I am so excited. This is a modular synth, in eurorack format, called the isms system. It is a collaboration between two highly innovative companies, Monome and Whimsical Raps. Monome's modules are incredibly deep sequencers and controllers that connect to a piece of hardware called the Grid. The Grid is a compact 8 by 16 grid of buttons that displays the interface of the module it is plugged into. Together these modules can act as the core for your patch structure, creating complex self generative patterns and record emotional instrument performance gestures. Whimsical Raps designed and builds the oscillators, modulation sources, filters and amplifier/utility modules present in the system. All their modules are packed with a stunningly diverse amount of functionality. Reading through the manuals I was shocked at how many different roles each one of their modules could play. Together, they made the isms case, specifically designed with their modules in mind, the case includes integrated ins and outs, an external spring reverb and a built in row of utility modules crucial for getting the most control out of their modules. I can honestly say that learning to play this instrument will keep me busy for a good many years. Time to get started. Thank you so much, Monome and Whimsical Raps. It's beautiful. Supposed to be learning the Mannequins by @WhimsicalRaps range but as usual getting distracted with patching. DU™️ #Repost @rian.blokoono ・・・ Playing my modular synthesiser with @sunhouseinc Sensory Percussion. There is a lot to unpack here, and of course so much more to explore. All of the sounds are coming from the eurorack system, which is being controlled entirely by drumming. Kick is advancing the steps on @makenoisemusic Pressure Points. Each row of PP is going through a sequential switch, turning PP into a 12 step sequencer. This CV is then quantised by @intellijel uScale, before controlling the pitch of @whimsicalraps Mangrove, the bass voice. Snare is advancing steps on René, which has a handful of random gates switched on, and is controlling the pitch of Rings, so I can play semi-random flourishes of notes (/weird melody) with my left hand. The kick and snare sounds themselves are from the Prok modules I recently built. Using velocity controllers in Sensory Percussion, I was able to get 2 slightly different snare sounds from the same pad - soft hits activate a hi pass filter, and modulate the timbre and decay of the Prok module, allowing me to play a backbeat as well as (sort of) ghost notes. This didn’t quite work out how I wanted but I guess that’s the beauty of the limitations that come with the endless possibilities of modular synthesis. Hi hat sound is Erbe-Verb, decay turned up full, with envelopes being sent to the mix knob.
