Today marks 112 years of the Sinking of the Titanic.
Something about this ship has a chokehold on me.
Maybe it's the stories, the well-known ones, and the ones less well known. Heroism and Cowardice.
Maybe it's the hubris of believing we'd beaten the ocean.
Maybe it's the fact it's a massive part of Irish History
Maybe I love the film an insane amount
Maybe it's how gorgeous she still is despite 112 years under the sea.
Or maybe it's the fact my dad had many books and it's always been something I can share with him.
Whichever way, Titanic is a part of my life, that may be weird but hey, there are worse things to be hyperfixated on.
Anyway, 1517 died 112 years ago because, amongst other things, Money and appearance meant more than lives.
Surprising how that never changes.

In the first part, I discussed all the reasons why the Titanic was doomed to fail, in this episode, I get into the major players behind the tragedy. I also discuss the tragedy of the Titan, five curious tourists wanting to get a view of the century old wreck and died simply due to a lack of care and real scientific know-how behind the building of the Titan submersible, as well as the aftermath a year later. Before continuing this episode, please go back and listen to part one of the Unsinkable Titanic.
Thanks to Mike Meyers for the theme music, you can follow him on X @themikeshow42.
The background music of this episode is “Nearer My God To Thee”, this particular version is done by Bernhard Schuermann https://tinyurl.com/4my5b8dn a soulful and achingly beautiful song that played as the Titanic sank.

Olympic-Class : Big Four Andalan White Star Line

We couldn't let #WomensHistoryMonth go by without sharing the fascinating story of stewardess Violet 'the Unsinkable' Jessop. Violet's parents emigrated from Ireland to South America and upon her father's untimely death, the remaining family moved to England where her mother became a stewardess. When her mother could no longer work, Violet stepped in to provide for the family, embarking on a maritime career that would span 42 years and include over 200 ocean voyages. In 1911, Violet began working for the White Star Line on board the RMS Olympic. She was on the ship on September 20, 1911 when it collided with the warship HMS Hawke in the Solent. At age 24, she began work on the #Titanic with 23 stewardesses and 322 male stewards. Violet survived the sinking because a young officer encouraged her to get into Lifeboat 16 to demonstrate how it was done to reluctant passengers who didn't speak English well. She even rescued a baby and reunited the child with its mother on board the #Carpathia. Within three weeks of the Titanic sinking, she was back to work on the Olympic. During #WWI, she served on the HMHS #Britannic as a nurse. On the morning of November 21, 1916, there was an explosion caused by an underwater mine or a U-boat torpedo. The 'Unsinkable' Violet Jessop was the only survivor from her lifeboat. The Britannic sank in 50 minutes and 1,035 survivors were eventually rescued. TITANIC; SUPERSTARS AND SCAPEGOATS BOOK. JAMES MOODY...
"All of the horrors at sea seem to happen at night..."
James Paul Moody wrote those fateful words in a letter to his sister, just a few years before his appointment as Sixth Officer of the RMS Titanic.
Scarborough born James was just twenty- four years old at the time of the Titanic disaster. As a junior officer, he should by rights have left in one of the lifeboats to oversee the small, quietly bobbing armada as it evacuated the sagging ship.
Being all too conscious of just how few, trained seamen were left on board the fatally compromised Titanic, Moody instead stayed behind, labouring manically at the boats in a brave, doomed attempt to save every last life on board.
James Moody was last seen by surviving Second Officer, Charles Lightoller. He describes seeing Moody on the roof of the officer's quarters, attempting to cut the ropes on a brace of collapsible lifeboats that were kept in place there.
His body was never recovered. James Moody's sacrifice was needless and noble in the same, searingly poignant instance.
After writing my book, I gradually came to understand that the chapter on this incredibly selfless and heroic young man had affected me by far the deepest of them all...

For over a century, we have found ourselves utterly fascinated by the story of the great, Unsinkable Titanic and the tragic demise it met on the Atlantic Ocean. But why, exactly are we so obsessed with this ship? Especially since there have been dozens, if not hundreds of other shipwrecks that have occurred since and before then. Yet, we are drawn again and again to the tragedy of the Titanic.
On April 10th, 1912 the Titanic set for its maiden voyage across the ocean from Southampton, England to New York City, but it didn’t make it there. Instead the ship and over 1,500 passengers met their terrible demise at the hands of a mercilessly frozen sea. Not only has this tragedy caused individuals to seek out its remains at the bottom of the ocean, it has also has made its way into the media, in all sorts of iterations, but there is so much more to this story.
It wasn’t just the carelessness of the crew on deck, or the lack of lifeboats, it was a number of factors that lead to the Unsinkable Titanic, becoming the sinkable Titanic.
Thanks to Mike Meyers for the theme music, you can follow him on X @themikeshow42.
