hi everyone! i’ve put together a survey about how being on tumblr has shaped people’s political beliefs, especially around leftist ideas.

if you’ve ever used tumblr (past or present) and you identify as leftist in some way, this survey is for you. the survey is anonymous, takes about 10–15 minutes, and asks about your time on tumblr, how it influenced your politics, and your general experiences with tumblr culture. i’d love to hear your perspective.

One idiot with a sword and an asymmetrical smile...

Throwback Thursday to the first iteration of the Gideon cosplay stuff, and the first time I wore proper cosplay in public. Well, intentionally, at least.

I did not have a lot of time for some of the last details, as I was on a long trip until the week before the event, but thanks to my wardrobe and various boxes doing their thing, and the fantastic help from a partner, I managed to get enough stuff done in time (see, for example, the knuckle knives, which were made in scant hours but looked fantastic). AND I damn well remembered to get a shot with the glasses down!

Gideon the Ninth: Meee!

Fun anecdote: I did that makeup by a pro cosplayer's recipe for body paint. That's two layers of makeup, Kryolan setting spray, powder, foundation etc, and it almost held out enough to make me say "fuckit I'll get the rest tomorrow" and sacrifice a pillowcase.

...I have to say I need to fan myself a little because that stare and that smirk, why yes I do fancy Gideon Nav quite a bit.

Me and Darkesttears intercepted the excellent photographer Robert Johannesson as he was on his way to something rather more important, and we got a couple of nice photos from it!

This is a photo where you can see a decent amount of my costume. I scoured the first book to find all references to Gideon's clothes, and got details about a lot of the other Ninth Housers' outfits incidentally.

So here we therefore see:

A shirt, not large enough to be in the way but large enough to billow out in, say, pool water; also it has a neat detail at the collar, and that in turn allowed me to notice that the Ortus cosplayer we found later had the same shirt in a larger size which is just... such a fantastic coincidence, as an unspecified amount of Gideon's clothes were remade from his. Sleeves rolled up as high as they would go, because come on it's Gideon gotta show off them guns.

Trousers, I chose the fairly loose ones made from linen because it was rather hot. But the fit of them also seems to fit the descriptions.

Tall boots. I love those boots. They are proper late 1990's goth boots, lace up, no damn zipper. Aaaand they are a tiny tiny bit too small over the joint of my fifth left metatarsal and phalange ;n; Worth it for that day, but... I'll have to find another pair.

Leather belt that is a broad piece with two belts threaded through it. The sheath/holder for the (according to the book, unornamented) "rapier" (it's a boffer sword from Calimacil I think) fits the lower of those two belts perfectly!

Cloak/robe with hood, again devoid of ornaments, reaching to the ankles (because I want to be able to walk in them in stairs), made from discarded mofuku kimono. The descriptions are scarce. Is it one robe, or layered robes? There should be at least one pocket though, and that's a future project.

Gloves with knuckle knives. I really love them. Thrifted gloves that have the look of (HEMA) fencing gloves about them, insides torn out, a bit of creative liberty with two metal details, and more-or-less obsidian-looking knuckle knives made from worbla. (All the research I did on knuckle knives...! The definition of what they are is rather... unspecific.)

Pilot glasses, thankfully of a sort that removes hard sun reflections and such. That means I could actually go around all day in the sun.

Also the ridiculous red hair, post perfect styling but before it going complete "I do what I want!"-mode.

Not seen is the bandeau, which I've interpreted to be a bandeau bra (because it's under the shirt), where Gideon stores the keys later in the book.

I love, love cosplaying Gideon... Especially together with my Harrowhark!

I have always had very long hair, so I'm not versed in cutting or styling it short. But this one will get added hair (lace base!) and a better cut, because honestly.

Harp-Ell in St Clemen's ruin, Visby

(I promise I'll not post too much of my own artsing and music stuff on this blog, but I will do occasionally, because it's my blog, even though it's mainly a place for my obsessions like The Locked Tomb.)

Medieval Week on Gotland is my favourite week of the year. All the other 51, I long to go there. I don't know how many years I have gone, it's well over thirty, I don't know when my first one was.

Let me tell the story in brief, of how I got from there, to being a solo performer in the programme...

I began as an owl-eyed child growing up on Gotland, wanting to do more than the market on one or the other Sunday (it runs for eight days). I knew there was more, I tried my best to somehow join in more than as a modern visitor. I finally got to make and wear a simple white kirtle around age 12 or so, and go to a workshop in singing, on my own.

I took up longbow archery, and joined the official activities as part of Gutars Bågskyttar. But 14th C dress didn't interest me, at least not the sacky things popular in reenacting then. And so, in 2001, I believe, I bought my very first pearl, starting the journey to a fully fledged early 10th C Gotlandic women's outfit. I was decently happy with it around twelve years later. I still update it every year, with a pearl, a silver ring, a new fabric or suchlike.

In 2008 I learned about the wirestrung old Gaelic harp. My placeholder harp and I did a guest starring in a friend's performance.

2017 I received my first own wirestrung, and set about making a 14th C male outfit to go with it. I brought it to Medieval Week, finding new people to hang out with, and make music. Another way of "doing Medieval Week" had opened up (there are many). I got to know people I still meet up with for this purpose, every year.

Although, 2020 taught me there's no such thing as certainty of "every year", but I joined via watching the 8-day stream, as did so many others.

2021 was small and cautious, but it's when I took to the stage for the first time as a solo artist. I had over 20 in the audience, and I was so, so happy. The storyteller friend and I click stupid well on stage and by now I've accompanied him many times over the years.

Now, I have returning audience members, there's fanart (!!!), and I really enjoy spreading the knowledge and music of the old wirestrung Gaelic harp, especially since the original to the Queen Mary replica I am now caretaker of, is dendrochronologically dated to 1325~1350. Perfect, as Medieval Week is centred around the invasion of 1361.

And next year I'll be the Tristan to Saga Björling's (Starur) Isolde, with Berättaren as king Mark. *cue incoherent and incredulous babbling*

It is ON! I absolutely observe the Glorious 25th and Towel Day and Tally Mark Day, and now, there shall be Soup Day.

Soup Day: a proposal for a TLT fandom holiday

Because Mean Girls wear pink on October 3rd. Star Wars celebrates May the 4th. Hitchhikers and Discworld fans don towels and lilacs (respectively) on May 25th.

Locked Tomb friends, we need a holiday.

I propose that 9/9 of every year is Soup Day. We celebrate, of course, by consuming soups. We share photos, recipes, and if you have a group of irl bone bitches, the soup itself.

If you can’t eat soup, put bread in a drawer. If you can’t eat bread, stare in anguish at a cup of lukewarm tea while contemplating the ways your God has disappointed you. Use your own moral judgment on whether you consume cow products on that day, as cows do exhibit mourning behavior.

Anyways that’s my plan for dinner on September 9th and you’re all invited! 🖤🖤🖤 I’m telling everyone nice and early so you can start hoarding bones. For stock, of course.

A closeup of my simple Ninth House rosary, because I've carried it around today, on the off chance that someone might recognise it. Especially during the larper's picnic (every Medieval Week, Thursday 13:00, outside Jungfrutornet, Visby), since I made it for "One Dance, One End" larp last October, where I played Deidamia Nova, Cavalier Primary to Gorehark Novarius, Reverend Daughter of Drearburh and the Ninth House.

(The larp is set 500 years before the books' present, check the details out, they're online, and it was Swedified with less gamified rules and things, but it's been run a few times in the USA too.)

Many of the things made for Deidamia can be used as Gideon too, but, the rosary... mmmaybe not. The other rosary was made by Gorehark's player, the boney necklace and everything else made or modified/decorated by me. The fountain pen is by Shibui North, called Creepy Little Skulls <3 The amount of bone beads is divisible by nine, altogether, and wherever found (except for when in threes).

... and yes, I carried around bones (swan and sheep, found and received) for my necromancer.

...and the hip bag is one I use in everyday life. Because, Ninth.

Harrowhark rose to the occasion like an evening star. “The Ninth House will represent the Sixth House,” she said, sounding cold and bored, as though this had been her plan all along.

On the way to the car, just as the con was ending, I decided to be brave, risk annoying everyone that just wanted to leave, and asked for nighttime photos...

And I like how they came out, very much ;u; Gideon all eager to go, backed up by her crepuscular queen <3

Harrowhark sandwich for Gideon!

On the left is @mothelectrified who was pretty damn amazing and fantastic. First, making sure I actually ate my food. Second, being great company while I did. Third, insisting on taking photos of me and Darkesttears' Harrow (right), and directing us really really well! I wish I'd asked for solo photos too but I was a little shy after all that awesome.

I don't have a photo where all three Harrows were gathered, but I hope there will turn up some, from someone else!

Death first to vultures and scavengers.

Ssso, me and "my" Harrow were resting for a bit during NärCon Summer 2025, I'd taken off my boots and had my back to the Main Street, when aforementioned Harrow said she saw another Harrow walk past. I nearly cracked my neck with the speed of turning around to look, saw said Harrow, bellowed "Harrow!" and began running. Barefoot of course.

Gideon never ran unless she had to, and Gideon ran now.

After a few futile attempts (because crowds) @ancient-bloodslut and their companions noticed me as I said "Reverend Daughter, my crepuscular queen" and went down on one knee. There was much squeeing and I dragged her (Harrow) off to get photos. The robe was SO senescent and had an embroidered Ninth House skull at the neck! Her crown was made of teeth! The black in the makeup was so crisp!

First, we were very Harrow and Gideon.

There was some arguing, naturally.

And some Ninth House-ness. Dark cryptique!

Wish I had some sort of photo manipulation 1. program and more importantly 2. skills, but I do not, at least nothing on the computer, or I would have blurred the backgrounds a bit.

...aaaah I was so delighted! And soon after, another Gideon was noticed in the wild... and so on, leading to a group of us. Much delight, such joy, very squee!

I bet Gideon Nav would have found Hazbin Hotel quite funny. Lots of swearing, a few hot chicks, bit of family drama. Not enough swords though, obviously.

I sure as hell squee'd at seeing my friend @theswedishmupp (she's only really active on Instagram though, @/muppycosplay) cosplay Sir Pentious with four chaotic Eggboyz!

Gideon Nav at NärCon Summer 2025

My order number was 69 RIGHT before I met Camilla and Palamedes, then I met an extra Harrow. Eventually, a lot of TLT cosplayers accidentally gathered and THERE WAS AN ORTUS!!! He had a book and all! ...and we had the exact same type of shirt. Which is just amazing on a new level, because I aimed for "book description accurate" and having to wear Ortus modified hand-me-downs is A Thing.
