A UK citizen has been sentenced to three months in jail in Dubai after “insulting” airport staff who were slow to bring his mother a wheelchair.

The unnamed man was originally issued a Dh 10,000 (£2,150) fine, but his appeal against this failed and his punishment was extended to a jail term on 6 November.

The Court of Appeal heard that the man began to insult staff at Dubai International Airport after they told him that they couldn’t immediately bring his mother a wheelchair, reports the Daily Mail. The incident happened in February 2022.

An airport employee told the court that the man swore at her after she had explained the airport’s wheelchair policy to him, telling him that “a wheelchair would be made available before boarding the bus”.

“I saw the traveller repeatedly asking an airport desk employee about the wheelchair and expected that he might have not understood her explanation,” she said, reports The National.

“When I tried to explain it to him, he insulted me using very bad language. I told the traveller that using such offensive language is not allowed at Dubai airport but he responded that he didn’t care.”

The employee then called the police, and a case was filed against the man in Dubai’s Criminal Court. Following an appeal, which he lost, the fine was escalated into a jail sentence, followed by immediate deportation.

The Independent has contacted the Dubai court system for comment.

The Emirate is known for its strict laws over what it deems offensive behaviour. In October, an American student briefly faced a year in prison after being accused of assaulting staff during an altercation. In 2017, a British tourist was also sentenced to a brief jail term after making “rude gestures” and touching a man’s hip in a bar.

 If you travel by air a lot, beware of over friendly chatty seat neighbours.

The older lady comes and sits next to me inside the plane. She asked me to help her put her bag in the overhead luggage compartment. But a gentleman sitting across quickly came through. (I am not very tall and the overhead luggage compartment is something I try to avoid at all costs.

Immediately she sits down she strikes up a conversation. She was very pleasant and well spoken. So we chatted all through the flight to Dubai.

Suddenly, when the pilot announced that we were now proceeding to begin our descent into DXB, my good friend 'developed' stomach pains. Me with my good heart, I pressed the stewards button, and the stewardess came to find out what the problem was. I told her my seat mate was not feeling well. And this lady, she suddenly began to address me as 'my daughter'.

The stewardess told me that there was nothing they could do except give her some painkillers and wait until we landed. The pilot announced that we had a medical emergency on board and advised us all to stay calm. My new friend was crying and sweating like crazy. And she refused to let go of my hand... everyone assumed we knew each other.

So we landed at DXB and the same gentleman who helped put up her luggage in the overhead compartment removed her luggage. But as he removed the luggage, he advised me to distance myself from this lady and make it clear to the cabin crew that we were NOT travelling together. He was a godsend!

So indeed, the cabin crew came and asked me if we were related, I categorically told them we had met on the plane. I didn't know her at all. So we began to deplane and as I said goodbye she kept begging me to carry her handbag. I was so torn... but the gentleman looked me in the eye and emphatically shook his head. He passed me a note telling me to let the cabin crew handle her.

So I exit the aircraft and leave my 'new friend' to wait for the wheelchair and be handled by the cabin crew feeling very guilty.

As we waited for our luggage to come through, I hear this commotion. My 'new friend' was running, trying to escape the cabin crew, having gotten out of the wheelchair! She left the stewardess with her handbag and just ran towards the exit with the rest of her hand luggage! Luckily the airport police were faster than her. They got hold of her and brought her back in handcuffs.

This lady starts calling out to me.. my daughter... my daughter!.. how could you do this to me..... that's when I caught on. She was carrying drugs and she was trying to implicate me!

Luckily for me, the gentleman who had helped her with her luggage came forward and told the airport police that me and her had just met on the plane. The police took my passport and asked her to reveal my full names if it was true we were travelling together. By God's grace, I had not even told her my first name! I was still asked to follow the police to a little room where I was questioned extensively. Where did I meet her?... where did I board... where did she board. Etc... And my luggage was extensively searched and dusted for fingerprints.

They dusted all her luggage and my fingerprints were not found anywhere on her luggage or on her handbag!

I was let go with advice never ever to touch anyone's luggage either in flight or at the airport. So from that day, I don't care how much luggage you have, you will deal with it yourself. I will not even offer you a trolley to put your luggage on! Your luggage... your problem.... is my policy. And if you can't reach the overhead compartment, and I am the nearest person, please call the cabin crew because all I will do is give you a blank stare and then look away!

A lesson to glean therein for intending air travelers.

The Start of Something New

Following on from my last trip overseas to Taiwan, it took another three years for me to finally venture past my country’s borders as the COVID-19 pandemic subsided. True, the disease is still out there and still has the potential to cause catastrophic harm but people no longer consider it with the same amount of fear as they did before. Regardless, my first destination after so long was to head to Egypt - a land steeped in history and mythology. For a connoisseur of the mystic arts, such as myself, and after taking Ancient History in high school, going to Egypt was like a dream come true! For the first, and possibly only time, I would be walking past the pyramids, come face to face with statues of the gods and the pharaohs of old! 

Suffice it to say, such a would would be exciting, if not exhilarating for one such as I.

The start of the trip was not the most auspicious of days. It was a Tuesday and I had to climb out of bed at 3AM in the morning to make the 6AM flight. Not very fun, I assure you. Despite that, we managed to check-in with time to spare, although we were not able to upgrade to business class like my mother wanted. 

In my opinion, it was for the best. Who wants to fork out an extra $3000 for a few minor luxuries?

Ah, that’s right. I ought to explain the plural ‘we’ that I’ve used in the last few paragraphs. On this first trip overseas since COVID, I was travelling with my Grandma. Meet Popo! And we were going with a tour group. This was no solo wing-it trip. Oh no! Our tour group was about about thirty people strong and we had exchanged pleasantries as we checked in, although I didn’t know anybody.

Fun fact, I was the youngest person on the trip by about 12 years! Whereas Popo was the oldest, sitting comfortably at the ripe old age of 85!

Now, when it comes to travelling with Emirates, there are no direct flights to Cairo from Sydney. Rather, we had to transit through. Which, in and itself, was a 14 hour flight. Coupled with an additional 4 hours as well as the transit time, that was approximately 20-ish hours!

Some might consider that an overly long time. And it was plenty long to be sitting in an uncomfortable airplane chair, waiting for the forming nitrogen bubbles in my joints to enter my brain and kill me, but it also gave me time to peruse what entertainment Emirates had on offer!

On my bucket list of things to watch, I knocked out the Harry Potter 20th Year Anniversay - Robbie Coltrane, may you rest in peace - and watched the Julia Roberts and George Clooney comedy film: Ticket to Paradise.

Now, it should be known that the main reason why I would watch such a film was not to keep up to date with old Hollywood heartthrobs. The main reason why I would watch a vapid film about a girl marrying a guy she’d met about 30 days ago was really because I wanted to see Kaitlyn Dever’s performance in it. And let’s just say she nailed the part of playing the daughter to two famous movie stairs. 

The film also starred Billie Lourd, reprising the role she kinda had in Booksmart. Honestly, when seeing her work on American Horror Story and comparing it to the party girl typecast that she seems to be thrust in when it comes to major blockbuster titles or Hollywood films, it seems such a waste to me.

And because I still had almost 10 more hours to go on the flight, I decided to binge watch the entirety of Season 2 of Why Women Kill, starring of course, my favourite Evil Queen: Lana Parrilla from Once Upon a Time.

By the time the flight landed in Dubai International Airport, I was on the edge of my seat, wondering how the season of Why Women Kill would end. Of course, by then, we had to disembark and go through another security check. An ordeal that took quite a while although none of the security cared if we had more than 100ml of water with us when it came to connecting flights. 

Unfortunately for me, my grandmother was eligible for wheelchair and priority access. Getting on the cart that arrived, she was whisked away by airport staff to an unknown location and I was left to walk to the gate as there simply wasn’t enough seats on the golf cart for additional passengers.

But despite me taking the long way to the gate, by the time I arrived, there was no sign of Popo. Even talking to the staff manning the gate, he was unable to tell me where my grandmother was! And they were already making the final boarding call for the connecting flight to Cairo!

What in the world could I do? 

Ought I stay behind in Dubai as the rest of our tour group boarded? Could I try calling my grandmother instead?

Long story short, the cart pulled up with a few moments to spare, although I very nearly had to suffer through a panic attack. Popo and I boarded the connecting flight and I managed to finish off the second season of Why Women Kill before we arrived in Cairo.

After a late dinner at a Chinese restaurant - the food was average at best - we arrived at our hotel: St Regis Almasa to rest after a trying day of flights, catastrophising and watching a once mousy understanding woman let go of her moral sensibilities all to join an elite gardening club.

The drive from downtown Dubai to Khor Fakkan was dramatic and indelibly impressive. It was the leaving behind of a futuristic steely utopia, then past the desert landscapes to an enclave of Sharjah that is meditatively mountainous, opening up to the cyan-to-cerulean waters of the Gulf of Oman.

I hired a driver who came to pick me up from my hotel in downtown Dubai. It was around 7 am. We got to Khor Fakkan around 9:00 am, considering some slight traffic getting out of Dubai.

The first stop was at Sheesh Park. A lush green park surrounded by rounded ridges of the Hajar mountains that opened up in 2020. It has bbq picnic areas for families. There's a cafe by an 80 feet artificial waterfall. And winding staircase up the mountains to extensive walkways with panoramic views of the park.

This was a great recreational spot for families, hikers, or people just getting away from urban sprawls to breathe better and rejuvenate. However, I wouldn't say that this place is accessible to anyone who uses a wheelchair. Unless the individual or a personal caretaker can maneuver the wheelchair through uneven roads leading up to the cafe, it's not a hundred percent accessible.

Why is no one talking about the fact that...

One of Marc's victims was killed in New York ("Gabon, New York, Dubai.")? Like, who was he? Did Marc team up with the Punisher or Deadpool or Spider-Man or Daredevil or Iron Fist or one of the Avengers to kill that guy?

That's my headcanon now. Marc teamed up with one of the Avengers, Defenders, or Deadpool to take someone out.

I also wonder about the guy in the wheelchair or any of the women he killed. I mean I know disabled people can crime too, but I wonder what Wheelchair Guy did to warrant being judged and killed by Khonshu.

Protags and apart are besties. They hate her, and bond over that, and both go to the same campus. Apart guy is still kinda on speaking terms with her.

After a few weeks, news breaks that she gave birth to a kid. A couple months after that, apart guy finds out she is dead. On that night, he goes and discovers she is living with rat, but both day and her are dead. Their kid is in the other room. Apart guy takes her kid, and brings them back to campus. They decide to keep the kid with apart guy parents.

Act 4

He is dejected, but is happy when he sees her in his room.

They get very close over the next few days, and his addictions are reduced a lot. He is much happier, but their is one missing piece. No one knows how his ex was killed. She and the rat are dead, but their kid is saved. They seem to have been murdered.

They hear someone coming, and as he looks into her gorgeous sparkling blue eyes, he falls into a dream.

In the dream, he is intercepted while being expelled from camp, and his car is taken to a desert like place. He and a few other people, enter a arena and their is a monster from percy jackson. Draco malloy kills it, and voldemort sends his de army to hunt all of malfoys. Protag jumps up and over the “malloy manor” that is actually an over resort like thing, in the style of atlantis hotel. Thousands of de army people infiltrats it. Rayquazxa the pokémon is surrounding the dubai tower. The whole world has been turned upside down, and is a hellscape.

Protag wakes up and realsises it was a dream. She is awake, and they do i’m stuff.

A couple hours before camp ends, he is caught and expelled.

He goes home with his head held in shame, but his parents decides he is old enough to make his own decisions, and send him back to college.
