The Beginners Guide To Buying Used Woodworking Tools

Whether you're an experienced woodworking craftsman or a total rookie you can save money by purchasing used woodworking equipment instead of new tools.

Used woodworking tools still have plenty of useful life left in them and usually are being sold by someone who is looking to find a good home for them.

Where to buy used tools

When looking for used woodworking tools, several sources come to mind.

The first is garage sales and estate sales. Many people buy tools with great intentions but after a few years of the tools collecting dust in the garage or cellar, the original owner is ready to part with them.

That's good news for you because you just know that they have barely been used and the seller needs the cash. The next place I would look is in the local classified ads and the local thrift paper or penny-saver newspaper. Weekend flea markets are another good place to find used tools, and lastly, I would look on eBay.

When buying woodworking tools, be sure to inspect them closely before parting with your money. Yes, there will be some wear on them, but they should not be worn out. Hammer handles should be tight in the hammerhead.

Saws should be still sharp, not bent or missing teeth. Hand planes should have blades without any nicks or gouges. Chisels should not have any deep gouges in the cutting edge (although chisels are fairly easy to get sharpened).

Rulers should have legible markings. If you are buying power tools, be sure to ask the owner to plug them in and demonstrate that they actually work. Don't forget your most important tool and that is your Eye Safety Glasses or goggles!

When buying tools, be sure to buy the tools you need to complete your project. Your woodworking project plans should be telling you what tools and materials you need to complete the project.

Be sure you have the right tools for the job. If you cannot find the tools you need to use, then, by all means, go to your local home improvement store and buy new ones. While you are there, ask the floor person if they have a bargain bin or a section where returned tools are on clearance.

In this slow economy, it's not unusual for people to buy a tool for a home improvement job and then return it when they are done using it. You might pick up a well-used power tool like a circular saw just because someone decided to return it to the store.

One of projects I saw was for a modern wardrobe but the details on how to put it together were terrible.

You have to start guessing at where to attach carriage bolts, etc. Another was that the top back board is not straight as it has design to it which was not explained.

So I took paper template and drew out and traced on boards best I could for one of my students.

These so called "step by step" plans make woodworking harder than it actually is.

Because they:

Projects that don't turn out like how the way you want it to be...

Don't include cut sheets - so you have to 'guesstimate' materials

Make it look easier than they end up being - as they have missing steps or inaccurate measurements.

Include pictures don't match what they're telling you!

No wonder woodworking seem so hard!

Let's buy a Japanese plane on eBay

Some time ago I wrote a post about buying Japanese chisels on eBay. Then I went and bought one, and it's turned out to be pretty nice.

So I thought I would walk through the process of buying a Japanese plane on eBay. It's kind of weird that I didn't cover this already, as almost every Japanese plane I have has come from eBay, as opposed to my chisels, which I almost always bought new.

In any case, if you're looking to try out a Japanese plane, eBay is a good place to start. Here's how I go about doing it.

First, I've set up a saved search for used Japanese tools on eBay, and I check it out every day. Not that I need to get additional tools at this point, but it gives me an idea of what the market is like for Japanese tools. You may want to do the same thing for a while before chasing down a used Japanese plane.

There are some things to keep in mind regarding Japanese planes on eBay.

1. Know the Japanese plane market

I’m often asked what a good price for a Japanese plane is. Short answer — I think $150-200 is a decent price. This is based on a long time looking at eBay auctions for Japanese planes. I've been looking at eBay for used Japanese tools for quite a while now, and I think I have a reasonable sense for the Japanese plane market on eBay. Again, it's very much worth it to set up a search for Japanese planes on eBay and look at it every day for a while so you can get a sense for what's out there yourself. 

In the meantime, here’s what I’ve figured out.

There are a few market segments for Japanese planes. There are the user tools, which I am assuming is the kind of Japanese plane you are looking for. These sometimes have a low starting bid, but often will have starting bids around $100-150.

There is also a collector market. These are the planes that can go for several hundred dollars, and as high as four figures. We can ignore these.

In the end, what's a good price for a Japanese plane? That depends on a lot of factors, but an article by Ted Chase for Fine Woodworking magazine in the January/February 1980 issue suggested that $250 was a good price for a new Japanese plane. Adjusting for inflation, that's about $875 today.

One more data point — earlier this month I bid on a Japanese plane that looked like it was in “almost new” condition. I usually use a sniper program for eBay, so I don’t have to set time aside to watch the end of the auction, and to avoid auction fever. I set my snipe bid at $110, and lost it to a higher bidder.

2. Everything is rare, nothing is rare

A lot of eBay auctions describe a Japanese plane as rare. I suppose that could be true, as since these are blacksmith-made products, they are all one-of-a-kind. But from our perspective, we're just looking to get a decent Japanese plane, and there are a ton of them out there.

As a corollary, there's often an astonishing lack of information. I've seen multiple listings for collector-type Japanese planes where the description reads, "Used." That's it. This is okay, because pictures are where it's really at.

3. Photos are key

I've learned the hard way that if an eBay auction doesn't include a photo, odds are high that the seller doesn't want you to see something. Here are some photos I took of one of my planes to show what I would want to look at in an eBay auction for a Japanese plane.

The most obvious and most common photo would be an overall photo of the plane.

I'd also like to see a photo of the underside. The main thing to focus on is how tight the mouth is, and whether that suits your purposes. The mouth doesn't have to be super tight, depending on what you plan to do with the plane. When I bought the Japanese plane that I use as a jack plane from eBay, one of the things I was looking for was a relatively wide mouth, since I knew I would be taking thicker shavings with it.

I'd like to see the hollow side of the plane blade to get an idea of it's condition, and how much of the hard steel is left.

A picture of the bevel will tell you how good the lamination is, and how thin the hard steel layer is. In general, thinner and more even is better.

Finally, I like to get a look at the end of the plane, just to make sure that the dai is rift sawn, as seen here, or flat sawn. This is to make sure that the dai has a good grain orientation. This is usually not an issue, so if this picture isn't available, it's not a deal-breaker for me.

4. Get over not having free shipping

Any Japanese plane on eBay will almost always be coming from Japan. Shipping is typically $25 or so, and the planes I've ordered typically have gotten to my house in a week or so. This is a bargain. If Amazon Prime has got you hooked on free shipping (not sure if this is really the case, as you pay $139 annually for free shipping), consider the price of a plane ticket to Japan these days.

5. Size matters

Since we're looking at used Japanese planes, these planes will be in various states of newness. You can figure out how used a Japanese plane is by knowing how big a Japanese plane blade is when it's new.

In my experience, a new Japanese plane blade is about 110-120 mm from the top of the blade to the cutting edge, and the hard steel part is about 60 mm long from the cutting edge to where it meets the soft layer of steel. The dai is typically 280-290 mm long.

Sometimes the seller will include a ruler so you can see measurements. Other times you can extrapolate from the width of the blade. Not all auctions give you all the measurements, but if there's any measurement that's available, it's the width of the plane blade. If you have that, you can figure out the others.

One other thing about sizes. The standard Japanese plane has a blade that is 70 mm wide. What that means is that a 65 mm Japanese plane often is less expensive because it isn't "full size". From my experience, a 65 mm Japanese plane is still a terrific plane to have. The plane I use most often is a 65 mm.

6. Condition matters, too

If you look at eBay long enough, you’ll find that there are Japanese planes that are real beaters, with cracks in the dai, obvious fixes to dai damage, and sometimes a bolt that’s been installed to keep cracks from getting worse. There are also planes that look nearly perfect. The price should reflect the condition of the plane. Having said that, you don’t need a near-mint plane if you plan to use it for rougher work, and a dai can be fixed so that the mouth is tight, cracks are addressed. This is the Japanese plane equivalent of buying a rusty Stanley and rehabbing it vs. looking for a NOS pre-war Stanley in the original box.

13.) Pewabic Pottery

Pewabic Pottery in Detroit was founded in 1903 by Mary Chase Perry Stratton. Her ceramics were nationally renowned, landing her a spot in the Michigan’s Women Hall of Fame. Mary went on to win several awards and established the ceramics department at the University of Michigan. The touch she had on Michigan and the arts and crafts community will always be remembered. The shop is still operating to this day and is now a National Historic Landmark.

I don’t care what the category is I just want to know what the best one is that way I know that it converts the most and it has the most chance of getting sales right so all I’m gonna do is leave this blank and I’m going to click on search and what’s going to happen is it’s going to pop up and now what you see here are some of the tops offers on Clickbank so for example right now the top offer on Clickbank is we fix flat belly fix is a great offer to promote.

I’ve done very very well for it with it you know I know the owner taught very well but we’ve done over like I said the vast majority of my revenue has come from flat belly fix this year it’s just converting and does well and the reason why it does so well guys is that it’s in one of the big three niches now the big three niches are of course health wealth and relationships.

Their pages you can use let’s say for example look at this let’s just pull up this landing page here so if I click on this page it’s gonna open up and now you have that landing page ok that landing page is already done and it already has your links on there okay that’s the great thing about this offer and promoting on Clickbank, so I can literally take this link and I can go on Facebook and I can start promoting it today.

And if I were to promote this offer I would target to done do-it-yourself people survivor or survival people Preppers I would target conservative people all right now would really gear it toward just towards guys right and guys 40-plus all right because that’s you know I’ve run this offer quite a bit and it works really well and it’s geared towards men 40-plus okay some women buy it but for the vast majority of people it’s going to be men.

So you can see here guys they have everything blog articles they have all kinds of stuff for you to use and that’s the great thing about this they even give you images right so if you’re running an ad on Facebook you can just literally write and use these images so these images here right look at this guy’s black they got the Facebook Ads for you.

Now the other crazy thing guys are as they scroll down here I want to see if they still have it on here yeah look at this they have demographics right so you can see ages 45 and up are the highest converting you can see the number of countries that are highest converting.

There’s so much on here guys, okay and this is why it’s you know honestly and truly I think affiliate marketing is so good especially if you have a high converting offer like this one for example easy battery and you have because they give you all the resources they literally give you everything you need on a silver platter to make money with this offer.

And honestly and truly I’ve run this offer quite a bit I’ve had a couple ten thousand dollar days with this offer it does well guys so just keep that in mind and this is the way I love to advertise on Clickbank with Clickbank offers on Facebook because if you can find that winning combination of an offer that converts alright, and you’re able to it’s a big niche, okay, for example, the done I do it yourself survival niche is huge okay it’s not as big as health or wealth or relationship but it’s still a really big niche you can do really well with this okay so dig through these guys.

What I would recommend is on the marketplace make sure you know once again let me go back here make sure you’re going and checking out the top converting offers, okay reaching out to the affiliates seeing what they have for resources for universities as a vendor and their resources for you and then going from there guys so really that’s how simple it is and that’s how you can get to that level of making thousands of dollars a day or in my case millions of dollars a year with Clickbank.

That’s just one angle guys there are so many other ways you can go and that’s something that I kind of teach in my commission hearing program as we go over all the different angles different offers to choose there’s a lot you can do guys so hopefully that makes sense but yeah get excited if you’re not excited about something like this then you’re crazy because promoting other people’s offers we’re gonna have to worry about having an email list or customer service or anything like that.

okay because apparently i’ve put more thought into this than even i thought i had, here’s my take on a Harvest Moon au, and y’all know this is gonna be a klance one - literally half (if not more) of this au is based off a romance option in More Friends of Mineral Town

okay so i’m basing this au (pretty loosely honestly) off my personal favorite harvest moon game (b/c it’s actually the only one i ever played lmao): Friends of Mineral Town/More Friends of Mineral Town, and if anyone actually ends up reading this and wants to know more of a summary about the game itself to understand what’s happening in this au then i’ll happily get into that -- but for now while i’m assuming that i’m just talking to myself, 

Firstly, Lance impulse-buying a farm for this au is honestly so Relatable 

Secondly, listen in the game there’s this guy named Cliff who recently moved to town too and he doesn’t have any family and he’s really quiet and kind of a loner and you have to befriend him within the first year of the game or else he literally leaves town forever -- and i can’t remember everything but i’m pretty sure of all the romance options for dudes he’s the one that loves nature the most and i just - does this all not just scream Keith????? 

plus the pastor of the church in the game asks you to make friends with this guy because he has a hard time making friends himself and with a mentor figure like that how can you nOT immediately be inspired to throw a little broganes in the mix here, but okay messing around with storylines to make it 100000 times more applicable to the Lumberjack Keith Living in the Mountains aesthetic that i want: 

Shiro’s a military veteran that moved to this tiny town and built himself a little cottage in the mountains for optimal Rest and Relaxation

he serves as the lumberjack in the town, operating his woodworking business from his mountain cottage

Shiro’s cousin Keith moves in with him for Unknown Reasons not too long before Lance moves to town

Keith helps Shiro with his orders to build/carve stuff for the other townspeople

he’s super closed-off and has no idea how to handle social situations but he Tries

he probably comes off a little rude at first but once the townspeople learn (probably either from Shiro or firsthand experience) that he’s really just an awkward sweetheart they quickly warm up to him

not that this makes Keith any less awkward around people but it does earn the townspeople the occasional grateful smile when they respond to his lack of people-skills with kindness 

Lance and Keith actually don’t meet for a while after Lance buys the farm actually 

Before Lance can even think about having animals on his land he’s got to weed-eat the heck out of the place, and that’s putting it lightly because damn this place hasn’t seen any sort of care for y e a r s at this point and calling it “overgrown” is the understatement of the year -- but basically this doesn’t really require any woodworking yet

plus Keith doesn’t really ever go into town unless it’s for a job, so between Lance spending most of his time wrasslin’ with mother nature and Keith basically refusing to leave the mountains they’re constantly missing each other

they hear of the other’s existence sure, but it’s basically one of those ‘everyone knows this person and talks about them but i haven’t seen them even oNCE and i’m not entirely convinced this isn’t just a giant prank’ situations 

Lance is the new talk of the town what with him being the first person to buy the farm and then actually stick around in  a g e s, but Keith always takes the path to and from town that’s on the other side of a hill from the farm, and basically never really gets a chance to #confirm this gossip  

Everyone tells Lance that if he needs any repairs done or when he wants to fix up the barn & animal pens then he should go talk to Shiro and Keith

Lance has actually met Shiro a couple times now (who has also confirmed the existence of this Keith person) but somehow Keith becomes like the one person in the entire town that Lance has yet to meet

Eventually this is resolved after a pretty gnarly storm rolls through and leaves Lance’s roof with at least five different leaks and Lance has to go to Shiro for help

Keith is actually out when Lance pays the little mountain cottage a visit (Lance seriously doubts the guy’s existence at this point)

There are more storms coming soon and Shiro suggests getting the leaks repaired early the next day, to which Lance agrees, entirely forgetting that “early” in this town actually means “the asscrack of dawn” until Shiro shakes his hand with a comment of “Great, I’ll see you at 6 in the morning then.” and by then he’s already agreed he can’t just back out

Which means that the next day he’s scrambling to make himself look somewhat presentable when he wakes up to a knock on his door (sleeping right through the five alarms he’d set for himself) and flings open the door to greet Shiro- only it’s not Shiro

It takes an embarrassingly long time for Lance’s brain to start working again and when it does of course the first thing out of his mouth is about as eloquent as he feels, “You’re not Shiro.”

Lance isn’t entirely sure how to read the other guy’s face, he can’t tell if he’s pissed off from his comment or incredulous at Lance’s incredible powers of observation- “Congratulations, you have eyes.” - okay maybe a bit of both but really though who has that level of wit this early in the morning?? that should be illegal 

“I’m Keith. I’m here to fix your roof.” - and this is how Lance learns that the Mythical Keith is actually Real

Basically it’s not the best meeting and Lance is kinda put off that he got dragged so hard before his brain was even functioning properly for the day

Plus it’s like whatever circumstances had kept them from meeting in the first place are just gone now because he starts seeing Keith everywhere

Okay goin’ into lightning round here b/c this is already 10 years longer than I was expecting and i still need to write a short paper due tomorrow

Basically Lance starts getting more of the buildings on his land fixed up, which requires Keith (and sometimes Shiro) to be there

(You KNOW Shiro has Keith go help Lance instead of being there himself because he knows Lance and Keith are about the same age and this is a great opportunity for Keith to make a friend)

Keith gets to witness Lance still trying to get used to early morning wake-up times, and while initially it was kind of frustrating as they come to know each other a bit better it becomes Endlessly Amusing

They wind up developing this snarky banter with each other because of it, and even though they’re under the pretense of dragging each other eventually one of them will say something that gets them both laughing

Basically they wind up having a lot more fun than either of them expects to, and this of course do not go unnoticed by the town and probably leads to a lot of comments on it as the nosy neighbors (read: Hunk) try to get them good good deets on the situation

Now while I am making it all sound like fun and games here (which it certainly is, this au has gotta be just as feel-good and chill as the game is), Keith is definitely still mostly quiet and removed from everyone 

Lance probably finds him in the mountains by himself a lot when Lance goes up there to forage or mine

At the end of the day I want it to be this super chill and kind of wistful and feelgood au where Lance slowly learns about this mysterious boy with a mysterious and sad past that lives in the mountains with his cousin

and Lance comes to be a real source of happiness and friendship and support for Keith, which leads to Keith opening up more to the townspeople and making even more friends (Pidge, Hunk, Allura, Coran -- which I already have some ideas for them but I’ll get to that Later)

and Keith kind of unintentionally helps Lance figure out who he is as a person (something Lance felt like he lost while living in the city)

and man i just want a soft good story about two boys helping each other figure out their place in the world and what it means to belong somewhere, but Harvest Moon edition
