Hi! I wanted to tell you that I just finished part 1 and 2 of "a stranger in time dancing in flames, whispering to the stars" and I enjoyed it so, so much. The way you write the characters is amazing, and I love the way you developed them! Naruto being more mature, smarter and quick-witted thanks to finally getting a proper education and a happy childhood is a lovely way to tackle the problems he had both in the shinobi academy and life in general, and Sasuke getting to be with his clan and study the techniques they've had for centuries while training with his family and friends and turning out to be a stronger and kinder version than the one that was filled with nothing but hatred and anger is a nice change of pace from the canon's "you're weak because you lack hatred", and I love it! The characters get so much development and go through moments that are so, so rough and painful in ways that tear them apart- yet it's never the pain that makes them stronger, but the unconditional support and love that others give to them, poor Sakura is going through so much and then people think to come to her thinking that she can somehow help them with problems that kid has no way to know how to help them with (Shin ik you're in a lot of pain and I'm so sorry but Sakura is NOT the best person to help with love problems, all she got from "love" was a literal hole in her chest). It's really funny how this Sasuke DOES like her but she's completely done with him bc of the other timeline that she never even notices the signs that, when she sees on people looking at others that are not her, she immediately recognizes, which now that I think about it may also come from Sakura thinking that no one would love her the way she is now, not even in a conscious way bc of thinking that she doesn't deserve it or anything, but simply putting herself out of the possibility of ever dating anyone unconsciously because she couldn't even imagine herself being in one because of the weight the world puts on her shoulders without knowing about it (and I'm so glad she has people to talk about it, because after all she IS human and has her own limits on her mental health, and those chapters after Shisui had died that had warnings about either death or self-harm had me worrying about her so much) your fanfic has been wonderful to read, and I wanted to thank you for making something so beautifully written
Hello, and terribly sorry for the late reply.
First of all thank you so much for your kind words! I’m really glad that you’re enjoying the series and the way I’ve portrayed the characters in their new/altered circumstances 💕
Naruto, even in canon, exhibited a level of emotional strength and such kindness that honestly amazed me considering the way everyone had been treating him. In my fic that existed as well in his first years of life, but now, him being part of a loving family and having close friends way earlier only works to amplify those traits, as well as mature him in different ways than in canon. He has people to lean on, so he can be vulnerable as well, but in the same vein, having people he cares about makes him want to be stronger in order to keep them safe.
The same goes for Sasuke. And since his family was never taken away from him, he’s allowed to be the kind, considerate, loyal son, brother and friend he couldn’t be in canon. I’m basing their personalities on what we know and have seen about them. Canon Sasuke as a child was downright cute, happy, kind and a bit obsessed with his brother
You are quite right about Sakura’s feelings. On one hand she’s not even considering romantic love and dating because she has the greatest mission ever resting on her shoulders, but yes, she is also feeling… not unworthy of love per se but close to that. Her whole existence in this timeline is followed by secrets and deception. Even if it’s not to hurt others, the fact remains: no one but a very select few actually know her and love her for all she is. Part of her is scared for how the people she cares about would treat her if they ever found out that she’s been lying to them their whole lives. And honestly, her friends are still in a way the ghosts of theirselves she knew in another life.
Thank you so much for reading “a stranger in time” and I hope you’ll enjoy the rest of what’s to come! Until next time 💖

I don’t rlly write bnha fic anymore so I doubt I’ll write this like I know some ppl have done spin-offs - but I like to sometimes think about Sasuke as Eri. Especially him murdering the fuck out of Overhaul and taking off and when subordinates are talked to and police find out it was this CHILD,,, who ALSO weirdly has white hair and two mutated eyes,,, and coincidentally was born around the time Hitoshi was taken in,,, I feel like an utter field day would be had. Fun to think about.
OOOH man that's an interesting idea!! This would be such fuel on the fire of Aizawa's child soldier theory and also might bring up some questions on whether there's any significance to their similar appearance. It'd be pretty easy to prove that genetically they're not related, but what a weird coincidence that two children would appear within the span of just a few years sharing similar fighting techniques, abnormal personalities AND physical characteristics (especially that eye). Like... is there a quirk at the source of all this? Is someone implanting eyes in children or mutating them in some way? And what about that time frame - Eri/Sasuke would have been an infant right about the time Katoshi "disappeared" (aka was taken in by heroes and presumably severed contact with whoever's at the source of this), so is Eri/Sasuke a replacement? And what does that mean for Katoshi if he's rediscovered? Love all the plot bunnies and possibilities this brings up lmao this is so fun
#asks#got the brain spinning#ooh and i wonder what katoshi would think of this when he finds out#he'd obv recognize the sharingan#i imagine sasuke would be the first to identify kakashi#given the single sharingan#while katoshi would be wondering which uchiha he's looking at#which part of the timeline would sasuke come from i wonder#his personality changes pretty drastically over the course of the series#okay gonna shut up but anyway i love this idea lmao

💕Can I request all the senjus,orochimaru,shisui and itachi with a s/o who managed to make themselves immortal with out consequences and they did it without experimenting but they can make other people immortal but people keep trying to kidnap them for it,also they don’t age anymore?💕
This is what pretty much Orochimaru’s dream is.
Tw: Yandere themes, unhealthy mindset, unhealthy relationship, possessiveness, obsessiveness, delusions, kidnapping, manipulation, clinginess
Immortal s/o
Hashirama Senju
🌳He is quite the more supporting and encouraging person. But in this situation even he finds himself a bit unsure how to feel. Your jutsu is quite amazing and something marvelous, but Hashirama is someone who wants to spend his whole life with his darling and die later on when both of them are grey and old together, that is his dream. But with you who stopped aging long ago and will never die, this is something impossible. The clan has definitely a huge interest in you, even though they are aware that your ability will end up being terrifying if it goes into the wrong hands which is why the Leaf guards you very observingly, not wanting to risk that a rival village gets their hands on you. If their strongest shinobi would be made immortal, that would end in a catastrophe. Hashirama himself makes sure that even in his own village no one plans on abusing your powers.
🌳I do not think that Hashirama would force you to either make him immortal nor to somehow tell you that you should try to stop your powers and start aging again. Not like he won't try to convince you to eventually consider finding a way to stop being immortal and instead settle down and live with him. Given the fact that are immortal, you might lived longer than he did and for that have knowledge he and his clan do not possess which is why you're treated from the Senju and the whole village really respectfully, if they need advice they will go and ask you. Hashirama can also only do this much and so he grows more clingy since he knows that he will die whilst you will live. And so he wants to be able to have a place in your heart for all the time to come and alongside with his brother and future generations, he trusts you to protect the Leaf Village once he dies. Even if his darling is immortal, he still wants to marry them since he is traditional.
Tobirama Senju
🌊Despite him being the harsher and much more intimidating and blackmailing guy from all the Senju, he has a rather simple dream as well. He wants to marry his darling and live with them together and one day die. And his dream is messed up with all of this as well and he is quite irritated by the knowledge that you made yourself immortal. On the one hand Tobirama is eager to invent new jutsu himself so from that perspective this is beyond fascinating, a wish many people before him had and tried to work on. But in a way this is honestly way too mocking for him as well because even if his darling might have to endure harsher lessons with him, they might honestly have the relieving thought that he will die one day anyways and then they're free. It is angering because it is true and depending on how old they are, they might nag him because of his behavior and he won't be able to say much against it since he knows they have more experience than him in life.
🌊This might be an advantage you have against him next to the whole being immortal thing. He will start being more respectful once he finds out how old you really are. He literally can not help it and that is why he sometimes, under the risk of his pride, asks you for some advice. He doesn't really want to be immortal either, even though he is more curious about it than his brother is. But what he has to do is always guaranteeing that you are under high protection because he know what terrible things your powers can do when being wrongly used. He might actually try to create a jutsu similar to yours because in a way you have been inspiring him. He also will end up marrying his darling. For starters he is a pretty traditional guy so marriage has a high meaning for him as well. Additionally he is not willing to let you that easily get away with your long life, he is possessive. He just kind of wants to set a mark on you for as long as you're part of the Leaf.
Orochimaru
🐍You have literally achieved what he has been trying to complete his whole life time without even having to experiment on anything and it is thrilling for him. No wonder he is after you as soon as he has heard the rumors, being in his way fervent about it and his obsession starts before he has even met you in person. And oh, he will hunt his darling down, no matter where he has to go and who he has to kill. He wants that jutsu and that talent who created it and no one will stop him. Not going to lie, at the beginning he is a bit salty, mostly because he feels like he has been beaten since you didn't even have to use anyone, you just had pure skill. But whilst he might have lost this, he still can owe the person who had the skills and intelligence and since he will totally force you to teach him that power and make him immortal as well, you might be stuck with him forever if you do so. And the bad part here is that if you don't, he will have no problems torturing you or using you as his next vessel.
🐍You're immortal, so it's not like you will die and he takes advantage of that if you refuse to lend him a hand. If you do help him, he will show his gratitude in a rather odd way, but it's better than his sadstic side. He simply keeps you, that much has to be said already. He can't effort to lose a talent like you, the experience not even to mention. His darling becomes his very special treasure who helped him earning immortality and in return he offers them a place to stay and protection. He knows that everyone wants to have that sort of abilities and he gets rid of all of them all to gladly, he won't let anyone dare to take his special underling away from him. He just always has you tagging along with him. Sasuke gets kind of interested as well since you are indeed powerful and you might as well get close to him since he is together with Kabuto and Orochimaru the only person you will see for a long time. Depending on how long you are already alive, Orochimaru also wants to know pretty much all jutsu and other knowledge you might have.
Tsunade Senju
🐌She looks quite young for her age which comes from the fact that she uses a jutsu that makes her appear young, but she is just like everyone else. She ages and is bound to die one day. And Tsunade handles this maybe a bit worse than some others do. You gotta understand, she just thought that she finally found the one person she can manage to live together with the rest of her life only to discover that they will continue living forever. And to know that she might be only one of many to come and that she might be forgotten one day is truly not very pretty, it makes her a bit more desperate. At first she was probably scared that you used to do the same things Orochimaru did to reach your goal so she was definitely more at ease when hearing that you succeeded without having to go with such drastic methods. For that reason she refuses to let her old teammate find out about you, knowing that he will be after you if he hears that you're in the Leaf which would only give him more reasons to attack.
🐌Tsuna might find herself tempted by the thought to be made immortal from you and live for all eternity together with you, simply because she is possessive as well and wants to be finally happy with the person she loves after all her beloved people dying on her. She's not completely sure, she knows that being immortal can be as much of a curse as it can be a blessing. The the council from Konoha is quite possessive as well, knowing how valuable you are and so they might want to use your powers for more selfish reasons from time to time. This leads to arguments between Tsunade and them because she is often against such decisions, seeing that they plan on making use of you. But one thing they do agree on is keeping you save from all other forces who want you in their grip. Funnily you might be a part of the eldest yourself if you lived long enough which gives Tsunade an advantage since you are on her side and not that narrow-viewed like the other eldest are.
Shisui Uchiha
🍂At this point in his timeline his darling might as well be already part of the village or at the very least known everywhere in the hidden villages for their special jutsu which is why everyone is on some sort of hunt for them. Shisui himself honestly probably never really saw himself falling for someone who constantly dominates the spotlight like you do, maybe also because he thought, despite the fact that you look young, the age difference would make him view you more as a admirable sensei because being able to make yourself and others immortal without having to do experiments on humans needs skill and wisdom. Shisui also just knows that even if you like him as well, this is a completely impossible love since not only might the superiors forbid it, but he does not desire to be made immortal. He already knows that everyone dies sooner or later and given his job being ready to die is a must since he is constantly exposed to danger.
🍂It would only break your heart in the end which is why he kind of feels like it might be best if he stays silent about his feelings at first. He just focuses on protecting you from potential enemies who plan on kidnapping you and tries to be someone who can leighten your mood up a bit since he sympathizes that life for you must be quite tricky. If he does confesses to you because he feels like you really like him as well or you tell him you like him first, he might hesitate and voice his doubts, but can be more easily manipulated since he loves you. Shisui kind of knows that he might not be the last since he doesn't want to be made immortal and you might find after his death a new person you love. And he accepts that, he doesn't want his darling to be alone only because they can't die. But he can make sure that he leaves some sort of impression on you so you will remember him. He wants at the very least a special place in your heart.
Itachi Uchiha
🍡He did not kidnap his darling so he could have their jutsu for himself, he definitely didn't. He did it because he lost control over his emotions and given the fact that you are constantly being chased by other power-hungry persons, he got triggered too much because he knows that some will hurt you to get what they want since you can not die. And afterwards Itachi just has to be really careful so that no one will find out because you are no ordinary person. You are famous and a living legend for your achievement and it'll cause a huge motion if he is being sighted with you because everyone will know afterwards, including the Akatsuki and he can expect that Pain will definitely want you to be a part of his organization since you not only have a very gifted ability, but might also possess knowledge and forgotten jutsu from long time ago. And Itachi doesn't want to force you to live the same life as him, even if you can't be killed on such missions.
🍡Itachi knows that he doesn't have long to live anyways and he already accepted that fact, he has his plans in mind for this. So he knows he won't be there for too long to protect you from all the greedy and selfish people which is why he might plan on making Sasuke look after you once he dies and he tells you about this as well, even though he knows you can handle yourself very well on your own as well. He respects people who are older than him and for that reason he might be far more respectful to the s/o than he would be already and he isn't embarrassed about it. Similar to Shisui he also knows that after his death his darling might find someone else and he won't be angry with them for it. They shouldn't spend their whole life grieving over him since he wants them to be happy. The only person he might ever tell willingly about his darling is Kisame since he is next to his younger brother the only person he really trusts with his darling.

I am unfaithfully yours, for better or worse.
IkeSen Ranmaru x Mai (mc)
In which Mai knows Ranmaru is a spy... but falls in love with him despite knowing better. And she thinks it's about high time she took matters into her own hands, fate be damned.
tw: mentions of blood and injury (no death), mentions of war and torture but nothing detailed in the slightest, ikesen spoilers! bits & pieces from all sorts of different routes tho so it's all jumbled up lore. please lmk if i forgot to tag anything!
──────────── 〔✿〕 ────────────
- mai knows by now that ranmaru is a spy, and she tries to secretly meet up with kennyo to talk him out of this war
( cue sentimental flashbacks to peaceful days sneaking off to peach trees at the outskirts of azuchi, a montage of sunshine and smiles )
- she tells him that revenge will only bring more death to the people and that peace would be the only salvation for them all
- after things go south (motonari shows up) ranmaru enters and covers for her to escape
. . .
- fast forward to a break in battle with oda vs the uesugi-takeda
- mai makes a sort of sleep bomb to knock out their enemies and save ieyasu, who had been captured after injury
- sasuke helps mai carry him out to safety, then goes back to pretend to be unconscious with the others
- he didn't knock out bc mai had given him a special mask to filter it out previously w/out his knowledge (sasuke just thought it was a nice gift, or perhaps a way to tell him his old one was in need of replacing)
- escapes back to oda forces with ieyasu in tow (albeit slowly and stealthily)
- after returning, mai and ranmaru go off to be distractions while the warlords strategize and wait for ieyasu to get patched up
- they (mitsuhide) recognize that ranmaru is too agile for a page, he almost seems like a ...ninja? and wonder where/when mai learned how to fight and plan like she's doing now
- the two had always been very close after she saved ranmaru in the beginning of her stay, but this seemed like practiced ease between the two... surely not..?
- they find out (or rather confirm) that mai is from the future, and ask if she saved ieyasu bc he's important to the timeline and such, to which she says she can't explain anything in the future bc of the dangers of the butterfly effect
- mai explains certain things in the past that didn't happen due to her intervention and why she's so worried about the future now with this odd three-way war (the past being nobunaga & kenshin/shingen's deaths)
- she then explains that while she was out luring and distracting enemies, she ran into yoshimoto on her way back
(cue flashback)
- mc runs into yoshimoto, both armed with a single weapon (his fan, her dagger) but no desire to fight one another. it is implied yoshimoto may harbor feelings towards mc or at least certainly cares for her safety
- they trade information regarding kennyo: she explains that she believes he's working with motonari, to which yoshimoto confirms, adding on that they've teamed up with kicho and the former shogun (and his dogs daimyos)
- they question each other about things and find out that 1) mai has met up with him privately when she tried to save ranmaru and 2) yoshimoto has been contacted for recruitment from this entourage of third party enemies. yoshimoto wants nothing to do with them, but his former clanmates want nothing but war and vengeance, so he's caught between a rock and a hard place at the moment (hence his current disappearance from the battles)
- they decide to part ways once ranmaru comes looking for her, & they all can't help but worry
- when they get back though, having arrived separately, mai is greeted by the news that the oda forces are tending to ieyasu.. and notices they seem to have constrained ranmaru for questioning while she was explaining the info she got from yoshimoto (which they obviously question how/why she got as well)
- she explains that they're friends from before they knew anything about their alliances, and that they only exchanged info on third party enemies, not about their own groups
- mitsuhide outs ranmaru as kennyo's spy n felt of everything, which prompts mai uses herself as a hostage
- she explains everything with his situation and how he's not actually on either side, but rather torn between people he admires: kennyo, who raised him like a father, and nobunaga, who took him in and gave him his current environment to flourish in
- obviously however, the oda forces don't care bc a spy's a spy, and they're about ready to beat him to death for answers before...
- ...mai holds up a knife to her own throat and attempts a last ditch bargain, trying to judge her worth after all that's just transpired. "if i mean anything, you'll keep him alive, but otherwise.. you lose us both, and all the info we have"
- they don't believe she'll do it, though their eyes widen as she slices across her neck to get their attention, but when they still don't budge, mai proceeds to stab herself right in the chest (trying to purposely aim for where it wouldn't kill her.. but they don't know that)
- everyone proceeds to panic, shoving her off to the medical tent, whilst keep ranmaru captive (he's too horrified from the sight of his love flashing before his eyes to do much of anything except get pushed around)
. . .
- flash forward to mc waking up at ieyasu's palace, extremely weak and in excruciating pain
- he explains that she's been out for a little over a month now, and has received surgery and multiple treatments even just to be stable. he wonders how she even survived at all
- she asks (as best as she is currently able to) as to why she was kept alive.. and whatever happened to ranmaru after that day
- he explains that while they believe she is aiming for peace and don't see her as too much of a threat, it was mainly bc they wanted more info she had about the enemies, and wanted to know how to build her her sleep bombs, etc.
- ieyasu also explains that ranmaru's been in the dungeons and they've been.. questioning him, but she knows exactly what that entails, grimacing both in pain for herself and his sake
- on the other side, after roughly a month's worth of brutal interrogations, a battered ranmaru emerges from the dungeons, granted an audience in the chambers usual reserved for war council
- nobunaga explains he has no use for a page who can't even pick what side he's on, and that he is not to return until he (at the very least) finally has the conviction to pick a master. deems him weak and spineless and all matter of insults, in front of present company of course
- ieyasu arrives just after the meeting starts with news of mai's brief awakening, to which ranmaru lights up immediately, relieved that she's even alive after all this time
- he asks if he can see her but before the others can say no, ieyasu says oh why the hell not, might as well let him see once her before you cast him out. although it comes out in a very him way, "he's had every chance to kill us before and let them all slip.. let alone the pitiful state the two are in. if people this weak could take over my castle, i wouldn't be here in the first place."
- and so they end up going to visit mai over at ieyasu's palace, but she's unconscious again due to the pain, especially after from more bitter medication and dealing with treatment when they'd spoken last. she even had to bite down on towels bc of the pain she endured
- mai's hand twitches at some point while the two are talking, and ranmaru holds it while crying, somewhat glad she can't see the depressing state he's currently in
- ieyasu explains that if he finally decides what side he's on, he's got a little place nearby he can stash him to update him on her wellbeing until she recovers, but that he's not to tell a single soul. they can decide what to do from there once she gives the oda the info they need
- after ranmaru leaves, ieyasu questions whether he's helping her because she had saved him so recklessly on enemy lines... or...
- (turns out he's secretly a hopeless romantic and he admires her courage and their dedication to each other, so he wants to help since they're genuinely nice people, all things considered. they didn't really want to fight in the first place, and he understands that.... but also he kinda feels like he owes mai and sasuke after that last battle)
- eventually, after thorough recovery, mai and ranmaru run off together, never once looking back at what was once their peaceful home in azuchi. they secretly consult sasuke for help, as they are unsure if to find somewhere to hide after kennyo's recent defeat/capture, or whether to go back to her time since he no longer has any family or where to go, and neither does mai now after they ran away
and from there, decisions must be made.....

I want to ask you a question but I don’t know how to phrase it and I’m always scared that I’ll annoy you. I’m curious about what timeline you think of as “canon” in your own head? Or what AU is your favorite? Like a non massacre AU being most interesting or an anti-ending with sasuke traveling with Taka? Just wondering what world is most interesting to you I guess? Since you’ve written about so many.
My ‘canon timeline’ is canon, to which I mostly add ‘explanations’ and ‘additions’ to deepen certain moments. Since you mentioned ending related parts I’ll stick to that, like what happened to Sasuke being imprisoned, brainwashed and tamed into submission -basically my fic In The Dark (ff.net/ao3)- and what happens after, when tamed Sasuke becomes loyal to N*ruto to an extreme level, ackowledging him like the one who defeated/saved him and to whom he owes the utmost respect, for whom he’d do anything and from whom he’d take anything, like in my fic Of Feathers and Fangs (ff.net/a03). I don’t know and don’t want to know details of the new shit, but for me it’s pretty much also what I wrote here and here. Both fics and scenarios don’t change canon timeline, they just deepen it and make it angstier and darker.
(I call this canon behind the screen. But ppl with poor understanding should realize it’s still my headcanons. And since it’s my blog I call my headcanons of more adult and dark N*r events however I want, like ‘canon behind the screen’. Got it?)
My fic In The Dark and what happened to Sasuke in prison is pretty much a starting point for more canon divergent AUs. But they’re not consistent like those fans who after the ending decided that Sas and Nar will travel the world and that’s all (lol sorry but it’s not even IC for Nar. But I don’t want Nar stans bitching, so I gotta repeat it’s my headcanon and opinion).
Like, other than OFAF it can branch into totally canon divergent territory, like the AU I described in What He Wanted (ff.net/ ao3), where Sasuke revives Itachi and a lot of stuff happens before the brothers are free from Konoha’s chains. Or in its kinda lighter version, which I developed a little through anime screenshots edits as the Travel The World AU. That could be ‘real’ or...huh.
It could also branch into the other post-ending AU, Broken Things (ff.net/ao3), which is about Shinden/The Last Sasuke wandering and finding an imprisoned and forgotten Shisui. I like that one a lot but ppl didn’t care about it so I kinda lost motivation.
Or into a Kakasasu post ending AU where after the imprisonment, instead of leaving, Sasuke lives with Kakashi as his guardian, and unresolved issues resurface.
I tend to stick to some in a certain period, then come up with another and do the same. But also return to some after some time.
I do have a comfort canon divergent AU of Sasuke in jail saved by Team Taka and travelling with them, it’s a cute warm thought to which I might add some angsty/hurt-comfort moments some of which I wrote here and here (most are abt their shippuuden time but they can also work as post ending) or some darker ones with little dark-ish Juugo/Sasuke or Suigetsu/Sasuke moments because I like dark things and I think that even if freed from Konoha’s grip and brainwashing, Sasuke would still feel guilty for ‘killing’ Itachi.
I have other not ending related AUs.
Like the Rogue Uchiha Brothers AU where the massacre happens but Itachi and Sasuke escape and live as rogues, moving from villages so to not be caught, doing odd shinobi-ish and not shinobi-like jobs. This can or cannot branch/become the
Akatsuki Uchiha Brothers AU where like the previous one, the brothers escaped from the massacre and Itachi joined Akatsuki, and so did Sasuke as he got older. I like this one cause it gives interaction to a lot of characters and there’s also Team Taka, as Orochimaru’s subordinates and later Sasuke’s team, as in this AU Orochimaru didn’t leave.
I also have some non massacre AUs like the Hokage Itachi AU where Sasuke is his personal Anbu. More or less in this scenario I set Black Roses (ff/ao3) and True Colors (ff.net/ao3). I also have another I didn’t write anywhere cause it’s dark and the way ppl are now it would just be a waste of time and energy).
More non massacre AU: also Victims of Peace (ff.net/ ao3) which is one of my most beloved AUs, that actually, in my head, has a darker counterpart, Those Who Remain, a sort of VOP divergent AU where, in the same universe as VOP but before the VOP main events take place, Itachi dies and Sasuke and Shisui suffer in different way. This too is too dark for the fandom.
Anyway all my AUs have dark moments because I’m a bad person and I like dark things lol
fyi like every other human I tend to be annoyed when I’m insulted, judged, disrespected, belittled, treated in a condescendent way.
Also when I find an interesting blog I scroll through it a lot, so I get annoyed when I receive asks that would have easily found an answer if only the person scrolled a little more. It feels like such person doesn’t have much interest or time, and I know it can happen because I don’t have much interest and time to reply to the same thing over and over.
Maybe not everyone realizes it, but those who address a blog as anonymous don’t expose themselves, who they are, what they like. They can say whatever they want with no consequence. Some take this too far

Questions about OC’s people make
I’m answering this by a separate post instead of your ask, since not everyone online is friendly, and I would never want to even have a smidge of risk fall onto anyone
Don’t worry, skip to TLDR for a summery
That kind of idea has been around for a long time. People like making OC’s so they can interact with canon characters, it’s part of the fun! It’s also not unusual for people to try and make their character the star of a series (you see this a lot with characters that tend to be labeled mary/gary stu).
Now I am a BIG LOVER of OC’s and fan characters, and I’ve seen a lot of good/bad/ugly/awesome ones. (I’m also gonna age myself a lot here, so excuse me for that)
This gonna be a long ride, I apologize
Lemme age myself for a moment
Fandoms have had a lot of self insert/or ocs that change the main story line for a long, long, time. A really good example of this is the Naruto fandom (the toxic beast, would not recommend time traveling to join this fandom in the early days they can and will hurt you, but they are better now from what understand). The biggest example of this is when the original series ended BEFORE the age up arc/shippuuden
A lot of people didn’t like that Sasuke (person A) left the village and never came back in the main series. So, a lot of people (a lot of people who had a crush on person A mainly) made their oc’s alter the timeline to where he stayed.
It doesn’t even have to be this extreme, it can be as easy as wanting to participate in an event that happened in canon and changing it so OC solves the problem and alters the timelines (say to keep a character they really enjoy from dying).
A lot of time this happens because an event happens in canon people don’t like when a character dies, storyline takes a turn no one cares for (LOOKING AT YOU BEASTARS!)). So their OC’s/Self Inserts adjust it to a storyline that the reader/creator enjoys.
Now the problem with this in most fandoms is that there is ONE main storyline.
Example again, Naruto (this fandom wont let me go HELP)
This series is very linear, and there’s not wiggle room implicating there could be more universes/aus.
An example of the opposite is BOTH Voltron (Netflix adaptation) and Dragon Ball
Both series have messing with alternate universes, and timelines. Dragon ball goes a bit extreme and implies in the Xenoverse games there can be infinite alternate realities whereas Voltron implied a butt ton (scientific measurement LOL) of alternate universes.
This is important because adding in big events NOT canon to the timeline is easier since there’s a lot of different universes this COULD have taken place, which leaves the main canon storyline alone and safe.
So if they added say...a sibling of person X or Y, there is the possibility in one of the MANY timelines/realities they could have existed.
This is a problem for MOST series because a lot of fandoms don’t have this, and so adding a character in can become a problem. So most of the times people have to imply it’s an AU character OR add them in anyway for the sake of a story/fanfic and just accept canon is dead and we have killed it (for good, better, or worse.).
NOW - To the Juuni Taisen
This series ALSO has a series to paths/alternate timelines people could work in for fan characters. The problem lies in the fact that it implies that despite there being multiple paths, Nezumi destroys those realities by not choosing those routes as his primary.
It’s actually a great tie in to the fact he loves video games.
If going down path A doesn’t work, he reloads the save and tries path B and so on. But if he decides that path J is the one he wants to continue playing on, then he can not both play J and A, B, C, D ect. He can only canonically play path J, since that is the canon path he has chosen.
When people make oc’s usually they want to be a part of the series or have a character interact with certain characters. Sometimes it’s to change the story line, and sometimes it’s to alter (intentional or not) the main storyline. To be honest, in this case, unless the character doesn’t interfere with the Juni Taisen it leaves a LOT of limited wiggle room for ocs in the series. Why? Well they all DIE, so if you do want to interact with the characters with an oc, it has to be before and not after, unless you have Nezumi. Everyone dies but him, so if you wanna smooch Usagi’s cute face or have your OC take Tora to therapy, you gotta have all it take place before or in an AU, OR alter the canon storyline.
Now back to the different paths, why not choose them? Again, it’s because of Nezumi (this boy is both blessed and cursed). He loads path J, making Au’s possible and other paths canon, but they canonically never actually happened because he CHOSE one path before the others.
So if you do want to say ‘my character was part of X path’ that’s great! But I think a lot of people may realize that those alternate paths got erased from existence when Nezumi chose a different path. Since he did that, there are specific ways around it, but it makes it hella hard.
Ways around it
1) Alter canon timeline via Nezumi, and have him bring them back
2) Have ocs before canon
3) Time travel (I use this for my own oc, which I would be happy to go in depth with should anyone ask)
4) Alter canon timeline
I’m really not surprised OC’s are made to interact with the canon story in this fandom, or the fact they drastically change it. No one really enjoys seeing a favorite die and stay dead, especially when there was a chance they could have come back (not that they should, I love you Usagi but ya need therapy).
AND that’s just part of it
Another big part is wish fulfillment.
If OC was part of series then when X happened oc would have been there to help. That changes the storyline, but it makes the person who created the OC happy.
Example:
Ending of Beastars (I’d recommend the series for older audiences but the ending sucks nuggets) was REALLY unsatisfying for me. I had already been doing a fan comic based on it, but since I didn’t like the ending I’m going to actually redo my comic and change the ending (I will put an AU disclaimer because, obviously) but it will fulfill MY WISH for an ending that is satisfying to me
But again, Beastars doesn’t have multiple timelines, so I have to change canon for my series to make sense within it.
Another subset of this is people who want to be part of the series due to escapism. They want a happy ending for a series they enjoy, and they want to be part of it (this gets in to more self insert territory). Sometimes life is shitting on them hardcore and so to have a little power back by their fan stories, it makes real life just a smidge more bearable.
LONG STORY SHORT
Any OC’s added to series is somewhat altering canon. Juuni Taisen is unique in that it has a lot of alternate timelines, but the problem is the timelines get cleared from existence the moment Nezumi chooses a different path.
Personally, I think it can be fun to work around the constraints of the series, but if you’re going to go in depth with OC’s in this fandom, you do have to alter a lot of the series in a lot of ways. It’s valid to ask ‘Why not just choose a different path? Or do an AU?’ but a lot of people want to be part of the series themselves or have an OC to make the series ok.
I used to be a stickler about the believability of OC’s when I was younger (I was especially critical when I was taking college level English courses in high school) but I’m not like that anymore. This is in part to, again, the Naruto fandom.
I’ve loved OC’s forever, but when I made one for that series people were awful. People would send me anons telling me to kill myself, how much my writing and art sucked, ect. At the time I was a really sensitive bean. I stopped writing, I stopped doing a lot of artwork, and I stopped creating. I took a lot of it super personally (thanks anxiety and depression). BUT then something terrible happened.
I don’t know if anyone here would remember when the series ended completely, but when it did the fandom went nuts. I don’t mean just whining Destial level, I mean NUTS. They threatened to kill the creator if he didn’t change the ending, they sent threats to his family, they got violent as HELL.
They went way to far. It was really kind of scary?
But it made me realize something. There will always be someone who doesn’t like what you create, and there will be always someone who will criticize the way you write, draw, express yourself creatively.
Don’t let it stop you
TLDR;
People make OC’s and alter storylines for a variety of reasons. That’s okay. No, you don’t have to enjoy all the content people make, and YES you can have your opinions about it. I don’t like every OC or fanfic I come across. Some OC’s are wonderful, and some I don’t like. It’s my opinion. It’s okay to have an opinion. You are allowed not to enjoy things. You are allowed to think critically.
However, I do think people have a right to enjoy themselves. They’re making content for them, not for me, and that’s okay. I don’t have to read it, I don’t have to look at it, and I don’t have to spend time going through content I don’t enjoy. If they wanna make a character who supermans and saves the everyone in the Juni Taisen and flies off to mars, I may not like it but I will 100% support their creativity and right to do it.
Take that cringe culture and throw it away. Do what makes you happy. It wont always makes sense in canon, or it may not be the most clever way to do something, but do it anyway. Life is hard, fandoms are meant to be fun. As long as you’re not hurting or attacking anyone, you can be be as cringe as you’d like.
You all can make OC’s however you want, anyway you want. We all deserve a little serotonin.
Either way, I am here to support you and all your creations.
#long post#this kinda turned into a big analysis of OC's in general and not just the Juni Taisen#I don't know if I answered this correctly#but if I missed something please send it in again#I kind of went on a little bit of a tangent

I’d Choose You Again and Again
Genre: One-shot, Angst, Hurt/Comfort Rating: T Sasuhina Month 2020 Theme: Day 3 (I’d Choose You Again and Again)
A/N: I’m going to make a series of one-shots for Sasuhina Month 2020 that are within the same timeline/universe, so please feel free to read the other parts if you want more context or expanded story. They’re not really going to be in order though as they are supposed to work as stand-alones...but I might make a list indicating its order once SHmonth is over. Currently trying to do as many of the days as I can, but it’s been hard due to work x.x Anyways, hope you all are enjoying SH month because I certainly am at reading and looking at everyone’s creations :)
@sasuhinamonth (In case this doesn’t show up in the tags)
“ What do you mean she has memory loss?”
Sasuke glared at the blonde woman in anger. It had been eight months since the incident. He had been waiting for eight months for her to wake up.
Eight Months.
Eight months of sleepless nights.
Eight months of drowning in his own sorrows as he waited for her to wake up.
Sasuke had waited eight months for her to wake up, only to find out that she had suffered severe memory. He rustled his hair in frustration. It had grown again. The black strands had now started to reach the end of his neck. He hadn’t cut them since the incident. She had always been the one to do it.
“ How much did she lose?”
The woman looked carefully at the chart in her hand before looking at him again. He noted the way she knitted her brows together and how her lips had tightened to a frown. Tsunade wasn’t one to bore such a serious expression; she had often complained that it would give her wrinkles despite being over twice his age. However, this only meant that whatever she was about to say to him would be bad.
“ About eight years.”
Sasuke felt something deep within him crumble. His heart sank at hearing the news. Eight years of memories had been erased. Whatever had poisoned her had erased eight years worth of memories. It had reset her life to when she was seventeen. She would no longer remember anything past that year.
It meant that she would no longer remember him.
“ Will she be able to regain those memories?” He managed to ask. Tsunade gave him a somber look before exhaling a long, frustrated sigh.
“ We don’t know yet.”
Sasuke wondered why the heavens were so cruel to him.
He must have done something in his past life to have experienced this much pain in his life. He had already lost his family, his clan at a young age. It had scarred him and robbed him of a normal childhood. He had become a rogue nin for years as a result, hurting the people who had only ever cared for him. He had been a walking void until the War occurred. It was then that he had finally made a small turn to fix the strayed path that he had taken so long ago. He had ended the War with his best friend and comrade. He had saved the world from the clutches of evil itself. He had travelled, learned, and grew from them into a much more mature and stable version of his adult self. He was able to finally convince the village that had been the one to destroy his clan in the first place, to acknowledge and show the world the mistakes and cruelty they had made towards his clan. He was finally able to call that very same village his home. And finally, after years of disregarding the emotion of love, he had finally found her.
He had finally found someone who he could love with his very soul. Someone who he could trust with his life that wasn’t his best friend nor teammate. Sasuke had found someone who he loved more dearly than life itself.
Yet it had been taken away from him.
She had been taken away from him.
What was their relationship before this? They were acquaintances that were connected through the blood of their clan, which had dissipated after the Uchiha were murdered. They were classmates during their academy days, though the two had barely spoken to one another due to the circumstances of his past that had made him reject any social interaction. They were considered enemies after he had defected from the village, although even then they did not interact with each other much. It was only after the War, after a couple of years of healing and growing, did they finally develop a relationship with each other.
Yet now, they had essentially become strangers again.
“ Sasuke, Hinata is ready for you now.” A voice called out.
It was none other than Sakura, his pink haired teammate. Although they had shared a rocky past together, Sasuke was and would forever be grateful to her. She had risked her own life to save Hinata’s, despite the chances of her living being nearly zero. Yet Sakura had somehow managed to create what most would call a miracle. For that, Sasuke could only thank her.
It was also thanks to her and Naruto that he was able to survive the last eight months. He could recall the restless nights the three of them had experienced together, though it was mostly the two of them trying their best to comfort him. They would drag him everywhere, from training in the open fields in the morning to dining at different restaurants at night. Despite being in a relationship with each other, they would often take turns and spend countless nights over at his home, making sure that he was properly taking care of himself.
It was in those moments where Sasuke truly appreciated their presence in his life.
“ She’s currently with Naruto right now. I have to get back to my patients, take care of her okay?” She said.
Sasuke nodded to his friend before leaving the room. He could hear her silently whisper good luck before heading back to her job. When he finally arrived at her room, he could instantly see Hinata and Naruto talking with each other.
“ T-thank you, N-naruto-kun. I...really appreciate you c-coming to h-help me discharge,” Hinata stuttered.
He could see the blush on her pale cheeks.
“ No problem!” Naruto replied as he rubbed the top of his head in embarrassment.
Sasuke could feel his heart sink as he watched them.
When they sensed his presence, his blonde friend quickly rushed over to him in joy muttering how he was finally done talking with Tsunade. Yet when his dark eyes had met her large, white ones, he noted how the blush she had shown earlier had already disappeared. Instead, she only greeted him with a polite smile.
A smile meant for a stranger.
“ It’s time to go. I’ll carry your stuff.”
Hinata gave him a slight nod before shyly leaving the room. After packing the last of her things, Sasuke also started to head out as well. However, he needed to make sure to thank his friend first.
“ Thanks for keeping her company,”
Naruto gave his friend a smile.
“ No problem! I’m glad to see her awake now,”
Sasuke looked at the woman nervously waiting for him. She was already near the end of the hallway before she had stopped to wait for the two of them to come out. He couldn’t help but stare at the woman. The sun seemed to touch her skin in such a way that made her look even more beautiful than she already was despite having almost died not too long ago.
“ I am too.”
“ Are you going to be okay?”
He turned to look at Naruto again. Without a hint of hesitation, Sasuke already knew his answer.
“ If I had to choose between having to suffer because she doesn’t remember me anymore and her dying, I would rather suffer for the rest of my life knowing that she may never remember anything that ever happened between us if it means that she’ll be able to live the rest of her own life alive and safe.”
Naruto nodded his head in acknowledgement.
“ If you need help, make sure to let us know. We’ll be here.”
“ I know. Thanks.”
When he had finally walked close enough to stand next to her, he was greeted with another polite smile. It hurt knowing that she only saw him as a stranger now, but Sasuke had meant what he had said to Naruto. Despite the sorrow that he was feeling deep within his heart, Sasuke did not regret anything.
He had eight months to wallow in his own self-pity and pain. Now the woman who he loved more than anyone else in the world had awakened. She was awake and needed him. She needed him to help regain her lost memories as well as to help her heal the wounds that remained scarred on her body and mind. Looking at her now only deepened his resolve to protect her.
She was alive.
And that was all that mattered.
“ Let’s go home now,” Sasuke said as he held his hand out for her.
He could see that Hinata was taken back by his gesture. And for the longest time, she did not say anything nor did she move from her spot. She only stared at his stretched out hand with a mix of confusion and anxiety. He felt a slight bit of guilt formed around his chest at making her feel pressured, so he slowly retreated in an attempt to make her more comfortable.
However, just as he was about to do so, Sasuke could see Hinata slowly and gently place her hand on top of his before letting her finger grip his own. He was surprised at her reciprocation, but did not lose his composure. He could see her slightly reddened cheeks and nervous lips as she let out a small breath before giving him a slight smile.
“ Y-yes, let’s...let's go home.”
This time, he noticed the smile she had given him was not the polite one that she had given him earlier.
Rather it was a smile that held a bit of nervousness and uncertainty.
Yet despite that, he could see a bit of something else. Something that was unfamiliar since she had woken up.
This time it was a smile that held a bit of trust towards him.
A smile that held a bit of trust and hope.
And that was enough.
Enough for him to know that the eight months of sorrow he had experienced was worth it.
Enough for him to know that despite having severe memory loss, her being alive was more important than anything else.
Enough for him to know that what he had said to Naruto was the truth.
It was enough for now.
Enough for Sasuke.

Hey, I was reading your fic (I really like it by the way! Sasuke's, my favorite character, and I think you wrote him really well :D), and I was wondering, what's your writing process? I know everyone has something different that works for them, but how do you plan out your chapters, or get ideas, or things like that (very vague, I know, I'm sorry)?
Hiiiiiiiiiiii!!!!!!!!!! Thank you sugar plum for reading Maybe I’m Paying for the Things I’ve Done and liking my characterization of Sasuke, it’s very heartwarming and I appreciate it.
As for my writing process, oof. As you know everyone’s writing process is really different and it has been a joy to learn more about other people’s process to help figure out what works for me. This is something you can absolutely cherry pick with and try things out for the first time.
Timing: some people write better at certain points during the day, some people can start writing at 5am or write till 3am in the morning with a late start. I am a mix of both. I can start writing around 9am because that’s when my internal ticker is like “Let’s go to work now!” It’s just how my school and internship schedule line up. I also just write when I am bored(while in class sometimes) and late at night if I really have the momentum. Which happened for some of the chapters I have written for Maybe I’m Paying for the Things I’ve Done. So figure out what works for you. Also, timing myself sometimes helps, I use Pomodoro as a way to keep track of my work, I don’t necessarily take my short breaks.
Initial phase of writing: I draft first and I backwards outline as I go along and then I hit a wall. The idea circulates in the back of my mind and I either get a sense of a scene or a situation that I want the characters to go into and I start writing. Writing the story informs me where it’s going to go, it comes to me during the process. However, I will hit a wall. The fics I write are rarely short(shoutout to the people who can do short and sweet, your sense of pacing is unreal and I bow to your greatness) so there is a lot of worldbuilding, plot, and character development that needs to happen. Important thing to note, just because you are writing fanfiction doesn’t mean you can skip worldbuilding. It is very important!!!!!! It doesn’t need to be the crazy amount that I do but you need to set your reader up in a place and time so give some context.
Timeline: Things happen at certain places and times, and my characters will be a certain age when it happens, so I need to keep track. One of the walls I’ve hit is that for my current posted fic Sasuke spends time in jail, but how much time was not made clear in my non existent early planning and that changes the way things happen. And how old he is, and how much time should I spend on that prison sentence. If it was a long time then I need to talk about it as a life event that will have consequences throughout the entire fic, or if he was just detained until his lawyers came that changes Sasuke’s character. It also is a good way to talk about the criminal justice system of Konoha that I am making up. So I keep track of everyone’s ages, and birthdays, and sometimes I change them. I mean it is really hard for me to write baby ninja that go out into the battlefield when they are four years old and not make the entire fic about a shitty world like that. I don’t want to do that, it’s too fucking hard, and fluff feeds my soul. Also, seasons!!! That changes the way you set up your environment as well, from what I can tell Fire Country should have a monsoon season since they are so forested and are located near the equator of their world. So when that happens, if I decide to include that, is important for pacing of the story. I mean how long should this go on? Also, romance in the rain *hitn hint wink wink* who knows.
Outlining: I didn’t use to be an outline and to some extent I still am not. I have done a previous post explaining a little bit of it but I backwards outline to keep track of what is happening because it’s a lot of detail and I don’t want to make mistakes. However, spreadsheets are my jam. I didn’t use to be this way but my internship has changed me and now I like spreadsheets as a way to be organized. Huzzah *throws confetti in the air* to being a boring adult person! There are a couple of way to do this but first actual writing notes:
5 commandments of story
Inciting incident
Progressive complications
Crisis
Climax
Resolution
This is something that helped me a lot when it came to structure, because sometimes my plot points are all happening at the same time and I’m like this makes no goddamn sense, what is happening. Story Grid is a podcast, and a book, and a website that can help you talk about structure. They can also talk to you about the Hero's journey. Take or leave whatever works for you because a lot of their stuff doesn’t work for me. But in doing their spreadsheets and exercises I learned what doesn’t work in a story. It’s how I realized pacing was a problem in my writing, and that I needed to take time away.
So they have sample spreadsheets that break down books into scenes, turning points, characters on stage, etc. Take what works and leave what doesn’t.
Back to spreadsheets, I have a story grid one for Maybe I’m Paying for the Things I’ve Done which I will backwards outline for the chapters I have already posted and a weird visual index card thing with the five commandments on my computer to help me figure out what is happening in my story.
It looks kind of like five boxes side by side with the five commandments written on each one.
Sometimes there is more than one box for progressive complication and that is fine, it is also fine if every scene you write doesn’t have a resolution, because by the end of the fic you will have one. I split this up by chapter, expected word count, POV.
Word count: Some people care about this, some people don’t. I don’t write stuff for ‘Maybe’ that is less than 10000 each chapter, there is way too much going on in the fic to do short chapters. For my other works in progress I find that I will be writing shorter, which is both easier and harder because it needs me to be concise and clear. Anyway, I do take notes from Story Grid in this because 50% of my words have to be for my middle build, while 25% each go to the opening hook and to the ending payoff. A scene is about 1200-2000 words.
Wiggle Room: Shit happens, you don’t do as much one day and you do a lot another. It’s okay, your story will evolve at certain points, it will tell you what to do. Don’t worry about it that much.
Struggle/villainy: Protagonists are often defined by their antagonists, and if that is the type of story you are writing make sure you spend just as much time on the villain of your story as you do the hero. They are major actors and deserve the attention. When I talk about the Akatsuki I am thinking that they are an international terrorist organization hellbent on kidnapping people that are systematically treated as weapons. There are a lot of moving parts for this. Also the characters themselves, Pein and Konana are radicalized in my story from peaceful revolutionaries to violent ones because they watched the leader of an institution murder their best friend, that will cause personal and political damage. It informs the way I write them or will.
Sasuke's struggle isn’t necessarily against a person, it is against himself. He wants a home because when he was little the one place where he felt safe was violated by his own brother, that is a hell of a trauma. Then he left his former home to go to Oto. Place has a huge part to play in Sasuke’s characterization and I tag homemaking in my fic because I want to show the process of creating a home for yourself as a process of revival and change and hope and vulnerability. It is a huge emotional labor of love and will be a focal point in the fic. That’s why I spend so much time talking about these goddamn renovations and art deco, it matters. This is a boy who has traveled all over the world and is now trying to put all the pieces of himself into one place, how he does it will be incredibly revealing of his characters.
Character: Emotional arcs are important for everyone. Try to figure out what your character is going to go through. It helps so much. Victoria Schwab asks her characters three questions:
What do they fear?
What do they want?
What are they willing to do to get what they want?
See if this helps. Also, understand that you got to develop your side characters as well, they act as a foil for the main character and add richness to the story, you will notice if they are flat. Understand the dynamics they bring to the story and to the world. Are they a woman in a field that is more socially acceptable for men? How does that affect them? What does gender look like in this world and how does this affect your characterization? Have they gone through physical/emotional trauma? Because that shit will keep coming up in a story, healing takes time. Also this is a fanfic, do whatever you want honey bear.
Vocab: the lovely @slexenskee told me to have a running doc of vocabulary and I am trying to do that.
I also have a running doc for a fic/character where I put all my brainstorming, little scenes, lines, vibes, questions into. And a doc for the synopsis of any new fic ideas I get.
Inspiration: Read, a lot. I read fics, I read fiction and fantasy books, I read non fiction and I read about other people’s writing process. I read the news, I read twitter threads, I read random quotes on Pinterest. I watch tv shows and take note of how they do characterization or pacing or plot. I listen to music, I couldn’t live without it. I am on Pinterest looking for vibes or aesthetics for my fics. When I first started writing, since my fic was inspired by another fic, I was worried it would be too similar, that worry is fading because I am doing more writing, and more reading as well. But you must consume culture in order to produce it. Also take breaks, sometimes you figure stuff out if you leave it alone or talk to friends about it. If you reach out to me about it, I will do my best to help so feel free.
IMPORTANT: DO NOT BE A RACIST/HOMOPHOBIS/TRANSPHOBIC/MISOGYNIST. UNDERSTAND THAT WHEN YOU WRITE A FANFICTION THE CHARACTERS ARE CODED IN A CERTAIN WAY. DON’T GO AROUND MAKING PEOPLE OF COLOR WHITE OR MORE LIGHT SKINNED THAN THEY ARE. WOMEN AND NON BINARY PEOPLE EXIST ALWAYS, IF YOU ARE NOT WRITING THEM INTO YOUR WORLD THAT MEANS YOU ARE MARGINALIZING THEM IN YOUR WORLD AND IN YOUR MIND. IF YOU ARE CISGENDERED BE DAMN CAREFUL ABOUT WRITING TRANS NARRATIVES, PROBABLY DON’T. WHEN I DECIDED TO INCLUDE MY OWN CULTURE INTO SASUKE’S CHARACTER AND PAST I DIDN’T MEAN TO MAKE HIM LESS EAST ASIAN BUT TO ADD PARTS OF MYSELF TO THE WORLD. ACCEPT AND ADAPT TO CRITICISM COMING YOUR WAY IN THIS SENSE. I AM SURE YOU WILL BE FINE, THIS IS JUST A STANDARD DISCLAIMER.
This was really long, and I hope you won't mind. Thanks again for this question, and let me know how your writing goes. Also listen to Deadline City the podcast.

Hi, I'm a huge fan of your work. Your style is just beautiful. If you are interested would you write about sasusaku married life...Sakura losing her memory and Sasuke helping her go through their history together and a clueless Sakura realising how much Sasuke Love's his wife I hope you find the concept interesting Much love from Germany
Sending you love from the US! Thank you for the kind words. I’m so sorry that this has been sitting in my ask box for a few weeks, it’s been a rough time lately😭 I gave this prompt my best shot in as short amount a time as possible, and I’m definitely rusty from not doing any creative writing lately. Still, I hope that you like it!
The room slowly comes into focus as her eyes open with caution, sensitive to the sunlight that peeks through the curtains of this unfamiliar room. Her head pounds as she raises herself up carefully into a sitting position, only noticing that she wasn’t alone when she feels a strong arm wrap around her middle to help her. She turns towards the smooth, deep voice that the arm belongs to, trying to sort out her thoughts.
“Take it easy,” he had said.
Why? Where was she? How did she end up here? The questions swirling through her mind only make her dizzy. Worried, mismatched eyes meet her own as she thanks him quietly. Sensing her reservation, he slowly withdraws his arm from her waist, assuring that she is comfortable first.
“Can you tell me what happened?”
Sakura watches as the man in front of her avoids her gaze, clearly upset about something. He was handsome, she noted mentally.
“You’ve been unconscious for four and a half days. You may have suffered a traumatic brain injury after sustaining a substantial blow to your head.”
She processes for a moment before her medical training kicks in.
“I’m assuming after stabilizing me, there should be some imaging right? Can I see the MRI and CT scan results?”
His demeanor seems to lighten up a bit at this for some reason. Sasuke was unsure of whether she’d retained her medical knowledge and figured it would be a sure sign of whether she’d suffered any memory loss. So far, it seemed like that hadn’t been the case.
“Yes, I’ll go get them now.” He leaves the room for a few minutes, returning with a nurse who carries a file in hand. She passes the file to Sakura while asking a few standard questions about her current state. They go through some basic motor function tests together before the nurse leaves them.
Sakura runs her hand through her hair as she turns through the pages of her file, reading the radiologist’s notes. As she brings her hand down, the sharp prick she feels on her scalp indicates that she’s caught something in her hair. Carefully disentangling her hand from her otherwise well-groomed hair, she stares at the ring on her finger.
“Huh. I wonder when I got this ring,” she muses, unaware that Sasuke is watching her. She turns her hand this way and that, allowing the light to catch the ruby at different angles.
“I gave that to you, Sakura.” She startles at both his presence and the response to a question she thought she had been asking herself. Slow to look up from her hand, Sakura thinks of all of the possible situations in which she would accept such a precious ring from a man she didn’t know.
“I must be a bit confused, considering the head injury and all,” she laughs nervously. “Why would you give me this ring, doctor?”
Sasuke’s breath catches in his throat as he pauses to process what she just said. She’s smiling apologetically at him, her eyes curious as she waits for him to answer. He realizes she isn’t pranking him, as Sakura is sometimes prone to do.
“I gave you that ring, Sakura,” he starts slowly, “because you’re my wife and I wanted to make sure that others were aware. I’m not a doctor.”
The shock that crosses her face confirms it for him - she really didn’t remember who he was. The sinking of his heart into his stomach is accompanied by the heavy weight of anxiety on his chest at the idea of her not knowing who he was. Instinctively, his fingers curl into a fist with anger at himself for letting this happen to her in the first place.
Her gaze travels from his face down to the ring on her left hand and back to him again.
“Are you sure?” Her voice was meek as she was visibly struggling to grasp at any memory that would make this revelation make sense in her head.
He nods before pulling a chair close to her bed. He points to her name in small text at the top of her brain scans, his finger resting under the name “Uchiha.” For a split second, Sakura thinks she’s looking at someone else’s file before reading her own name adjacent to it.
“Uchiha Sakura...” she trails off. “I definitely remember my maiden name being Haruno. So you’re Uchiha...?”
“Sasuke,” he finishes for her, hoping that hearing his name will help to trigger some sort of memory for her.
As he awaits her answer, the doctor cheerfully walks into the room, greeting them both.
“Good to see you awake, Mrs. Uchiha. You gave us a bit of a scare the past few days! Though I wish it were under different circumstances, I’m pleasured to make your acquaintance. I’ve read some of your publications on the effects of war trauma in children and would be interested in discussing some of the treatment programs you use at a later time. How are you feeling?”
“I feel okay.” Sakura absentmindedly turns her ring back and forth on her finger. She and the doctor begin discussing her condition using medical jargon that Sasuke has difficulty keeping up with. He begins to reach towards her, a familiar motion he often initiated between them to comfort her. His hand hovers in hesitation midway between them before he pulls back, afraid to push her too much before she was ready. He listens until they’ve finished discussing her condition, noting Sakura’s unease when the doctor mentions that she is free to leave with her husband after a few days of monitoring. She makes no effort to let the doctor know that she’s lost this part of her memory before he leaves them alone together.
Uncertainty hangs in the difficult silence that’s fallen between them. Where are they supposed to go from here?
“It sounds incredibly familiar,” Sakura starts quietly. “The name Uchiha, I’ve heard it before. I understand that this must be difficult for you and I’m sorry to put you through this if I really am your wife, but would you mind telling me some things that might help me remember? Talking about our....relationship is often helpful in these kinds of situations.” Always sympathetic and worrying about others even with memory loss due to a traumatic injury, she was absolutely the Sakura he knew.
“Sure,” he nods, “where should I start?”
“At the beginning, I suppose,” she says with a shrug and small smile. “How did we meet?” Her attention is focused solely on him as she studies the details of his appearance. Her gaze roams over his somewhat messy hair, noting that it covers his left eye, down his broad shoulders and strong chest, finally realizing that his left arm is missing halfway down his bicep. She decides to ask him about that later.
“We met when we were kids, studying in the academy together. I wouldn’t say we were close, but it was a small class so we knew each other’s names and relative rankings in class.”
Her eyes soften as she thinks through childhood memories filled with fields of flowers and mean little girls. “How lucky of me to say that I met my partner early on in life.”
He studies her quietly before reaching for her hand, hesitating as if to ask for her permission first. She looks down at his fingers near hers, abashedly raising her own hand, placing it into his palm. He wraps his thumb over the back of her hand, rubbing it gently back and forth across her skin. The motion comforts her as she waits for him to continue.
“We were placed on the same three-man squad as genin, along with Naruto. I was struggling a lot during that time, so I tried incredibly hard to keep you both at a distance. I didn’t want to form any bonds because I had decided to dedicate my life to fulfilling a mission for revenge.” His gaze moves away from her as he reminisces on those difficult times in his life. Sakura is patient, encompassed by his story. “But you were annoying,” he chuckles, as Sakura scoffs playfully, feigning indignation. “At first I thought you were just another girl who had superficial feelings for me like our other classmates, but you proved me wrong.”
“How did I do that?”
“On our first mission as a team, I thought that I was going to die. I couldn’t understand at the time why I had put myself in harms way, risking the loss of my vengeance in order to protect someone else. The first thing I woke up to was the sound of your sobs as I felt your weight on my chest. I still remember the pain I felt as you threw your arms around me when you realized I was awake, crying harder than you were before. That was the moment I knew that you truly did care for me, and it was when I realized I cared for you too. I can’t explain my reasons, but I knew I had to protect you, no matter what it cost me.”
His expression is sincere as he turns his gaze towards her, searching for signs of her memory returning to her. She ponders his words for a moment, her lips curved upward in the gentle smile he fell in love with.
“So did you also train as a medic? Is that when we started dating?” He does his best to hide it, but she notices his face fall just slightly at her question. She squeezes his hand gently, quietly expressing her regret. “I’m sorry, Sasuke. I can remember bits and pieces, the way I felt during these times that you’re describing, but the timeline is still fuzzy to me.”
He shakes his head, assuring her that it was okay before he continues. “I left the village in order to continue my training, because I felt that I wasn’t progressing quickly enough in Konoha. You tried to stop me the night that I left; you pleaded, made promises, cried, and told me you loved me. That rooted me in place, and if I’m honest, there was a moment that I truly did consider staying. I had become comfortable with the life and friendships I had built in Konoha by that point. Before then, I couldn’t remember the last person who had genuinely told me they loved me - maybe it was my brother, maybe it was my mother. But in the end, I couldn’t let go of the hatred in my heart that fueled my need for vengeance, and I left. That was the last time I saw you for almost three years.
“During that time, I worked hard to focus solely towards achieving my goal. Kabuto would feed me relevant information about Konoha from time to time, and that’s when I learned that you were training under Tsunade. I remember thinking it was a good fit for you - you always cared for others, you were one of the most intelligent in our class, and your chakra control was better than mine. I felt proud, but I quickly suppressed those feelings, knowing that any bonds I had would get in the way of avenging my clan.”
Sakura’s brows furrow together as she appears to make a connection. “The Uchiha massacre,” she says softly, “that’s right, everyone in your clan was killed. I remember now, hearing my parents talk about the boy in my class who suffered a great tragedy. That must’ve been when I became curious about you.” He watches the sadness creep into her expression as she reconciles with the idea of a child losing his entire clan in one night.
“Is there anything else that you remember?” He’s hopeful at this tidbit of information she provides, wanting to distract her from the feelings her empathy often engulfs her in.
“It’s not perfect, but I have some memory through the Fourth Great Shinobi War. I remember activating my byakugou seal soon after you had joined us, excited to be part of Team 7 once more.”
The corner of his lips lift up into a slight smirk at the memory of Sakura turning the battlefield into her personal playground as she uprooted the ground beneath their feet. “I always knew you were capable.”
The words of praise have her heart rate picking up speed as she remembers the surge of pride she had felt in that moment.
“So...how did we end up together?”
Sasuke runs his thumb across her fingers, watching as each one flexes downward under the slight pressure he applies before squeezing them slightly in his palm. He lays his head on her legs, looking up to see her trying to hide how flustered that makes her. She clears her throat to indicate to him that she’s waiting for an answer.
“You saved Naruto and I from bleeding to death after our battle.” He pauses to allow her time to think this over, wondering if she’ll remember all of the events leading up to that moment. The range of emotions that reflect themselves in her eyes tell him that she does; happiness when the war ended, fear when he announced his plans to take over Konoha, a tinge of pain when he had put her under the genjutsu, and finally overwhelming sadness and relief when she had found them lying next to one another.
“I had decided to travel after being forgiven for my crimes, wanting to see the world that I had blinded myself to for many years. We kept in touch through letters for a while, but I guess that wasn’t enough for you.” Mischief twinkles in his mismatched eyes as he continues, curious as to how she’ll respond. “You came after me one day, asking me if I’d let you join me in my travels. I objected at first.”
“Why is that?”
“Because...I had done enough to hurt you by that point. Not every part of the journey was easy or safe, and I would never forgive myself for letting anything else happen to hurt you on my behalf.” He averts his gaze to their intertwined hands that rest on her lap in front of his face. Sakura brings her other hand to rest on his head, running her fingers through his surprisingly soft hair, hoping to comfort him in his regret.
“I didn’t believe that I deserved someone with such pure intentions as company during this time, and honestly, I still don’t. I vowed to protect you through anything that came our way long before I gave you that ring, and I’ve unfortunately failed yet again.” She was in the hospital at this very moment, struggling to regain her memory of him, due to his own shortcomings. The irony of it left a bitter taste in his mouth.
Strands of her rosy hair tickle against his cheek as she leans down towards him to place a gentle kiss on his temple. “I’m okay,” she whispers. “I’m still here because of you.”
He turns his head to look up at her, finding tears welling up in her brilliantly bright eyes. “I’m sorry for worrying you, Sasuke-k-“
He gently removes his hand from her grip, only to replace it on the back of her neck before raising his head up to meet her lips with his own. Raising himself into a sitting position before he breaks their connection, Sasuke pulls her into his chest. The steady pulse of his heart against his skin was a welcome comfort to Sakura as her tears soaked into the material of his shirt.
“I’m so glad you’re okay,” his voice wavers. “I’m sorry that I let this happen to y-“
“Don’t blame yourself. It was a mistake on my part. If you weren’t there, I wouldn’t be here right now.” She feels his grip tighten around her as she brings her arms around his chest. Familiar feelings of the comfort of home encompass her as she breathes in his scent. The rhythmic rise and fall of his chest against her cheek would always be her refuge.
“Don’t think that I could ever forget you.” She raises her head to look up at him, the curve of her lips complementing the warmth in her eyes. Sasuke’s lips are soft as he presses them onto her forehead, imparting his relief and gratitude to her before pulling away.
“Me either,” he promises.

Naruto Shippuden, ep 397
Naruto and Sasuke are on the brink of death!!
Time for a filler :)
Jokes aside, I’m pretty interested in this one. It’s a topic that comes up often in fanfics: What would a different Chuunin Exam be like? Thoughts so far:
This takes place 2 years after part 1, so a few months before Naruto returns, I would guess, since Naruto leaves at age 13 and returns at 15. Less than 3 years pass in between.
Konohamaru and friends are still Academy students. This is a bit weird. Previously, the exam took place twice a year, in winter and in summer. We know Konoha winter has snow, so this can’t be winter, but the summer one takes place after that year’s Academy graduation. I suppose the simplest answer is that this specific exam is taking place at a non-standard time (early spring, to be before the graduation).
This is the first chunin exam since the interrupted invasion one. It’s implied that no one has been promoted to chunin since them, but I would generally ignore that. It seems deeply unlikely that villages wouldn’t promote internally, since the exam’s main purpose isn’t assessing promotion potential as such but rather political reasons.
Speaking of politics, invitations are sent to all five major villages, but everyone except Suna refuses. Generally, the idea seems to be that the exam is a great opportunity for scoping out information about the other villages, but Iwa, Kiri and Kumo see it as being advantages to Konoha and don’t want to play along.
An interesting participant is Fuu, the Nanabi junchuuriki. Apparently, her status as a jinchuuriki is a secret to outsiders. She is cautioned to make sure she doesn’t reveal it, and it sounds like she hasn’t been allowed outside the village much (if at all) to keep her hidden.
Taki is said to have produced many skilled jounin in the past, which was why it was entrusted with a bijuu. Eh, I have my doubts, but I can see them at the very least passing down this reasoning.
The leader of Taki is Shibuki. I think he’s from another filler? He’s cute! The subs translate his title as “Chief.” I can hear a “sato-**” in there. Just curious, since I always side-eye fics with “Uzukage,” Otokage,” etc.
I like how Shibuki casually sends along two jounin. This is practically sabotaging an allied village’s exam but lol. As an actual promotion method, the exam is a joke.
They confirm again that it’s 3 days hard run between Suna and Konoha, which again makes me wonder so hard about Sasuke and Orochimaru running over to Konoha and then back during the 4th war.
Danzou is under house arrest. Maybe since the Uchiha massacre? I can’t remember what prompted this.
The 1st round’s extra question is so ridiculous. For the canon version, it was fine because it was just testing their resolve. But Shikamaru and Temari set it up so that the ONLY correct answer is to put “no one” or leave it blank, since even if you all agree on who to drop, that person is actually excluded and the entire team fails. This is wild?? This is just Shikamaru projecting his personal moral stance onto the exam.
The other subplot going on is regarding Ame. It’s really weird because the timeline re: Hanzou doesn’t seem to be at all what I expected?
Tsunade and the rest of the world believe that Hanzou is still alive, which makes sense given that Pain (if not the rest of the village) is putting on an act of him being alive. However, Konan tells Pain that “Hanzou sent many genin to the exam last time,” last time being 2 years prior during the invasion. This doesn’t seem to be double speak where “““Hanzou””” is in heavy quotation marks and actually means “we did it” in third person. So Hanzou was still alive two years ago?!
Danzou noticed that something is off because Hanzou and him had kept in contact (even during his house arrest lol) but the letters stopped when the real Hanzou was killed. Not really notable, but good setting detail.

Three Months Waiting (Nobunaga Oda x Reader)
A/N: Started playing Ikemen Sengoku and am absolutely in love with Nobunaga.*sighs* I couldn't manage to get the premium story for his dramatic days gacha, but hopefully it's similar to what the story revealed from his POV.
I do not own Ikemen Sengoku or any of its characters.
My ko-fi: ko-fi.com/lordsister
Warning: Contains spoilers for Nobunaga's dramatic route!
You disappeared in the fog, his name resounding on a desperate scream, and just like that his heart shattered as easily as glass, violent, glittering shards piercing the most vulnerable areas of his soul. A few heartbeats passed after you vanished in which he couldn't believe that you were actually gone, that you were 500 years away from him now, far beyond his reach.
Nobunaga had believed your story about being from the future easily enough, but the fact that you had just been sucked back to your strange, modern world was jarring nonetheless.
It was just...he couldn't believe it. You couldn't just be gone. Except you were. So terribly, impossibly gone it tore a gaping wound deep within him, defying his understanding of the natural world and making it all too clear how special you had become to him.
It was more painful than any physical wound he had ever endured, too painful. One second you were right in front of him, reaching for him, crying for him, and the next you weren't, torn away from the man who loved you most by the cruel hand of fate. Sure, he'd been the one to push you into the wormhole, saving you from dying in this storm, but that didn't make it any less painful.
Grief and hurt welling inside of him, Nobunaga tipped his head back and cursed every god that ever was, roaring at the heavens even as lightning fell in deadly spears around him and rain pelted his tear-stained face. The world had never been quite fair with him and now to have the one person he loved so deeply ripped from his grasp? It was too much, even for him.
Despite knowing it wouldn't make any difference, he screamed your name, demanding you be returned to him. He received no answer accepting bone-rattling thunder.
For all his strength and ambition, Nobunaga barely had the will to drag himself out of that storm and not just lay down and let the lightning strike him or let the rain drown him in the mud. Now that he'd found you, he didn't want to live in a world without you and it would be so easy to give up.
In the end, it was his promise to prove that he loved you across 500 years that gave him the determination to escape the storm. If he was truly never to see you again than he had to prove how much he loved you, how every part of him would always belong to you, just as you had once belonged to him. In the last moments before you were lost to him all he'd been able to say was "I love you." Maybe he should've come up with something more flowery and elevated, but he had never been one for over-complicated language and at the time it was all he could think to say.
He certainly hadn't said it enough when you were with him, something he regretted to his core.
Nobunaga was prepared to face an eternity without you, an eternity devoid of love and true happiness, but the gods he cursed for taking you away from him were apparently more merciful than he had given them credit for.
When he returned to Azuchi, battered and heartbroken, he received news that made him actually feel hopeful for the first time in his life, if tentatively so.
Mitsunari was pacing outside the castle gates, a strange book in his hands and an anxious expression on his face. Even though he knew his vassal was probably awaiting his return, Nobunaga walked right past him as he went through the gates, his eyes forward and distant as the other man followed insistently at his heels.
"Lord Nobunaga! You've returned! I have something of the utmost urgency that I need to show you!"
"Not now, Mitsunari," he grumbled, his pace unrelenting as he headed towards his rooms in the tenshu. He just wanted to be alone with his grief for a few more moments before he was forced to begin his life without you. Just a little while longer...
"But, my lord-"
The Demon King spun around, a snarl on his lips as he ground out, "Not. Now."
Gentle face pinched in concern and utter seriousness, Mitsunari continued, undeterred, "It's about (y/n)!"
That made him stop. Why was even the sound of your name suddenly so precious to him? He recovered quickly, advancing suddenly on his vassal and making him take a few steps back.
"She's gone." The words tasted bitter on his tongue. "What news could you possibly have about her? Whatever it is, I suggest you say it quickly. I'm not in the most patient mood at the moment."
"A ninja, Sasuke I believe his name was, arrived a while ago and gave me this." Mitsunari held up the book in his hand. It had a strange, shiny surface for the cover and what appeared to be metal spirals going up the side. "It's full of calculations I've never seen before, but the fact of the matter is that (y/n) may be able to return to this time!"
Nobunaga was rendered speechless, made silent by the sudden wave of cautious relief that weakened his knees and left him breathless. You could...come back to him? Swallowing, he forced him to speak, question this possibility in case he got his hopes up only for them to be mercilessly dashed by fate once more. If there was even the slightest chance that you could return to him...
"What do you mean?"
"Well, it's still rather unclear to me, but before he left, Sasuke mentioned something about a wormhole. If he's right, another will appear in three months, connecting this time to 500 years in the future and-"
"Allowing her to come back."
"That's correct."
"I see." It was an odd feeling, feeling so lost one moment and so driven the next. But it all seemed too simple. "Was there anything else?"
"Yes. He said there was one thing that needed to be done to ensure she isn't forced back again." An uncertain look spread across Mitsunari's face and Nobunaga lifted a brow.
"And that would be?"
"History has to adhere to that of (y/n)'s timeline...for that, you have to die."
Humming, Nobunaga averted his gaze from Mitsunari. Really, he should've expected something like this, but he wasn't concerned either. He had no intention of dying, at least not truly, not when there was a possibility you would come back.
Thus, Nobunaga formed a plan to fake his death. His ambition to unite Japan still remained at the forefront of his mind, but if this was the only way to keep you here, then so be it. He couldn't bear having you taken away from him a second time.
In the end he only had to wait three months for you to return to him. Three months of hell as he tried to piece his broken heart back together with promises that you would return to him and crying himself to sleep without you in his arms, but only three months.
The first month saw an overabundance of planning.
Nobunaga threw himself into his work, making plans to fake his death and leave everything to Hideyoshi. He wasn't going to give up on his goal, not at all. He was just going to make it so he could reach that goal with you permanently by his side.
By the time everything was in place, Nobunaga was beyond exhausted, taking little time to rest. Part of this was because he kept checking the strange notes the ninja had given Mitsunari to make sure everything lined up, but the larger factor was that he just couldn't sleep without you. Despite knowing you were going to come back to him, he still missed you so much his heart ached.
He didn't forget his promise to you either. Before faking his death, Nobunaga wrote a formal letter to be saved for posterity and entrusted it to his vassals. Enclosed within the letter was your name, the name of the woman he loved so much, his goddess of mercy. He had no idea if it would reach you, 500 years in the future, but he hoped to the gods it would, that you would know he would always love you.
It was almost a relief when the act was finally employed and he was accepted as dead by the general public. Now all he had to do was wait.
The second month saw unbearable longing.
Waiting was easier said then done, but Nobunaga would have gladly waited for you forever if it meant he could hold you and kiss you one more time.
He finally managed to rest by imagining you in his arms, conjuring your figure from memories. It worked, your gentle eyes and loving smile there to guard him against the childhood trauma that still lingered deep in his psyche, but it made it all the worse to wake up and remember that you weren't there, red eyes staring at the empty space beside him on the futon where you should be.
It was in the second month that darker parts of his mind whispered that you weren't coming back, that you would choose a life of comfort in your world over a life at his side. He didn't doubt your love, not in the slightest, but the Sengoku period had done unfair things to him, things that made him unsure of the promise of happiness.
Nobunaga did his best to push his doubts away, looking at the night sky from the tenshu balcony and wondering what you were doing at that very moment, 500 years away. Were you making plans yourself? Saying goodbye to your old life?
It made him long for you even more.
The third month saw impatience.
He wanted you back and he wanted you back now.
Nobunaga truly believed that one day was far too long to go without holding you and he couldn't wait to make up for lost time, couldn't wait to have you in his arms once more and kiss those lovely lips of yours. In the private confines of his rooms, he would whisper his love against your skin as he relearned the curves and dips of your body, showing you he loved you through both words and actions as he made love to you again and again and again.
He kept a mental countdown of how much time remained until the wormhole opened again and he swore the days and nights had never been longer.
At long last the day arrived when he waited impatiently in front of the ruins of Honno-ji, carefully watching for something, anything that would signal your return to him. He stood waiting all day until night fell and the fear that you weren't coming back began to gnaw at the corners of his hope.
When the fog set in, the same one that had appeared when you'd been sucked away three months ago, Nobunaga didn't even realize it, but before he knew it he couldn't see three feet in front of him and he was surrounded in murky grey.
Heart beginning to race in his chest, he strained to see through the cloud, walking forward in slow steps. "(Y/n)!" Your name erupted from his lips unbidden, the word filled with power as if he was trying to summon you to him.
"Nobunaga Oda?" an unfamiliar voice asked, a male figure appearing through the fog.
Stiffening, he replied, "Yes. And who might you be?"
The fog began to clear, revealing a bespectacled, brown-haired man, but the Devil King paid very little mind to his features. All of his attention was solely fixed on the unconscious individual held in his arms. You. His (y/n).
"My name is Sasuke Sarutobi. I'm the one who gave Mitsunari Ishida those notes."
"So I've heard," Nobunaga muttered, his eyes still on you.
Without a word, Sasuke moved forward and Nobunaga opened his arms to receive you, cradling your head against his chest delicately, tenderly. He was faintly aware of the ninja's eyes on him, regarding him, but he didn't care, too wrapped up in the soft rise and fall of your chest and the warmth of your body against his. You really had come back to him.
"She passed out on the way through the wormhole but she should recover soon enough," Sasuke finally said.
Tearing his eyes away from you, Nobunaga finally met his gaze. "Good. Thank you. I'll take care of her from now on."
Sasuke smiled softly. "I trust that you will."
The fog had fully dispersed at this point, and with that Sasuke turned and strode off, leaving you to your Devil King. Returning his attention to you, Nobunaga's knees gave and he sank to the ground with you in his arms, hugging you close. Tears seeped down his cheeks as he pressed his lips to your forehead. After three months, he finally had you back and he would be damned if he ever let you go again.
"Thank you for coming back to me. I love you," he whispered into your hair and rose on relief-weakened legs once more, making his way towards the inn where he would wait for you to wake up and look at him with those beautiful eyes he couldn't live any longer without.

sakura haruno fics (ao3)
an old anon sent me on the quest of a lifetime when they first asked for sakura fic recs and my brain went “lets read every fic on ao3 in the sakura haruno tag” (also ff.net but thats gonna have to be another post in the far off future bc ff is an old giant)
fics are split into finished, in progress, and abandoned (and the fics with ⭐ are my top faves) plus every category’s fics will be in order from shortest to longest. im gonna include the original summaries along with my own separate take (really more of a reaction) and any warnings the fics need!
THIS IS A LABOR OF LOVE!!!!! which is a nice way of saying it’s long as shit, it took me forever, and i loved every second of it! let me know if any links dont work, theres typos that dont look purposeful, there’s warnings missing, if any fics arent in order, the formatting isnt right, etc.etc.
my sincerest apologies to mobile users
fair warning: im not exaggerating when i say it’s really long
(pic from naruto-manga-caps)
author’s note: im dumb and have adhd and though ive read most of these fics at least twice, i tend to skip over text. with this in mind PLEASE let me know if you come across anything in these fics that makes you uncomfy so i can either add a warning or remove it entirely
want to navigate faster? ctrl+f to search key words like: [ship], [author], bamf, mokuton, (team as) family, etc!
FINISHED
in the roots of the forest (i am birthed) by frostnesia
ship: none // words: 272 // chapters: 1/1
so little sakura walks; past the flowers, the vines, the bright red gates and enters to a sanctuary no one with a beating heart had stepped in for more than a hundred years.
au. little ficlet! OOF im always a little heart eyed about godly iconography. plotless! just a good short read that would absolutely rock my world if it was expanded into a multichapter story but it’s still good as is!
Seven or Two by grit
ship: sakura & kakashi // words: 623 // chapters: 1/1
He makes a split-second decision. Their teamwork was atrocious, but he knows who to blame, and it’s not the girl who blackmailed her teammates into giving a damn.
i really do need more fics where kakashi recognizes the similarities between himself and sakura. tbh i just need more fics where sakura gets the love and recognition she deserves. this is a good short fic for that! team seven doesnt make it through but sakura does! eventually! warning for one weird line abt the yamanakas that might make ppl uncomfy
Twelve and Sixteen by therebaeka
ship: none // words: 625 // chapters: 1/1
Twelve years old Sakura was weak. She was annoying. She cried over the littlest thing. She had no pain tolerance at all. She wanted to be strong. Sixteen years old Sakura was strong. She can split the earth. She can heal anything. She can take anything thrown at her. She wanted to be twelve again.
god i love fics that touch on all the negative effects a shinobi lifestyle has on ninja kids (like the loss of childhood innocence/wonderment). character growth and mostly a character analysis type fic which i love. sakura just loves her team but she misses being a kid (team as family!!)
Three Sentence Ficlets by Elizabeth Culmer (edenfalling)
ship: narusasusaku // words: 626 // chapters: 3/3

“look underneath the underneath,” except no one has ever really bothered to look at sakura and see her. and then there is a boy (isn’t there always). maybe they’re both just ghosts, making each other real.
no clear timeline. large focus on sakura and how she’s (not) seen by other people. emphasis on sai and sakura’s disconnect from naruto and sasuke. the plot confused me a bit but im pretty positive it’s about sakura dismantling root per request of tsunade. THE ENDING THOUGH??? sai deserves so much love that really made me melt a little

yeah!!! literal and metaphorical support!!! sakura is so good here i love her. shes just a kid and she wants to be able to support her teammates even if that means literally carrying them after they pass out from exhaustion. i super love how kuriquinn writes ss interactions and this fic is no different aa (also i cant believe he never gave her the spar she asked for :/) can be read as platonic if you want! it’s mostly onesided any way
Sakura of the Red Sands by Dovey
ship: gaasaku // words: 4811 // chapters: 1/1
Sasori hates Hatake Kakashi. He meets a young girl with reason to hate the man too, and finds the perfect opportunity for revenge.
If he accidentally builds a family along the way, well. He always was exemplary at exceeding expectations.
au. sasori never defected. set roughly around chunin exam arc. sasori is an asshole as per usual and accidently becomes sakura’s pseudo older brother figure? it’s actually super endearing how proud of her he becomes and how much he starts to root for her sjdndk though it is a Little unnerving here and there and there are parts where sasori is noticeably less normal than the average person. also MOKUTON SAKURA!!!!! she’s op and meets gaara and they click and this whole fic is maybe a little weird but mostly interesting (also the author notes are good please read them!!) warning for maybe questionable levels of attachment? oh also a kind of coerced amputation!
⭐Into the Water by BasicallyAnIdiot
ship: none // words: 5192 // chapters: 1/1
Sakura had always loved the water.
set throughout timeline. i’ve said it before and i’ll say it again but i love when people write sakura as someone who leans more towards her water aspect and this is one of my favorite fics that show that. my girl is connected directly to tobirama nd while he’s actually a bastard, this fic single handedly made me have a reluctant soft spot for him. plus she follows directly in his footsteps and invents jutsus too (god i love her shes so smart and cool) plenty of little spots about love that make me tender. god i love this fic so much and my girl kicks ass 100/10

1. The moment of realisation. The moment she realises Sasuke’s left the village, gone off to do who knows what with Orochimaru-
2. Her memory returns to her - she was useless against her teammate; taken down by a pressure point and unable to do anything to prevent him from getting at it.
3. Inner rages, throws herself around, cursing and screaming until finally, finally she calms and she says Uchiha Sasuke is a traitor.)
In which Sakura gets the character development she deserved.

Haruno Sakura is nothing and nobody, but she breathes and grows and thrives and the forest thrives with her.

Haruno Sakura may seem like she is destined for being a paper ninja, that her choice in this career was a flight of fancy or all based on a fangirl crush. The pink haired girl had no delusions about the life she had chosen, but she would rather die as a ninja then to be bled dry as a slave to her family. Lies and deceptions have built the world around her and Sakura is ready to tear it down, grabbing freedom with both hands.
au. starts off when team 7 first tries to get the bells. sakura’s entire family and backstory is altered and abusive. budding team as family and maybe even actual family between naruto and sakura? *winkwink* some implications of a heavy plot but it doesnt go anywhere and there’s no plans to continue it! warnings for abuse, child experimentation, and mentions of blood

In which Sakura is held captive and learns what a genjutsu specialist can do to a person's mind, that sharks can actually make great friends, joins a dying clan, and gets regifted multiple times before she's finally strong enough to fight back.
starts off when theyre genin. itachi is unhinged and sakura gets the short end of the stick :( LOTS of trauma. my girl gets really messed up and learns a lot of things purely to survive and has a loose grasp on reality. kisame isnt a good guy (read the notes at the end of chapter 10!) but he gives her sharks which is cool. kabuto is bad and so is orochimaru and kimimaro makes me sad but thats all par for the course. sakura gets some sick water things and also tsunade gets to be there and sakura makes her own family. warnings for torture, gore, dissociation, general loss of reality, blood, and death

In one world, Kakashi awoke, felt grieved at being assigned a team he sees his own in, and he let that grief make him a lazy teacher. He saw himself in Sasuke, Obito in Naruto, and Rin in Sakura. He woke, saw himself in them, and took a large step back, regretting accepting them as his new team. In another world he was quite hands off, merely a watcher because it was so very painful to watch. He saw himself and all his mistakes in this new team of his.
In this world, Kakashi awoke, saw the similarities, and instantly panicked. He suddenly realized what he had done, passing a team. Kakashi was left scrambling not to repeat old mistakes and regrets. This team would not suffer the fate of his team.
In this world, simply put, Kakashi became a teacher. This is the starting of a new Team seven.

Naruto and Sasuke left Sakura pathetically broken, but like any good shinobi she put the pieces back together the only way she knew how: relentless training. Years later Konoha is in the midst of a war and Sakura is a force to be reckoned with. Frankly, she's not even sure if she wants her teammates back.
au. starts during the early parts of tsunades training (with a timeskip) sakura has a lot of feelings of abandonment and im proud of how much shes achieved! shes in anbu and a diplomat (theres a war going on) and she stands on her own two feet! shes got a weird relationship w morality and starts questioning the way things are run.. also she holds a lot of resentment towards naruto and sasuke but it gets worked on throughout (and they become a team again!!!) im not a fan of how they treated her like shes something to be protected however briefly. sakura needs a mental health lifetime but god damn if she isnt smart and OOF the poetic cinema of it all,, warning for blood, death, and major character death

set post war. okay listen. barring morally repulsive ships (kksk, itsk, mdsk, etc.) any sakura ship makes me happy if it’s healthy and loving even if i dont like the ship (like i dont care abt shikasaku and canon ss is SO bad i still cant believe it happened) THAT BEING SAID. this fic is cute and sasuke cares a lot and op wrote him so emotive and i love the little family he became a part of on his trips and sakura is a lovestruck fool (which still has me gritting my teeth bc it doesnt idk. Fit with the rest of her personality) but it’s cute if second hand embarrassing,, honestly this fic is so ooey gooey and full of cheesy love and it’s damn near too much (how many times can a person blush.. like fr..) and theres annoying bits of needless drama and lack of communication but im stubbornly holding onto this fic bc i LOVE the character study type route this fic takes/// (this fic is like. really dramatic.. thats a warning in and of itself and i mean like telenovela type dramatic emotion and subtext. not plot twisty dramatic) warning for violence, mentions of blood, and nsfw

Able to only hope her attempts to raise attention aren’t in vain, she sets off across the sands towards the west, intent to follow the sun.
not super positive where in the timeline this is (or if it’s an au) but if i had to hazard a guess id say between sakura being taken on as an apprentice and before sasuke leaves. starts off w sakura by herself traversing through a desert with the clothes on her back. she suffers before she gains but at least it’s not for long (Well..) also can i say that i LOVE worldbuilding and i LOVE how different aspects of suna were protrayed here. like the scouting and political things (sakura being the hokages apprentice and how shed be treated in other villages) and temari in general? ugh! theres focus on gaara and how he’s coping with his demon too plus he’s just kinda cute in this fic. warning for violence, the general bad things that happen while unprepared in a desert, and the q slur except it’s not used in regard to gay ppl in any way. nothing is romantic so it can be taken as friendship if it’s what you’d prefer!

The Wave arc, except Sakura’s flimsy attempt at protecting the client results in her accidentally faking her death. Zabuza survives and takes her along with him as an apprentice, and she grows up in the harder but more emotional life of a nin on the run.
aka I have a lot ideas of how Missing-Nin would have a different culture than the rest of Naruto-verse, that would place a high-value on youngins’ in the trade given the rarity, and Sakura gets a lot of teachers over the years for the price of lots of emotional trauma & loss.
also, she gets a big fuck-off sword.
starts off during wave arc. ZABUZA I LOVE YOU. he takes sakura in because he’s a lonely missing nin who got used to caring for another person. sakura isnt as against the idea of staying with zabuza as she tries to pretend to be. also, GOD the reactions of the rest of the konoha twelve really really break me?? sasuke spirals faster and naruto gets essentially adopted by sakura’s parents? and kakashi gets fiercely protective. warning for death, animal death, and kinda graphic murder? also theres no actual ship even a little implied so far

Sasuke had never known Senju Hashirama in person, of course. But he had grown up hearing stories about the First Hokage at his mother’s knee—about the legend who had defeated the most powerful member of their own clan. Enough stories to recognise what he was seeing—and to know he was witnessing his teammate perform the impossible.
Or, in the fight against Gaara during Suna’s attempted invasion of Konoha, the Ichibi’s attempt to kill Sakura awakens an unexpected power. It changes the destiny of Team Seven forever.

Sakura isn’t the kind of person to survive past Genin. She wears pink, fights over boys, and can’t throw a Kunai to save her life. Which is why no one expects her to live very long. To Sakura, graduating from the academy is like a reality check. Being a shinobi is nothing close to how civilian romance novels make it seem. Sakura has always been terrible at stopping when she should. So she changes pink to grey, forces herself to ignore Sasuke, and learns how to shatter bones with a single punch. Screw surviving. Sakura knows she’s going to die, but she’ll go down fighting.

Sakura doesn’t like to talk about her family. Most people assume it’s because she’s a nice young girl, and she doesn’t want to make everyone else feel bad, considering she’s on a team of orphans.
It has more to do with the fact that she killed her parents in self-defense and is desperately trying to cover up the murders, than any sympathy for her teammates- but she’s happy to let you assume what you want.
did that summary give you whiplash? because it absolutely made me collapse. set just before the bell test. also starts off pretty fucking strong. shes a traumatized kid trying to compartmentalize on her own while trying to make sure no one finds out about what she did. also she’s really smart in the way she’s dealing with the aftermath. really interesting (at least to me) is how despite her parents no longer having a direct hold on her life, she still abides by their rules. warning for (past) child abuse, murder, and occassionaly descriptive gore. godd i really want more (there’s narusaku and some sakura/oc but i dont think theyre permanent? the narusaku definitely isnt bc it was mostly an accident but im not sure abt the sakura/oc)

Team seven bonds in new weird ways, The Uchiha are actually all dead except for Sasuke (including war-hero itachi) who's got a chip on his shoulder the size of Konoha, Naruto isn't the kyuubi container and he finds Sakura kinda scary. Sakura would just like to have a hobby.

After the disasterous mission in Wave, Sakura returns to Konoha with a new drive: she wants to truly earn her spot on Team 7, and be able to protect her teammates. Unfortunately, nobody else seems to be willing to support her new goal, so she resorts to teaching herself: she decides her team needs a medic, and since she doesn’t have the connections or record to earn a place at the hospital, she practices on herself.
AKA the fic where sakura gets to be as dumb and have as little regard for her personal wellbeing as every other Naruto character, & teaches herself how to heal by inflicting & then fixing her own injuries. This deals both with some major changes to the plotline given her new skills, and the overall team dynamic.

She severs their ties, decidingly, not because of Sasuke. Well. Not for the reason Ino suspects (but Sakura never clarifies, and that is lying by omission. isn't it?)
~~~
Sakura Haruno can’t help but feel. Not only her emotions but other peoples emotions. She is always prone to crying and for good reason— she can’t shut others emotions and must deal with her own and those closest to her (relationship wise.) Because a painfully tragic incident involving her father’s murder Sakura can no longer handle her “gift” and does the only thing that will stop her suffering.
She commits social suicide, and lets her best friend think she ended their friendship over a boy. This is her story....
au. set when sakura starts her rivalry w ino. sakura can sense emotions??? warning for death mention in first chapter and wow okay thats a lot. sasuke is traumatized and it takes out sakura and oof! this story is so so interesting,, shes stumbling her way through figuring out how her small clan’s blood line(?) works (how it’s more of a hassle than anything) also it gives her a really good disposition to genjutsu which she tries to get better in (she also had an earth affinity plus all of team 7 have a petty rivalry going on) sakura has trauma and goes hard in the exams. warnings for blood, gore, disembowelment, dismemberment, animal and human abuse/death, the rivalry between t7 is baaaaadd,, also disorienting plot twist in chapter 16!
Or, Sakura goes to the Uchiha compound the night of the massacre and comes away an orphan with more questions than answers.
There's been a storm brewing inside Sakura ever since Sasuke left to seek out Orochimaru, and the growing realization that she might not be half the shinobi her teammates are. She's always been the one that held back and let the boys finish the job, but it's clear she can't let herself be the weak one any longer. It's time to take her fate into her own hands...and it starts with breaking into a library.
set post sasuke rescue mission. i LOVE the introspection and worldbuilding im such a sucker for it// she gets to make rash and stupid decisions while still flexin her smarts and i am HERE for it!! she questions the state and adds skills to her arsenal (which is. tiny for a long time) shes smart and quick thinking but rash and impulsive so of course leaving the village and convincing ppl she went after sasuke is what she settles on (smh. her heart and heads in the right place bust smh) GAARA BBY I LOVE YOU SO VER MUCH (shukaku.....) Several things happen all at once in less than a minute’s time.
Sakura’s elbow slams into Sasuke’s side from an angle he doesn’t anticipate, sending him tumbling end over end off the branch.
Sasuke rights himself just a second too late and without checking where he’s going to land– When he does his knee twists, he feels a lightning bolt of pain shoot from his sole to his head, his leg gives out.
And Orochimaru’s teeth sink down to the gum in Sakura’s shoulder.
starts during chunin exams. timeline is followed pretty closely. fic is mostly centered around sasuke and from his perspective but sakura has the most pivotal change (:(). sasuke is cute, sakura is so in over her head, and naruto is naruto. sasuke loves his team a lot :(( and GOD i love when the kids act like kids even though that reminder hurts. sasuke takes up healing!! how cool is that!! The Other Man’s Princess
Ikesen fanfiction by impracticaldemon ~ for acrispyapple, with thanks and best wishes, and for Vespe, Yuuki, and all my other Kenshin-fan friends!
Words: 5800 [Note: about Kenshin, based on an incident in Masamune’s route]
Coming soon to AO3 and FFnet [but tumblr isn’t kind to links]
Summary: Kenshin chooses not to kill Date Masamune when the enemy warlord is saved from imminent disaster by the unexpected arrival of the rumoured Oda princess. The princess’ willingness to protect Date at all costs--and the fact that his enemy is obviously fighting injured--ruins the whole thing. But what if somebody else wants to save Kenshin?
~~~~~
The Other Man’s Princess
Anna had known it would be a difficult battle. She might not have the years of experience of the men and women around her, but she was observant, and it hadn’t taken her long to learn to read the signs. At first, she’d only been able to gauge a situation by looking at the local inhabitants as a whole: were the men cocky, serious, or grim? were the women resigned, tight-lipped, or overtly anxious? After almost a year in the Sengoku—and a hard, dangerous year it had been, until recently—she was much better at understanding the nuances of war, and she noticed more subtle tells, such as increases in the price of food, and fewer merchants in the marketplace.
Sasuke arrived back at the castle first, as he usually did, to bring news to the reserve commander, Kurata, and to her. She’d noticed he was troubled almost immediately, even though his first message was that Kenshin was safe, and that the troops were withdrawing in good order. Apparently, the Oda had been able to bring up their reinforcements faster than expected, which meant abandoning the conflict for another day, when the Uesugi-Takeda forces had grown stronger.
“It was pretty bad out there,” Sasuke told her confidentially, once he’d given his formal report. “I’m glad Yukimura decided to retreat. Lord Kenshin was—well, he was as unstoppable as ever—but the joint Date-Tokugawa cavalry had already targeted him once, and they would have gone after him again once the rest of the Oda forces arrived.” His gaze became unfocussed for a moment, and he sighed. “I would never say this to my employer—or to Yukimura—but it was pretty amazing seeing Tokugawa Ieyasu and Toyotomi Hideyoshi on the battlefield together, near the height of their powers.”
Normally, Anna would have smiled knowingly at his absurd-but-genuine adoration of the Sengoku superstars, but she could tell that he was worried about Kenshin, and that made her impatient. She waved a hand in front of Sasuke’s face.
“Hey—ninja boy!” She raised both eyebrows, and gave him a very direct, ‘stop-stalling’ look. “I know you have to get back there—you always do—so you might as well tell me what you didn’t tell Lord Kurata.”
His eyes slid sideways for a moment, as they usually did when he was thinking, or embarrassed, or both, but they returned shortly to meet hers. Sasuke’s expression rarely changed much, but she’d learned to tell the difference between excited-stoic and worried-stoic. This was definitely the latter.
“At some point during the battle, Lord Kenshin took off on his own, as he does, and he and Date Masamune ended up in a one-on-one duel—which is actually very rare, despite what you see in movies and stage plays.” He paused, caught Anna’s expression, and hurried on. “Anyway, I missed what led up to it, but I was in time to see the conclusion.”
“You were hurrying to Kenshin’s side to protect him, of course. I’m sure it wasn’t just an opportunity to see two of the great swordsmen of the era in personal combat.” Mentally, she face-palmed—hadn’t she just told Sasuke to skip the fanboy stuff? It had to be nerves.
“…There may have been an element of extreme personal excitement—after all, Uesugi Kenshin and Date Masamune never met like that in our timeline.”
“Sure—go on.”
“Just as I was approaching, Lord Kenshin disarmed Lord Masamune, who appeared to be injured. It looked like Lord Kenshin was going to kill Lord Masamune, but then an Oda soldier suddenly jumped out of the grass waving a rifle, and distracted Lord Kenshin by yelling at him to stop. As you probably know, Lord Kenshin isn’t easy to distract when he’s fighting—or not for very long. But this time he stopped cold, because the voice was clearly a woman’s.”
“A woman? Nobody ever lets me go off to Kenshin’s battles—not that I want to be in them.”
They exchanged a look. Sasuke shrugged semi-apologetically; Anna shrugged in acceptance. Kenshin would never want her anywhere near such a battle, and she knew enough, after two months of getting closer to him, not to push him too far when it came to her safety. He was a wonderful, caring, fascinating—devastatingly beautiful—man, but he had wounds that she was still figuring out how to heal. Patience and steadfastness were what he needed, and once she’d decided he was worth it—very early on, in fact—she’d thrown herself into the joy and the trials of being there for him.
~~~
She’d originally met Kenshin in a town about a day’s ride from Kasugayama. He’d rescued her from two brutish ronin who were intent on dragging her off as punishment for standing up to them on behalf of an elderly shopkeeper. Kenshin had refused her thanks, but although he’d seemed cold—even rude—there’d been a quality about him, beyond his obvious beauty, that had drawn her in. When he’d saved her from the same two men just a few days later, he’d criticized her survival skills, but he’d calmly walked her home, and he’d slowed his pace to hers. More than that, he’d told her to be herself with the people around her, something she’d somehow forgotten how to do since being dumped into the Sengoku three months before. It had been exactly the advice she’d needed, and she’d been grateful.
Not long after, she’d met Sasuke, who’d been shocked to discover another “future person” so close by. He’d offered to bring her to Kasugayama, where it was safer and more comfortable, and she’d had little reason to refuse, and at least one good reason to accept. In fact, she hadn’t been altogether surprised to discover that Kenshin had arranged for Sasuke to check up on her in the first place. Moreover, Kenshin hadn’t seemed to mind Sasuke’s seemingly abrupt decision to bring her to the castle, despite his reputation as a woman-hater. She and Kenshin had spoken often since then, although Kenshin always came up with specific reasons for seeking her out, much to the amusement of his ally Takeda Shingen.
~~~
“…Yes, it was definitely a woman, based on the voice and hair. She was pretty well disguised by her armour, but”—Sasuke stopped and held out a hand, as if to say, I’m so sorry, please don’t kill me—“she was awfully short for a samurai.”
He looked at her hopefully. It took her a long moment to catch the reference, but then she groaned.
“Star Wars, Sasuke? Really? And that’s a really obscure reference. You’re lucky my undergrad was science, honestly.”
“The original Star Wars movies are a key part of geek culture, sorry. I guess she kind of reminded me of Princess Leia. Though I suppose a Lord of the Rings reference would be more appropriate—you know, ‘I am no man!’ and all that.”
“Sasuke—”
“Lord Kenshin just stared at the woman, totally ignoring Date Masamune. But she—well, she tried to shoot him.”
“But—you said he was fine! Or did she miss? I’m impressed she could shoot one of those old matchlocks, actually.” And I am not feeling competitive. At all.
“Lord Masamune rushed in and somehow managed to deflect the shot—actually knocked the barrel of the rifle up. He’s fast.”
“I don’t understand. Why would he protect his enemy? Was it some kind of dumb chauvinist thing? You know—'can’t let a woman kill my enemy for me’?”
Sasuke gave her an odd look. “Well…” he said slowly, as though feeling out his words, “you know how I said there’s a person like us living in Azuchi?”
“Yes… You mean it was her?! And she tried to protect Date Masamune by shooting Kenshin?!”
Sasuke looked as unemotional as usual, but she was pretty sure it was a façade.
“It was an interesting event from a time-travel, or alternate universe, perspective. A person who shouldn’t be there tries to kill a man who should already be dead—er, sorry if that was tactless.” Sasuke blinked apologetically, but added, “And she does it for the sake of a man who died five hundred years before she was born. You can imagine how I felt.”
“No. No, I really don’t think I can. What happened next?”
“I think Lord Kenshin was… very disturbed… by the fact that there was a woman there in front of him, clearly prepared to kill, and also, well…”
“Prepared to die?”
“Yes.”
All at once, Anna could imagine how the strange scenario must have affected Kenshin, and it suddenly became far more important to see him—to reassure him—than to hear all the details. Especially with Sasuke’s unique editorial commentary. No matter how bizarre it was that another time-traveller had tried to kill the man Anna loved, during a battle that had never taken place in Anna’s—or the other woman’s—own history, the important thing was that Kenshin was probably hurting.
“Okay, just give me the gist of the rest, Sasuke.”
“Lord Masamune said he was ready to keep fighting, but Lord Kenshin put his sword away and walked off. He said the fight wasn’t fun anymore, so he was letting them go. I didn’t want to make things more tense, so I didn’t intrude. Not that I left him alone, of course. I made sure somebody brought him a horse. But… he had that smile.”
“So Kenshin’s on his way home right now?”
“Yes. This all happened yesterday. I left mid-afternoon to report back here. I thought… I thought you might want to know about it ahead of time.”
“Yes, good—thank you, Sasuke.” It came out sounding abrupt, so she tried again. “I mean it: thank you. You’re a good friend, and an amazing ninja.”
“Yeah, that’s me. Your friendly neighbourhood spider-ninja.”
The words sounded oddly lonely, instead of cheerful, but she let it go. She had reviewed her options, and made her decision. “I’m going with you, Sasuke. Don’t bother to argue.”
“…He’s not hurt, Anna. I promise, if he needed medical help, I’d have told you.” Anna had medical training, and had been working hard to learn Sengoku-era medicine—although it consisted mostly of inefficient herb-lore, last-ditch surgery, and opium, from what she could see. At least Japanese doctors believed in cleanliness, unlike their European counterparts of the same century. And to be fair, a good doctor could diagnose and treat wounds, and set bones, and alleviate the effects of certain illnesses.
“I think he is hurt, and I think you know it.” She fixed him with what she hoped was a compelling stare. “Now wait for me right here—or better yet, find me a good horse. It will take me less than ten minutes to change and grab my bag. Got it?”
~~~
“You shouldn’t be here.” Kenshin’s voice was flat, and Anna winced a little at his tone.
She’d known—based on Sasuke’s story—that he’d probably be struggling, emotionally, but it was hard not to react when it felt as though he’d suddenly decided to ignore how close they’d become over many weeks of conversations, quiet evenings out on the engawa, and even occasional disagreements. He refused to admit it, but he was extremely protective, and they’d had to sort out some framework they could both live with, where he knew she was safe, and she didn’t feel stifled. That was a work in progress, obviously.
“I was worried about you,” she told him, letting her sincerity speak for itself. “I wanted to be beside you, so that I could see for myself that you weren’t hurt.”
“Why didn’t you stay where you were safe? I’ve told you how dangerous it is to travel right now. You should have listened to me.”
She could tell he couldn’t hear her—not properly—and instead of frustrating her, that settled her resolve to be patient and gentle. Once she’d set aside her hurt at her chilly reception, she’d seen the expression—the fractured look—that hovered behind Kenshin’s cool stare and irritated, dismissive words.
“As I told you, Sasuke was with me the whole time, Kenshin-sama. And I am always safest with you, wherever that is.”
Kenshin’s beautiful, mismatched eyes narrowed slightly, but they stopped moving restlessly around the room, and focussed on her face. That was better.
“I—that’s not the point. You should have waited for me.”
“I’m sorry I couldn’t wait. I wanted to see you. You’re important to me.” Anna stretched out a hand to him, and Kenshin automatically took it, then looked almost comically surprised by his action.
They were kneeling facing each other in Kenshin’s tent. Anna had dissuaded Sasuke from going in with her when they’d arrived, regardless of military protocol, and in spite of Sasuke’s evident determination to bear the brunt of Kenshin’s wrath. After a certain amount of argument, Sasuke had admitted that it would be pleasant not to face a sword at his throat the moment Kenshin took in Anna’s presence. Consequently, she and Kenshin were alone, which was for the best. Alone in the immediate sense, at least—there were thousands of soldiers in the camp around them.
Kenshin cleared his throat. She knew that he wanted to keep making his points about her safety, and about following orders, but he felt constrained by their joined hands, and by the comfort he took from her touch—something that he’d told her once, after enough sake to poison the ordinary man.
“…I suppose you’re here now. And at least you came straight to me, and are unharmed.” His gaze softened a little, but Anna didn’t relax her guard. He was no longer cold, or frowning, but his smile remained disquieting. “You know… If I can’t be sure that you’ll stay in the castle while I’m away, I may need to take better precautions to keep you safe.”
“I already feel safe,” Anna said immediately, working hard to keep her tone light, but firm.
“You aren’t always careful enough, Anna.” Kenshin suddenly extended his free hand to caress her cheek and jaw, catching her off-guard. Although he had once rested his head on her lap, and they often held hands lately—by strictly unspoken accord—this touch was new, and more deliberately intimate. It was also undeniably possessive.
“I appreciate your concern, Kenshin-sama,” Anna responded, as calmly as she could. She did her best to focus on the tricky situation with Kenshin’s emotions, rather than the rush of warmth that flowed outward from his hand. “However—”
“I sometimes wonder if I should lock you in your quarters, for your own protection. You can be reckless.” Both tone and expression were bright and brittle.
Anna managed not to react to the threatening words; she’d known that it was a risk to come out to meet him. Instead of pulling away, she resolutely set aside her fear of being locked up in favour of conveying how much she appreciated his touch. She covered Kenshin’s hand on her cheek with her own, and turned her face further into his palm.
“I know that it’s important for me to be careful,” she told him, “most of all when I’m not with you.”
Kenshin’s eyes narrowed, but after a moment of surprise—it obviously wasn’t the reaction he’d expected—sharpness gave way to interest, and a hint of amusement. His fingers on her face gentled and then stilled.
“Are you trying to persuade me that your journey here was undertaken with safety in mind? Because you are safer with me?” He stroked her cheekbone with the pad of his thumb, and she wished she could just relax and enjoy being—somehow—important to this very special man.
“I wouldn’t go that far…”
“No?” Kenshin leaned forward, so that their faces were almost touching. The humour had vanished from his two-coloured gaze. “That’s good… But you won’t promise to stay put. And a woman doesn’t belong on the battlefield.” His grip on her hand and face tightened again. “How can I make you understand?”
“I understand, Kenshin-sama.” She might not appreciate—or agree with—his declaration, but she also knew better than to take it at face value. Kenshin was trying to use a simple, obvious (to him) statement to express a complex fear. “I know you don’t want me to go onto a battlefield, and I agree that it would be too risky.” For now, anyway, she added silently to herself. Sometimes it was hard to wait patiently, not knowing how things were going, wondering if she could be helpful.
“You say you understand, but—”
Anna could almost see the struggle going on behind his ice-sculpture features. He knew, rationally, that she hadn’t been the woman on the battlefield when he was fighting Lord Masamune. But the sight of a woman in mortal danger had clearly opened old wounds. It made her sad to see him so obviously afraid, even when he expressed it as concern for her safety. He was fearless by nature, and immensely strong, but that just made it worse for him.
“I have never ventured onto a battlefield,” she assured him. More slowly, she added: “And—I won’t. Not unless you agree to it first.” She’d given it a lot of thought during the ride to the camp. It had been a struggle from the beginning to balance her modern views on freedom with the realities of life in feudal Japan. But she’d decided this was a choice she could give up, for Kenshin’s sake.
“Well, I don’t agree to it. And I won’t.” Kenshin’s words were forceful. She would have been irritated, if she didn’t understand him as well as she did now. “It would be foolish and pointless. I won’t allow you to put yourself in such danger.”
“I will accept your decision.”
“You have to.” He was torn between asserting his authority—the man was akin to a divine prince to his clan, after all—and seeking reassurance. Not that he was one to invoke his rank, or power, explicitly. It was just part of who he was. Anna sometimes challenged that assumption of authority, as it applied to her, but she understood it.
“I mean it, Kenshin-sama. I will not follow you onto a battlefield without your knowledge and agreement.” She couldn’t quite bring herself to say permission. “You don’t have to force me to obey you. This is important to you, so I’ll let you decide.”
“Anna…”
“Yes?”
He remained silent, unable, or unwilling, to voice his thoughts. After a time, he seemed to reach a decision that satisfied him, and he smiled.
“I will take you home.”
“You’ll take me back to Kasugayama? I mean—now?” It was getting late; the sun had disappeared over an hour ago.
“It will be fine. I know the road well, and I can be back here well before dawn.”
“But…” This time it was Anna who was at a loss for words.
Kenshin withdrew his hands, although he paused to stroke her hair in a reassuring manner. Anna felt her heart thump almost painfully in her chest, and for just a moment she forgot how to breathe. Which was ridiculous! He affected her like this, more and more as time went on, but she could never decide what part of the attraction was his physical beauty, and what part was everything else—his integrity, his (constantly denied) kindness, his strange combination of strength and fragility. Or maybe she’d been truly lost when she’d come to believe that he needed her?
“We’ll just take one horse, to avoid being separated, or attacked.” The brisk, almost enthusiastic, statement brought her sharply back to earth.
“But, why do we have to go at all? You must be tired…” Not that he ever seemed tired after even the most gruelling battles. This time, though, she saw traces of strain.
“We’re not far from the castle, by horse. It’s much slower for the infantry, of course.” Kenshin regarded her intently, frowning a little. “Or are you tired after riding here? You can rest, and have tea, while I hear Sasuke’s report.” His expression changed when he mentioned Sasuke, and Anna suspected there would be swords involved. ‘To be expected,’ Sasuke had told her.
“Kenshin-sama. Isn’t there room for me in the camp? I thought it would be pleasant for you—for us—to see each other, even if you didn’t have much time to spare.”
Of course, she didn’t say that she had needed to make sure for herself that he was coping all right with his strange encounter with The Other Woman—the other time-traveller—who isn’t The Other Woman in any way, why did I even think that? Ugh! It was annoying to realize that there had been a twinge of jealousy in her sentiments toward a woman who might even be a friend, if they could ever meet. Or maybe I’m just worried that it isn’t me who’s special, and any woman from the future would be new and interesting?
“It’s better to return to the castle.” Now his tone was flat, and that caught her immediate attention. “I”—uncharacteristically, he seemed to change what he was going to say—“appreciate your effort in coming here.” Even though they weren’t touching, she could sense tension return to his body as fairness warred with instinct. “It wasn’t wise of you, but you were anxious. Women are emotional.”
As if you aren’t! Amazingly, she managed to keep that to herself. It was worth being patient if she could help. Kenshin had come to terms with her arrival relatively quickly, had even seemed reassured to have her near—for a short while. But now he wanted her back in the castle, and it might be more sensible to give in. Hopefully, he wasn’t serious about locking her up.
“If we’re going to go back, then I’d rather leave sooner than later.” Certain parts of her body wanted to protest the whole idea of getting back into the saddle, but she was starting to catch Kenshin’s restlessness. Or maybe they both wanted to be away from others for a while?
Kenshin nodded, relaxing, but he scrutinized her closely before rising to leave the tent. When Anna moved to follow him, he waved her back.
“You might as well rest a little. I have to talk to Sasuke either way, and it may take me some time to get away.”
“But I thought—”
“I won’t go far”—Anna was quite sure he wouldn’t—“so don’t worry. Get some rest.”
He spoke brusquely, and left the tent without looking back, but Anna was only briefly discomposed. She guessed that Kenshin had noticed her fatigue from the earlier ride, and was giving her an excuse to recover before starting back. Of course, he’d made it impossible to refuse.
~
They left an hour later. Sasuke saw them off, his face even more unreadable than usual in the gloom. He appeared to be uninjured. The moon was still low in the late summer sky, but approaching full; its light dimly illuminated the path they’d be taking through a rippling series of hills and valleys. There wasn’t much flat land in Japan, once you were away from the sea.
Kenshin had insisted that Anna ride with him for safety’s sake, but she hadn’t needed convincing. The rest had helped, but while Kenshin knew every part of this route, and rode as easily as he walked, she had no such knowledge, or skill. Privately, she thought that the danger of falling off her horse, or guiding it into a hole, far exceeded the chance of being attacked. She couldn’t imagine any bandits stupid enough to prey on the roads this close to Kasugayama. Besides, she’d come to be with Kenshin, so why wouldn’t she ride with him?
“Are you comfortable?”
“Yes, thank you, Kenshin-sama.”
It wasn’t quite true, since she’d become unexpectedly self-conscious from the moment he’d lifted her into the saddle and seated himself behind her. His arms were warm around hers, and it was impossible not to be fully aware of his—taut, lean, muscled—body against her back. They both wore thin summer clothing, and despite Anna’s light haori, worn in deference to the damp night air, she felt as though they were practically skin-to-skin. She was glad she was facing mostly away from Kenshin.
“Do you always ride so stiffly? No wonder you were tired. Didn’t Sasuke teach you to ride?”
“Oh! No… I mean, yes, maybe that was it.”
Kenshin shifted, transferring the reins to one hand, and tightening his other arm around her. She tensed, and then gave up and settled back against his chest. How could she resist? She wondered if her heart-beat was as loud to Kenshin as it seemed to her. Probably not. Right?
“Are you sure you’re all right? You seem alarmed. There’s nothing to fear while you’re with me, and we have no need for haste, so I won’t push the horse.”
Or maybe he had super-human powers of observation, when he wasn’t focussed on other things. Looking down, she realized that his hand was wrapped carefully around hers, and his thumb was pressed to her racing pulse. Of course. So he had noticed her pounding heart-rate. While riding a battle-trained horse through the near-dark on a winding, hilly trail.
“I’m not alarmed. I’m not afraid of being attacked, I’m not afraid of falling off, and I’m not afraid that you’ll go too fast. You pretend it’s not true, but you are very considerate of me.”
He was loosening up as he rode, she could tell. She, on the other hand, was struggling to keep her cool. Kenshin’s voice carried warm breath past her ear as they rode, and it was yet another distraction to add to all the other pleasant-but-possibly-inappropriate distractions happening right now. She wondered, again, what he really thought of her.
“Is it considerate to make you ride through the night with me after you have just endured the same ride in the opposite direction?”
“Mm, okay, I’m not sure on that one, but if you’ll tell me why, then I can answer your question.”
“You can be very stubborn.”
“So can you.”
“…I’ve heard that before. I wish you wouldn’t quote Shingen at me. It’s annoying.”
He was ‘annoyed’ enough to tighten his grip on her, but it felt a lot more like a hug than anything bad. Anna realized that she’d be very okay with hugging him back, if they weren’t on horseback, on a difficult trail, in the middle of the night. Inadvertently, she sighed.
“What is it, Anna?”
“Nothing.”
“Ah.” His breath tickled her ear again, and then—and then—he softly kissed her temple.
“Kenshin!” Did she really squeak like a fangirl just there? Yes, yes, she did. Damn.
“Sasuke told you about the woman—Date’s woman—didn’t he?”
“Um—yes?” Context? Hello? Did you just move from kissing me to asking whether I knew about the other woman—no, the other time-traveller who just happened to be a woman? She was curious, irritated, and a little ‘glowy’ all at once.
“And that’s why you came to see me?”
“Yes… I suppose that’s true. I was worried.”
“There was no need to worry about me. Sasuke sometimes—frequently—oversteps his bounds.”
“I worry about you, Kenshin-sama. I care about what happens to you, and I think about what you’re doing. I wonder if you are all right.”
“I didn’t want you anywhere near the battlefield. Or in an armed camp full of men. Sasuke shouldn’t have brought you here.”
Okay, now what?
“Is that the answer to why we’re riding through the night like this when you should be back at camp overseeing your army?”
“There were a lot of wounded. Oda Nobunaga—and in this case, Date Masamune and Tokugawa Ieyasu—is a worthy opponent.”
She wanted to point out that he’d just changed the subject again, but over their time together she’d become adept at following his thoughts. It took an agile mind, and a certain intuition, but she could do it. Sometimes, she made him spell it out anyway, but it was so comfortable being with him like this that her inclination to push back was waning rapidly.
“You didn’t want me to insist on tending the wounded?”
“I didn’t want you wandering camp—it would be dangerous and inappropriate.”
Inappropriate? She wasn’t sure whether he meant that she might see, or hear, inappropriate things, or whether he was just being weirdly jealous. Come to think of it, he could mean both.
“I don’t think I would be in any danger in your camp, with you nearby,” she said, seriously. “But I travelled to the camp for the sole purpose of seeing you, and even if I didn’t like it, I would follow your instructions while at the camp.”
“She saved Date’s life, you know. I probably would have killed him before Tokugawa could get to him. Though he showed surprising stamina for a man who I suspect was badly wounded.” Kenshin’s assessment was ungrudging—he admired courage and strength in friend and foe alike. “I look forward to a proper fight in the future.”
“Setting aside your quest for a suitable opponent…” Anna leaned her head back more securely against Kenshin’s chest, and suppressed a sigh of contentment. “You know that I’d do a lot to save your life, right?”
Kenshin immediately tensed. “You promised—”
“But you have my word that I won’t chase you onto a battlefield.”
“Good. I don’t need you to. You’re a very strange woman—I shouldn’t have to make you promise not to subject yourself to… all that.”
“In exchange—”
“You’re trying to bargain with me?”
“I’m hoping you’ll hear me out.” She took the silence that followed as assent, if not happy assent. “I want you to promise you’ll live.”
“You what? That’s—” He stopped abruptly.
“I’m very sorry if I’ve upset you, Kenshin-sama.” She hadn’t wanted to. She’d much rather have ridden on without conflict. “But I care about what happens to you. It will make it easier for me to stay away from battles, or war camps, or whatever, if I know that you are doing your utmost to come back safe and sound.”
“You don’t need to worry. Nothing ever touches me.”
“Kenshin-sama… I trust you. So if you tell me that you will do your utmost to live, then I will believe it.” She’d try, anyway. But it would help a lot if she knew he cared enough to come back. She’d heard the whispers that he couldn’t be touched, couldn’t be killed, because he was the so-called God of War. It just made her more worried, since she’d already noticed a certain sad fatalism in Kenshin.
They rode in silence for several long minutes after that. Kenshin’s grip on her slowly relaxed, but remained strong enough to be reassuring. She found she had to keep pressing her lips together not to add to what she’d said—whether to cajole, or entreat, or just argue. Eventually, she heard Kenshin sigh, but gently, like a release of pent-up breath. He drew the horse to a careful stop, allowed the reins to loop over the pommel of the saddle, and wrapped both arms around Anna.
“I told Date Masamune that dying for love was the worst kind of foolishness. And it was both of them! She risked everything to be there—she’d already interposed herself between us once, earlier in the fight, although neither of us knew it. But Date was worse. He was losing, he’d just dropped his sword, and he still had the nerve to knock away his woman’s killing shot.”
“Bravado?” She’d suggested that before, but Kenshin hadn’t answered her. Right now she cared more about Kenshin talking to her, and holding her, than anything else, but she was still a little curious.
“No, worse. He didn’t want her to have to kill. He didn’t want it to change her. I didn’t hear all of it, but that was the gist.”
“I think that’s—” Anna stopped on the edge of saying that she thought it was very sweet. More than just sweet, it showed true caring and protectiveness.
“It was ridiculous. He endangered both of them by not letting her shoot. I had to let them go after that.”
“Of course you did.” Because he was a good man, and had too much integrity to pursue a fight under such circumstances. And probably because seeing the woman there shocked him. But either way, it was just like him to refrain from mindless killing, despite leaving an enemy commander alive.
“I wasn’t being kind. They took all the enjoyment out of the fight—both of them. …And I’d heard Date was a ruthless adversary, the kind of man who didn’t let sentiment come in the way of his duty!”
He sounded peeved, Anna thought. She had to smile. She hid her face so that he couldn’t accuse her to laughing at him. Then she felt a kiss on her hair—the first of several. Her body temperature seemed to rise with each kiss, and the way his hands were stroking her back. She didn’t protest when Kenshin finally lifted her face up to his and pressed his lips to hers. A hand slid into her hair, and their kiss deepened, becoming more passionate.
When it finally ended, they were both short of breath. Anna wondered if she looked as startled and—happy?—as Kenshin. Probably worse, she decided.
“You’ll stay safe?” He spoke almost too softly to hear.
“I’ll do everything I can to stay safe. How about you?” The moonlight turned his hair and eyes to silver; he looked almost otherworldly.
“I’ll—You know I’ll need to go on fighting?”
“Yes.” She wouldn’t debate the need, or whether it was personal, or duty.
“Yet you still want me to stay safe?”
“I want you to promise to keep yourself alive.”
“I can do that.”
“Then I will promise to stay as safe as possible, and to stay alive, for you.”
“Anna, you are—”
“Very strange?”
To her surprise, he laughed—she wasn’t sure she’d heard him laugh before.
“I was going to say stubborn. And hard to resist.” He stopped laughing, and bent to kiss her just below the ear, in a way that made her gasp. “Also, right now, I want you all for myself.” He kissed her jaw, and the corner of her mouth.
Anna hummed her agreement. That wasn’t a problem: she wanted Kenshin all to herself, as well. Really, this moonlight ride made perfect sense, now that she thought about it. She’d just have to count on Kenshin to keep her from falling off the horse.
“Well it looks like this is where it all ends...
I can just tell. It’s not like I was keeping track or anything.”
That was a lie. With each life I’ve come to this specific place to leave a mark. It’s a vast beach, with an ocean that stretches as far as the eye can see and trees that remain green for eternity. From the time I became aware that I was reliving my lives, I made sure to leave a ramen cup in this cave right behind me, underneath a set of rocks. It was strange that regardless of what I do in every life, this one place was the only place where my impact on each life remained clear. It changed with each life, as if adding a new layer to the chapters in my life. Anything I left here seemed to be protected from time...frozen with chakra.
“--the ocean looks so beautiful...nostalgic even.”
I say as a I take a drag from a joint Shikamaru gave me.
I’ve always wondered what was across that vast stretch of water, yanno? With only one life to have, I never thought I’d be able to journey across it. When I died the first time I realized life wasn’t long enough to do everything you wanted. It sucked, but it was something I’ve come to terms with years before it happened.
As you can tell I was given the chance to do everything that I’ve ever wanted. One Thousand Lifetimes to be exact. I journeyed across that ocean, visited places you’d never dream of, fought enemies tougher than any Goddess of Chakra, made friends and memories I will never forget. Hell I even went to space. It’s not as cool as you think, dattebayo. It’s pretty cold out there.
Anyways, the point I was trying to make was that sure on the outside it may seem like these One Thousand Lives were amazing. But once your friends start to go and people start to forget you, it becomes tough. Becoming acquaintances, friends, lovers all became....as Shikamaru would put it, a drag. My eyes that were once full of life started to become tired. Even when I would return as a child, people would be able to tell instantly that that kid had been through a lot of shittebayo.
They weren’t wrong.
Everyone told me about who I was. Uzumaki Naruto. So many times I keep on forgetting that I am him. I would look at the statues and belongings of his as if they weren’t mine. I even criticized my own fashion sense by the 600th life and started dressing nicer, even started taking care of my skin. Rule of thumb, moisturization is key! At least that was what Ino would always say.
“---maahh...” I complain as the blunt starts to run.
Stuff like this always happened whenever I would reminisce.
The only thing that kept me going were the select few people in my life who saw me as a pivotal part of their life. “They would never ignore me no matter how hard I tried.” I say while laughing to myself.
Sasuke, my rival, my brother and my best friend. In every life things always seemed the same with you. But I liked it that way. You acting super nice to me would only feel like pity. Which was why I never told you the truth about my circumstances. But I know you knew. You just never bothered me about it. Too bad I caught on, because in every life I would come back, you seemed to treat me the same always. You’d even slip up sometimes. That Rinnegan of yours was the dead giveaway that I needed. Thank you for being there for me always and pushing me to be my greatest self. I’m going to be joining the real you very soon.
Hinata...the love that I was too blind to see even though you were staring right at me. I was a fool to not have understood your love for me earlier. I chased after Sakura constantly right in front of your eyes. I know it must of hurt you so much, but then again...your heart is so kind, so gentle and so beautiful that even then I knew you were still thinking about my happiness. Yet when I confronted you about it...I learned that it truly did hurt you...so I had to make things right. I am glad you gave me a chance, Hinata. I needed that slap from you! I wasn’t acting myself until you snapped me right back. A girl as perfect as you doesn’t deserve someone like me. Yet time and time again you choose me. It’s safe to say that in every lifetime...you always choose me as the one you’d fall in love with, dattebayo. You are an angel in disguise, Hinata and for that I will always always love you from the bottom of my hearttebayo. I was happy to have spent the last few of my lifetimes with you, Princess. Those were one of the happiest moments of my life.
...and lastly... “...gawsh this is a hard one...”
Ino... in every lifetime... you were always there. Watching...waiting...hating as I seized up every ounce of happiness from you with my selfishness. I never looked at you as a major part of my life, until you took a pompous seat within my mind. Even now I can hear you berating me for acting the way I am right now. I had never fought somebody so many times in my life. Hell I even remember when we took things too far and just kept on killing each other lifetime after lifetime. I hated you so much. You tormented my mind and created that ridiculous timeline where everything was fucked. In the end when I found out the cause of it all...everything made sense. I was taking Sakura away from you...the one who truly deserved and I did it without hesitation. Over and over and over again until you lost your mind.
I’ve never felt more sorry about anything in my life..
...well except for one other thing.
...I’m sorry for falling in love with you. It was bound to happen with all the things we been through together. The one thing that brought us together was something that defined us both... falling in love with you broke that... It was there that everything started to change... and before I knew it you had vanished into thin air... my last and only friend.
“If you are listening. I still love you... and I am thankful for all the good times we had. Your impact on me made me stronger than ever. Which is why I am able to take this final breath with stride. It’s all thanks to you.” I say as I look up at the sky.
It doesn’t seem like I will see you wherever I am going, but if I can... I hope to see you again someday.
As the surrounding started to fade a circular wooden door opened up above me. From it... all the hands of those waiting for me reached for my soul. Kaa-chan, Tou-chan, Hinata, Sasuke, Ino...
“Finally... I am free...” I felt this before... my soul leaving my
physical form. I slowly reached out to ya’ll and before I knew it...I was finally headed where I should of been a Thousand Lifetimes Ago.
And so my story...
...The Story of The Thousand Year Star finally comes to an end.
“Sayonara, Dattebayo...”
Warnings: Fiery speeches, angst
“I asked for information, ninja, not your opinion.” Mitsuhide said, drumming his fingers irritably on the butt of his matchlock, staring testily at Sasuke across the sputtering fire he had built in a slightly less burned out corner of the temple.
“And I asked you to give me back my glasses, but here we are.” Sasuke replied wryly, the indignation in his usually impassive expression wasted on the tattered curtain that was receiving it. “I am absolutely never providing EMT services for any warlord going forward. You make lord Kenshin look incredibly polite.” He muttered to himself.
“I don’t suppose I make anything look like much of anything to you at the moment.” Mitshude retorted acerbically. He had lost consciousness, and still felt damnably weak and unsteady despite his racing mind.
“Taking a man’s glasses, that’s unconscionable. I don’t know what I expected from the Akechi Mitsuhide, but still, that’s a dirty trick.”
“Oh, so my reputation precedes me, even into the future.”
Mitsuhide banked the fire, waving away the smoke that flared up from the damp wood as it drifted into his face.
“It’s not like I’d leave the man my bff– for reasons known only to herself and whichever star guides people toward terrible choices– loves.”
“Your what now?” Mitsuhide asked, sharply, eyes narrowed at Sasuke as he considered the revelation of frequent ceiling and floor assisted visits.
“Best friend forever.” Sasuke said reaching up to the blank space where his glasses normally sat as if to push them up the bridge of his nose disapprovingly. “And you have no cause for jealousy, she’s like a sister to me.”
“Yes, I suppose if you’d had designs you could’ve just gone back to your own time together.” Mitsuhide replied. “You said that the fissure would open again, so tell me where and when and I’ll just fetch her myself.”
“I also just told you that that course of action is extremely ill advised, if it’s even possible at all. The potential distortion of space-time–” Sasuke replied, cutting himself off with a sigh.
“Alright, so that’s the least feasible option. We’ll just put that aside for now. What other course of action can we take?”
“I’m afraid I’m otherwise employed and must inform you that I have an extremely binding contractual obligation which regretfully prevents me from joining you in any ill-advised ventures likely to result in dismemberment, severe emotional trauma, beheading or otherwise unspecified bodily harm.” Sasuke countered flatly, reaching for his phantom glasses again and dropping his hand with a noise of displeasure.
“Were you under the impression that you had a choice? I’m afraid not. Keeping you hostage is an absolute necessity.”
“I could take you in a fight right now.” Sasuke said to a patch of white ash on a scorched pillar.
“Oh I have no doubt, but you won’t. I might die, and you’re just ever so slightly more devoted to your bff than Kenshin.” Mitsuhide replied knowingly.
“Dear god, it’s like someone desaturated Shingen and surgically removed his conscience.” Sasuke whispered in horrified awe.
“And If you’re thinking ‘surely lord Kenshin will come for me!’ you should know that I know he doesn’t know you came here, and that I can keep you hidden for years.” Mitsuhide added.
“You really just added a new and disturbing dimension to my relationship with Kenshin right off the cuff there, didn’t you?”
“Spare me the inane chatter, give me options. How do we get her to the wormhole at the right time?” He asked with a gesture that was wasted on Sasuke.
“Leaving aside that we’re well beyond my known timeline, there’s no fail-safe way to ensure that any message you send will survive.”
“If I could just get her back to Tanba…” Mitsuhide said, stroking his chin thoughtfully, thinking of the myriad hiding places he had built into the castle and the ways he could draw her attention to them without alerting five centuries worth of residents.
“You should know that Tanba was a ruin in our time, and my calculations suggest that an incredibly dramatic causal variance would be required to change that outcome.”
They sat in contemplative silence for awhile, until Mitsuhide dropped his fist into the palm of his other hand triumphantly. “I’ve been thinking about this all wrong. It’s the people!” He said enthusiastically.
“Are you feeling dizzy again, by any chance?” Sasuke asked with a note of alarm.
“I feel like I’ve been trampled by several horses, but that’s not important.” He answered dismissively, his mind on fire with plans.
He had been nearly paralyzed with leaden misery at his own helplessness, feeling only the overwhelming distance between them and the implacable rule of time around him like water closing over his head.
Even if she didn’t return to him, even if they never met again, he had to make certain that she knew that she had been loved, would be loved, always. He only needed a problem to solve to find his feet.
“We have two issues– how to physically secure a message, and how to draw her attention to the correct place.”
“In extremely simplified terms, yes.”
“She won’t be too keen to look me up, if I know her. She’ll be trying to carry on and let go of me, which precludes some kind of monument. But the people– they can protect Tanba and convey my message all at the same time.”
“I don’t follow…” Sasuke replied curiously.
“Of course you don’t, but all you need to do is follow along.”
He had driven himself to the brink of collapse the rest of that winter, exhausting every moment that he could conceivably be away from Azuchi without rousing more then the usual levels of suspicion. He returned on a soft spring day just in the nick of time for a war council.
Hideyoshi strode toward him with a mixture of anger and concern, grabbing his collar to growl “where the the hell have you been?”
“Starving himself half to death, by the look of it.” Ieyasu interjected dourly.
“Are we sure he hasn’t got the plague or something? He has a look in his eyes– and where’s the lass? Why isn’t she with you?” Masamune added, studying him closely.
Nobunaga studied him impassively, and waited for the tumult to die down. Only the inner circle was present, as Mitsuhide had requested. He strode forward, but did not sit.
“What I’m about to tell you doesn’t leave this room.” He began, and explained her absence.
Masamune offered a low whistle, with an amused look in his eye, while Hideyoshi stared blankly and Nobunaga tapped his fan on his knee thoughtfully. Ieyasu snorted derisively, and Mitsunari knit his brow in concentration.
“That was several months ago. What have you been doing since then?” Hideyoshi asked, finally shifting out of his reverie.
Mitsuhide smiled perhaps the first entirely honest smile he had ever offered them, knowing that it was probably ghastly on his gaunt face. “Why, scheming to bring her home, of course.”
“You’ve finally lost that tangled excuse for a mind.” Ieyasu said harshly.
“Oh quite possibly.” Mitushide answered, sweeping his gaze across the room as he made his great gamble. “But then again, none of you have ever known me when I truly wanted something.”
Nobunaga narrowed his eyes with a taut smile. “And just how do you intend to accomplish such a feat?” He asked, coldly.
Mitsuhide cocked his head and looked out the window at the soft blue sky, picturing her under the cherry blossoms for half a moment. “With the closing of this rotten age, my lords. The time for peace and unification has come, one way–” he dropped his hand to his gun, “or another.”
“You crazy bastard.” Masamune said with a wild laugh. “I like this side of you.”
The blood had drained from Hideyoshi’s face, and his voice shook as his hand drifted toward his sword, hissing “what have you done?”
“I wouldn’t, Hideyoshi. If I don’t leave this council with my head on my shoulders all hell will break loose.” Mitsuhide answered, lightly.
“Speak your piece.” Nobunaga said darkly.
“With Kenshin and Shingen alive and dragging the last of the Imagawa in tow, we could be at war for who knows how long, and with unpredictable results. But I need a rough sequence of events to unfold, and it doesn’t include endless war. The remnants of monks of Heiei and the Mori are problems all their own, and then there’s your puppet Shogun.” He said, gesturing at Nobunaga.
“We’re all aware of the current situation.” Hideyoshi spat through gritted teeth. “What’s your point?”
“There are too many personal vendettas and ambitions at play for this to ever be settled under only our volition, unless it’s by battle royale with only one left alive. Given her affection for all of you, that’s not a particularly desirable outcome either.”
“All this for a woman.” Masamune said with amusement.
“Lord Mitsuhide…” Mitsunari cut in at last, with quiet dread in his voice, “you’re talking as if you’ve brought in an outside army.”
The air was electric as Nobunaga leaned forward with a hard glitter in his eyes.
“Not so much an outside army as evening the odds for the people we have no business trampling over on our way to glory. I’ve armed the women in every fief, and given the farmers instructions to stop working the fields if our demands for peace aren’t met. They may choose to rise up and kill me, of course, but as long as I’m a convenient mouthpiece, I’m reasonably safe.”
Hideyoshi struck him hard across the face, leaving him with the taste of blood in his mouth. “You’re going to– no, you’ve already thrown the country into chaos and famine!” He thundered, red faced with fury.
“It sounds quite peaceful outside to me. More peaceful than it has in my memory. No thundering cavalry, no armies marching at the pleasure of men who are, in the end, only men no better or worse than they.” Mitsuhide replied, dabbing the blood from the corner of his mouth with his sleeve.
“What hope could peasant women and farmers have against trained armies?” Nobunaga asked contemptuously.
“Not much, it’s true, but how long do you think your foot soldiers would heed the order to attack their mothers, sisters, daughters and wives? You’d order them to destroy the future, and for what–” his voice rose, hoarse and strident, “to say that you ruled the world?”
He made a sweeping gesture, hoping that his words, always his favorite weapon, would secure a bloodless victory.
“Every throne casts the shadow of its own destruction, my lords. We clamber to the heavens and live in dread of those we leave below, driven to greater and greater cruelty to avoid being dragged to the hell that we ourselves have made.”
He dropped his hands and and his voice, and looked each of them in the eye in turn.
“Isn’t it better to dig graves for our pride than our people?”
The silence was louder than any sound could ever have been.
It was finally broken by a ringing, rolling laugh from Nobunaga, who finally sat back and cleared his throat with a wide, wild smile, and the tiniest flash of relief somewhere far, far back in his dark eyes.
“I knew you were going to revolt eventually, but holding a gun to all of our heads, from the Imperial court to the local magistrates–” he shook his head and chuckled again, “and not even with the ambition to rule! Ingenious.”
“My lord–” Hideyoshi said, his expression tense.
“Enough. We’ve been outplayed.” Nobunaga said with a wave of his fan. “It’s almost poetic– in the end, the people unified themselves.”
…
How many years ago had that day been? His mind was still sharp, even as his body had begun to fail him, heart growing weaker by the day. He had wrung out every bit of his strength taking aim at the distant future.
The years had been full of mountains of correspondence, leagues of riding from one end of the country to the other to keep the peace, to pluck out the seeds of war before they could be well and truly sown.
And always in the dark, the memory of her, and the hope that every step forward and every day would build a shrine that could carry his heart to her.
He whispered to her in the night, when the fear that it wasn’t enough chilled him, knowing that the odds were astronomically stacked against them, he whispered every sweet and longing word into quiet space where she should have been. Dreams of her carried him through, of the warmth of her body, the feel of her skin, every exquisite shudder and sigh, even the painful aching fire of unfulfilled lust he carried like a penitent barbarian in their horsehair shirt.
He had spent the first half of his life trusting no-one, and spent the latter half holding his trust like a weapon– trust in her, in himself, in whatever capricious force had brought them together in the first place.
The irony of dying in hopes of giving himself a second chance at life was never lost on him, who had never so much as believed in the immaterial soul. Time was an enemy and his dearest ally.
With the final preparations made, with nothing left but to leave his faith in the children and grandchildren of his friends and one time enemies, he was helped into the saddle for one last ride. The old scar on his arm ached as the early winter snow drifted down.
The ruins of Honno-ji had become an overgrown mass over the years, but he had built a small cozy hut there, the place where he had begun to live, the place where he intended to die.
“Thank you, Kyubei.” He said as took the proffered cup of sake gratefully, watching the snowfall in the quiet night.
“I’m Kyubei’s grandson,” the young man said, and gave him a conciliatory pat on the shoulder.
“Ah. Forgive an old man for losing track of time.” He said, quietly.
The quiet snowfall had lulled him into a deep, peaceful sleep, a dream where she was curled against him, so warm, a dream of a long ago kiss upon the back of his neck, of her cradled in his arms, of her beautiful body tangled with his, of her precious voice telling him
You do not have to be good
but you are
Somewhere in the deep blue dawn he heard the calling. He struggled up, half staggering, half crawling, toward the door.
“Wait– where are you going?” The boy cried out, trying to take hold of his sleeve, but he felt lighter than he had in years, felt as light as the flakes of falling snow.
“The wild geese are calling me to my place by her side…” he said, bare feet in the soft snow, strangely warm as he walked toward the place where the balcony had been and folded his legs neatly beneath him, hands in his lap, heart in his hands to give to her as he closed his eyes.
…
She had had one day and 7 hours to dispose as best she could of her life, but nothing had ever been easier. She had already been living as if she were dead, and dropped her letters of farewell into the post without a single regret.
It felt as if she were floating a little above the ground as she carefully wrapped up four sets of glasses for Sasuke, and went to the monument to wait with one more poem on her lips like a prayer
A kiss on the forehead—erases misery. I kiss your forehead. A kiss on the eyes—lifts sleeplessness. I kiss your eyes. A kiss on the lips—is a drink of water. I kiss your lips.
How many lives were folded between the two of them like ink dropped into water, and why, she didn’t ask. Just one, even if it hurt sometimes, if it frightened them both, if it was struggle, just one would be so much more than enough.
The pressure and the crackle in the air brought grateful tears to her eyes when they arrived, and she stood fearlessly and walked into the wormhole, eyes wide open.
It was the same dark haze but she felt as if she were being dragged every which way, buffeted first toward one blurred landscape and then another, searching frantically for him.
She saw the diverging paths of his life, the violent heartbreaking ends, the loneliness, and shards of incohate moments.
Snow. He was there in the snow, seated as if in silent meditation, beauty still apparent under the marks of age.
He didn’t stir as she cried out his name, again and again, telling him she had returned as the sight of his serene face faded. She felt a familiar cool hand brush her tears away with a touch so soft and light, felt guided toward a faint light, and began to run.
…
“Are you ill?” Nobunaga asked as Mitsuhide pitched forward onto his knees, and clutched his head.
“I– I just had the odd sensation of having… died.” He mumbled, faintly.
Sasuke cocked his head thoughtfully, watching the storm as it descended.
“You called these peace talks under threat of revolution you’re not allowed to die of a broken heart, you insufferable snake.” Hideyoshi said angrily.
The four of them had ridden up to Honno-ji as the storm came on, and he felt as if his head were full of intense flashes of something he couldn’t name– other selves, other lives.
“I did warn you that the timeline reasserting itself might be unpleasant.” Sasuke said dryly, and adjusted his battered glasses.
“Shouldn’t she be here by now?” Hideyoshi asked as he hoisted Mitsuhide to his feet.
“There’s no guarantee–” Sasuke began, and was cut off by Nobunaga gesturing toward the balcony.
He scrambled across the sleet slicked ground, feeling that same desperate fear and hope as he stumbled up the stairs, overcome with the sensation that it had been so much longer than a single year, weak in the knees as he slid down, straining to see into the twisting cloud.
She toppled into him, snow in her hair and on her lashes, and they fell together onto the cold and sooty wood of the balcony. She was so warm in his trembling arms, her pounding heart pressed to his.
The reality of love ch 2
She woke to a strange room surrounding her. The futon under her was new. She blinked as she took it all in. The room was like her previous one in Azuchi when it hit her she never left. She was still stuck in the sengoku with him. He was him she saw the night prior. Sakamoto was one of his estates. Her door slid open and she looked at the intruder on her her thoughts.
It was him.
"My dear did you sleep well?" He asked.
"Mitsuhide what am I doing here?" She asked.
"I am normally the one asking questions and it seems you have the better of me." He replied.
"What does that mean?" She asked.
"You seem to know me but I am sure we have never met. I never forget a face and I would not forget one like yours." He replied.
"You don't know me?" She asked. She wondered if this was hell again. Her own private hell.
" You are a stranger in a strange land i see but I don't know you as you seem to know me." He replied. "Can you please tell me how you came to fall out of the sky? I have been trying to figure that out since you landed in the lake."
"You really don't know me?" She asked.
"No my dear." He said as he sat down next to the futon.
"You aren't married?" She asked.
"No." He chuckled.
"Then where the hell am I?" She asked her self.
"I welcomed you to Sakamoto last night." He simply stated. "I am the lord here."
"I know. You are Akechi Mitsuhide." She said without thinking.
"You are?" He prompted.
"Kit." She said as she struggled to sit up.
"Now Kit can you tell me how you know so much about me?" He asked as he looked her over.
"It's a long story and one you probably will never believe." She said.
"I have heard some of those before." He chuckled. It was always a sound that warmed her heart. She forgot in those few moments all the pain she had felt for days as she listened to it.
"Alright don't say I didn't warn you though." She said and the words tumbled from her mouth. He sat there looking at her blankly as she spoke and waited until she was done.
"That is an interesting story." He said.
"The sad part is it is all true." She replied. "I know it seems far fetched but I swear it is all true."
"It does seem to be beyond reality itself. However I watched you fall from the sky. No trees nor mountains were around you. You fell from nothing into the lake. You did have to come from somewhere. You are different. You speak different. You hold yourself differently as well. I have to believe in your far fetched story as if it is the truth until you prove it to be other than the truth." He said as he looked her over. "Though it does not explain where you know so much about me though."
"We were close in the other place." She said softly, "Until he was ordered to marry."
"Ordered to marry?" He asked.
"Nobunaga was adamant that all his vassals marry to create the next generation to protect his line." She said.
"That does sound like Nobunaga." He laughed. "However here he would not do that. Our lives are our own as long as we continue our service when he needs us. Peace has been established through most of Japan now. There are no major wars anymore."
"What?" She asked.
"It has been this way for a few years now." He said with a smile. "Most saw the idea of unification as a good one. There were only a few hold outs which were easily fixed. The ones you said Masamune, Hideyoshi, Ieyasu, and Mitsunari all have their own estates now and we mostly live on them and not in Azuchi."
"Peace is here?" She asked.
"Yes." He replied.
"Everyone is okay?" She asked.
"Yes." He replied.
"Thank god." She said as she let her breath out. This was like Sasuke had said once before, there must have been crossovers in the timelines at times. The crack she went into lead to one of them. This land was one of peace. An alternate reality or a parallel universe with a different line but the same people. "Why haven't you married yet then?"
"Good god you sound like every other woman in my clan." He said as he let out a bark of laughter. "Don't you think a question like that is more for later?"
"I'm sorry." She said, "I am forgetting I know the other you not the You, you."
"If this is not going to be confusing enough." He chuckled. His golden eyes were laughing as well. The situation was not lost on him either.
"I will try to remember you are not him, just another him." She said.
"You loved him didn't you?" He asked.
"Yes." She replied. "I stayed in this time for him. I could've gone back to my own. I chose him though."
"And he chose to follow orders instead of you." He said softly. "I am sorry."
"It wasn't you." She said.
"But a different version of me though." He said. "I am still sorry."
"I tried to go home." She said.
"Instead you ended up here." He replied.
"Yes." She said as her head hung lower.
"Maybe that was a sign instead of a mistake." He said. "Though I can not make you a princess of the Oda line I can declare you one of the Akechi line. You shall reside here until you can find a way back to your world."
"You would do that?" She asked.
"I just did." He replied with a smile. "Welcome home Princess."
"Mitsuhide I don't know what to say." She said as she looked into his face. It was the same as the other but it seemed so different at the same time. This man was not the same but he was.
"Say thank you Mitsuhide." He prompted.
"Thank you Mitsuhide." She said with a smile.
"Good girl." He said with a smile and she felt her heart soar again with a possibility for happiness after all.
Later that day when she could move again without wincing he had brought her some new clothes since everything she had was wet from her fall in the lake, she had changed and he was showing her around. "What did you do in Azuchi?"
"I was the caretaker." She replied.
"Did you enjoy it?" He asked.
"It was a job and I could earn my keep." She said.
"But did you enjoy it?" He asked again.
"Not really but I would do it again if I had too." She said.
"What would you like to do?" He asked.
"I was a seamstress in my own time though it had a different name there. I was a fashion designer. I designed new clothes and different styles." She said.
"Is that what you wish to do?" He asked.
"I would like to, yes." She said.
"Then I propose a deal for you." He began as he stopped. "If you help with running the castle and my other estates for you time here I will set you up as a seamstress and you can use your free time as you wish."
"Mitsuhide how can you do that?" She asked.
"I am master here my dear, remember?" He chuckled, "I can do as I wish."
"But setting me up is too expensive." She replied.
"I doubt you could break me or my coffers, my dear." He said. The people of the castle were watching their lord and the new Princess as they toured the castle grounds. They were shocked to find her there as they had not been informed she would be a guest. They saw the way their lord was around her and though the idea of the foreign born princess being an Akechi princess as well was beyond their minds it was the way he looked at her that made people stop and pay attention. She would be their lords. They all knew it. They watched her as well.
"Your people are watching me like a hawk." She laughed.
"They have never seen someone like you." He easily replied.
"The traders." She started to say.
"Not your foreignness, Kit. The fact you are beautiful." He said.
"Oh." She replied, "but I am not."
"Do you really think that Princess?" He asked as he hooked his finger under her chin to lift her head up to look into her eyes.
"Sure why not. I am nothing spectacular." She said easily.
"We must change your perception of yourself then." He said, "because you are spectacular and blinding."
"Mitsuhide." She said softly.
"You may not like the truth but it is how everyone sees you, my dear." He said equally as softly as he let her chin go and she turned to hide her crimson hot cheeks. He chuckled as well as she did that. "Color in your face suits you as well."
"You are a tease." She said. "I guess that never changes."
"Am I like him?" He asked quietly.
"A little." She replied. "You sound like him, you look like him, somethings are the same and some are different."
"If you could go back would you?" He asked.
"No." She said. "I want to go home."
"Tell me more about it." He prompted and he listened as she went on and on about the different things. He knew he would lose his heart to this woman who already won over one version of himself in a different reality. He was going to enjoy her, he was relaxed as they walked.
