Reposted from @whitecube White Cube New York is pleased to present ‘Hold Me, Hold Me, Hold Me’, an exhibition by #TheasterGates.
[On view January 26 - March 2, 2024]
Join us for an evening preview from 6–8pm on Thursday 25 January 2024 to celebrate the opening of the artist’s solo exhibition.
Across sculpture, painting and installation, the artist creates a series of material pairings indicative of musical harmonic devices.
Shifting the ideology of art from visually based to metronomic, the exhibition explores the darker resonating tones that articulate how sound holds pain and suffering, joy and temporality, memory and contingency.

Reposted from @theastergates Hold me, hold me, hold me, hold me. Mid-way through the song, #BeRealBlackForMe, this is what #RobertaFlack and #DonnyHathaway say to each other. This refrain moves me so deeply. The harmony associated with this refrain is a portal of vulnerability. The call to love, togetherness and tenderness epitomizes the music of this duet and the individual musical intentions. Hold me was holding up the black experience of the 1970s! I have a desire to capture certain moments and not let them go; to hold memory, touch and color and hear these characters in my body. My show at @whitecube is a reflection on these ideas. I'm invested in the way sound and time are synced, emotion and place are inseparable and power and color exalt each other. I keep thinking about Donny and Roberta and their friendship, soul music's tragedy, Johnson publishing's ubiquitous potency, making and mental health. This project is about so many things for me. Sometimes, I don't know exactly how to calibrate my intensities, but I hate coding for others. If you find yourself in nyc, come see the work.

Week 11 (Qn1) Creating a manifesto
We started drafting a manifesto in week 11. I've discovered that having a manifesto with distinct goals helps make things easier to understand. It can foster a feeling of community and identity and has a long-lasting influence on design and other creative industries. It is also an effective tool for design transformation and communication.
Having said that, here are some of my core principles and beliefs that drive my design philosophy and being important to the different design practices.
The principles are:
(Communication) In design, communication is essential. It allows clear communication and comprehension of objective preferences and limitations. Making sure that everyone is on the same page and working cohesively towards a goal which helps in team collaboration.
(Embracing curiosity) The inspiration for creative designs comes from a curious mind. It improves the creative process and produces more responsible and productive results.
(Simple and effective) Complexity is not necessary for good design. In my opinion, it is sufficient to have a simple and easy-to-understand design. Unnecessary complexity can hinder workflow and make it difficult for users to comprehend why certain elements are included.
(Attention to detail) A keen eye for detail is critical since it can result in higher standards of consistency, professionalism, and quality. I believe that when you design something, paying attention to detail communicates a feeling of self-care.
(Self-reflection) Reflection of oneself can support ongoing development. An example would be to review my previous work and consider how I may make improvements and identify places where changes are required. Reflecting about oneself may also be a creative process.
As you can see, my manifesto and the group manifesto are similar because I do agree with their areas of agreement and think they are significant. But I would like to add one more point to the manifesto explaining its importance.
(Inclusivity) This is a crucial topic, in my opinion, since inclusive design may help all kinds of people. Creating user-friendly design is one example. One resource to consider is the book "The design in everyday things," which delves into the design of everyday products and highlights the significance of user focus and usability.
That said, I believe that week 9 of the CTS-B is really important for me since it helps me with all the many modules that we are completing. We presented ourselves and our representative work, focusing on our creative interests. Engaging others in a discussion about our works allows us to reflect and effectively share our thoughts.
Referring back to the week 9 topic, "How do I speak about my work?" I believe that by taking my audience's viewpoint into consideration and trying to engage them, I can work to my advantage in the studio when it comes time to present our concept system.

Ladywell, Imagined
Connectconnectconnect I still dislike dogs most of the time Ladywell, Imagined Somewhere in a small room on the ground floor of a whitecube gallery, a video installation is playing on a 10 minute loop. There's minimal sound to it, just the low diegetic hum of a park in the early hours. It depicts a misty, shrubbish space. As I acclimatise to the room and focus on the video properly, I see a figure in it that's meant to be me crouching down, peering through the thickest part of the thicket. The image is so clichéd and blue tinted, The colour grading is so documenta, So Kassel Wilhelmshöhe, so blue, Dark, blue and thick It's doing that thing all these videos seem to-- it's Got a smaller frame within the main frame. Except, I soon come to realise that the small frame can move outwith the big one, tacking itself onto my real field of vision, sticking to me right as I first set eyes on the screen. Now, every waking moment is a screen upon a screen depicting a loop of imagined Ladywell. The loop gets ever shorter until it's a gif like fluttering of frames, Transported everywhere by my swivelling eyes The figure (me) gets so motion sick He/it starts to vomit. "I am so unwashed I am so filthy I am sick vomit and dirt I am so bunged up Ladywell, I stink I am filthy I am sick I am unwashed"

"Richard Hunt: Early Masterworks, the second largest exhibition of the artist's work in New York in over 50 years," is on view at @whitecube through tomorrow, April 13th.
📍White Cube Gallery
1002 Madison Avenue #NYC
Reposted from @whitecube / @richardhuntsculptor In 1971, Richard Hunt achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first African American sculptor to have a landmark retrospective at MoMA, New York with a presentation of works from 1955–71.
This show at White Cube New York mirrors that time span, including the restaging of several works that were presented in his MoMA retrospective.
Several rarely exhibited works from the artist’s personal collection, including ‘Hero’s Head’ (1956), a pivotal sculpture made in response to the murder of Emmett Till, feature in the show.
"[Richard Hunt's] attendance at the Till funeral nearly 70 years ago helped establish the course for his career." - New York Times
When Richard Hunt was 19 years old, he witnessed the open-casket funeral of Emmett Till in Chicago. Till, who was abducted, tortured, and lynched in Mississippi in 1955, had grown up only two blocks from the Woodlawn home where Hunt was born. Till's mother, Mamie, decided to have an open casket for Emmett, and images of his mutilation circulated the world to show the torture and violence conducted on her son. Hunt would later remark, "What happened to [Till] could have happened to me." Hunt went on to create art shaped by this experience, which influenced both his artistic expression and his commitment to the cause of Civil Rights.
"[The sculpture] Hero's Head, 1956, is what I would call my response to Emmett Till," says Richard Hunt. "I was there with my mother and father, my sister, and my cousin who was part of the family . . . [Emmett Till's] remains are there at the church. Till's mother had an open casket. It was obviously something to respond to."
