Zieks asks whether Ryu believes he has some sort of divine ability to make an accident like that happen. Ryu admits that would be far-fetched, and thinks to himself that even if Van Zieks were the Reaper, he'd have to be innocent of this particular death. We also learn that Van Zieks is familiar with Professor Harebrayne, the suspect in the Asman incident. When told that Ryu will be taking on the defense, Van Zieks is shocked.
Van Zieks goes on to explain that he knows Albert quite well. They were at university together. While he's lived in Germany for quite a few years, Albert is actually from a respectable British family. And despite Albert being in the science faculty and Van Zieks in law, they got along quite well. Now he's in pretty hot water for that Asman accident.
Hm. I don't quite know what to make of this reaction. I think what's going on here isn't that Van Zieks is rattled because Albert is being defended by a Japanese person, but because he's being defended by a rookie attorney who was just disbarred for six months for accidentally encouraging perjury, false witness and crime scene tampering in a court of law. Yes, Ryu has won his trials every single time, but it came at a price. Aside from this, there's one other thing Van Zieks knows about Ryu: he'll pursue the truth, no matter what. This means that if Albert indeed didn't succeed at inventing teleportation, it'll be revealed in court because exposing shams is Ryu's whole deal.
We learn that Van Zieks will be the one to prosecute Albert tomorrow, which is curious to say the least. Ryu wants to know why he'd do something like that, with Iris pointing out that so long as the Reaper is the prosecutor, Albert is doomed. Van Zieks replies that he's a Crown prosecutor and a mortal like any other; he's no demigod. In other words, he doesn't believe the curse to be a real curse. Iris points out that everyone who's been prosecuted by Van Zieks has died (which is already objectively wrong), to which Van Zieks replies that he usually prosecutes the vilest wretches of society.
⊠Harsh. Ryu points out that Soseki wasn't a vile wretch though, with Iris chiming in that Gina's also turned her life around and she's working very hard now. Van Zieks admits that things have changed ever since meeting Ryu- which of course has to do with Van Zieks's need to face Ryu in court even in mediocre trials rather than pursue his usual corrupted targets- but the point is that if any of those vile wretches died in mysterious circumstances, it was âat the hand of their own kindâ, not Van Zieks's. So basically, he believes that they were killed because they were dubious people engaged with dubious activities, not because of the Reaper's curse. Not only that, but ever since the rumors of the Reaper began, the number of serious crimes in London has decreased significantly. Even the most hardened criminals can be made fearful of their lives. Therefore, if his pseudonym of the Reaper can serve a useful purpose, he'll âadopt it gladly and with honourâ. Ryu repeats that which he already told Stronghart; that it's putting Van Zieks in danger.
He really is a prosecutor on the edge with nothing to lose, huh. So what Van Zieks is basically saying is that he doesn't care if he dies, so long as he spends the rest of his life serving the 'useful purpose' of carrying the Reaper moniker to intimidate the vilest of society. But is that really all there is to it? (Spoilers: It's not)
There's a bit more talk about the mysterious apprentice here, with Van Zieks explaining the man was placed in his care under Stronghart's orders. He's wearing a mask on Stronghart's orders and also doesn't speak to anyone from outside the office on Stronghart's orders. HM. Van Zieks claims that Stronghart isn't one for âmeaningless folliesâ, therefore he must have a good reason. This implies that Van Zieks believes in Stronghart's judgment almost blindly. To round up the conversation, Van Zieks asks about âthat Nipponese man. The one arrested twice in succession six months ago. With the stoop. And the moustache. And the jitters.â Looks super offensive at first glance, but I gotta admit, after six months I wouldn't remember Soseki's name either. Better to describe him than to guess the name and get it wrong. Still though, just because it's not super offensive doesn't mean it's not offensive. Just saying âthe one you defended six months agoâ would've done the trick. Either way, Ryu says he's doing just fine and a letter from him arrived by post just the other day.
So this is interesting. Earlier, Van Zieks claimed in his own words that he doesn't believe in the curse and those who died had it coming to them, but he's still inquiring after Soseki. Perhaps not so much because he's worried about Soseki himself, but because he's curious whether this man has successfully escaped the curse so far. He would know that for a fact about Gina, but the only way to verify Soseki's status is to ask Ryu about it.
Time to leave this glass cage of exposition and meet the defendant in person! Albert spouts a whole lot of dialogue about how his machine is treated differently depending on whether the case is treated as an accident or as murder. If it's murder, it can be examined up close and that's what Albert doesn't want. It has to be treated as an accident so that it'll be protected from prying eyes through The Special Dispensation for Scientific Equipment Act (wow that's a mouthful). Of course, that's not entirely what we're interested in. Let's ask about his friendship with Van Zieks! Ryu asks what he was like back in his university days and the answer surprises him.
HAH, wonderfully written exchange, this one. Albert goes to describe him as âthe little darling of the Van Zieks family, with all its great aristocratic originsâ. So Van Zieks has some very noble blood in him. We could've already guessed this from his title of Lord, but apparently it's a bit more serious. I could derail here with wild theories about his family originating from the Netherlands and having migrated to the UK around the time the first king of the Netherlands, Willem I van Oranje Nassau, rose to power in 1813. Willem changed the way nobility works to some degree in the country and not all noble families would've agreed with his way of doing things. But anyway, point is, Van Zieks is a big shot. Albert says that it was kind of a shock to him when he came back to Britain and discovered 'what Van Zieks had become'. He heard that there was 'a very big event' that completely changed Van Zieks after his graduation, but doesn't know what it was because he was already in Germany at the time. So here we have some more traces of that backstory and we have enough pieces to start sticking some things together. We know Van Zieks was once betrayed by a friend and we now know he was a very modest, pleasant gentleman when he was young. Whatever happened must've been very harsh indeed to turn him into such a sour lemon. Either way, Albert doesn't seem to know yet that Van Zieks will be the prosecutor and Ryu doesn't have the heart to tell him.
So let's investigate the crime scene! Here, it's confirmed that Gina Lestrade is indeed just fine and now in training to become a detective with Gregson. Cute! So eventually we get to talk to Gregson about Van Zieks and how he's acquainted with Albert. Gregson is overdramatically shocked to find out that the two of them are old buddies.
Remember when Van Zieks took a five year hiatus and nobody had to mysteriously die from the Reaper's curse? Those were the days, eh Gregson? Now he's even prosecuting his own friends willy-nilly. Gregson states he has no idea what goes on in Van Zieks's head  (a sentiment we've heard before in 1-4) and goes on to bring up the newspaper article about Van Zieks being attacked. When told that our good old pal the Reaper is just fine, Gregson utters a very uncomfortable âglad to hear itâ which honestly had me wondering whether he'd preferred Van Zieks to die.
Up until a certain someone gets killed and stuffed into a suitcase, I'd reckon. Gregson says that Van Zieks is a top class prosecutor, but not even he can always push the right verdict through. âSometimes justice can't win.â Gregson explains that naturally, Scotland Yard suspected Van Zieks at first and assumed he was taking matters into his own hands. There was a very thorough investigation and the outcome was that Van Zieks was in no way related to the mysterious deaths. So that's three people now who all insist Van Zieks couldn't possibly have committed the murders. Gregson says he's willing to stake his reputation on it, even. Of course, Gregson would know for sure, wouldn't he? But the narrative is telling us over and over that Van Zieks himself isn't the Reaper, with even Van Zieks himself implying he'd like to know just who the Reaper is. There's a conspiracy happening that Van Zieks is the centerpiece of, with the narrative really pushing the mystery aspect of it. The writers want us to care about the truth of the Reaper for sure.
OOOH that's meta! Ryu, being nosy and overly invested in Van Zieks's life, asks Gregson whether he knows about the 'incident' which changed Van Zieks after graduation.
Okay he clearly knows. Even a first time player can tell from this single reaction that Gregson's lying. The mystery thickens! At the end of the conversation, when Gregson's gone off, Iris recommends asking (S)Holmes about it instead. Safe bet, since (S)Holmes continuously knows more than he's letting on. To the house of wax we go! When asked about it, it's clear that he does know something (and is described as suddenly clamming up), but before he can explain there's a distraction in the form of Madam Tusspells and we have to sit through a mostly-unrelated Joint Reasoning segment. It leads into a conversation about a mass murderer known as the Professor. Ten years ago, there was a series of murders which rocked the capital right around the time Van Zieks graduated from university. Five people were killed before the man was caught and executed. This fifth victim was Klint van Zieks, Barok's older brother.
I really, really dislike this phrasing because Van Zieks was already studying law to begin with. He'd just graduated as a prosecutor; his brother's death had nothing to do with him pursuing that path. Anyway...
OOOH that's meta! So remember way back in the first essay when I said the backstory is optional? Well, here it is. The Great Ace Attorney is going all in for it. It's being tied to the ongoing plot, just as pretty much all the main prosecutor backstories are. Edgeworth's backstory is tied to Von Karma being the final boss, Godot's backstory is tied to the Fey lineage, Klavier's backstory (I say this lightly) is tied to Phoenix's disgrace... Now Van Zieks's story is tied to the serial killer who ruined so many lives a decade ago. And technically, we already have all the puzzle pieces we need for the next twist; we know Van Zieks was betrayed by a Japanese person who was his friend. So really, we can now say with absolutely certainty that the man arrested and executed back then was a Japanese buddy of Van Zieks.
The investigation segment is pretty much over, but the game has one more scene for us. This is something Ryunosuke won't witness, but the scriptwriters deemed it so important that we're ignoring Ryu to focus solely on the two characters involved. And cutting away from our main character is something that usually doesn't happen in Ace Attorney. Even when characters like Phoenix or Ryu are out of commission for whatever reason, a new 'main character' takes over for a second and we see everything from their point of view. I can think of only one other scene viewed without Ryu there, which happened in 1-5 just before Susato had to leave London. So what we have here is a very private moment between Van Zieks and Albert.
AWWW... The scenes in the office were great and all, but this right here is perhaps the most humanizing exchange we'll ever see with Barok. The reason for that, I think, is precisely because Ryu isn't there. He's alone with an old friend now, which means he can let his guard down more than he usually would. Even so, it's worth noting here that he doesn't look directly at Albert. He stands with his back to him the entire time and I'm certain this is intentional, because they could just as easily have rotated him into that sideways view that's often used in dialogue and courtroom scenes. He made his way down to the gaol to speak with his friend after ten long years, but is reluctant to look right at him. The conversation itself feels rather distant as well. Albert is delighted to see Van Zieks, but the sentiment isn't returned vocally. Van Zieks points out that they're meeting again âin prison of all placesâ and that the court will decide Albert's fate tomorrow. When Van Zieks raises a warning, Albert says he already knows his friend will be prosecuting and doesn't appear bothered at all at first. He does try to raise a question in the form of âAre you really...?â, but ultimately drops it and says that he knows Van Zieks has his best interests at heart. Van Zieks says he wouldn't entrust the trial of his friend to anyone else, and Albert thanks him for that. So my first guess upon taking in that dialogue is that Albert wonders for a brief moment whether Van Zieks really is the Reaper/really is cursed, only to shake it off because he considers the man his friend. Van Zieks seems to know it's risky to prosecute Albert, but deems it more important to handle the case himself than to let someone else do it. This, as we learn later, has to do with the Special Dispensation for Scientific Equipment Act and the protection of Albert's scientific secrets.
Next day, we're at the Old Bailey! In the defendant lobby, Ryu is once again told by Albert that the true goal to aim for in this trial is to protect his scientific hypothesis. So hypothetically speaking, the ideal outcome here would be to prove the death was accidental and that the kinesis was a success at the same time. (S)Holmes and Iris don't believe Albert's theory to be sound though, instead saying it couldn't possibly be done. In the courtroom, Ryu faces off against Van Zieks once more for the first time in six months! The judge is quick to point out that Odie Asman is a name familiar to him; a man who was prosecuted only a month ago by Van Zieks. When he asks whether this death is the work of the Reaper, Van Zieks instead describes it as âdivine retributionâ, but also âa direct result of the actions of the accused, Professor Albert Harebrayneâ. The prosecution asserts that the instantaneous kinesis demonstration was a success. He himself can't say for certain whether it's a sound theory, but it's being investigated by the British government since it was deemed to have potential and the prosecution's case aligns with the notion that there was indeed instantaneous- You know what? Let's just call it teleportation. That's easier to type.
Unfortunately, Van Zieks doesn't want to follow the accident angle. Instead, he outright accuses his old friend of murdering Asman using the totally-functional-teleportation-machine-which-totally-worked to be the sole benefactor of a scientific grant. Harsh. Very harsh. I don't entirely understand why he didn't pursue the accident angle instead, but then, I don't quite know enough about law. My guess is that as the prosecution, he's not allowed to. Scotland Yard found enough evidence at the scene to substantiate a murder plot, especially that damning screwdriver that Ryu so graciously handed to Gregson, so that's what the prosecution has to go with, maybe? It's up to the defense attorney to debunk that down to an accident, then, so in essence Van Zieks is counting on Ryu to 'defeat him' and prove the murder aspect wrong. It would align with the conversation Albert had with Van Zieks in prison, where he said that 'it was a terrible accident and the young Eastern man acting as his defence assured him that he can prove it'.
So speaking of that screwdriver, Albert tries to discredit it himself by saying that if he had stabbed Asman on the stage, there would've been a whole lot of blood. Van Zieks pours himself a glass of wine and 'congratulates' his friend on a good rebuttal.
âHere's to you, Albert!â
Albert laughs it off sheepishly, saying he's nothing compared to âBarokâ (awww, first name basis), but a chalice is immediately flung. Van Zieks says Albert neglected to mention one crucial possibility, which is that the lack of blood is explained by the notion that the screwdriver remained in the victim's chest to plug the wound. Therefore, since the demonstration was totally a success, the screwdriver was teleported along with the victim. Ryu thinks to himself that he had no idea the victim had been stabbed and wonders whether Van Zieks kept that information to himself to keep the upper hand on purpose. This whole thing jars me a little, because the screwdriver is brought up relatively early in the trial during the very first cross-examination. Is not mentioning it during the opening statement and waiting for Gregson to bring it up three minutes later really the same as 'keeping it to himself to gain the upper hand'?
Either way, Ryu counters, saying that the screwdriver was found at the stage and therefore didn't teleport at all, with Gregson serving as an official witness to this location. It's pretty clear from the next dialogue that Gregson never told Van Zieks where that screwdriver was found.
âThat you contravened the Special Dispensation for Scientific Equipment Act?â
Gregson is immediately up in arms, but it's fine. There was no investigation needed to find a screwdriver lying in plain sight. So now Ryu decides to tighten the screws. He claims that if the prosecution can't explain the inconsistency (the screwdriver being found on the stage but no blood being there so clearly it must've plugged the wound), the testimony is unreliable. Van Zieks doesn't reply and Ryu thinks to himself that he looks stumped, but uh...
He just looks annoyed to me. The person to object next is not Van Zieks, it's Albert. He says that metal can't be teleported with the machine, so it only makes sense the screwdriver stayed behind and there's no inconsistency at all. Van Zieks suggests: âClearly we should hear the accused's explanation. ⊠Or should I say, this brilliant scientist's explanation?â And I think here in these two sentences we have the crux of the issue. Albert wants to be treated as a legitimate scientist above all else. Even if that means he's branded a murderer, so long as his hypothesis is protected and the confidentiality stands, it makes no difference to him. This was likely discussed with Van Zieks the night before as well. Albert is apparently willing to die for the sake of his scientific principles and... Well. I'm sure Van Zieks can understand. He's willing to die for the sake of serving the Reaper purpose. In a way, this means the defendant and the prosecution are in cahoots together, which is another first in Ace Attorney history. The two of them are fighting to keep the hypothesis of teleportation intact and if Ryu manages to prove that it was an accidental death, then great! Unfortunately, the second that screwdriver was discovered, the chances of that became slim to none. It was murder, plain and simple. On a sidenote, I found this little gem:
I'm counting this as humanization, because the underlying sentiment here is that despite his haughty better-than-thou attitude, Van Zieks is still friends with someone so very scatterbrained, his name is forgotten sometimes. Even Ryu is taken aback by the purity of the friendship.
Heh heh... Time to cause some more havoc by informing the court that Asman's metal-rimmed glasses were still on his face and since Albert already said metal can't be teleported, his hypothesis is a load of tosh. The jurors go up in arms about it, saying the machine should be stripped down and examined. The game gives Ryu the option to either raise an objection or 'wait and see', but this is another one of those fake choices. Waiting and seeing just leads to a bit more dialogue between the jurors before Ryu steps in of his own accord. He says Albert would have no reason to build such an elaborate fake machine and put on a public display for murder, but Van Zieks counters with the very good reason: Money. The jurors are even more outraged, calling him a fake scientist who's only in it for the guineas, and Albert begs them to believe that his science is built upon a sound hypothesis. Van Zieks comes in to 'save the day' (sort of).
âThe fact remains that the victim was transported instantly to the Crystal Tower. Which means that the experiment... was a success.â
And I gotta say, this next bit is just very enjoyable to me. The way it's written is so great.
HEH HEH.... Van Zieks has some more witnesses to summon who saw the incident from some 'very special seats', but let's end the essay here for now and pick it back up next time!

On Miyuki Inaba and Macross:
Iâve heard nothing but love for wave 2-10 of destruction; but Iâve realized that the scene loses some of its magic for western audience because they donât know itâs a shout out.Â
So today I want to break down for you today the biggest reference in 13 Sentinels you most likely missed out on; Miyuki Inaba, Lynn Minmay and The Super Dimensional Fortess Macross.
Join me under the cut for massive spoilers for Sentinels of course, and a nearly 40 year old anime youâve never seen.
I think everyone knows Sentinels is chock full of sci-fi shout outs. From War of the Worlds, to Terminator, The Matrix, heck even GroundHogâs day, the list goes on and on. Most western audiences will be able to spot the bulk, so why havenât you heard of Macross?
Simply put, copyright battles. In 1985, Hamorny Gold stitched together three unrelated animes to create Robotech. One of the anime series involved was Macross and Harmony Gold has kept a tight leash on the copyright preventing the series from ever getting a real proper English release ever since.
...so what is Macross?
Well, in super blunt Wikipedia stolen summaries:
Macross (ăăŻăăč, Makurosu, English: /mÉËkrÉs/) is a Japanese science fiction mecha anime media franchise/media mix, created by Studio Nue (most prominently mechanical designer ShĆji Kawamori) and Artland in 1982. The franchise features a fictional history of Earth and the human race after the year 1999, as well as the history of humanoid civilization in the Milky Way. It consists of four TV series, four movies, six OVAs, one light novel, and five manga series, all sponsored by Big West Advertising, in addition to 40 video games set in the Macross universe, 2 crossover games, and a wide variety of physical merchandise.
If you asked me to boil the series down to itâs three staples Iâd pick the following three elements. Big robot fights, love triangles and music, usually all interplaying together to make some of the most exciting fight scenes in anime.
The series is going strong in Japan ever since its 1982 release, with the most recent series Macross Deltaâs newest film âAbsolute Live!!!!!!â getting its first teaser trailer days before I sat down to write this post. Itâs insanely big in Japan and youâve probably seen a half dozen Macross references if youâve watched a sci-fi anime before. Most likely the signature missile blast.
Sentinels pulls specifically from the 1984 film: the Super Dimensional Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love? The story is largely a shortened version of the first tv series which aired in 82 and is considered in canon a film retelling of the events.
The film focuses on a colony ship adrift through space suddenly being attacked by an alien race called the Zentardi, itâs both a war film and a very quiet drama all tangled up in the three central characters of Hikaru Ichijo, the young pilot, Misa Hayase, one of the bridge officers and then Miss Macross herself; Lynn Minmay. An idol singer aborad the ship who has during its journey become a huge celebrity after starting as a simple waitress at her familyâs restaurant.Â
Minmay is considered something of the face of the series and while other characters may never come up again in its extended universe, the story of Lynn Minmay is akin to legend in later entries in the seires.Â
When mankind was faced with these invaders, there was one simple thing that managed to send the enemy into disarray, the music of Lynn Minmay shocked the Zentardi who had no concept of culture and music. They end up capturing her and the other two leads during the course of the film and while the others manage to escape; Minmay is trapped behind with the Zentardi.
They eventually ask her to look and exam a relic theyâve kept on board their ship, and Minmay discovers itâs of all things, a song.
So, if isnât obvious enough by this description alone, Miyuki is modeled after Minmay. Itâs not a 1 to 1, but the curls in her hair and the style of her outfit make it even more obvious.
They have a lot of the same general vibes too, Minmay over the course of the film becomes a tragic melancholic figure and a symbol of the war effort against her will. Her sweet dreamy smile and glittering energy become subdued as she faces set back over setback. She remains strong up until a point behind her facade of confidence until she discovers Hikaru now has feelings for Misa. Culminating in the finale of the film where a despair filled Minmay refuses to sing because it all seems pointless.
Miyuki foils this of course with her journey from the plucky Tomi Kisaragi of a prior loop to a ghost in the machine; a somber beautiful figure but a changed person. She only has this role sheâs taken on in the end. All she can do to impact the out come of this fight is sing and hope Shu hears her.
In the finale, Minmay is given a wake up call and asked by Hikaru to sing her song and try to save the lives of everyone left aboard the macross. Roused from her despair, Minmay agrees and the final battle is set to the tunes of the song the Zentardi had shown her, now with lyrics Misa had translated. At long last reaching them and halting the conflict.
This is of course, what 2-10 is a direct reference too. Miyuki sings Seaside Vacation until she canât be heard any longer.
Even if youâve never seen the film, the clip alone is a treat in itself. Itâs a lovely piece of animationÂ
But Macrossâs influences go deeper than just Miyuki and the original Macross. In Macross Plus, the primary idol is the artificial intelligence Sharon Apple. She is also itâs major villian as her AI becomes destabilized during the course of the film.
With the illegal modifications installed in Sharon takes control of the capital of Earth with her music and nearly destroys the city. Miyukiâs character is all Minmay, but her role in the story is a heroic Sharon Apple.
And outside of Miyuki, Macross references and influences can be spotted in Tomiâs story in which she and Nenji are trapped in 2025 and he begins to fall for her mirrors the arc that occurs between Hikaru and Misa after they escape the clutches of the Zentardi. The pair find themselves trapped on a mysterious planet, which turns out to be Earth rampaged by the Zentardi. Misa and Hikaruâs hostility towards each other fades as they try to come to grips with this truth. They spend a long time alone in the ruins and eventually fall in love before eventually being saved by the Macross. Which, is roughly what occurs in Tomiâs story between her and Nenji.
Shuâs story as well, with the minor focus on his confusion of his feelings towards Tomi and Yuki are also arguably a tongue in cheek reference towards the series many Love triangles, which arenât always true triangles but always remain a corner stone of the series.Â
Does Shu actually have feelings towards Tomi? No but sheâs showing up everywhere and itâs left him a little out of sorts and plays into the misinformation sentinels feeds you, leading you to think thereâs a triangle of some sorts:
Maybe theyâre stretches, but considering it was stated in an interview the film was a huge inspiration for the game, I wouldnât be shocked. I found the interview on twitter back in November but canât track it down now and Iâm v. sad
Thereâs also the matter of the Protoculture.
The Macross is a massive colony ship, sent out into space with the goal of returning to earth after a long space voyage to insure humanityâs survival, much like the probes the 2188 colony sent out. Misa and Hikaru return to find this was the only thing thatâs had prevented humanity from being wiped by the Zentardi.
While on earth, Misa and Hikaru manages to discover a set of ruins of a highly advanced civilization that had created both humanity and the Zentardi. The protoculture.
The logs they manage to Find reveal that their inventions grew too great and they have all but disappeared from the universe, but humanity in the end are aliens as well. The invading Zentardi were just tools used by the Protoculture to wage war on itself and contributed to the death of their people.
The song Minmay sings is a relic of the Protoculture, an ancient highly advanced civilization from thousands of years ago.
Now Hm. Why does that sound familiar? What was it Fluffy said about 2188 and the Deimos code....
Theyâre obviously not 1-1 references, but Sentinels was such a labor of love that pulled from so many genres itâs nice to see such an iconic series get a well thought out reference.Â
I hope this was something of a fun read and gives you a better love of Miyuki and 2-10.
I donât know if Iâd recommend getting into Macross if you liked Sentinels, but if youâre interested send me an ask and I could probably give you a helpful breakdown. I love both series so much and consider them my top two sci-fi!Â
#macross#13 sentinels: aegis rim#miyuki inaba#lynn minmay#sugar speaks#i almost always listen to macross tunes while working on 13sar fics and am really passionate about both series and ready to shill lmao#i wanted more pictures and tumblr said....no#sugarâs 13 sar collection

Heya Peek! You wrote in one of your replies that it is difficult for asian artist let alone a Chinese artist to hold a tour overseas. Can you expand a bit on that? Also adding onto to this, I understand that if we were to compare it with kpop, the western reception is quite different towards cpop/c-artist. Though has there been any c-artist who have achieve the feat of a proper world tour overseas?
Disclaimer: This post is informed by my experience in music. All of this is fact, not speculation. Â
Hi! You always ask such great questions!
Letâs talk a bit about touring!Â
For many artists around the world, touring is often the #1 income generating activity for an artist (unless they have a ton of really high-valued endorsements). Though it is exhausting, it is also very rewarding, as artists get to interact with their fans in a controlled environment and reap the rewards. It is is also a necessary part of the music ecosystem, as many tours tend to support album releases, which generate more sales.Â
Many artists in Japan and China actually have very successful careers in their local markets and never have to even leave their home country to tour, because the size of their local markets are really just that huge. Artists from Taiwan, Singapore, and South Korea, however, do have to go outside their immediate local market to maximize their earning potential because their local market isnât big enough. This is why Kpop is actually South Koreaâs #1 export and contributor of South Koreaâs GDP.Â
For artists who donât technically have to leave their country to tour, leaving comes with the risk of losing out on local opportunities and higher earning potential, especially if the overseas tour doesnât come with the same dollar value as local tours. This is easily the very first hurdle all Asian artists have to overcome: passing up on local opportunities for the chance of developing a career abroad.Â
The second hurdle that artists have to face is finding someone who will pay for the tour. The misconception that many people have about touring is that record labels or management companies are the ones who organize the tours and pay for them. This is completely incorrect. Instead, concert promoters are the ones who fund, organize, and produce tours.Â
You see, all venues are owned and operated by a concert promoter. A huge majority of venues in the United States, for example, are owned by Live Nation or AEG. There are a number that are owned independently, but thereâs no question that Live Nation and AEG are the biggest power players in the game. So in order to put on a concert, you have to deal with the venue owner, which is always going to be a concert promoter. (Or a Chinese casino.)Â
The reality is: without a concert promoter such as Live Nation or AEG or an independent promoter (or multiple local promoters) to help pay for a tour, major tours just never happen in todayâs live music industry.Â
The problem with relying on local concert promoters is that most of the time, local promoters are only willing to shell out money and take a risk on artists that have a track record. Often, theyâll turn to resources such as Pollstar Pro, which track ticket sales, box office revenue, etc. for live events per artist. Unfortunately, many Asian artists actually arenât registered in the Pollstar system, and so this information is usually inconclusive. As a result, talent buyers for local promoters who are unfamiliar with Asian artists would need to rely on a few things:
Their own research on the artist to determine the artistâs market size, especially if this is an international artist who has never performed locally before
Their trust in the agent/individual who pitched the artist. The trust placed in the agent is actually a huge factor, especially if the agent has historically been able to demonstrate a solid track record of strong box offices.
If the Asian artist in question doesnât have local representation via an agent or someone else who can pitch them to a buyer, then that means the only way they would be able to tour would be if there is an independent Asian promoter or talent buyer who knows who the artist is and is willing to take a risk. (The alternative would be for the Asian promoter to act as an intermediary agent, but that is literally another post in and of itself and is more complicated so Iâm going to not focus on that for now.)Â
So, letâs assume there is an independent Asian promoter who wants to take a risk on an artist who has never toured internationally before. Letâs further assume the Asian promoter already has all the money available to pay for this tour. They know who the artist is, sees that the artist is trending locally in their market, and believes that the artist can stage a successful tour.Â
First, the promoter has to contact the artistâs management company and ensure that the artist has availability for the time period in which they want to tour. They also have to convince the management company to even be willing to consider the offer. At that point, they have to request the artistâs technical and hospitality rider from the management company so they can actually price it out.
Then, the promoter has to route the tour by securing venue availabilities. This is actually a lot harder if the promoter is funding the tour 100% independently because venues are unwilling to place âholdsâ on any dates for too long if the show is a rental and not one that involves their own talent buyer. So, the promoter has to act very quickly to secure a number of dates.Â
Once the tour is routed, the promoter then has to send a lucrative enough offer to the company that will make the company feel itâs worth the local opportunity cost - and it cannot be a small amount or one or two dates, unless those two dates come with such a huge price tag that the management company simply canât turn it down. The offer also has to have an entire list of cities, venues, venue sizes, and dates. This is usually delivered in the form of a deal memo to the management company.Â
Deal memos for most Asian artists also always include the following:Â
Artist guarantee per showÂ
Hospitality clause that includes 5 star hotels, international travel for X amount of individuals, including business/first class flights for artist (and potentially the artistâs security and manager), and luxury SUVs or comparable vehicles for internal transportationÂ
Per diem for X amount of people, including artistÂ
Cost of visasÂ
Attached tech and hospitality rider provided by artist management
Requirements for artist (i.e. XX minutes of performance, any meet and greets, any PR etc.)Â
Now, at this point, if the management company agrees to the terms of the deal memo, they then turn this into a contract which is signed. Once the contract is signed, the promoter is responsible for paying the artist at least 50% of their guarantee as a deposit. They then need to begin working on securing the artistâs visa. This is actually the hard part, especially if the artist previously has never performed in the country.Â
So, if we are talking about the United States as an example, as it is the biggest market in the West for Asian artists, the artist has to obtain either an O-visa or an H1-B visa. This usually requires a visa attorney who specializes in international artists who will actually get a letter from a Senator to recommend the artist for a visa. The artist then has to go to their embassy for an interview and their embassy side has to also approve it - especially if itâs a Chinese artist, so that sometimes requires lawyers on the artistâs side. If the visa doesnât go through and is denied, and if appeals donât manage to go through in time, then the tour is dead on its feet. So, a visa is really important!Â
While this is happening, the promoter has to also work on obtaining a CWA (central withholding agreement) to avoid having to withhold 30% of income that would otherwise go straight to the IRS. If they do not succeed in obtaining a CWA that they can present to the venue, the venue will be required to withhold 30% of all box office proceeds at settlement. (Yeah, I know thatâs kind of insane, but itâs technically the law.) This 30% would ultimately impact the promoterâs bottom line, and potentially the artistâs, depending on the kind of contract that is negotiated. (If the artist is made responsible for tax withholding, then the artistâs income will be hit negatively if the promoter is unable to or fails to obtain a CWA.)Â
I can go into far more detail about all the promoterâs responsibilities from this point on, but you asked why itâs difficult for an artist to hold a tour overseas - and as you can see, even before we get into the actual technical production part planning for the tour, itâs already extremely complicated. Many Asian management companies simply do not want to deal with that kind of complication when they already know how things work from home and itâs a relatively âeasyâ paycheck.Â
Touring overseas usually comes with a big cultural shock for the artist. Many Asian artists donât enjoy the same level of fame abroad as they do at home, which means, they often donât get the same level of care that they do at home. What their team can afford for them locally is not necessarily what the local promoter can afford abroad. Some artists who normally are used to a 5-star experience everywhere may sometimes have to settle for less and be comfortable with the idea of scaling down production, which not all artists are willing to do. (Scaling down on production is usually the #1 most contentious area of negotiation between promoters and management companies. The second thing that they tend to fight on is usually the hospitality rider, but thatâs not often as bad as negotiating tech riders.)
Sometimes, the tech rider issue is such a huge problem that the artist will blow their tech budget entirely out of the water - especially artists and management teams who have massive egos and have a lot of trouble understanding they really are not as big of a deal as they are overseas.Â
I can think of a particular Asian artist who performed internationally in the United States and insisted on actually shipping their entire stage that they toured with in their country to the U.S. Instead of renting locally, which would have saved a huge amount of money, they shipped the entire stage and all of the equipment. They also decided to fly out over 100 people, 30+ of whom flew first or business class with an average price of about $3000/per ticket.Â
The promoter did such a bad job actually marketing the show that they were literally giving away tickets and even paying people to fill seats because of just how bad it looked to have an empty venue.Â
It was a complete disaster.Â
In any case, there are a lot more reasons why touring abroad is difficult for Asian artists, but as you can see, getting a tour off the ground itself is already insanely difficult - and we havenât even gotten to the actual performance itself.Â
As for your other question - Iâll have to ask that you actually submit that in a separate ask because this particular blog post has already gotten so long, and I think that is another conversation entirely!Â
I hope Iâve helped to shed some light on some of the many difficulties that come with trying to stage an international tour for an Asian artist!Â

Boggart Form: A headless figure easily recognizable as herself, crumbling away into dust. A failed attempt to merge with nature resulting in her demise
Riddikulus Form: A statue of her like the one in her parents' back garden, over glorifying her features, that has been attacked and is crumbling away. She hates that statue
Amortentia (to others): Someone smelling Ida would smell lime juice, fresh water, and static electricity
Amortentia (to her): TBD
Patronus: Ida has never been able to cast a Patronus. Not for a lack of happy enough memories, but because of her powerful soul. The Patronus can never escape her magical core
Patronus Memory: N/A
Mirror of Erised: A tree so big it grows up an entire mountainside. The tree bark is covered in swirling patterns Ida recognizes as Elemental runes. She doesn't yet know what exactly this tree is, but she feels an undeniable longing for it
Family Spells: The Sommer family has no special family spells
Inherent Magic: Elemental
- Ida has all the magic of a normal witch, but on top of that has a deep connection to the earth and the magic stemming from it, even beyond the earth into the universe. If not properly trained (or if driven to a great enough temptation), an Elemental could vaporize the entire planet, or bend it to their will. They could also leave humanity behind if they so wished and become nature itself
- Elementals are theorized to have fragments of Merlin's soul fused with their own, hence why they feel strong connections to each other and can't ever fatally harm one of their own. Most Elementals also fall in love with each other as well, and the connection is thought to be stronger than a normal human's love could ever be. These connections help ensure no Elemental gives in to whichever temptation has the strongest pull on them. Only one Elemental has ever yet gone evil, and this is how it was discovered that they cannot kill one another
- This special magic is not hereditary. In fact, no one knows what causes someone to be born an Elemental, only that there have been less and less of them in the recent centuries. There are only two known Elementals left: Ida and Sebastien
Family
Mother: Lina is a warm hearted woman who wants the best for her daughter, misguided though she might be. She often has to shout at her husband to trying to hold Ida back, or discourage Ida's dreams. She noticed Ida's growing power long before her husband did, and was the one to finally contact someone for help when Ida grew so strong and uncontrolled she couldn't stop floating
Father: Elias is a business oriented man who, though he loves his daughter, up until her reveal as an Elemental wished she was a son. He's the reason Ida was homeschooled for so long, as he didn't think a girl was worth the tuition money. He refused to believe that Ida was anything other than ordinary until a man in a high position told him otherwise
Sisters: None
Brothers: None
Pets: A screech owl named Goldig, meaning 'cute'
Other Important Family: Ida's paternal aunt, Ingrid, is one of the biggest influences in her life as a child. Ingrid is an independent witch who lives fabulously by herself with her dead husband's fortune. Ida used to yearn for a future where she wasn't tied down by a man and could do as she pleased
Family Values: The Sommer family as a whole is mainly concerned with two things: remaining pureblooded, and growing richer. Most of the Sommers are decently good people, but they have period-appropriate prejudices and are willing to leave someone behind to save themselves, metaphorically and literally
Opinion on Family: Up until entering Hogwarts, Ida really only knew her family, so she loved them and thought very highly of them. As she becomes more socialized and learns more about the world, she starts to notice her parents' many flaws and though she never stopped loving them, she does resent them for homeschooling her and ignoring the signs of her being abnormal, because she used to think she was broken when in reality she's nearly a god
Friendships
Introverted or Extroverted: Extroverted
Best Friend: Sebastien Parr - another mc of mine who is also an Elemental, and an exchange student from Beauxbatons
Worst Friend: TBD
Friend She Didn't Expect: TBD
Who She Wishes Was Her Friend: TBD
List of Casual Friends:
- Sophia Burton @gcldensnitch
- Charlotte Grant @weasleysandwheezes
- canon friends TBD
Romance
Current Crush: None
Current Partner: None
Past Partners: None
Future Partners: TBD - will likely be picked from the game's characters, but could possibly be someone else's mc
Her Type: TBD
Hogwarts
House: Slytherin
Prefect Status: No
Quidditch: Never played, but loves to watch
Clubs: None
Organizations: The fake Headmaster's Apprentices organization that she and Sebastien use to hide what they're really doing
Favorite Class: Herbology
Least Favorite Class: History of Magic
Favorite Professor: TBD
Least Favorite Professor: TBD
Timeline
Young Childhood: Ida is kept at home. She knows no children her age, and spends most of her free time roaming her father's land. No matter how far she wanders, she never seems to get lost. Ida has strange dreams where she watches the world as an outsider. After being told by a Seer that her ideal wand would be created at a small shop in Japan, Ida convinces her father to spend a month there over the summer, and her mother takes her to the shop to get her wand. Ida sneaks out one night and climbs a cliff that looks out over the ocean. In later years she can't remember whether rising up over the waters and hearing the stars call to her by name was a dream or not, but she knows the moon smiled at her.
First Year: N/A
Second Year: N/A
Third Year: Ida's uncontrolled Elemental magic reaches a breaking point, and Ida explodes her little study room as she lifts up in the air, unable to come down. Her mother sends for help: two healers, a historian, and three government officials later, Ida is brought down and informed that she will be enrolled in Hogwarts the following year. She is not informed why, though her parents are
Fourth Year: Ida enters Hogwarts with no social skills. She meets Sebastien and they're both informed of their true nature. As Ida struggles to catch up on her studies as well as train her Elemental magic, she also learns just how wonderful having friends her age is
Fifth Year: TBD
Sixth Year: Ida grows suspicious of Sebastien's "friend" Dorian. Other details TBD
Seventh Year: TBD
Post Graduation: Ida marks herself with ancient Elemental runes and her father gifts her the cottage. She spends a year and a half where almost no one hears from her, before appearing back in her friends' lives as if nothing happened, looking healthier and happier than ever
Career(s): Ida doesn't live long enough to have a career
Marriage and Children: Ida marries (TBD) from school, someone who had always had a crush on her that she eventually returned the feelings for. They spend a beautiful three years together before her end. Ida manages to give her love a son, but only after she's gone
Death: Ida sacrifices herself to stop Sebastien and Dorian from destroying the world. Ida's biggest temptation as an Elemental was always to leave her humanity behind and become nature, so she does. She traps the two men inside of a ridiculously large tree that grows out of the mountainside near her cottage. This tree forms from her body, and has a notch where her favorite necklace can be inserted to be allowed entry to the chamber Sebastien and Dorian are trapped. However, she hid the necklace in Japan, where no one will find it until a century has passed and her friends have passed away. Ida can occasionally gather her spirit into a physical form to communicate with her love and child that she left behind
Notable Facts Not Previously Mentioned
- Ida is the ancestor of my main hphm mcs, Gracie and Tessa Chiva, on their father's side
- The reason Ida is sent to Hogwarts and not Durmstrang is the fear of bad influences. No one wanted to risk her being corrupted
- Ida does feel guilty about leaving her love behind, but since she couldn't kill Sebastien and she still loved him and wanted him to be happy, this was the only way she could think of to stop him
- Her love watched her leave humanity behind. As they wept, Ida's spirit gathered to say her goodbyes, and point them to their son, who had been born from Ida's final breath at exactly 11:18 pm
- Ida thinks very highly of herself. This is both from being praised so much as a child and hearing so much about the good she can do as an Elemental
- She throws a graduation party so extravagant that it's talked about for decades after her death
- No one but her love knows what truly happened to her. All anyone else knows is that she and Sebastien disappeared at the same time

SF Character Overview: Ken and his Brazilian catchphrase
I mentioned before that the Ryu and Ken rivalry dates back long, long before the games themselves, it treads ground familiar to culture since the days of wuxia. Itâs been there since SF1, but the two of them have entirely separate worlds outside of their fistcuffs with each other. Ryu usually wins, but one thing becomes very clear when they are separate:
Ken gets a lot of mileage out of not being the main character, doesnât he?Â
Built as the opposite of Ryu, but not nearly as important to the Street Fighter narrative, tends to give Ken a lot more freedom as a character than Ryu has. His playstyle is flashy, bold, just as accessible as Ryuâs but with tricks that favor newcomers that just wanna steamroll the competition with special attacks instead of patiently learning how to play the match. His clothes are in much better shape than Ryuâs, but he conducts himself with far less grace and humility. His alternate costumes are far more ridiculous. He gets to undergo radical design shifts in each game, since he doesnât have to stay completely static visually-wise like Ryu. He gets to marry and have a life outside of fighting, he gets an understudy, he has a kid that punches him in the nuts. We make memes about how insufferable he is to fight and how crappy his face and hair look in V. We fight him in stages like boat parties and hotels that belong to him. He doesnât really need anything more in life, and fights mainly because he likes it.Â
In a lot of ways, Ken has undisputably got it better than Ryu in his general life. Which is part of why Ryu will nearly always be the better fighter when they fight. Ken has a life outside of Street Fighter, and he joins the tournaments not for the money or rewards (he doesnât need it), or even to prove himself (he needs it even less), but because Ryu is there, and heâll be damned if he lets Ryu keep showing him up without putting on a fight.Â
It doesnât usually fall onto Ken the role of being the main POV character, the one who has to grow and struggle in a narrative. But sometimes it does to unexpectedly great results.Â
My main experience with Ken as a character actually has little to do with the games, and instead the Street Fighter II Victory anime.
Street Fighter II Victory was an anime released in 1995 to capitalize on the release of the Street Fighter film, the one starring Raul Julia and no one else. It took a very back-to-basics approach with the storyline, focusing primarily on Ryu and Ken as shonen protagonists, their growth as warriors and their gradual encounters with other SF characters. The show also featured several elements that would later become SF canon, such as Sagat being a good character caught on the wrong side on the law and Chun-Li being brainwashed into working for Shadaloo
The show never achieved much popularity in the US, or in Japan, but I cannot overstate just how popular it became in South America. In Brazil, itâs considered by many to be the absolute peak of Street Fighter as a property, story-wise. The show aired on the same network as Dragon Ball, and on similar time slots. Kids grew up on this show, the scene where Ryu learns to perform the Hadouken was extremely imitated by an entire generation of kids in Brazil.Â
And in regards to Ken, hereâs something: Have you ever heard of a character who has a famous catchphrase, that is purely an invention of dubbing that only exists in one side of the globe and is completely unknown elsewhere?
Because Ken had one for this show. It was âIh, Ăł o cara aĂâ.Â
The closest translation to it I can provide is that it means something like âYeesh, the nerve on that guyâ or âWew, what a jerkâ, but itâs really hard to convey exactly. Itâs an extremely informal phrase, bordering on surfer/skater slang, that Ken uses to mock people for being arrogant or pretentious or just anyone he doesnât like. Picture that âSonic the Hedgehog wagging his finger at youâ kind of attitude, thatâs what it conveys.Â
It gets brought up so often in Brazilian fan communities dedicated to Street Fighter, itâs become so associated as THE Ken phrase, that it was kinda surprising to visit English pages and discover that this just plain doesnât exist, outside of Brazil. I canât think of a similar phenomenon.Â
Of course, thatâs one half of what people remember most about Ken in the show. The other half is this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwBhESdzaJE
The Ken vs Vega fight, though it may not be to you, is one of those extremely iconic anime fights that even people who donât remember anything about the show will go âoooh, shit, yeah I remember that one, Ken got fucked to hell and back and then he wonâ. Itâs a harsh, brutal encounter, juxtaposed with the also extremely famous scene of Ryu practicing his Hadouken, aired on the daytime slot usually reserved for kid-friendly cartoons, and where as DBZ fights could get bloody too, the tension was lesser because everyone knew the characters were gods that could survive anything.Â
This is just one guy who knows karate trying to survive against a maniac with super speed and poison tipped blades, fighting to save his friend from being sold off to an international crime ring (with the not subtle threat of sexual assault), completely alone, on a countdown due to being poisoned and getting more and more injured. And then he wins.
Thatâs always gonna be the main thing that appeals to me about Ken, a character I often forget I have strong feelings for until I revisit that scene and other similar moments in other Street Fighter stories.Â
Ryu is the guy who overcomes everything, any demons within or outside, to win the fight. Heâs always going to win the fight and look cool doing so. Heâs always going to be Ryu, doing what he does.Â
Ken? He may win, but he ainât the main character of anything. He has a wholly separate life, loved ones to fight for. He grows his hair and cuts it, he changes his clothes, he gets to lose, even often. He gets to partake in fights where he gets beaten cruelly and harshly in ways Ryu would not, but when he wins, he wins with that fire in his fist and that glint in his eye and the carefree smugness of someone who gets to be rebellious and arrogant because heâs not the main character.Â
And because heâs got the best uppercut, give or take a flowchart or two.
Final rating: 4/5

I have a another question about localization since you say all of the FE localizations are good but then there's the localization I hear about of FE fates a localize game that I hear so many Nintendo and FE fans say really bad things about it such as a lot of Mistranslations, Big Script changes, Memes being add in, etc also there was some censorship that got some of them really mad and with some of them saying that it's the wrost localize game of all time is it really that bad as they say?
Whew, this ask has been sitting in my inbox for actual months! Sorry for taking so long to respond! Itâs probably unsurprising, but thereâs so much to unpack here, and just deciding what to write had me going in circles for a long time.
Iâm not entirely satisfied with this answer, but if I tried to discuss everything I have in mind about the Fates localization at once, Iâd never be done. So I stuck to 5 topics to give a basic summary. If anyone wants to follow up on one particular issue for more info, or know more about something I didnât discuss here, please do! Iâd love to round out my argument.
First off - a little history just to get our minds situated into the history of localization. Bad localization has always existed, in fact thatâs pretty much all we had in the 80âs and somewhat into the 90âs until it became clear that video games were going to become very complex in story and text going forward. Even a surface look into old localizations like this one tells a very long story. We have to remember that âbadâ localization is everywhere, and itâs just always going to exist, even now that we have professional teams dedicated to localization, so long as humans arenât perfect, time crunch is standard in the gaming industry, and we all have our own definition of âgoodâ.
Next, hereâs the short answer to the question:
When I say âoverallâ good, I do stress that pretty heavily, because of course there are plenty of changes that each individual player of the game will have their own take on. The Fire Emblem games simply have so much text in them that even a hundred small mistranslations or changes are just a drop in the bucket.
But I do agree that Fates is one of the worst of the FE localizations, if your terms are in number of changes from the Japanese. Awakeningâs is up there too.Â
Yeah, Awakeningâs localization has a lot of questionable moments too. I know this take isnât a surprise to all fans. But ever since Fates came out, Iâve seen people praising Awakeningâs localization, and saying that 8-4 (an outside studio often hired by Nintendo, they localized Awakening) is an amazing localization team and Treehouse (Nintendoâs own team, did Fates) is garbage. TBH⊠They both did a job that has huge ups and downs. Are people really doomed to always forget the flaws that the previous installment in a series had as soon as something new comes out? Ha ha.
I think itâs common knowledge at this point that localizations are not made for the people who want a more direct-to-the-Japanese version. And that sucks, and the feelings of anger, disappointment, etc. in those who wanted a more direct translation are perfectly valid and entirely understandable.Â
But we really, really need to understand and accept that localizations are made for the target audience/culture as a whole, and to sell to the most people possible. By getting angry and rejecting the entire gameâs script as âtotal changes,â âbutchering,â âchanging the games to fit the localization teamâs motives,â and all sorts of other toxic nonsense, we miss out on all of the nuance that actually exists. We rob ourselves of the fun that could be had analyzing whether or not the localizers did their job of adapting the game to the target audience, and how they might have done it better. And we canât notice and appreciate all of the times the team did do a great or good job.
In the vast majority of cases, localizers only want those who play their games and read their scripts to have fun! To imply anything else is just wrong.
What I feel I can do here, to define if âthe localization is as bad as they say,â is debunk these âall or nothingâ arguments, and show that the changes arenât usually anywhere near as drastic or simple as people make them sound.
Now letâs goooooo!
I read these two articles to prepare myself to write this, link here, and link here, which I got off a quick Google search. They are from the time of Fatesâ release, and report on how a lot of people generally felt back then, so I found them to be good references to put myself back in time with the thoughts people had then.
Character Changes
These often tend to be the biggest topics of conversation. Hisame will be my topic of more detailed discussion today, but Iâll bring other characters up for a hot second too.
I can never stress this enough, but Hisame made pickles in the Japanese. He was always talking about them in the Japanese, too. (Fates loves supports revolving around food in general, really.) I think people generally know this to be true? But I did read some comments saying that the pickle love was totally made up in the localization, you can see the proof above, so I had to point it out.
I donât think a lot of people who have talked about his character picked up on this - admittedly, I didnât until someone close to me explained it - but the main gag of Hisameâs character is that heâs young, but already acting like an old man. He lectures his own father on how to behave, etc., and makes pickles. And the âacting like an old manâ is not totally lost in translation, with him still acting serious and lecturing his father. But the making pickles trait⊠Iâd never pin that as an âold manâ stereotype as a US American. Well, now I would, because I know Japanese culture well enough⊠but anyway.
And this is where the cultural differences come in. The number of people farming and making traditional foods from scratch is dwindling fast in Japan. In just five years there, I watched countless rice paddies and other small produce fields be turned into houses or apartment buildings. The elderly farmers are becoming too old to care for their crops, and their kids choose to pursue other careers, so the family sells off the farmland. Following along this trend is traditional pickle making. You can just buy them ready to eat in the supermarket, so why make your own? Most people donât even have the space to be making them if they wanted to. And so, pickle making has come to be seen as something old people do. It fits in with Hisameâs âold manâ character perfectly.
But again, as an American, I never would have figured that out without knowledge about Japan. Of course you could argue that the localizers didnât need to change anything about him. The making pickles was quirky and unique, and would give you a chuckle as is. But there was space to make him funnier, so they did. That is, after all, was what the Japanese intended, for it to be funny. Itâs not funny in the same way⊠but sometimes itâs impossible to be.
And that is what is most important in localization between two wildly different languages like Japanese and English - not retaining the same words, but the same intention or mood. The same words can convey a totally different meaning or mood, or make no sense, because of cultural differences. So localizers need to achieve the same mood, not the same words. I have come to see people understand this much better as the years go on, and the general gaming population becomes more learned about what localization is.
Of course, thatâs a pretty simplified way of looking at it. But thatâs how I summarize localization as a whole, in an easy way to understand. You might not agree with exactly how the localizers did what they did, but I think we might all be able to agree that they were trying to do their job and had no malicious intent to butcher the Japanese original or something absurd like that.
One more thing thatâs relevant to this - Japanese people donât care about repetition so much. The same character tropes are repeated over and over, the same lines are repeated over and over⊠In the US, we donât like that! Itâs boring and dull! This cultural difference is a constant struggle in localization. A lot of the people who think they want a direct translation donât realize that it will be boring to them⊠So localizations alter and add details and lines here and there to give some more variation. This also helps to explain Hisameâs changes to talk even more about pickles.
And Iâve seen many a comment from people saying they liked Hisame in the localization. They found his exaggerated pickle lines fun, and enjoyed many good laughs. How can we call his new characterization outright bad when it worked for some? When they like it more than a straight Japanese translation? Heâs still essentially the same guy⊠just some of the things he says are different. Thatâs not much of a change at all.
...And back to that original screenshot I showed. Isnât Hisame still serious in the localization? His lines are funny, but Iâm under the impression that he himself is still dead serious. ...Anyway. Thatâs about all I have to say about Hisame.
Many characters have changed lines. Thereâs no disputing that. But something to always question is how far do these changes go? Did the localizers completely change the intent or tone of the original? Or are they playing up certain character traits the characters always had in the Japanese? Or is something else going on?Â
This is also a prime example of how shallow some articles or âanalysisâ into the Fates localization are. You canât look at one line change and make a sweeping conclusion about an entire character. Always be suspect of stuff like this. Kana ALWAYS acted like a little kid. Thatâs their entire schtick. They are your cute little mama/papa loving kid. That one line may have changed that scene significantly, but Kanaâs whole character? No, not at all.
Even Kanaâs S support changes arenât as simple as it seems. They arenât all changed. The 2nd gen characters that Kana is close in age to retain their romantic endings, such as Midori. Only those considerably older than Kana turned platonic.Â
And Effie, another character commonly cited as changed? She wasnât radically changed from some deep character to a one-note workout buff. If only a conclusion could be that easy to reach. Overall, on this specific aspect of Effie, the localization simply added in extra strength or workout jokes when the opportunity arose. Some workout jokes were in the Japanese! She was always an extremely devoted retainer who was always working out and training to get stronger so she could better fulfill her duties.
What is MUCH more interesting in my opinion is the issue of her femininity. In the Japanese, her speech nearly always trailed off with ellipses, and she had feminine voice acting. Whereas in the English, all of that femininity is stripped away with a deep voice, and virtually no ellipses. How refreshing it would have felt in English for Effie to have retained that femininity! Women can bench press trees and be feminine! It would be unique to see a female character like that. ...Or so a US American might think.
But from what I understand, strong female characters in Japanese entertainment are nearly always very feminine. They send a clear message: âYou can be whatever you want in private, so long as you still fit the girly-girl mold in public and fulfill society's expectations for you!!â In the Japanese, Effie is fitting their stereotype.
So in one way of looking at it, Effie wasnât really changed, because in both Japanese and English, she paints a stereotypical and the most socially accepted image of a physically powerful female in each culture. ...Thatâs an interpretation of mine, anyway. Iâm not sure how many people would agree with it.
...See what I mean, that the answer of âchanged or unchangedâ really isnât as straightforward as âare the lines translated directly?âÂ
Looking into the deeper details creates a much more interesting picture! You come to paint a picture in your mind, without even thinking about it, of what the localizers intended to do, and you can at least understand what they were thinking. This forms a much more accurate conclusion on whether or not the team achieved a good localization, and whether or not that sacrificed the intent of the original.
So as you can see, few issues are as bad as theyâve been blown up to be. None of the characters are completely different from their Japanese counterparts, or anything so extreme. They were just localized. Whether or not they were localized well, is up to each personâs opinion.
...I do want to write about Soleil, as an example of someone who I think could have been localized better, but Iâll save that for another day. Itâs gonna get long. If anyone is interested in seeing this post, just remind me every couple of months or so until I find the time and write it, thanks in advance.
Memes
Since I mentioned Kanaâs dragon speak in the last section, this is a perfect time to transition into my feelings about memes, aka context-specific humor. I agree with the most commonly shared opinion: memes donât belong in localization. Though itâs not just because of a simple âchange from the Japanese is bad!!!!â approach. In my opinion, the best localizations will be as timeless as possible. I want my future self and everyone else who will play the game in the years to come to enjoy the game as much as possible.
Memes come in and out of fashion so quickly that theyâre almost guaranteed to be out of date by the time they release. And only the most popular of popular stories will be widely-known enough for most everyone to get the reference. Of course, itâs pretty difficult to know what expressions and such people will remember and use 10, 20, or 30 years down the line. Some language you think will be timeless will fall out of style. But using memes and references that are not likely to appeal to as many people as possible⊠thatâs one of the few things I can almost universally call âbad localization.â
Unless, of course, the game was intended in the Japanese to be a product of its time, and used a lot of references. Thatâs a whole different ball game.
Accurate translation, much less full localization, requires creative thinking to recreate the tone and intent of the original.Â
Hereâs another example that showcases another couple of things I find really important to localization.
Number 1: The writer of the article said âThe American localization ⊠gives her silly lines that arenât in the original.â But does it really âgiveâ her anything new at all? Iâd argue not. Tottemo is commonly translated as âreallyâ or something like that⊠but doesnât âsuper-dupityâ convey the same meaning as âreallyâ? Just because an English word isnât given as a common definition for a Japanese word, doesnât mean it canât be a definition. Sometimes⊠a word we donât commonly think of as a translation for the Japanese, can still be a perfectly valid translation. This is not an addition. Just an uncommon translation of the Japanese word.
Number 2: Japanese has a wide range of âIâ and âyouâ pronouns, sentence endings, and other little things that define character age, personality, gender, and more, that simply donât exist in English. To not use similar features of English when localizers find opportunities to do so, would just take away that sense of nuance the Japanese had in utilizing their languageâs own unique features.
Of course itâs one possibility that Sophie uses kiddy words. Sheâs not a little kid, but sheâs still pretty young! To have everyone use the same word choice, because thatâs how the words translate into English, is not only inaccurate to how real people talk, but also inaccurate to how the original Japanese was used. Since many equivalents for Japanese word and grammar choice that define personality do not exist in English, the localizers have to use what does exist in English in new places. I think that makes sense, and creates a much closer script to the Japanese than just translating the words.
Again, itâs all about how we look at the lines!
I see a lot of people define âtranslationâ as âone-to-one recreation of the Japanese words.â To reinforce what I said in the first section, I do not think this is true. To me, translating is recreating the same tone, mood, meaning, and message of the original. You CANNOT achieve that just by translating the words and grammar alone.
Different words conveying the same overall meaning.
This section is really just a continuation of the previous one. But reinforcing central arguments over and over again is the core of good essay writing.
So this is one of my strategies for deciding whether or not a script is a good or bad translation/localization: âDoes the script convey the same basic meaning?â (or tone, etc.)
Changes, adding detail to what the Japanese said, and âplaying-up,â are all wildly different things.
So first, I break down the bit of dialogue into as few words as possible.
-Nohr royals inherit dragon blood.
-So they have superhuman power.
...And then I look to see if the localization conveyed that same basic meaning. Which, in this case, I think it did. Your mileage may vary, but I think Iâve made my point at least.
I wanted this scene to be one of the five I addressed because I think it exemplifies yet another of the fascinating differences between Japanese and English. Japanese is a language that likes to be vague, and leave out context that is already established. Speech can seem super boring as few characters say anything unique. (At least⊠thatâs how us English speakers see it! Japanese people think they are just being normal, and not vague or boring at all!) ...English, not so much. So much as leaving out the subject of the sentence is chastised as incorrect grammar. And we like unique dialogue and prose more than most other languages.
I saw one person in the comments of the article I got this visual from argue that the tone is totally different, that the Japanese was more of a history lesson, but the localization is trying to pump Corrin and Leo up for battle, but⊠eh, I just donât see it. The English also just feels like he is describing the powers of their bloodline to me. Again, thatâs why this is so complex and fascinating, because everyone has their own viewpoints they are coming from.
The âdirect translationâ and âlocalizationâ reach the same message. This isnât a big change in my opinion at all.
Sometimes mistakes happen...
These interpretations of Saizo and Berukaâs C Support have always boggled my mind. Coming up with all these explanations as to why the omission was done on purpose to completely erase the support when⊠it just seems⊠obvious to me⊠that the localization team never wrote or programmed a translation and shipped the game with the placeholder?Â
After all, if the localization team felt they had to remove or change content that might be questionable for the target audience, wouldnât they alter or rewrite the conversation, like they have with Soleilâs supports, for example? This very game has multiple examples of proof that the localizers will rewrite entire chunks of script if they feel it makes the scene better fit what the target audience be more comfortable with.
Mistakes happen. Thatâs all I think Saizo and Berukaâs C Support is. We probably never got an update just because Nintendo doesnât have a track record of being the best with those.
Of course, I may be wrong. Nintendo and Treehouse keep pretty much all of their processes a secret. But I never, ever would have imagined on my own that Saizo and Berukaâs support was omitted on purpose. Citing this as a reason why we need to be up in arms about bad localization is so absurd to me.
Mistakes happen. Itâs not like the Japanese creators didnât have embarrassing moments with underdeveloped content in this game either⊠they didnât even name the continent in this game!
Sometimes, âbadâ localization is just human error. Itâs something we canât eliminate entirely, and will just have to accept.
Final thoughts:
I realize that this analysis, for as long as it is, is very short, and still leaves out so much that could be talked about.Â
But what I hope that it did was not really help convince readers that the Fates localization is actually good, exactly⊠but helped to create some more balance in how we look at the Fates localization and localizations as a whole. All localization changes have a reason and nuance to how they ended up happening, and itâs important to be thinking from that perspective when we discuss them!
Since I know I may have created more questions than answers, again, feel free to keep the conversation going through more asks! Iâll answer them in time!

Entry 34: Barely Even a Chapter
Fire Emblem Fates was released as a pair of games, Birthright and Conquest, with the option to download the other campaign and Revelations as a twenty-dollar DLC. Speaking of DLC, this game had a lot of it. Twenty different DLC chapters, plus the two gift ones which I refuse to count as actual chapters. Oddly enough, the final two DLC chapters were never released outside of Japan.
These DLC chapters were split into three different series. All of the DLC in the first in third series feature characters from Conquest, though, so today Iâll be going through series two.
Xenologue 9: Vanguard Dawn
This chapter doesnât really have a story. It begins with Anna, a merchant who manages the DLC players, tasking the player with defending a fortress as a challenge. This map is a recreation of Chapter 2E: Elincia's Gambit from Radiant Dawn, with the player defending against an army of tough enemies. Winning this chapter gives the Vanguardâs Brand, which allows a unit to transform into a new class based on Ike from Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn.
Xenologue 11: Ballistician Blitz
Another challenge map recreation of a level from another Fire Emblem game, this time Chapter 13: The Wooden Cavalry from Shadow Dragon. Anna shows more personality in this one, acting incredibly greedy and expecting the player to die. This map is split into three paths surrounded by forest, with an army of Balisticians, archers with massive range, gunning the player down. The reward is the Sighting Lens, which allows units to become ballisticians.
Xenologue 12: A Gift from Anna
This DLC chapter, along with Xenologues 1 and 14, is free. Which is good, because itâs an advertisement. Once per save file, opening this map will give you an option to get either a Sighting Lens or Witchâs Mark, which you can get extras of by buying more DLC!
Xenologue 13: Witches Trial
You know how this works by now. This chapter is a recreation of a map from a past game, this time Mt. Fear from Gaiden, that gives you a class item, this time a Witchâs Mark that can be used to turn units into witches, a type of mage who can teleport next to allies.
Xenologue 14: Another Gift from Anna
A repeat of Xenologue 12, this time giving either a Paragon, which boosts EXP gained, or Boots.
Now, there are some good DLC chapters in this game. But again, they feature dialogue for Conquest characters. For now, Iâm left with the recreations of maps from old games that give good items. Which are fine, but Iâd much rather spend money on Hidden Truths or Heirs of Fate, which expand the gameâs story.
Letâs do some Supports.
Support: Corrin/Subaki
C: Corrin finds Subaki training. Subaki's stomach growls. He claims that he purposely made his stomach growl to distract enemies before having a breakdown and running away.
B: Corrin finds Subaki eating like a pig to keep his stomach from growling.
A: After Subaki brushes Corrin's attempts to tell him to chill the fuck out, Corrin instead decides to be a counselor for Subaki he can talk about his obsession with perfection with.
S: Subaki comes to Corrin with another problem: he's in love with her. They get together.
Review: Not bad. The stomach growling focus is a bit odd, but Subaki brushing it off as deliberate is funny and him breaking down and admitting he isnât perfect is a nice character moment.
Support: Felicia/Hayato
C: Hayato is having trouble sleeping after hearing a spooky ghost story when he runs into Felicia, who scares him. Felicia offers to give him a special tea that helps people sleep. Also, considering the fact that every other Felicia support portrays her as being unable to make non-toxic tea, I assume it knocks people out by giving them brain damage.
B: In the morning, Hayato reveals that the tea didn't work because he's consumed so many herbs that he's immune to sleeping drugs. That explains why the game forces me to spend half of the gold I get on his opioid addiction. Felicia gives Hayato a blanket.
A: The blanket, which is soft, works. Felicia says she likes being a big sister to Hayato, who gets mad.
S: Hayato says he doesn't want to be treated like a brother, but like a man. Which makes Felicia thirsty. Like, really thirsty. They get together.
Review: Felicia helping Hayato sleep is sweet, if a bit generic.
Support: Oboro/Rinkah
C: Oboro scolds Rinkah for eating like an animal and leaving a massive mess at the table. Rinkah says it's a cultural thing.
B: Oboro teaches Rinkah to use silverware, convincing her to do so because it keeps her from wasting food.
A: Rinkah learns basic table manners.
Review: Overall this one is fine. I enjoy when Rinkah is just a brutal barbarian, although this one paints her as a bit rude.
Support: Orochi/Silas
C: Orochi warns Silas that something terrible will happen in the next battle. Fortunately, I am playing on Casual mode and Silas is thus immortal. Silas ignores her.
B: Silas survives the battle without a scratch. Orochi claims that Silas only survived because she warned him, but Silas shrugs her off.Â
A: Orochi injures herself protecting Silas from the danger she predicted. Silas asks why she predicted him after he acted like a jerk and Orochi reveals that she predicted Mikoto's death but was too slow to stop it and is haunted by guilt.
S: Silas give Orochi a wedding ring. Orochi acts like a magic eight ball and tells him to ask again later. Orochi ultimately decides to get together with him, but refuses to look into the future to see if it'll work out because some fortunes are better left unread.
Review: I really liked this one. It did a ton to expand Orochi as a character while still being really fun. The stuff about Mikoto is great and it finally answers the question of whether Orochi can actually see the future or is just a swindler: sheâs both.

2020 Recap - My Year in Gaming
2020. What a year for video games. I had big plans for last year, but in the end I did very little besides play video games, and I donât think Iâm alone there since we were all stuck at home looking for a way out of reality. I wanted to do a year-end recap as Iâve done sporadically in past years, but this one will be different than the typical âGames of the Yearâ format because despite all the games I played in 2020, almost none of them came out in 2020, and some of the things that defined my year in gaming weren't even games.Â
Resident Evil 3Â Remake (PS4)
RE3 was one of the only games I played in 2020 that didnât coincide with the deadly pandemic's spread across the US. RE3 is, of course, a game about the spread of a deadly virus in Anytown, USA. It was an appetizer, I guess.Â
When the Resident Evil 2 remake dropped in 2019, there were some things I loved about it, and a few things that felt like steps back from the original. I feel much the same about RE3. I had also theorized that a Resident Evil 3 remake would be better off as RE2 DLC than as a separate full-length game, and considering how short RE3 turned out, with some of the best sections of hte original cut entirely (namely, the clock tower), I stand by my theory.Â
Oh well, at least Jill gets this rad gun, which for the time being is the closest thing to a new Lost Planet we can hope for anytime soon.
Sekiro (PS4)
Sekiro is the first video game I ever Platinumed. This is partly because conquering the base game was such a spartan exercise that going the extra mile to get the Platinum didnât seem so bad, but itâs also surely a result of the pandemic. I needed a project and a big win. Who didn't?Â
I wrote at length about why I like Sekiro more than every other modern FromSoft game, and also about the gameâs cherry-on-top moment that reminded me of blowing up Hitlerâs face in Bionic Commando. Please read them!
Death Stranding (PS4)
Release date notwithstanding, this was obviously the Game of 2020. I wrote about it here, here, and here. This game bears the distinction of being the second one I ever Platinumed. It took 150 hours. Only then did I learn I had a hoverboard.
Streets of Rage 4 (PS4)
This is the only 2020 game I played for more than a few hours. In fact, I cleared the entire game at least five times. I still donât think it captures the gritty aesthetic of the prior Streets of Rages (nor even tries to), but this is probably the best-feeling bup I've played. Huge bonus points for finally bringing back Adam, but in the end I found it hard not to pick Blaze every time.
Blaster Master Zero 2 (Switch)
What impressed me about this sequel from Inti Creates was that it wasnât just more of the same, even though that would've been fine. BMZ2 builds on its already excellent predecessor with a catchy new format where players can freely cruise the cosmos and stages take the varied form of planetsâsome big and sprawling, others short and sweet. Hopping at will from planet to planet without ever knowing what experiences and treasure each one held felt like system jumping in No Manâs Sky and island hopping in The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, both of which felt like opening presents.
Dragon Force (Saturn)
Charming, satisfying, and addictive as a bag of chips. Unlike a bag of chips, when itâs over, you can do it all again. And again. And itâll be different each time! This might be the first strategy game I've truly loved. Better late than never.
The PC Engine Mini
The PC Engine/TurboGrafx-16 Mini seems a particularly justifiable mini-console for people outside Japan because so many missed these consoles entirely, the games are hard to obtain, and the lineup includes titles spanning the entire convoluted Turbo/PC Engine ecosystemâthe TurboGrafx-CD/CD-ROMÂČ, Super CD-ROMÂČ, Arcade CD-ROMÂČ and SuperGrafx, in addition to plain, old standard HuCard games. I myself didnât know the first thing about these systems before. Itâs like reliving the nineties again for the first time.Â
Most of the titles included are simple action games that don't require a command of Japanese, but make no mistake: being able to understand Snatcher and TokiMemo does make me feel like an elite special person worth more than many of you.Â
(Side note: From a gender representation perspective, the difference between Snatcher and Death Stranding is stark. Virtually every interaction with every woman or girl in Snatcher is decorated with ways to sexually harass her. Guess someone finally had a conversation with our favorite auteur.)
A Gaming PC
Iâd threatened to transition to PC gaming for years after beholding the framerate difference between the console and PC versions of DmC in 2012, and last July I finally took the leap, buying an ASUS âRepublic of Gamersâ (ugh) laptop with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Max-Q GPU. It seems like consoles are getting more PC-like all the time, especially with all these half-step iterations that splinter performance and sometimes even the feature set (Ă la the New 3DS and Switch Lite), so with the impending new generation seemed like a fine time to change course.
In the half-year since, Iâve barely played a single PC game more recent than 2013, but just replaying PS3-era games at high settings has been like rediscovering them for the first time.Â
I also finally experienced keyboard-and-mouse shooting and understand now why PC gamers think they're better than everyone else. Max Payne is a completely different game with a mouse. Are all shooters like this??
The USPS
Early in the year, I rediscovered my childhood game shop, Starland, which is now  an online hub known as eStarland.com with a brick-and-mortar showroom. To my delight, it has become one of the best and most modestly priced sources for import Saturn games in the country, and I scored Shining Force IIIâs second and third episodes, long missing from my collection, for a mere ten bucks each! Â
In June, I treated myself to a trio of Saturn imports from eStarland: the tactics-meets-dating-sim mashup Sakura Taisen 2, the nicely presented RTS space opera Quo Vadis 2, and beloved gothic dungeon crawler Baroque. Miraculously, this haul amounted to just around thirty dollars total. Less miraculously, they never arrived. This was the second time Iâd had something lost in the mail in my entire life, and also the second time that month. Something was wrong with the USPS, and it wasnât just COVID pains. We would soon learn Trump had been actively working to sabotage one of the nationâs oldest and most reliable institutions in a plot to compromise the upcoming presidential election.
Frankly itâs a miracle thereâs still such a thing as âdeliveryâ at all, and a few missing video games is the last of my worries considering what caused it, but nevertheless this was an experience in my gaming life that could not have happened any other year. I wonât forget it.
*By the way, USPS reimbursed me for the insured value of the missing order, which was fifty bucks. So I actually profited a little off the experience.
Mega Everdrive Pro
I love collecting for the Genesis and Mega Drive, but I will not pay hundreds of dollars for a video game that retailed for about sixty. Â The publishers never asked for that, and the developers wonât see a (ragna)cent of the money. I'm also far less inclined to start collecting for Sega CD, since the hardware is notoriously breakable, the cases are huge and also breakable, and the library just isn't that good.Â
Still, I'd been increasingly curious about the add-on as an interesting piece of Sega history, so when I learned Ukranian mad scientist KRIKzz had released a new Mega Everdrive that doubled as a Sega CD FPGA, I finally took the plunge into the world of flash carts. This has proven a great way to play some of the Mega Driveâs big-ticket rarities I will never buyânamely shmups like Advanced Busterhawk Gley Lancer and Eliminate Downâas well as try out prospective additions to the collection. I never would have discovered the phenomenal marvel of engineering and synth composition that is Star Cruiser without this thing, but now that I have, itâs high on the shopping list.
The Mega Everdrive Pro is functionally nearly identical to TerraOnionâs âMega SDâ cartridge, but slightly less expensive, comes in a ânormalâ cartridge shell instead of the larger Virtua Racing-style one, and supports a single hardworking dude in Ukraine rather than a company with reportedly iffy customer service.
Twitch
Getting a PC also resolved issues that had long prevented me from achieving a real streaming setup, and much of my gaming life in 2020 was about ramping up my streaming efforts. I even made Affiliate in about a month. Streaming has been a great creative outlet and distraction, as well as a way to connect with other people during the COVID depression and structure my gaming time. Find me every Monday through Thursday 8-11pm Eastern at twitch.tv/lacquerware. Â
Metroid: Other M (Dolphin)
PC ownership also gave me access to the versatile Dolphin emulator, liberating a handful of great Wii exclusives from their disposable battery-powered prison.Â
One of the Wii games I fired up on Dolphin was Metroid: Other M, a game Iâd always wanted to try but had been dissuaded by years of bad publicity and the fact that I never had any goddamn batteries. I know I should temper what Iâm about to say by acknowledging that I was playing at 1080p/60fps on a PS4 controller so my experience was automatically a vast improvement over that of all Wii players, but Iâm increasingly confident Metroid: Other M was the most fun Iâve ever had playing a Metroid game. I havenât decided yet if Iâm willing to die on this hill, but I will just say that if you like the Metroidvania genre in general and arenât particularly attached to the Metroid seriesâ story or its habit of making you wander aimlessly for hours, thereâs a very high chance you will enjoy Other Mâespecially if you play it on Dolphin.
Don't Starve Together (PC)
Don't Starve is the only game my friend Jason plays, so last year I tried to get into it with him. I respect this game's singular devotion to the concept of survival, but make no mistake: every session of Don't Starve ends with you starving to death. Or freezing. Or getting stomped by a giant deity of the forest. The entire game is staving off death until it inevitably comes. Even when death comes, you can revive infinitely (in whatever mode we were playing), which means even death is not an end goal. There is no end goal. You don't even have the leeway to "play" and create your own meaning as you do in similarly zen  games like Dead Rising.Â
Don't Starve is a game for people for whom hard work is the ultimate reward in and of itself. Don't Starve told me something about Jason.Â
G-Darius (PS1)
In the early fall, Sony announced they were dropping PS3, PSP, and Vita support from the browser and mobile versions of their PSN Store, and since the PS3 version of the store app runs like a solar-powered parking meter in Seattle, I decided this was my last chance to stock up on Japanese PSN gems.Â
Among my final haul, the PS1 port of G-Darius proved an instant favorite. Take down the usual cast of mechanized fish in a vibrant, chunky, low-poly style that perfectly inhabits the constraints of the original PlayStation hardware. I believe this is the first Darius game that lets you get into giant beam duels with the bosses, which is quite definitely one of the coolest things a video game has ever let you do. The PS1 port is also surprisingly feature-rich, including some easier difficulty levels that present an actually surmountable challenge for non-savants.
This oneâs coming to the upcoming Darius Cozmic Revelation collection on Switch alongside DARIUSBURST, a good-ass romp in its own right.
Red Entertainment
In my effort to shine a tiny spotlight on some of the unsung Interesting Games of gaming, I found myself drawn again and again to the work of Red Entertainment. First there were cavechild headbutt simulator Bonkâs Adventure and twin shmups Gates of Thunder and Lords of Thunder on the PC Engine Mini. Then I streamed full playthroughs of the PS2âs best samurai-era, off-brand 3D Castlevania, Blood Will Tell and the Trigun-adjacent stand-ân-gun, Gungrave: Overdose. Then I was dazzled by Bonkâs Adventureâs futuristic spin-off cute-âem-up, Air Zonk, which was also sneakily tucked away on my PC Engine Mini in the âTurboGrafx-16â section. It turned out all these games were made by the same miracle developer responsible for Bujingai, the stylish PS2 wushu game starring Gackt and a household name here at the Lacquerware estate. How prolific can one team be???
Month of Cyberpunk
In November, I started toying with the idea of themed months on my Twitch channel with âCyberpunk month.â It was supposed to be a build-up to Cyberpunk 2077âs highly anticipated November release, but holy shit that didnât happen, did it? Still, I always find myself gravitating toward this genre in November, I guess because I associate November with gloom (even though this year it was sunny almost every day). A month is a long time to adhere to a single theme, but cyberpunk is such a well-served niche in gaming that I could easily start an all-cyberpunk Twitch channel. The fact that weâre so spoiled with choice makes Cyberpunk 2077âs terrible launch all the more embarrassing. Here are just some of the games I played (and streamed!) in November:
Ghostrunner Shadowrun (Genesis) RUINER Remember Me Transistor Rise of the Dragon (Sega CD) Shadowrun (Mega CD) Cyber Doll (Saturn) Binary Domain Shadowrun Returns Blade Runner (PC) Deus Ex: Human Revolution Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Observer
Shadowrun on the Genesis gets my top pick, but the two most recent Deus Ex games are great alternatives for those looking for something in the vein of 2077 that isnât infested with termites.
Lost Planet 2
Every year. I played through it twice in 2020.
Dead Rising 4
I slept on this one too long. While it's a far cry from the original game, it's easily the most fun I've had with a Christmas game since Christmas NiGHTS. This is the game a lot of people thought they were getting when they bought the original Dead Rising with their new Xbox 360--goofy, indulgent, and pressure-free.
Devil May Cry 5: Vergil (PS4)
Vergil dropped for last-gen consoles in December and breathed a whole lot of life into a game that was already at the head of its class.
Nioh 2
Iâve only played a few hours of Nioh 2 because I promised my friend Iâd co-op it with him and wouldnât play ahead. But heâs a grad student with two small children. Nevertheless, Nioh 2 is my Game of 2020.
And that's it! Guess I'll spend 2021 playing games that came out last year, and maybe eventually getting vaccinated? Please?Â

Ys V: Lost Kefin, Kingdom of Sand review
The SNES was a console with many great RPGs. From popular classics like Final Fantasy VI, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, and Earthbound, to hidden gems like Live A Live, Terranigma, Secret of Evermore, and Shadowrun, itâs a library with a lot of enjoyment to offer. Of course, not every RPG on the system fared so well, with quite a few mediocre and forgettable games scattered about, and unfortunately, Ys V, Falcomâs second attempt at revamping their classic series, after Ys IV backtracked to using the original bump combat system, is among these. Even today, about the only notable thing about Ys V to a modern fan is the current lack of any remake, unlike IV, or the similarly flawed Ys III, which was enough to rouse my curiosity and drive me to give it a fair playthrough. While I did have some fun with it, thereâs certainly a reason there were no new Ys games for nearly a decade afterwards, and the specifics on why that is is what weâll be looking at today. Note that while Ys V was never released outside of Japan, it does have an English translation patch, courtesy of Aeon Genesis, in what was apparently one of their most difficult hacking jobs ever.
Story: About 4 years after the events of Ys I & II, Adol Christin, or, as heâs come to be known, Adol the Red, arrives at the port town of Xandria on the continent of Afroca (yes, literally just fantasy Alexandria and Africa), rather suspiciously without his constant companion Dogi, and on an intact ship, at that. The normally aimless Adol has been lured to Xandria by rumors of a mysterious Phantom City, said to contain amazing riches. After being contacted by a wealthy merchant named Dorman, however, Adol is given the truth: the so called Phantom City is actually the lost city of Kefin, a prosperous nation that wielded tremendous power five hundred years ago through the power of alchemy. Recently, the Kefin desert has been expanding, consuming many towns within the area, and monsters have become numerous and aggressive, leaving Xandria at threat of becoming a barren waste. Wishing to gain access to the secrets of Kefinâs alchemy in order to halt this desertification, Dorman hires Adol to find six elemental crystals that are said to have the power to unlock the way to Kefin. Unfortunately for Adol, he really has his work cut out for him this time; many of Afrocaâs citizens are fearful of him, due to ancient legends telling of a red haired man that will bring great havoc upon his arrival, and heâs harassed by a band of thieves called the Ibur Gang, who are out to take all the crystals for themselves. Though Adol makes several allies as well, such as Niena, the adopted daughter of the great adventurer Stein, who disappeared three years ago looking for the crystals himself, Massea, a woman who possesses knowledge of alchemy matched by few others, and Stoker, the spirit of a man who lived five hundred years ago, he also comes to find that several other forces are conspiring to use Kefinâs alchemy for their own destructive purposes, and that his client may be less trustworthy than he initially seems.
While most of the classic Ys games had quite cliche stories, if understandably considering their age, Ys V is actually a fair bit more original, with some pretty decent moments toward the end of the game. Unfortunately, before that point, most of the story just consists of just wandering around finding all the crystals, with the random interferences Adol encounters being the only things spicing it up, such as being forced to undergo a series of trials, or being blown off a raft by a sandstorm and washing up in a different town, keeping the tradition of boating accidents in Ys alive and well. Despite the amount of important supporting characters around, most of them barely even show up for most of the story, which makes for a pretty underdeveloped and forgettable cast, with only Terra of the Ibur Gang sticking out thanks to reappearing in Ys VI. It also just feels very disconnected from the rest of the series, with Dogi completely missing, and a lot of plot elements that feel out of place for Ys. According to the book Ys Complete Works, a lot of plot elements had to be left out of V, which certainly explains why it feels so underbaked, and leaves a lot of potential for improvement if a remake ever materializes, but until then, while a neat step forward for the writing of the series, Ys Vâs story ultimately just doesnât fare very well overall.
Gameplay: Hereâs where things really start falling apart. The bump combat system is gone once and for all now, with Ys V using a dedicated attack button like Ys III, a system that remains in place even today. Unlike Ys III, however, the general gameplay is still much more similar to the other titles, overhead perspective and all, with the change in combat instead feeling a lot more like the 2D Zelda titles. Along with swing his sword, Adol can also now use his shield to actively block attacks. Thereâs also a jump button, though thereâs not much platforming to be done. In theory, this isnât a bad change at all, but in practice, combat is extremely stiff and awkward feeling. Unlike in Zelda, where Link always swings with a nice, wide arc, Adol is stuck jabbing things for most of the game instead. Each sword has a different range, with exactly one that actually has a proper swing, and the ones youâll use the most, the second and last swords, only being capable of stabs. Annoying as this is, it wouldnât quite be a deal breaker, if it wasnât for how frustratingly precise you need to be when attacking. If youâre even slightly off center, youâll just whiff. Meanwhile, attacks from enemies are given far more leniency, and even using the shield, you need that same level of precision in order to block anything. Needless to say, this gets very frustrating.
Aside from just attacking physically, magic, or to be more accurate, alchemy, is also available, with spells being made by collecting elemental stones and having an alchemist combine three at a time, with six different elements and eighteen possible spells, which can then be attached to Adolâs weapon and slowly charged up until the magic meter reaches 100, at which point attacking will cast the spell and drain MP and spell charge. While a neat idea in concept, in practice, almost everything you can make is downright awful. Not only are many spells nearly identical to each other, but most of them are just really, really bad, with absurdly long casting animations, during which enemies are free to continue moving around and out of the spellâs range, wasting both your time and MP. About the only useful spells are the ones that hit everything on screen, which take an absurd amount of MP, and the basic fireball, which has no casting animation, and is mandatory to get anyway. Several enemies will also just absorb magic entirely and gain HP, so using it can often be an outright detriment. Even worse, the game basically forces you to use magic by separating EXP into two different types: physical EXP, obtained from defeating enemies with the sword, or from bosses, which boosts physical power and defense and magic EXP, which is gained from killing enemies with magic, and boosts magic power and defense, meaning if you ignore magic, any enemy using magic attacks will quickly wreck you. The stones needed to make the spells, along with a few other items like coins to be sold, are also mostly hidden across the different areas, and can only be found by rubbing up against every wall and object in sight, which is really annoying, and you really canât afford to miss any of them if you want to make most of the available spells.
Bosses are pretty dumb too, with a lot of them just coming down to standing in one places and stabbing until they die, chugging heal potions until they die, and considering the most basic healing item heals 60% of Adolâs HP, itâs not hard to do, either. In general, the game is overly forgiving. While still pretty annoying, the level system means it is pretty easy to end up overleveled with physical and magic levels combined, and rather than just dropping a set amount of gold, enemies instead drop gems, which can be sold to merchants for varying amounts. While this wouldnât make much of a difference on paper, the gems are worth so much, and certain merchants have high enough exchange rates, that you can make a lot of money pretty easily, and considering the third and second best weapons in the game are sold in the first two towns, itâs even easier to break the game wide open. Most areas are also really short, with several dungeons literally just consisting of three or four small rooms, so youâre rarely ever in serious danger traversing them, with most of their length just coming from forced backtracking. While an improvement from how grind heavy most of the early Ys games were, the easiness just makes the experience even less engaging, to the point Falcom had to make a second version of the game, titled Ys V Expert, due to complaints.
Graphics: The visuals of Ys V, to put it bluntly, barely even resemble the rest of the series, to the point itâs basically indistinguishable from any other SNES RPG. It doesnât look outright bad, but whereas Ys usually uses a super deformed style with lots of colors, Ys V uses a more realistically proportioned style with really dark, dull colors, to the point that Adolâs usual distinctive bright red hair looks more brown than anything. Most areas are pretty forgettable, with pretty generic caves and ruins, but there are a few neat areas, like the rainy marshlands, which actually carry a pretty strong atmosphere, and the bosses look kinda cool, if a bit samey. You also get to customize Adol a bit, being able to change the color of his clothes and armor in the menu, along with his hair color, if you find a hidden NPC fairly late in the game, with the default option actually giving him his usual hair color. Overall, though, the visuals are still pretty unspectacular.
Music: In yet another change from series tradition, Ys V forgoes the usual rock style of the soundtrack, and instead takes a much more orchestral approach, again making it stand out even less from its competition, only retaining a few traditions like the item collection music and the Theme of Adol. In this case, however, I canât complain that much about the change, because the resulting soundtrack, in usual Falcom fashion, is still fantastic. From the peaceful Foresta Village, to the melancholy Misty Lake, to the mysterious Oasis, to the dark Sand Castle, to the adventurous Wilderness, there are a lot of great tracks to be found, and itâs absolutely worth looking up the soundtrack even if the rest of the game would drive you away.
Conclusion: Overall, Ys V is not recommended. Itâs not an outright bad game, and can still be decently fun. Itâs short enough that itâs not much of an investment to play through, and it was still an important step that allowed Ys VI to fully modernize the gameplay of the series. As a whole though, itâs still a pretty underwhelming and clunky experience thatâs almost completely divorced from the rest of the series. Youâre not missing much by leaving it alone, and perhaps with the release of Ys IX, a remake of V could be next on the schedule. Either way, thatâs about all I can even say about this game. Till next time. -Scout

It's a sound investment and he plans to teach her about carnal pleasures to help her juices flow. What if Elias is a part-fae magus who's also a sex addict?

I don't actually know how this story began. Too much time in my head, and dealing with some dark themes that I'm working through. Being stuck inside too much can mess with your head. I also wondered what if Elias was like a raging horny beast? No one would be safe from him? Why not buy a girl at a black market that you can train to be your own personal sex toy? Yep, pretty dark. I know. But it could've happened. We didn't know why he wanted a girl the first time we read the manga or watched the anime. Tell me I'm wrong.

Chapter 1
: First NightNotes:
Chise has Stockholm syndrome, that is the only real explanation.
Chapter Text
She didnât care what happened to her, so she sold herself. Chise Hatori was soon amazed by the creature that stood above her that had paid a large sum and bought her at the auction. Dressed all in a black suit with bolo tie, and black shoes and tall, large, and intimidating, yet she wasnât afraid. She wasnât afraid of what might happen to her or body. Nothing mattered to her anymore. He, she was pretty sure it was male, had large powerful looking wolf -jaws covered by a red veil and long spiraling horns jutting out from the top of his head, perhaps he would eat her and then her miserable existence would end. She hadnât expected to be brought to a cute country cottage, nor like the lady in pink who greeted her at the door and seemed very kind. After the kind lady in pink bathed her and put new clean clothes on her, Chise was taken to the living room to sit with the man who purchased her.
âYou are very valuable,â he began to say sitting in a tall chair in long black robe, legs crossed, with the red veil still covering his large skull-face and wearing white gloves. He sat so straight in his chair it made Chise think of an English gentleman, and even his voice and way of speaking were very proper. âYou are a slay vegga. That is to say a human that is also a magical battery. Like all your kind, you'll most likely burn out soon, but until then I will keep others from hurting you or trying to eat you or use your power for themselves. I, of course, will partake of that power whenever it pleases me. Your juices are especially potent and delicious to my kind.â She could only stare at the large head as she got the impression, he truly did want to devour her, she swallowed nervously as the Lady in Pink gave her some tiny triangle sandwiches and hot cup of tea.
He waited seeming to want all of that to sink in. âI-is that why they always tried to eat me?â Chise asked quietly.
âOf course, even just your smell must have driven them quite made with hunger, but rest assured I will not eat you. I will only partake of your bodyâs fluids from time to time. You will live in relative comfort and safety the rest of your life as part of my household. All other creatures are intimidated by my power. I have barriers and wards to keep the unsavory riffraff out. I also plan to harvest some of your fluids, and hair to sell on the black market. People of the magical realm will pay handsomely for any part of you, witches, alchemists, and mages, such as myself. We can use your parts to aid our magic. As I said, you are very valuable, and I paid a great deal for you. There are not many of your kind that live to be your age and are still whole and relatively intact. I will make back 10 times what I invested in you this way. Do you understand all of this?â
She looked down at her lap and nodded. Although, not taking it all in really. Besides, sheâd already accepted any fate, even death, torture, or dismemberment as her end. âI..I understand.â
âCome,â he told her and motioned for her to come to sit on his lap. She did so, reluctantly. âHmm, you are too thin and frail. You will need many weeks of treatment before I can begin collecting samples. And I have a long waiting list of customers already. Well, they will simply have to wait,â he ran his large hands down her legs and back up to her stomach and breasts and squeezed as she squirmed. He laughed as she struggled. âChise Hatori? Have you ever had experience of the carnal variety?â he asked.
Chise blushed feeling uncomfortable for a different reason, knowing what he meant. She looked at his massive chest as she shook her head. âN-no, sir.â He laughed again his large bony snout coming close to her neck and sniffing making her cringe with recent memories of things biting, and, trying to get to her and eat her.
âI like that! How enjoyable! To be the first to break you in. My name is Elias Ainsworth. You may call me that or master, whatever you prefer,â his hands never stopped caressing Chise, but his grip was too strong for her to break away from him as she tried a few times.
âYes, Ainsworth-san...?â she replied, wondering if that was appropriate.
âHmm,â he made a deep rumbling noise inside his chest. âYes, that will do, nicely,â he said quietly as his jaw opened and a long tongue crept out to lick Chiseâs cheek startling her. Then his tongue roved down her neck causing her to gasp and try to pull away again. âIâm only teasing you, Chise Hatori.â The tip of his tongue crept under her shirt and into her bra as it moved across her nipple causing her to cringe.
As she cried out, she struggled not liking this sensation at all. No matter how she tried Chise could not break his grip, he was so strong, but suddenly the Pink Lady appeared beside her and stared at the man holding her. Ainsworth, her master, sighed and released her. The Pink Lady pulled Chise into a tight hug. It was the first true affection Chise had felt since her mother killed herself and left her all alone in the world. âArigato, um I mean thank you,â Chise told the lady. The Lady in a puffy pink old-fashioned dress had blonde hair, a pink bonnet, and white gloves. She only smiled at Chsie, but did not reply. âCan you talk?â Chise asked wondering, since she had helped her bathe and change earlier but never responded.
The Pink Lady only tilted her head with a smile and patted Chiseâs cheek with her gloved hand. âShe refuses or is unable to speak. She understands you, though. I call her the Silver Lady, she is a brownie or a creature that is bound to a location, like this house. She is more of a landlady, as it were, and keeps the house neat and clean. Thank you for reminding me, Silver Lady. Please show Chise how to prep for bed and then show her to her room.â The Silver Lady nodded and pulled Chise along with her up the stairs.
Chise was shown where all the soaps and hygiene products were in the bathroom along with a toothbrush. Afterward, Chise was taken to a room down the hall. It was large and clean with a good sized bed by the window. âIs all this space mine?â She asked the Silver Lady. She only responded by smiling and nodding. Then she showed her a set of drawers with some clothing in it. Chise let her help get herself undressed and put on a white pajama dress. âAre you sure I can wear any of these clothes?â Chise asked the Silver Lady who only nodded again.
The Silver Lady turned down the bed for her and even tucked her in and closed the window. She wagged a finger in front of her back and forth. âWhat? Don't open the window?â She nodded. âOh, okay,â Chise yawned as she settled into the soft bed. âThis is so nice and soft. I always had to share space with other kids and usually slept on the floor. Thank you, Silver Lady.â
Then Chise was alone and fell asleep quickly as she'd been through a strange and long day. Sometime during the night Chise's disturbing dreams were interrupted by a tapping sound. She woke to look around the room afraid something was coming for her. It took her a few moments to remember where she was and why. Then she heard the tapping again. She looked around to see creatures at the window with glowy eyes and wings. Pixies or Fairies is what she thought immediately. âSweet Robin, let us in! Or come play with us in the forest. All your dreams will come true. Come away with us to play before the Thorn spears the Robin! Come!â
Chise was intrigued as she sat up on her knees and looked through the glass at the creature. âI've never seen anything like you before. Sounds like a familiar promise the yokai would give to the unwary in ancient Japan.â
A deep chuckled reverberated from behind her as she looked backed, âVery wise of you, Chise, they would lead you into the forest and play with you until you died or let other creatures devour you. It is all fun and games to them.â
The little green fairy growled, âGrr, Thorn Mage, you ruin our fun! And hogging our precious Robin all to yourself. Wait till the Queen of the Fae hears about this!â
âBegone!â Elias Ainsworth commanded. And Thorny vines covered the window from the outside. Chise stared at him for a moment seeing he's veil was gone and only dimly could she see the white skull-face and two red glowing eyes.
âI-I have never seen those types of creatures before. We have a lot of kinds in Japan, but not those,â Chise said, very aware of Elias's towering presence in her room as she covered herself with her blanket.
âThey are called arials, and exist all over the world. Be assured they, nor any other fae creatures may enter my domain,â he sat down heavily on the bed. âCome,â he opened his arms for her to sit on his lap again. She hesitated a moments, but slipped easily from her covers to his lap and looked up to stare at him in the moonlight. âYou have many scars from past encounters with lesser creatures?â
âYes. They always come. Especially at night,â she said quietly.
His gloved hand gently picked up her arm and pushed pack the sleeve to see a fairly fresh wound that had scabbed over. The large skull leaned down and sniffed several times and he hummed as his tongue slipped out and he lapped at her wound. Chise's instinct was to pull away, this was strange and scary. He would not let go so easily. Then the scab was pulled off and she flinched from the pain. Fresh blood pooled there quickly. He lapped it up slowly with his tongue. His bone white jaw open wide. His glowing eyes seeming to be even brighter and fiercer in the darkness. Elias Ainsworth pulled her closer and held her tighter as he made noises. Chise wondered if they were from pleasure. âOh, Chise! You are delicious! I will have a hard time stopping myself. It is like...a drug. You are quite intoxicating.â
As the slow lapping continued, Chise squirmed and gasped but knew it was no use to try to get away. And anyway, what did it really matter if he devoured her.?Soon his tongue had moved from the wound and began inching it's way toward her neck. One of his gloved hands tugged her night gown down off her shoulders to reveal her pale skin and small breasts. His tongue found it's way there and wrapped itself around her nipples. Beneath her lap she could feel something poke through his pants making a tight tent.
Chise began to make noises. At first, in protest because the sensation was so weird and intense and she didn't like it. Soon she found the continual licking of her breasts made her feel something new. Something she'd never felt before. She felt a warmth start to spread in her body. She grabbed at his robe and held on with tight her fists. His tongue moved back up her neck slowly and then got to her mouth. âOpen your mouth, Chise,â he said quietly. She did so and was shocked when he inserted his tongue into her mouth as his large jaw moved closer to her face. She tried to pull back but his gloved hand came up to hold her head still. His tongue sought hers.
At first she was disgusted, but as his tongue massaged hers gently she began to relax. It wasn't completely unpleasant. She let her tongue timidly reach for his making him gasp. He made deep moaning sounds as his hands caressed her back and bottom, and then slowly, almost reluctantly, he withdrew.
Elias Ainsworth closed his jaw and looked down at his plaything. Her face was wet with his saliva and her nightgown was disheveled. He chuckled at her. âYour face is red, and your pulse has quickened. I think you will be a fast learner. Have you ever touched your privates to bring youself pleasure?â She looked away embarrassed by the question, and shook her head. He replaced her nightgown to its rightful place. And moved her back to the bed as he began to straighten his clothing. âWell, goodnight, Chise,â he said, walking to the door and opened it.
Standing there was the Silver Lady. She was looking very concerned as she looked past Elias over at Chise. âShe has not been harmed, nor deflowered, yet. I assure you, Silky.â The Silver Lady looked at him and nodded as they both backed out her Chise's room. She heard footsteps heading away from her door. Chise relaxed then feeling her ordeal was over for tonight. Her body still hummed with the sensations that man or creature had brought on her body. She felt her breasts tingle. She reached out to touch them and they still felt very sensitive to the touch. She felt between her legs and felt more moisture than usual. She'd never felt this way before.
Chise had expected to have strange experiences in her new life after auction, but nothing like this. It was not what she'd expected. And her owner was not what she'd expected. Was this her new life? She wasn't getting attacked and bitten by random creatures she mused. However, this man, Ainsworth-san, might be the one to bite and molest her from now on. Not that it mattered to Chise really, nothing mattered, she reminded herself.
Chise lay back down and covered herself to get some sleep. As she was drifting off to sleep she heard strange sounds. Someone was moaning. It sounded like Ainsworth-san. They were the sounds similar to the ones he'd made when he was licking her and clearly enjoying himself. Another voice joined his in their moans, a female voice. Chise also heard rhythmic thumping. Chise wondered what that was. She listened carefully for awhile to see if it would go away. It was clearly not coming from outside, but from inside the house. Chise got up from her bed and walked to her door. She opened it just a crack, but saw nothing in the darkened hallway. Across from her was another door and underneath she saw light and shadows moving to the rhythm of the thumping.
A moment more and a loud groan echoed from the room into the hall, and the thumping stopped. Chise heard the door handle turn. âThank you, Silver Lady,â said Ainsworth-san as the Silver Lady stepped out of his room. She was fixing her bonnet and pushing down her dress. She nodded to him as she quickly made her way down the hall and down the stairs. Chise didn't know what to think. What had just happened? âGoodnight, Chise, please get some rest,â he told her as he moved back into his room and closed his door. Chise went back to bed with many unanswered questions floating in her head.
