In Baltimore City, MD: (2) very fearful shepherd mixes found as strays (reportedly did well w/ finder and other dogs) need rescue - BARCS, Baltimore MD
- Rescue Only -
Licorice (left)- 1 year, unaltered female, 60lbs
Cowtail (right)- 1 year, unaltered male, 55lbs
Licorice and Cowtail were brought to the shelter by a Good Samaritan who had found them running at large together. Their finder was kind enough to keep them in their home for three days while hoping to locate an owner, but was unable to keep them any longer than that. While in their care, Licorice and Cowtail were reportedly friendly and able to be easily handled.
Once at the shelter, Licorice and Cowtail became very fearful and attempted to hide underneath of the steering wheel of the finder's car to avoid being brought inside. Both are incredibly unfamiliar and uncomfortable being leashed and walking on a leash, but did eventually calm down with a lot of patience.
Fortunately for the both of them, Licorice and Cowtail find some amount of comfort and confidence when they're with each other. They have also interacted well with other gentle and respectful friends when off-leash in the shelter's play yard, so we think they'd likely do well, and would probably even benefit from, having other dogs in a future home.
Upon examination, our vets found that both Licorice and Cowtail have pretty dirty ears. Licorice allowed cleaning and medicating; however, Cowtail was much too frantic at the time of intake, so a more thorough ear exam is recommended to be done at a later time. Full medical summaries can be provided upon request.
Because they're both so stressed and fearful, Licorice and Cowtail have been started on a combination of behavior meds, trazodone and gabapentin, to help ease the transition into shelter life.
Licorice and Cowtail are not available for adoption through BARCS at this time and can only be placed with an approved partner rescue organization.
Please let us know if your organization can help!
Thank you,
The BARCS Rescue Team

2nd plea for SANDLOT in Baltimore City, MD:
Handsome hunk of a 97b German Shepherd is smart, obedient, and has done well with other dogs - BARCS, Baltimore MD
- Handsome Hunk in Need -
Sandlot- 3 years, altered male, 97lbs
3-year-old Sandlot might be the biggest hunk at the shelter currently!
This large boy is super strong, but only typically pulls when he wants to say "hi" to other dog; otherwise, he's a fairly easy walk. He's a nice fella, obedient and eager to please, especially when treats are involved, and he has a reliable sit and takes treats gently. Like most dogs, Sandlot enjoys being told what a good boy he is and getting lots of praise.
When tested off-leash in the shelter's play yard, Sandlot was somewhat tense/intense when greeting other dogs, but was overall pretty tolerant and enjoyed chasing. The person who found him as a stray also noted that he did well with their resident dog and seemed interested in playing.
Upon examination, Sandlot appeared generally pretty healthy, but did have some diarrhea, so was started on dewormers and probiotics. He was also recently neutered, so is currently on Carprofen for pain management post-op. A full medical summary can be provided upon request.
Unfortunately, Sandlot is quite stressed in his kennel (pacing, barking, and jumping up and down). Our vets and behavior team decided to start him on trazodone and gabapentin to help for the time being that he's still in the shelter, but what Sandlot really needs is to get into a home.
Sandlot is available immediately for rescue pick-up.
Please let us know if your organization can help!

In Baltimore County, MD: Handsome, adventurous, and intelligent Shepherd mix is looking for a home! - BARCS, Baltimore MD
Forrest Prince- 1 year, altered male, 70lbs
One thing we know to be true about this beautiful young boy is that he much prefers enjoying the fresh air outdoors than to be stuck in the shelter! And of course we don't blame him- he is the Forrest Prince after all, and a kennel is not the place to be when the beautiful leaves are changing colors and calling to him. When outside, he is certainly an enthusiastic explorer, as he is just so eager to show you all the places he would love venture to.
Although Forrest Prince is quite strong and still working on his leash manners, he is very smart and does know how to "sit," and will happily show you. Prince has also been very housebroken and is an intelligent guy who is eager to learn new things.
When tested off-leash in the shelter's play yard, Forrest Prince was pretty intolerant of other male dogs and was looser with females. He seems interested in interacting, but is still getting the hang of things overall (and is still learning that mounting is not everyone's cup of tea).
As a large dog in a kennel, it's understandable that Forrest Prince is growing quite stressed in the shelter, so he's been started on a combination of behavior medication (trazodone and gabapentin) to help ease his stress while still in our care. Unfortunately, he is also now being treated for an upper respiratory infection. A full medical summary can be provided upon request.
Forrest Prince is available immediately for rescue pick-up.

In Baltimore County, MD: Baltimore County Animal Services is seeking rescue placement or an adopter for Delphi. Delphi is a 7 year old, 71 pound German Shepherd that was surrendered to us due to her owner’s financial hardship. Delphi is a sweet and smart girl that doesn’t have the best behavior in the kennel, but outside of it, she’s friendly, social, and mellow. Delphi enjoys going for walks and brief spurts of playing with toys. Delphi previously lived with cats for 5 months, doesn’t have any history of living with children, or other dogs, but her previous owner did note she would snarl at other dogs near food. She has not shown any signs of resource guarding here. Delphi is up to date on vaccines, heartworm tested negative, and spayed. If you are interested in pulling Delphi, or have any questions, please let us know!

In Baltimore City, MD: Bouncy, excitable 3-year-old German Shepherd mix is looking for placement - BARCS, Baltimore MD
Maxter- 3 years, unaltered male, 54lbs
3-year-old 'Maxter' is a bouncy, excitable boy! This handsome fella is an easy walk on the leash, although occasionally has his moments of bouncing joy. He doesn't seem to know 'sit' just yet, or maybe he's just too excited to focus. Maxter loves hanging out off-leash in the shelter's play yard, being pet and brushed, and is very sweet.
While being in our care, Maxter has played well with other dogs. Just as he is around people, this fun guy is bouncy but also able to coexist calmly.
Upon examination, our vets noted that Maxter has otitis, dermatitis, fleas (which we've since treated for), and was underweight. He was started on meds for his skin and ears, and has also been getting an additional midday meal to help him gain weight. A full medical summary can be provided upon request.
Maxter is available immediately for rescue pick-up.

In Baltimore City, MD: Handsome, sweet, and dog-friendly 1 y/o German Shepherd seeking placement! - BARCS, Baltimore MD
Churro- 1 year, altered male, 57lbs
Handsome Churro found his way to BARCS after he was abandoned at a local park. Despite this, Churro has not let the circumstances get him down, as he continues to be a happy and curious boy ready to take on the world each day. He's a sweet, affectionate guy who is also very intelligent and eager to please.
When tested off-leash in the shelter's play yard, Churro was bouncy, loose, and playful with other dogs, and even chose to avoid conflict with rude playmates. We have no history of how he might behave with cats.
Churro is already neutered, and while otherwise apparently very healthy, he did come down with an upper respiratory infection this morning, so is currently being treated for antibiotics and will be due for a recheck on 12/29. A full medical summary can be provided upon request.
Churro is available immediately for rescue pick-up.

In Baltimore County, MD: 2 year old Gorgeous GSD Seeking Rescue
Baltimore County Animal Services is seeking rescue placement or an adopter for Jello. A 2 year old, 67 pound German Shepherd. Jello was originally surrendered to us on September 18th due to the owner not being allowed to have him where he was living. Jello is very social and friendly with people and other dogs. Jello was just adopted on the 24th but was returned this morning due to him chasing the cats in the home. Jello’s adopter also tried to crate Jello, but Jello would bark and try escape the crate. So they left him alone, loose in a separate room, at which point Jello did damage the door and doorframe. We believe with Jello having a slow introduction the house and routine with a hard crate instead of a wire crate, an adoption would be successful for him. Jello is currently being treated for CIRDC and should be done treatment on 10/3. If you are interested in pulling Jello, or have any questions, please let us know! Adopters are welcome to visit 12pm-5pm Tuesdays-Sundays.

Baltimore County Animal Services is seeking rescue placement for Delilah, an estimated 4 year old, 94.5 pound German Shepherd. Delilah came to us as a stray so her history is unknown. Delilah will be spayed and heartworm tested prior to leaving our facility. If you are interested in pulling Delilah or have any questions, please let us know!

In Baltimore County, MD: Max Ben is a 4 year old, 70 pound German Shepherd that came to us as a stray at the beginning of August. We are currently seeking an adopter or rescue for Max Ben. Max Ben came in with another dog who has been adopted. Max Ben isn’t overly confident, but likes attention once he warms up (which doesn’t take too long). Max Ben has ignored other dogs while here and is a big sweetheart once he gets past his nervousness. Max Ben is up to date on vaccines, heartworm negative, and neutered.
If you are interested in pulling Max Ben, or have any questions, please let us know!

In Baltimore City, MD: Handsome, smart, and affectionate Shepherd looking for rescue! - BARCS, Baltimore MD
Finn- 1 year, unaltered male, 77lbs
Meet big, beautiful, Finn! This fella was brought in recently as a stray so is still pretty new to the shelter.
Finn can be tricky to leash, as he tries to slip by you, but will give you gentle licks to the hand as he does so. He's a bit stressed and frantic while outside on walks, but is overall very slow and gentle. If you sit beside him, he will lean into you for love and affection, and if you allow him to, he will even climb up on you for a hug. He's a smart boy and knows sit, and has also been non-reactive in passing other dogs on walks.
Upon examination, our vets noted that Finn has a slightly crouched stance and is an abdominal cryptorchid. X-rays of his hips are recommended while under sedation for neuter, and a full medical summary can be provided upon request.
BARCS is OUT of dog space and Finn will be available for rescue pick-up at close of business 8/22.
Please let us know if your organization can help!
