Took the dogs for a late afternoon hike today. Lots of leaves and the smell of autumn on the air. The first half of the hike was uneventful. On the last mile we saw a hunter in a tree stand (okay, I saw the hunter. Sven thought I was talking to him when I said hello), the back end of a fleeing whitetail deer, and another hikers with a dog.

One day I’d like to get a White German Shepherd (or a white dog) and name him Bolt. I wouldn’t like traumatise him or anything like what happened to Disney’s Bolt, I wouldn’t even paint a lightning bolt on him, but I WOULD teach him to ‘speak’ with the command “Super bark” and watch the film at least once a week with him.

Throwback to when Kaine and I were both wee lads

In Hampstead, MD: Meet Ace, he is a 6 yr old, 136lb.

( needs to loose 15lbs) neutered, up to date on DHLPP, Lepto, Lyme, Rabies and heartworm.

This handsome black and tan guy is great with strangers, children and shows no interest in cats or chickens and ducks.

He is professionally trained and knows many

advanced commands like “place”. He can even open doors.

He is house trained.

Ace has a very strong ball drive.

Bella is an unbelievably sweet white shepherd. She is great with other dogs, loves people and children, cats, chickens and ducks.

This beautiful 5-year-old girl weighs

86 lbs, is spayed, up to

date on all vaccines and heartworm.

She knows some basic obedience and is house trained.

Bella and Ace will jump up when excited.

Both are good on leash.

They are not completely bonded and are ok being separated.

Ace is fine without another dog but Bella needs a dog best friend.

They are located In Hampstead Md.

Their person is very sick.

RIP Dexter March 17th, 2013 - September 7th, 2024

Dexter was a rescued dog, adopted at two years old from a neglectful owner. I didn't know what I was getting myself into when he arrived at our house -- he was taller and more wild-looking than our previous German Shepherds -- but he ended up being gentle, obedient, and eager to please.

Despite being locked in a cage for a few months by the previous owner, and arriving in very poor condition, Dexter quickly got used to running freely and became impressively athletic. In his prime, he was keeping pace with deer and catching birds out of midair.

While he didn't usually get along with other dogs, he loved children and was an excellent babysitter. In fact, he was perfectly compliant with nearly anyone, including the vet. After a life-saving bloat surgery shortly after his arrival, Dexter seemed to realize that the vet was there to help him, and was always happy to go in for his checkup.

He was also uncannily good at keeping track of what he was and wasn't allowed to play with, never destroying anything without permission (aside from the contents of open trash cans and unattended tissue boxes). I had work the day after I got him, and he had the run of the house all day while I was gone. To my surprise, all of my stuff was fine when I returned that evening.

Most of all, he became absolutely devoted to me. If we were in the same room, he would ignore everyone else, keeping eyes on me at all times. Sometimes it felt like we could read each other's minds. My dad was convinced that we were communicating in some sort of code language that we weren't sharing with him. I've never been this close with any other dog, and will miss Dexter dearly.

Took the dogs for a hike this morning. First hike since late winter, what with Sven's cruciate injury and then surgery. They were excited.

So happy!

It feels like spring today! The woods are still their sleepy winter browns, but so full of birdsong. We saw a pair of cardinals on our hike (by the time I got my phone out I had lost track of the female).

A beautiful morning for a relaxing hike.
