this one person at work was telling me how one of her cats got pregnant and then she had like 6 kittens she needed to find homes for. and she was also telling me how another kitten was the sweetest thing and had a such a big personality and then the kitten got hit by a car and she was really sad. it took all of my willpower to not snap and go "that's why you shouldn't let your cats go outside, dumbass"

What Are the 10 Best Practices for Pet Grooming?
Tumblr media
1. Use the Proper Tools First
Using the appropriate tools is the first step in grooming. Choose brushes according on the type of coat your pet has. Pets with long hair require different brushes than those with short hair. To get rid of tangles, gently comb through their fur, beginning at the roots. To make sure your brushes are functioning properly, clean them on a regular basis.
2. Give Your Pet a Proper Bath
One essential Pet Care Tips and Trick of grooming is taking a bath. Select a shampoo for your pet based on their coat type and skin type. Human shampoos might irritate their skin, so stay away from them. It’s crucial to bathe them as needed, usually every few weeks or as your veterinarian instructs, as bathing too regularly might deplete their skin’s natural oils.
3. Regularly trim nails
Injuries and discomfort can result from overgrown nails. Every two weeks, examine your pet’s nails. It’s time for a trim if you hear clicking noises when they walk. When using clippers, exercise caution to prevent cutting the quick, which can hurt and result in bleeding. If in doubt, think about hiring a professional groomer to do the work.
4. Clean their eyes and ear
Another important aspect of pet grooming is cleaning their eyes and ears. Check for filth, wax accumulation, or illness symptoms on a regular basis. Use a vet-approved ear cleaner and soft cotton balls to wipe away any debris. For eyes, a gentle wipe with a damp cloth can remove discharge.
However, if you notice any redness, swelling, or excessive discharge, consult your pet doctor immediately.
5. Regularly Check for Fleas and Ticks
Fleas and ticks can cause serious discomfort to your pet. Regularly Pet Care Tips and Tricks your pet’s fur for these pests, especially after outdoor activities. Use flea and tick prevention products, but always follow your vet’s advice for choosing the right one. Comb your pet’s fur with a flea comb to remove any pests that might be hiding.
6. Brush Teeth for Oral Health
Just like humans, pets need dental care. Brush their teeth helps prevent tartar buildup, gum disease, and bad breath. Use a toothbrush and toothpaste designed specifically for pets. Start slow, and gradually get your pet accustomed to having their teeth brushed.
7. Coat Care and Professional Grooming
Also pets, those with thick or long coats, need to be groomed more frequently. To avoid mats and tangles, regular brushing and trimming are crucial. Think about hiring a professional groomer for pets with challenging coats. In addition to handling various coat types, groomers are qualified to offer extra services including anal gland expression, nail care, and ear cleaning.
8. Proper Grooming for Particular Breeds
Grooming requirements vary by breed. While some cats and dogs need little care, others need to be groomed more frequently. Find out the breed-specific grooming needs of your pet. For instance, Siamese and other short-haired cats are easier to groom than poodles, which require frequent haircuts.
9. Check for Skin Issues
While grooming, always check your pet’s skin for any abnormalities such as lumps, bumps, or signs of infections. Dry patches, redness, or hair loss could indicate allergies, infections, or parasites. Early detection of skin issues can help you address problems before they become more severe.
10. Stay Calm and Be Patient
Both you and your cat should enjoy the grooming process. Grooming sessions should begin when your pet is at ease. Sessions should be brief, and excellent behavior should be rewarded with praise. When working with a creature that isn’t accustomed to being groomed, patience is crucial. Your pet will eventually come to appreciate the procedure.
Conclusion
An essential Pet Care Guide for your pet is proper grooming. In addition to making them look better, regular care also helps keep health problems at bay. You can keep your pet clean, healthy, and content by adhering to these pet care tips and tricks. For guidance on particular grooming techniques that are appropriate for your pet’s breed and requirements, always seek advice from your veterinarian.

Actinomycosis in Dogs: Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment
Tumblr media
As dog owners, we always want our furry friends to be healthy and happy. Unfortunately, dogs can fall ill to a number of diseases and infections. One such condition is actinomycosis, a bacterial infection that can affect various parts of a dog’s body. In this article, Meowk9 will take a closer look at actinomycosis in dogs, including its causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment.
What is Actinomycosis in Dogs?
Actinomycosis is a bacterial infection that can affect dogs, cats, and even humans. It is caused by the bacteria Actinomyces, which is found naturally in the environment. Actinomyces bacteria usually live in soil and water, and can also be present in the mouth and digestive system of animals and humans. When a dog becomes infected with Actinomyces bacteria, the bacteria can invade different parts of the body and cause inflammation and abscesses. The most common sites of infection are the mouth, jaw, and neck, but actinomycosis can also affect the lungs, skin, and other organs.
Causes of Actinomycosis in Dogs
Dogs can become infected with Actinomyces bacteria in a number of ways. The most common cause of infection is when a dog chews on sticks or other objects that are contaminated with the bacteria. Dogs can also become infected through puncture wounds or other injuries that allow the bacteria to enter the body. Actinomyces bacteria can also infect dogs that have weakened immune systems, as well as those that have undergone surgery or have dental disease.
Symptoms of Actinomycosis in Dogs
The symptoms of actinomycosis in dogs can vary depending on the location of the infection. In general, however, the most common symptoms of actinomycosis in dogs include: - Swelling and inflammation of the affected area - Pain and tenderness when touched - Discharge or draining from the affected area - Loss of appetite - Weight loss - Fever - Lethargy and weakness If you notice any of these symptoms in your dog, it’s important to take them to the vet right away.
Diagnosis of Actinomycosis in Dogs
To diagnose actinomycosis in dogs, the vet will perform a physical exam and take a medical history. They may also take X-rays or other imaging tests to determine the location and extent of the infection. In some cases, the vet may also perform a biopsy or culture of the affected area to confirm the diagnosis.
Treatment of Actinomycosis in Dogs
When it comes to treating actinomycosis in dogs, a combination of antibiotics and surgery is often necessary. Antibiotics work to eliminate the bacteria and prevent the infection from spreading, while surgery may be needed to remove any abscesses or infected tissue that cannot be treated with antibiotics alone. The specific type and duration of antibiotic treatment will depend on the severity and location of the infection. It's essential to adhere to the vet's instructions and complete the full course of antibiotics, even if your dog seems to be recovering. Treatment usually lasts for several weeks to a few months.
Preventing Actinomycosis in Dogs
Preventing actinomycosis in dogs can be challenging, but there are a few steps you can take to reduce the risk of infection. One of the most important things you can do is to keep your dog away from objects that may be contaminated with Actinomyces bacteria, such as sticks and other debris. You should also make sure your dog receives regular veterinary care, including dental cleanings and checkups. A healthy immune system can help prevent infections from taking hold.
Complications of Actinomycosis in Dogs
If left untreated, actinomycosis in dogs can lead to serious complications, including the spread of the infection to other parts of the body, and the formation of large, painful abscesses. In severe cases, the infection can also affect vital organs such as the heart and lungs, which can be life-threatening.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the most common way dogs get actinomycosis?Dogs can become infected with Actinomyces bacteria by chewing on sticks or other objects that are contaminated with the bacteria. Can humans get actinomycosis from their dogs?Yes, humans can contract actinomycosis from their dogs, although it is rare.Is actinomycosis fatal in dogs?Actinomycosis can be fatal in dogs if left untreated or if it spreads to vital organs. Can actinomycosis be prevented with vaccinations? There is currently no vaccine available for actinomycosis in dogs. Can actinomycosis be treated with natural remedies? There is no evidence to suggest that natural remedies are effective in treating actinomycosis in dogs. It’s important to seek veterinary care for any suspected infections.
Conclusion
Actinomycosis is a serious bacterial infection that can affect dogs, causing inflammation and abscesses in various parts of the body. It’s important to seek veterinary care right away if you suspect your dog may have actinomycosis. With prompt diagnosis and treatment, most dogs will make a full recovery from actinomycosis. By taking steps to prevent infection and maintaining regular veterinary care, you can help keep your furry friend healthy and happy. Read the full article

I'm actually not mad at OP for asking for a dose, and also no, the antibiotic she was asking about is OTC. I mean, she should see a vet, absolutely, but the problem with vets for peafowl is not expense, but availability. I'm surrounded by vets that see avians. There are at least 10 clinics within an hour of me that see birds.
There are two that will take peafowl at all, and only one of them actually knows what they're doing, and that one is at the very edge of an hour from me, located in another state. They didn't used to see very many peafowl, and the only reason they see peafowl regularly now is because I started bringing my birds when they were healthy for wellness checks to get the vets used to seeing them when they're okay, and I started referring anyone within my area that owns peafowl to go to that clinic. When you cannot find what you need, sometimes you have to make it.
However, even though I have two clinics that will technically see peafowl, one is mainly for dogs and cats, and only one of the multiple vets at that clinic will see the peafowl, and he's been weeks out in advance. The other clinic has two vets and both will see peafowl, but one is brand new and still learning and the whole clinic is booked weeks out. If I needed to see a vet immediately, they MIGHT be able to squeeze me in at some random time and because I've been going to them for years they might be willing to see me "after hours" at close IF it's a bird they've seen previously. More often, I have to make a first available appt, hope someone cancels earlier than that, and deal with my bird alone with whatever I can get OTC.
HOWEVER. a) due to working with my vet for years, and my own general science and animal injury/illness care experience, most of the time I have a pretty good idea of what I need to do and b) if I don't, because I have built rep with my vet and am considered competent, sometimes I can get away with emailing/calling and asking for advice rather than having to bring the bird in.
So, I'm not mad at the person asking for advice, because I don't know her situation. I don't know if she can get to a vet or not, or if this is the first incident and she hasn't had time, or if she's waiting for a vet or what (and I do know vets won't give you dose info, at least around here, unless they've seen the bird before ever at LEAST and sometimes not even then which is reasonable on their end).
What I AM mad about is the guy that's been "doing it that way for years" having done it that way for YEARS without taking birds in to a vet to get properly assessed and given the right dose info, and telling others that that's "not a problem." yes it is!! it's a problem!!! if you keep having to repeatedly treat your birds for respiratory infections, a) you're not treating the RIs properly clearly, and b) you aren't providing an environment that helps them avoid getting respiratory infections in the first place! RIs in peafowl might be something like mycoplasma or wet pox, but more often it's the result of poor living conditions, esp overly-dusty conditions from unclean coops, coops with the wrong substrate, people using diatomaceous earth, or flight pens that aren't big enough so the birds turn them into raw soil instead of grass. Bird dander or other dusts/particulates get trapped in the bird's sinuses and cause infection when they can't clear them. If left untreated, URIs can turn into lung and air sac infections, pneumonia, etc and kill the bird.
A one-off respiratory infection could be a fluke; they shove their faces into dust baths and sometimes get stuff in their nares, shit happens. If that's repeatedly happening for years, the birds are almost certainly lacking in some element of care or their environment needs to be cared for differently.
Lady on FB: What's the dose for X med for peafowl?
Guy on FB: 3ml for 3 days
Me: That's a huge overdose
Guy: been doing it for years with no problems
Me: the fact you have had to do it for years suggests there may be a problem
I continue to be tired

Is your cat depressed?
Is your cat depressed?
Tumblr media
Can cats get depressed? Absolutely. Just like humans, cats can suffer from depression and for many of the same reasons: moving, changes in routine, boredom, excessive fighting by household members, and loss of another household pet or human. The most common cause of depression in cats is the loss of a companion. Depression in cats, however, can be less noticeable because they already are relatively subdued and sleep a lot. The primarily red flags are changes in normal behavior. Cat depression signs According to a feline experts including the Humane Society, the key signs of cat depression include: Hiding or avoiding humans & other pets Lack of grooming Lethargy Lack of appetite & weight loss Sleeping more than usual Aggressiveness Fearfulness Loss of interest in play Clinginess & neediness Vocalizing with low-pitched, mournful yowls Missing the litter box Excessive scratching Of course all of the above symptoms can also be signs of illness and even injury, so if they persist, especially the lack of interest in food, consult your vet. Remember, cats are very good at hiding that they are not feeling well, so by the time you notice that your cat is not acting like it usually does, something is often really wrong. But do not overly worry. If your cat is depressed there are solutions. Cat depression treatment If the depression seems likely triggered by moving and/or changes in routine (for example a new baby in the house) the best antidote may be simply spending more doting time with your cat and creating one or more safe places for your cat to retreat. If the depression is triggered by the loss of a fellow pet or human companion, the advice above applies, plus you may want to consider getting a new companion for the pet if possible. Although, the addition of a new pet should be weighed carefully as some cats will find the new family member adds to their stress. If your cat is depressed, because she is bored – which does often happen to indoor-only cats – then it is up to you to relieve that boredom. Bring the outdoors inside so that your cat can express his or her natural instincts for climbing, scratching, stalking and pouncing. Cats who do not have spaces to exhibit these natural behaviors will often find destructive ways to express themselves and/or slip into a depression. The Daily Cat Blog has a great list of suggestions for bringing the outdoors inside, such as having pots of oat grass available for kitty nibbling. Essentially, for the indoor-only cat, environmental enrichment is a basic need like food and water. Should you put your cat on an anti-depressant? Under all of the above circumstances, you may find a feline pheromone product called Feliway to be helpful for calming cats. Another great remedy that I find useful with both cats and dogs is Dr. Bach’s Rescue Remedy for Pets. If these simple measure do not work and your cat has been diagnosed by a vet with depression, he may be prescribed antidepressants. Hopefully your beloved feline is content and depression is not a worry; keeping these guidelines in mind is still valuable either way. When we take ownership of an animal — even one as domesticated as the cat — we owe it to them to make sure their environments are as enriching and stimulating as possible.

How To Determine If Your Pet Has a Medical Emergency
We love our pets and consider them a part of our family. Like any family member, it can be concerning when our pets become sick or injured. Determining whether your pet's illness or injury is a medical emergency, in need of a trip to the animal hospital can be challenging to decide. Understanding your pet's ailment or illness, as well as any preexisting conditions, can help you make an informed decision when it comes to your pet's health.
Duration
If your pet is sick, it can be heart-wrenching not being able to help. Determining when to take your pet to the animal hospital for an illness, like vomiting or diarrhea, can be tricky. One of the first factors to consider before taking your pet to the emergency animal hospital is the length of time your pet has been suffering from this ailment. Having a 24 hour or 48-hour illness or stomach bug can be expected for cats and dogs. If symptoms persist for longer than two days, you may want to take your pet to the animal hospital. Your pet may need medication, rehydration, or an examination to determine if there is an underlying cause.
Underlying Conditions
Sometimes, as our pets age, they develop certain conditions and ailments. While many of these ailments are benign, certain ongoing illnesses can be a reason for concern. If your dog has underlying organ issues, like heart disease, kidney disease, lung disease, or liver disease, and has recently developed an illness, a trip to an animal hospital might be in order. Further, diseases like diabetes and FIV in cats can make even uncomplicated infections and the flu dangerous. While a healthy cat or dog may recover on its own, an animal with a compromised immune system may need additional medication to get better.
Lethargy
Pets can be great at masking their pain and symptoms, and sometimes it can be hard to tell just how much your pet is suffering. Ongoing lethargy can be a troubling sign and a reason to take your pet to an animal hospital. Lethargy, when coupled with other symptoms, is a reason for concern. If your cat or dog is refusing to move, sleeping for long hours every day, or not eating and drinking, a trip to the emergency vet is in order.
Tumblr media
Mobility Concerns
When it comes to injury, pets can heal amazingly quickly. But, sometimes, injuries require professional medical attention. If your pet has a simple limp and is reluctant to put weight on a limb, your pet may be able to recover on its own. Watch your pet and see if the condition improves in 48 hours. If your pet has injured a limb and is not putting weight on the limb or dragging the limb, it is time for a trip to the emergency vet.
Bleeding
Injuries are painful and difficult to manage in your pet, and a cut or scrape is no different. Pets can get injured, and accidents happen, but trying to determine when to go to the animal hospital for a pet care can be difficult. If your pet is bleeding and cannot control the blood, seek emergency care immediately. To stop the blood, apply pressure with a gauze or a compress. If your pet is bleeding due to a dog bite or animal bite, go to the animal hospital for further evaluation. Cuts and bites to the thorax and abdomen region should also be treated at an animal hospital to ensure the wound is cleaned, examined, and stitched together correctly.

Stress affects our dogs and cats and various type pets across the board. Pet stress just like people stress causes health problems, decreases the quality of life, causes depression, and shortens life span. For these reasons, amongst others, it is necessary for pet owners to practice another part of pet wellness which is finding out if their pet is stressed, identifying the stress factors, and using the necessary techniques to eliminate the stress and increase the quality of their pet's life.
Tumblr media
Pet Stress Signs
Many pet stress signs can also be signs of other problems so do not just assume it is stress. It's important to look into all the avenues in order to efficiently help your pet and save yourself and your pet future health problems and chunky vet bills.
1. Itching
Itching is a sign of several things such as fleas, ticks, lice, or skin allergy but it can also be a sign of stress if your dog or cat is itching himself more than normal. Eliminate the possibility of fleas, ticks, lice and allergy first, and then consider that it could be your pet is stressed. Natural health care for pets treatments offers effective allergy itching remedies that can be administered at home. Treating itching and discomfort from allergies and eliminating the allergy source will also keep your pet from suffering from stressed caused by discomfort - from ongoing itchiness.
2. Excessive shedding
The more pet stress there is the more shedding there will be. Shedding however is also common with poor quality dog food, poor diet, and can also be genetics, as well as a dog that is not getting enough sun light. Another condition of excessive shedding is when the pores of the dog's skin do not close all the way allowing hair to fall constantly. This usually requires a vitamin such as Biotin to help. Or, your pet could be too stressed out.
3. Lethargy
A lethargic pet is always a sign that something is not right and needs to be looked into urgently. Lethargy can stem from depression, poor health, not enough exercise and unhappiness. Or, your pet's stress is on fire. Usually a vet will request a stool sample in order to get to the root of this problem.
4. Aggression
A sick, injured or pet in pain may be aggressive if approached or stroked, outside of this your pets aggression could be stress related.
5. Lack of or no appetite
Pets that are stressed, sick, or depressed will often eat less or lose their appetite all together. This is another area, obviously that needs to be immediately addressed if noticed by pet owners.
6. Lack of interest
A dog or cat that suddenly shows lack of interest in things he was always excited to do or enjoyed doing is a sign of a sick, sad, or depressed pet. Check for sickness first then consider stress as a reason.
7. Passive behavior
The opposite of aggression, some pets will become passive when stressed.
8. Negative behavior
Often pets who are bored will dig, chew, or bark constantly. A stressed or sad dog will be destructive, this is also a common behavior of intelligent breeds who are not left alone for long periods of time or not exercised physically and mentally enough for their breed.
9. Change is bathroom habits
A dog that is house trained or a cat that is litter box trained who suddenly forgets this and goes in the house, could be stressed or sad. Consider the age of your pet and for how long he has been trained because accidents do happen and especially during the puppy stages or learning stages.
10. Sounds
Funny as it may be cats will often purr when they are stressed, sad or even dying - as opposed to a dog that will growl when unhappy or agitated.
11. Body Language
Many pets, particularly dogs and cats will have a change in body language such as slouching while they walk, hanging their head low, walking more slowly than usual, and laying down all the time. This could be a sign your dog or cat is not well, has an injury, is depressed, or experiencing pet stress.
Happy Pet Signs
1. Curious
2. Playful
3. Shows recognition of people he knows
4. Normal stools and bathroom habits that are rarely disturbed
5. Over all happy appearance and behavior
6. A healthy appetite
Just like people dogs and cats have different personalities and owners, with different lifestyles and different environments. Dogs and cats will handle their stress in different ways - some are more wound up and edgy while others go with the flow and may not be too bothered by things. When a pet owner is stressed or depressed it can affect their pets, particularly a dog or cat, as these animals are very open to the feelings, spirit, and environment of their owners. If you are stressed, anxious, or depressed, it is highly likely that your dog or cat will be as well.
But there are other factors that can cause your dog or cat pet stress.
1. Pet wellness requires pet owners to identify if their pet is stressed and take the necessary actions to improve the situation. Consider first yourself. Are you stressed more than the norm? Are you depressed, sad or feeling anxious and nervous? Remember that just like your kids, your pet will pick up on your stress and if it's having a direct hit on your behavior, state of mind, actions and personality, it is certainly affecting your pet as well.
2. If your pet is sick and is not getting better this can cause him stress and unhappiness just as it would you. So keep an eye on your pet and be sure to take action on any out of the norm situations that may arise. Do not delay because you don't know what the situation might be and it could be time sensitive, making all the difference between recovery or death. For pets that already have an illness or health issue stress can delay healing, and even cause the problem to become chronic if your pet is dealing with unrelenting stress.
3. Constant television, flashing lights, lack of visual stimuli, smoke or polluted living environments all can cause dog stress through his eyes. Consider turning off your television for some time during the day, easy lights in the evenings, toys and a stimulating, clean air environment.
4. Once again, just like with our kids the television can become a problem if not managed in the household. A constant, loud television can add stress through your dog's ears. Loud noises, other dogs constantly barking, people arguing, children screaming, sirens, video games, thunder storms and slamming doors that are consistent in a pets environment are other stresses through sound can affect your dog. Consider classical music for your dog or cat when you leave him home alone as opposed to television or the radio. Classical music is quiet, slow and relaxing and proven to be favored amongst dogs and cats. There is loads of pet music CD's available these days that have clinically proven types of music most suitable and enjoyed by dogs and cats. An antistatic cape can be used for help with dog that suffer from thunderstorm stress. Consider the noise level in your home and make changes for a calmer, quieter atmosphere if necessary.
5. Perfumes, excessive or irritating essential oils, hair spray, air fresheners, deodorants, and smoke are also stress culprits that cause anxiety or agitation through the dog's nose. For health reasons and global warming signs it is preferred that people not use air fresheners in their homes or vehicles. Instead get to the root of the odor problem and try a natural freshener such as boiling are cooking a cinnamon stick. Don't use perfumes, deodorants, hair sprays or smoke around your pet. Instead keep use of these items to one room to keep the rest of the house clean.
6. For anxiety and fear, pet owners will often consider a product called Dog Appeasing Pheromone. However, before you go that route consider Lavender aromatherapy, which has shown success in reducing stress, sadness and restlessness in dogs housed in shelters and dog pounds.
7. The mouth and digestive system of a dog also play a part in stress. A poor diet, unhealthy teeth and gums not getting enough water, or having to compete for food are all sources of pet stress. Make sure your dog is getting regular dental checkups and regular cleaning. A safe and trusted eating environment, fresh clean water daily, a balanced healthy diet
8. Temperature and climate are also sources of stress. A pet in uncomfortable, painful or isolated living conditions will have high stress levels.
9. Excessive exercise, poor training techniques, and injuries gone untreated can cause arthritis and joint disease. Poor training can also cause fear and lack of trust, all of which bring on stress. Exercise should be breed and age appropriate, fun and stimulating and moderate. Training should be age and breed appropriate and never on a hard core, cruel basis. To protect against injuries, joint disease and arthritis, ensure your dog or cat receives body-benefiting treatments such as pet massage, cold or hot heating pads and swimming in the pool if possible. Make sure your dog is comfortable with water first and that you are with him when he is taking a dip. Like a child, never leave your pet alone in or near water. Massages do not have to be expensive you can learn to do it at home, as well as many other natural health care for pets practices
In the spirit of stress awareness month remember that being a responsible and conscientious pet owner requires you put pet wellness into practice and keep abreast of any changes in your pet, just as you do yourself your children. Be aware of changes in behavior of any kind to be addressed and sourced to the root of the problem. Stress is the not the cause for all problems your pet may encounter but it should certainly never be ruled out. Give your pet the quality of life he deserves by ensuring his meals, treats, exercise, training, lifestyle, treatments and environment are healthy ones and appropriate for his breed and age. Giving your pet a wholesome pet natural diet, vegetable enhanced and free from poor quality food ingredients, unhealthy additives will maintain your pet's inner and outer beauty as well as protect him from disease. Maintain his health further by doing your level best to eliminate pet stress and enhance the length and quality of your pet's life.

Emerald Green and Darkness
hey guys! this is a commission for my dear @xpegasusuniverse, who requested a retired Eraserhead with an equally old cat, I hope you guys enjoy this! <3
Ko-Fi || Commissions
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The smell of vanilla and the warmth of the place quickly engulfed 53 year-old Shōta’s presence as soon as he entered the little house at the end of the street – Hizashi had found it by chance online and presented it to him, and while it didn’t look sketchy at all it still felt weird to just drop by someone’s house with the excuse of adopting a new pet. The ad his loud best friend had seen only spoke about a middle-aged woman who rescued kittens and nursed them back to health with the help of her quirk, much like Recovery Girl used to do all those years back then.
With grey replacing most of the black in his hair and beard, he sighed as he eyed the place with a certain glee growing inside. It wasn’t long until the petite woman came rushing from behind one of the few doors that were on sight, and quickly introduced herself as the owner of the place. She went on to talk about how she had loved Eraser Head before he retired from the hero world, something that he didn’t feel too comfortable discussing but didn’t do anything to stop either. He thanked her with a small smile. She remarked one last time that she had been beyond thankful for everything he had done, then saw all the strays that were still looking for the one person who’d give them all the love they deserved.
In all honesty, Shōta wanted to take them all home, but as they passed through a small bedroom a dark lump on top of the single bed caught his attention, causing him to stop walking and stare questionably at the breathing figure.
“Oh, that’s one we got a few weeks back,” the old lady told him gently as she noticed he wasn’t following her anymore, walking back to his side. Both their gazes on the animal, they watched as it began to stretch and he noticed there was something funny about him – he only had three legs.
“I can only guess he had an accident,” the woman continued. “We found him when his injuries were still healing. At least, I’d like to think it was an accident. He’s also missing an eye, and the doctor told us we had been lucky to find him before it could fester. Due to him being about 13 years old, they only gave him six months.”
“Can I?” asked a curious Shōta, and the lady only nodded.
“He doesn’t really get along with people… it took him so long to even trust us enough to eat what we gave him.”
Despite her words, something pulled him closer, and his hunch hadn’t been wrong.
He ended up taking the green-eyed cat with him that same day, after a bit of struggling to get him in the cage. When they got to his apartment the blob scuttled away from him as soon as the small metal door opened. Shōta then spent all the remainder of the afternoon trying to get him out from under his bed, only to sit right beside it to eat dinner, putting a plate with food next to him in hopes the cat would come out.
It took him a few days, just like the lady had told him, to get it to trust him enough to eat freely when he was around. Soon he found its company to be rather… peaceful. Even during his long walks out all he could think about was if the cat was alright or if it was hungry, if he should buy him more toys or even new kinds of food. Hizashi found his friend’s new facet quite adorable, yet was turned down whenever he requested to meet his pet, partly because Shōta knew how the cat acted around strangers and partly because he feared he’d make it deaf by accident.
As he soon came to know, taking care of a cat also meant having to take extra care of your  furniture. He didn’t get mad as the old cat learned how to use his litterbox but rather at how he seemed to do his business everywhere else for a while as well, testing Shōta’s patience. For some reason, the man believed the pet knew he was pissed off at this attitude and eventually stopped doing it, instead turning to scratching whatever he could lay his paws on. Shōta soon bought him the thickest scratching post he could find online, hoping that would end the rebellion that had left parts of his couch and coffee table completely ruined. Despite the ruined furniture, he was happy that the disabilities didn’t stop the cat from doing its own thing.
Surprise filled the old man when, one morning around three weeks after that, he woke up and felt a lump at the end of the bed right above his feet as if to keep them warm. Opening his eyes and sitting up quickly in fear that it was something bad, he saw his companion sleeping lazily over him, only opening his eye to look at him as if he was crazy and then stretching before going back to sleep. A big smile appeared on his lips and the mere sight made his heart warm up. Not really having the will to make the cat move from the bed – he lay back down and opened his phone, quickly sending a photo to the group chat with Hizashi and Nemuri to share the amazing thing he had just witnessed.
It was only when she asked about its name that he realized he hadn’t really given it much thought at all, and then spent most of that afternoon trying to come up with something that suited both the cat and him. The task proved to be harder than he had imagined, and Shōta gave up when the clock reached 7 pm. Instead he took a moment to sit on the floor with it nearby as he turned on the TV to catch up on the events that were going on in the city. It had been quite a peaceful day much to his surprise, with no real bad news to worry about when a familiar face caught his attention right before he started to channel-surf. Green curls and a gentle smile with freckle-covered cheeks were the main features that decorated the familiar face Aizawa was now watching attentively, and Deku’s imposing voice filled the room with ease.
“Oh, look at that,” he talked to the cat as if it could understand every word he said. “I know him very well. Used to be my student and was quite a troublemaker at first… much like someone I know,” he muttered with a smile on his face. A soft meow distracted him from the screen for a moment and he noticed the animal now standing right in front of the screen, looking up at Izuku like he was the only thing to focus on at the moment. “What are you doing?” he asked softly, trying to call out to him but to no avail. “Do you like Deku?” To this, the cat’s ears perked up and it looked at him with its eye open wide. Then it went back at him and meowed again. “Deku,” Aizawa repeated, but the cat didn’t move this time. “De…” he started, carefully watching the animal in front of him look back at him with a curious gaze. “Ku?” To that one syllable, its eye widened once more as it got up on its hind legs and the man had an idea pop into his mind.
After that night he ended up naming the cat Kuro, both because of its colour and because it reminded him a lot of Izuku himself – rough around the edges when he met him yet sweet and diligent on the inside. Both took their time to truly open up and let others see their true self. Just as if he knew, his pet got used to the name faster than he would’ve expected and even seemed happier when called by it. Shōta’s friends also seemed to like the nickname, laughing just a little bit when he told them the backstory but agreeing that the cat had been a troublemaker at first.
Shōta didn’t notice until the seventh month that Kuro had actually managed to surpass his assumed lifespan of only six months left and while he didn’t think much of it his heart stirred a bit in his chest as he snuggled closer to it one night, its warmth and little paws on his chest more than enough for him to be sure that everything would go more than fine. He had never paid much attention to his own way of acting or if having a pet had changed him at all and vice versa, yet all he could think about was coming back home every day to spend time with him and revel in the company as much as he could.
It was almost as if it had been fate bringing them together but Shōta would never admit to believing in such an erratic thing – he did however believe that it had been their love for each other that had managed to make the pet stay by his side almost twelve times the amount of days that had been given to it up to its seventeenth summer, making the old man very happy as they counted birthdays and holidays together and just coursed through life relying on each other for support. Not even once did Shōta remember the cat’s disabilities and in return Kuro didn’t seem to be bothered about his owner’s casual aloofness and low energy, choosing instead to keep his distance until Aizawa called out to him.
But good things always come to an end, and Aizawa Shōta knew this very well.
After almost four years of living together, it became apparent to him that there was something wrong when the cat gradually stopped grooming himself as often as he was used to witness and eventually started keeping its distance as well, choosing to sleep hidden under the coffee table or just lying on the couch, but not with him. When he noticed those symptoms he didn’t hesitate on taking him to the vet in order to prevent something worse happening to him, though the news he was given was less than encouraging. Shōta had to stop himself from crying right then and there at the vet’s office – the cat wasn’t ill but rather naturally dying due to aging and Kuro’s bright green eye was fixed on him, as if he knew what was happening in his owner’s heart.
It wasn’t as if Aizawa chose not to focus on anything else the next few days – he just couldn’t rid his mind of the worst scenarios possible, even if they felt closer than ever before. Having been through so much with his pet, he felt the need to do whatever he could to make him feel better; he tried to help him groom, eat and brought him to bed at night, but it was only when they paid another visit to the vet for a check-up that he was told there was really no use in doing so. With his hopes crushed and his heart still not ready for what would unfold sooner or later, he returned home that evening to a cloudy sky that mirrored his feelings in every way.
It all came down to a bittersweet ending when one morning, he woke up to feel the same familiar lump at the end of the bed; sitting up slowly and stretching his arms, Shōta would’ve thought it was one of those rare days when Kuro decided to sleep with him had it not been because his perception was extremely good. Reaching out, he took the frail, lifeless body on his hands and brought it close to his chest, unable to conceal the tears that came out after making sure his best friend had already gone to a better place. He felt a knot forming in his throat as he tried his best to hide his crying and bottle it up as he always did, but it was all for nothing when he realized he hadn’t had the chance to say a proper goodbye.
“I hope you’re better and happier now, I’ll try not to miss you too much,” he murmured against the cold fur, and for a moment he thought he had heard a soft meow come from somewhere close in the room which made him look up and around. With wet cheeks and a heavy heart he smiled, knowing he wasn’t truly alone still.
Thank you for everything.

Cat Aggression - Why Do Cats' Act Like This?
Cats are more aggressive than a lot of people think. They will destroy things, including your carpeting, when they get the urge to eliminate. If you know what they're going to do and why, you can take steps to prevent problems from happening.
Have you ever heard of a cat being killed by a car? Some cats actually like to wander off and drive off the road or hurt themselves by rolling them's cars. Cats will pull on the steering wheel and roll a car, because that's what they do naturally. Don't ever let your cat think that it's going to be fine if he goes off road.
They believe that because they're very clever that they can think better than you do, and it's caused by a mental imbalance. We don't want to set our cats up for failure, so we have to teach them how to do it themselves. You have to understand why they do it.
Some people call this self-preservation instinct, but that's not the whole story. It's actually something else that they believe, but it is very dangerous and can cause injuries if not taken care of. Keep your house as clean as possible, and bring your cats outside to relieve themselves, or even just make sure they're not in the house.
I'm not talking about bringing your cat inside, but taking them out to the vet. Most cats do what they need to do in order to avoid any accidents or injuries. They've been conditioned to do it, so the vet can help.
Cats that roam more tend to do it more often, and this is why cats are more aggressive towards other cats. They feel they need to do it more often to survive, because it helps them get the same amount of urine as they'd get on their own.
Taking your cat to the vet regularly will help them manage stress, and it will help prevent the accidents from happening in the first place. At the same time, you can help them improve their confidence and make them less likely to get into an accident.
Tumblr media
Accidents happen because they're not able to control themselves properly. When your cat is not feeling comfortable around you, it will take you longer to calm it down, and that's one of the reasons why it's more prone to accidents. When you're calmer around it, it won't be as likely to upset you and cause you harm.
I know, I know. You're thinking you don't have time to go to the vet every week, and you don't have a lot of money to spend on regular pet visits. The good news is that there are still ways you can improve your cat's health without spending a lot of money.
You should learn about preventative medicine. Kittens under five months old are usually not a problem, but most pets outgrow by four or five years old. A lot of illnesses start at age six or seven, so if you've been taking your cat to the vet and the problem keeps coming back, that's a red flag.
They should have had a large number of kittens, and when they finally mature, they have two times the number of urinary tract infections as kittens that only get one infection. That's why it's very important to prevent them from having an accident, even if it means they won't be getting a lot of toys or affection when they get older.Check also Cat Chew Toys
Once you have your cat on the path to success, then you'll be able to tell if your cat is more aggressive than normal. Just keep practicing prevention and you'see results, one of which will probably be fewer accidents happening.

This is a post that my best friend and I wrote to help spread awareness of the abysmal level of care that Petco gives its ferrets, and hopefully catch the attention of the corporate office.
This is the link to the original post on facebook.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dear #Petco,
I have attempted to reach out to you on multiple occasions to address my concerns regarding your ferrets and each time I have been ignored. To add insult to injury I am not the only person in the community that you have brushed off. I am now reaching out to you in a more public way because these problems are serious and need to be seen. I will be addressing several things in this post, all of which are widely known about in the ferret community, some of which are mentioned in the Petco ferret care sheet.
I want to make sure that I am clear on the fact that this is not an in-store employee problem. You have some amazing employees that are doing their absolute best to care for these animals and you have some employees that are just trying to do their jobs. These employees need your help to provide decent living conditions for these ferrets. Your policies and lack of employee education are preventing that progress. I beg you to release updated training videos that teach them how to perform basic care as well as notice injuries and illnesses. While your care sheet does include this information, your employees are not trained to actively spot these problems and make sure that prospective owners understand how to identify them as well. By better educating your employees (all of your employees) on the animals they are working with, you could improve the in-store care of your animals enormously.
As stated in the Petco ferret care sheet, ferrets are obligate carnivores. As you know, this means they cannot digest anything other than meat. Their digestive system is more sensitive to plant matter than cats. Unfortunately, Petco does not carry any food that is healthy for a ferret’s digestive tracts. Honestly, there is no perfect kibble. Marshalls premium, for example is mid quality and meets only basic needs. However, there are better options with higher quality ingredients that could also be sold within the store:
Wysong ferret epigen 90 digestive support
Nature's Gold ferret food
Young Again ferret food
Stella and Chewy's Freeze dried raw cat food
These are all wonderful options to have available in-store for a variety of owners. I guarantee owners including myself would happily buy any of these options from you. Currently, your stores only offer options known to cause many health issues. These options are not only readily available in your store, but recommended by employees:
Kaytee – Advertised as a blend of fruits, vegetables, seeds and grains. The opposite of what a ferret should be eating.
ZuPreem – Wheat and potato are in the top 4 ingredients.
Mazuri – Brown rice and soybean meal are in the top 3 ingredients.
Sheppard & Greene – Rice and corn are in the top 5 ingredients. (corn is in there twice)
Sunseed Vita Prima – rice, corn, and wheat in the top 5 ingredients.
These foods are causing more harm than Petco realizes. Many of the ferret foods on your shelves(including those listed above, and others) contain ingredients like Peas, chickpeas, lentils, and sweet potatoes; which are known to cause (potentially fatal) bladder stones in ferrets. These foods unfortunately include Tapioca, malt, and molasses as well as other forms of sugar, which are all known to cause insulinoma and diabetes and more. It is a horrible, shocking thing for a first-time ferret owner to think they are feeding their pet a healthy food, and watch their ferret have a seizure because of that food. Many foods also contain BHA, BHT and Sodium Benzoate, which are preservatives that are known causes of cancer. Petco has removed cat and dog foods from its shelves with these ingredients, and it seems unethical that these foods with the same ingredients are still stocked and recommended just because they are for ferrets rather than cats or dogs.
https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/c/betternutrition-ingredients
Petco has taken great pride in carrying a wide selection of high quality foods for many species including cats and dogs, but ferrets are not included in this store expectation. I have been told several times that Petco products are expertly tested and backed by veterinarians; I cannot believe this, knowing that your only options for ferrets all lead to serious health issues and ultimately death.
Most often, ferrets and their related products are displayed in the rodent section of your stores. There is a common misconception that ferrets are in the rodent family, though in reality they are more closely related to a cat than a mouse. Being housed in the rodent section perpetuates this issue because prospective owners think they are purchasing a low maintenance pet that will be happy to stay in a relatively small cage and run on a wheel. The idea of ferrets being low maintenance pets is wildly inaccurate. It causes thousands of ferrets to end up with owners that unwittingly put them in situations that cause their health to decline and ultimately, die much younger than they should. As it stands, you have the ferret care level labeled as average. If you were to label them as at least intermediate, this could inform the potential owner that these animals are higher maintenance and require more care, attention, and dedication. They also require an exotic veterinarian, which incurs a higher cost to be seen. Because ferrets health can decline quickly, taking them to an exotic vet is not a possibility, but an inevitability.
Living conditions are very important to the health of a ferret. The amount of space, type of bedding, as well as how they are fed and watered, can drastically affect the health and happiness of a ferret. The display cases that available young ferrets are kept in are not ferret safe. For example, the Petco ferret display cases usually have paper bedding, which is known to cause upper respiratory infections, due to breathing in the dust from the bedding. Unfortunately, many newly adopted ferrets go home with URIs for this reason. Also, ferrets will sometimes eat paper bedding, risking deadly bowel obstructions. There are bedding options that do not hold these dangers, such as Marshalls paper pellets, Purina unscented yesterday's news, or even straw. Plus, they are just as easy, if not easier, to maintain.
Another problem is that the display cases are overcrowded, creating a breeding ground for illness for young ferrets. With overcrowding comes ear mites and (again) upper respiratory infections that easily pass from ferret to ferret in those cramped living conditions. Many ferrets are leaving your stores with both of these ailments. If you are going to be housing 7+ ferrets for any amount of time, an acceptable amount of space would be about 17sqft. A single ferret, would need an enclosure at least 3ft L x 3ft W x 2ft D. These size requirements are extreme for a store display, but these current cases are barely large enough for one ferret. By adding more levels and having less ferrets at a time in these cases you would allow safer conditions for their stay. I understand the display cases are only meant to hold ferrets for a week or so at a time, but it is not uncommon for ferrets to be in these display cases for months at a time.
There is a common problem with the food in Petco ferret displays; not getting switched out often enough, or being taken care of properly. Often, they are given [Marshalls] soupies; which are ground up kibble with water. Soupies are great for ferrets, because it helps prevent prolapse in young ferrets! However, soupies(or any wet style food) should only be left out for 2 hours maximum. If they are left out longer, (which is not advised) they need to be rehydrated properly. The soupies in Petco display cases tend to be left out until it is old and crusted over with paper bedding mixed into it. Leaving them out for so long causes upset stomachs and diarrhea- leading to malnutrition and dehydration - or even worse, starvation. These health concerns are only magnified by the exclusive use of hanging water bottles in the displays. These bottles do not allow enough water for the amount of work it takes for a ferret to use, and are causing your ferrets to get (and remain) dehydrated. The combination of hanging water bottles and old, crusty soupies can be deadly for young ferrets. These bottles are also widely known to break the teeth of young and very old ferrets. Hanging bottles are an unnecessary risk, bordering on inhumane when used as the only hydration source. They should be provided with bowls, which are much easier for ferrets to drink from, and less hazardous to their teeth. Your store carries a wide variety of auto waters that will be just as easy to fill as the bottles.
Outside of nutrition and living conditions, customers(in most stores) can simply ask to interact with these ferrets and they are handed over without a second thought. Ferrets are susceptible to many illnesses that are easily passed around (flu, colds, strep and distemper, to name a few). Handling a ferret in a public space should be done with caution.
It is my understanding that Petco is phasing the severely outdated Marshalls pamphlets out, and they are being replaced with the Petco ferret care sheet, which are significantly better, but still concerning. In these care sheets, paper bedding is recommended. However, while some bedding can be used, soft fabrics are often preferred by ferrets, such as small fleece blankets.
A very big concern in the Petco care sheet is the recommendation of monthly baths with shampoo. Bathing ferrets at all is only recommended when absolutely necessary, and never with shampoo. The shampoo strips their natural oils, making their skin itchier and their musk even stronger. Even with these concerns, the Petco care sheet is far superior to the Marshalls pamphlet.
Unfortunately, Petco does not uphold the standards and recommendations advertised in the care sheet within their own store. The care sheet recommends having a large, multi-level, wired habitat with good ventilation. However, not only are the ferrets at Petco kept in plexiglass enclosures that do not allow proper ventilation, the recommended cages are not readily available in store, and need to be ordered online. Because of this, many ferrets being adopted are leaving the store in unsuitable enclosures, such as guinea pig cages. The first exposure to the care of a ferret any potential new owner has, is the care given by the store selling them. The ferret care sheet says to scoop the litter boxes in a ferret enclosure daily or as often as necessary, and to change the bedding once a week. There are many accounts of customers observing enclosures that have not been cleaned in so long, that they are infested with bugs. The care sheet also recommends trimming ferrets claws every few weeks. A ferret that I adopted from Petco myself, had claws so long they were digging into the pads of her paws. She had been at the store for 4 months. If Petco doesn’t hold itself to its own standards for pet care, how can any new pet owner be expected to meet those standards? Teach by example; actions speak louder than words.
These young ferrets deserve better care and their future owners deserve more information before adopting. So many new owners learn the basic care of a ferret from the standard Petco employee. By giving your employees the proper education; Petco has the ability to make a huge difference in ferret care and stigma. But as it stands, they are only adding to the serious consequences of our society being undereducated and assuming ferrets are stinky, rabid, savage rodents. These young ferrets deserve more, and as the Petco ferret care sheet shows my requests are the bare minimum for their health and safety.
I want to be clear. This is a problem that has continued for far too long. The conditions that Petco ferrets are kept in are unacceptable. I've included pictures and videos from Washington, Texas and Massachusetts. This is a nationwide problem and the nation is watching. This is not a cause I am taking lightly, and I am not going to go away. I don’t quiet down; I will only get louder.
Sincerely
Sarah

Note
Hey there! My kitty, Cedric (neutered 4y/o, male) is kinda odd. He'll be cuddling, purring, kneeding, then he suddenly snaps and starts growling and hissing, as well a bite us. He'll actually square up with my boyfriend and look like he's about to attack. Before it's suggested- my boyfriend does not abuse Cedric. They're best buds aside from this. If I even suspected something was happening my boyfriend would be out on the street in a second. What could cause these sudden changes in behavior?
After ruling out injury or illness, it’s most likely overstimulation.
This article does a good job explaining what’s going on.
Cat: Overstimulation - SFSPCA
Overstimulation refers to a cat’s normal response to being petted or handled in areas or ways the cat finds uncomfortable or have gone on for too long. A majority of cats exhibit overstimulation or petting-induced aggression to some degree. However, cats vary enormously as to the extent to which they like petting or handling and for how long they tolerate these without finding it aversive. They also vary greatly in the number and intensity of warning signals before it might result in aggressive reactions when those warning signals are neglected or ignored
Here are some ways to help you develop a healthy way of petting your cat and to be safe.
 Keep your petting sessions short and to the areas where the cat truly enjoys your touch; keep in mind that it is very important to avoid getting the cat to the point where she is irritated. Even if you feel okay with the level of aggression, your cat might find this handling quite stressful. It also may reinforce biting behavior and may increase aggressive incidents and/or intensity in the future. Therefore, if you know your cat may get overstimulated after about 2 minutes of petting, then only pet the cat for 1 minute and give it a break. Similarly if you know your cat doesn’t like to be petted a certain way or in a particular area, avoid doing so as much as possible. After a while you can increase petting time a little and see how well she tolerates it.
 Observe for signs of overstimulation and impending aggression. Cats almost always give clear warning signals before biting or scratching. It can be difficult to pick up on those signs at first because cats can be subtle in their body language. Common signals to look for include: tail swishing or flicking, skin twitching over the back, flattening of the ears, freezing, tenseness or staring, quick head turn to watch your hand as you pet, pupillary dilation, low growl, or walking away and lying down. Pay close attention to other environmental changes such as loud noises and animals and people entering the room.
 Stop petting at the first sign of any of these early warning signals. You can do this by just keeping your hands still by your sides. If the cat is very upset you may want to walk away from the cat, or if on your lap, stand up slowly and let the cat gently slide off.
 Wait before attempting to pet again. Some cats only take a few minutes to settle down; others can take several hours. Make sure that all signals of irritation have stopped. If the cat is still worked up, switch to playtime with quiet interactive toys such as a feather or string toy. This can help decrease the arousal to touch, while still allowing you to interact.
 Only pet your cat in the areas she truly enjoys. Most cats like to rub their faces or bodies on an offered hand, but do not appreciate long strokes over their bodies. It is important to know your cat, if she generally gets aggressive when petting the tail base, stay around the head for petting.
 Punishment is not the way to address this behavior problem; it will not make your cats more comfortable with handling or less aggressive. Never yell or hit your cats as this might only make your cat fear you or become even more aggressive. The only way to address these behaviors is avoidance and proper handling and play techniques.
The prognosis for this type of behavior in a home situation is good in most cases, given it is mostly a management problem. However, cats with rough play manners or who do not like to be petted or handled should not be allowed to play with young children or older people. The risk for injuries and infections are significant. For a good prognosis it is important to:
 Read the cat’s body language
 Understand of basic needs of cats
 Accept limitations to petting and the patience to not push the cat to accept more than she can handle

Consider This: Cat Edition
Also: How to Improve Relations With Your Cat
So, I’ve got a bit of a rant to make about how to better your friendship with your pet cat. I’m gonna outline some of the obvious stuff first before moving on to My Opinion™, which means I’m not an expert but probably better than the average layman when it comes to dispensing experiential wisdom.
Here we go~!
As a cat owner myself, I’ve sought out a ton of anecdotal advice as well as expert advice on the raising and treatment of pet cats. Some advice I’ve had to ignore, while others made life so much easier for me and my cat. Along the way, I subconsciously developed a set of standards for my interaction with my cat, which I feel like might benefit cat owners across the board, new or experienced.
Also, please be aware that this is MY take on this subject. Not all cats are the same. Nonetheless, accept the challenge of getting to you know your cat better by remembering these important rules:
(That said, I’m gonna address cats as ‘her’ because ‘it’ tends to create distance by dehumanizing or Othering others, not just your cat).
1. You can judge a (hu)man by the way he treats the help, children, and animals.
How well do you treat service people? How do you treat your children? Or better yet, how do you treat other people in general? Think about that, and then apply it to your cat. You may be guilty of treating your cat like shit, despite good intentions. Ignorance is your enemy here. So, here are some tips on how to respect your cat:
2. Cats aren’t dogs. Stop expecting her to behave like one.
3. Cats aren’t humans. Stop projecting. Cats have cat needs.
4. Wash their feed and water bowls frequently. Just because your cat is willing to eat off the floor doesn’t mean they should tolerate a filthy dish. Doing so will keep your cat free of bacterial infections, gut problems, and disease. If the bowl has a pink or blue rime in it, WASH IT with SOAP. If it’s got a nice green or black colony stain, pitch the bowl if it’s plastic, WASH WITH SOAP if it’s glass or metal. Wash OFTEN.
Same goes for food! Don’t leave food rotting in the bowl. Pitch it when it gets horrid, clean the dish, serve fresh. Also, don’t starve your cat just because she doesn’t like the food you bought for her. Don’t punish your cat like that. Would you do that to a child or a friend? No? Then don’t do it to your cat.
5. If your cat is sitting on your lap or is being carried in your arms, do not suddenly drop or dump your cat onto the floor. I see this all the goddamn time and it drives me nuts. How would you like it if you were suddenly shoved off the couch? Or if someone picks you up and then just drops you without warning? Just because cats usually land on their feet doesn’t mean they should. Heavy landings can stress joints or cause joint and muscle injury, especially if your cat is heavy-set or elderly.
6. Pet your cat nicely. I always see people petting their cats like they would a dog, that is, with a heavy slap on the back of the head followed by a hard stroke along the spine. How would you like it if someone just slammed a hand onto your head and then tried to push you down to the floor? Yeah. Pet her nicely. Stop being rough with your cat. (The exception is playtime, coz then your cat is expecting it.) She’ll probably just keep avoiding you if you pet her like a maniac.
7. Stop punishing your cat after the fact. Unless she is rebuked the very second she does a Bad, your cat will not understand why you’re punishing her. Cats don’t make that connection. It makes you look inconsistent and unpredictable, and she will not trust you as easily. Example: My mother, who is not a cat person, tried to punish my cat for scratching her. This meant ignoring my cat for days. My cat did not know why she was being ignored, and just spent most of the time hiding. My mother was convinced that my cat was sulking because she felt guilty, and that ignoring her would be effective in getting my cat to understand what she had done wrong. I had to explain to my mother that cats don’t operate like that; cats are not like children. Also: stop projecting onto your cat.
8. LISTEN to your cat. The only reason cats meow is to communicate with humans. Cats have evolved especially to sound like babies in order to get our attention.* Mothers will meow to kittens and kittens will mew in return, but when a cat is making noises at you, it wants your attention. Also, pay attention to the tone of meow she makes. She may be expressing displeasure (which will be followed up by a scratch or a bite!), fear, or she may be alerting you to something (like a fire, or if something in the current environment changes abruptly). If your cat gives you a warning noise, then abstain from whatever you’re doing. Do this, and your cat will make a better habit of warning you before she strikes. Cats that strike without talking have usually skipped the warning because they fully expect to be ignored.
9. CLEAN THE GODDAMN LITTERBOX. If the smell is offensive to you, imagine what it’s like for your cat, who has a much more sensitive nose than you do. Not only that, but would you use a toilet full of mounds of crap that hasn’t been cleaned, ever? When your cat stops using her litterbox because it’s full, absolutely do not punish her for peeing on the carpet. This is YOUR fault. Clean the damn box.
Advanced Level:
10. Imagine things from your cat’s perspective. You are a soft, small creature in a giant’s world. Everything is bigger than you: trees, cars, dogs, and especially humans. And most of the time, dumbass humans are not paying attention to anything. All you have are your teeny claws and a bacterial bite to defend yourself with. None of these things will save you if a human suddenly decides to grab you or if you get hit by a car. So, if your cat seems tense or easily startled, understand that she’s a small cat in a human’s world.
That said, if you accidentally frighten your cat, you CAN go and find her and pet her gently until she’s not so scared anymore. Many people just shrug and leave their cat alone, and assume that she’ll just get over it. That’s not the case -- your cat CAN experience trauma even from domestic events (like turning on the vacuum cleaner or because the washer makes a loud noise), but her paranoia can be abated if you seek her out and reassure her that you’re not mad at her, and that the scary thing is gone now. When you do this, be gentle. Approach from an angle where she can see you, or make a little noise to let her know you’re nearby.
Also try to understand when your cat is suffering. Is she ill? Is she cold? Overheating? Is she sore, or in pain? Cats hide when they’re feeling under the weather, so if she’s suddenly not present or as playful, and if her tail is down, then take her to the vet asap. Don’t let things escalate. If it was your own kid who suddenly came down sick, wouldn’t you take it to see a doctor straight away?
Your cat is a thinking, feeling being just like you. Show her some respect. Be the person your cat deserves.
Super Advanced Level:
Consider the life of your cat. All she’s ever known prior to meeting you was probably her own mother, or if she was rescued or separated too young, then she only knows that she gets passed around, and nobody talks to her. But when you finally come into the picture, either when she’s still a kitten or as a rescue much later on, YOU become her universe. Her entire day revolves around you: Getting up in the morning, breakfast, disappearing off to work for the day, coming home, dinner, then going to bed. Now, imagine: if every single one of your interactions with your cat is a positive one -- for example, petting and greeting and offering treats, or talking to her making eye contact, etc -- then that’s all your cat will know. And having your cat know only joy when she’s with you is something you want for her, right? If you’re always mean to her, or when you shove her away or ignore her, then she’ll think you’re weird and unpredictable and a little scary, and not very nice to be with at all. You’re all she has in life -- so please, make your cat’s life a happy one.
Epilogue:
If you want to develop a close bond with your cat, just spend time with her. Sit down with her, rub her belly (if she lets you, lol), pet her and talk to her, play with her, find out what she likes. Find out what her meow tones are, observe her body language, see what she looks like when she’s hungry or bored or playful or tetchy. Watch that tail, watch those ears. Feel bad about never making time for your cat? Don’t get another cat because you think she’s lonely. She wants to be with YOU, not some other cat.
Does your cat talk to you a lot? Good, because it means you’re communicating. That’s what friends do. Don’t treat your cat like you would a stranger. YOU are her entire world. Don’t be a shitty world to your cat.
Bonus: The Tail Code
Tail up -- happy
Tail down -- sad, in pain, scared, angry
Tail tucked -- insecure, nervous
Tail in a question mark -- playful, curious
Tail at medium, neither high or low -- meh, bored.
Tail puffed -- frightened, agitated, startled. Also accompanied by fur raising on end, arched back, ears back, hissing. May also walk sideways on her toes, looks super weird.
Tail down and switching from side to side, ‘whipping’ -- pissy. May strike or bite.
Tail up and wagging, ‘swishing’ -- very happy, content, focused.
Tail up and trembling -- super excited.
Tail wrapped around another cat, or your arm -- friendly, like an arm around the shoulder.
