was watching a youtuber whose videos i generally enjoy and overall they made a lot of excellent + important points in this video but then she had a quippy line about wyll "only being tolerable when made gayer" and god, i just got so irritated

"#........this is probably the most anyone's ever thought about the next doctor" sdlfjaghjrkl camila. i rewatched it a few months ago (after rewatching all the good dw episodes) and while i won't pretend to have had Deep Thoughts about it, my takeaway was that it's a rare L from rtd on the gender politics front. there's very little acknowledgement of how gender (and race!) color the relationship between jackson and rosita (who ends up being a pretty fringe character), and despite a few allusions to hartigan's past, she's a pretty one-note "woman driven mad by power" villain. and the setting of famously sexist victorian england is more set dressing than anything else

sobs i think i agree with u but aghhh like it's so hard to just accept that a dw episode may just be bad lol i feel like it could so easily *say* those things about race and gender and the ~glamorized british past~ bc like, all the ingredients are there! there's lines hinting at it!! but idk if maybe rtd thought it would be too much of a downer for christmas, at the end of the day it does feel like set dressing, but i feel there's a jewel in that carbon, it just needed more sanding...
