I kind of struggle with like. Existing in my body sometimes so I try to do those affirmations that are like "my body is trying its best. My body cares about me and wants me to live etc." and they sometimes work if I'm having a day struggling with my self image but like. When it's about my skin or level of pain or how exhausted I may be it kind of feels like I'm clearly just lying to myself because I have an autoimmune disorder so my body actually is just attacking itself and so I feel terrible more times than not and I know that it's actually my body trying to protect me from something and wires are just getting crossed somewhere but it's kind of hard sometimes anyway and yeah idk I ate something I didn't realize was a migraine trigger until I got a migraine and I can't sleep now and am trying to not resent that I'm Like This I guess

not to shill for tumblr or be a mobile user on main but i do just wanna point out i think the response to the dashboard clown thing is a little disproportionate, all things considered
like if you just dont like the show thats fine but the way some of these posts are worded very weirdly and acting like its somehow way worse than.....literally any of the other ads? like yea tumblr is a company and not your friend, netflix is unethical and sucks. but like. are we pretending tumblr hasnt had ads for like. horrible fad diets and the fucking trump coin and god knows what else but like this really isnt worse than like. the fact that ppl with strobing triggers are constantly endangered by the ads on this site.
and maybe its super bad on desktop or something but so far this ad campaign has actually been one of the less obtrusive ones vs their other ads, imo. I dont think ive really seen them in between the posts on my dashboard? (hard to tell bc I try to automatically ignore those anyway) but like it feels like most of this ad campaign has been. a little fictional character at the top of the dashboard. and like. a separate dashboard "tab".....that i dont have to look at, and i dont. and its fine. i barely even noticed it. i probably wouldnt have thought twice about it if everyone hadnt started complaining about it. if tumblr wants to do more ads that are just dashboard tabs that I dont actually have to look at and arent interrupting my main dash i think im fine with that actually. like. obviously no advertisements are better than ads but like i dont have a particular problem with the structure or honestly even the content of this ad. its for a show that i might be intrigued to watch honestly. but its also not being targeted to me personally based on data harvesting its just blanket targeting to everyone.
again, id prefer no ads, but if we're going have them: i would actually prefer it be for things i might be interested in, but without the data harvesting to do it. if i HAVE to see ads, this is a way that i dont mind as much.
#toy txt post#sorry if you have a clown phobia ig. i hope one of the many posts with instructions on how to make the clown go away have been helpful for#you. i would like to point out that people can have phobias and triggers of Literally Anything so its not like there is anything that can be#advertised that is Fine For Everyone. i will admit clowns are a fairly common phobia but again i will point out the diet ads#and ask why we arent more incensed generally about the ubiquity of fatphobia in culture. and i will point out the unavoidable flashing ads#that have been a danger to ppl w strobing triggers. be that for migraines or epilepsy etc. both bad.#and i will point out. i dont THINK the clown has been strobing and i dont think the one piece ad campaign on tumblr dot com has been#particularly strobey? and i would just like to also say. its not even a scary clown. its not even like a horror ad. hes literally just like#a clown. its like walking past a spirit halloween. and tbh tis the season. sorry#idk. again. i think its fine to dislike the ads i think its fine to dislike clowns and one piece! but like#do you have to pretend its like The Virtuous Position of Righteous Outrage over an Ethical Transgression??? its literally fine#as far as my Problems With Tumblr Staff Go. Putting A Little Clown On The Dashboard As An Ad for a show is like#i dont. really give a shit. its fine. its cringe ig but what isnt. its fine to be cringe. its actually more cringe imo bc its an ad than the#the content itself being `cringey` bc u can cringe all day long at weeb nerd interests and for what? how dare genuine interest in media#i will say mixed bag of like. using ppls art within the ad campaign. not sure what the right thing to do there is tho#bc i think its honestly kind of a bad combo of tumblr trying to earnestly promote artists on the site#by reblogging and linking their work. but it is also. exploiting their art for advertisements without apparently asking or compensating them#WHICH. is still somehow a step above like hot topic and shit. bc tumblr is. i think? doing the bare minimum of linking to the artist? and#not presenting it as smth they made. perhaps in the future they could maintain the cool thing of trying to earnestly promote the work of#independent artists without it being as exploitative by like. asking permission to the artist to use their art and MAYBE even pay them#altho ig that can be tricky for things like this where its kind of fanart. but i do think they could work it out. like theyre clearly#already talking w netflix and shit so they could work a licensing deal w the artists or smth. but then that is also tricky rn specifically#bc of the strike. tumblr is a company that does not intend to join the unions. and generally i would probably prefer companies commission#independent artists in this way i think that would be cool. but in this situation specifically it would suck for the artist bc if they#approve it and get compensated for it instead of it just being fanart. now theyre Promoting A Struck Company Officially i think?#im not gonna pretend to know the details of what is and isnt allowed for influencers but if someone happens to like. be an artist who wants#to also get into sag aftra that might become a problem. idk! if nothing else. it definitely seems more complicated to navigate than tumblr#itself doing an ad campaign for netflix. which again. netflix sucks shit. but its not like Tumblr Ads(tm) are known for being only ethical#companies. i just saw like 5 ads for audible on my dash. you know. a company that i believe has had some shady shit w how it treats authors#and is owned by amazon.so like. idk. Advertising A Netflix Show is not high on my list of issues i have w staff or how theyre running things

Spencer Reid + Migraines
(Chronic pain as a metaphor for emotional baggage or emotional blocks in media)
TLDR; I hate it when media uses pain (especially irl chronic pain conditions) as a metaphor for emotional trauma and allows a character to be healed once they have gotten over their trauma.
So this is a rant I've had building up for a while now, especially because I've seen quite a few people on my dashboard talking about Maeve/the Maeve storyline, and how she was introduced to the show as Spencer's doctor who magically "cured" his headaches with vitamins? Apparently (I don't remember the details because I haven't seen those episodes in so long, but yikes).
I am a chronic pain sufferer and I have been formally diagnosed with chronic migraines. Because of a medication used to treat chronic migraines, I haven't had an attack in more than three years (save for one outlier).
Migraines are an intensely serious medical problem, and it's weird to me that Spencer was clearly having migraine attacks on the show and they didn't address it as it's own medical problem? They just acted like he was having some light headaches and needed to ignore it and get over the problem or "find the root cause" - aka stop being sad and then your brain will get better???
When I was originally watching the Season 6 episodes where Spencer starts struggling with his "headaches", I have never related to something more in my life. Especially because at that point in my life, I was still have 2 or 3 migraine attacks per month, and seeing him wearing sunglasses indoors, aggressively bouncing his leg to try and distract from the pain while sitting in a hospital waiting room, rubbing his eye sockets, flinching at the light - that was and sometimes still is my life.
When the doctors determined that he didn't have epilepsy, didn't have a tumor, etc. I was like "okay, so they're gonna treat him for migraines and acknowledge that migraines are a really detrimental chronic pain condition."
But no. They just have him the whole "idk. You're not dying so the pain must be cause you're like... sad."
And I totally understand Spencer not wanting to take medication because of his past with Dualdid, but there are so many non-narcotic options for pain treatment. Especially because his character is very into science, it would have been interesting to see him exploring alternative (very traditional) medicine like acupuncture or massage, while acknowledging his past drug addiction as a problem and saying that he doesn't want to relapse.
Hell, it would have even been nice for them to acknowledge that his caffeine addiction could have been affecting his headaches and for there to be a little subplot where he was super irritable because his doctor asked him to quit coffee to see if it made his headaches go away. (Because one of the first migraine treatments is quitting caffeine, chocolate, or alcohol - common trigger foods.)
But instead, the show presented his headaches as a physical presentation of his emotional pain. Which is something incredibly common for shows to do - the other example I can think of is Weeds. But in general I fucking hate the idea that chronic pain is just an embodiment of emotional trauma, and once you get over that emotional trauma, you are "cured". (Because it was narratively implied in the show that part of the reason Maeve was able to cure his headaches is because he was in love with her, not because of the weird pills she gave him.)
For once, I would like to see a show acknowledge chronic pain as a problem that is 100% out of the control of a person, and even though it's not life threatening, it still fucking sucks. And while it might be treatable, it is incurable. Like HELLO
Don't treat it like some emotional arc that the person has to get over and not a problem that people have to realistically battle for their whole lives. I HATE the metaphor that pain is just a manifestation of negative emotions and it will go away once you acknowledge your trauma or battle those negative emotions.
I so badly wanted them to acknowledge Spencer as a chronic migraine patient and treat him as such.
But anyway. That's it

I'm starting to get a little more desperate about the migraines. Yesterday I called the endo clinic and they will change my birth control ASAP when I get home. Which made me feel SO relieved and happy.
But then later I had another short burst of migraine and that made me cry for like 30 minutes straight. I'm just so done with it. It sucks. I think the trigger was motion sickness from public transport. Today we will travel to the mountains 🥳, but that also means a lot of public transport and I really really hope it'll be OK. I read a bit about it online and apparently people with migraines are more prone to motion sickness (I know I definitely am) and it is a common trigger.
The weather seems to be quite nice, though! And I managed to keep the weight of my backpack around 7 kg (4.5 kg without water and food). My friend was super impressed by that (he has like 11 kg).
We're hiking pretty much the shortest distances possible (4 - 6 hours a day) and I'm happy about that, too. No need to push big limits here. Just need to be up there and enjoy the nature and fresh air.
We didn't really talk about the conflict from yesterday, but I'm pretty sure the friend and partner did talk about it, because they were MUCH more relaxed after I got back. I was really glad about that as well.

Skin is allergic to everything gang! I broke out in hives last week and the eczema as a result is Not The Best (on top of that I already had eczema 🙃🙃. On top of that I have scalp issues too bc apparently I find a new thing my skin is allergic to every damn week 😂😂 So glad I'm not alone in this lmao
I hate that for you. :( But you're not alone! I'm right there with you. I am allergic to so much, and the stupidest things. I am allergic to TOOTHPASTE. (I have to order a special toothpaste from Italy with none of the common allergens. It costs $11 a tube and tastes like flowers.) I am allergic to MY OWN TATTOOS THAT ARE ALREADY ON MY BODY.
Tumblr media
I'm not as bad as my mom, who is allergic to such things as rubbing alcohol and bandaid adhesive, but since I'm getting more sensitive as I age, that could be in my future. This year, they've discontinued my moisturizer and my deoderant (which took forever to find in the first place, of course), and I've been going through the horrible ordeal of trying to find new ones that both work and do not trigger an allergic reaction. It's not going great.
I also have allergic reactions to my chronic migraines, which cause these lovely heat rashes on my face, neck, and chest.

Wack migraine facts please? @starlight-identity-hoard
yells in delight /silly /pos
postdrome, the final phase of a migraine, is also referred to as migraine hangover ( or migraine high if you're me ^^ ). it involves feeling tired, drained, hungover, confused, depressed, and having difficulty concentrating, BUT it can also leave one feeling euphoric which is what happens 2 me
migraine aura ( second stage of a migraine that is really rare apparently ) is when one's senses change, such as speech and movement speed. visual effects are most common, and i usually see what i call 'bubbles', 'static rain', 'visualized binaural beats' and 'flickering lights'
migraines can be triggered by anything so u could just be chilling and then boom. agony /lh
there are multiple kinds of migraines and the one i feel is the wackiest is what i call 'half and half pain', where one entire half of my body will hurt for like 5 minutes and then i'm fine again dfghj

From Hot Flashes to Mood Swings: 34 Symptoms of Menopause Explained
Tumblr media
Menopause is a natural phase in a woman's life that marks the end of her reproductive years. However, this transition can bring a variety of physical, mental, and emotional changes that vary in intensity from person to person. Understanding the symptoms of menopause can help you navigate this life stage with more ease and confidence. Here, we break down 34 symptoms of menopause to help you identify and manage them.
1. Hot Flashes Hot flashes are one of the most recognized symptoms of menopause. You may experience sudden waves of heat, often accompanied by sweating, that can last for a few seconds to several minutes.
2. Night Sweats Similar to hot flashes, night sweats occur while you're sleeping, causing you to wake up drenched in sweat. This can disturb your sleep and leave you feeling exhausted during the day.
3. Irregular Periods As your body transitions into menopause, your periods may become irregular. They could be lighter, heavier, or more sporadic, with longer or shorter cycles.
4. Vaginal Dryness Decreased estrogen levels can lead to thinning and dryness of the vaginal walls, which can cause discomfort, especially during intercourse.
5. Mood Swings Fluctuating hormone levels may result in mood swings, making you feel irritable, anxious, or even sad for no apparent reason.
6. Fatigue It's common to experience fatigue during menopause. The hormonal shifts can sap your energy, making it harder to get through the day without feeling drained.
7. Sleep Disturbances Sleep issues, such as insomnia or frequent waking, are common during menopause, often related to night sweats and anxiety.
8. Weight Gain As your metabolism slows down, you may notice an increase in body fat, especially around the abdomen. This is a common symptom of menopause and can be managed with lifestyle changes.
9. Thinning Hair Hormonal changes during menopause can lead to hair thinning or even hair loss, especially around the crown of the head.
10. Memory Lapses Some women experience "brain fog" or memory lapses during menopause. You may find it harder to concentrate or recall information.

16. Dry Skin Lower estrogen levels can cause your skin to become drier, less elastic, and more prone to wrinkles.
17. Breast Tenderness Fluctuations in estrogen can lead to tenderness or swelling in the breasts, similar to what you may have experienced during your menstrual cycle.
18. Loss of Libido A decrease in sex drive is a common symptom of menopause due to hormonal changes and vaginal discomfort.
19. Urinary Incontinence Menopause can weaken the pelvic floor muscles, which may lead to stress incontinence, especially when laughing, coughing, or exercising.
20. Frequent Urination Along with urinary incontinence, some women experience an increased urge to urinate more frequently, even without drinking more liquids.
21. Anxiety Menopause can heighten anxiety levels, sometimes causing feelings of unease or panic.
22. Depression For some women, menopause can trigger depression or worsen existing mental health conditions due to hormonal imbalances.
23. Irritability It’s common to feel more easily irritated during menopause, as hormonal changes affect emotional regulation.
24. Osteoporosis Risk The decline in estrogen increases the risk of osteoporosis, where bones become fragile and more prone to fractures.
25. Muscle Aches Menopause can bring about unexplained muscle aches and soreness, which may affect your mobility and energy levels.
26. Burning Mouth Syndrome Some women experience a burning sensation in their mouth or on their tongue, which may be linked to menopause.
27. Gum Problems Hormonal changes can also lead to dry mouth and gum issues, such as inflammation or bleeding.
28. Body Odor Changes Hormonal fluctuations can alter your body odor, making you more sensitive to certain smells or causing stronger body odor.
29. Cold Flashes While hot flashes are common, some women also experience cold flashes, feeling suddenly chilled.
30. Tingling Sensations You may experience tingling sensations, particularly in your hands, feet, or limbs, due to nerve changes during menopause.
31. Changes in Taste Menopause may alter your sense of taste, making certain foods taste different or less appealing.
32. Lack of Motivation You might notice a drop in motivation or interest in activities you once enjoyed, which could be linked to hormonal changes.
33. Allergies Menopause can sometimes trigger new allergies or worsen existing ones due to changes in the immune system.
34. Changes in Menstrual Cycle Symptoms You might experience symptoms similar to PMS during menopause, such as cramping, bloating, or mood swings, even without a regular period.
Embracing the Menopause Journey
While menopause can bring a variety of symptoms, it’s important to remember that it’s a natural stage of life. Recognizing these symptoms and understanding how they affect you can empower you to take control of your health and well-being during this transition. Speak with your healthcare provider about managing your symptoms and explore natural or medical remedies that may be right for you.

The Hidden Dangers: Why Mold Testing is Essential for Your Health
Unseen, silent, and potentially hazardous - mold can infiltrate our homes without us even realizing it. While we may think of mold as just a nuisance that causes unsightly stains or an unpleasant odor, the truth is that it poses serious risks to our health. Mold exposure can trigger a range of symptoms and respiratory issues, making it essential to take proactive measures for your well-being. In this blog post, we dive into the hidden dangers of mold and why testing for its presence is crucial in safeguarding your health. So grab a cup of tea, settle in, and let's uncover the mysteries lurking behind those walls!
Understanding Mold: What is it and how does it affect our health?
Mold is a type of fungi that thrives in damp environments, such as bathrooms, basements, and areas with water damage. It reproduces by releasing spores into the air, which can easily be inhaled. These tiny particles can trigger allergic reactions and respiratory issues in individuals who are sensitive to mold.
When mold spores are inhaled or come into contact with our skin, they can cause a wide range of health problems. Common symptoms include sneezing, coughing, itchy eyes or throat, nasal congestion, and skin rashes. For those with pre-existing respiratory conditions like asthma or allergies, mold exposure can exacerbate their symptoms.
Beyond these immediate effects on our respiratory system, prolonged mold exposure has been linked to more serious health concerns. Some studies suggest that exposure to certain types of molds may contribute to the development of respiratory infections and even neurological issues.
It's important to note that not everyone reacts the same way to mold exposure. Some individuals may experience severe symptoms while others may only have mild discomfort. However, regardless of the severity of your reaction, it's crucial to address any potential mold problems promptly for your overall health and well-being.
By understanding what mold is and how it affects our health, we can take steps toward creating a clean and safe living environment for ourselves and our loved ones. In the next sections of this blog post, we will explore why testing for mold is essential to protect against its hidden dangers
Common Symptoms of Mold Exposure
Mold exposure can have various effects on our health, and it's important to be aware of the common symptoms that may indicate mold exposure. While different individuals may react differently, certain signs are often associated with mold exposure.
One of the most common symptoms is respiratory issues. If you find yourself frequently coughing or experiencing wheezing, shortness of breath, or a tight chest, it could be due to mold in your environment.
Another sign to watch out for is allergic reactions. Mold spores can trigger allergies in some people, leading to symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, and itching.
Headaches and migraines are also commonly reported by those exposed to mold. If you notice an increase in headaches when spending time in a particular area or building, it could be a result of hidden mold growth.
Fatigue and difficulty concentrating are other indicators of possible mold exposure. If you constantly feel tired or struggle with brain fog without any apparent reason, it might be worth investigating if there's mold present in your surroundings.
Skin irritation is another symptom that shouldn't be ignored. Rashes or itching skin could point towards an allergic reaction triggered by molds present in your home or workplace.
It's crucial to remember that these symptoms may not always directly indicate the presence of molds but should serve as red flags for further investigation. If you notice any persistent health issues that seem linked to your environment but aren't sure about the cause - consider getting professional help for proper testing and identification.
The Importance of Mold Testing for Your Health
Mold testing may not be at the top of your to-do list, but it should be a priority when it comes to protecting your health. The presence of mold in your home can have serious consequences on both your physical and mental well-being.
One of the main reasons why mold testing is so important for your health is that mold exposure can trigger a range of respiratory issues. Symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath are common among individuals who have been exposed to mold spores. Prolonged exposure can even lead to more serious conditions like asthma or bronchitis.
Not only does mold affect our respiratory system, but it can also cause allergic reactions. If you find yourself sneezing excessively or experiencing itchiness and redness in your eyes whenever you're at home, there's a high chance that there could be hidden mold lurking somewhere within your walls or ceilings.
Furthermore, certain types of molds produce mycotoxins which can have detrimental effects on our overall health. These toxins are released into the air we breathe and can lead to symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, memory problems, and even depression.
By conducting regular mold testing in your home, you'll gain valuable insights into whether or not there are any underlying issues about mold growth. This will enable you to take proactive measures to prevent further contamination and safeguard the health of yourself and those around you.
While DIY test kits are available for purchase online or at hardware stores, it's worth noting that professional mold testing services offer greater accuracy and reliability. Certified professionals have specialized equipment that allows them to detect even the smallest traces of mold that may go unnoticed by untrained eyes.
In conclusion (since this section requires a conclusive tone), don't underestimate the importance of mold testing for safeguarding your health. By being aware of potential risks posed by unseen molds in our living spaces through accurate tests conducted by professionals, we can take the necessary steps to ensure a healthy and mold-free environment.
Types of Mold Tests Available
When it comes to testing for mold in your home, there are several options available. Each type of test serves a different purpose and can provide valuable information about the presence and severity of mold growth.
One common type of mold test is an air sample test. This involves collecting air samples from various areas in your home and sending them to a laboratory for analysis. The lab will determine the types and concentrations of mold spores present in the air, which can help identify potential health risks.
Another option is surface sampling, where swabs or tape lifts are used to collect samples from visible mold growth or suspected contaminated surfaces. These samples are then examined under a microscope to identify the specific types of molds present.
In some cases, bulk sampling may be necessary. This involves taking physical samples of materials such as drywall or carpet that show signs of mold growth. These samples are sent to a lab for analysis to confirm the presence and extent of contamination.
There are DIY testing kits available that allow homeowners to collect their samples without professional assistance. While these kits can provide some initial insight into potential mold issues, they may not be as accurate or comprehensive as tests conducted by professionals.
Choosing the right type of mold test depends on your specific situation and needs. If you suspect you have a significant mold problem or if you're experiencing severe symptoms related to exposure, it's best to consult with a professional who can recommend the most appropriate course of action.
Remember, detecting and addressing mold issues early is essential for protecting your health and preventing further damage to your home. So don't hesitate – take action if you suspect there may be hidden dangers lurking in your living spaces!
How to Identify and Prevent Mold Growth in Your Home
One of the most important steps in protecting your health from the hidden dangers of mold is being able to identify and prevent its growth in your home. Here are some tips on how you can do just that.
First, it's essential to be aware of the common areas where mold tends to thrive. These include damp basements, bathrooms with poor ventilation, and areas that have experienced water damage or leaks. Regularly inspect these spaces for any signs of moisture or discoloration on walls, ceilings, or floors.
If you do spot any suspicious spots or patches, don't ignore them! Take immediate action to address the issue before it worsens. This could involve fixing leaks, improving ventilation, or using dehumidifiers in problem areas.
In addition to visually identifying potential mold growth sites around your home, pay attention to any musty odors that persist even after cleaning and airing out a room. This could indicate an underlying mold problem that needs further investigation.
To prevent future mold growth, make sure your home has proper air circulation and humidity control systems in place. Keep rooms well-ventilated by opening windows when possible and using exhaust fans during activities like cooking or showering. Clean up spills promptly and address any plumbing issues as soon as they arise.
Regular cleaning routines are also crucial in preventing molds from taking hold in your living environment. Make sure to regularly dust surfaces and vacuum carpets to keep them free from dust particles that can contribute to mold growth.
Remember: prevention is key when it comes to dealing with molds! By staying vigilant about identifying potential trouble spots and implementing preventative measures such as controlling moisture levels within your home - you'll be taking proactive steps towards safeguarding both yourself and loved ones against harmful health risks associated with exposure.
Professional vs DIY Mold Testing: Which is the Better Option?
When it comes to mold testing, you have two options: hiring a professional or doing it yourself. Both options have their pros and cons, so let's take a closer look at each.
Professional mold testing can provide peace of mind knowing that experienced experts are handling the process. These professionals have specialized equipment and knowledge to accurately assess the extent of mold growth in your home. They can also identify any underlying causes or sources of moisture that may be contributing to the problem. Additionally, they can provide recommendations for remediation if necessary.
On the other hand, DIY mold testing kits are readily available and can be a more cost-effective option. These kits typically include swabs or air sampling devices that allow you to collect samples from suspected areas in your home. You then send these samples to a laboratory for analysis. DIY kits may not offer the same level of expertise as professional services but can still give you an indication of whether there is mold present in your home.
It's important to note that while DIY tests may be convenient and affordable, they do come with limitations. The accuracy of results depends on proper sample collection techniques and interpretation by non-experts. If not done correctly, false negatives or positives could occur, leading to incorrect conclusions about the presence or absence of mold.
Deciding between professional vs DIY mold testing depends on various factors such as budget constraints, urgency for results, and personal comfort with tackling the task yourself.
Remember that regardless of which option you choose, addressing any identified issues promptly is crucial for protecting your health and preventing further damage to your home!
Conclusion:
Now that you understand the hidden dangers of mold and how it can affect your health, it's essential to take action. Mold testing is a crucial step in identifying and addressing any potential mold issues in your home https://www.simonairquality.com/services/mold-testing/.
Whether you're experiencing symptoms of mold exposure or simply want peace of mind, getting professional mold testing is the best way to ensure accurate results. Professionals have the knowledge, experience, and specialized equipment necessary to detect even hidden sources of mold growth.
However, if you prefer a more cost-effective option, DIY mold testing kits are available. These kits can provide some insight into whether there is a presence of mold in your home but may not be as comprehensive as professional testing.
In addition to regular mold testing, there are steps you can take to identify and prevent mold growth in your home. Keep an eye out for any signs of water damage or moisture buildup. Ensure proper ventilation and humidity control throughout your living spaces. Repair leaks promptly and address any areas prone to dampness.
Remember that prevention is key when it comes to protecting yourself from the negative effects of mold exposure. By maintaining a clean and dry environment in your home, you significantly reduce the risk of harmful molds taking hold.
In conclusion (without using "in conclusion"), don't wait until symptoms arise before taking action against potential indoor molds. Be proactive about safeguarding your health by conducting routine mold tests or seeking professional help if needed. With diligence and proper maintenance, you can create a healthier living environment for yourself and your loved ones - free from the hidden dangers posed by molds!

Eyes and Headaches Connection: Understanding the Link Between Ocular Pain and Migraines
Tumblr media
In our modern digital age, where screens dominate our daily lives, it's no surprise that the eyes often bear the brunt of our technological advancements. What might surprise you, however, is the profound impact that eye health can have on your overall well-being, particularly when it comes to headaches. This comprehensive article delves deep into the intricate connection between eyes and headaches, shedding light on ocular pain, visual discomfort, eyestrain-induced headaches, and various related phenomena. Through this exploration, we aim to provide you with a clear understanding of the relationship and offer insights on how to find relief through effective eye care practices.
Eyes and Headaches Connection
Living in an era of constant screen exposure has led to an undeniable connection between eye health and headaches. The strain placed on our eyes by prolonged device usage can lead to a cascade of discomfort that often manifests as headaches. The Eyes and Headaches connection underscores the need for better awareness of our eye health, which is crucial for preventing and managing headaches.
Ocular Pain and Headaches
Ocular pain, often experienced as aching or discomfort around the eyes, can be closely intertwined with headaches. This pain can range from mild to severe and is commonly associated with tension-type headaches. The Eyes and Headaches connection becomes apparent when individuals find that addressing their ocular pain can lead to a reduction in headache frequency and intensity.
Visual Discomfort and Migraines
Visual discomfort, including sensitivity to light and blurred vision, is a hallmark of migraines. This discomfort often exacerbates the pain and can be a triggering factor for migraines. The Eyes and Headaches connection is evident in the way that addressing visual discomfort through proper lighting and visual breaks can help prevent migraines.
Eyestrain Causing Headaches
Eyestrain, a consequence of prolonged visual tasks, is a major player in the Eyes and Headaches connection. When we strain our eyes, the tension can radiate to the surrounding muscles, including those responsible for headache pain. Recognizing the relationship between eyestrain and headaches is pivotal in adopting strategies to alleviate both.
Headache Triggers: Eye Strain
Eye strain is a well-established trigger for headaches, often referred to as tension headaches. The connection between Eyes and Headaches is seen in the way that overworked eye muscles can lead to tension in the head and neck, ultimately resulting in throbbing headaches.
Vision Problems and Headaches
Undiagnosed or uncorrected vision problems can significantly contribute to the Eyes and Headaches connection. Squinting and straining due to poor vision can lead to eyestrain and trigger tension-type headaches. Regular eye examinations are essential for preventing such issues.
Eye-Related Tension Headaches
Tension headaches, characterized by a band-like pressure around the head, can have their roots in eye-related strain. When the muscles around the eyes are fatigued, the resulting tension can radiate to the head, causing discomfort. Recognizing this connection can lead to better management of these headaches.
Migraine with Visual Symptoms
Migraines often come with a range of visual symptoms, known as auras. These can include flashing lights, zigzag lines, and blind spots. The Eyes and Headaches connection is evident as visual disturbances are intricately linked to the onset of migraines.
Eye Fatigue and Headaches
Eye fatigue, a common consequence of prolonged screen time, can have a profound impact on headache occurrence. The Eyes and Headaches connection is clear when we consider how tired eyes can contribute to tension and discomfort that translate into headache pain.
Optic Discomfort and Migraines
Optic discomfort, such as pain behind the eyes, can be a significant indicator of an impending migraine. This discomfort, often interconnected with visual disturbances, highlights the close relationship between Eyes and Headaches.
Eye Strain-Induced Headaches
The strain placed on the eyes due to extended screen use can lead to eye strain-induced headaches. The Eyes and Headaches connection becomes evident when we realize that managing screen time and practicing regular eye exercises can help alleviate both eye strain and resulting headaches.
Headache Behind the Eyes
Headaches that manifest as pain behind the eyes are not uncommon. This sensation can be linked to various eye-related factors, including strain, fatigue, and tension. Understanding the Eyes and Headaches connection can guide us toward effective strategies for relief.
Visual Stress and Headaches
Visual stress, often caused by prolonged reading or staring at screens, can contribute to the development of headaches. The Eyes and Headaches connection becomes apparent when we recognize the impact of visual stress on overall eye health and its subsequent influence on headache frequency.
Headaches from Eye Problems
Certain eye conditions, such as dry eyes and uncorrected refractive errors, can lead to headaches. The Eyes and Headaches connection underscores the importance of regular eye check-ups in preventing and managing headaches.
Ophthalmic Origins of Headaches
Headaches originating from ophthalmic issues emphasize the close connection between the eyes and headache occurrence. Conditions such as glaucoma and uveitis can cause eye-related pain that translates into headaches, highlighting the Eyes and Headaches connection.
Eye Strain and Cephalalgia
Cephalalgia, a medical term for headache, often has its roots in eye strain. The Eyes and Headaches connection is illuminated when we understand that addressing eye strain through proper habits and eye care can have a positive impact on headache frequency and severity.
Periorbital Pain and Migraines
Periorbital pain, experienced around the eye sockets, can be a precursor to migraines. This discomfort is a testament to the interconnectedness of the eyes and headaches, where changes in eye sensations can serve as warning signs of impending migraines.
Eye Health and Headache Correlation
Maintaining good eye health goes hand in hand with preventing headaches. The Eyes and Headaches connection is evident as we acknowledge that practices like regular eye exercises, proper lighting, and screen breaks can contribute to both clear vision and reduced headache occurrences.
Headache Relief Through Eye Care
Effective eye care practices can offer significant relief from headaches. The Eyes and Headaches connection becomes actionable when we incorporate strategies like the 20-20-20 rule (taking a 20-second break every 20 minutes to look at something 20 feet away) to alleviate eye strain and related headaches.
Photophobia and Headache Connection
Photophobia, or sensitivity to light, is a common symptom of migraines and other headaches. The Eyes and Headaches connection is evident as we recognize that managing light exposure and wearing proper eyewear can mitigate photophobia and its associated headaches.
Neurological Links Between Eyes and Headaches
The intricate web of neurological connections between the eyes and the brain underscores the Eyes and Headaches connection. Changes in visual processing, nerve signaling, and blood flow can all contribute to headache onset and severity.
Headache Due to Visual Disturbances
Visual disturbances, such as seeing flashing lights or halos, can be harbingers of headaches. Understanding the Eyes and Headaches connection enables us to recognize these warning signs and take proactive steps to manage headache occurrences.
Eyeball Pressure and Migraines
A sensation of pressure within the eyeballs can accompany migraines. This pressure can be attributed to changes in blood flow and nerve activity. The Eyes and Headaches connection becomes apparent as we delve into the physiological processes that link these sensations.
Ocular Tension and Headaches
Tense eye muscles, often a result of prolonged screen time or squinting, can contribute to ocular tension headaches. The Eyes and Headaches connection highlights the importance of relaxation techniques, visual breaks, and proper ergonomics.
Migraine Aura Affecting Vision
Migraine auras, encompassing visual symptoms like flickering lights and visual distortions, can significantly impact vision. The Eyes and Headaches connection emphasizes the need for early recognition and management of these auras to prevent debilitating migraines.

What are Non-Epileptic Seizures, and how do they relate to trauma survivors?
Different types of epileptic seizures are listed here, as well as what to do if someone around you is having a seizure.
What is the difference between an Epileptic Seizure and a Non-Epileptic Seizure?
Epileptic seizures have measurable/apparent electric changes in the brain (electroencephalographic (EEG) changes). Non-Epileptic Seizures do not - they are due to psychological difficulties.
Both Epileptic Seizures and Non-Epileptic Seizures can have the same symptoms and triggers, however they affect the body differently, and are caused by different things.
Non-Epileptic Seizures can also be triggered by things which would not necessarily trigger an Epileptic Seizure.
"Dissociative seizures are similar to epileptic seizures in that they cause episodes of involuntary movements and behaviors. However, while epileptic seizures result from abnormal electrical signals in the brain, dissociative seizures happen for psychological reasons." - Medical News Today
There is also a difference in treatment between the two. Treatment for Epileptic Seizures can include medication, brain surgery, surgery to implant an electrical device.
Treatment for Non-Epileptic Seizures can include psychotherapy (such as cognitive behavioural therapy), and/or medication.
In both types, patients and their families/caregivers will also be taught how to manage their seizures.
"Treatment depends on the cause of the psychologic distress, and may involve cognitive behavioral therapy or psychotherapy, as well as antidepressive medication." - National Institutes of Health (NIH) (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services)     Last updated: 5/30/2016
How do you know which is which?
"PNES can look very similar to epileptic seizures. However, PNES does not cause electrical signals in the brain to misfire. This difference is one of the main ways in which doctors tell the two types apart.
For the same reason, these seizures cannot damage the brain. A person only requires emergency treatment for a dissociative seizure if they become injured." - Medical News Today
What else could resemble an Epileptic Seizure?
Epilepsy Action Australia has an article about this, here.
Their list involves: - Non-Epileptic Seizures. - Fainting accompanied by convulsive syncope (muscle jerks, twitching, or convulsing movements). - Migraine with fainting/loss of consciousness. - Migraine where visual or sensory changes may be mistaken for focal seizures. - Transient Ischaemic Attacks (TIA's). - Sleep Disorders. - Drop Attacks. - Dizzy Spells. - Movement Disorders. - Daydreaming (can be confused with absence seizures). - Cardiac Events. - Concussion. - Breath Holding Attacks (common in children). - Febrile Convulsions (a seizure which affects babies/children who have fevers).
***This source lists Non-Epileptic Seizures as "not a seizure", as it is an epilepsy resource and is aimed at differentiating epileptic seizures from all other symptoms/disorders/conditions.***
What are Non-Epileptic Seizures?
"NES" (Non-Epileptic Seizures), or "PNES" (Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Seizures), are seizures which are not caused by epilepsy - although they can appear identical to epileptic seizures.
They can have either physical or psychological causes, and people who experience Non-Epileptic Seizures often have a history of trauma.
"Seizures that are not due to epilepsy are sometimes called 'non-epileptic seizures'. They can have a physical cause such as low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia) or may be related to how the heart is working. Or they may have a psychological cause. The most common type of non-epileptic seizures (NES) is dissociative seizures" - Epilepsy Society.org.uk
"Dissociative or psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES) are involuntary episodes of movement, sensation, or behaviors (vocalizations, crying, and other expressions of emotion) that do not result from abnormal brain discharges. The seizures can look like any kind of epileptic seizure.  They are somatic manifestations (physical symptoms) of psychologic distress." Last updated: 5/30/2016 - National Institutes of Health (NIH) (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services)     Last updated: 5/30/2016
"Dissociative seizures happen unconsciously, which means that the person has no control over them and they are not put on." - Epilepsy Society.org.uk
What causes Non-Epileptic Seizures?
People who experience Non-Epileptic Seizures frequently have histories of trauma, as well as experiencing other conditions including: - Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) - Dissociative Disorders - Personality Disorders - Somatic Symptom Disorder / Somatoform Disorder - Depression - Anxiety Disorders (including Panic Disorder) - Conversion Disorder (Sources: Medical News Today, National Institutes of Health (NIH) (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services), International League Against Epilepsy.)
"Dissociative seizures are a type of nonepileptic seizure resulting from psychological distress. They cause episodes of involuntary movements or behaviors." - Medical News Today
"At their core, these seizures signal a body overwhelmed by stress and, often, previous trauma." - International League Against Epilepsy
"A history of physical or sexual abuse is one of the risk factors for PNES, which may partially explain why most people who experience them are women. Women are more likely than men to experience these types of abuse, particularly during childhood and in intimate relationships." - Medical News Today
"Myers estimates that about 90% of people with PNES have a history of trauma, though some can’t remember it or aren’t comfortable talking about it. The remaining 10% may not have experienced trauma, but they have difficulties handling stress." - International League Against Epilepsy
"A few small fMRI and scalp EEG studies suggest that the brains of people with PNES have reduced connectivity in certain areas, including those responsible for emotion processing, executive control and movement." - International League Against Epilepsy
What can trigger Non-Epileptic Seizures?
"Some NES are caused by mental or emotional processes, rather than by a physical cause. This type of seizure may happen when someone's reaction to painful or difficult thoughts and feelings affect them physically. These are called dissociative seizures." - Epilepsy Society.org.uk
"Besides a conscious or unconscious reminder of past trauma, PNES can be triggered by a stressful event, undergoing surgery, recovery from general anesthesia, hyperventilation or physical trauma. Many people say they can feel a seizure coming on; one study found that experiencing at least 5 panic symptoms before a seizure predicted PNES (rather than epilepsy) 83% of the time." - International League Against Epilepsy
Other terms for Non-Epileptic Seizures:
- Non-Epileptic Seizures (NES).
- Psychogenic Seizures, Psychogenic Non-Epileptic Seizures (PNES).
- Non-Epileptic Attacks, 'Non-Epileptic Attack Disorder' (NEAD).
- Functional Seizures.
- Dissociative Seizures.
"Dissociative seizures used to be called 'pseudoseizures’. This name is unhelpful because it suggests that the person is not having 'real' seizures or their seizures are deliberately 'put on'." - Epilepsy Society.org.uk
"In the past dissociative seizures were also often called “pseudoseizures”. This term is now discouraged because it wrongly implies that these seizures are consciously produced to look like epileptic seizures." - Epilepsy .org.uk
Is it possible to have both epilepsy and PNES?
“Yes, it is possible for the two types of seizures to coexist. An older 2013 review states that about 10% of people with PNES also have epilepsy. This co-occurrence can make diagnosing PNES more challenging." - Medical News Today

Hey! Sicktember ask . . . 4 Headache/Migraine. I kinda want to give brains a migraine! But if you'd rather do one of the boys, judging by my main migraine triggers being stress and lack of sleep, I would throw this one in Scott's direction!
Out Of Action
Fandom: Thunderbirds Rating: Gen Genre: Friendship/Hurt/Comfort Characters: Scott, MAX, Brains
Brains wasn't in the lab... or the hangars... or even the den. Nor was MAX. Where were they? @sicktember prompt 4: Headache/Migraine
Oh, you tempted me with Scott. You really did. But I barely ever write Brains so that felt like a fun challenge to play with - and it was, once I found an angle of attack to use!
Sicktember 2021 Prompts - Somehow we’re most of the way through the month and I still have one or two in my inbox. I’ve added a list of what’s been done already and what’s sitting as a not-yet written request to the original prompt post if anyone wants to pick any of the remaining prompts, and yes, the alt. prompts are also fair game!
Brains hadn’t been seen for several hours. That in itself wasn’t particularly unusual – Scott had gone actual days without seeing the man when he really got going in the lab and refused to surface for anything. That was MAX or Virgil’s domain at that point; Scott didn’t understand the jargon Brains spouted, and never seemed to be able to get him to take a break.
Even the fact that he was supposed to be in Thunderbird One’s hangar to discuss upgrades to her engines with him didn’t necessarily mean anything. Brains lived outside of the timestream more than he did in it, and couldn’t be counted on to remember mundane things like what time it was.
No, the concern was that when Scott traipsed down to his lab to gently poke him about said upgrade discussion – a common enough occurrence that prompted nothing but fondness at this point, exasperation banished years ago when it became clear it was just another one of the engineer’s quirks – Brains wasn’t there.
Holographic displays overlapped dizzyingly, numbers and equations far beyond Scott’s comprehension permeating the air, and there were several coffee mugs in varying stages of emptiness laying about the cluttered workspaces, but no engineer.
No MAX, either.
“Hello?” he called, just in case one of them was just out of his eyeline. Brains’ lab was a no-touch area, a lesson Scott had learnt the hard way as a teenager, poking around curiously at plans for what would eventually become the TV-21 and accidentally erasing a bunch of calculations.
Brains had been too timid to tell him off, new to the Tracys and more acquaintance than family back then, but it was the worst scolding Scott ever remembered getting from Dad.
He’d never touched anything in Brains’ labs since, Dad’s rebukes ringing in his ears whenever he so much as got close to a hologram.
There was no answer to his call and he carefully picked his way into the room, avoiding contact with anything Brains might have been working on just in case Brains was out of sight and deep enough in whatever he was doing to not hear him.
Still no sign of him. Cold coffee showed that there had been no recent check-ups by Grandma or Kayo bearing fresh nourishment for at least an hour, which meant he could have left the lab at any point. Scott had checked all the hangars first, and neither Brains nor MAX had been visible in any of those, and likewise there had been no sign of the duo in the den for the past several hours – which Scott knew because he’d been stuck at the desk doing paperwork the entire time.
Not in the hangars, not in the lab, and apparently not in the house, either. That was unusual enough just for Brains, let alone MAX as well. Scott frowned as he padded out of the room again, letting the door fall closed behind him. At this point it was more than just wanting the update about Thunderbird One’s engine upgrade – Brains was as predictable as they came, and could always be reliably found in one of those places. The fact that he was not was concerning.
The logical thing would probably be to call him directly, or get John to track his location, but before resorting to that, Scott had one more place to try, as unlikely as it seemed.
Even Brains had to sleep sometimes, and although he’d been known to more often than not crash in the lab or hangars, he was a member of the family and therefore did have his own bedroom. Located down near the lab at his own request, rather than up with the rest of them on the top two floors of the villa, it was used less frequently than it should be.
A half-jog down the hallway and up the single flight of stairs found him outside a plain door decorated only with a caricature of MAX waving. Scott remembered Virgil painting that – the little robot had been all too pleased to pose, although he’d been terrible at staying still long enough.
The door was closed, as always, and Scott stepped up to it, reaching out and knocking on the wood. “Brains?” he called. “Are you in there?”
If he wasn’t, then he really would need to go the technological route.
The door nudged open, slowly and much like Scott remembered doing himself as a kid when he didn’t want to disturb a sleeping-in John – or get caught by a parent – which was more than enough information to tell him who was opening it.
MAX’s bulk meant that he had to push the door all the way open before he could exit, no matter how quietly he did it, which gave Scott plenty of time to see into the room. Well, what could be seen.
The lights were all off, and it seemed like blackout blinds had been deployed as well, because the rest of the villa was well-lit, and while Scott very rarely had cause to go near Brains’ bedroom, he knew it got more natural light than was currently spilling across the floor and illuminating the occupied bed.
There were no defining features visible; a raised lump completely concealed by a blanket, and what looked like a pillow thrown over the head as well, indicated that someone was laying there, but in the poor lighting Scott could do little more than assume it was Brains.
MAX shut the door again before he could note anything else, but that was more than enough information to put the facts together into a coherent conclusion. The robot’s quiet chirp and flailing of one grabber-hand near what functioned as his head was unnecessary confirmation.
Scott had had his own share of migraines over the years. They were ruthless things that hit without much warning and certainly no regard for anything else he needed to be doing right then – worst of all had been one that had hit him on the way home from a rescue, where Thunderbird Five had had to save him from crashing. Thankfully, there had not yet been a repeat occurrence of that, but he’d been laid low by them a few times while at the desk as well.
He wasn’t the only one, either. John had been plagued with them reasonably frequently when they were younger, although being in space, of all things, seemed to have rescued him from that, and more than once Scott had had to tuck in Virgil with painkillers and blackout blinds engaged when the world got too much. Gordon and Alan had, to his knowledge, so far escaped.
It really wasn’t surprising to find that Brains was also a victim of migraines, although Scott felt a flash of guilt that he hadn’t known that before – how many times when Brains had vanished into what he had assumed was work in the lab had he actually spent the time in his room, trying to sleep off a mental assault?
As if reading his thoughts, MAX chirped again lightly, and produced a familiar box of medication briefly before swallowing it back up into his storage. It was a clear reminder that Brains wasn’t alone, and Scott gently patted his shell.
“Thanks for looking after him,” he murmured, and got a whistle in response. Scott couldn’t translate MAX’s communications like Brains could, or even John, but he was pretty sure that was an of course!
Still, robot nanny or not, Scott couldn’t in good conscious just walk away and leave Brains without doing something to help. MAX had medication under control, and he wasn’t going to mess with that, but from his brief look into the room, he hadn’t seen any water in reach.
“I’ll be back in a minute,” he told the robot, who chirped at him in what he assumed was some form of acknowledgement, before jogging to the kitchen and praying it was empty. He didnt need to be waylaid by a sibling – or worse, Grandma – on the errand, otherwise he’d have to explain himself (or dodge taste-testing requests).
His luck held, although that meant his family were scattered who-knew-where across the island, because barring John they were all supposedly home and he hadn’t seen any of them in some time, and a couple of minutes later he was back outside Brains’ door, glass of fresh water in hand.
MAX had vanished, presumably back inside the room, and Scott tapped lightly twice to alert him – and Brains, if Brains was awake and aware of anything except the migraine – before opening the door. Unlike the robot, Scott didn’t need the door to open fully to enter, and slipped through as soon as the crack widened enough to take him sidling sideways.
The lump on the bed hadn’t moved at all, and the room was still dark enough that Scott picked his way across the floor carefully. Brains tended to keep the clutter to the labs, but that didn’t guarantee there was nothing laying in wait on his bedroom floor and Scott had no intentions of tripping over and disturbing him. MAX scurried along in front of him, appearing from somewhere off to one side to lead the way to the table, and Scott obligingly followed the route he took. If a robot on wheels could get through, there was nothing for him to catch his foot on, after all.
Familiar chunky blue frames sat on the bedside table, one arm folded and the other still extended as though they’d been discarded in a hurry. Scott placed the water down beside them before folding the other arm in as well and leaving them neatly beside the glass, in easy reach of the bed. Standing right next to him, it was easier to see that Brains had, in fact, pulled the pillow over his head, one arm slung over it in order to keep it pinned. The blanket was neatly tucked around him in contrast to the haphazard placement of the glasses, and Scott could only assume that was MAX’s doing.
Were it one of his brothers, he would have coaxed the pillow away and found something else to help block out the light, but if MAX hadn’t already done that, there was no doubt a reason. Scott did lean over to check that Brains wasn’t suffocating himself, and was relieved to see that his head was turned ever so slightly to the side, leaving his mouth clear from both sheets and pillow. Reassured, and also aware that there was nothing else he could do for Brains except leave him to rest, he patted MAX on the shell again and picked his way back through the gloom of the room to the doorway. The robot followed him.
“Look after him,” Scott instructed, quietly, as though MAX needed the order. “Come get me if he needs anything.”
Another series of chirps and whistles implied that MAX considered himself perfectly capable of looking after Brains alone, and Scott was guiltily aware that he’d likely done exactly that on multiple occasions in the past.
“I know, I know,” he sighed, patting the shell again. “Thank you for staying with him.”
With one last chirp, MAX shut the door, leaving Scott back out alone in the hallway and feeling a little like he’d just been kicked out.
Thunderbird One clearly wasn’t getting her engine upgrades today, and with MAX playing nurse and guard, Scott wasn’t going to be able to spend any meaningful time with the engineer, either.
There was, however, always more paperwork to do.
With a quiet groan, and a muttered feel better soon directed at the shut door, Scott turned away and made the trudge back to the desk, where other responsibilities beckoned insistently.
He also needed to work out where the rest of his family had slunk off to. It was never innocent when the villa was so apparently-deserted, and Scott half expected a headache of his own to spring into life just thinking about the chaos that was likely brewing. It wouldn’t be the first time.

What Actually Is Déjà Vu? 5 Times Science Explained The Spookiest Sensations
Somewhere, in the UK, lives a 28-year-old man with a rather peculiar affliction.
As a result of his chronic anxiety, he suffers through near constant déjà vu. The French phrase means ‘already seen’, and refers to that oh-so-common feeling where you’re convinced that you’ve lived the current moment before.
You’ve been here and you’ve done that already.
He’s reportedly made so uncomfortable by supposedly repeating the same things day-after-day that he avoids reading the newspaper and watching the TV. He describes it as living in a constant time loop.
It sounds like a horror film. And that’s not far off how most people feel when they experience déjà vu.
Of course, for them, it’s like they’ve predicted the future or seen this all before in a mystical dream. But sometimes our spookiest feelings have the simplest explanations.
So, in honour of it being Halloween, let’s decode some of the strangest sensations believed to be induced by the supernatural and see what’s really causing them.
Tumblr media
What actually is déjà vu?
It’s an uncanny feeling, when you’re walking down a new street only to realise it doesn’t feel so new. Maybe the houses look familiar. Maybe you’ve heard the conversation of the couple passing you already.
Déjà vu is pretty unnerving, and always makes me think I’ve seen this moment in a dream. And if I am having a precognition, there must be a reason why! Is some tragic event about to happen in front of me? Is this a pre-destined moment that changes my fate?
Probably not.
There’s a few scientific explanations for this feeling.
There’s split perception, where you see the same sorta thing two different times. The first time you might see it out of the corner of your eye or be distracted when you're experiencing it. But your brain will take in more than you think and create a complete memory without you realising. The second time you experience a similar event, you’re not so distracted and your brain links it back to that memory.
Then there’s memory-based explanations. This is when our recognition memory is triggered by certain situations - even if they’ve never actually happened.
There’s also a dream-based explanation: you’ve probably experienced something like this in a dream, stowed it away as a memory and are reliving something just like it.
It’s difficult to research déjà vu as its occurrence is spontaneous. That being said, it has been associated with mental disorders, neurological problems and different medications.
Whilst we all experience it, it’s actually more common amongst sufferers of temporal lobe epilepsy and migraines with auras. Apparently, during seizures, it’s common to experience déjà vu or its sibling vibe, jamais vu.
Yes, you can also experience jamais vu (when something feels unfamiliar but is very familiar), déjà entendu (when you’re pretty sure you’ve heard something before) and déjà rêvé (when you think you’ve already dreamed of something that’s happening).
Tumblr media
The Fear Frequency
This one’s pretty cool.
Sometime in the 1980s, some engineer called Vic Tandy was working in a lab designing medical equipment. But soon the studious work environment shifted to one of fear and anxiety: lab technicians began to report that it was haunted.
Tandy didn’t think much of it. As a scientist, he was used to brushing off such claims. But then, working late one night, he began to experience something he thought was paranormal activity. His hair stood on end. He began to sweat. He felt as if he was being watched and grew more and more uncomfortable.
And then, out of the shadows, it appeared.
A grey shape shifted into his line of sight before vanishing into thin air.
He scuttled home in terror. The next day, he returned with trepidation. But he soon discovered something else odd: a fail blade in a vice was vibrating. What was making it vibrate?
It was a sound wave coming from an extractor fan. It was pitched at 19hz which is just below the human range of hearing. So we can’t hear it, but our bodies still vibrate without us knowing.
Our vision blurs. We get dizzy. We hyperventilate and experience serious discomfort. The infrasound, as it’s also known, generates just enough confusion to cause a haunting.
Electromagnetic Fields And Hypersensitivity
Electromagnetic fields are fields created by electric charges. Fluctuations within the field can cause strange smells or the feeling of being dizzy - things associated with haunted locations.
Scientists have attempted to prove haunted locations are actually just the result of EMFs, but it has so far created mixed results.
That being said, some people believe firmly that EMFs cause strange and sickening problems for humans. Electromagnetic hypersensitivity is the alleged sensitivity to electromagnetic fields. It results in a range of symptoms like headaches, fatigue, burning sensations and other health problems. It is reportedly brought on by close contact to electric fields and magnetic fields, like WiFi and mobile phones.
Okay, fine. This isn’t scientifically proven as a real illness. There’s no way to diagnose it and certainly no basis in science. On notable occasion, some residents in South African claimed they had EHS symptoms as a result of a cell tower near their homes. It was then revealed that the tower had been switched off six weeks prior to the claims.
Tumblr media
Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
This one’s important. If you think you’re experiencing paranormal activity, make sure you have a working carbon monoxide detector on hand. If you don’t think you’re experiencing paranormal activity but you don’t have a detector, get one. Most investigators will make this a priority, as poisoning can be lethal and explain a lot of alleged hauntings.
Carbon monoxide is a poisonous, tasteless and odourless gas. When you breathe it in, it can make you feel unwell. If you breathe in too much, you’ll die. Every year, there’s approx. 60 deaths in the UK due to carbon monoxide poisoning.
When you inhale it, it attaches itself to the hemoglobin in your cells. That’s what oxygen normally uses to get around the body. So, when it’s replaced with CO, you get less oxygen around the body. And eventually, your cells and tissues will die.
The symptoms of poisoning include dizziness, confusion, tiredness and difficulty breathing. This often translates to the feeling of pressure on the chest. Team that up with memory-loss, and you’ve got the perfect setup for an alleged haunting.
Maybe you’ll forget where you put something and be convinced *something* moved it? Perhaps you’ll feel an oppressive presence trying to strangle you?
In one famous Reddit post, a user expressed his concerns after he found post-it notes with an unknown person’s writing across his apartment. He was convinced someone was breaking in and didn’t know what to do.
It was when one user responded to the post and asked if he had a CO detector that the narrative changed. He had been writing himself post-its - and had just forgotten about them.
Sleep Paralysis
In most haunted house films - after the first hints of a poltergeist emerge - a character will wake up in the middle of the night with a start. Maybe they’ll hear a weird noise. Maybe they’ll feel the duvet pulled off the bed.
And then, they’ll see something emerge from the darkness. They’ll try to move. They’ll try to scream. But alas, they are pinned down by the beast!
Unfortunately, sleep paralysis is a common experience that conjures up a horror film scene. We think that a lot of the ghosts reportedly seen when someone is in bed are down to sleep paralysis as the hallucinations are very realistic.
Sleep paralysis occurs when the body alternates between REM (rapid eye movement) and NREM (non-rapid eye movement) sleep. During the former stage, our muscles basically switch off. But when we wake up before the cycle is complete, we are paralysed.
Tumblr media

the fall part seventeen - the sky is falling
basic summary: exactly what is says on the tin.
trigger warnings: stabbing, hypnotism
tagslist: @synonymsforzombie @spicydanhowell @skyewardlight @dreaming-of-stories-and-stars @cest-mellow @graveyardlettuce @lower-your-expectationss (i got so fucking close to forgetting the tagslist again but!! i remembered are y'all proud!!)
well, this certainly wasn't normal.
it looked like the sky was made of colourful lava. that was the only way marvin could think of to describe it. trails of thick magma looking chunks falling and hitting the ground, almost glitching but never actually harming anyone. it seemed that none of the nomags could see it, which wasn't surprising, given the veil, but with the way it had been collapsing recently, it had affected them in other ways. the nomags were starting to glitch the same way that anti did, the way everything seemed to do now that jackie has fucked things up. nothing stayed still anymore. marvin was really beginning to worry.
"if it's not hurting anyone, then we're ok," chase said to him uncertainly, holding louise and connor close to him. "right?"
chase had called stacy already, but she had no clue what was going on, the veil seemingly shielding her too. "why can't mama see the falling sky?" connor had asked him, and then the lot of them had tried to figure out why louise and connor could see through the veil when no other nomag's could. chase was certain it was just their blood relation to him, and the reason he could see it was his blood relation to marvin, jackie and henrik. none of them were quite certain how that worked, but they honestly had bigger problems to deal with right now.
the first call marvin had received was from naomi. "have you seen the fucking sky?" she shouted immediately, and marvin pulled the phone away from his ear, wincing. "it looks - it looks like -"
"sky lava?" marvin guessed. "and there's no need to shout, i'm right here."
"sorry," she said, much quieter. "and i was gonna say "fire clouds," but lava i guess i can see. anyway, what the fuck is this shit? is it to do with jackie again? i'm trying to contact lucas, but he won't pick up."
marvin sighed, listening to chase and henrik attempt to reassure connor and louise about the sky. difficult to do when none of them knew what was going on. "lucas was round with us for a while, but he left a few hours ago. he was texting chase not long ago too, so don't worry. i'm gonna try to contact kazuki or someone else from hecate, katy or charlie or mateo, just someone. hopefully we can somehow sort this."
"ok, ok," naomi said slowly. "ok. unrelated, but - i think anti was just round at my shop? asking for your address?"
marvin frowned. "when was this?"
"like, five minutes ago, not even. he left before i saw the sky and called you." something clattered on her end. "shit. so what's up with him? he was acting so weird."
marvin was about to answer when he saw a sleek white car pull up outside, and blinked when he saw who was inside. "naomi, i think i might have to call you back. i'm pretty sure kazuki just drove to our house."
"kazuki?" naomi asked. and sure enough, a tall woman in jeans and a perfectly sized white hoodie had stepped out, making eye contact with marvin through the window. marvin furrowed his brow, throwing both hands up in a what the fuck? gesture.
"yep, it's her," he said, stepping away from the window and marching towards the door purposefully. "i'll call you back soon. love you."
he clicked off and threw open the front door. kazuki was already there, chin lifted and a serious look on her face. "mr mcloughlin," she said. "i take it you've seen the sky."
"i have, yes," he said, raising an eyebrow. "never seen you dress so casually, kaz. the world must be ending."
"ha, ha," she said dryly. "i got dressed quickly. and don't call me kaz. now, the main problem." she waved a hand upwards. "i believe this is -"
"- to do with jackie?" marvin sighed. his eyes flickered to the ground. "it always is, isn't it."
kazuki nodded grimly. "may i come inside? the clouds are on fire and i have gotten three hours of sleep. i may need coffee."
marvin stepped aside to let her in. "i was just on a call with naomi. she actually said the same thing about fire clouds. personally, i think it looks like sky lava."
"naomi who?" kazuki asked, marching briskly through the kitchen. chase, connor and louise looked up in shock, and marvin shrugged, grimacing. "also, that's ridiculous. fire and lava don't even look the same."
"uh, hello," chase said faintly, blinking. "nice to see you here, uh - connor, louise, this is miss kamata. she's a magician like uncle marvin."
at those words, connor promptly leapt from his papa's lap and bounced up to kazuki excitedly. "oh, oh, you do magic too?" he squealed. "can i see? uncle marvin does such cool stuff, he lights his hand on fire and makes cool shapes appear in the air like uncle jackie does, only uncle jackie is way better at it and he can draw glowing dragons in the air!"
kazuki raised an eyebrow at the boy, who was practically vibrating with excitement. "well… i do air magic. i make things fly."
connor's eyes bulged, and his jaw dropped so far his mouth formed a perfect o. "no! way!" he gushed. "that's - that's so, so cool!"
chase chuckled, tapping the table to get his son's attention. "come on, con. miss kamata is busy right now. maybe you can see another day, but not now."
connor deflated. "these fire clouds are ruining everything," he mumbled, slinking over back to his father's lap.
marvin took that opportunity to restart his conversation. "it's naomi gudmundson," he explained. "agrokinesis magician? she's with hecate? how can you not know your own members?"
kazuki had recovered from connor's brief word dump, and was now leaning against the washing machine, shrugging. "i may know her. i recognize the last name, and i doubt it's all that common here. anyway, that's not what i'm here to talk to you about."
"are you here to talk about the the fire clouds?" louise piped up, to everyone's surprise. as soon as she'd said it she snuggled back on her father's lap, watching her legs swing under the new kitchen table. kazuki smiled at the child softly.
"i am," she said. "i do believe your… uncle jackie may be involved in this. are you…" she hesitated, and glanced towards marvin. she lowered her voice. "what do they know?"
"they think he's moved away," marvin whispered. "chase panicked. we couldn't just tell them - it would fucking kill them to find out what he did, so we told them he went to ireland for a while."
kazuki nodded, then turned back to the kids and smiled again. "your uncle might have come back. but… he's a little bit different now."
chase shook his head suddenly. "hey - hey, we don't know that," he said weakly. "he might not be - we haven't seen him since the incident at hecate, how would we know if he was coming back?"
kazuki gestured towards the window. "fire clouds," she deadpanned. "this isn't normal weather magic. it's something to do with the veil and we only know of one person who's been involved in that."
"jackie can't have anything to do with this," chase said firmly, seemingly having forgotten about the kids on his lap. "i've seen his magic, me and henrik both, it was nothing like this. i don't give a fucking shit about the goddamn veil. this is all -"
he suddenly remembered himself and flushed, shoulders shooting to his ears. "uh… don't use any of the words papa's using right now," he said quietly. connor and louise just looked at each other and giggled, bouncing on chase's legs and making him wince.
"i'll take them," henrik said, getting up quickly and clapping his hands. chase smiled gratefully, and the kids happily bounced to their feet to follow their uncle out into the hall and up the stairs to the kid's room, leaving marvin, chase and kazuki alone. a short, awkward silence followed.
"sorry for - that," chase mumbled, not looking up. "i'm stressed and being an asshole. god, i think i'm getting a fudging migraine too, christ."
"it's alright," kazuki said, also not looking up. "this is a lot. i have hecate members attempting to track the source of this whole sky thing, but there… doesn't appear to be one. it's everywhere. although, a few people have told me they are detecting some sort of magic signal somewhere. but apparently that's untraceable too, because of course it is." she sighed, flexing her hands and blowing hair out of her face. "i… i don't know what to do now. and i don't say that often."
marvin bit his lip, clicking his tongue softly. "mm. i - don't know either. i mean… i guessed we just have to wait and see what happens."
and they did. about fifteen minutes of small talk and awkward tea/coffee drinking passed, the three of them politely discussing everything but the weather as, funnily enough, that wasn't a great topic to help distract them from the issue at hand. however, they were all surprised to hear someone knock at the door, breaking the silence. marvin looked to the others for confirmation on what to do. both of them shrugged. marvin rolled his eyes and cracked the door slightly, startling when he saw who it was on the other side.
"anti," he sighed, breathing out slowly. "not sure who i was expecting. this is a bad time, man."
anti just raised his eyebrows. he looked worse off than when marvin had last seen him: hair yanked behind his ears, a bruise on his cheek, yellow scarf even more dirty looking. "i take it you've seen the sky lava?"
marvin gave a small, disbelieving laugh. "i fucking knew it looked like lava! kazuki, chase and henrik are saying it looks like fire -" he caught himself. "anyway. yes, i've seen it. kinda hard not to, wouldn't you say?"
anti shrugged. "i don't know, i'm partially colourblind and didn't notice until the bloody meteors or whatever started falling. speaking of, the things might not hurt, but they are very annoying. can i come inside?"
marvin threw his head back and sighed. "this shit again? seriously? i said it was a bad time." he wasn't sure letting anti in while the kids were here was a good idea, even though they were upstairs with henrik and most likely wouldn't hear or see anything. "can't you… i don't know, go bother… whoever it is that you bother when you're not fucking with us?"
"whatever people i bother when i'm not fucking with you are dead," anti signed flatly. his eyes flickered from an orangey brown to a dark blue, and marvin resisted the urge to step back. for a moment, he looked just like jackie. "i don't have shit else to do, and as much as i despise coming to you for help, i don't have much of a choice these days, do i?"
marvin suddenly frowned. "man, are you ok?"
anti blinked. "why?"
"i - you're shaking," marvin pointed out. "i don't know, you just… kind of look like you're in the middle of a panic attack."
anti scoffed and rolled his eyes despite how pale he had gone. marvin could hear his quick, laboured breaths from where he was standing. "no," he signed, like marvin was being ridiculous. "i'm fine. let me in, bitch."
marvin didn't believe him. but if henrik was upstairs, he figured it should be ok. first, he had a question. "why were you bothering naomi?"
anti frowned. "i... wasn't?"
"yes you were," marvin said. "she said you were just round at her shop."
"was not," anti scoffed. "i was halfway across town. walked all the way here. now let me in, i'm not used to feeling human temperatures and it's bloody baltic out here."
marvin sighed and finally stepped aside to let him in. anti slipped past and immediately froze, eyes wide and pupils dilated, fixed on kazuki still leaning on the sideboards. his hand immediately flashed to his side, bringing out a small switchblade and holding it out in front of him.
"woah - woah, anti, put it down!" marvin cried, jumping between him and kazuki. "she's not here to hurt you, we're just trying to figure out what's wrong with the sky, nothing more, ok? let's just - calm down, ok?"
anti didn't move. despite his uninterrupted trembling, his hand was steady on the knife. kazuki had barely flinched at his reaction, and stayed very still so as not to alarm him. "i'm just here to help marvin, anti," she said gently. "i'm not planning to hurt you, even after your little escape. i swear. i know you've been through a lot, and i'm not going to make it any worse for you. if it helps any, i'll stay right here so i won't scare you."
anti's face contorted with anger, but he couldn't sign while holding the knife, and after a moment he flipped it closed and put it back in his pocket, not blinking. "you don't fucking scare me," he spat once he'd freed up his hand. "you're just another pathetic fucking magician who relies on others to do your work for you. i could kill you even without my magic and the use of one of my hands."
marvin didn't translate any of that. "ok, so now what?" he said instead, glancing out the window behind kazuki's head. "sky's still going and we don't know why. kaz - kazuki, are you sure you don't know anything?"
she sighed, closing her eyes for a second. "sit down," she said, gesturing towards the table and pulling out a seat for herself. "i might be able to try and explain."
marvin sat down across from her and chase, who was on his phone and had been silent this whole time. he turned round to see anti still hovering hesitantly, hands hanging in the air. marvin pat the seat next to him. "you can sit down," he said, trying to keep his voice light. anti slowly shook his head, eyes darting back and forth to the door behind him, and marvin decided it'd be best to leave him be.
kazuki cleared her throat. "so. that necklace your brother has… i recognized it before i even saw it for that split second in new romney. i'm not sure of its actual name, but i am aware of its uses. i believe… it's some kind of soul holder."
everyone went very quiet for a moment, until marvin spoke again. "ok. please elaborate."
kazuki took a breath, tapping the table with her fingernails. "well. many years ago, there were all sorts of black magic artifacts that were used to enhance, give or take power. those who later split from hecate wanted to use that magic. we - the rest of us told them it was a bad idea. eventually, when the split happened, we took as many artifacts as we could and destroyed them." she let out a small sigh, closing her eyes. "it seems that some were… left. i'm not sure how many they still have, but jackie has gotten a hold of one and given his lack of previous black magic use, it seems that it's becoming too much for him to handle."
"you said soul holder," chase suddenly said, the first words he'd spoken since anti had arrived. he rubbed his temple, wincing. "are there… different types of these artifacts? and how do you know this one does, uh, whatever you think it does?"
she nodded grimly. "there's a few types, yes. some destroy. some kill. and some… do what your brother's one does. i believe that it takes souls into the necklace and, well, holds them there." she leaned her head back, sighing. "i can't think of a better way to explain it except that it's… hundreds of years old. who knows what types of magic has been contained in it? what people? we have no idea how powerful he could be."
anti suddenly clapped his hands, drawing their attention to him. "so hold on," he signed, still using the one hand. "this bitch has stolen a part of my fucking soul and that's how he's using my magic?"
kazuki looked to marvin, who loosely translated for her. once he'd finished, she sighed and glanced up to anti again. "i'm afraid so," she said. "from what i've seen, that's all it could be. i'm very sorry."
"motherfucker," anti signed, which marvin chose not to translate.
just then, they heard loud yelling from upstairs, and two sets of pounding footsteps racing down the steps above. "papa, papa!" the voices of two children cried, giggling all the while and getting louder as they got closer. "papa, uncle henrik just showed us something super cool, look, look -"
the children ran into the kitchen, laid eyes on anti, and froze.
anti didn't move.
there was a long moment where connor and louise just stared at him, confused looking. marvin held his breath, making eye contact with chase across the table. neither man said a word.
it was connor who eventually spoke. "uncle jackie?"
henrik appeared in the doorway behind them and also froze. "christ, him again?"
"oh!" louise suddenly shouted. "it's the london man!"
"oh yeah!" connor cried, grinning. "the man who wasn't papa who took us to london!"
"took you to london?" kazuki said, frowning. "what do you mean?"
"we're seriously just going to let him in yet again?" henrik said angrily, glaring at marvin. "seriously? after all the times we agreed not to trust him?"
"listen, i didn't want to," marvin argued. "but in case you hadn't noticed, circumstances are slightly different now -"
"can everyone just shut up?" chase suddenly cried, clutching his head and leaping to his feet. "i have a bloody migraine and god, you're all so fu- so loud, christ, i'm…" he shook his head and marched over to the door, grabbing a brown jacket off the coat rack. "i'm going for a walk or something, fire clouds and sky lava be damned. i don't… i'm done with this." he turned to face the room, which had gone very quiet. his eyes landed on henrik. "henny, will you come with?"
henrik hesitated, glancing at the kids. "it's - i don't know if it's safe, and -"
"i'll look after the kids," marvin said quickly. he smiled at chase reassuringly, who smiled back. "be safe out there, if you really have to go out. and be back within, like, ten minutes, preferably. please."
"we will," chase said gratefully. he opened the door and stepped outside. "thanks, marvy."
marvin flinched at the name. only jackie calls me that, he thought, but chase and henrik were gone before he could say a word.
-
"so where are we going?" henrik asked, practically jogging to keep up with his brother. chase was walking very quickly, which worried henrik slightly, especially given that he'd said he had a migraine. however, he brushed off his concerns with a small laugh. "slow down, chaser. i'm not in the mood to - ha, to chase you."
he could tell something was wrong when chase didn't laugh at his pun. "sorry," chase mumbled instead. "i'm just… feeling weird. i don't know… it's too much."
henrik slowed, heart suddenly racing. "uh, chase? i think we should go back. if you're feeling this unwell -"
"no," chase interrupted, and it sounded almost like a sob. his eyes were oddly dark. "no, i can't. don't - leave me."
he sped up the pace, leaving henrik to race after him. "chase - wait!" he cried. what was happening, why was he acting so strangely? he got the feeling this wasn't a normal migraine at all. "chase, slow. where are you going? chase!"
they rounded a corner, and chase suddenly stopped dead. his expression had gone totally blank, eyes wide and unfocused. his mouth was hanging open very slightly, hands dropped by his side.
henrik waved a hand in front of his face, breathing quickening. "chase? bruder? hello, are you -"
"henrik," came a voice from behind him. henrik's blood suddenly ran cold. "you're just in time for the show."
-
this was beginning to get very awkward.
marvin had attempted to usher the kids back upstairs, but that would leave kazuki and anti alone in the kitchen, which not only was a horrendous combination of people to leave alone, but was very rude to do. so they were now sitting in the living room watching octonauts on the tv, with marvin dithering in the doorway between the kitchen and the hall, trying to keep everything and everyone together. thankfully, connor and louise had stopped questioning anti's presence as soon at the familiar theme tune had started playing, leaving marvin to mostly focus on the other two. anti was pacing the kitchen ignoring kazuki, who was trying to talk to him. it was starting to become slightly annoying.
"is your arm still hurt?" kazuki was saying, as anti pretended he was suddenly deaf. "i can try to help if you'd show me it. we have healers in hecate - in fact, isn't your brother a healer? the doctor?"
"not my brother," anti suddenly signed. he flipped his hood up over his head, turning his face away from them. "fuck off, gods. always in other people's business."
there was a sudden noise from outside. a bang, like an explosion. kazuki stood and followed marvin to the window, looking outside to try and figure out what it was.
"i don't see anything," marvin muttered. the sky looked the same, and nothing seemed to be out of place. "what the fuck?"
"uncle marvin?" connor called from the other room. "what's going on?"
another bang sounded, and this time they could see a plume of black smoke rising over the buildings not far off from where they were. "ah, crap," marvin hissed, hands flying to his hair. "chase and henrik - we have to go after them, they could be in trouble."
kazuki shook her head. "the little ones," she reminded them. "we can't leave them alone."
connor and louise had padded into the hallway to see what was happening, eyes wide. marvin hesitated. he needed to make sure henrik and chase were safe, but he could need kazuki's help, and anti obviously couldn't stay with them. "oh - i don't know!" he despaired. "i - i have to see they're ok."
"papa and uncle henrik?" louise said softly. she was clutching her sonic teddy in her hands, her bottom lip quivering. "we wanna go make sure they're ok too! did the sky dragons get them?"
marvin glanced back into the kitchen at anti, who had stopped pacing and was staring out the window in there, and then back to kazuki, who looked slightly worried. he hesitated. "kazuki - can you stay here with them?"
"me?" she sounded shocked. "i - i am the leader of hecate's international network of magic, and right now there is magic related events happening that i need to -"
"please, kaz?" marvin turned to her with wide eyes, pleading. "just for a little bit? please, i'd owe you so so much, i just can't leave them alone, kazuki…"
kazuki inhaled sharply, then blew the air out her cheeks, groaning. "fine! you better not be long. i don't think i'm all that good with kids."
marvin threw his arms around her briefly, grinning. "thank you so much, kaz, i owe you!" then he turned to the confused looking kids, smiling at them. "kazuki is going to look after you two for a little bit, ok?"
"can we see the magic?" connor gasped. he grabbed louise's hand, squealing. "louise, we get to see the magic!"
kazuki laughed nervously, making a face in marvin's direction. "yes, i can show you some magic. let's go in here, uh - the living room, yes? what's this playing on the tv?"
marvin took the opportunity to leave, pausing at the door to look at anti. "well? are you coming?" he asked. anti jumped, and marvin raised an eyebrow. "come on, i'm not leaving you here alone."
anti shrugged, but followed him out the door, marvin locking it shut behind him. the smoke plumes were rising even higher, and the resounding booms were still sounding from not far off. "fucking hell," marvin muttered. anti glitched in agreement. "let's hurry up and -"
"marvin! marvin!"
he recognized the sound of chase's voice immediately. "chase!" he raced down the pavement, struggling not to slip as he followed his brother's voice. "chase, chase - shit!"
because fuck, jackie was standing in the middle of the street with aaron by his side, henrik and chase standing in front of them and staring blankly, eyes black and unfocused. it was such a scene that all marvin could do was stare. taking it in. his brothers, hypnotized, standing in the street, just… here. he couldn't breathe.
anti made a loud choking noise at the sight of jackie, taking an unwittingly step away. jackie smirked at him. "aw, anti, good to see you again. are you seriously afraid of me now? i thought you were above fear, isn't that what you told me once?" he laughed, and turned to marvin. his black eyes flashed coldly. "hello, marvy."
"jackie," marvin blurted. his chest tightened, taking in his older brother's form. his hair was shorter, almost as short as henrik's, and he was wearing a black jacket over a dark grey hoodie. so unlike his normal colourful clothing. it made marvin's head spin. "jackie, what have you done to chase and henrik? let - let them go, please."
jackie inhaled, dragging out his breath and tilting his head back. the silence was fucking deafening. all marvin could hear was the blood rushing in his ears and the silent, agitated hum of static rising from anti's direction.
"i can't do that," jackie said softly. "i have to protect them. from him, and apparently... from you."
marvin's heart stopped. "what do you mean?"
jackie laughed harshly. "look at you. you're with him, aren't you?" he nodded towards anti, a look of disgust crossing his face. "this pathetic, glitching mistake of a being who's brought nothing but harm on our family, and you want to befriend him. clearly, henrik and chase aren't safe around you if you're willing to put them in such constant danger."
"you're - you're more of a danger to them than anti is right now," marvin stammered, trying to keep his voice steady. "jackie, this isn't you. you're not like this. please, listen -"
"i don't think it's up to you to decide who he is, magician," aaron interrupted. he was leaning on a bright blue bat, grinning cheekily. like this was a game. marvin didn't spare him a breath, keeping his eyes trained on jackie.
"this is… the black magic talking," marvin faltered. his hands felt very warm. he hadn't used any magic since he'd nearly hurt chase, and he was suddenly scared. "jackie, this is the black magic talking. we - we can get it out of your head! we can! you - we - this can be fixed, ok? just let our brothers go and we can help you."
jackie's expression softened. "marvin," he murmured, and marvin took a shaking breath, hope rising in his chest. "oh, marvin. i'm so sorry. you… you really believe in me, don't you?"
anti growled, the sound of static spiking. jackie grinned at him, and for a moment marvin couldn't see him any differently than the man who had always been so sweet to him, the man he'd called his brother. then it vanished, and jackie was a stranger, sneering at anti's rising rage. "i did miss you, aiden. five months is a lot of time to bond! we were so close, wouldn't you agree?" he laughed, a real, loud laugh. "and put the butter knife away, unless you're planning to make toast."
marvin had been so thrown by the "aiden" comment that he hadn't noticed anti taking out his switchblade again. it took a second for marvin to register what anti was about to do, and by then it was too late. "anti, no!"
the knife was flying towards aaron's face before marvin could blink. but the man was ready; his bat was raised to his face to block the blade in an instant, a swoop of magic covering his body. jackie stepped forwards and threw his arm up, creating a black shield to cover for anti's sudden attack.
"stop it!" marvin screamed as anti kicked out at jackie's shield, knocking him off balance. aaron immediately lunged for anti while his back was turned, and marvin made the split second decision to throw out a burning hand and shove aaron back, standing between the two of them.
aaron flashed a white grin. "you don't have to be involved in this fight. really, just let us take the glitch and you and your brothers are free. why is that such a hard decision?"
marvin gave a breathy laugh. "oh, i wish i knew," he said, and let the magic in his body loose.
he had been so afraid of this. of his magic exploding the way naomi's had. but now, he suddenly hated everything about this man, this smirking blonde idiot who'd helped take jackie away from them. he hated him and his magic reflected that. great swirls of concentrated power that wrapped around aaron and squeezed him, making him gasp. but it didn't last. aaron lashed out, and a solid black whip hit marvin in the face, burning into his skin. he screamed in agony, dropping his own magic to fight against the pain. aaron laughed and knocked marvin's legs out from under him, kicking him down to the ground.
he could see anti fighting - trying to fight - against jackie above him. jackie had seemingly overpowered him easily, lifting him into the air without even touching him. "pathetic!" he giggled, darkness trailing down his skin from his eyes and hands. "aiden, aiden, you used to be so powerful. what happened to you? oh, wait." he tossed back his head and roared with laughter. "i did, didn't i? it's funny, cause i'm powerful enough without your weak ass magic in my body. i don't even need it. but i truly do enjoy the irony of being able to do - this!"
a glitch ran through jackie's body and through his wall of magic, reaching anti and throwing him to the ground like a ragdoll. he slammed to the road beside marvin, crying out as his back cracked. aaron turned to jackie and straightened, his boot digging harder into marvin's chest.
"well, that was easy," jackie joked, grabbing aaron's hand. the two of them laughed for a second, and marvin managed to slowly turn his head and make eye contact with anti. turquoise eyes meeting brown. it reminded marvin of the day he'd freed anti from the music shop basement, of the exact moment jackie had discovered that marvin knew. the shared moment, the single shared thought.
we're fucked.
but they'd gotten out of that situation. and how had they done that? oh, oh, shit. he remembered. he remembered.
"now what?" aaron said, as he and jackie leaned over them. anti weakly tried to get up, and aaron whacked his chest with his bat to make him fall back. jackie grinned at him, the two sharing a knowing smile.
"well, now i take the glitch and…" his expression wavered as he looked at marvin. "well, he can go, i guess. all we need is this guy!" he kicked anti's side again. "hear that, marv? you're home free."
he clicked his fingers, and marvin heard chase and henrik both gasp, collapsing to the floor. he'd almost forgotten they were still standing there, black eyed and hypnotized. hopefully they now wouldn't be conscious enough to see what he was about to do. "come on, anti, up you get!" jackie said cheerfully. he reached down and grabbed anti's right arm, delighting in his pained cry. "oops, almost forgot you were still injured! almost. right, let's go -"
"you forget a lot," marvin spat. jackie's head snapped round to look at him, and marvin scowled. "you get on at me for not noticing shit, but hey - i can at least remember what types of magic my brothers specialize in."
jackie didn't manage to get another word out before marvin unleashed a wave of the magic he said he'd never use again. his own black magic. not as strong as jackie's, but he knew how to control it better, and it was just enough to shock him and aaron away, leaving marvin a gap to leap to his feet and fight back again.
a second chance, he thought. don't waste it, marvin.
aaron made an instant dash for anti while jackie went for marvin, but he was too quick for them this time. a fiery shield rose up in front of him, and marvin managed to reach out a hand to yank anti up before one of them got to him again. "you ok?" he asked quickly, and anti managed a nod despite the clear pain he was in. marvin nodded back. "good. stay back."
more magic. so much of it, marvin wasn't sure whose was whose anymore. aaron was the one he was concerned about; he clearly had far more control and practice with his magic, and was forcing marvin back with hit after hit of his crumbling black whips that arched from his bat like a wicked extension of himself. marvin couldn't seem to take him out. he panted, cursing under his breath, beads of sweat dripping down his face from the exertion of the fight. he couldn't take them both at once. he wasn't sure he'd even be able to just take jackie if he had to. he couldn't do this, he couldn't, he just couldn't -
and then aaron fell back with a gasp, all his magic dropping at once. and anti, pale and shaking but grinning smugly, yanked the knife he'd picked up out from his back.
"butter knife," he signed painstakingly with his bruised right hand. "how's that for butter knife?"
"shit -" jackie gasped, but marvin hadn't let the distraction pass him by, and cried out a spell that froze jackie to the spot, wrapping him in a tight rope of magic. the spells were so exhausting that he almost passed out then and there - he hadn't used dark magic in so long, and it had really drained him. luckily, anti scrambled to his side and grabbed his arm, keeping him upright. his hands were stained with blood. marvin watched as aaron fell to his knees, clutching at his chest in pain.
"bastard," jackie spat, writhing to free himself of marvin's bonds. his eyes had melted back to their original blue, and they were wild, focused on aaron now groaning on the ground. "bastard, bastard, let me go, don't you dare hurt him! you have no idea what you've done! no i̢d̸ea ͝at all!"
jackie let out a frustrated scream, tearing at the ropes with both restrained hands. anti and marvin glanced at each other, stepping back silently as blackness seeped out from jackie's chest and began to form into a solid shape in front of him. marvin held up a protective arm in front of anti as something began to create itself, the magic knitting into the shape of what looked to be a person. over the roar of magic, they could hear jackie laughing. "this one's for you, anti!" he cackled. "have you missed him?"
and oh, oh, oh shit. it was a person. a real person who had formed from jackie's magic, a man with curly black hair and blank brown eyes, staring ahead at nothing. marvin heard anti's breath hitch at the sight of him, and a single look at him showed he'd somehow gone even paler, mouth hanging open slightly in disbelief.
"that's right!" jackie cried, looking pleased despite his current situation. "i've seen your memories, anti, i've seen -"
and then marvin saw -
"you're… you smell like magic," came a voice. it was him, the curly haired man, speaking with a warm scottish accent. "harsh, like fire, or an overheating computer." he snorted, trying to keep eye contact with - with anti, because anti was there, different looking. no scars on his face, no scar on his neck, hair much shorter and a dark green colour. "do you do magic?"
and then both of them were sitting in what looked like a park, eating sausage rolls out of paper bags, two guitars abandoned on their laps as they talked faintly, eyes sparkling. "you're a dumbass!" anti laughed, and marvin had never seen him smile so genuinely before.
and then they were sitting very close to each other on the floor in a dark room, a song playing in the background as their faces touched, eyes closed and lips brushing -
"stop!" marvin yelled, struggling to shake himself from the memories. anti had all but collapsed, clinging to marvin's arms and shaking badly, terror and anger both making rounds on his face. "stop, how - jackie, stop, why are you doing this?"
marvin's magic had faltered, leaving jackie to step out of the bonds and fall to aaron's side. he lifted him in his arms, looking worried, feeling the blood on the man's back. "because he ruined our lives!" jackie screamed, and his eyes had turned black again, tears gathering in them as he clung to aaron's unconscious body. "how, how can you stand to be near him? he deserves to be hurt!"
the curly haired man hadn't moved since jackie had formed him, but now he was crumbling, dissolving into black dusty magic and retreating into jackie's body. like he had been there for nothing but show. through it all, marvin could still see chase and henrik, passed out on the road. at least they were safe. at least there was that.
"please," marvin croaked in a weak last ditch attempt to stop this. "jackie, you're my brother, i love you, i don't want to hurt you."
"you see good in anyone," jackie whispered. the sky above was almost screaming now, the colours beginning to whirl above jackie's had. despite the noise, marvin could still clearly hear his brother's voice. "even him. even me."
marvin was about to say something - something, anything, he wasn't sure what - when he stopped, listening, smelling the sharp scent that was suddenly filling the air. like a storm, like rain. judging by the look on jackie's face, he could smell it too. he stood unsteadily, lifting aaron in his arms. "what the fu-"
the black magic still lingering in the air parted. silver sparks clearing the air, even clearing the sky above, warming everything and bringing about that smell, the smell marvin realized was familiar. he gasped, almost laughing as jackie whirled round, looking to see who it was who dared to challenge him.
a man. messy dark hair and freckled skin, a mustache underneath his nose. a dark blue hoodie hanging off of him. eyes that glowed silver, hands that glowed silver, magic that stayed suspended in the air, silver. the world seemed to stop.
jameson jackson.
"you again," jackie spat. he couldn't even raise a hand to defend himself with both arms wrapped around aaron, who had stirred slightly and was moaning in pain. "my god, don't you get a hint?"
jamie raised a hand in front of him, not saying a word. the threat hung in the air along with the silver particles of solid magic that carried the weight of time in them. he looked so tired. he looked so powerful. marvin almost wouldn't have recognized him.
jackie growled softly, looking back and forth between marvin, anti and jamie. he seemed to realize how outnumbered he was, and shrank back, hoisting aaron higher in his arms. "watch your backs," he hissed angrily, eyes blazing. then he was gone, really gone.
anti pushed himself off of marvin, swaying on his feet. he couldn't take his eyes off jamie, who had lowered his arm and let his eyes return to their usual grey. he was staring back. for a long moment, the two just stood there, unmoving. afraid to break the year long silence.
"jamie," marvin suddenly said. and it was hitting him now that this was really him, his little brother, the artistic time traveler who he hadn't seen in so long, who had just disappeared without a trace. "jamie, oh my god, jamie!"
he raced past anti and threw his arms around jamie, muffled sobs escaping his lips as he buried his face in the smaller man's shoulder. jamie hugged him back tightly, and then pulled away with a huge grin. "marvin," he signed. "it's you."
he looked over marvin's shoulder and frowned, pulling the magician over to chase and henrik, who were now starting to regain consciousness, eyelids flickering. "jackie did this?" jamie signed, concern flickering across his face. "help me, we have to take them home. they should be ok, but just to make sure."
marvin had so many questions he suddenly wanted to ask. but he instead lifted chase into his arms, helping him stand while jamie did the same with henrik. questions could wait. jamie was home. nothing else mattered.
and when marvin turned to say something to anti, he had disappeared.
end act three - mind games.
