i feel like no matter how often i read the novel, i still fall back into a default state that feeds off the show. not talking about characterization, vibe, or anything significant. more like the little details, plot points, backstories of side characters, and so on. for example, it hasnt been that long since i last read tyk, but between then and now i went back to thinking mhy is responsible for both cwn and axiang’s death, and that wen kexing takes his revenge on him both as a stand-in for axiang, but also because he lost his little sister because of this man, which isnt true, as i found out just now. i also forgot the atrociously different-to-woh detail about zzs’s sword; something woh handily embroidered a sect heirloom story around, and which i thought qhz might have gotten as a payment or smth from yby: not the case. when will this torment end? cry

Definitely for sure Arthur having magic (in at least some form) is one of my favourite things to write and read, I just wish there was more of it!!!!

Okay okay, so to answer your question, my favourite fic idea for it, man that's so hardddd! There's so many interesting concepts likeee:

--Arthur finding out about his magic at a young age and keeping it a secret.

--Arthur finding out about his magic at a young age, in front of Uther (I've written a fic like this, but I want more)

--A baby Arthur magics some items around him, and either - his nursemaid freaks out and calls the guards in, and they agree that there's no way Uther would believe them so they keep it a secret, hoping that one day the king will see (as they're afraid of magic).

--Or baby Arthur magics some items around him and Uther sees and in his rage, and with the Great Purge still raging on (it lasted a year so Arthur would be a baby baby), he orders the guards to put Arthur in the cells.

--Or baby Arthur magics some items and Gaius sees, and in his panic smuggles Arthur out of Camelot with Nimueh's help (I wrote something like this once but I never finished it)

--On the other hand, child Arthur suddenly finds out about his magic in front of Uther and Gaius, and Uther, in a fit of rage, orders a stand to be built for his execution at dawn.

Gaius smuggles child Arthur out with the help of some guards who renounced their magic during the Purge. During his escape, the Druids step out from the shadows of the forest and offer to take Arthur in. The guards agree and return to Camelot, while the Druids take Arthur over the border to Ealdor :)

Therefore, Merlin and Arthur grow up together, eventually heading to Camelot when Hunith grows concerned for Merlin (like in canon), and Merlin magically dyes Arthur's hair black - as well as the beard Arthur grows to disguise himself. Uther, of course, does not recognise his son. (Im planning to write this one day, but idk if I ever will) There's of course other ideas where Arthur discovers he has magic as an adult like:

--Maybe an AU where Arthur is a seer like Morgana but gets specific Merlin related dreams. He only works out his dreams are real when Merlin has an injury that lines up with his dreams (say like Arthur seeing a scar from Nimueh's fireball, which he had a dream about)

--Arthur and Merlin are cornered in a fight, and Merlin gets shot with a crossbow bolt - and falls. In a blind panic, Arthur shouts, and everyone gets pushed back. In the moment, he knows what has happened, but he ignores it in favour of getting Merlin home - to Gaius. (The dynamic of this AU would change depending on if Arthur is a prince or king here)

--Oh, another idea is like Aredian deciding to go after Arthur, which makes Arthur very confused - this AU would also include like Aredian being able to sense magic, because as much as he was a faker out there, he was right about who had magic sdjhfghjsd

And these are just some of my ideas, Im trying to not get too away from myself here for you! sdhjfgjhsdhg This is already getting to be a long post. But I love these ideas, some of them I've just made up now, that's how much I love this concept. I don't think I could pick a favourite, but if I had to right now, it would probably be a baby Arthur/child Arthur idea. Just getting to play around with a younger Arthur is so interesting. And baby Arthur requires an Outside POV which is fun to play with too!

But to rant about Arthur having magic, nowww, tumblr user gabalicious-g, aaaah. Okay.

Our mans is born of magic okay. The exact same phrasing is used for Merlin. Let the golden boy have magic, it would really fuck him up :P That's why I love playing around with it in fic! Like how would it affect him?

I don't see him going the way of Morgana. I could see him, if he had found out as child, repressing that part of him wholly in fear, and maybe even disgust. If he found out as an adult, I could see him freaking the fuck out - especially if he was still a prince.

It's just okay, right, right. Arthur is made up of magic, that's how I interpret it anyway. I think lately I like imagining Nimueh summoning water into the Cup of Life, in a similar manner as to when Merlin got the water to save Arthur. So, she gives the water to Gaius (who was the one sent to ask), and Ygraine drinks it, and boom, she's pregnant. So I like to think Arthur is basically like all of what Ygraine is (in looks at least :P) and then magic, magic makes up the rest.

Like it's very easy for me to go, well surely there's something he could do. I mean the whole dying to rise again one day is pretty magical enough :P So, I'm like all brrrr for this concept, so much I cannot resist it.

There's so much you can do even if you don't go full Arthur's a sorcerer AU. There's stuff that can more easily fit into canon, there's stuff you could do post revival to mess around with it. It's just there's so much thereeeee.

And of course, there's how this would all impact Merlin. Like what would he think if he found out/suspected Arthur had magic? Just aaaah so much potential to play withhh.

Im always a bit on the fence about getting into new systems bc my players LOVE dnd and like prefer that to everything else even if we do play other systems every once in a while for one/twoshots and since I'm the forever it feels a bit bad to learn a new system and read the entire book and dumb it down with notes for my players but

Oh god. Firstly I'm so sorry but Shadowrun is such a confusing system that your players might immediately hate it and you might too. I got lucky getting a GM who has been playing Shadowrun abt as long as I've been alive but even then there are times we both get confused by the books and what they say. A lot of this is just because the writing of SR is. Well. All over the place. It gets tossed around a lot and ppl write the books without knowing stuff or they change stuff and it doesn't make sense so really. If you do look into it. All I can say is just do what makes sense to you.

As far as NPCS go, it's also difficult to recommend any cuz. Shadowrun NPCS come in two flavors: Your average Capitalist Corporate Some Guy (probably doesn't even have any art/hasn't had any new art in abt 15 years) or the most insane mfer on the planet but theyre one of the MAJOR players in the world. Which those guys are pretty cool. A lot of them are dragons tho. A few dragons do have "canon" human disguises tho. Like Lofwyr, hes cool as fuck.

There's also Harlequin who is fucking deranged but he's an important NPC who's been around a long time

Worst part is that most named NPCs just do not have a lot of appearances because they're SO important in the higher up schemes they mostly exist for lore. And again these two only have these images from the video games that exist. Which those are fun those are a great time and if you don't wanna jump into sourcebooks, Shadowrun Returns is a great starting point to get to know the world and lore. But I love Shadowrun! Very hard to recommend at times! It's a difficult system and the lore is a mess and if you wanna look for someone that's prime kissing material good luck finding info on any existing characters! JHGJLDSG It's great tho please don't let all of that deter you-

i shall dive into your answer tmrw but the funny thing is that when i started 911 i actually just assumed that eddie and buck were a canon couple immediately bc of tumblr lol and so i definitely read into it but the way that maddie was like calling buck out on his boy crush on eddie and then the way eddie kept saying that those girls “weren’t his type”/“im not what they’re looking for” i deadass just assumed he was gay LMFAO but then they brought shannon back and i was so confused and that’s when i looked it up and i was like OH and then i kinda got less invested in them

Ooooh you’re so right…I think it was the hype from s1 and the gap in between the release (plus the movie!! Almost forgot that existed) that really built up s2 especially since the beginning was very gojo centric….speaking of I almost forgot you consume jjk too, are you caught up with the manga? I’m so excited to see her selfish side like I feel like in these settings it’s such a unique way to go about the mc?? I remember watching/reading some series with more historical settings (like my happy marriage which I mean. It’s a romance so I guess I should’ve expected it LOL) but the mc is usually very…submissive…? I get how that fits into the contexts of the time too (eugh misogyny) but it’s refreshing to see more bold characters than your token shoujo protag LOL

Also every time you write Itoshi bros crossed out I giggle LMAO honestly yeah their tag is alive and kicking comparatively too and I do see many similar if not identical tropes and prompts (no hate to any of the writers because I have found some gems in there too! YES otoya is almost like irreverent i think?? he’s not immature but he just truly does not care he’s doing his own thing. whereas karasu is very concerned w what people think of him and yuki has an innate classiness and dignity to him so i think they could pull off the noble vibe well. though quite honestly karasu gives me more knight/samurai (in this au) vibes — still a fighter, but a more honorable one who has a moral code he strictly follows compared to otoya’s willingness to do wtvr

MORALLY GREY CHARACTERS WHO ARE ACTUALLY MORALLY GREY MY BELOVED 💖 oh yeah 100% if i was going a bit more cliche i could’ve had y/n try to seduce him or smth but i tried to avoid that (although eita does make one slight joke of a sexual nature during their convo but he’s just being goofy so i think it’s okay) as i really wanted to set her up as someone who’s not afraid of being brutal/ruthless to get what she wants. and i agree there’s a lot of more subdued fmc in historical aus but honestly it’s an au so why not give my female characters agency??? i’ve def written the more stereotypically “weak” fmc before but i didn’t want to go that route this time given who she’s inspired by. plus a lot of it is rooted in westernization i think — people view the history of other countries through a european lens when a lot of the time that doesn’t apply. for example y/n being a bastard wouldn’t be a huge problem in japanese society as bastards/cheating were actually relatively common back then!! and even accepted…if a lord didn’t have legitimate heirs he would adopt his bastards and that was that 🤷🏻‍♀️ that’s why y/n being “cursed” and the daughter of a maid, as well as reiji being the legitimate heir, is important to her backstory and why she suffers in the way she does, as well as an explanation for some of her later actions. in a european-based story, just being a bastard would be enough of an explanation for all of that, but in something based on sengoku-era japan, there needs to be further context. but also even setting that aside if i can have ninjas in my story (who i am trying to keep more accurate than their general portrayal in fiction but i’m still going to take liberties with) then why not a ruthless selfish fmc who goes to war and takes over the kingdom?? anyways there’s records of empresses in japan, china, and korea alike, so long story short i think that writing y/n like this makes sense and is about as historically accurate as the rest of it, so why not?? plus it makes for a more fun story

HAHAHA the itoshi bros are like the only bllk characters who i see with a tonnn of fics!! the others don’t have quite as many (although kaiser is getting up there i think). i do think that a lot of the stories have similar tropes due to the nature of the characters…they both feel like very “stuck” characters in that you can’t do too much w them or change them a lot — they’re so into soccer that putting them in an au for example would fundamentally change their characters, so you most likely won’t catch me writing more than a one shot or two abt them. whereas as we’ve discussed tabieitaken, kaiser, nagireo, and even hiori all feel like they have characters outside of soccer so it’s easier to put them in other scenarios and play around with how they’d react to them

I LOVEEEE A GOOD SLOWBURN!! even stories where the characters get together quickly in terms of time i try to really show the buildup. i always want the relationships i write about to feel believable, so i need to write every step of them falling in love or else it doesn’t feel accurate to me. that’s actually an issue i had with peregrine — because it started in the future, after that buildup, i felt weird writing nagi being in love w the mc because it didn’t feel “earned” yet.

oh you can never keep me from my research LMAOAO i’ll take any excuse to do it!! even white butterfly had me googling the flora and fauna of japanese fields to ensure i didn’t mention any animals that wouldn’t natively live in y/n and hiori’s field HAHA

Bear with me here, but I am firm in my belief that the tapestries in the Halls of Mandos function like movie screens, showing either important events or important people (often said important people are just going about their daily lives).

So all the dead members of the House of Finwe just sit around a tapestry with imaginary popcorn and watch the world. Some of it is tragic and moving of course, but so much of it is benine (they spend the majority of the second age trying to figure out who Gil-galads parents are).

But once things start happening in the third age (in which our movie-watchers have previously split their time alternatively encouraging Galadriel to deck Saruman in the face, and getting weirdly invested in Shire politics) they quickly develop a favourite hero. Said hero is Eowyn. She reminds them all of Aredhel, and by the time she joins the army they’re all in mass support of everything she does.

What I’m saying is that once Eowyn actually fights the Witch-King, she has the entire House of Finwe cheering her name, and when she wins they all riot so hard Namo kicks them out of the Halls. Naturally both Maedhros and Anaire (once someone tells her about it) lament the fact that they couldn’t marry Eowyn instead of their current husbands, and the rest of the family vehemently insist that Arwen chose the wrong mortal.

HCanon I absolutely ADORE THIS. However, if it doesn’t culminate in Gandalf being forced to go back to ME to “go get our girl” under pain of death until Eowyn is like “no I’m good” at which point Olorin has to haul ass *back* to Valinor, while a very upset Faramir is protesting that he’d like to see the undying lands, pretty please with a cherry on top. (I love Faramir very much and im sorry)

Also, just to be clear: they know Saruman is bad news pretty early and are angrily yeeting popcorn, almonds, and the occasional knife whenever he shows up on screen. At first Namo thinks its just them being Overly Aggressive, and honestly, the Feanorians aren’t quite sure why they hate him so much either. But at some point Saruman does turn evil and the valar do concede that when it comes to being oddly in tune with exactly who is “a traitorous piece of shit” the shiny murder family (minus Celebrimbor who is a kind and innocent soul) takes the cake.

Further bonus: they demand occasional cuts to Maglor, which is then spliced in comedically, in a “Meanwhile Maglor” segment which could well be the same clip over and over. *insert that meme where the child wipes away a movie screen characters tear*

When Frodo first shows up, he is almost crushed by the whole family demanding to meet the mayor. Frodo is really confused who “the mayor” is and if he is also “the potato man” until he finally exclaims “Why that’s SAM!” He is swiftly informed that no one ever calls him that, jeeze, but yes that’s “Sam.” Where is “Sam.”

They also go after Galadriel for giving Sam that tree and magic dirt because she really upset the balance of power there, but did she even consider that?? NOOOOO. She didnt.

There were all those rumors of Sam’s mayor ship being blessed. Was she aware of that?? Of the ridiculousness she’d brought into what was normally Good Ordered Politics!!! Galadriel’s like “fuck yeah I did think about that actually, and can you Really say Sam doesn’t deserve a little bit of awe from the people there”

The Feanorians realize that, being Galadriel, Galadriel is RIGHT. And since they have no sense of a middle ground, they get in contact with their sleeper agent Maglor (who’s obviously a sleeper agent and very much in contact with them, shut up). Who will now fulfill my life’s ambition of forming a cult as a (in)famous bard. The cult of Samwise the potato man. Sam would like to know what the Fuck is going on and he shows up to Valinor with Questions. (please ignore this paragraph, I just want a cult)

okay. okay. i don’t even know where to start so i’ll get the ones im not too invested in out of the way. crypto and caustic HATE EACHOTHER. they are both going under fake identities and they both know it. but ALSO. crypto and caustic are stepbrothers. caustic is the biological son of mystik, an old woman who adopted crypto when he was younger. however crypto and caustic never met (i don’t think) when they were young so they didn’t actually Know this for a very long time until SOMEONEEE (me. pathfinder) literally just Guessed that since their mothers went by similar names that they were the same person. and then i just said bye and FUCKING LEFTTTTT. it was really funny they were both like. …………… see below:

ok next is uhh bloodhound and fuse. fuse joined the games and after a hard journey for the two of them bloodhound became fond of him. he comforted them throughout their journey trying to find themself and blaming themself for their home’s loss and destruction. the voice actors and like half the community ship them really hard so that’s cute i guess. idk if i’d call that canon though but they definitely are SUPER cute when they talk to one another

fuse and maggie OH BOY. OH BOY they were like Besties since they were little little kids. pretty much siblings. almost their WHOLE story is explained with this sfto though if you wanna watch that instead of me explaining. but yeah they hate each other now because fuse Left her and the already diminishing planet of Salvo to fend for themselves, basically selling them off to the syndicate. so yeah fuse is kind of a dick so maggie is furious with him (rightfully)

awwww rampart and mirage awww. they’re so cute. what started off as a bickering friendship between the two blossomed into soemthing mirage could Only define as a sibling bond, reminding him of his brothers (which he had lost). they’re siblings they’re found family and they’re so funny together their relationship makes me cry a little bit in a funny way and a sad way i love them. see below:

wattson and caustic ohhh boy. this one’s confusing. father-daughter like bond at first, caustic really admired her work in the science field and she appreciated his admiration. then that bond formed but caustic tried some shady shit in broken ghost because wattson started becoming besties with crypto and wattson REALLY didn’t like that so they like… weren’t friends anymore? and he did some more shady shit and she like electrocuted him and i guess that worked because now he’s like a sad puppy when he talks to her. so yeah idk what happened HAHAH.

last but not least me (pathfinder) and ash. yayyyy. i don’t liek talking about this one because i don’t like the way i was written here but i’ll give you the gist. i foudn her in the dumpster after she was put together and like. saved her i guess because she got rebuilt after. and then she moved in with me and i had a little girlcrush on her for a while (it was one of those “you’re a girl and you’re my friend, so you’re my girlfriend!” things) but she wasn’t interested (the way they wrote me was a little creepy :((( ) and she left. but she joined the games a couple seasons later and i apparently still haven’t let it go because i still. yeah. but yeah after she left i was depressed for like an entire season until my best friend mirage cheered me up ^_^ yay

supernatural - yuuji and yuuta!! it would be their way of bonding :) maki would join them sometimes at random points so every time yuuji very excitedly briefs her about what happened in the episodes she missed. one time she joins them as they are watching the legendary episode where destiel becomes canon. this would be right after that scene and while usually both of them look pretty interested in what they're watching this time their faces are just. completely blank. yuuji and yuuta slowly look at each other, yuuji starts cracking up and soon enough theyre both laughing their asses off. maki is intrigued by what could possibly be this funny so they replay the scene for her, still trying to contain their laughter. after she watches it she is EXTREMELY CONFUSED??? shes like wait what? they're in love? since when what did i miss?? he went to hell? WHAT?? this just sends yuuji n yuuta into hysterics. they can't really explain why they find it so funny but they end up having a great time. it becomes sort of an inside joke between them and maki and she still acts irritated every time bc she's trying to make sense of it which always make the other two laugh :)

riverdale - (omg this is about that weirdo in a hat) hmm i think mai. deep down she understands this isn't peak cinema but finds a way to enjoy it nonetheless. and i mean enjoy as something to turn on when you're tired of everything and just wanna watch something strange enough that it is detached from reality

glee - (HOLY SHIT I JUST LOOKED IT UP AND?? SKFSFKQSK IT FUCKING LISTS TEXTING WHILE DRIVING AND GAY MARRIAGE AS SOCIAL ISSUES ON THE WIKI IM CRYING. oh i just looked up more stuff. holy shit who let this show be on tv) you know what. mahito. i refuse to elaborate more than this show is just perfect for him.

dance moms - nanami. i can't really explain it but i think he would watch it at first just to judge the adults in it but slowly gets really invested

keeping up with the kardashians - momo. imo she would unironically enjoy the drama between them and find it funny

stranger things - megumi. would watch until s4 and then would quit it bc from what i've heard most of the queer characters and characters of color get treated horribly. also i think it would get under his skin quite a bit because he just keeps thinking of himself and yuuji and it keeps reminding him how they will never get a happy ending. yuuji notices that he's upset but megumi never answers honestly when asked about it bc he doesn't wanna remind yuuji about it and feels selfish for wishing it didn't have to be like this :(

okay so this was so long ago but im thinking about it again, me and my partner @skelimes were thinking about an eris lives au/general postcanon for w359. eris living would completely change the canon ie maxwell probably would have lived

start of the au: eris never died at the end of change of mind. this ends up changing the entire plot basically

before lovelace died, she deactivates rhea with the intention of reactivating her either back on earth or if she ended up at the station again. SI5 show up and lovelace gets maxwell’s help in waking her back up, only for maxwell to find two personality matrixes in sleep mode. lovelace is confused as hell until they both get woken up, only to realize who the second voice is. the self destruct didn’t go off exactly as planned, and as a virus eris managed to hook herself onto whatever was left of rhea.

both of these new personality matrixes are kind of tacked on to hera, and she starts performing even more poorly than before. maxwell and hera arc goes on mostly like it did in the show, only with the added conflict of eris being there and very very bored.

eris is just sort of... around. she doesn’t actually have access to any of the commands and things on the ship, so she just hangs around fucking with people and generally being annoying. lovelace is the only person here she had any real connection to, and she’s too busy to say much to eris beyond being glad she ended up living. eris is struggling a lot with the fact that she has no real purpose anymore

meanwhile maxwell takes an interest to eris. she hasn’t ever encountered an ai virus, so she’s somewhat invested in finding out what’s up with her

i think that eris has the kind of meanness that would be able to draw out the good in maxwell. hera has her moments and she isn’t a pushover by any means, but at her heart, she’s undeniably good. eris and maxwell are more complicated than that, they’ve both been shaped by their environments to be morally grey leaning bad, and are maybe even convinced they were just born bad, that they can’t possibly change.

maxwell starts talking to eris and consoling her like she does with hera. eris goes on about how she can't fulfill her purpose anymore, maxwell says she's her own person and isn't defined by that one purpose. eris points out that maxwell is essentially the same, just having been given that one single purpose by Goddard/Kepler instead of being coded that way. how she's actually starting to become friends with hera, but she’s programmed to betray and take her over because of this Objective and Purpose bullshit

they’re both silent for a while, and both rethink their roles on the ships. during the standoff, maxwell softens and indicates a little more sympathy to minkowski, and minkowski doesn’t shoot.

i can’t decide if jacobi still gets redeemed if maxwell does? i had said no but maybe actually yes. jacobis whole thing was how loyal he was to maxwell and her death is what makes him switch sides, but i feel like kepler would be able to manipulate him into staying on his side. i think he maybe does get his redemption but not until way later, probably also finale like kepler. dunno.

I’m in love with you. The reboot is like an AU of the og trilogy. The biggest difference from the two series is that the reboot doesn’t have Roach and (so far) they’re all alive still. Yes they’re killed at the end of the og trilogy and there’s a very solid chance they’ll be killed in the reboot too. They r not canon gay but both their actors are ✨allies✨ and the bedroom voices is bc they’re whispering through the radio bc they can’t make much noise cuz they’re bein stealthy. The mask is bc of Ghost’s trauma it’s a long story basically his brother tormented him with a skull mask as kids and then when he was tortured while in the army he went through that whole “Simon Riley is dead. I am Ghost” phase thing and now he wears the mask like everywhere

genuinely so confused with people who hate show!darklng. show!darkling is as much of a part of oppressed minority as book!darkling is but with even more 'validation' for his purpose, and i see people still hate show!him saying "oh but he is very bad in book" but then i see them rooting for book m*l LIKE HOWWW [i do kinda understand with those who dislike book!darkling but im still as baffled when when they root for book m*l]

ah, the good old darkling vs mal debate, lol.

in all honesty, i think whether someone prefers mal or the darkling when they watch/read SaB really comes down to how different fans like to engage with media.

i really enjoy politics, moral ambiguity, and fiction as a tool to examine real world oppression. as a result (and incredibly predictably to every single person who knows me) my favorite character is the darkling, because his character is a great lense to examine those different aspects of the series from. but, let's be honest here - both the books and the show only engage in politics, gray morality, and discrimination and oppression against minorities in like... the most surface-level way possible. if you're not already prone to getting over-invested in those fictional aspects, there's very little incentive to do so - because both the books and the show only set the darkling up as a focal point to examine those concepts in book 1, when alina thinks he could possibly be a good person. as soon as the darkling is revealed to be an eViL mAnIpUlAtOr, quite literally all of the nuance is stripped from his character, and we no longer engage with any valid points he may or may not have.

which means, if you're not super interested in socio-political worldbuilding, or you don't really want to examine war from a philosophical or moral standpoint, the books and show won't make you, and so it's nice and easy to just view the darkling as the amoral antagonist who needs to be taken down. i honestly don't blame fans for not liking him in the books, because the books don't... really want you to. and the show does pretty much the same thing. the show stops sympathizing with the darkling the second baghra lets the truth drop, and so every single thing he was previously shown to care about is now framed as the manipulation of an evil, calculating villain. so if a fan looks at the darkling, sees all the evil shit he does, and doesn't want to look past all of that, in order to critically examine his character, and the biased way he's viewed... i mean. yeah. then they wouldn't be a fan of his. they're more than justified in that, in my opinion. "this character is interesting, you just have to look past all the nonsensical extremist, stupid bullshit he does that harms everyone around him" isn't going to be a universal opinion, and i don't blame them for not wanting to go out of their way to sympathize with an uncompromising, murderous bastard who doesn't really respect anyone else's opinions other than his own (which, i think, is true even of show!darkling, although he feels worse about the fact that he's screwing people over. like he might cry about it, but he's still going to go forward with his plan, regardless of who objects). there's a reason darklina fans spend so much time writing about what they think would have been a more satisfying or interesting character arc for the darkling to go through - because canon absolutely doesn't do him any favors. like at all.

and on the other side, there's mal. i actually like both show and book mal, even though i don't think book mal was always handled incredibly well. i think he's a fairly sympathetic character with phenomenally bad coping mechanisms, and that the story spends essentially no time actually exploring his negative character traits in a meaningful way, which means, again, that we're given a character who the audience is tasked with doing most of the legwork for, if they want to like him. just like darkling fans very rarely excuse every single thing he's ever done, i don't actually see mal fans defend all the shit he pulls - beyond when both sides are baiting each other, in which case everyone seems to say the most black and white shit i've ever heard. but that's just kind of how online discourse works, so i won't judge people based off that, lol.

i think most fans of book mal seem to take his character, examine his negative traits and where they stem from, pick how they, personally, would like to see those issues addressed, and then put in the work to give him and alina the breathing room to do go through that character growth together.

so, by and large, i think fans of book mal and show mal just have different concepts that they find interesting or satisfying to explore in the media that they like. i obviously can't speak for others, but generally with mal and alina, i do think it's an interesting coming of age story, and has a smaller-scale, trauma-focused approach to the over-arching, wide-scale moral dilemmas that i focus on when i think about the darkling and alina. they're two flawed characters, thrust into a horrible situation, and they're desperately trying to get through it together, while fighting for the happy, peaceful lives that no one else has ever cared about them achieving.

so, yeah. in the end, i think it's really about what a fan wants from the media they consume. there's not really a wrong answer, in my opinion. it's only when people start judging each other over their fictional preferences that things start getting rocky, which is something that both darkling/alina shippers and mal/alina shippers could probably be better about, as needlessly antagonistic posts are prominent in both ship tags.

I haven’t written in a while so hearing that you like it means a lot 🥺🥺 also, don’t mind me going on a little tangent-

The part where you said you didn’t expect E!Jesse to end up like that means extra to me (in a good way) That’s what I’m after!

The thing about E!Jesse is that that’s the only thing that changes about the canon. He’s the only thing that changes (apart from the scene in the beginning where Soren takes the Dragon’s Breath*) in the au. Theres no over complicated storyline where there was an awful experiment that went wrong or he was simply born like that. No, it was just a simple mistake that was forced to be made. Just one simple action in the present** that caused a domino of effect.

As someone who wrote a story that was just piled up with way too complicated backstories that had to be read thoroughly in order to properly understand the plot, like paragraphs after paragraphs to fully get the story down, writing an au like this was relieving. Yes, some of the e!jesse au does have a bit of a mystery like about the bottle but all of that is literally one click away! The Dragon’s Breath isn’t something I made up, it’s in Minecraft itself! You can read about it in the Wiki, something that I can finally link without pouring my brains over.

on the contrary, I absolutely ADORE your storymode au. Just simply INCREDIBLE. Im not saying this just because you complimented my au but because it really did feel like it scratched an itch that I felt like needed to happen.

I’ve seen aus before where Jesse was all-knowing and was aware that they were in a game, even going as far as to control the game but they didn’t feel right. They always felt too godly like Jesse was the love child of Herobrine and some other overpowered characters*** or Jesse was some interdimensional being with a mood ring for an eye (whole colors changing due to emotions) and 2836 different forms but you? Your shit just hooked me in the moment you included the choices and other characters like Lukas being aware. Just a wonderful subtle line of Jesse having control but that control doesn’t always translates to power. It doesn’t make him a higher being because of it as it always sets him back a little. Fabulous work! ❤️❤️✨❤️

* - you can read more about it on my fic explaining the au, Oblivion [basic tldr: Soren has bottle of the dragon’s essence. Jesse gets injured badly. Jesse is given the bottle bc everyone thinks that it’s a healing thingy potion. oh no. Consequences.]

** - I wanted to specify in the present because there are other similar things where yeah it’s one mistake but it took place decades before the current story and most times, stories spends too long trying to allude to what happened in the past that when the reader finally gets to the big reveal, they’re confused because they’re still thinking that they’re following another breadcrumb.

*** - I’m not saying it’s bad to include someone like Herobrine as Jesse or any other character’s parents, or relative. I think that it can be a great storyline as long as you use it well. I just happen to be an unfortunate sucko who accidentally fell into a rabbit hole of shitty WattPad aus where Herobrine “returns”, causes a bunch of evil shit and when Jesse faces Herobrine off, apparently it turns into a Star Wars movie and Herobrine reveals himself to be Jesse’s father and it’s just done so many times and so suddenly. There isn’t any build up to it and just ughhhhh

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. It’s not bad if you don’t let it be bad. Many of those things are just personal opinions and even then, if you write it and twist it in the right way, I’m certain it’ll turn out amazing. well, technically if we look at in this way. Y/N is partly a curse when she popped out of her mommas tummy its why her twin died, and why her cousins and uncles seem sick in the head because theyre all curses who flourish in negative energy (in jjk negative energy creates curses and makes them only stronger, if ur also sorrounded by a curses it also affects ur mental wellbeign!) and we all know from canon that in order to be able to house a vengeful/cursed spirit, you have to have at least have some curse blood bcos if u dont you'd die (like yuuji! *spoilers*) the only way to do that is if you're like kenjaku or your partly a curse to begin with since full curses do not have reproductive parts.

Y/N does not have the technique at birth (shes only born as a curse, like ex.yuuji, he technically wasnt born with sukuna yet but hes a curse because pseudo!geto is his hot momma). She gets the minazuki when shes killed the previous vessel/host because unlike Yuuji who eats fingers, Y/N has to kill the previous vessel/host.

if someone were to kill y/n now, she'd end up being a full curse but that would put og!minazuki at a disadvantage because she wants human hosts.

What og!minazuki basically did, she used and breeded her own blood to be able to transfer from one body to another so she could live longer.

Y/N is just a chess piece for og!minazuki :)

anyways im assuming youre talking about my general lore for them in the canon timeline, so ill talk about that under the cut

i think they first met some time in the late 80s while pickles was still with snb. they met after a show specifically. magnus introduced himself as a fan, and that was true! but (quick tangent for some general mag thoughts) it brings up something that ive always thought about when i look at mag. magnus definitely gives off the vibe of being the guy who was always just Around in the music scene, especially in the rock and metal scene of this era. like, hes a mysterious dude but he has connections. he will play with random bands sometimes. he knows so many fucking people in this industry (not saying hes friends with all of them though); what im trying to say is. Everyone Has A Magnus Hammersmith Story. hes the type of guy that gets talked about in podcasts decades down the line. ok all that to say he was able to get backstage because he just Knows People. and he introduces himself as a fan blah blah pickles and magnus drink and do some drugs and honestly i wouldnt be surprised if they at the very least made out with each other the first night they met.

so pickles is like, pretty into him right off the bat. magnus was too, but i think on his end INITIALLY he was more just interested in hooking up but they exchange info and keep in touch and all that. so. this is RIGHT before snb implodes. and theyre still meeting up fairly regularly and becoming closer and doing a lot of drugs and drinking a bunch. typical rockstar stuff.

but pickles had been on a steady downward spiral at this point (he was already like this before he met magnus), and in one night snb is no more. having burned all those bridges in his band (for now), pickles turns to his only friend left: magnus. and i think its at this point, when pickles comes to him, wrecked by the dissolution of his band, that magnus kinda starts to realize he might actually feel something for him too? seeing him like this, seeing pickles from fucking snakes n barrels, so raw and real and not at all like the fiery redhead he met that night after their show...it just feels different somehow. like yeah he was attracted to pickles from snakes n barrels, but he realized he had grown to care about pickles from tomahawk wisconsin. he liked that one better, there was no bullshit. no hiding beneath layers of glam makeup and hairspray.

so its the two of them against the world. its the early 90s at this point. on a whim, pickles decides they should leave LA and just drive. wherever. just away from the city because LA fucking sucks. he takes all his money and he and magnus get in his car and just start driving. they end up in florida eventually, because its the other side of the country. or something. they get an apartment, and for a couple of months they live together and its. kinda nice. its different, for sure. but not bad. magnus and pickles both always kinda skirted around the topic of their relationship. they never called the other their boyfriend. but i feel strongly that they did tell each other that they loved the other, once. and they meant it.

so heres where things get tricky for me. how did dethklok form? what was the order? who met who first? i dont know!! i wish i knew! its something i have a million scenarios for and i wish we got a canon order of the members joining at the very least so i can model my headcanons around it haha

with that in mind though, i do think magnus and pickles were a bit of a package deal. like, whoever joined first was able to get the other in. so. yeah. they joined dethklok some time in the early to mid 90s now.

they have a pretty decent few years. theyre still.......something....even in their new band. like they arent open about it and hook up when the other guys arent around and all that.

its around this time though that i think magnus is really starting to go through it. combination of feeling frustrated because of the bands status at this point, general untreated mental health, etc. anyways i think the stabbing incident occurred some time in the mid 90s, probably like '95 or '96 or something. so.....he gets kicked out. obviously. and those are the terms they end on for awhile.........

but uh. you see. pickles never completely cut ties with the dude because. well. what do you do when this happens to someone you care so deeply about. and i think probably a month or so later, magnus actually contacts him for the first time since the stabbing incident. and maybe i have a comic script and thumbnails about this encounter what about it. magnus tells him he wants to see him, so pickles slips out that night to meet up at an old bar they used to go to a lot. may or may not be the depths of humanity uhhh anyway. theyre talking for awhile but it just kinda devolves into honestly more one-sided arguing on pickles end. hes frustrated and sad and confused because fuck! magnus! why would you do that? why, when the bands just starting to take off? it becomes this whole like. you arent the same guy i knew. and in that moment it quietly hits them both that like. we arent who we were, and we dont know what to do about that. magnus asks if pickles would want to join him and leave the band, and pickles tells him to go fuck himself. and thats the last thing he ever said to him.

and thats where the magpickles lore/relationship timeline ends. i realize it really did kinda turn into a timeline but also i did write a timeline during a slow day at work once like two months ago but. anyways. this is basically that.

but uh. yes. i love them. they make me sad but in a good way yknow. its like. its one of those situations where i feel like under different circumstances, they probably couldve made it work in their own weird way. they have such a specific dynamic, whether in their background together in the canon timeline or just me fucking around with AUs and being like hmm what if i actually gave them a scenario where they could have the time to develop AS an actual couple. im rambling but i just love these two so much. this is so long.

i feel strongly they wouldnt get back together in any sort of canon capacity, but i do think they still have feelings for each other in that way you do when you remember people you loved in the past. old friendships that dissolved with no resolution. the person you still have things you want to tell them, even though you know you will never get the chance.
