MEMORIAL TO A MARRIAGE: This is a very skilled piece, and there are all these little details, like the blanket over the couple, and the way their feet touch.  And it's the artist and her (now) wife - made in a time when they couldn't marry.  As a lesbian I can acknowledge that marriage is not the 'end all, be all' of gay rights, but this makes me feel a lot of things and I could stare at it for hours. A FEW SMALL NIPS: Apparently Frida was inspired to paint this from a news headline about a man who stabbed his girlfriend several times. In court, he said, “I only gave her a few small nips!” I think Frida is trying to show how men belittle the damage they cause to women. Frida famously had an incredibly difficult relationship with her husband, Diego. So Frida decided to depict this in all its bloodiness. The title held by birds make it feel more darkly humorous. Also, this woman has short hair and Diego Rivera always liked her hair long. Her body is contorted, facing two directions. The blood spattering the frame creates an even more visceral scene. SHIN ULTRAMAN

Okay, it’s bad enough (though, given how things have been the last year, inevitable) that Toho has postponed the release of the Shin Ultraman film from early summer to nobody-knows-when.

But just a few days ago Bandai added insult to injury by announcing the new Dynaction Shin Ultraman action figure.

At first blush, this just looks like the regular SHFiguarts figure of Shin Ultraman.  I read a little more of the description and the Dynaction figure is supposed to have “die-cast and POM plastic joints for enhanced posablity.” 

It’s also supposed to have light-up eyes (batteries included).  But the real difference between the Dynaction figure and the SHFiguarts figure is size: the Dynaction figure is 40 cm/15.7 inches tall!

So far, so good, I thought.  This baby is going to be more than twice the size of the SHFiguarts version; bigger even than a 1/6-scale figure.  And still be super-poseable.  Win, win situation. right?

Then I saw the price, and I had to rub my eyes and splash cold water in my face numerous times to make sure I wasn’t seeing things.

The price is going to be 22,000 yen, or approximately $202.00 US with current exchange rates.

I don’t know about you, but that’s more than a little expensive for a figure that is twice the size of their regular figure, even with the inclusion of light-up eyes.

For comparison, these are the last four Ultraman figures (based on the anime versions) that I have purchased from Threezero.

Ultraman Ace

Like the Dynaction figure, all of these are extremely well articulated, are made of die-cast and plastic parts, and have light-up features.  Multiple light-up features, not just the eyes (as illustrated in the above photos).  The Ultraman figures also have light-up features on their forearms, which I did not take photos of.

The Ultraman and Ultraman ver. 7.2 (Ultraseven) are just shy of 13 inches tall.

MSRP for each one of these figures: $130.00 US each.

That’s a little more than half of what Bandai will be charging for the Dynaction Ultraman figure.

And for $200.00, I sure as heck do not want to see all of those exposed joints!

Why is the Dynaction figure so expensive in comparison?  I don’t know.  I’ve long had an issue with the price Bandai charges for many of their figures, especially their SHFiguarts Ultraman figures and SHMonsterarts figures.  These always seem to be more expensive than the SHFiguarts Kamen Rider and Super Sentai figures.

For further comparison, the SHFiguarts Shin Ultraman figure, which is due to be released later this summer, is priced at $58.00 US.  Most of the Kamen Rider and Super Sentai figures are in the $20-$30.00 US range.

I sometimes wonder if the reason the Ultraman figures always seem to be more expensive is because Bandai is the majority (49.5% the last time I checked) stockholder of Tsuburaya Productions, the folks who created and own Ultraman.  But I don’t feel like going down that rabbit hole right now.

And before some people chime in and say something about the cost of importing the toys from Japan, be aware that the price of these figures in Japan is exactly the same.

The Shin Ultraman Dynaction figure is currently scheduled to be released in the US in October, so if anyone is interested in it I would suggest you start saving your pennies.

As for me, it’s not a priority purchase.  If I see it offered at reasonable price on Mandarake I might pick it up sometime down the line, but I’m not going to hold my breath.

A small abstract piece which I started with an underpainting of coffee. It gives a nice warm tone. It still can be seen in the very light parts of the painting. I took a free-association approach to the work, that is, I let the work take me where it wanted to go. I used, as I said, coffee, acrylic colours on artist quality watercolour paper. The work in inches is 7.7 x 11.6, it is signed on the back. There is a 1 cm border around the painting. Mission accomplished!

So, it’s been 18 weeks since I embarked on my weight loss journey. When I started on June 8th, 2020, I was all of 159.8 lbs (72.5kg) with a body fat percentage of 34.3% (categorised as obese) and measured 100, 82, 102 cms (39.4, 32.3, 40.2 inches) around my bust, waist and butt. Today, I weight 142.8 lbs (64.8kg) and my body fat percentage has come down to 21.4% (just a little shy of hitting the ‘athletes’ category, yay!) and I measure 88, 68, 88 cms (34.6, 26.8, 34.6 inches around my bust, waist and butt.  Overall, I have lost 12.9% body fat; with a total fat loss of 10.9kg and muscle mass gain of 3.2kg. I’ve also lost a total of 40 cms (15.7 inches) from my bust, waist and butt. 

I honestly thought that I was going to be a little bit lighter when I hit my ideal body fat percentage -- my target weight at the beginning of my journey was 135 lbs -- but of course, this might not be relevant anymore as the last time I was 135 lbs, I was purely doing cardio plus some BJJ thrice a week max. 

I’ve probably put on more muscle weight now that I’ve incorporated some weightlifting into my workouts; and before we’re forced to go back into quarantine this week, I was easing into Crossfit four times a week.

Now that I’ve hit my body fat ideal, I guess losing more weight is optional. Of course, I could always lose some more in order to see a six pack. Then again, I know from experience that once my body fat dips lower than 20%, maintaining it will be a lot harder. 

The lowest I’ve been body fat-wise was around 17%, which is hardly low enough, but at that point, my period had become scanty and I came to a point where I woke up every morning feeling like I’d been hit by a truck the night before. I was also getting sick super easily, which meant that although I may have liked the way I looked at the time, my body certainly wasn’t working optimally. My immune system was suffering and eventually, so did training.

Know your body type What I’ve learnt to accept this time around is that you have to train and eat for the body you have and not for the body you want. If I had a choice on what I’d like my body to look like, it would be like Nicole Scherzinger’s or Shay Mitchell, or any celeb with an ectomorph body type. Growing up, I was super self-conscious about my thick Kadazan legs (it also doesn’t help that I’m short!). I thought losing weight would automatically make me look slender and lithe. It didn't. It simply made me look like a slimmer version of me. Today, older and wiser, and sick and tired of feeling uncomfortable in my own skin; I’ve learned that you can only make the best of the body you have. It’s the only body you’re gonna have for the rest of your life! Instead of looking at unrealistic role models, I have learned to look at bodies that are similar to mine to see when I could potentially go both physique and performance-wise.

In the past, the media had led the public to believe that the only way to be beautiful, fit and healthy is to be small and slim. Not true.You can be fit regardless of your body type.

Chrissy King, Kayla Itsines and Kaisa Keranen are all fitness trainers who have different body types. They prove that fitness comes in all shapes and sizes. You just have to work with the body you have. Whether you are a naturally softer and rounder endomorph like Chrissy, a slender and lithe ectomorph like Kayla, or a strong and amazon-like mesomorph like Kaisa, you can always work towards becoming your fittest self. 

That’s what I did and still continuing to do.
