MSM Headcanons - Basics (Part 1/2)
Here we are! I'm gonna start sharing my MSM headcanons topic-by-topic. Let's start with a lil' grab-bag of general ones.
Quick Key:
Information that has been explicitly stated/shown by an official source is marked in green
Information that has been directly implied by an official source is marked in yellow
Ideas that have been adopted/inspired from another person/fanwork is marked in red
1- Most monsters you know about are usually entire species. Exceptions to this are merely individuals (as in, there's only one of each of these monsters), those being The Wubboxes, The Ethereals, The Seasonals, The Mythicals/Dreamythicals, The Legendaries (Werdos, Shugafam), The Wublins and The Celestials.
-- Also notably an Individual is Enchantling; Since only very few of its kind exists at a time, there's usually only one at Magical Sanctum's helm every few hundred years.
2- Monsters are sentient and normally fairly intelligent, even the ones with more animal-like behavior. The least intelligent monsters are still at the same level as a young or below-average human.
3- The Monstro language, Monstrous, has three types: Standard, Werd, and Celestial. Though they are considered one language, and are written the same, all three are drastically different in pronunciation.
--Standard is the "normal", most common kind consisting of melodic growls, chirps, clicks and other vocalizations; aside from the vocal cord-less and those with medical exemptions (for which there is MSL (Monstrous Sign Language)), nearly all educated monsters can speak it easily. Standard Monstrous is somewhat easy to understand for English-speaking humans, once you get the sounds memorized, as it works extremely similarly to the aforementioned language.
--Werd Monstrous is a very unique dialect, sounding nearly identical to humanity's English (with a few differences, like forehead being "bonkbumper"). The odd thing about Werd Monstrous is that most monsters have a tough time speaking it, only able to retain and recite few words and phrases; aside from higher beings, the only ones who can speak it fluently are the elusive Werdos, as long as they're kept properly nourished with Relics.
--The last type of Monstrous, as the name would imply, is said to only be spoken and understood by Celestials. Legends say that, to mortals, it mostly sounds like a series of "Shaba-bum"s and "Rootitoot"s.
4- The "scalps" (as islands are referred to colloquially) are much more expansive than they seem. Monster civilization is surprisingly human-like and advanced, ranging from cozy villages to big cities. The architecture, tech and aesthetics of a given place is based heavily on what island it's atop.
5- The island castle is an ancient tradition that's still kept up to this day. Formerly used as a shared shelter for juvenile monsters, the castle, in recent years, has become a sort of guaranteed home available to any monster who needs it. The interior is like a fancy apartment building, full of cozy rooms on every wall, a communal area on the main floor and a dingy laundromat in the basement. Whenever the population rises sharply in an island, the castle will be delicately expanded to fit more residents. Though private housing is available for those who need it, it's a great option to have.
6- Monstro has a popular fast food chain called "Mawnchie's". It's basically McDonald's in brand recognition and quality, except it has a much more expansive menu, including things like pizza and turkey. Never order the turkey from there. Just don't.
7- Any monster can live on any island; it's just that only a selection of them are accounted for in the composition of the island's song. Monsters that aren't officially included are still welcome to join in, they just might get lost if they aren't great at improvision.

here's more of the cowboy bebop au btw (currently rewatching the series)
âThese used to mean something.â
Zhongli looks at the vision on Kaeyaâs belt with a slight frown. Most people treasure theirsâ they put them in fancy holders, they wear them with pride, they keep them safe on their person and they always make sure they never lose them. Kaeyaâs is clipped haphazardly onto his belt, and the holder he got for it is chipped and weathered, missing half of its wings and heâs pretty sure Kaeya got it (the holder) from a supermarket from the nearby city. It looks like itâs made of nickel, and if it could leave an impression on such a holy gem, the pale blue would be turning green in some places.
âYeah, well,â Kaeya already sounds tired of this conversation.
âI mean itâ every vision is a gift from above. It means youâre blessed. It meansââ
âWell, if it were capable of doing more than thisââ Kaeyaâs hand goes up to grip the lock holding together the fence, letting it freeze and shatter in his grasp, ââ I would hold more reverence for it. As it stands, itâs a fancy lockpick.â
âYou were born in the wrong era,â Zhongliâs mild scoff is audible, Kaeya clearly someone heâs both comfortable with but doesnât hold his tongue around. âIf you had a swordââ
âI donât.â
âYou could do fantastic thingsâ remarkable acts of showmanship, feats of power and displays ofââ
âDoubt our friends in the warehouse are going to be impressed by me showing off some snowflakes, or you throwing a meteor on top of the hostages,â Kaeya pats the gun strapped to his thigh in its holster, a Beretta 92, and grins. âAs it stands, my pistol works a lot better than my shiny rock does.â
The skyline flickers with projected ads that dim the stars, welcoming space ships in from distant corners of the solar system. Kaeya doesnât wander beyond Liyue, but itâs nice to know thereâs more out there. The overlaying echoes of voices talking over one another becomes the backdrop of the future crime scene.
âHow much is Tartaglia again?â Kaeya whispers, walking a bit slower to mask the sound of his footsteps.
â6,000,000 Mora. Donât mess this one up. We need that money for repairs.â
âHmm⌠kinda low for a Harbinger, donât you think?â
âHeâs the youngest. Means heâs worth a little less, but heâs no less of a pain in the ass.â
âI donât think Iâve heard you swear since we started working together.â
âSpecial bounty, special occasion.â
Kaeya puts his back to the wall of the warehouse. The night helps mask him from the lookout watching to make sure no one gets in, but this is where Zhongli typically provides backup and Kaeya gets the job done.
â
Teyvat is a solar system.
Natlan, the planet closest to the sun, is inhabitable. Sumeru is the most easily visible from Liyue, and despite its initially unlivable conditions, was terraformed into a thriving population. Liyue is the blue dot where humans originated, and Mondstadt is the windy planet next to it that was terraformed sometime in the 21st century. After that is an asteroid belt, the massive planet of Inazuma and its many moons, the blue-ringed Fontaine, and the chilly, distant Snezhnaya.
The seven planets were named after the seven nations on Liyueâ which once went by Teyvat. Itâs a little confusing, but things change when you move out into the stars. Communities both condense and expand, the world is no longer the world, but space, infinite, ever growing, with new, deeper reaches to find. Some things, though, donât change. With new technological advancements in science and industry come new ways to exploit it, new ways to turn towards a life of crime, new territories with new laws and new ways to break them.
And so, the origin of the humble bounty hunter starts there.
â
Kaeya met Zhongli sometime after he left the Khaenriâan branch of the Abyss Order.
Named after a legendary planet that was said to have been destroyed by a comet, the 8th in the system, purported to have an Atlantis-like advanced civilization of aliens or humans (no one can seem to come to a consensus), the Abyss Order is a crime organization operating out of Mondstadt. He doesnât tell anyone what happened there, but Zhongli found him, half-dead on a satellite orbiting Liyue and patched him up. He told Kaeya he was a bounty hunter, and that his line of work is dangerous.
Kaeya decided to repay the favor by accompanying him on one bountyâŚ
Which became two, which became fourâŚ
Until now.
Kaeya knows better than to shoot the lookout. Guyâs just doing his job, and his disregard for life isnât so strong yet that heâll kill someone for the crime of being Fatui, even if his brother will.
âWe can make you talk, you knowâ!â A jovial, almost boyish sounding voice calls out inside. âI wouldnât prolong this any longer thanâŚâ
âFuckâŚâ A raspy voice responds, âYou.â
â⌠ah, well, I tried. Bring me the pliersââ
The screams are enough that the Harbinger doesnât notice his lookout has gone missing, followed by two more guards. By the time he notices something is wrong, really wrongâ a chair is flying towards his head, and one very fierce bounty hunter comes after it.
âHey now,â Tartaglia begins, evading each punch and kick Kaeya sends his way. âMy bounty says to bring me back alive.â
âUnconscious is still alive,â Kaeya responds, dropping down to sweep him off his feet with a low kick, and Tartaglia goes down, but his hand immediately reaches for his pocketâ a drug. He bites into it, this vial-looking thing, and immediately, Kaeya is charged into a bunch of wooden boxes.
âShitâ!â He gasps.
Tartaglia will dance with him properly, now. The drug is experimental, it augments fighting abilities. Kaeya steps back, dizzied, wondering if now is a good time to use that useless hunk of rock on his belt. When he catches his hand, he coats it in frost with his palm, and Tartaglia reels back in pain.
He realizes that Kaeyaâs hands are dangerous, and he needs to go on the offensive to strike something elseâ his stomach, his face, his groinâ whatever works, but Kaeya caught him off guard. With that icy grasp, the other fist comes up and sucker-punches Tartaglia in the stomach, hardened with frost. Itâs a race to see who can knock out the other first now, andâ
Kaeya wins it.

Loving this au â¤ď¸ đ đ
Options and ideas: if Tim is au Danny, what if Jazz was stolen away as a child,(maybe by croc? Waylon deserves a feral redhead kiddo) gave the drake parents some attachment issues (worse than their existing ones because if this is au jack & Maddie they were already nearly nonexistent parents in the first place)
Tim doesn't know he's got an older sister out there, feral as she is, but Danny's doing great as an older brother, within the first week their cooking options expand to adding chicken to the boxed Mac & cheese, and if they're feeling fancy they bake some panko on top for that extra pizzazz.
Danny's more stressed than jazz about keeping his new brother alive, but hey, metas are a thing in this universe so he's not being hunted, and invisibility makes it super easy for him & Timbers to get great shots of the bats.
Danny does teach him self defense & Tim helps him better control his strength over time.
The magic lessons he had with pandora are rubbing off on Tim super well, & the infinite realms are a pretty great power source to draw from, and Danny, ancient of space, may have accidentally made Tim a warlock patron pact woops. Tim's magic is a bit Eldritch from this, but the star effects in his spells are cool, and Danny gifted him a really cool space hoodie for his birthday which maybe accidentally sealed the pact. Not like Danny noticed the power draw & Tim's picking up the whole magic thing super well.
The one time the drake parents meet Danny before rushing off to another event/gala/dig they were heading to they just assumed he was the babysitter of the month.
When Jason dies, Danny feels him come back & snatches him before the league does. His memory is a bit spotty & is now a new older brother Jay, Tim figured out his identity & they're helping, but both of our boys are forgetful and absolute haven't told Bruce or Dick that Jason's alive. Danny did another oops and finished Jason's core development by adopting him. He's like, 1/4 halfa and is basically super strong & durable and got tbe invisibility, but doesn't get the rest of the powers.
Tim teaches him some magic to help, Tim is very good at space warping & likes to teleport places all the time, having what's basically a God of space for an older brother helps a bit (a lot).
Bats does need a Robin, and so Danny and Tim voluntold Bruce that they're helping out temporarily. There are many smug smirks from Danny at Tim's slight hyper nature. They definitely hide the magic from Bruce, but what's this second vigilante group doing in crime alley? Magic in gotham? Bruce is gently told to leave it alone (beat over the head with the Alfred disappointed glare) until he cedes the territory to the Ravens (Tim tried for drakes, got shot down by Jason and Danny, Jason tried for a red-hood crime lord theme to piss off joker&bruce, Danny shot that down because his Obsession is protection not the joker or daddy issues, kthanx, and Danny dove into the birds and crime lord theme for his brothers so now there's a murder of ravens. They work in pairs & as huginn and muninn swapping who's under which name every few days for funsies.)
Their "nemesis" after joker takes a bad fall down some stairs into a pit of spikes is Waylon & his daughter, they're very civil about it & it's mainly Tim & Jazz getting into play fights (except not?) While Danny, Jason, and Waylon talk shop like dads at a barbecue. I feel like au!Jazz has cropped short hair, a feral gleam in her eye, or had the meta gene in this universe that awakened due to some trauma of her kidnapping/accidental baby acquisition by Waylon & so she's a very fluffy wolf-girl. Waylon approves of munching on enemies bones & a 7 foot wolf child is easier to take care of than he expected after all.
Prompt 02: Timâs Birthday Present
Tim sat in his empty house at the empty dining table. The table was actually quite large; it had enough seats to sit at least 15 people. But there was just Tim there.Â
His parents had promised and sworn up and down that they would come back in time for his birthday. He had everything planned out. He picked out the birthday cake, put on the candles, decorated, ordered his parents' favorite foods, his parents' favorite movie for movie night, popcorn the likes. But that morning, just when Tim was double checking to make sure everything was ready for the most perfect birthday ever, his parents had called to tell him that something really important had come up, and they wouldnât be able to make it. Tim figured it was better than last year, at least they called this time.Â
Tim stared down at the cake, the candles lit. He had heard online that people would make wishes on their birthday cake and blow it out. Tim thought that was a weird thing to do, but it wouldnât hurt to try.Â
What should he wish for? It would have to be something special that he doesnât already have. Tim thought for a long moment, the candles bleeding into the frosting of the cake.Â
A brother.Â
Tim closed his eyes and put his hands together like heâs seen the other children to do in the cartoons. And Tim wished for a big brother. When he finally wished hard enough (whatever that meant) he opened his eyes and blew out what was left of the candles.Â
Tim waited. What exactly was he supposed to do now? In the cartoons, everyone would celebrate and cheer and the birthday boy would open his presents. There wasnât anyone to cheer for Tim, or any presents for him to open.Â
Suddenly the house shook, and the loud sound of a crash sound came from the backyard. Quickly, Tim did the sensible thing and go check out what the noise was. That's what the characters always did in horror movies.Â
In Timâs backyard, there was what looked like a weird space ship that had crashed into his backyard. There wasnât any fire or anything, but the spaceship looked pretty wrecked. Getting closer, Tim could vaguely make out that someone was inside the spaceship. Looking around, he saw what looked like maybe the handle. Tim couldnât really tell.Â
When Tim put his hand on it and tried to open it, something poked out mechanically and pricked his finger. He flinched back instinctively, caressing his finger tip.
âRecognized: Danny Fenton. System Override.â A robotic lady spoke. Who is Danny Fenton? As if to answer him, the space ship opened its hatch, and inside was an unconscious black haired teenager. âSystem Malfunctioning. Please Assis-â The robotic voice spoke again, before getting cut off as if the power had died.Â
Suddenly, Tim remembered his wish. A big brother.Â
This was Danny Fenton, and he was supposed to be Timâs big brother
----
When Danny woke up, he found himself in a very soft plush something. Something that definitely wasnât the Spector Speeder. Alarmed, he sat up quickly to find that he didnât recognize where he was at all. He also didnât recognize the weird kid that was staging at him from two feet away.Â
âHi, Iâm Tim. Timothy Drake.â The boy introduced himself almost business like.Â
âUh, hi Tim.â Danny responded awkwardly. âYou got any idea where I am?â Danny sat up properly, moving the blanket (?) off of him and turned to face the weird and kinda creepy kid.Â
âYouâre in Drake Manor. Which is where I live.â He answered again.Â
âOkâŚayâ Danny nodded thoughtfully. âAny idea how I got here?â Truthfully, Danny hadnât really been expecting an answer, but he still got one.Â
âBecause I made a birthday wish to have a big brother.â He answered in the same way he had answered the other question, very matter-of-factly.Â
âOk- Wait. What?â Danny asked, doing a double take at Tim.Â
âYouâre supposed to be my big brother, right?â Tim was starting to look a little hesitant, and as weirded out as Danny felt he couldnât help but feel bad about the whole situation.Â
âWhere are your parents, Tim?âÂ
âThere not home, because they had really important things to do for work.âÂ
Danny nodded. âDo you know when theyâll be back?âÂ
Tim shook his head. âThey were supposed to come back today, because itâs my birthday. But they said they couldnât make it.âÂ
Well, shit. Didnât that sound awfully like Dannyâs birthdays before he had given up on his parents showing up. At least he had Jazz. This kid looked like he was alone.Â
Not liking the silence, Tim started fidgeting again. âSo, are you gonna be my brother, then?âÂ
And what was Danny supposed to say, No? Besides, if he was really causing problems being in this random universe, then Clockwork would figure it out.Â
Bonus:Â
Danny sat at Timâs dinner table, the kid looking at him radiating in excitement, each with a plate of stupid expensive pasta in front of them. âYou said your name was Tim, right?â Danny started thoughtfully. Tim nodded, drinking up everything Danny said. âWell, first course of action as you, big brother. I need to give you a nickname.âÂ
Timâs eyes sparkled at the prospect. âLike what?â
Danny tapped his chin exaggeratedly, âHm⌠Tim, Tim.â Turing the name around while he absentmindedly twirled his fork between his fingers, Danny wondered what he should come up with. Suddenly, in a misplaced strength, Dannyâs fork flew out of his hand.Â
Before Danny could even say anything, âIâll get you a new one!â Tim offered quickly. Getting up from his chair, his foot got tangled behind the leg of the chair and Tim fell quietly on the floor with an oof.Â
Danny laughed at him. âYou okay, Timbers?â He asked, getting up to check on the boy.Â
âYeah, I like Timbers.â Tim said, a bright smile on his face despite the blossoming bruise on his arm.

((Set in Victorian-era London...))
The thronging masses who occupied the city of London (and its Greater Area), much like the Thames River, so thick with thingsâthe best of which was sedimentâhad an ebb and flow. Every day there were births, deaths, newcomers, and those lucky enough to be able to flee the soot-damp city when its experiences were not to their satisfaction. Still, somehow, with all its hum and thrum, the City built on blood and bone and water-saturated earth continued to expandâwithin the last ten years alone, the population had swelled to over five million human inhabitants.Â
If India was the âcrown jewelâ of the British Empire, then London was the crown itself; a shifting, adapting framework meant to prop up, display, and manage the supposed superiority and authority of that Empire. In truth, however, with its fine marble monumentsâwhite stone spires and carved stately edifices reaching to the sky, meant to distract visitors and residents alike, and meant to reassure, with a gleaming smile, that London was a place of civility and gentility and all the likeâit was far less like a crown, and much, much more like a hungry mouth.Â
Behind the polished facades and centuries of stacked brick, stone and mortar, ever changing and ever building higher and broader, there sat⌠everything else: Slums of packed human misery, the undesirables, the working poor, the homeless, the sick and dying. There were, of course, spaces between these two intertwined worldsâcities are a spectrum of class, wealth, and entitlement. There were those who were entitled to basic human needs like decent food, fresh clothes, a safe place to rest their head but did not have those thingsâthere were those that did, provided they were able to continue giving service to Queen and Country and Civilized Society with their laborâand there were those that had all these things but merely siphoned the gains of others into their own coffers, and rather than seeking recognition of their entitlement to dignity, were simplyâŚÂ entitled.Â
It would be all too easy to wave away the complexities of this old, layered human society and to ignore the gaping maw for what it really was: A black pit, a hole at the center of everythingâor so the Powers That Be wanted to believeâa focal point for the Empireâs greed, power, corruption, gasping wide from the tainted earth to draw into itself the wealth, resources, sanctity that rightfully belonged to others.Â
From all corners of the world, this hole, this mill of blood and grist, fed itself insatiably with tendrils of industry, commerce, might and power. Unsated and unchecked ambition reached out from its core like a rot, a centuries-old blight of the industrial enthralled woven into the fabric of the formerly agrarian British Isles. This thirsty hole intended only to suck and slurp every last drop of green and good and send its initquities across the oceans to do more of the same. But if it was not a mouth, widening and swallowing all it could, it was a parasite, fastened to the wetlands, fancying itself a bastion of glorious human achievement and it had come to thoroughly believe its own lie.
This contradictory mass of history and culture and people was knitted, packed, and dressed neatly in the enigmatic and human form of Lord Jack Lucius Kirkland.Â
The Ancient City, containing millions of human livesâinnocent and otherwiseâbuilt atop blood and boneâand carefully crafted and polished, hewn to fit the Empireâs desired imageâwas coalesced into a Man of shadow, of smoke, of death and rebirth, of the ever-changing tides of time and the flow of the Thames River. He had been born of a Roman legionnaire and a Briton woman, then left as a babe at the threshold of those who worshipped Jupiter, Diana and Saturn to be raised and bound and forever tied to this place. Heâd been given another nameâone he has long since forgottenâand he had grown at first like a normal boy into his teenaged years, sprouted tall and healthy with olive brown skin and thick, black hair, eyes grey as often were the skies aboveâand then he just⌠stopped. And it was clear he was different, an acolyte of cult rituals and ceremony and gifted in ways that made others fear him. Umbra Hominis, the Shadow of Man, was the first alternative moniker he can remember ever having liked, and so of course, it stuck.
One might think that it was the rituals of the pagans that had bound this child to his fate, but that was simply not the case. It was not actually any human ritual that had tied flesh and bone, sinew and veins and all between. It was just⌠how he was, knit in the womb and born woven into shade, a thing meant to eternally serve at the behest of the dark and watery earth.Â
And ohâ he really thought he had served it well, with all the weight of the power and wealth that the Empire had afforded him. But the cries of ghosts, of the neglected dead, hundreds, thousands brought into the world as fodder to be fed to the gaping hole of the Empire, said otherwise.

Things I love about Animorphs:
Back in the 70s, Elfangor had a human friend named Bill who he introduced andalite technology to. Bill ended up expanding upon this technology to invent something that would become very important to human civilization. Hint: It's supposed to be Bill Gates with Windows.
The escargot scene that was only in the TV show. Jake goes for dinner at a fancy restaurant with his brother, their dad, and "Victor Trent." Jake is offered escargot by his dad (a free human, unaware of the invasion) and Jake gladly takes it since he's so hungry, even snails look delicious. Unfortunately for the yeerks inside "Victor" and Tom's heads, escargot looks like dead, cooked yeerks and Jake is intentionally taking his time by savouring every nibble.
Ax uses â¨magic⨠to transform Marco's Blockbuster card into a universal keycard for unlocking any electronically locked door. The homoeroticism of "Jake, rub it on my fur" and Jake choosing specifically to rub it on Ax's chest is just *chef's kiss*. Ax instantly morphs human, with no evidence of an actual morph transition, for no in-universe reason in the middle of the scene.
Elfangor is Ax's brother as well as Tobias' dad. This means that Ax is Tobias' uncle. Some people ship Ax with Marco, which would make Marco ALSO Tobias' uncle in the version of events where Marco and Ax got married. Tobias is a nothlit, so he's technically a red-tailed hawk despite being born to a human mother and an andalite father.
Thousands of years ago, a species known as the pemalites came to Earth. They were wolf-like bipeds and when they met Earth's canines, the pemalites modified the canines' personalities to be friendly. Basically, humans keep dogs around because of aliens.
As of the 1990s, all that is left on Earth of the pemalites are a race of androids that they made in their own image, called the chee, which can disguise themselves as different species using holograms. The kids have a classmate named Erek, and part of how they figure out that he's secretly a robot dog is when Erek runs out into the street to stop a dog from being hit by a car. The front of the car is destroyed but Erek is unscathed, like there wouldn't be fucking WITNESSES.
Cassie is the kindest person in the main bunch. She helps her mom rehabilitate wildlife and is always the first to ask if a decision the Animorphs are making is ethical. She also enjoys listening to Nine Inch Nails.
Rachel's family learns about the aliens. Her younger siblings believe Ax to be a "Pokey-Man" and insist that they must train him. (My friend who loves PokĂŠmon but had never seen an andalite was able to pretty accurately guess which PokĂŠmon Ax would look like the most. Blue, four legs, bladed tail. Weirdly, or maybe not weirdly, Luxray did not exist when the books were still being released.)
Andalites don't have mouths on their faces and eat through the bottoms of their feet, so they become very overwhelmed and lose self-control when eating in a form with a sense of taste. In one book, Ax goes to the mall as a human and discovers that the cinnamon bun place in the food court throws out day-old bunZUH, so the employees let him eat unlimited day-olds, as they would just go in the garbage anyway. Ax eats himself ill, right there in public.
The andalites have the law of Seerow's Kindness, since the reason for the universe-wide invasion of the yeerks is due to an andalite named Seerow teaching them how to fly spaceships. Because of Seerow, it is highly illegal for andalites to share their own technology with other species as a precaution against any other species abusing andalite tech. Andalites are, however, willing to trade their technology with humans in exchange for Krispy Kreme stores located on the andalite home planet.

mari especially. everybody thinks mari is perfect but she is not and the idolopization is killing her!!!!! itâs like. mari loves her baby brother! she really does. sunny is the world to her and she wouldnât give him up for anything. and she hates it when people call him weird or freaky or that awful word that starts with an r.
if you have little siblings you know what itâs like to constantly be followed by them. no matter how much you love them, it starts wearing on you after a while. you want to scream, i have my own life!!! go away!!!
but mari is too much of a saint for that, right? she doesnât mind when sunny follows her wherever she goes. even when she finally makes a friend who she doesnât have to be a saint around, sunnyâs still following her. and she doesnât have to be a saint for hero, but she does for sunny.
so itâs her and hero and her third-wheel little brother. which is fine! itâs fine. she loves sunny and she loves hero (loves them in altogether different ways but she probably shouldnât bring that up around sunny, heâs just a little kid after all). then sunny and heroâs little brother kel become friends. and thatâs great too! sunnyâs opening up, heâs expanding.
right?
kel needs hero just as much as sunny needs mari. and now theyâre never alone. and itâs okay! mari doesnât mind, because sheâs mari and sheâs too too too perfect for that. itâs whatever, really! (at least sunny leaves her alone during piano practices. she says she needs to focus and he obliges. even if he leans against the door the entire time, humming along off-key to the songs she plays.)
then kel and sunny find another little girl, somebody their age, and hero gets that look in his eye where he fancies himself a hero who needs to save every last civilian at the cost of his life. so aubrey is there. and itâs fine. itâs fine itâs fine itâs fine. mari doesnât mind at all!
aubrey brings another boy, a boy named basil, who is like a wet-eyed rabbit with a quivering nose and who cannot be left alone. so here mari is with the boy she thinks she loves, and her little brother and his, and two kids. and everybody needs her so desperately.
sunny is lonely sometimes because his parents donât love him as much as they love mari (they say otherwise but itâs true), and hero is lonely sometimes because his parents want him to be a hero and a doctor and a perfect perfect perfect older brother (she can relate), and kel is lonely sometimes because he thinks he needs to be always hapoy to be loved (she can relate to that too), and aubrey is lonely sometimes because her dad hates her and her mom is altogether ambivalent (sometimes mari is jealous of her as awful as it is), and basil is lonely sometimes because his parents abandoned him to live with his grandma in a town faraway from civilization (maybe if they lived in the city sunny would have more friends and mari would finally get respite).
she loves them all but what she doesnât love is the feeling of constantly being needed. why do people always need her?
and sunny takes up the violin and even piano isnât alone anymore
so if heâs going to invade her last safe space he at least needs to do it right
and she yells at him for breaking the violin (for having the courage to speak for himself even if itâs not with his voice)
and then she dies. and she dies perfect. an idol. a saint. a goddess.

noun
a woman with whom one is in love or has intimate relations.
ATTEMPT ZERO
After years of being the Fire Lord, Zuko had come to realize the job was pretty basic if you thought about it long enough. There were just a few major things to deal with. First, thereâs the internal relations, like the civil wars and uprising he deal with at the start of his reign because people disliked his ways. Then thereâs the external relations, Zuko worked alongside Aang to repair those, helping the Southern Water Tribe rebuild itself from the ground up, and hosting meetings between the nations, friendly and work related. Those are the more diplomatic aspects of the job, and sadly, even as a ruler who sought to end a war, there was still violence in the world.Â
When Aang and the rest of Team Avatar ended the One Hundred Year War, that only exposed a variety of other problems within the world, problems that the team seeked to end. There were people out there who disliked this line of thinking, and similarly wanted it to end, but ending the lives of Team Avatar.
Zuko was used to the death threats, and the assassination attempts. Heâd had a security detail in place to ensure he lived to rule his nation, this was especially necessary since he lacked an heir and the only other people eligible for the throne were an old man who ran a tea shop and a psychopathic teenage girl in a mental institution. This is where the social aspect of the job came in, the part that Zuko had never been good at. The Galas and the girls who threw themselves at him, the nobility of all nations that approached him offering their childrenâs hand in marriage. Zuko was an enigma, a young and powerful bachelor, and now all the nobles with children were lining up for a minute alone with him to try and sell their own kids.
It disgusted him. The way they treated their children like cattle reminded Zuko of his own father, how willing he was to get rid of Zuko since he had a replacement on standby. Though, Zuko sincerely doubted he ever wouldâve gotten the throne if Ozai had a choice, even if he hadnât been banished.Â
Alas, even Zuko could recognize the urgency of it, the death threats werenât letting up, and the assassination attempts were only getting more and more elaborate, leaving Zuko wondering when theyâd no longer be attempts. He needed and heir, or at least a wife who could rule alongside him and take over entirely in the event of his death.
The problem was, he didnât want this.
He was in a unique position, where the person he married would have an immense effect on society, on politics. If it was an Earth Kingdom girl, then maybe the years of violence against their people could be mended sooner, and they could begin working together to combat a variety of issues. If he ends up with a Fire Nation girl, it could be viewed as strengthening the traditional ideals of Fire Nation independence and sovereignty because the Fire Nation is âsupreme.â
Dating was political now and he hated it. It wasnât like Zuko wanted to be alone, itâs just that now everything mattered far more than it used to. Of course, even as a prince it had been the same, but now that he was the Fire Lord, things seemed to be ten times worse. Perhaps it was excessive but Zuko couldnât help but feel paranoid whenever a new person entered his life, he couldnât help but assume that they were just using him for some other agenda.
Of course, his friends had tried to assure him this wasnât always the case, and theyâd even made attempts to set him up with girls. All of which had failed. Zuko knew he wasnât an easy person, much less an easy person to date. As Fire Lord, a lot of his time was taken up by meetings, and diplomatic missions, and not-so-diplomatic missions alongside Team Avatar. That and he was rather awkward when it came down to most social interactions, though heâd improved over time, especially as the ruler of a nation, his speeches were elegant and so was the way he negotiated with other kingdoms.Â
And yet he struggled to talk to strangers.
Iroh seemed to be tired of this as well, heâd sent Zuko several letters in regards to his lack of romance, insisting that he was a âhandsome young manâ that had âlots of potentialâ and he was âwastingâ his prime with so much work. Zuko didnât consider managing a country as a waste, though he understood where Iroh was coming from, Zuko probably shouldâve been spending time with friends, going to clubs. Not saving the world.
Regardless, there wasnât much he could do about, he didnât have time for dating, and Zuko wasnât willing to compromise his morals and beliefs just for an heir in the event that he got brutally murdered. He refused to raise a child just for that purpose. He learnt the hard way that you should only have kids if you intend to cherish them. And the idea of marrying someone just to strengthen his nation felt wrong, though he could see the benefits.
God, he hated being Fire Lord sometimes.
On the other hand, Y/N L/N liked her job. Amongst the nobility of the Earth Kingdom, she was a rather famous woman, Y/N had brought together some of the most powerful couples in the country. A lot of people owed her favors, and the money that came with the job was more than satisfactory. If Y/N had to guess, she was one of the richest people in the kingdom, considering how much people were willing to pay to fine âthe one.â Her business had been rather successful since sheâd gotten renowned in the inner ring of the city, and now, Y/N was considering expansion, to the Fire Nation. The borders had long since reopened, when the new Fire Lord came into power.
A whole new set of nobles for her to profit from.Â
Sheâd decided to head to a high end tea shop in celebration of her choice to expand her business. Y/N had heard it was only for the best, since the tea shop served the best. One of her clients had insisted that someone of her esteem try the tea there, given that she was the best in her own profession.
So, here she was. It was a nice place, she wouldnât deny, and Y/N had heard of the shop before. The Jasmine Dragon, run by some old guy whoâd appeared in Ba Sing Se just before the war ended with some major talent when it came to brewing tea. The interior was fancy, but not excessive, several people were already seated within. Y/N even recognized one of the couples there, who waved at her enthusiastically, âhello! Lady L/N, how lovely to see you!â One of them called out.
Y/N smiled at them, âhow are you two?â
The other beamed at her as she responded, âoh weâre just lovely! Preparing our wedding invitations and one of them has your name on it.â This wasnât abnormal, most of the couples sheâd brought together attributed their love to her. In actuality, Y/N found that if you found two people with compatible personalities, then theyâd work things out on their own. All she did was introduce them.Â
âIâm excited!â Y/N assured, moving past their table, ânow if youâll excuse me, Iâd like to try this famous tea. But, Iâm looking forward to the invite.âÂ
The pair nodded, before returning their attention the friends seated across from them, and Y/N made her way to the front of the shop, bag of coins in hand. An older man stood behind the counter, a smile on his face as he brought his attention to her, âwhat can I get you today Miss...â
âY/N. Y/N L/N.â She replied, small smile on her face as she looked at the menu, âwhatâs your name?â Y/N asked, meeting his eyes to see the flicker of recognition within them before returning her gaze to the menu.
He nods slowly, âIâm Iroh, and youâre a matchmaker, no?â Heâd recognized the name, her business had begun gaining traction amongst the nobility of the Earth Kingdom shortly after the war, and she was one of the most sought after matchmakers in the nation. Iroh himself had looked into her business, seeing as his nephew was yet to find love in his chaotic lifetstyle.Â
Y/N smiled at him as she nodded, âindeed.â She placed the menu down, âany suggestions?â
âPerhaps, Jasmine tea?â He suggested.
Y/N nodded, âsounds good.â She places extends a hand with coins, dropping them into his palm, âso are you looking for love?â Though she was certainly famous for her skills, Y/N tended to work behind the scenes, and she was surprised to find this man recognized her.
A small laughed escaped him at her words as he shook his head, âno. I believe it is a little too late for that.â He was working on her tea beyond the counter, and Y/N began to wonder how he was steaming the tea pot when she noticed there was no stove beside him.
âDonât say that! You seem like a fine man that anyone woman would want.â Y/N assured, though she now wondered why exactly this man knew who she was in the first place. It was rare for those outside of nobility to know who she was.
Turning around, his hand pressed to the pot that Y/N was positive had to have been burning his hand in some way, âoh, youâre too kind.â He replies, a small smile on his face as he poured a bit into a cup, âI was looking to help my nephew find love actually.âÂ
âReally, now?â Firebending, that was the only explanation for the way this man was handling the tea. âI was looking to expand my business to the Fire Nation, perhaps I could help him out.â He didnât hold himself the way most Earth Kingdom citizens did, and coupled with the possible Firebending, he was likely from the Fire Nation.
Iroh raises a brow at this, âwhat gave me away?â He stirs the tea a few times, before placing it on the counter for her to take.Â
Y/N shrugs, âitâs my job to know people well enough that I can find them a match.â Taking a sip of her tea, she smiles, âso this nephew of yours. He wouldnât happen to nobility, would he?â
He laughs at this, pouring himself a cup of tea as well as he sighs, âactually, he is nobility. In a way.â
Now Y/N did not expect the nobility Iroh spoke of the be the nobility. As in the Fire Lord, the actual ruler of the entire nation, though this would certainly be great for business. Once the world hears of how Y/N found the Fire Lord, someone who had been notably difficult to woo apparently, a match, her business will be set.Â
âIsnât this exciting, guys?â Y/N exclaimed, looking to her assistants, they were both on the younger side, Marcella and Evelyn. Sheâd brought them along since this would definitely be a valuable learning experience, and Y/N figured sheâd need a lot of help if the Fire Lord was as difficult as they made him out to be. That and Y/N didnât want to leave them alone in the Earth Kingdom, both of them had been orphaned at a young age. Y/N couldnât help but relate to them, so when sheâd come upon her newfound wealth, brought about by her job as a matchmaker, sheâd taken the pair under her wing.Â
With a bag thrown over her shoulder, Evelyn simply nodded while Marcella exclaimed, âyes! Iâve always wanted to see the Fire Nation. Do you think we could find a client in one of the Water Tribes next?âÂ
Y/N couldnât help but smile at the young girlâs excitement, âif this goes well? Weâll be able to find clients anywhere.â She wasnât wrong, Y/N had never had the opportunity to work with the actual Earth King, the true ruler of the nation. Now she was working with the ruler of a nation sheâd never stepped foot in, entirely new customs and traditions to research, a new social structure, new everything.
What a fun challenge.
With a smile on her face, Y/N followed closely behind Iroh, the palace was stunning, she couldnât deny it. And compared to the crumbling infrastructure of the lower rings of cities like Ba Sing Se, Fire Nation cities were prospering Fire Lord Zukoâs rule. From what sheâd heard, things werenât always this way.
âY/N and I are going to wait here,â he gestured to the open space before them, dozens of paintings within it, âthese two will take you to your rooms.â He explained to the pair of young girls, nodding to the servants beside them, who began to guide the young girls away.
Y/Nâs eyes found their way to the paintings, the newest one being of the current Fire Lord, Zuko himself. She wondered how accurate the painting was, and seeing as she would be meeting him soon, Y/N figured sheâd find out as she sighed, turning to Iroh, âso how does the original heir to the throne become the owner of an infamous tea shop?âÂ
Iroh smiles to himself at her words, âage brings wisdom. And tea is a nice substitute for alcohol.â He jokes, though Y/N can see the pain in his eyes, along with admiration as he stares at Zukoâs portrait alongside her.
âUncle!â A voice exclaimed, joy clear in his voice as he called out. Y/N watched as Iroh spun around, a broad smile on his face as he moved forwards to embrace the person.
He looked better in person, Y/N quickly decided, though the portrait did its job just as well. She wouldnât deny he was attractive, but she already knew looks werenât the issue. Iroh had informed her of the situation, Zukoâs constant rejection of any and every single person that approached him, and the stress he experienced because of the politics of it all.
âNephew, it is good to see you,â Iroh said, releasing him from the hug, âhow are you?â Initially he seemed fairly comfortable at the sight of just his Uncle, but as the Fire Lordâs body seemed to stiffen, Y/N realized sheâd been spotted.
So, he wasnât comfortable with strangers, âIâm alright Uncle... who is this?â He asked. There was an edge to his voice as he spoke, sizing Y/N up, not in the way you did for someone you were attracted to, but for an enemy.
Uncomfortable with new people, clear trust issues, and his mind was always alert. Sheâd have to write these things down and take them into consideration prior to finding him a potential partner. Though it was starting to look like he was completely unaware of her purpose there as she extended her hand out to him, âY/N L/N. Professional matchmaker.â She explained with a bright smile, though, based off his personality, that would likely ward him off more.
He was polite though, shaking her hand despite his clear suspicions of her, âZuko.â Y/N couldnât help but raise a brow at this, he hadnât mentioned his title in his introduction. Zuko turned to his Uncle, brows furrowing as he said, âyou hired a professional matchmaker?â
With a shrug Iroh responded, âwe met by chance! So, it must be destiny.â
Zuko gives him a tight lipped smile, nodding slowly before returning his attention to Y/N who stood away from the pair, examining the decor of the palace. It was minimalistic, truly basic if she was honest, despite the clear amount of riches they possessed, it lacked evidence of them. Bringing her eyes back to him, he spoke, âyou donât need to be here. You can receive your pay, but I personally see no purpose for a matchmaker.â
Iroh frowned at his words, âZuko, you need to give it a chance! Unlike all those ladies who keep throwing themselves at you. Besides, she seems rather good at her job.â His gaze was on his nephew as he sighed, giving Y/N an apologetic look that she simply waved off.
âOh, itâs fine. It just wonât be for long.â Zuko raised a brow at her words, and Y/N watched his feet shifted, âno need to prepare for a fight, your majesty.â She hummed, rolling her neck, in the corner of her eye she could see shock flash in his own. âYou see, as a matchmaker I do several things, including developing a little... profile of my clients. Now we just met but I can already tell you a variety of things about you thatâs making your love life rather trivial.â Even before she had to develop the profiles professionally, in the lower rings of Ba Sing Se, being capable of reading others was a necessary skill.
Zukoâs eyes narrowed at her, âand what have you determined, in the very short time weâve known each other.â
A small laugh escaped her as she extended her arms and cracked her knuckles, âwell. You have major trust issues, which is why you are desperately trying to keep me at arms length. Thatâs one reason why you have yet to find someone.â Turning her attention to the decor of the large room, Y/N closed her eyes and inhaled deeply. âGiven the lack of interior design, I would say youâre struggling with social aspects of your job, and you need a partner. One that I can help you find.âÂ
âSee! I told you sheâs good at what she does.â Iroh exclaimed, moving forward to clap a hand onto Y/Nâs shoulder, much to Zukoâs dismay.Â
Y/N gave the older man a small smile before looking back to Zuko, who eyed her wearily, âyou keep avoiding the portrait of your father. But you canât bring yourself to take it down.â She said, and Y/N could practically feel the tension building with each word. âHeâs one of the reasons youâve yet to find a lover-â
âBecause he gave me the scar?âÂ
Y/N paused, brows furrowing at his words, her eyes found his, âIâm sorry, was that a joke?â She asked, and Iroh stared between the two, amused. âYouâre actually rather attractive, which is why I know this is a personality thing. Probably tired of the whole fancy court thing they have going on here, which Iâm going to need to research...â Y/N pursed her lips, failing to notice the clear shock on Zukoâs face at her comment, and red flushing his cheeks. Waving off her thoughts, she looked back to him, âanyways. My assistants shouldâve already cleared out about an hour in your schedule each day for our sessions. Iâm going to be asking you some very personal questions. So, be ready!âÂ
And with that, Y/N waved to the two, bowing rather questionably shortly after, before heading off in the direction sheâd seen Marcella and Evelyn go in. Effectively leaving behind a baffled Zuko, and a rather satisfied Iroh, who began to laugh at Zukoâs reaction. âI really like her, quite the character she has.âÂ
âYeah, quite the character.â He brought a hand to his temple, âis this really necessary, Uncle?âÂ
Iroh simply sighed, looking to his nephew, âwhether you want to admit it or not, she was right. Ruling a nation is difficult, and ruling it alone is even harder.â A small huff of laughter escaped Iroh, âand she figured that out by your lack of interior design!âÂ
Exhaling deeply, Zuko reminded himself that this was all part of the job, the job that consumed his entire life. The life that this girl had analyzed in a matter of moments.Â
Yeah, he wasnât looking forward to their meetings.
Though his morals and his disagreement with practically selling your own child were a major factor in his lack of a love life. There was also the simple fact that there was no love in many of the interactions he had with potential suitors, much less genuine interest. They all wanted the power he could give them should they get married.
There was also the fact that Zuko had very little relationship experience, a fact he was trying to ignore. At the end of the day, he couldnât bring himself to approach anyone, and if he did, he wouldnât know what to do. Zuko also doubted that people would act... genuine around him, especially if they knew who he was. And all he really wanted was something real, considering his entire day was surrounded by fake smiles that belonged to both him and others.
It seemed that Y/N wasnât prepared to ignore this piece of information though, since the following morning sheâd seated him down and begun to speak of it, âso. Youâve been in two relationships.â
His brows furrowed, âone actually.â He and Mai had broken up about six months into his work as Fire Lord, âMai.â
Raising a brow at him, she leaned back in the seat. Zuko couldnât help but wonder how she managed to decorate the place in such a short period of time, as he couldâve sworn there hadnât been a desk here the previous day. Then again, he couldnât remember the last time heâd toured his own palace. âWell, Iâve heard rumors of you and a Southern Water Tribe member, but Iâm not sure which one so I just-â
âOkay! Thatâs enough.â His cheeks were flushed red as he looked away.
Y/N grinned at him, leaning forwards, âthen letâs discuss Mai. You two were pretty on and off, right?âÂ
Zuko grimaced at the thought, they were. He wouldnât deny that heâd gone back to her a few times during his time as Fire Lord, âyeah.âÂ
Y/N began to write into her notebook, âtell me about her.â
âI donât see why thatâs important.â Came his response, looking at her quizzically as he frowned.
Tilting her head at him, Y/N gave Zuko a look, âcome on. Let me do my job, I need to know about her to gauge what types of personalities you like while also determining why the two of you broke it off entirely.â She placed the book down, and Zuko could very clearly see the words âcommitment issuesâ underlined. âThe goal isnât just to find you a suitable wife that can help you rule, but someone you can be happy with.â
Heâs silent for a moment, eyes on Y/N, her words seem honest. And this was her job, âshe was blunt. Honest. Kind of mean at times, but she could be sweet as well. Pretty stoic, expressing her emotions was always... difficult for her.âÂ
Y/N nodded slowly, scribbling a few more things down, âokay. And whatâs your favorite color?âÂ
âWhat type of question is that?â Zuko asked, brows furrowing in confusion.Â
Crossing her arms, Y/N shrugged, âwell. Favorite colors can tell you a lot about a person.â Came her response, âmine is green. Maybe thatâs because I associate green with the Earth Kingdom, where I lived. Or maybe itâs because I happen to like nature quite a bit.â Looking around, Zuko could see that sheâd already gotten a variety of plants native to the Fire Nation, most were succulents due to the almost year round heat.
At the mention of colors, his mind immediately went back to his first experience with the dragons, when their fire encircled him and Aang. âI.. donât know how to describe the color- colors?â Zukoâs brows drew together in thought, and Y/N looked at him.
âHow would I not understand a color?â The confusion is clear in her voice as she looks at him. Y/N can practically see the nostalgia in his eyes as he looks to the balcony.
Sighing, Zuko shifted in his seat, âthese dragons I met ended up making a circle of fire around me and there were just... so many colors. But together it was just,â he paused, searching for the right word, âbeautiful.â
Y/Nâs mouth gaped open for a moment, âyou met dragons?â She exclaimed, nearly throwing her notebook aside. Y/N had never seen such creatures, in fact, the general consensus was that they were still extinct
Zuko seemed to forget about this fact as he straightened himself, eyes meeting hers, âyou canât tell anyone about them!â He exclaimed, âthey were hunted to extinction, though I intend to outlaw such things itâs just...âÂ
She nodded in understanding, âpeople break laws.â Y/N leaned back into her seat once more, âyou owe me a dragon story.â She said, before crossing her legs in her seat and continuing, âfavorite food?â
âWell, Aang took me to Avatar Day, and they had these weird Avatar shaped dough things.â He explained, recalling the time heâd gone with Aang and the others. Apparently they used to burn his statue, but now they worship him for some reason.
Y/N brought a hand under her chin, âI have no idea what that is.â She began to scribble something down on her notepad, âbut okay.â
âWhat about you?â
Y/N hummed in response, âwhat do you mean?âÂ
Zuko felt his cheeks warm, âthis just feels like an interview.â
âProbably because it is an interview.â Y/N said, gesturing for him to elaborate.
Looking away, Zuko frowned, âitâs weird.â Sighing, he spoke once more, âso, whatâs your favorite food?âÂ
Y/N was silent for a moment, staring at Zuko, who was trying his hardest to avoid her gaze. This was a rare occurrence, seeing as most nobles were rather self-centered and liked talking about themselves. Sheâd never had a client who felt uncomfortable with this portion because it was basically a one-sided conversation. âJennamite is a good rock candy.â
Zuko turns back to her, a small laugh escaping him, âmy friends were nearly killed in Jennamite by the King of Omashu once.âÂ
âIâm sorry, what?â
ATTEMPT ONE
Y/N wouldnât deny how odd it was, to be sharing as much information as she was learning about Zuko. Sheâd never really considered just how personal some of the questions were until she found herself answering them. But, after about a month, she had assembled a pretty good array of potential suitors for Zuko. Along with a few of her own clients, Y/N had found some girls that from the Fire Nation that seemed pretty acceptable.
Thatâs what she had thought at least.
âWhat do you mean, you already rejected her?âÂ
Turns out, Zuko had met half the women, and rejected them. The other half were either from the Earth Kingdom, or yet to attend one of few Galas that Zuko hosted. Seeing as he handed off most of that work to his advisors, it was rare for him to remain at Galas for an extended period of time.Â
He grimaced at Y/Nâs words nonetheless, his Uncle had informed her of his situation, but clearly not the extent of it. âShe was more interested in her guard than me. It was a power grab her parents likely forced her into.â He remembered the girl, sheâd been kind to him, but she clearly didnât want him as much as her parents did.
His words brought about a new level of understanding for Y/N, who nodded slowly, of course it was the parents that Zuko had a problem with. It wasnât uncommon for nobles to practically throw their children at potential suitors as though theyâre a bag of coins. It was something that disgusted her as well, her job found people companions that they liked while these people simply wished for an addition to their power.
Zuko was the ultimate power grab. Y/N could only imagine how many times this had happened to him, random people heâd never met approaching him, offering their childâs hand in marriage.Â
Bringing a hand to her temple, Y/N sighed, âbut the rest are fine?âÂ
He nodded slowly, flipping through the pages he had yet to remove, Zuko skimmed what Y/N had written. Taking note of her handwriting, he wondered if sheâd written his profile like this. âYeah...â Y/N narrowed her eyes at him, and Zuko sighed, removing a few more pages from the binder sheâd presented him with.Â
Exhaling deeply, Y/N brought a hand to Zukoâs shoulder, âbe honest with me. Iâm not gonna yell at you for removing them Zuko, this is for you.â
Sometimes he forgot it was her job to be nice to him.Â
âRight.â He mumbled, trying to shake off the feeling he got as she removed her hand. âThatâs still... a lot of people. Some of which arenât even in this nation.â Zuko pointed out, a queasy feeling within him as he looked at her.
Y/N plopped down onto the couch in the common room theyâd met in, sprawling her body across it, âyouâre right, there is a lot. But,â She twisted her body so that she could see him, wiggling her brows suggestively, âitâs been a while since you hosted a Gala.âÂ
Zukoâs face dropped at her words, in his years of being Fire Lord, heâd had about three total, and hated every single one. But given how rare the Galas were, people got pretty excited when he threw them. âI hate planning those, itâs a waste of time and-âÂ
A small smile was on her face as she interrupted him, âand you suck at planning them? I can tell by the decor of your palace.â Glaring at her, Zuko watched as she shifted so that her head hung off the couch upside down, âwell. This will be the best Gala yet, youâll impress all the ladies that you canât meet in the immediate future in about...â Y/N looked to the watch on her wrist, brows furrowing, âeight months. And Iâll help you plan it, since you desperately need help-â
âAlright, I get it, Iâm horrible.â He grumbled, crossing his arms as he leaned back against his seat across from her after placing the binder on the coffee table between them. âEight months isnât a lot of time,â traditionally, Galaâs took at least a yearâs worth of planning and preparation, especially since Zuko was so busy he barely had the time to assist in the process. Eight months was no where near enough.
Y/N was still frowning at his words, âno self-deprecation.â She ordered, taking Zuko by surprise, before continuing, âregardless. Iâve planned Gala in less time with less resources. Itâll be fine.â Pursing her lips Y/N sighed, ânow we need to discuss your inability to talk to people in general due to your immense trust issues and constant battle field mentality.âÂ
Zukoâs mouth gaped open at her words, âexcuse me?â
Bringing her hands to rest on her stomach as she laid upside down, Y/N spoke, âwhen we first met you looked like you contemplated attacking me. And when you met Marcella and Evelyn, Iâve never seen someone so awkward.â Zuko is silent and looks away, only proving her point as Y/N continued, âso we need to practice your people skills, and flirting for future reference, seeing as your first date is in about a week-â
Almost immediately, Zuko straightened his posture, sitting up and looking to her as though sheâd thrown a bucket of ice cold water onto him. âA week?â He winced at the way his voice cracked.
âYeah, I spoke with one of the girls, not her parents, and asked her to meet with you later in the week.â Y/N explained, âher name is Elara, sheâs in there.â
Frowning, Zuko reached for the binder and began to flip through the pages, âhowâd you know I wasnât going to get rid of her page?â Only to find the girlâs page, details on her personality, skills, hobbies and more on them.
A smirk spread across Y/Nâs face, âshe was one of few I was sure youâd keep.â With a sigh, Zuko looked back to Y/N, who still sat upside down, ânow. You need to practice your romance skills, so come on.â She twisted her body, her legs falling to the side of the couch, and then moving onto the floor, Y/N stood. As the blood rushed to her head, a wave of dizziness came over her, and Y/N found herself stumbling slightly.
A hand came to her back and forearm, steadying her, âyou need to practice walking.â Zuko laughed slightly, a nervous edge in his voice as he eyed her.Â
Y/N brought a hand to her head as she laughed as well, âoh my...â Y/N blinked several times as the wave of dizziness passed, her hand gripping Zukoâs arm as she grounded herself. Looking up to him, she quickly realized how close they were and cleared her throat, releasing his arm.
He followed suit, removing his hands from her, âsorry-â
âYou didnât do anything wrong, Zuko.âÂ
The look her gives her almost hurts. Because Y/N can see the shock within his eyes as he nods slowly in response. She wonders what heâs thinking of as he she gives him a tight lipped smile, clapping her hands together as she turns back to him, âpractice.â She repeated, mostly for herself.
And maybe offering to be the person he practiced on was her first mistake.Â
ATTEMPT FIVE
Y/N had learnt a lot about Zuko in the past four dates heâd been on. One of these things being the fact that Zuko was a wild card when it came to dates, and they seemed to either go very well with the girls contacting Y/N to let her know they wished for a second date, only for Zuko to reject the possibility. Or, they went very bad. And Zuko returned with some sort of drink splattered onto his clothing.
So, Y/N decided that the best course of action was to discover what exactly Zuko wasnât mentioning, and to follow him with a disguise. Evelyn had suggested it, Iroh supported the idea full-heartedly, though Marcella had believed it would be a huge invasion of privacy, Y/N didnât really care, seeing as it was her job to be involved in Zukoâs love life. She was getting paid to ensure he found love.Â
And she was curious.
Thatâs how Y/N ended up dressed in some very suspicious Fire Nation clothing alongside her assistants and the apparent Dragon of the West, famous tea shop owner, and member of the royal family.Â
What a wonderful assortment of people.
Marcella and Evelyn had separated from Iroh and Y/N, sitting in another booth across from them, it was a feeble attempt to keep them from sticking out. The girl had chosen a rather upscale restaurant, so dressing appropriately while also maintaining a look that prevented Zuko from recognizing them.Â
Y/N pulled her hat further down on her face as she looked to Iroh, who was browsing the menu. She wouldnât be shocked if he entered the kitchen just to make himself a âdecentâ cup of tea. Heâd been rather helpful during the whole process, anything she didnât find out from Zuko, Y/N had learnt from Iroh. âSee anything you like, Iroh?â
He smiled at her, nodding slowly, âI think Iâll just take some tea.âÂ
Looking to Marcella and Evelyn, Y/N smiles, the two are speaking with one another like they arenât supposed to be spying on the Fire Lord. But Y/N doesnât mind, this was more of a recreational activity anyways, and she was glad they were having fun. Since theyâd gotten to the Fire Nation two months ago there had been an... adjustment period to put it simply.
Y/N nodded at Irohâs statement, and her eyes fell back onto Zuko and his newest date, Amaya, she was a simple girl. Sheâd possessed organizational skills that Zuko lacked, planned dozens of events, had the expressive qualities that Zuko yearned for in a partner. Amaya was one of few that Y/N was sure Zuko would take a liking to. Especially since she also had training in a variety of fighting styles, and was quite the Firebender. Sheâd been a little skeptical when she first contacted Amaya, the girl seemed hesitant, but she agreed.
And from the looks of it, he had. The pair was laughing along with each other, but Y/N could see the way Zuko stiffened at any physical contact, in general heâd yet to relax. If Y/N was honest, it was basically like any first date, awkward.
Zuko didnât really know how to feel about Amaya, she was what he should be looking for in a girl, everything he needed if he was honest. She had an interest in the art, something Zuko had never taken to and the main reason his palace looked, âdullâ as Y/N had put it. And she was expressive, the main issue heâd had with Mai was her lack of expression. But, for some reason, Zuko just couldnât see her as anything more than a good friend. There was something... off about her.
âWhen that Earth Kingdom girl approached me, I was skeptical.â Amaya explained, taking a sip from her glass, âyou know how most Earth Kingdom folk are...â She gave him a look as Zuko listened in confusion. âThe Fire Nation citizens simply have more class.â Amaya settled for with a shrug.
Oh.
Zuko laughed nervously, âIâm not sure I understand. I find Earth Kingdom citizens pretty pleasant actually, and Y/N, the one you met, sheâs actually very resourceful and kind.â His mind went to Toph as well, who had invented an entirely new type of bending. She was an impressive young woman from the Earth Kingdom, and Y/N was as well, sheâd started her own business at a young age and turned it into something incredible.
âReally? She didnât seem too smart when I met her, but who can say no to a meeting with the Fire Lord?âÂ
Zuko was pretty sure her words were meant to be taken as a joke. But Amaya wasnât the first person Zuko had encountered with this mindset, she was just more subtle about it. The supremacy of the Fire Nation was still an idea that ran rampant in some peopleâs minds, though Zuko had dealt with most disputes regarding his peaceful relations with other nations. Many still missed the time when the Fire Nation practically owned the world, where Fire Nation citizens could treat the people who had their homes taken from them however they pleased.
It was a dark time in his nationâs history, nonetheless, several people missed it. This was something rather prevalent amongst Nobles though, they were the ones who lost an immense amount of land when the war had ended. Many of them were bitter about what had happened.Â
If Zuko was honest, sheâd probably had these ideas drilled into her since birth, and simply hadnât grown out of them, which was a shame. But as the ruler of a nation, he couldnât rule beside someone who looked down on others simply because they werenât from the Fire Nation.
Zuko shook his head, âY/N built her business from the ground up. And now sheâs helping the Fire Lord get dates.â He knows he sounds defensive, as though heâs prepared to fight her, something his Uncle would likely scold him for, but he doesnât care at the moment.
âAll she does is set you up with people.âÂ
Zukoâs brows furrowed at this comment, and he raised a hand to get the attention of the waiter, âexcuse me, could I get the check please?â The young man nodded, heading off to get the check, and Amaya looked at him incredulously.Â
Y/N had done far more than set him up with people, sheâd helped him begin planning a Gala, sheâd tried her best to find a good assortment of people that would fit both Zukoâs needs and the Fire Nationâs, and that list was probably very difficult to narrow down. Zuko had seen the work she put in for formulating profiles of the potential suitors, and throughout all of it she had done nothing but support him.Â
âWhat are you doing?â Amaya asked, shifting in her seat as she stared at Zuko quizzically.
The waiter came over and handed Zuko the check, and Zuko placed a pouch of money on the table, âthanks. Keep the change.â He explained, nodding to the boy, whoâs mouth gaped open in surprise as he took the pouch of money, bowing to Zuko repetitively, though Zuko wasnât paying much attention to him as he spoke to Amaya. âI donât think this is going to work out, Iâm sorry.â
Amaya is still seated in shock as Zuko rises from his table, and Y/N canât help it when her mouth gapes open at the sight of him simply abandoning his date. She makes eye contact with Iroh, who raises a brow, and they both sit up. She moves to follow Zuko, only to bump into someone.Â
âIâm so sorry!â Y/N exclaims, moving down to help them pick up their hat, that had fallen when they collided.
âNo, that was my fault entirely!â He responds, shaking his head as they both leaned town to pick it up.
âAang, come on! Heâs leaving.â The woman behind him exclaims.
Y/Nâs brows furrow in recognition as she looks up to see a blue arrow tattooed on the manâs head, and her eyes widen in realization. Zuko had described Aang several times during their conversations, he and the rest of his friends came up often. But Y/N did not expect the first time she met the Avatar and his friends to be when they were both following Zuko on his date.
ATTEMPT FOURTEEN
Y/N simply sighs as she opens her door to see Zuko, in the outfit sheâd helped him pick out. âWhat was it this time?â Heâd been on thirteen dates thus far, and Y/N was slowly realizing that Zuko was likely one of her most difficult clients. This was purely because heâd yet to get a second date, though there had been offers, Zuko had declined all of them.Â
âShe was just-â His hands gestured rather broadly, he was practically throwing them into the air, âshe was so rude to the waiter.â This had always been a dealbreaker for him, since heâd worked as a waiter in two different tea shops, Zuko had come to understand the importance of treating a waiter with kindness and how difficult the work could be.Â
His eyes dart between Y/N and her door, sheâs rubbing her eyes due to the exhaustion and Zuko canât help the guilt that floods him. Nonetheless, she opens the door wider, heading inside her room and signaling for him to close it as she falls back onto her bed. âYou were a waiter once, yeah?â Heâd told her a fair share about his life in the Earth Kingdom, sheâd inquired quite a bit about that part of his life.Â
He asked about her life in the Earth Kingdom too, and sheâd told him how poor life could be the in the outer rings, something heâd experienced for himself. Zuko listened as she describe living after her parents had died, working for a matchmaker only to discover she was actually good at the job, making a name for herself in the outer rings and then making her way inwards until she was one of the most sought after matchmakers in the kingdom. Y/N spoke of how sheâd met Marcella and Evelyn, and how sheâd taken them in when sheâd discovered they were both orphans, living on the streets as pickpockets.
Zuko wouldnât help but laugh at this, he could imagine Evelyn as a pickpocket, but Marcella? She was a sweet girl, he couldnât imagine her in a life of crime. Of course, desperation made people do questionable things. Zuko knew that much from experience.Â
âYeah, I was.â Came his response, taking a seat in the chair by her desk.Â
Y/N sat up in her bed, bracing herself with her elbows as she raised a brow at him, âwhat are you doing?â
Zuko frowned, shifting in the chair, âsitting...?â He moved to get up but Y/N waved him off.
âJust lay with me, idiot.â She allowed her head to fall back onto the bed, patting the spot beside her. Clearly, her suggestion wasnât bothering her, but Zuko felt his face flush at the possibility.
If heâs honest, heâs not even trying anymore when it comes to dates and women and love. There were three reasons for this, one of which was the fact that he simply wasnât connecting with any of the women he had met thus far. Sure they were nice, and they probably would be his type has it not been for reason two. The fact that Zuko had realized he had feelings for Y/N, what feelings? He wasnât sure, but they sure as hell werenât platonic, if they were he would not be blushing this much. He wouldnât get that weird feeling in his stomach whenever he spoke to her.
Then there was was reason three, if Zuko succeeded in finding love, then Y/N would leave. It was selfish, but he already knew he wouldnât find anyone considering he pretty sure he loved someone else already. So now, Zuko was basically procrastinating letting Y/N know that this just wasnât going to work out, mostly because he didnât have a plan.
He was debating just firing her, but that likely wouldnât go over well, and he wanted to see her business succeed. If you get fired by the Fire Lord, that just looks bad. Now Zuko wondered what the best way to go about this was, since there was no point in working for him, even if she was getting paid. He was a waste of time.Â
He couldnât help the smile graced his lips as his own thoughts reminded him of the time sheâd scolded him, telling him to quit being self-deprecating.Â
Zuko sat up from the chair, making his way over to her bed, Zuko found himself simply plopping down onto it face first, earning a laugh from Y/N.
He rolled over onto his back, turning to look at Y/N, only to find her eyes were already on him, bringing a blush to his cheeks as he mumbled, âwhat?â
âIâm just trying to figure out why you havenât gotten a second date yet.â Came her response, propping herself up on her forearm. âYou have a nice personality, youâre attractive, Iâm sure at least one of the girls caught your eye.â Y/N sighed, running a hand through her hair as she began to wonder if sheâd incidentally allowed her own feelings to get in the way of her work. Maybe thatâs why this was going so badly.
This was a problem.Â
Zuko simply shook his head, his face on fire as he listened to her words, though he couldnât help the hand he brought to the scar on his face. Y/N had pointed out before that he was allowing his Father to control his actions even now that he was imprisoned, and Zuko was beginning to see what she meant.Â
Removing his hand from his face, Zuko sighed. Though he didnât have much time to dwell on his thoughts as her hand hesitantly came to his face, placing a hand on his cheek and allowing her thumb to brush against the scar. Zuko jumped at the sudden contact, and Y/N moved to withdraw her hand almost instantly, but Zukoâs hand came to hers and held it there. Looking to her, he couldnât read the look in her eyes as she gazed at him, and suddenly he wished he was as good at reading people as she was.Â
âNo self-deprecating thoughts.â Y/N mumbled, âbad Zuko.â She removed her hand from his to flick his head, causing his brows to furrow.
He pouted, and Y/N let out a laugh as he spoke, âhow come you havenât found someone?â Zuko looked to her, âyouâre beautiful, and smart, and just... perfect.â He didnât notice when her cheeks warmed, âyouâre a literal matchmaker, surely youâve considered who your perfect person is.âÂ
Y/N fell onto her back, running her hands over her face as she shook her head, âhow have you not gotten a second date?â A sigh escaped her, âI havenât had time for love before, and I just havenât found that,â looking to him, she pursed her lips, âperfect person.â Growing up in the lower rings, she didnât have time for an actual relationship, and her business as a matchmaker grew incredibly quickly. At the end of the day, long term just didnât work out, Y/N barely had for herself, much less another person.
âI guess we both suck at love.â Zuko said, his tone was serious and Y/N couldnât help but burst out into laughter as she swatted at his chest.
Too bad they couldnât suck at love together.Â
ATTEMPT SEVENTEEN THROUGH TWENTY EIGHT
Smoothing over her green dress, a sign of her citizenship in the Earth Kingdom, Y/N moved to answer the knock on her bedroom door. Given how long sheâd been in the Fire Nation, Y/N wondered if the Earth Kingdom would still feel like home when she returned. The idea of going back felt odd, and though that time likely wasnât soon unless Zuko met the love of his life tonight, it was inevitable.
And it horrified her.Â
Holding the edge of the dress slightly to make it easier to walk, Y/N sighed and opened the door, seeing Zuko. A small smile on her face as she eyed his Fire Nation robes, âyou look nice.â She complimented, tilting her head at him as she allowed her eyes to travel over his figure.
Zuko nodded, a blush coming over her cheeks, his mouth gaping open as he looked at Y/N. âYou look beautiful.â She did, the dress looked amazing on her, her hair styled just right, and bracelets adorning her wrists.
âThank you, Fire Lord Zuko.â His nose crinkled at the use of his title, coming from her it felt even weirder, wrong almost. But she continued, âmind helping me out?â She asked, moving back to her desk and taking a necklace in hand. Y/N had been struggling to put it on for the past few minutes, and now she had someone to do it for her.
He nodded, closing the door behind him, he took the necklace from her hand, and when Y/N ensured her hair was out of his way, Zuko brought the necklace around her neck. He secured the clasp, hands lingering as he adjusted it to the center of her neck. Zuko couldnât help but notice a small scar on her shoulder, hand brushing over it.
Y/N looked over her shoulder and to him, brow raised, âhowâd you get this?â He asked, brows drawn together. His hand traced the raised skin gently, Y/n could feel her cheeks warming at his touch, inhaling deeply.Â
She grimaced, âa knife fight I almost lost my life to.â Was her explanation. Y/N didnât like to think back to the days when sheâd resorted to several... questionable actions to stay alive. But she pushed those thoughts away as she turned to face him. âYou ready?â Y/N asked, they had to get to the Gala soon, considering the fact that Zuko was the host, Y/N was shocked heâd even stopped by her room in the first place.
Zuko was silent, simply nodding as he extended his arm for her to take. And Y/N did, looping her arm around his as she smiled, âyou are gonna woo so many Earth Kingdom women tonight!â Y/N exclaimed, more confidence in her voice than Zuko had.
Shame the only Earth Kingdom girl he wanted to âwooâ was her.
When theyâd arrived at the Gala, descending the stairs together, they were greeted with the claps of the other guests. Zuko would feel the anxiety flood him, but he paid it no mind. Though Y/N could feel the way he stiffened as he ended his speech to the diplomats of all nations, âlet this be a peaceful, and joyous night!âÂ
They all burst out into cheers before the party continued, the music starting once more, and everyone returning to feasting upon the buffet, dancing along the ballroom floor or speaking with one another. All while Y/N led Zuko down the stairs, dragging him by the hand, âcome on. Enjoy your own party, meet some girls.â She winked, and Zuko swore his face heated up even more than it already had.Â
Y/N wasnât a fool, she knew that if sheâd stuck by his side the entire night, she would serve as a repellant of any potential suitors. So naturally, much to Zuko and Y/Nâs dismay, she removed herself from him, playfully shoving him towards a group of Earth Kingdom girls sheâd mentioned earlier. Though there were several other clusters in the ballroom.
Zuko simply sighed, giving Y/N a small smile before making his way to the group of girls. If he was honest, he would rather be spending the Gala by her side, but he had to put in some effort. He owed Y/N that much. Besides, this was an entirely new group of girls, maybe he would find someone tonight.Â
âHi there.â Zuko greeted, waving awkwardly at the girls.Â
This action earned him a few laughs, and he was unsure if they actually found it funny or felt the need to laugh since he was the Fire Lord. Shortly after they began introducing themselves, speaking like there was no tomorrow.Â
If Zuko was honest, the number of women here was overwhelming. So, as he excused himself from the conversation, much to their chagrin, he placed his cup down on the platter of one of many waiters. Making his way outside, Zuko couldnât help but feel relieved at the fresh air that hit him on the balcony. Though he contemplated heading back inside when he noticed another girl was already there, eyes shut as she faced the sky, she turned to see him, eyes widening a fraction. âIâm sorry, I can go-â
âNo!â She exclaimed, cheeks flushing in embarrassment due to her outburst, âno... itâs fine.â She turned back to look at the sky, hand clasped together, fidgeting.
Zuko stepped forward, finding himself situated across from her, leaning against the railing, âso why are you out here?â
A small laugh escaped the girl, and she ran a hand through her hair, âitâs rather stress relieving. You have a lovely view in your palace.âÂ
He couldnât help but feel disappointed when he realized she recognized him, though Zuko nodded along, âwhatâs your name? If you donât mind me asking?â It was a stupid question, and Zuko nearly facepalmed as he pursed his lips.
âAileen.â Came her response, and Zuko realized he recognized her name as well. She was the child of one of the more well known members of Fire Nation nobility, her parents had approached him in the past in hopes of arranging a marriage between the two of them. He had declined almost immediately. And now that Aileen turned to him, he had a feeling he made the right decision, âyouâre Zuko, right?âÂ
He exhaled deeply, nodding, âthatâs me.â Sometimes, Zuko wondered what his life wouldâve been like if he wasnât Zuko, perhaps things wouldâve been simpler. No, things definitely wouldâve been simpler. There would be no diplomatic meetings, no wars, no idiots trying to hurt other people, no more assassination attempts, no more fake smiles and no more Galas. Of course, if he wasnât Zuko, he never wouldâve met Y/N.
âI heard youâre looking for a partner in crime.â Aileen prompted, âwhy arenât you in there finding that future love of your life?âÂ
Shrugging, Zuko looked up at the sky, âI found her. She just doesnât want me.â
He can feel Aileen stare at him, sheâs silent for a moment, and Zuko wonders what sheâs thinking. Though he doesnât need to wait long to find out as she responds, âI understand.â Aileen focuses her gaze on the glass sheâd placed on the thick railing of the balcony, âthe person I love probably doesnât love me back. And even if they did, my parents disapprove.â
âDid you ask?â He felt hypocritical, Zuko himself had never spoken with Y/N in regards to his feelings, and he likely never would, but he wanted to know. âIf they love you?â
Aileen laughs slightly, shaking her head, âI couldnât bring myself to. Iâm scared.â She replied, looking back to him curiously, âdid you?â
âNo.â He responded lamely, tapping his fingers against the railing with a sigh.
Aileen laughed at this, âI guess we are both cowards then.â She pursed her lips, âI didnât ask because I was scared, why didnât you?â
And then the words come spilling out, âwhoever I end up with will greatly impact the whole world, whether I want to acknowledge it or not. And she doesnât deserve that burden, nobody does.â He laughs bitterly as he continues, âsheâs also the person that was hired to help me find love in the first place.â Zuko pauses, looking away from Aileen, âand I guess Iâm scared too.â
âIronic.â Aileen mumbles, bringing her eyes back to the sky, âletâs make a deal, Your Majesty.âÂ
Zuko cringes at the use of that title, almost asking her to simply refer to him by his name, though he simply responds, âwhat deal?â
âWe both confess. And if it goes horribly wrong, we can get married.âÂ
Y/N canât see the shock on Zukoâs face, but she can see how comfortable he feels with this girl, Y/N hadnât seen her before, but she was just happy Zuko was connecting with someone. Except she also wasnât, a bitter feeling enveloping her as she turned away, looking for something else to focus her attention on, something that didnât hurt.Â
She turned to see Marcella and Evelyn in the distance, speaking with each other. Y/N supposed if she wouldnât be finding love tonight, then at least they would. She was no fool, she saw the way they looked at each other, the glances when the other wasnât looking. Maybe it was dumb, but Y/N found herself feeling jealous as she moved over to the buffet with a sigh. Food solved everything in her experience, after a client had a particularly bad day, food made things better.
âPerhaps some tea?â Iroh stood beside her, a kettle in his hand, he had insisted he serve tea at the Gala, though Zuko had assured him it would be just as easy to find someone else to do the job.
Y/N smiled at him, nodding as she took a cup from the array of them within the buffet, allowing Iroh to pour her some tea. âThank you, Iroh.â Her voice is quieter than normal, and itâs clear that Iroh can tell something is wrong.
âYou know, you deserve to be happy to Y/N.â His words catch her by surprise, though she doesnât have much time to consider their meaning before flames lighting the room begin to move erratically, causing her brows to furrow.
Something was wrong.Â
Iroh nods to her, placing the tea kettle down as his brow furrow and she nods back, Iroh disappearing into the crowd of people. Y/Nâs eyes fall back to Marcella and Evelyn, and she quickly moves to their side of the room, ignoring the hush that had fallen over the room, panicked gasps amongst them. Her hands fall onto both girlâs arms as she nods to them, âY/N, whats going-â
Y/N is already dragging them in the direction of the exit, âget out of here, find the guards. Iâm going to find Zuko.â The girls didnât have much time to argue, as Y/N was already working her way through the panicked crowd, back to the balcony where sheâd last seen Zuko. But, people were already pushing against her movements, making it difficult. Raising her head above the crowd in an attempt to see whatâs going on, Y/N realizes whats happening.Â
Firebenders were trying to force them together, and Y/N couldnât help but panic as she wondered if Marcella and Evelyn managed to escape and find the guards.Â
This was an ambush.
No, this was an assassination attempt. Zuko already knew as he watched the atmosphere of the party begin to shift, that and the person who stood before him in all black, brandishing several weapons. Alongside four others who stood by her side.Â
âYou know, it wasnât until I met you that I realized how bad it had gotten.â Aileen stood beside Zuko, eyes meeting his in horror as they exchanged looks. Zuko simply hoped the nod he gave her provided some semblance of comfort as he returned his attention to the person before him. âI mean, defending some lowly Earth Kingdom matchmaker? What type of career even is that?âÂ
Her voice is almost maniacal, and Zuko canât help but wince as he feels reminded of his sister. But he recognizes it nonetheless, Amaya. It had been months since heâd seen her, but he could still remember her voice. Her face was covered by a mask, and she wielded a sword, and if Zuko remembered correctly, she had been trained in dozens of fighting styles and was a talented bender herself. Alongside the four other men, Zuko couldnât help but panic internally as he spoke, âAmaya, why donât you put the swords down, and we talk about this.â
She laughs in response, ripping the mask that covered her face off and throwing it aside, âpeople have tried to talk to you about this. Your-â She grappled for the word, a hand yanking at her hair as she gestured to him with a sword, âyour radical ideas!âÂ
Zuko didnât find having morals radical, but he wasnât going to say that, not while Aileenâs life was on the line. Zuko suddenly realized why having an heir was important as he shook his head, âAmaya, look. Why donât you let Aileen here leave, and then you and I can talk.âÂ
Aileen looks like sheâs going to protest, but Amaya glances at her red robes, a sign of her Fire Nation citizenship, and gestures for her to leave. âGet out. My problem isnât with you.âÂ
When Aileen doesnât move, Amaya quickly grows frustrated, calling out to one of the guards sheâd brought along that lied inside, âtake this fool away.âÂ
Thereâs no response, and Zuko can see panic flood Amayaâs face. And looking behind her, he quickly realizes that most of the guards have been subdued, Y/N holding one of them in her arms as she knocks them to the ground. Moving towards the balcony stealthily as Amayaâs hands begin to shake, fire sparking in her palms as she focused her attention onto Zuko. âYouâre going to pay for what youâve done to our nation.âÂ
But Zuko wasnât looking at her as he shook his head, hoping Y/N would understand. There was no way she could overpower Amaya, not with her bending. Y/N didnât even have a weapon.
Now, Y/N knew for a fact that no matter how talented Zuko was, he wouldnât put the girl beside him in danger. His priority would be keeping her alive, and given the training Amaya had as a noble, in both Firebending and fighting, she might even be as good as Zuko in a fight.
Meaning she had to be taken out of the fight.
Everything happened pretty fast after that. Zuko was shielding body coming forward to shield Aileens as he extended his freehand to Firebend at the people whoâd surrounded them, only for Amaya to move out of the way. The girl was practically screaming bloody murder as she lunged at him, now wielding her sword.Â
Zuko didnât have to figure out what to do next because Y/N moved faster than Amaya did, tackling the girl over the railing and down below as he began to scream.Â
THE FINAL ATTEMPT
Zukoâs knee is bouncing rapidly as he sits beside Iroh, who knits a scarf of some sort despite the blistering heat of the Fire Nation. Heâs insisted that when Y/N returned to the Earth Kingdom sheâd need it, and Zuko didnât have the heart to disagree. Iroh had started stress-knitting about four hours ago, when Y/N had entered the room they all sat before, anxiously awaiting news of her condition.
Marcella and Evelyn are to Zukoâs left, Marcellaâs sobs had quieted down, but Zuko wouldnât be shocked if he looked over and saw tears silently streaming down her face. The girl hadnât taken it well. Evelyn remained composed, doing her best to comfort Marcella, but the wait was clearly getting to her as well as she fidgeted with Marcellaâs hands.
Seeing as Y/N had fallen from several stories up off the balcony and into the water below, Zuko didnât really think it was possible to take the news well. But he was trying.Â
A pang sounded from inside the room, and Zuko practically shot up onto his feet, moving to knock on the door to discover was was wrong, only for Iroh to grab his wrist, shaking his head. Zuko exhaled deeply, beginning to pace across the hall. He found himself wishing that Katara hadnât been busy with Water Tribe business, she was an excellent healer. Alas, Katara wasnât there, and Zuko had to settle for one of the skilled Water Tribe diplomats instead, alongside a few others skilled in medicine.Â
As he paced, Zuko could feel Evelynâs eyes on him, and it became clear she was itching to speak and he sighed, âwhatâs wrong?â There were dozens of answers to this question, the main one being the fact that Y/N could die today, so he hoped she understood what he meant.
The girl is glaring at him, and Zuko canât help but feel uneasy. Because maybe she blames him for this as much as he blames himself, and maybe sheâs going to tell him off, blame him for everything. Because if Y/N dies, she and Marcella will have no one again.Â
Not that Zuko would allow that. Heâd grown attached to the girls as well, they were kind, and helpful. Theyâd help improve the interior decor of the palace, and if he was honest, it looked better than anything he ever couldâve done.
âYou better tell her how you feel after this.â
Zukoâs mouth gapes open at the girlâs words, and he swears the breath leaves his longs, and its as though everything hits him then.Â
He would never get to tell Y/N how he felt if she died. Heâd never get to listen to her try and tell a story just to go off on dozens of tangents, heâd never get to watch as she attempted to cook again, and heâd never get to hold her in his arms once more. There would be no more late night talks, and he wouldnât hear her laugh, she wouldnât tease him anymore and they wouldnât walk through the courtyard feeding turtleducks again.
Sheâd never know he loved her.
Zuko finds himself nodding to Evelynâs words, frozen in place as he looks to her and asks, âwas I that obvious?â His voice is hoarse, and its probably because he didnât stop screaming, even when Y/Nâs body hit the water.Â
Marcella is laughing at his words, blowing her nose into a tissue that Evelyn hands her before she speaks, âpainfully obvious.â
âFor someone whoâs job revolves around love, Y/N is one of the most oblivious people Iâve ever met.â Evelyn grumbles out, rubbing her eyes as she yawns.
It was late, Zuko knew that much, the guests of the party had gone to the infirmary in the palace, being tended to by doctors and any other available healers if injured. Otherwise, theyâd all returned to their rooms to sleep, or more likely stay up in fear of another attack. Zuko surely would.
âGo to bed guys, itâs getting late.âÂ
Evelyn looks at him like heâs one of the dumbest people sheâs met, and if Zuko was honest, he probably was. But he simply nodded to Marcella, who had started leaning her head against Evelynâs shoulder, eyes fluttering shut. âUncle, why donât you take them back to their rooms?â
Considering the fact that Zukoâs guards were around the corner, he wasnât scared for his safety, but their presence just made him want to remain awake.Â
âNephew, you should sleep as well.â His Uncle replied, though he rose from his seat, bringing the yarn and the start of the scarf under his arm.Â
Zuko gave his Uncle a smile, âI will. But if anything happens before then, Iâll be sure to alert you all.â He assured, nodding to Evelyn, who eyed him wearily. But she relented, shaking Marcella gently before standing up alongside her and Iroh.Â
When they were out of sight, Zuko plopped back down in the seat, his elbows resting on his knees as he brought his hands to his face.
And for the first time in the night he cried, his body racked with sobs as tears streamed down his face and he struggled to breathe. The pain of all that had happened felt almost unbearable. She had to live. Y/N had to live. Because Zuko was going to confess.Â
His fear of losing her outweighed his fear of rejection.
Wiping his tears away, Zuko suddenly felt grateful that Evelyn had left the box of tissues as he blew his nose. He sighed, his eyes piercing the door, hoping that something would happen.
As though his stare had willed her to exit the room, the healer came out, a grimace on her face as she looked to Zuko, likely because of his bloodshot eyes. The woman simply sighed, the grimace becoming a more sympathetic look. âMiss L/N lost a lot of blood... several of her bones were broken when she hit the water, especially her ribs. Her internal organs were damaged as well and... well it wasnât very likely for her to survive.â
Sheâs dead.
Y/N is dead.
Oh.
âWow, you look like a mess.âÂ
Zukoâs head whips up, his eyes meeting Y/Nâs, sheâs leaning against a wooden crutch, grinning lazily at him. The healer beside her looks rather apologetic as she frantically explains, âshe woke up far quicker than we anticipated and only agreed to rest if we participated in her rather cruel prank.â
So, she wasnât a ghost.
Zuko launches himself up from the chair, nearly tackling Y/N, but the wooden crutch she uses for support serves as a reminder of her fragile state as he asks, âcan I hug you?â
Her smile falters at the sound of his voice, hoarse and jagged, so she simply extends are free arm outward. Zuko takes this as an invitation for a hug, gently wrapping his arms around her waist and burying his head in her neck, Y/N wrapped her free arm around his neck, hand finding its way to the hair at the nape of his neck. âIm s-â
âItâs not your fault Zuko. I swear if you say its your fault I will throw myself over the balcony again.â She threatened, hand tightening in his hair.
Zuko laughs quietly, inhaling deeply before he speaks again, âplease never do that again.âÂ
âI make no promises.â
Sighing, Zuko releases her, âI hate you so much.âÂ
Y/N scoffed, âyou love me.â She was limping over to the bed in the middle of the room, blood coating the surrounding area. Though the doctors in the room were moving across the room that theyâd placed Y/N on, and dealt with her injuries on, Zuko couldnât help but feel sick at the sight.
She couldâve died.
âYeah, I do.â
Y/N pauses, turning to look back at him, her mouth gapes open. Zukoâs looking away, eyes on anything but her as he inhales deeply.
The healer simply sighs, âbefore we do this, I should inform the two of you that Miss Y/N cannot do any... strenuous activities for at least one month.â
Zukoâs cheeks are flushing red as he shakes his head rapidly, âmaâam-â
âWeâll be taking our leave. Have fun, but not too much fun. Please.â The woman closes the door behind her once the other doctors are out of the room, and Y/N canât stop laughing at the mortified expression on Zukoâs face, despite the sharp pain she feels in her ribs.
Taking a seat on the fresh sheets of the bed, Y/N sighs, âso you love me?â Sheâs picking at the sheets, âas a friend?â
Zuko suddenly realizes just how right Evelyn was as he slowly shakes his head, âno. More than a friend. I think I inadvertently sabotaged half of the dates you sent me on because of it.â
Y/N laughs quietly, eyes falling on Zuko only to see heâs looking anywhere but her, she calls out to him quietly, âZuko. Look at me.â
He doesnât hesitate to bring his gaze to her, eyes meeting hers as he begins to fidget with his hand. Y/N simply reaches her hand out, and he takes it. âI love you too, idiot.â She mumbles, pulling him closer and wrapping her arms around his waist. âI just wish you had told me sooner so I didnât waste so much time trying to set you up with other women.âÂ
A small laugh escapes him as he brings his hand to her hair, âhow do I know you werenât purposely giving me bad matches because you were in love with me?âÂ
Y/N removes her head from his stomach, looking up at him, her nose crinkles, âunlike you, I am a professional.â Zuko flicks her forehead, and Y/N pouts at him, hand coming up to his face, âcan I kiss you?â
She can feel his face warm, but he nods rather enthusiastically nonetheless, and Y/N finds herself smiling at his as she uses her hands to pull his face downward towards her. His lips meet hers, and Zuko finds himself feeling complete, hands coming to Y/Nâs face in an attempt to pull her closer while hers move to his ball up his robes that heâd yet to change.
Zuko pulls away first, forehead resting on hers, âyou need to sleep.âÂ
Y/N scoffed, eyes narrowing at him, âyou need to sleep.â Looking to the bed, she raises a brow at him, âwanna lay with me?â
âI donât think thatâs a good idea, I could accidentally injure you or-â
Rolling her eyes, Y/N yanks him onto the bed, making her way to the other side and getting comfortable, âIâll be fine.â
Yeah, everything would be fine. Maybe not for the Fire Nation, seeing as Y/N would potentially help rule a nation but...
Everything would be fine.

-------------------------//---------------------------
As Zemo made arrangements on his end, you did not know what to expect. You, Sam and Bucky were brought to the tarmac of a small private airport, your attention was brought to the private plane that Zemo was leading you towards.
Sam made a comment on Zemoâs wealth and the latter explained that he was practically royalty before the Avengers destroyed his country. TouchĂŠ.
You took the seat right across from Zemo and you couldnât help but put your guard up around the man. He could sense the tension all over your face and offered champagne to which you declined. You wanted to make sure you were fully sober around this guy.
As you looked on at the exchange he had with his steward, he almost looked decent for a moment. You wouldnât have thought of this guy to be a manipulative and scheming man that caused that chain of events many years ago.
âYou donât know what itâs like to be locked in a cell.â Zemo started off after having a sip of his champagne. He then paused in his actions as he looked over all of you and corrected him.
âOh thatâs right, you all do. My apologies.â Rolling your eyes, you crossed your arms as you leaned into the comfort of the plush aeroplane seat.
Sam tried to get Zemo to start talking but the baron brushed it off for a moment as he looked at a book in fascination. As Zemo brought up a familiar notebook, he asked who Nakajima was.
Your eyes perked up at the familiar name and you immediately turned to look at Bucky who instantly pounced on Zemo and grabbed him into a chokehold. Bucky warned him not to touch his notebook or he would actually kill Zemo, probably with his bare hands.
As Bucky settled down in his seat once more, you gave him a knowing look but he averted his eyes to avoid eye contact. The conversation then took a more light-hearted turn as Sam tried to describe how Steve noted down his suggestion of the Trouble Man soundtrack in the notebook that now was passed onto Bucky.
Sam asked if Bucky liked it too and the super-soldier replied that he liked 40âs music to which Sam look almost offended that Bucky didnât share his taste in music. Bucky looked like he didnât even want to bother but he clarified that he indeed liked it just to get Sam to back off.
Zemo decided to join in the conversation and put his two cents. Sam was surprised at how Zemo managed to eloquently describe the music style. Afterwhich, Sam went on to say how everyone loved Marvin Gaye while Bucky agreed that he did too.
Sam added that Steve adored the singer too. Hearing this, Zemo commented that Bucky must have looked up to Steve very much.
Yes, we all did. You wanted to add that in too.
Zemo, however, then took the liberty of giving his view on Steve. He talked about how dangerous it could be to idolize super soldiers like Steve and start to disregard their flaws, thus allowing him to not be held accountable for the repercussions that stem from his actions. Even if that meant the formation of movements, the fighting of wars, the loss of innocent lives.
Sam gave him a warning to better stop talking but Zemo continued on. When Zemo noticed how you started shaking your head in dissatisfaction, he gave a light chuckle before speaking directly to you.
âMiss Y/N. Contrary to my own personal views on enhanced individuals, I do find you fascinating, The files I read on you only make me more curious. Can I ask some questions?â You could feel the attention being put on you in the room and you grew slightly uncomfortable.
âWhat do you want?â Hoping to act nonchalant to mask your nervousness, you crossed your legs and leaned back into your seat.
âYou have no family history. You grew up in an orphanage, am I right?â Nodding at the facts he laid out, Zemo carried on.
âYou couldnât have possibly been experimented on. You have gotten into any accidents?â You shook your head in response.
âChemical exposure, radioactive bites, cosmic ray exposuresâŚ.those are the possibilities that an ordinary person could obtain superhuman abilities according to the theories online.â Unimpressed, you continued to shake your head at him.
âTell me. Iâm curious.â You couldnât entertain the likes of him but seeing how he was leaning in to wait for your answer, you gave an indifferent expression before speaking.
âIt appeared out of nowhere. Someone committed arson in the local convenience shop where I was at the time. I was trapped with the elderly shopkeeper and I thought we were both going to die. A burning beam was falling onto us and I thought that was the end. I suddenly emitted a burst of energy that managed to put own the fire and incinerate the beam into ashes.â As you retold your story, memories of your fear from that time came back.
âThe shopkeeper lost consciousness but I saw everything. I wasnât sure if it was me but I ran away. I couldnâtâ return to the orphanage because I was afraid the police would find me. I lived on the streets for a week before my powers manifested again.â Your eyes fall to your fidgety hands, cracking your knuckles as it gave you some sort of relief.
âA kid was crossing the street without his mum knowing and a car was speeding on the road. I tried to reach out and pull him back in but the car was just inches away from us both. I caused a scene that couldnât be ignored. S.H.I.E.L.D managed to find me and took me in.â Zemoâs eyes were tracking your every movement and expression in a way that Bucky didnât like. As if you were something up for display and Bucky put his foot down.
He was getting protective of you and did not want Zemo to harbour any hidden intentions. Who knew what Zemo was thinking of?
Zemo spoke up before Bucky had the chance.
âFascinating just fascinating. Itâs like your powers had been dormant inside you all along. Are you even human?â
âLast time I checked, my blood is still red.â Your sarcastic response earned a laugh from Zemo and he stroked his chin as he continued to observe you quietly. Sensing he had more thoughts in his mind, you returned the questions back to him.
âYou hate enhanced individuals so much, would you get rid of me if you had the chance?â Growing a smirk, Zemo wasnât expecting you to ask him that and he was more than eager to give his reply.
âI am undecided, but youâre different. I can see you are more discreet than the others, just like Bucky over here.â Zemo made his final remark before he moved on to talking about the location that you were headed.
His words sunk in and you kept on thinking about how he hit the nail on the head.
Yes, you had to be more discreet. You could never proudly show off what you had, instead, you had to keep yourself hidden in order to protect yourself.
Recalling your S.H.I.E.L.D days, you remembered how you were told to keep your powers on a low profile by Director Fury himself.
Your lab results came back and it was discovered that you had a special gene in your DNA that could be identified. There werenât any references or connections to existing research and findings so you were viewed almost as an abnormality.
It was then later discovered that your powers were connected to your life force and if you ever over-exerted yourself, you could possibly die. That almost happened back during the civil war between the Avengers. It was the first time you ever used your powers on a larger scale and you had even passed out at the end of the battle.
You remembered waking up in a hospital bed on the raft.
When you found refuge in Wakanda, you got to learn more about your powers with Shuriâs help. She believed as long as you trained your stamina and built up your strength, you could control your powers without ever worrying about being drained. Thatâs how you found yourself the privilege to receive special training with the Dora Milajae under King TâChallaâs request.
You definitely owed the Wakandans big time.
Seeing how you were uncharacteristically down, Bucky wanted to check in with you out of concern. However, he chose to restrain himself, thinking that you probably one to be left alone. He wished he could do more for you like you do for him.
-------------------------//---------------------------
Before you knew it, you landed in Madripoor. An island nation that was lawless and dangerous, yet home to the darkest of black markets and underground businesses. Zemo said that all of you could not go in as yourselves and had to basically go in undercover.
You couldnât hold back your laughter when Sam changed and came out in a fancy printed suit. He was to act as a real life promiscuous and rich man who really could have been his doppelgänger when you saw a picture of the man.
However, you werenât one to laugh when Zemo asked you to act as one of Conrad Mack aka Smiling Tigerâs fling for the night. When you first received your outfit, you threw it back in Zemoâs face.
You were not the most comfortable with sexy and revealing clothing personally so you couldnât imagine yourself wearing it at all. Zemo tried to convince you that Smiling Tigerâs women were all of a certain type so you had to go through with it in order to fit in.
Letting out a groan, you snatched the little champagne dress with an open keyhole back. The front was designed to give a loose look that shyly reveals your cleavage. The dress held onto your shoulders with thin straps and it overall gave the impression of a silk slip dress.
When you put it on, you wiped your clammy hands on the silk material and grimaced at how it barely covered your ass. You were grateful that the shoes you received had thick block heels as you had forgotten how to even walk in high heels anymore.
Swiping on the red lipstick for the final touch, you took a deep breath to calm your nerves as you looked in the mirror. You got this.
Stepping out of the changing room, you were met with the full attention of all three men and you put a finger up to warn them of making any unneeded comments.
âDamn Y/N. I mean this in the nicest way possible but this is an entirely different look for you. In a good way, of course.â Sam tried to compliment you seeing that you werenât fully into your outfit.
âThanks, Sam.â You knew his intentions were always pure and good, so you didnât mind it much. As he and Zemo went off to discuss something, you saw that Bucky was still looking at you intently. He must think you look weird, you thought.
In all the years that Bucky have known you, it was the first time he has seen you looking like this. You always had gone for casual and comfortable looks in your daily life. The only time he has seen something different was when you put on your tailored suits for formal events.
He had to do a double-take when he saw how the little dress number hugged your figure in the right places.
Bucky knew he shouldnât continue looking but his eyes fleeting quick glances when you were looking elsewhere. He always felt that you were one of the most beautiful people he knew on the inside, the fact that you could look past what he did and accept him for he was. He never felt that he had to pretend to be fine when youâre around because you were there to accept him for better or worst.
Seeing you now stirred up a different feeling inside of him. Why did you suddenly seem so attractive this time? He did not want to be that guy who viewed women differently because of the way they dressed. In fact, he was never the kind to like someone because of the way they look but more of how they make him feel.
However, observing how bashful and shy you look in front of him, Bucky suddenly felt rather nervous himself. He saw you taking a step towards and he swore his breath hitched as his mind was registering this scene in slow-motion.
Your hands came up to put his dog tags inside his black shirt before going for the zipper of his jacket. Your eyes fleetingly met his for a moment before you started saying something.
Bucky wasnât able to process it as he was entirely focused on how you were casually helping him as you normally did, but his mind canât help but think of it as an intimate gesture.
You continued to buckle up the belts of Buckyâs harness and couldnât help but to relish in the act of caring for him. This was probably the only time you could fulfil your feelings of wanting to be close to him without crossing the line.
âAll done.â Once you have adjusted the straps on his shoulder to make sure they were comfortable, you glanced to see Bucky looking down at you in a daze.
âHey Buck, you there?â Calling for his attention, Bucky snapped back to reality as he saw you staring at him with a curious doe-eyed look. Clearing his thought, Bucky scrambled to recall what you had said and just continued looking at you in question.
You went on to ask if the straps were comfortable to which he nodded curtly. You grinned in satisfaction for a short moment before it fell into a tight-lipped smile.
âBucky, are you really ok to go into character? I know how hard you worked to get away from all of that.â Implying how he had to act like the Winter Soldier for this undercover mission, Bucky took a deep breath before answering you.
âIâll be fine. Itâs just for this mission.â You just silently nodded at his words before signalling that you two should get a move on.
-------------------------//---------------------------
All of you were heading to Low Town as Zemo named to find his informant, Selby. Zemo reminded everyone to stay in character regardless of the situation, if not the mission would be compromised and your lives could be at risk.
Zemo gave you a personal warning to avoid using your powers if possible. If your powers were revealed publicly, there was a high chance you were at a bigger risk than the rest because people would want to take you for their own.
It was not every day an enhanced individual with superpowers walks into Madripoor and you would definitely become a prize to be coveted.
You were first greeted by the hustle and bustle of the nightlife crowd. The neon signs lit up the incredibly dark streets followed by the loud booming music that could be heard from some of the places that you passed. Your eyes were focused on Zemoâs back as he led all of you to the location, refusing to make eye contact with anyone else.
Entering the crowded bar, you could hear Zemo speaking Russian to Bucky. You werenât familiar with the language but you could make out one world, Soldat.
Sneaking your arms around Sam who was caught off, you gave me a pointed look that told him that the undercover work starts now. He gave you a brief nod before rolling out his shoulders and you pressed yourself closer to him, putting your acting face on.
All of you stood by the bar where the bartender greeted all of you.
âHello, gentlemen. Wasnât expecting you, Smiling Tiger.â The bartender nodded to Sam. His eyes moved over to meet yours before greeting you, Miss. You gave your best smile in return.
âHis plans changed. We have business to do with Selby.â Zemo told the bartender. You could see the shift in his eyes and saw someone from out of the corner of your eye moving away. Shifting your stance, the bartender didnât acknowledge Zemoâs words and glanced back to you again.
âNew face?â His comment was directed towards Sam but seeing how Sam was hesitating, you realised that he hadnât had much experience with undercover work at all. He was a military man not a spy or agent after all.
âHopefully, the last.â You giggled shyly and looked up to Sam with an affectionate gaze before giving the bartender a wink.
The bartender nodded curtly before asking Sam (Smiling Tiger) if he wanted his usual. Sam nodded silently in an efforts to prevent himself from doing anything out of character.
You caught Bucky looking at you as he leaned sideways on the counter. Your silent exchange was a way for you two to check in with each other and a brief smile mirrored on both of your faces before you turn to see the bartender taking out a snake from a big jar.
Trying to control your expression at the disgust coming up your throat, you subtly swallowed heavily at the sight of how the bartender slit the snake open. Sam who had his back turned for a brief moment was shocked to see what was presented on the counter in front of him.
Zemo tried to continue to put on the act and acted like it was nothing out of the ordinary. Your global knowledge and several visits to Asia made you realised why this was the Smiling Tigerâs favourite. Snakes infused into wine was touted to be an aphrodisiac to help a man increase, ahem, stamina.
Bucky felt almost bad for Sam and looked away briefly. You could see Sam gulping down nervously when the bartender added the finishing touch to the drink and you gently rubbed his arm for emotional support.
âI love these.â Sam managed to say through gritted his teeth and clinked his glass with Zemo. Your own bile almost resurfaced and you quickly turned your head to hide your nervous gulp.
Putting up a thumbs up awkwardly, you wanted to facepalm when the bartender looked back at Sam with a dubious expression.
You knew you needed to do something so everyoneâs covers wonât be blown. Putting on a sly smirk, you let a hand move up Samâs chest slowly and sensually before resting it where his heart was.
âLooks like you and I will be in for a long night.â Adding a slight giggle, you pretended to act shy after you spoke your words. Sam was trying his hardest to not look bewildered at your act while Bucky was trying to suppress a sudden wave of annoyance that washed over him.
He knew that this was an act but he still didnât like it for some reason. He had to admit that he was not expecting you to get into character so well, seeing that this image you were presenting was the furthest cry from who you actually were.
The bartender looked slightly less suspicious of all of you before he went away. You could feel Sam heaving a sigh of relief beside you and you did the same alongside him.
Another man came up to Zemo, telling him of how he was unwelcomed in the area. Zemo putting up a cool façade, explained he had no business with someone named the power broker. Zemo restated his business here once more before the guy left.
Zemo explained that the power broker runs Madripoor and it was best you all stayed under his radar. Moments passed before another guy came up behind Zemo and Zemo turned to Bucky talking in Russian once more.
The instant the man placed his hands on Zemo, Bucky went into winter soldier mode. Everyoneâs attention was directed to the scene happening. The whirling sound of Buckyâs vibranium was heard clearly as he was nearly crushing the manâs hands and went ahead to knock him over.
More and more people started to gather foolâs courage to take on Bucky. You saw how he easily took down everyone with barely any sweat.
âDidnât take much for him to fall back into form,â Zemo commented to you and Sam, and in all honesty, you wanted to choke him like what Bucky was doing to another guy on the barâs counter.
Hearing the continuous clicking of guns from everyone in the bar, your senses were now alert at the possibility of having to break character and use your powers.
âStay in character or the whole bar turns on us.â Zemo whispered into your ear and grabbed onto your hand before you could even think of doing anything.
Zemo got Bucky to back down and the bartender told you all that Selby was ready for your visit. Sam checked in with Bucky to which he responded with a curt nod.
As you made your way along the back end of the bar, you could see the stacks of cash all over a table and the armed guards that filled up every corner of the room.
âYou should know, Baron. People donât come into my bar and make demands.â Selby turned out to look like what you would imagine her to be. She sat comfortably on her couch with a dominant presence and seemed like she was not someone easy to deal with.
Zemo tried to reassure her that he was making offers not demands to quell her mood. Selby asked how Zemo was able to escape from prison and Zemo replied smugly on how people like them always found a way.
As Zemo tried to shift focus onto the order of business, Selby wasnât still into it. Making a comment about Samâs taller than usual height, Sam not knowing what to respond just nodded in silence.
She even purred at him teasingly before her eyes landed on you.
âWhoâs this pretty little thing you have here? Where are you from?â Selbyâs eyes narrowed in as you sense everyone starting to look flustered by the unexpected question. You were just meant to play a background character but didnât expect the sudden attention.
Biting your lips into a furtive grin, you snaked your hands around Samâs biceps. âDaddy picked me up from the club that I was working at. He says I am his one and only now.â
The men all tried to stop their jaws from dropping to the floor at your sweetly coy act. Who were you?
âHmmâŚâ Selby hummed while she looked you up and down. âYou can do better, sweetie,â Selby remarked smugly before giving a subtle gesture to herself.
Lips forming into an âoâ, you feigned a surprised reaction at the flattery. You tried to send a flirtatious look back so that Selby would be in a better mood.
Your act was rewarded when Selby grinned wider and asked Zemo for his offer. In exchange for information on the super-soldier serum, Zemo was willing to trade Bucky in pretence. He added how he would give Selby the codes word to control Bucky, treating him like an object.
A wave of anger started rushing through you as the scene unfolded and you glanced to see how Selby became more intrigued.
âHmm, I have plenty of strong men already working for me. What else can he offer?â Zemo was taken aback by Selbyâs words, thinking that she would already be interested in Bucky.
As the men were grappling to come up with a good response, you went on your first instinct and spoke up.
âWell he is rather handsome, isnât he?â Everyoneâs focus turned onto you and you took a breath to continue as Selby gave you an expecting look.
âNot as handsome as my daddy here but-â Walking around Sam, you headed towards Bucky who was trying to look unbothered but dying of curiosity on what you were about to do.
âHe seems like fun to play with.â You purred as you gazed at Buckyâs profile. You gestured for Bucky to face you and could see how he was still staying in character. Running your fingers down his five o'clock shadow, your eyes glinted as you batted your lashes flirtatiously before looking over your shoulder back at Shelby.
âYou canât help but imagine having a good time with him. Super soldier serum should have some perks, no?â Your hidden innuendo was loud and clear to everyone in the room. If this didnât appeal to Selby, you didnât know what will.
Sam was trying his hardest to maintain his expression as he couldnât believe his ears. Never in a million years would he think the sweet and innocent Y/N he knew actually dared to speak like that.
Bucky did his best to tighten his jaw and continue his stoic facade to hide the shock from what you had just said.
Never did he thought you would take the situation to such a turn. Your improv was unexpected and he couldnât believe the woman in front of him was actually you.
Your sudden bold and cheeky persona was doing something to him. Your innuendo about him started to make him feel hot in his ears. Bucky had to clench his fist tightly to get himself to hold it together as he felt his heart racing out of nowhere.
He didnât know what was happening to him but he knew you were having some sort of effect on him.
âOf course, thatâs my silly opinion.â Turning to face Selby with a mischievous smile to keep up your character, you noted her looking at you thoughtfully as she rubbed her chin.
âNot just pretty but youâre witty, arenât you?â Selby noted as she grinned like a Cheshire cat. Satisfied with your input, Selby then revealed what she knew about the super-soldier serums.
Apparently, there was a doctor, Dr William Nagel who has been helping the power broker to create the serums here in Madripoor. When Zemo tried to probe further about Nagelâs location, Selby decided that Zemo was overstepping.
In the very next moment, you could hear a vibration of a phone and saw Sam reaching out to his jacket.
Great, all of your covers might be blown. Selby demands that Sam answered it on speaker. The tension in the room could be cut with a knife. To carry on the act, Sam reluctantly proceeded to answer the phone.
A womanâs voice came up and in the next sentences spoken, you realised that she was his sister, Sarah. Oh boy, this wouldnât end well. You closed your eyes in prayer as you hoped it can go over smoothly.
Taking a sharp intake of breath, you looked to see Bucky glancing down in shared unease. Sam was doing his best to make sure his cover wonât get blown. You thought all was going well but when you heard Samâs name from Sarah, you knew you were all toast.
Selby immediately called for all of you to be killed and in that moment, all hell broke loose. Selby got shot in a blink of an eye and her guards were up in action. Bucky pushed you behind him protectively as he fought off Selbyâs men.
Once all her guards are dealt with, Zemo called for weapons to drop and you took the back exit.
Making a swift escape, all of you tried to play it cool while taking long quick strides. The sound of the first gunshot made you jumped and sprang into a run. You saw Zemo took off in another direction but you didnât have time for him.
You, Bucky and Sam decided to sprint ahead. âI canât run in these heels.â Sam cried out and you retorted in annoyance.
âHow do you think I feel? Mineâs twice as taller than yours!â
Bucky reached over to grab your hand and interlocked your fingers together. His super-speed was practically lifting you off the ground, dragging you like a rag dog.
"Hey! What the hell man? What about me?" Bucky ignored Sam's whining and focused on not letting your hand go.
Not knowing where you are headed, a sense of dread started pouring on you and you grew anxious by the second. People on motorbikes were starting to drive up behind you three.
You were wondering if itâs time to not give care and actually use your powers for real this time. All of a sudden, the two people on the bikes behind you have been shot by someone from above and you stopped in your tracks to locate that individual, fearing you were next.
Zemo reappeared from the shadows and claimed that you all might have a guardian angel.
âDrop it, Zemo.â The familiar voice brought relief as you matched it to the face that emerged into your sight.
Your smile at the thought of a friendly face faltered when she continued pointing a gun towards all of you. Sharon didnât seem as pleased as you were. Turns out she had to fall off the grid and found herself in Madripoor after the turn of events many years ago.
"Y/N, is that you?" She took a double-take on you, probably not used to seeing you dress up like this.
"Hey." You awkwardly replied. The moment didn't last as Sharon trained her eyes on the men and continued to be hostile.
Your heart dropped as you hear her telling of how she was unable to be in contact with her family anymore. She had become a fugitive and still is. An immense amount of guilt washed all over you when she retorted about how she wasnât backed by the Avengers.
You werenât batch mates with Sharon back in S.H.I.E.L.D academy but you became friends when you crossed paths during work. You could not believe you havenât reached out to her all this time.
Bucky pleaded with Sharon for her help and Sharon gave a thoughtful look at all of you. When she saw you with your uncomfortable expression, she gave a sighed and stated that she wasnât done discussing the topic.
Offering refuge in her place at High Town, all of you accept it.
You sat beside her in the front and the two of you exchanged silent looks before she started the engine. What were the odds of seeing her again in Madripoor?
You hoped to be able to get a chance to talk to her later.

A Deconstruction of The Flame Keeperâs Circle & The Audienceâs Common Complaints | Catgirl
As the title states, Iâve been reminded of a couple complaints made about this episode that stem from a large portion of the audienceâs general disliking of the way both Ben and Julie were handled during the run of Ultimate Alien. In fact, I recently read a "review" of âThe Flame Keeper's Circle,â or, more of a parody, actually, since a review would actually have some kind of substance to it and not just...a slew of insults thrown at a show you claim to like. It's almost like you're looking for something to be mad at, but anyway.
One of those was the OP actually asking someone to (probably joking, but anyway) explain "how Ben's mind works" to them.
And I was like, gladly!
According to the comments under the review, it seems like the general audience didn't really like this episode all that much when it first aired. Which, I bring up because, I on the other hand, actually did. And for a reason: because it proves my previous defence points right.
There's a lot of talk about Ben coming off as a âjerkâ or a âdouchebagâ...but, in a situation such as the one presented within âThe Flame Keeperâs Circle,â I would argue he did exactly what he should have done. So that's where I beg to differ.
This episode puts Ben in a position where he, once again, needs to deal with the overlap of a romantic relationship and his priorities as a superhero. The only reason there is conflict here is because they are both important to him.
A bad boyfriend would only care about himself, but Ben clearly cares about not only the safety of his (clearly, quite naive) girlfriend, but also the safety of the rest of the earth. Which, as Iâm going to be stating several times, should be something expected of him considering everything else within the series that establishes who he is as a character.
So, on the topic of things that are important, ask yourselves, why would Ben prioritize going along with Julie's idea of joining a cult more than keeping her, and the rest of the world, safe when he realizes the trouble she could potentially be getting herself into?
Throughout the episode, and the fandomâs discussions from what Iâve seen, there is so much focus on "oh, he laughed at her idea so he's a douchebag and therefore a bad boyfriend" and not enough focus on the fact that he's not blindly following an alleged âgood causeâ because he isn't naive and that's in character based on everything we know about him as a character.
Context matters. And this kind of thing only further makes me question the people who want to cry "inconsistent" writing or characterization because he's acting the way he's been conditioned to.
Arguably from the age of ten, Ben's been dealing with situations where he needed to fight to survive and decide who to trust. Sometimes he trusted the wrong person, which wasn't done out of any other reason besides wanting to help and do the "right thing."
For example, Michael Morningstar in the episode âAll That Glitters,â who fooled Ben and his team into thinking he was innocent all while abusing school girls for their life energy and almost killing Ben's cousin.
Or, Simian in âBirds of a Feather," who fooled Ben into thinking he was royalty and into helping him steal something that would aid the Highbreed in their mass murder plot.
In that way, Ben and Julie could have related in this situation because they were both trusting people in the interest of doing something âgood.â Both Michael and Simian made Ben believe that they had something in common, or a common goal they could work together to reach. But, he trusted them blinded by his ambition and drive to save the world. Much like Julie is blinded by the promise of being a part of a group trying to make the world a better place.
As such, Ben has made the mistake before, so he's extra weary of how things could go very wrong. He's not against his girlfriend just to be a âjerkâ - he's been through things like this before, and weâve seen him go through those things.
Furthermore, the situation in which Julie is trusting The Flame Keeperâs Circle involves her indirectly agreeing to work with Vilgax. Who, as anyone familiar with Ben should know, is one of if not Benâs biggest, and more importantly, most dangerous enemy.
Again, she, at the beginning didnât know that he was involved, or what Ben had gone through already to make him act the way he does in this situation, but she does know what his job entails at this point in the series. She should probably infer that heâs suspicious for a good reason, as should the audience.
Not trusting people blindly is something he learned from being the leader of his team, while trying to protect the earth, namely from the Highbreed invasion back in Alien Force when he was putting together a stronger team. It would only make sense for him to then apply that to a situation in which his significant other gets roped into that which he fights against.
Speaking of fighting against, that brings me to another odd criticism of the writing of this episode. Itâs no surprise that the flawed belief of Ben coming off as an alleged âsociopathâ is brought up again, considering this episode takes place after The Ultimate Kevin arc. And yes, I realize the problematic connotations of using that term as a borderline insult as part of the issue here. But that aside, in this episode, the fact that he begins to fight Vilgax in his apparent âweakenedâ state is what is being attributed to that description.
Besides the fact that defending Vilgax is questionable in itself, heâs never needed water to survive for the many times he actually tried to kill Ben. I canât find a solid answer from a writer that knows for certain if his need for water is genuine except for one who is only assuming that is the case when heâs in this state.
But regardless, (since he clearly survived long enough to morph with Dagon and become a bigger threat to the earth later on) we are still defending Vilgax the LITERAL INTERGALACTIC WARLORD.
Yâknow, the guy whoâs only in this position because of his own immoral actions? Who absolutely would not hesitate to take advantage of his opponent's weakened state in order to further get away with his immoral actions? Such as he is in this very episode, taking advantage of the people wrongfully worshiping him?
If we are trying to imply that Ben is âjust as bad as Vilgax,â then I would assume youâd easily find the flaw in that being Benâs motivation for incapacitating a dangerous offender who is, at the moment, manipulating naive humans to work for him and help him continue get away with his immoral actions. Which is, needless to say, not the same as Vilgax, at all.
Again, youâd think thatâd be obvious.
The Flame Keeperâs Circleâs mission is to end human suffering and find a solution to certain issues happening across the globe with the help of alien technology that is much more advanced than what everyday people are used to. And, while the end goal seems like a good cause, even something Ben as a superhero would be all for, the means through which they attempt to get there arenât a good idea, at all.
A lot of people find it hard to navigate the use of technology considered advanced by human standards in the real world, so you can only imagine the various things that could go wrong if those kinds of people were suddenly exposed to something much more powerful. In short, a lot could go wrong.
Again, Ben has been in that exact position as soon as he was armed with the Omnitrix. Which is exactly why heâd see the flaw in what these people are trying to do, and therefore not be convinced that itâs such a good idea to allow them to continue, much less endorse it.
This is why I love when the writers actually allow Ben to speak for himself instead of cutting him off for drama or plot. Once he actually gets a word in, or more accurately, has his moment of heroic monologue, he makes himself very clear and, I think, only further proves what Iâm trying to say about him.
Here he is, explaining exactly what Iâve been trying to highlight throughout this body of work:
Ben: âEven if Dagon was real, using alien technology to accelerate a planetâs natural development wonât bring utopia, itâll bring disaster. Itâs happened before. Why do you think the Plumbers have those laws? But even thatâs not the point, because that isnât Dagon! His name is Vilgax. Heâs not a hero, heâs a selfish, evil warlord whoâs using you. And if you let him get in his ship, heâs going to fly off and start an interstellar civil war.â
Itâs not that only he can use alien technology to save the world, itâs that his status as a hero proves that he knows what heâs doing, unlike these businessmen in fancy robes leading a cult for profit.
That is not what I would have assumed reasonable people would consider âdouchebag behaviour.â Thatâs actually smart, and going back to my first point, exactly what he should be doing in a situation like this.
The actual episode does end off on a positive note for both Ben and Julie, which is omitted from the review and most of the comments I have read from others on the topic. And, I bring it up because itâs actually vital to wrap up everything brought up within this episode that I have just expanded on. Not only because they make up and seem to understand each otherâs perspective after all is said and done, but because they both agree to be open to further discussion on the topic, as Ben offers to go out for dinner.
Which, needless to point out I hope, but once again, is not âdouchebag behaviour.â

- What if Caligula defeated Apollo and became the new sun god?
- What if Nero managed to convince Meg in betraying Apollo once again?
- What if Commodus managed to destroy the Waystation?
- What if the Triumvirate won the battle against Apollo?
I got extremely carried away since I've thought about this for a long time. Everythings under the cut not only because it turned out to be long, but also so I can warn you that it gets pretty dark.
Caligula defeating Apollo
Medea successfully took Apollo's immortal essence.
With her fancy spellwork, Caligula now has the combined powers of Apollo and Helios.
Ave, Neos Helios!
And history repeats itself- the Triumvirate goes to civil war.
Commodus allies with Caligula
Python switches sides from Nero to Caligula
There was a scene in the book where Python was all "if there's a new sun in the west-" to Nero and that basically implied Python would no longer support Nero if Caligula succeeded.
New Rome would've fallen, either the same way as it did in Tyrant's Tomb or by the sheer power of Caligula and Commodus' army, money, weaponry, you name it (bc tbf they could've won if Rick didn't hold back). And possibly sooner than in the books unless Caligula still wants to slow his arrival and drink his Shirley Temple.
Any survivors are now on Caligula's side.
Meanwhile, Nero's desperate although he's hiding that desperation as much as he can.
Meg's no longer in control of Apollo and MIA over in California.
But, she has the Meliai.
Nero knows the reason Meg and her father ended up in New York. Because Caligula burned their home down. Because of how her father was working on something important and powerful, Caligula viewed that as a threat. He probably knew about the seeds and what they were, same as Caligula.
And Caligula knows that Nero knows.
Meg McCaffrey is the one who can change the odds, even slightly.
Realistically, she'd never want to go back to Nero or help Caligula. But Nero might be able to talk her into his side. She could equally decide to help Camp Half-Blood.
Caligula, Medea, Commodus, Python vs Nero vs CHB
Assuming Caligula is in control of Herophile, Harpocrates, and the Oracle of Cumae, then not only does he still have the power of prophecy but also the communications are still down for the demigods.
No matter how you want to dice it, Caligula wins overall by the sheer amount of power and resources on his side.
What would stop him from ordering to kill Meg on sight, simply firing an onager at camp (and it working bc Octavian isn't there to catapult himself to the sky), and winning against a full-fledged fight against Nero?
Maybe the gods but that's on if they decide to work with Camp Half-Blood to begin with. Rick's characterization via reactions on Apollo's return makes them iffy, but I'd really like to believe they at have a heart for their children, Jason, and Apollo. They stand a good chance if they side together in the end and it shows they actually learned the message of not letting the kids do all the work and appreciating them.
Maybe even the Waystation could help, provided that Commodus doesn't destroy them first.
If Caligula won, then it's just taking out Commodus and Python if he wants sole power.
If he lost, then there's a lot of mourning, the numbers of survivors are small, but there's a new appreciation and a better environment for the demigods.
Meg betraying Apollo
At any point in the series, Nero could have convinced her to betray Apollo but the two more likely times are in the Dark Prophecy- before she escaped to find Apollo and at the end of the book when after everything they've been through together all it took was being back in Nero's environment to get her back into being his pawn.
And as Apollo mentions multiple times in the series, Meg has the power to command him to kill himself. So, it wouldn't end well for Apollo.
If it were the first one, then it would be less emotional and painful on both parties, but it would still hurt.
The only person on Apollo's side from the beginning turned out to be a traitor. He'd have support from his children, but that doesn't change how she helped him.
The only escape from Nero that Meg had was no longer beside her and there was enough convincing to happen to convince Meg it was for the better.
Apollo still has a chance of restoring his immortality, especially if Lityerses became his companion in replacement so Apollo's not alone.
Meg would just be out to get him throughout his trials.
If it were towards the end, it would be more emotional.
Both lose their friend, ally, and their greatest supporter.
Domino effect to Nero's favor. Camp Half-Blood falls first. The rest of New Rome and the Waystation is next. Possibly Olympus if he wanted to go that far but if he doesn't want to push his luck then he still is powerful and the Olympians might be content that at least they are still standing.
Nero gets a swifter rise to power because Caligula and Commodus are already eliminated and Nero has their combined powers.
And Python rules from a backseat.
Ave imperator! Ave Caesar!
Commodus destroys the Waystation
Unlike before, Commodus has proven he could be a threat.
Especially if Apollo never got the chance to blind him.
There isn't much seen with him being someone who plans ahead and willing to just fight without the flashiness so I'm not entirely sure if being the sole ruler is in his favor.
He does, however, turn the tides in either Caligula or Nero's favor depending on who he decided to support. He still is part of the Triumvirate with wealth and resources, regardless of his want to provide a show and have fun.
If he sided with Caligula, then after the demigods and Nero are taken care of, Commodus would be next on Caligula's list.
Same if he sided with Nero.
The only real chance Commodus has of winning big is if he destroyed the Waystation before Apollo destroyed the oracle and if Commodus manages to capture Apollo first.
Apollo and Commodus seem to both at least remember how they were before Apollo drowned him.
Maybe manipulation via that way?
Either way, I can't say much for Commodus so this one's shorter than the rest. I can see anything happening, from him achieving co-emperor at best to still losing everything at worst.
Triumvirate vs Apollo
This one entirely depends on which battle.
Assuming that all the three emperors are alive, then the story changes at the latest in the Tyrant's Tomb. Specifically, Caligula and Commodus are actually still alive despite Frank's sacrifice.
And they show up at the end, weak, but alive.
Because unless you count that picture Rachel got of them in a penthouse that was blurry, there was never a scene where all of them were together which isn't fair. Then again, Rick was the one who invented overpowered emperors in the series so that was probably a conscious decision to make it easier for Apollo.
The soonest would be immediately after The Hidden Oracle, where Nero could supply help to Commodus since he would know that would be Apollo and Meg's destination.
This one would be short because this is an equally open-ended question.
But if they actually helped each other first, things don't look good for Apollo or the demigods.
They might spare the demigods for the specific purpose of ruling over them.
If they continued to share their victory, then their empire is still split three ways.
If they decided to go all civil war, then as the first two triumvirates of Roman history went, the weakest go down first and the main two hash it over a lot of battles.
Caligula would still have Medea, so he has the means of magic.
And Nero would still have Python. Tbh, not sure if that snake even has powers of prophecy. But either way, Python was Nero's ally from the beginning.
I'd say the only thing stopping the triumvirate from complete control is once again, Olympus itself.
Especially if Meg's alive and inspires everyone to avenge Jason and Apollo.
Bonus~
Caligula as the sole emperor includes paranoia that someone betrays him since he was originally killed by his own guards. He might be able to rule the people as well as he did when he first became emperor (back in ancient Rome, the first few months of his rule he was well-loved until he became ill). If anything else, you can count on the yachts being his palace. Incitatus might be by his side because they might part ways since Incitatus wants horses to rule the world in the books. Caligula might renovate New Rome to his liking and upgrade it with his personal wealth.
Commodus as sole emperor involves Commodianapolis and a football stadium where he can host games. A lot of wealth being poured into grandeur, parties, and Commodus' name and likeness everywhere.
Nero as sole emperor means the Imperial Household is there to stay. From what I gather, there are twelve children to replace the twelve Olympians. I don't they're exactly all are children/legacies, but I could be wrong. Either way, Nero has them to help him enforce the rules. He has his tower and he's conveniently near Olympus and Camp Half-blood. He could decide to expand in Manhattan and Long Island.

A summer knight
Chapter 1/8:
It was a perfectly beautiful day before everything went to shit.
The sun shined, the birds sang. If there was ever a good time to be out hunting for monstersâthis was it.
Of course, there was never a good time to hunt for monsters.
Geralt steadied his sword and locked gazes with the fey-hound, itâs silver eyes challenging the witcher to attack first. Geralt was already dripping with the blue inners of the first beast brave enough to strike. He seized his opening and rushed at the monster. His silvered sword reflected the warm sunlight as it came crashing down, almost separating the houndâs head from its neck.
He heard a yelp from behind him. Quickly, Geralt turned to see the final beast pinning Jaskier against a tree. It was advancing slowly and let out a low growl as it sized up its prey.
âNice doggy, good doggy! Iâm really not very tastyâmostly just bones. Shit,â He paused his babbling, âdogs like bones. Geralt! Help!â Jaskier yelled, shielding his lute behind his body.
Geralt huffed. That stupid bard would rather die than let anything happen to that damnable lute.
The fey-hound was only a few paces away from Jaskier now. Its chest expanded as its lung filled with Jaskierâs scent, like it was sampling a fine whiskey before downing the glass. The beast paused for a terrible moment, giving Geralt a window. He ran towards the hound, hoping he had enough time before it lunged.
Instead, the beast remained in place. Rather than attack, it raised up its head, flesh stretching too tightly over horn and bone, and let out a terrible howl.
Both Geralt and Jaskier dropped to their knees as the sound ripped through the forest. The howl crashed through his skull, his heightened senses all screaming out and adding to the cacophony. All he could do was cover his ears with his hands, his sword now lying uselessly a few feet away.
Why were jobs so much more complicated when the bard was involved?
Geralt should have been realized trouble was coming when he ran into Jaskier earlier that day. They had parted ways a while back. Jaskier had some fancy party, and Geralt had to be anywhere else.
Their parting had resulted in gone months of blissful silence. Just him, Roach, and a bunch of dead monsters. Geralt had been on the road for a week before coming to any semblance of civilization. Out of hunger, and desperate need for a bath, he decided to stop in a town which looked like every small town before it.
There was little point in even learning the name. Trying to keep the âbergsâ straight would likely take more time than he spent in most places. Small towns came with small problems and small payments. Life was uncomplicated. The reward money was enough to get a few nights at a warm inn, if he was lucky.
However, sometimes an old ghost story turned out to be more Litch than tall tale. A very pissed off Litch. Those were the jobs that made Geralt weary of taking an âold family heirloomâ as payment. Potions costs money, and grandmaâs fake pearls wonât do the apothecary any good. So here he was, in need of work, to get some coin, to pay for lodging so he could survive the next job. What a life. The old bar was packed for a mid-afternoon. Geralt had half expected to be chased out or given a hard time. Usually he had better luck blending in with the locals once everyone had already had a few pints.
In broad daylight, thigs were different. His otherness contrasted with small town life and he rarely gave any mind to being asked to leave with less than kind words. Things had gotten better following the Bards âpublic relationsâ efforts, but still he was as likely to be on the sharp end of a pick fork as he was a job.
Two dozen people were crowded inside the tiny tavern. All of them transfixed on the musician seated opposite the bar. No one had even turned to look at him looming in the doorway. Geralt hadnât paid the performer any mind. He saddled up to the bar.
âWhat can I get you, friend?â The bar keeper asked over his shoulder, without so much a glance.
âAle,â Geralt grumbled, âAnd a job.â His voice was horse from weeks of disuse. Roach wasnât the most vocal companion.
The barkeep poured ale from the cask and turned to face the witcher, he didnât look surprised by Gerald appearance. In fact, he looked amused.
âI didnât know the Bardâs White Wolf was traveling with him. Iâm sure the ladies will be pleased.â The man cocked a bushy eyebrow as he slid the mug over.
Geralt huffed. âI not traveling with anyone.â
âWell then itâs quite the coincidence. The bards been crooning about the White Wolf for a week or so and the young lads and ladies have been eating it up.â He gestured over to where the music is coming from with his chin. âI canât complain though, good for business.â
Geralt turned and listened. He still couldnât see the bard, but he had doubt about who it was. The lute playing was exquisite. Geralt knew fuck all about music, but he doubted many traveling musicians could play like they were trained at Oxenfurt.
âI do have something up your alley, witcher.â The man leaned in. âThereâs been wild dogs heard in the woods. Terrible things, it started a few nights back and people are already losing their herds.â âGet a huntsman.â Geralt grumbled. He wasnât about to start killing wolves for coppers. It wasnât worth the trouble.
The barkeep shook his head, âYou misunderstand. These arenât dogs. Old man Richardson saw them eat a whole cow. Said they had great horns and devilâs tails-- like they crawled out of hell.â âThey only come out at night?â
âNo, people have been seeing them at twilight. I think we could get a pool going if you get rid of them. We donât have much but the wool trade has been pretty good. I figure we could cobble together 50 gold.â
Geralt looked him in the eye and gave him a nod. The barkeep looked relieved.
âthank you, Master witcher.â
He took a swig of ale. Dogs with tails, fine. Dogs with horns? Less fine. Hopefully the old man was half blind and this would be the easiest 50 gold Geralt had ever made.
Geralt sat back on his stool and took a moment to listen, really listen to Jaskierâs playing. Might as well enjoy something about the bardâs evadible company.
He had to admit it was beautiful. More so, it was textured. The bass notes thrummed with life, while the high intricate melodies wove a birdâs song. Did Jaskier always play like this? Geralt felt the tune tug at his chest, like the ocean waves pulling him from shore. Maybe so long in silence wasnât good for him after all.
It wasnât long before the solo ended and the gathered crowd erupted in applause.
âThank you, thank you. Remember to tip your bar keep.â Jaskier laughed over the clapping and hollering. âIâll be back later tonight for another set! See you all again soon!â
Slowly the crowd dispersed. A moment later, Geralt was acutely aware of a presence standing behind him.
âDo my eyes deceive me, or is that Geralt of Rivia day drinking?â A hand clapped him on the shoulder. âHow have you been you big wolf! Kill anything worth writing about?â Jaskier plopped onto a stool next to Geralt. He was glowing from an after performance high. His face was lightly flushed, Geralt could see the faint pink of his cheeks deepening to a dark red lower below his shirt-
Geralt downed his drink.
âAh yes, excellent Idea. Francis,â He gestured to the bartender, âme and my dashing companion would like another round.â
Geralt waved a hand, stopping the barkeep âNo. I need to get to the woods before dusk.â
Jaskier lit up. âA hunt! Geralt, can I come? It been so long since I have seen you in action. I miss the swoosh of your blade, the ways your muscles ripple under yourââ
Geralt coughed. The keeper was suddenly very interested in cleaning a glass at the opposite side of the bar.
âYou canât come, itâs dangerous. I donât even know what these things are.â
âEven more reason to have me along! I can be there to chronical the beast. Youâll be too busy,â Jaskier paused to think, âStabbing and slashing?â He offered, âIâll be there observing. When have I ever gotten in your way?â
Geralt could think of at least 50 times the bard had gotten in his way.
Instead he grunted in resignation.
âOh thank you Geralt! You wonât regret it!â
The terrible howl continued to rip through the forest. Yet, the beast made no move to attack.
Against his instincts, Geralt managed to scramble to his feet. He grabbed for his blade and charged the creature. He used his shoulder and knocked it to its side, stopping the horrible sound.
The hound righted itself and focused its attention on the witcher. It reared up on its hind legs, its teeth pulled back into a hideous snarl, ready to pounce.
In a flash, it lunged. Geralt deflected the beast and used his momentum to cleave the outstretched limb. The hound fell back with an infernal cry. Jaskier side-stepped to avoid being struck by the newly liberated leg.
âWatch it!â Jaskier yelled. He swiped some blue blood off his doublet.
Geralt grunted and steadied his blade. The hound was bleeding, yet it looked as if it would make another attack. He didnât give it a chance.
With the last of his speed, Geralt drove his sword through the creatureâs neck. It dropped to the ground. Blue blood soaked the earth underneath.
The two panted for a moment, catching their breath.
âWhat, pray tell, are those?â Jaskier asked. He poked at the dead houndâs skull with his boot.
Geralt had the unfortunate displeasure of know exactly what these things were.
âFey hounds.â He grumbled. Geralt started cutting off one of the beasts heads. It was slow going. His blade didnât work well on Feycreatures. He was going to need iron, a lot of it. Hopefully one head would be enough to show he killed the pack. â Itâs not good. They donât usually leave the Feywilds. They definitely donât leave the Feywilds to eat sheep.â
âSo why are they here, Geralt?â Jaskier seemed curious.
Geralt shrugged. Usually Feyhouds meant that the Fey were not close behind. He had his dealing with The Courts before, and decided that the least interaction the better. Of course, he probably wouldnât get his way. The howl was a signal. Signaling what, Geralt hadnât the foggiest.
The only thing he knew that he needed to collect his payment and leave this town so that it could be another witcherâs problem.
âI thought fairies were stories?â Jaskier asked, innocently. âMy mother used to tell me the most delightful--
Geralt raised a hand, cutting him off. âDonât call them that. And the Fae are never delightfulâ He stood up and stuffed the head in a bag.
âPeople say that about witchers, and I find you quite charming.â
Geralt rolled his eyes, and started making his way back to town.

the stars that shine - Ch 1
Fic Summary:Â âEva, darling, Dorian has a few questions for you,â Lysandra interrupted. She tilted her head as she looked Hollin over, an eerily animalistic quality in her gaze. âWill you be attending the same classes?â
He turned his head to Dorian. âWill I be what?â
His brother took a sip of wine. âIâm sure I told you about this. Evangeline will be staying with us for the next few months to expand her education.â Placing the glass down, he looked at the girl in question with clear affection in his eyes. ------ Coming of age in a post-war world could never be easy. Growing up under the watchful eye of Erilea's most powerful and famous heroes is just a little bit harder. Figuring out what the hell they're supposed to do in this big, wide world might require a little more teamwork than either of them realize.
Ch 2 here.
Chapter 1: just two kids
The first time they met, neither of them knew what the hell was going on. The adults spoke in whispers and shed tears that they couldnât understand, being only eleven years old. Evangeline grew tired of hiding behind Lysandra and clinging to Aedion; she wanted to explore this massive palace that served as her temporary home. Aelin had insisted that they all remain together for a few weeks after her coronation, giving them all some time to figure out how to be a court and a family.
For once, Evangelineâs short stature helped her as she ducked behind people and columns until she found the exit. She picked a direction at random, happy to wander around the hallways and take in the dĂŠcor, even if some of it looked worse for wear. She hummed to herself as she walked, so focused on absorbing every piece of Terrasen that she could glean from the paintings that hung proudly (if not a bit slanted).
Terrasen. Her new kingdom. Evangeline had never felt any sort of connection to Adarlan. No one had ever held her hand at a celebratory parade or taught her the national song, if there even was such a thing. Her childhood contained no memories of pride or patriotism, nothing beyond a lingering resentment for what her parents did to survive.
âEvangeline! What are you doing away from the party?â She nearly jumped out of her skin at that cheery voice, her eyes darting up to meet the Kingâs kind smile. Dorian might have deserved her patriotism, if Lysandra and her had remained in Rifthold.
âI was exploring.â She shifted her weight a couple times. Although his face was kind, she really didnât know him that well. And grown men, especially those with power, cause her to clam up. She remembered her manners just in time to add: âI hope Iâm not disturbing you, Your Majesty.â
He waved a hand. âPlease, just Dorian. Weâve all been through too much for fancy titles, donât you think? We were just about to say our goodbyes and head out.â
At his statement, Evangeline finally noticed the boy sulking behind Dorian. Hollin didnât acknowledge her at all, never even looked at her despite their similar age and forced proximity. She shoved down her irritation, choosing to be the mature and polite one.
âAre you excited to go home?â she asked sweetly, staring directly at the prince. He continued to study the wall next to him, ignoring her yet again, until Dorian shoved his shoulder lightly.
Hollin sighed in a way that made Evangelineâs blood boil. âI cannot wait to sleep in a chamber that doesnât look like it might collapse on me in my sleep,â he answered, scrunching his nose in disgust.
Her eyes widened. She could have died, not a full two weeks ago, during the final battle against the Valg and Hollin was complaining about the state of his bedroom? Hundreds of replies ran through her mind, most of them including telling him where he could shove that selfish opinion--
âWhat my brother means to say, is that he wishes Terrasen a speedy recovery after so many trials,â Dorian interjected, placing his hand on Hollinâs shoulder. His grip tightened as he steered his younger brother around Evangeline, mouthing a quick âsorryâ as they passed. âI hope you know that youâre welcome in Adarlan at any time. Until next time!â
âThank you,â Evangeline replied uncertainly, spinning on her heel to watch them walk away. She still couldnât truly say how she felt about Dorian, but she had never been more grateful for the crown on his head. At the very least, it kept that nasty little boy from having any sort of power he would surely abuse.
She kept walking. Sparing a glance over her shoulder to make sure they no longer lingered, Evangeline pushed into the chambers the royals had just vacated. She wasnât snooping, just curious if their bed was bigger than hers.
The room was in perfectly fine condition, maybe lacking some of the over-the-top amenities that the former conquering nation of Adarlan could afford. She peeked into the first bedroom and let out a small gasp. So Aelin had given them nicer accommodations. The bed was massive, even bigger than Aedionâs bed (which Lysandra snuck into every night when she thought Evangeline was asleep). Logically, the larger man deserved the larger bed, right?
She looked into the next bedroom. This one was much more comparable to her room, only containing a queen-size mattress and a dresser. Evangeline ran her fingers along the silk sheets, wondering if it would be selfish to ask for these chambers for herself. She might enjoy having the space to herself, and Lysandra might not feel so guilty about spending time with her beloved.
A ray of the setting sun cut through the curtains, reflecting sharply off something in the corner of her eye. There, mostly hidden beneath the dresser, was a small piece of metal. Evangeline dropped to her knees and reached for it, fingers closing around the wiry texture.
It was a ship. Fashioned out of a long piece of aluminum that may have once been a large kitchen utensil. She examined the trinket, trying to imagine how one might have bent the shape hundreds of times to form a tiny replica of the boats that floated in the docks of Ilium.
Evangeline happened to love trinkets and tiny things, so she shoved it in her pocket, considering todayâs exploration a wonderful success.
---
Hollin stared at the feast in front of him, wanting nothing more than to snatch up a plate full of food and run to his rooms to devour it in peace. Unfortunately, if he vacated his hiding spot behind one of the larger ice chests, the kitchen staff would surely see him and report his location to Queen Mother Georgina. And then she would surely force him back into the dining room to rejoin the most boring conversation he had ever had to sit through.
As part of his education, Hollinâs tutor taught him the importance of treating guests with civility and respect through proper socialization. While the prince normally managed to suffer through an entire dinner without running away, Hollin simply couldnât pretend any longer. Not after he stayed up almost until dawn the night before, completely caught up in a new research project.
And although the prince had managed great strides in the two years since the war, shedding some of his more immature and selfish tendencies, he had never learned how to love a crowd the way his brother could. Dorian positively thrived in front of an audience, telling witty stories and navigating even the trickiest of topics with an easy smile.
He watched the head chef finish plating the soups, adding a fried green leek to each bowl. Hollinâs stomach growled, hidden by the noise of crashing plates and rolling carts.
âHollin!â A sharp voice cut through the clatter. âIf youâre in here, come out at once before you embarrass us any further.â
âFuck,â he muttered. His mother had caught on to his hiding spot far too quickly. Rather than facing the indignation of getting literally dragged out of the corner by the indignant queen, he stood and brushed the lint of his pants.
Walking towards where Georgina stood, her arms crossed, Hollin searched his mind for any excuse that might explain his absence. âI wasnât feeling well?â
âI planned on serving dinner as soon as the last guest arrived, but now everyone had to wait. Does that make you happy?â she demanded, reaching over to shove some of his hair back. âRemind me to send Donya your way tomorrow. This is getting out of hand.â
Hollin preferred his hair long, brushing his forehead and the back of his neck, but there was no arguing with her. âThe dinner?â he prompted, warding off any further complaints about his appearance.
âGo, now. I need to run a final check on everything.â She made a shooing gesture with her hands. Hollin ran out the door at that point, marveling at how much better the dinner party sounded after one simple interaction with his mother.
Pushing through the swinging doors, he was relieved to find most people standing around, finishing up their chatter and their drinks. Darting past a couple of particularly dull nobles and keeping his head down to avoid detection, Hollin scanned the table for his name card.
âYour Highness!â He winced at the nasally voice of Lord Ramdon and the impending doom of yet another economic lecture. âI was just telling your brother about the effects of his new trade agreement on the price of coal over the next five--â
âPlease take your seats. Dinner will be served momentarily.â The voice rang out through the room, giving Hollin the opportunity to escape and finally sink into his seat, two chairs away from the head of the table.
Dorian slipped into the massive chair a moment later. âMother tracked you down?â he asked, offering Hollin a sympathetic look.
âObviously.â Hollin grabbed his napkin and threw it on his lap, a bit forcefully. âEnjoying the stimulating conversation tonight?â
Dorian laughed. âIt was getting a bit dull for awhile there. Thankfully, some more exciting guests showed up at the last minute-oh, speak of the devil!â He stood up, waving to someone over Hollinâs shoulder.
The prince stifled a groan. He glanced at the nametag to his right, at the same time as the person in question filled the seat.
âHello,â Evangeline smiled at him. âI didnât notice you when we first arrived.â
Aedion Ashryver and Lysandra Ennar took their places across the table, also smiling warmly at him. Hollin never understood how these people managed to be so happy all of the damned time. Something like jealousy always churned in his stomach when he saw the familiarity and love shared between them, as if a devastating war hadnât almost ripped them apart.
âI had a...prince thing to do.â He winced at how weak the words sounded. âI hope the journey was easy for you.â
âIt was! We travelled quite light for this visit, since itâs much more informal and last-minuteâ Evangeline perked up as she spoke, starting on a tangent about the route they had taken. In all his fourteen years, Hollin had never met a group of people who talked quite as much as Queen Aelinâs court.
At least he grew out of his snark and pettiness since he left Terrasen for the last time. He forced a polite smile on his face as she rambled.
âEva, darling, Dorian has a few questions for you,â Lysandra interrupted. She tilted her head as she looked Hollin over, an eerily animalistic quality in her gaze. âWill you be attending the same classes?â
He turned his head to Dorian. âWill I be what?â
His brother took a sip of wine. âIâm sure I told you about this. Evangeline will be staying with us for the next few months to expand her education.â Placing the glass down, he looked at the girl in question with clear affection in his eyes. âI wanted to know, are there any additional activities youâd like to pursue while in Rifthold? Perhaps something in the arts?â
âOh goodness, Iâd love that,â Evangeline gushed. âI know that the theater here is beyond what we have in Terrasen; Iâm sure thereâs so much to learn from the actors and writers there.â
Hollinâs head hurt. He knew that Dorian would try to force them to get along while she stayed with them, in some bizarre attempt to expose him to so-called good people.
Even after the king had dedicated his time to being an older brother, even though Hollin tried so hard to avoid being another problem Dorian had to handle, he would never garner the look of affection that Evangeline did. He would never be Dorianâs friend in a way the Terrasen court was.
âHollin attended one of the performances last week.â Dorian leaned forward, catching his brotherâs eye with a meaningful look. âPerhaps you could take a look at the upcoming schedule, recommend something for her.â
The meddling had begun a whooping five minutes into the first course.
âI would be happy to,â Hollin replied. âDo you have any particular interests?â
For better or for worse, that question set Evangaline off on another tangent. Dorian gave him a subtle thumbs up as she chattered away, returning his focus to Lysandra and Aedion.
Hollin took the reprieve gratefully, digging into his soup. He mentally calculated how many minutes stood between him and the final course, already considering the night a massive failure.

I never really followed up on the Tower of Sight worldbuilding post because honestly it started to feel like I was spamming you guys with something only one person had asked for, but Iâm going to take another crack at it in a more normal worldbuilding post format now, and see if it works. Four Apples Math Pie deserves the love even if they are one of like three people who actually want this lmao.
So for the most part, this setting (which I should probably name somehow although the people who live there just call it âthe world/groundâ same as us, hm) is somewhere around the late medieval/early modern turnover point in technology, though what that means varies a lot by region, but since itâs a different world with different specific constraints and history, plenty of things are different.
For example, gold and silver are only slightly rarer than copper, which is only slightly less common than iron, which is a lot less available than it is on Earth, which has an impact on what mass industrialization would look like even if it was pursued. Which it actually was once already, kind of, which has a big impact on current development of course. (Also on readily accessible mineral wealth lmao.)
This setting has one of those Ancient Precursor civilizations with the Lost Magic Technology, except itâs not a mystery what happened to themâa meteor impact caused a protracted darkness and several hundred years of Ice Age, and a low-level mass extinction event because when plants canât get sun the whole food chain collapses.
The people who hastily evacuated via magical space elevator to the colony theyâd been establishing on the moon thought they would be the only survivors, and once it was clear the world was in one piece and just not particularly habitable right now, they settled in to wait a few thousand years until it cleared up, so they could repopulate.(Thatâs as a society, not as individuals. Their average life expectancy is high, but likeâŚhobbit high, nothing fancy.)
They werenât the only survivors, but the people who got through the (literal) Dark Age and came out the other side had lost a lot, in terms of cultural knowledge and fancy magic and so on, although there are some magical things they got very very good at, which in many cases is directly linked to how they made it through.
(The dominant religion in a region can often be linked to the magical hyperspecialization that was most valuable to the local foodway during the later part of the Dark Age, though religion moves around a lot even when people donât, and people definitely have.)
As the climate eased up over time, though, they expanded and rebuilt, and about 200 hundred years ago had reached the point of arguing about whether 1) the moon had always been silvery-green or if it had once been plain silver and 2) wizard-kings had really run away to the moon to escape the Dark Age and turned it green, or that was just a fairy tale, when the Moon Peopleâs first attempt at recolonizing the surface happened.
They werenât really prepared for the number and organization of the peoples already there, if they were expecting anyone, and definitely werenât prepared to be polite about it, because as far as they were concerned they were the natural inheritors of the world and these mud-grubbers should be grateful for their wisdom. So it was nasty, but they did ultimately get their asses kicked, and retreated to the moon.
So now everyone on the surface knew that the moon really was inhabited, by super-magical assholes. (The Moon People have a bit of an elf aesthetic because low gravity means they run tall and slim, and they have ancient fancy magitek, but theyâre just people. Theyâre the same species.
For genre reasons theyâre not physically distinguishable from Earth humans; whether theyâre some very alternate dimension Earth or another planet in our dimension that happens to have the same people I may never disambiguate since both possibilities have plausibility issues in terms of real science, but itâs a genre staple dammit I can do this if I want.)
The wizardly order of astronomers known as the Watchers of the Sky got a big bump of prestige because no one had listened to them and their telescopes about the Moon People until it was too late, and now they were being counted on to keep an eye on the moon for further incursions.

WHO WANTS A SNIPPET OF A MEGS/OP FIC I ALMOST WROTE ALMOST TWO YEARS AGO?
plus some notes because, like I said, almost wrote it
also, trigger warning for brief mention of rape, nothing explicitÂ
murder too? kinda mild violence?Â
Also itâs more Megatronus/Optimus Prime....plus, slight time travel.
When Truth is Shattered (hope is built once more)
There's an Uprising, as there always is in a universe such as this. The rebellion is orchestrated by Megatronus being the kickass he is, poet, philosopher, warrior, slave and leader.Â
Prime is a title passed down via a fancy relic thing referred to as the Matrix of Leadership, but it's not merged with a spark, it's strung on a chain and worn, or usually displayed somewhere. It signifies the authority invested in someone, either individually or a group of individuals.
The Matrix also acts as an activation key for a great many forms of highly power technology that is rumored to have been created by Primus himself for the Original Thirteen Primes to use.
There's a really old bot called Alpha Trion who bestows it, takes it back and is generally the one who handles it, in between the periods of a new Prime or Council of Prime ascending. He's always been there, he's like super old so no one really questions him, his decisions, his impact on their society or anything at all.Â
Primus is thought to be something like a myth, Unicron as well. Most of their history of the early days of their civilization is a bit spotty, but their current level of technology cannot compete with what they possessed in the beginning and now lack the ability to craft or use.
Thatâs why the Matrix is a symbol of leadership as it can activate the technology, including the planetary shield, almost all offensive capabilities, several buildings that manufacture everything from basic building components to extremely energy intensive upgrades.
It is acknowledged history that there were thirteen Original Primes, even though only about half of their names are remembered. However all of their greatest deeds were recorded. So you had the Prime of This and That, when their names were lost to time.Â
So, save for the ruling few, the nobles, the first class and a majority of the second class citizens, things are bad.Â
Caste system, energon shortage, bad working conditions, (all of these unnecessary, used only as a means to control the populace because tired, hungry and illiterate people don't raise armies to overthrow the government) abuse of rights, those in power staying in power, inheriting power from family members and corruption running rampant through the levels of government.Â
Megatronus, former slave/miner turned gladiator, poet, philosopher and revolutionary raises his army and storms into Iacon in order to demand change, or put himself in charge. That is his end goal, but he's absolutely going to throw everyone in power into a deep dark hole somewhere if it's the only thing he manages to do.Â
The Prime in power, arrogant as all get out, challenges Megatronus and loses his head over it entirely. So Megatronus- who is absolutely an âif I can make god bleedâ kinda guy, yanks the Matrix from the corpse, throws it down and swings his sword down on it as hard as he can.Â
Miner, yes? Gladiator, yes? Yes? Very strong, we appreciate his strong, Matrix is strong enough to survive a very long time, but Megatronus is fueled by righteous fury and the rage of a thousand murdered slaves.
Alpha Trion screams in anguished horror as it shatters into fifty thousand itty bitty pieces. No more Matrix of Leadership, no more cheating to get around the systems lock on technology only meant to be worked by a Prime.
Sad day.
That's when everything lights up like the Americanâs fourth of July and from that light, a large mech in blue and red appears. Nice sleek lines, brilliant paint, very pretty, we also appreciate this. He's very confused, understandably, looking around in shock, bewilderment and some dawning sense of terror. But then he sees Alpha Trion.Â
Instantly he leaps to his pedes and reaches towards the old bot.
"Alpha Trion? Where- where am I? What- what is going on?"Â
Alpha Trion gets emotions, surprising for a bot responsible for so much suffering, the way he screamed shocked a great many people.
Megatronus and his high command all decide to observe because a new player has entered the equation and while everyoneâs attention is on him, it gives Megatronus a chance to move more people into a better positions.Â
Optimus is understandably very upset. He yanks his servos out of Alpha Trionâs grasp, ignoring as the botâs voice turns cajoling and pleading for him to calm down.Â
Alpha Trion stands before the new mech, servos grasping onto his and gently starts explaining some of the positives of the new Golden Age but that it's been a while since Optimus walked the planet and this is another Golden Age set a lot of Ages after the very first Golden Age.
And Alpha Trion carefully and quickly explains that Optimus was opposed to a thing that the rest of the thirteen primes were going to do and Megatronus decided to remove him because he was standing in the way of their glory, in the way of the greater good of Cybertron. He did not tell the others and ambushed Optimus-
"Megatronus! He- he," his voice dissolves into a static-y keening, digits digging harshly into the undamaged plating of the cover of his spark chamber. "He stabbed me? My spark? My- He?"
(Megatronus and company trade looks and swift messages)Â
-to which, Alpha Trion stresses, they were all very upset and Megatronus was duly punished-
-and buried his sword into his spark chamber. The others were alerted when Primus intervened to ensure Optimusâs spark didnât return to Him. But his frame was badly damaged and extreme measures were taken to ensure his survival.
Optimus doesn't take this well and decides to use his optics and turns and starts looking. He's standing in a place that is lavish and incredibly luxurious. There are dead people around him, in shiny and glimmering frames, and then there's a crowd of dirty, misshapen, mismash, ragtag, thrown together bots and he quickly jumps to the correct conclusion: the people are revolting against a corrupt leadership and-Â
Itâs Alpha Trion, shining and dazzling in the soft lights. Alpha Trion who was not a Prime but was granted a similar though lower security level and was treated like family. True, he was fashioned to be an assistant, a helper but this? Sitting in a throne at the right hand of the front of the room?
Optimus jerks his helm around and make optic contact with the largest mech, the one who stands in front of all the others at the head of the revolution.Â
Thereâs power in there that- that- reminds him...
Alpha Trion continues talking though and he's explaining that the rest of the Primes came together and fashioned a stasis orb to keep him alive while his frame repaired and his spark recovered. It was expanded and everything that was his was placed inside and then shrunk.
âWhy? Why am I alive?â
It hurts that Alpha Trion looks wrecked at the very idea that Optimus shouldnât be alive, right before rage crawls over his face plates and vibrates the air with the force of it.
He then starts to explain the people that stand behind him- but-
Theyâre terrorists and murderers, thieves- Megatronus the Name-Thief, who stole the name of the Betrayer who slaughtered the greatest of them!- liars and rabble raisers who started a war for fun, for profit and glory, to tear down the peace Alpha Trion so carefully crafted all these eons.Â
Megatronus feels denied his right place, demands more resources, more people, more space, more energon that simply isnât available! He would take what he wanted from the more deserving to fuel his army!Â
Optimus canât help the desperate look he makes as he turns back to take in the whole of these âterroristsâ. Theyâre all starving and wounded, clearly the forgotten and abandoned and his optics harden as he turns back to Alpha Trion.Â
âThey do not know their place! They should have remained in their caste, they are not worthy to be acknowledged even as third class citizens! They will ruin all I have built!â
That the matrix- which was composed of tech that kept Optimusâs Prime spark and frame alive and well and provided the required security clearance of a Prime to non-Primes so they could operate the tech meant solely for Primes. To some degree anyway. But after such an amount of time, every bit off eeway was explored to its fullest.
To Optimus Prime, this was a horrific abuse of the power that was entrusted in the Thirteen Primes, to govern and observe but never to oppress and destroy their society to this extent!
He opens his intake, but he cannot speak, even as he stares at this mech he once knew, once called friend.
His spark throbs.
Optimus turns once more to- to M- the one who calls himself Megatronus- a mech who bears the name of his murderer, his betrayer, his brother and says nothing. Surely everyone can see the devastation written all over his faceplates.
Alpha Trion makes a noise, clearly intending to speak, but Optimus silences him, overriding his vocal modulator with brutal efficiency. Heâs never had to do that before and something hurts.Â
Megatronus gives a quick rundown of everything that Alpha Trion left out. The hard, cold truth of the matter. Starvation, oppression, murder, the rich get richer and the poor die alone in the dark. The third class citizens are taken and put to work, denied to ability to speak, rights stripped and designations deleted, forgotten until all that was left was a mindless drone, whose sentient mind retreated deep inside.
Sparklings are taken from carriers who were forced from a higher rank of citizen and neither was ever seen again. Sparklings who were considered the property of their higher ranking parent until they reached an age old enough to take an aptitude test to determine what caste they were joining.
Second class and above never moved unless they offended someone on a higher level. The Primes remained Prime until they died or another was chosen.
Cybertron was built on the bodies of the abandoned, those who had no designation and barely counted as citizens, from third class servants, and janitors, to second class traders, scribes, artists, ect, to first class, the rich, privileged and blessed.
Then the Nobles, the elite, the shining jewels of Cybertron, right below the Primes, the rulers.
Optimus feels numb with horror.
He stares and stares and his optics burn even as Megatronusâs blaze. He turns, only last time, one more time to face Alpha Trion.Â
He allows him to speak in his defense- but- but.Â
âThis was for the greater good, Optimus, my friend, my lord, in order to keep the best and brightest alive, to ensure we would survive as the years passed and we faced a great many challenges. The survival, the endurance of our race, our species was entirely dependent on our ability to unsure what we had went to the most deserving!â
Alpha Trion looks so very sincere, he is entirely genuine in his ever present affection for his long lost friend, but Optimus can barely speak but for the pain in his spark.
âSurely you must see,â Alpha Trion beseeches, âWe did it for you, Optimus.â
Clearly expecting his confession to ensure Optimus is firmly on his side, Alpha Trion takes a single step forward, reaching out from the only true Prime left.
Something shatters in his spark chamber and Optimus rises up, slides back and pulls. The Star Saber materializes in his servos in a boom of light and noise, the voice that leaves his intake is terrifying as it thunders through the great hall and echoes throughout the entire city-
âFreedom is the right of all sentient beings!â
Itâs wretched out of him, this undeniable truth that seems to have been forgotten so long ago. There is betrayal on Alpha Trionâs face, heartbreak and disbelief.
He doesnât understand, he did this for you.
Optimus weeps even as he raises his sword.
Of course, this is being recorded and watched across the entire planet because the Iacon nobles and government were absolutely going to use Megatronus's failure and subsequent death as more incentive to keep your helms down, but that really backfired because okay, wow, real Prime- Original Thirteenth Prime who is supporting a Mech named for another one of the Original Thirteen. The Betrayer at that!Â
Clearly unexpected, but thatâs what you get when the nutjob shadow ruling your planet since almost the beginning of time lies.
I also imagine Optimus with glowing optics and sigils on his frame. Maybe communing with Primus and easily manipulating the AllSpark or something, ect, ect.....
Megatronus will not be understanding Optimus at all. Itâs like if the Devil came out of Hell and realized all his demons were running amok and starting crying and killing all of them while asking to borrow your couch because he lives in Hell, not Earth.
(and someone forgot to tell you he was pretty)

WolfWalkers AU (Part 1)
NOTE; This is a pretty dark AU, I am not going to lie. There are topics dealt with, such as realistic near-death experiences, poaching, and quite a bit of blood mentions. If these topics make you uncomfortable, I recommend you find an AU besides this one you find fancy :)) _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
Alright, it is the time, my friends. The Wolfwalkers film has officially has been put onto Apple TV, which means I can finally make more in-depth of this AU. Sadly, at the moment, I do not have access to my art tools, which means I will be focusing more on writing and expanding this AU rather than drawing out characters and backgrounds as I planned. But trust me when I say that type of stuff will come along soon.
The three keywords of this AU are Compassion, Bravery, and Freedom. All of these keywords, in some way, relate to the triplets. One thing this AU challenges toward the triplets other than keeping their secret on their new powers is what would happen when faced with something that they have a hard time understanding or performing. At the moment, I will not go into too much detail on which kid has which keyword associated with them, but I will touch upon it as I go more into detail story-wise in a second.
THE STORY (Part 1)Â
The whole mess of the kids gaining the Wolfwalking ability begins ultimately with Dellaâs storytelling. Near the beginning of it all, Della tells a story of this lost civilization called the âWolfWalkersâ who had some freak magic allowing them to speak to wolves. Â Some rumors even claim WolfWalkers become wolves in the dead of night, making them somewhat dangerous and wild people.
In some freak luck, it is stated from Scrooge that wolves are roaming the forest near the mansion. All the kids, aside from Dewey, grow concerned with the idea of wolves around the house, mainly after the whole WolfWalkers tale. Scrooge is instantaneous to reassure the kids that it is just ordinary wolves and makes sure to note how the civilization was meant to be lost and somewhat forgotten. Before any more questions can be thrown at him or Della, all the kids get sent to bed. Then a small convo between the triples ensue, we get to hear Louies worry about the wolves, but Deweyâs interest in them in the case they may be Wolfwalkers or Wolfwalkers among. When Dewey verbally mentions how he may just go outside from curiosity, Huey is real quick to shut him down and snaps at him to go to bed and stay in there, or else he will legit kill him. Dewey âagreesâ and acts as if he is asleep until he knows his brothers are out cold. Luckily for him, both of his brothers are pretty heavy sleepers (Louie the most), Â and he manages to dip out a window.
Dewey heads straight for the forest, claiming to himself adventure is calling for him. He trots around in the woods for a while, and to his dismay, he finds nothing. Dewey is about to give up and go home when the duckling hears something in the bushes. Dewey, not thinking correctly, nears the brush where he overheard the noise. Dewey sticks his hand in, and to his horror, something immediately locks its jaws onto his arm. Â He screams and pulls his arm out to find a large bite mark left there. A large, dog-like creature creeps out of the bushes and begins to near Dewey. Â It was a wolf. Â Dewey tries to stand his ground, but admittedly he is horrified. But the weird thing is that the wolf doesnât seem aggressive or angry; it just had a surprised look on its face. It nearly looked human with its surprised eyes and a somewhat dropped jaw. Â Â Â Â Â
The wolf drew closer to Dewey, who was too shocked to react appropriately. Though the wolf seems more interested in the bite mark it had left behind. Dewey, in an act of bravery, allows the wolf to inspect the fault. It lowers its head before licking the wound it left behind. Suddenly, yellow like mist surrounds the damage. It swirls around his arm, and out of the blue, the bite mark disappears. The wolf gives a relieved smile before giving Dewey a polite nod and bounding back into the brush it came from. Â Â Â
Dewey was baffled. But he as well suddenly felt different. He was still him- but the things around him just felt odd and yet so interesting. Dewey would have gone on to sit there bewildered and curious about this magic wolf, but he suddenly heard his name being called aggressively and somewhat worriedly. He turned around to see Della and Huey running towards him. Apparently, Huey had managed to catch Dewey running out, and when he couldnât find him, he decided to grab an adult for help. Dewey gets scolded by his mother and sent home for the night.
As Dewey falls asleep while getting scolded by Huey, he dreams of something- interesting. He is back in the forest, where a wolf is once again back. But it isnât the same wolf. It is taller and thinner, with a bit of a human look in its eyes. Though he has never seen the animal before, he feels as if he understands it. Its worries, its anger, and its general feelings. He reaches out to touch the wolf, but he is sucked out of his dream world by Beaklys voice calling him out to breakfast.
Dewey ensues on a very awkward breakfast. He knows he is still in trouble, but he cannot brush off that dream once more. Â After breakfast is over, Della warns Dewey to not enter the forest again, and if he does, Dewey will be confined to the house for a long while. Dewey wants to argue with her but decides against it, not wanting to further anger her nor risk slipping up about the wolf heâd meet in the forest. He didnât want to let her be correct about the wolves.
Out of story here. Iâd like to make a side note of how strong Deweyâs emotions and beliefs are to the story even if they come off as ignorant and selfish. Believe me when I say his actions will not only come back at him but just generally come full circle.
Throughout the day, Dewey proceeded to space out about the events of last night. The wolf, itâs healing and the dream. Dewey begins to debate if maybe the wolf could be one of those Wolfwalkers from his motherâs tale. He recalls it being rumored they can turn into wolves. But do they as well have healing abilities? But most importantly, why are there a pack of those âWolfwalkersâ near the mansion in the first place? Dewey attempts to ask Webby about them, curious if she has any books, yet all said books merely recall them being dangerous and wild people, nothing on a possible calm nature or their actual past.
That night, Dewey found himself stressed out and curious. He wants to know more, but he also knows any chance of him being sneaky is thrown out the window since he has worries Huey will wake and catch him again. So, Dewey decides he should wait a day or two to smooth out his plan. He goes to sleep, to only be thrown back into the same dream as last night. The wolf is back, and now he is growing inquisitive again. Out of curiosity, he reaches out his hand to acknowledge the creature. As Dewey makes this error, he wakes up, although he is quick to note something is wrong. His eyesight seems more potent but also seems to lack in seeing specific colors. He also has a stronger sense of smell. Confused, Dewey goes to face a window next to his bed.
Dewey must have let out such a loud screech because nearly EVERYONE in the house started screaming and make a ruckus as well. Dewey wasnât meet with himself, but rather the wolf that had kept appearing in his dreams. He now has a long grey body and large blue eyes. One loud shrill of fear broke from Louie, and Huey let out a yelp of fear at the sight of his brother. Dewey desperately tried to speak to them, but they couldnât understand him from the looks of it.
As Dewey withdrew into the open window, he located his body asleep, as if nothing was occurring around him. Dewey was starting to freak out, scarcely noticing Della running into the room trying to grab him in wolf form. Attempting to think fast, Dewey leaped out the open window and into the forest with his new body. He ran as fast he could, still not thinking and letting thoughts run through his mind. As he ran, he tripped into something enormous and fluffy. He tumbled downhill with it, howling and whining all the way down. As he and the creature came to holt, it was quick to react and pin him to the floor, teeth-baring as a horrible deep hiss rose from its throat. But the second it got a look at him, it stopped. It was the wolf from last night.
