SLEUTH (1972): Inventive, deliciously sardonic thriller, adapted by Anthony Shaffer from his stage play and starring Sir Laurence Olivier as wealthy, snobbish mystery writer Andrew Wyke and Michael Caine as Milo Tindle, an Anglo-Italian hairdresser who is having an affair with Wyke's wife. Wyke invites Milo to his country estate to offer him an unusual proposition, which turns into a far more sinister game.

Ably directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz (his last feature), it often feels like an elongated COLUMBO episode: a playfully acidic, class-conscious game of cat and mouse centered on an arrogant aristocratic prick who's confident that he's clever enough to get away with murder. To say more than that would be spoiling things.

The film's chief weakness is its extreme length — 138 minutes — but even if you find yourself getting a bit restless, it remains many orders of magnitude better than the appalling 2007 remake by Kenneth Branagh. The remake features a typically fine performance by Caine (this time as Wyke), but Jude Law is badly out of his depth as Milo, and it's made almost unendurable by Branagh's exhaustingly heavy-handed direction, singularly off-putting production design, and a dreadful Harold Pinter script that retains precisely none of the 1972 film's sublime dialogue. The 2007 version is much shorter, at just 88 minutes, but Pinter guts the story so severely that it barely makes sense unless you're familiar with the earlier version, and it's mean in all the wrong ways. (It's viciously homophobic, too.)

CONTAINS LESBIANS? This would first require the story to have female characters. VERDICT: The 1972 version is marvelous, especially if you're a COLUMBO fan, but you may long for an intermission. The 2007 version is an indefensible cinematic atrocity from which only Caine emerges with any honor intact; in a more just world, it would have ended Branagh and Pinter's careers.

Underused psychological/body horror concept: Character who knows their body was changed without their knowledge or permission, but also realizes their mind was affected because the change itself doesnt bother them at all. They're in a form unrecognizable to how they've been the whole rest of their life, and the most upsetting part is the realization that they're unable to be upset about it.

oh fuck yeah. i'm definitely projecting here, but there is something so satisfyingly horrifying about being able to rationally recognise that you should feel a certain way, but being physically and psychologically incapable of it, because the part of you that would enable you to access those emotions has been cut away, torn up by the roots and cauterised shut before you could feel the pain of the wound it left behind. the added insult to injury of not only having something stolen from you, but taking all of the rage and pain you might have felt at its loss with it. the body-mind entanglement; phantom limbs and phantom grief.

hiii im sure you’ve answered this before but in regards to your twst x Pokémon, how do you choose which Pokémon go give to the cast?? really curious since your choices are unique :O

unique in a good way, I hope? 😅 (jk jk I haven't come across too many pokemon AUs, so I was going in without preconceptions, I guess!) I was sorta aiming somewhere between doing, like, a full AU with internal consistency and everything, and just picking entirely based on theme/character, so maybe that's why! basically I just set some arbitrary rules (no legendaries/no repeats/evo stages based on year) and then went on ~vibes~. a couple were also suggestions (thank you guys!) and last-minute decisions, so it was a bit of a delightful mess of ideas!

my one regret is that I should have given Riddle a Togedemaru after all. ...you know what, he can have one now, why not

Tubbo: The life system– In DND, when a character hits 0 health, they have to do something called a "saving throw," it's a death saving throw. If they roll under 10, they fail that death saving throw, and if you fail 3 death saving throws, your character is dead.

Tubbo: How I'm treating saving throws in the Realm SMP is basically, if you die, it's equal to you failing a death saving throw. [...] If you lose all 3 of your lives, you will be banned off the server for 24 hours, and when you come back, your stats will be reset to 0, you are a new character*, you are dead.

Tubbo: Players on the server are able to attach this to lore, if let's say they're doing a lore character, that character's dead, they can come back with a new one for things like roleplay and lore.** And storytelling! [...] I'm mainly leaving [lore] completely open-ended for the players of the server to tell the stories they want to make. I just want to make the ultimate sandbox for them, and plan events and activities that they can use to develop their own original characters, is kind of my plan.

Tubbo discussed Realm's life system earlier today during stream before Realm SMP opened!

** Tubbo isn't saying players HAVE to make new characters when they die 3 times in one day. Tubbo reiterates that he wants Realms to be a sandbox for players to tell the stories they want to make.
