Rewatched. It’s extremely rare for Chinese shows, much less Chinese animated movies, much less Chinese action movies, to wholeheartedly centre female characters, their relationships, and their sheer power. (I emphasise “wholeheartedly” and “sheer power”, because many dramas involve some female characters exerting power but in a constrained way—they are fighting to survive in the patriarchy. This movie is not that.) Adding to the rarity is the fact that the movie snubs men hard for bad behaviour. It amazes me. I don’t know how the (male) director and scriptwriter came up with this and got it approved by regulators. But I fully support their creative effort and hope to see more movies like this.
🐍 Review of 白蛇2: 青蛇劫起 White Snake 2: The Tribulation of the Green Snake
Tumblr media
I enjoyed the movie a lot!
Spoiler-free points:
• Strong female protagonist and female characters 👭
• The movie is a kaleidoscope of action 🏎 and fight scenes 🥋 with absolutely stunning animation 🌈. Fast-paced.
• Plot twists
• Need cultural context/knowledge (just the basics of 1. the legend of the white snake and 2. Asura realm) to fully appreciate it.
• It’s not necessary to have watched White Snake 1 to understand this movie. White Snake 2 is premised more on the legend than it is premised on White Snake 1.
(Not entirely related to the movie, but I once saw pictures drawn by Ren Shuaiying 任率英 that told the legend in a way that celebrated the women and ignored Xu Xian in favour of ending with something along the lines of: “And so, Bai Suzhen and Xiao Qing lived happily ever after.” 😏)
Other points with mild to moderate spoilers:
• Some way into the first half of the movie, it looked like it was falling into the stereotypical “female character needs men to save her” and “alpha men are desirable” pit holes, but then events led the protagonist to conclude that men are trash and unreliable so she must become more powerful herself to get what she wants. And she did.
• Mythical women getting the spotlight they deserve
• Love, of the sort that involves unfailing loyalty, straddles friendship and romance, and spares little thought for sexual orientation because the only thing that matters is the person who is loved
• I really like how the creators put their own spin on Fa Hai while staying true to the portrayal of him in the myth by making him perform a highly questionable act in the name of goodness, in addition to what he does in the legend. That guy’s holy principles are distorted and it’s great that the movie makers highlighted that. (Of course, I’m talking about the mythical character, not the historical figure.)

Done (heavy quotation marks) with monster Ody @evergreen292 ;)
tbh I couldn’t for the life of me pick a color palette I liked And Render it so I gave up on color. Enjoy the half assery.
Tbh I’ve just been call it Ithacan Naga, but it’s objectively it’s a mix of snake, owl/bird, and human. So 🤷.
Tbh the wings are supposed to be white/gray-brown, cause owls & Hermes, while his scales are supposed to be an oscillating scale from sea green-blue to purple-tinted gray. Uhm. Evidently that sorta didn’t happen but also did. So.
The purple/grayer scales are gonna be more around with the feathers and wings.
Those fin colors are. Too blue and too bright but I love the colors themselves so they’re staying for now.
Uhm. That’s it for now, ig. I’m sorta on a timer rn and I’m tired so <3
The writing bit with this is still in the works (😭)
#Odysseus#epic the musical#Ithacan naga au#guess that’s what we’re calling it#an Ithacan naga would deadass just be an aquatic naga#I think#the feathers and wings are cause he’s Zeus/Hermes’ kin & Athena blessed#tbh the main reason i wanted to color at all is cause I wanted easier differentiation between… everything. and actually draw the scales.#so snakes have this extra (?) bone that connects their skull & jaw which is what lets them extend it. so. ody gets that here.#resting/casual naga ody is like. 7ish ft? anything intimindation or just rising usually reaches 11-12 ft. his full length js 20 ft#naga eyes don’t have any eyelids. it looks very odd on a human (unsettling)#owl eyes don’t really have visible white scelcra#or however you spell it#nor do snakes#unsettling#maybe I’ll caption this later but hhhhh#he’s sorta supposed to be an olive sea snake and fish owl#but fuck colors rn#uhm cause he’s aquatic I suppose he does have to make up with Poseidon… uhm let’s say after everything Seidon picks up a fuss and Athena#argues back n everything and it causes a reallllly big fuss so Zeus (+ others) eventually work smth out that basically amounts to:#Don’t fuckin bother each other (intentionally)#also endgame for naga ody (he can change back and forth dw) is that he gets used to it. he doesn’t advertise it cause he’s sneaky like that#(and after he gets over the self loathing). uhmmm. yeah. It’s great cause NEREID PEN and SEA NAGA ODY#they can go on sea hunts together!!!!#ody CAN fly yes. same logic that lets Hermes fly with 2 small pairs of wings on his ankles and head.#he folds the wings when swimming and the fins fan out underwater. vice versa. his feathers are waterproof.#you can BARELY see the vauge shape of thighs/legs melting into the serpent part btw.#Ari’s art#my art#I’mma add onto this + actually type this out in a post later or smth

Summary:
500 years after Sun Wukong's (Aaron Kwok) imprisonment under the Five Fingers Mountain, a young Buddhist monk Tang Sanzang (Feng Shaofeng) sets out for a journey to the Thunder Monastery in India to collect Buddha's scriptures. When he is attacked by a tiger, he is forced to free Wukong and the Monkey King learns that he has to protect the monk throughout the journey, because the Bodhisattva Guanyin ensured he would be bound by an enchanted circlet that can cause him pain whenever Tang Sanzang chants a certain sutra. Soon the duo meet Zhu Bajie (Xiaoshenyang), a lustful pig demon, and Sha Wujing (Him Law), a djinn-like monk. He fights a dragon, defeats it and transforms it into a horse as his mount.
The company travel to the Yun Hai Xi Kingdom, a land terrorized by the White Bone Demon (Gong Li) who has been eating people in order to extend her unnatural life and avoid the Wheel of Reincarnation. As the demoness learns about Sanzang, she decides to eat him in order to stop her reincarnation cycle and achieve everlasting demonhood. She takes the appearance of an old woman and lures the group into a cottage in the woods. To prevent Wukong from using his truth-seeking eyes to see through her disguise immediately, she throws tainted dust into his eyes that clouds his sight. Then while her disguised minions keep Wukong, Bajie and Wujing occupied, the demoness tells Sanzang a story about how she was forced to marry as a young girl, and when her village suffered famine, the people blamed her for it, even calling her an evil demon, and attempted to kill her as a sacrifice to the gods. As Tang comforts the old lady, she attempts to kill him, but is stopped by Wukong. The demoness escapes before Wukong can deal the killing blow and leaves the dead body of the old lady behind. Sanzang and the others don't believe Wukong that all the women he murdered were demons, and blame him for killing the innocent. Sanzang punishes Wukong by chanting the sutra and causing the circlet to tighten painfully on his head. Afterwards, Sanzang climbs to the top of a mountain where Wukong is sulking. Sanzang tells Wukong he thinks they are both very alike, for they both only trust what their own eyes sees. But together, they are better able to discern the truth. This is why they were all chosen to be on this journey together.
The group arrives to the kingdom's capital and the King (Fei Xiang) throws a feast for them, begging Sanzang to exorcise the bloodthirsty demoness from their land. Suddenly Lady White appears and demands the monk, but he offers her his help in enlightenment instead. She tells Wukong that they are both very alike, and tries to persuade Wukong to let her devour the monk, but he deceives her instead and a fight ensues. During the chaos, the King's guards kidnap Sanzang. It is revealed that it's actually been the King kidnapping and killing the children in a desperate attempt to cure himself of a cursed disease by drinking their blood. He tries to kill Sanzang, but Wukong arrives and saves the monk and the surviving children as well. All of the group are celebrated as heroes, but as a little girl approaches Sanzang, Wukong beats her and her mother to death as well, because his truth-seeking eyes perceive both were possessed by the White Bone Demon. In a fit of anger and disbelief, Tang banishes Wukong away. As soon as Wukong leaves, Sanzang gets kidnapped by the demoness.
In the demoness' lair, the White Bone Demon gives Sanzang a day to convince her to give up her evil ways and embrace nonviolence and enlightenment as the true path to immortality. She reveals to him the story she had told him earlier was true, recounting her previous life as a mortal. Right before Sanzang's time is up, he is saved by Wukong at the last minute. Wukong, Bajie and Wujing fight the White Bone Demon and her army and finally defeat her, with Wukong mortally wounding her. The Buddha comes down from the Heavens to collect the defeated demoness' soul and banish it to oblivion but Sanzang pleads Buddha to grant her mercy and give Sanzang one last chance to save her soul from destruction. Buddha tells him that he would have to lead her on the path herself, meaning he would have to sacrifice his own life. The monk begs the demoness to show remorse and accept the Wheel of Reincarnation, but the White Bone Demon would rather die as a broken tainted soul in Sanzang's body instead of returning to the Wheel of Reincarnation. Saddened, Tang begs Wukong to kill him, too. The Monkey King refuses at first, but Sanzang explains how he used to think he just had to recite Buddha's teachings to convince people to become good. Now he understands he must also lead by example and do good in order to convince people. Sanzang had to do this for his own journey towards enlightenment. Wukong finally understands the monk's desire to help the demoness change her fate, and tearfully agrees, promising Sanzang to wait for his return. Wukong brings his staff down and Sanzang's body is changed into a statue. In return Sanzang says if he gets a chance to do so in his next life, he would be glad to be Wukong's master again. Because of Sanzang's sacrifice, he succeeds in leading the demoness to her next reincarnation, freeing her of her pain and hatred.
Some time later, Wukong and his friends still wait for the return of the monk, but continue their journey to the Thunder Monastery. Wukong rides on Sanzang's horse with Sanzang's statue strapped to his back. From Heaven, Guanyin drops a bead of water from her magic vase that falls to earth and hits right at Sanzang's hand. The surface cracks, revealing a human finger underneath.

i really wanted lynx to kill king snake in war of the dragons
redesigned her look a little:
Tumblr media
notes + ref below
alt:
Tumblr media
i adapted the dialogue from 'tec #685
Tumblr media
i thought lynx's outfit was boring here though and adapted the outfit from her earlier appearances (modified the leotard but kept the short hair. what's up with leotards in 90's comics??)
she also doesn't actually have a push dagger, but that was the only thing i could think of to make the panel work
i also used photos of current UFC strawweight division champion weili zhang as refs bc i wanted lynx to have that mma fighter build (i should also note that i don't believe king snake should have abs but he doesn't deserve a character sheet)
@deepwithintheabyss requested a panel redraw of the panels below, from DC vs Vampires, and this is not that lol -- but i did use them as refs!

Plotting out "Tam Lin" (Disney movie)
Tumblr media
Link to the summarized post-renaissance rewrite here. My original concept for this was a bit different, so I'll probably edit that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Background: Michael Eisner is NOT as bad as the OTL when it comes to business-making decisions, so the corporate struggle between him and Roy E. Disney is avoided and he allows for Disney to make the film. That said, the decision to make it a musical is met with some trepidation, as this is the fourth musical in a row (if you recall, "Brother Bear" is a musical here, followed by Rumplestiltskin and a musical version of "The Chronicles of Narnia"), but since they've all been successful and it'd be seen as weird for them to make a fairy tale without it being a musical, they go forward with it. As such, Roger Allers co-directs it with Kevin Lima, story imput is provided by Brenda Chapman, and Tim Rice and Alan Menken come in to do the music. To further distinguish the film from previous musicals, a clear setting is used, taking the Scottish setting of the original tale. The protagonist was originally going to be given red hair, but Disney opted against it, wanting Ariel to be unique in that regard for a while longer, and they decided to give the protagonist darker hair instead.
Plot
Tumblr media
A young noblewoman left destitute attempts to catch a unicorn guarding a forest that she had been told held no life. The unicorn prevents her from entering, but in her dreams, she sleepwalks to the forest and finds herself trapped. The queen of the elves intends to make her her slave, and the young woman must find a way to evade her and free her soldier, who knows all her secrets (including a way to escape), from her grasp.
Characters
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Máirín--A cunning young woman whose family is left destitute, she attempts to find a suitor in order to bring money back into the family, but is is rejected. On her way home, she sees a unicorn appear on the outskirts of a forest, and she tells to coachman to stop so she may approach it. The unicorn leads her to a thistle bush, and she picks some at it's behest. The unicorn prevents her from entering the forest, and when she arrives home, she dreams of a fairy queen who laughingly invites her back to the forest. Waking up, she realizes she is now inside the woods, and must work together with the elf in order to escape the forest and defeat the queen's hold over him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sachairi--The royal guard of the queen, he was once a king's knight who had the misfortune of entering the woods by accident on a dark knight, his horse and body being encased in thorns and tortured until his mind was given to her. He is her royal confidant, a seemingly thoughtless creature, as the fairies have used him mainly for their amusement and change him into all manners of things at their whims (including a unicorn), he still retains some autonomy, with his interactions with other humans bringing him back to his right mind, if for a while. He is originally aloof, but it's revealed that his traumatic experiences have made him reserved and somewhat shy, though Máirín's resilience matched with a deceptiveness that can rival the fairy court makes him believe she could be the one to save him. At times, he is able to cast his own magic, and takes the form of a red calf to spend time with Máirín and away from the cruel fairies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aileana--The queen of the fairies who has ruled the vast woods for hundreds of years. While fairies by nature have similar morality to humans, she is often appealing to her more malevolent side, using her magic to manipulate and entertain herself at the expense of humans, and sometimes her own kind. After capturing Sachairi, a royal knight, she expected to bag herself a king at some point, but it seems that no one knows where he's gone, or simply hasn't noticed. No matter. Breaking the human mind is a delectable experience that Aileana takes pride and joy in doing. When Máirín gets her attention, Aileana has plans to break her mind as well, particularly due to her obstinate character. But when she makes a miscalculation by tasking Sachairi with observing her in the forest, she fails to realize that she put both her greatest weapon and her greatest weakness in the palm of her enemy's hands.
Songs
Nothing Gained--Máirín bemoans her situation: her family is recently impoverished, and all eyes fell to her to rectify the situation by getting married. However, with no dowry and her assertive personality, she has no luck. While she states that her family has only found her "weak men," it's revealed that she also is a social climber and somewhat manipulative, and it's implied that her suitors picked up on this with time and this contributed to her rejection. The only consolation to all these rejections has been her ability to travel and explore.
The Ballad--After returning home and telling her family about the unicorn (and a bit about her recent rejection), her grandmother tells her a story about the woods she almost entered, and how all those who go inside the forest never return, and their spirits haunt their relatives who are still alive. The queen of the forest is said to take particular interest in beautiful humans.
Dance With Me--Máirín dreams of dancing in the woods with the fairies as the queen watches her with glee. The song ends so abruptly that it takes a moment for Máirín to realize that she's woken up in the middle of the forest in the dark of night.
One Night--In a momentary slip from Aileana's grasp, Sachairi's mind is his own again, and he informs Máirín that during a full moon, she should challenge Aileana to a game, one in which if Máirín wins, she and Sachairi will be free of her grasp and free of the forest.
Safe in the Woods--Aileana, sensing something is amiss when Máirín challenges her to a game, peers into her mind, seeing her unhappiness, and telling her that if Máirín throws the game, Aileana will name her princess of the fairies. Máirín contemplates this, especially considering that the forest always seems to change, and the fairies are all beautiful, interesting, and enticing.
Never Enough--Máirín fights with Sachairi following her contemplation to take Aileana's deal, and Sachairi confesses his feelings to her, his hope to be free now fading.
Time's Up--The game is here; the fairies will transform Saichairi into a number of things, and Máirín must not run from him no matter what. She must face him for five minutes, but the deal Aileana made is still in her mind. She must decide what she wants from life, especially since there's not just her life on the line.
Hope you enjoy this! Since I'm only making posts about original films from the post-renaissance era, I decided against making a "Chronicles of Narnia" post since I'd want the writing to pretty much parallel the 2005 film (except make Edmund slightly less cruel), so "Night and Day" is my last post for this era! Lemme know if you have any questions.
