Coat Color And Grooming Needs Of Scottish Terriers

At first sight, you may think a Scottish Terrier only comes in a black coat. But he doesn’t. This dog can also be in brindle, wheaten, steel, or gray. A Scottie (shortened label for the breed) with a wheaten coat resembles the White Terriers of the West Highlands. This case isn’t surprising since the two breeds have an intertwined origin.

A Scottie has a dual-layered coat. His over or topcoat is wiry and hard, whereas his under or bottom coat is dense and soft. He only sheds minimally as his hair continuously grows. His skin is always dry, so he’s not recommended to bathe very often – only when necessary.

Many assume that a Scottie is low-maintenance in terms of grooming. But he isn’t since he requires regular grooming. For one, his coat needs daily grooming if he’s being shown and weekly if he’s kept as a pet.

obvs the norwich/norfolk and smooth/wire fox terriers are clear examples, but broader also: the road isn't all that long from a lakeland to a welsh terrier, and they are both fox terriers in form and function. if we take a step to the left, irish terriers are taller and lighter in build, but overall similar. staying there, kerry blue largely came out of wheaten terriers. sealyhams are said to have influence from fox terriers and westies, but despite some details (ears and the longer body) are built on a frame very similar to scotties. scotties came from the same stock as cairns and westies. dandie dinmonts are just as bizarre as they've always been, so i'm not sure you could change it if you tried. and no one seems to agree on what exactly a jack russell terrier is anyway.

Today's tepid take is that there is absolutely no - none, zero - good reason for any of the british terrier breeds to not outcross to each other

Favourite dog client you’ve ever worked with? Least favourite?

Oof, I don’t know that I have just the one favorite client dog. There are many that I’ve loved over the years, some I’ve loved but hated the human while others I’ve loved the human and hated the dog LMAO but still others where I like both.

Most of my favorite dogs are ones I’d want to take home. TaterTot, the chi mix who I desperately wanted to adopt. Benny, the 3 year old god-knows-what that looked identical to a GSD puppy frozen in time. Jackson, the bullmastiff mix with a smushy head and a heart of gold. Booboo, the dane who died this year from a heart infection the same day Sushi was born. Allie(gator), the wild terrier mix that was impossibly mismatched with her elderly owners but they adored her and worked hard to make it work. Chloe, the GSD/chi (known mix) and her owner who just rolled with the punches. There are more, but I’ll stop here.

My least favorite dogs are almost invariably the huskys. Sorry husky fans! A well trained, well behaved husky is one thing, but badly behaved huskys are known to become brats and, well, by the time anyone’s enlisting my help? The dog is absolutely a brat. And while I don’t have a problem with fixing bratty behavior, I would say that I’m also *really* tired of getting bitten and scratched by a dog that’s learned to gator roll and flail the second anyone touches the leash and for some reason IT’S ALWAYS THE HUSKYS THAT DO IT. Sometimes it’s the other breeds/mixes but the huskys do it 100% of the time and I want to fling them.

I also really don’t like the majority of my corso clients but for the basic reason that most of them got the thing because they wanted a big impressive dog that looked cool, heard “protective” and decided that’s what they needed, and then wait several months before handing me the leash of a large, sharp mastiff that’s learned that roaring and lunging at people gets it its way. 0/10 do not recommend please stop getting these dogs if you’re not going to respect what these dogs actually are and what they are capable of.

Despite my overall dislike of the Scottie breed, there was a singular Scottie client that I did end up liking and his name is Mr. McGuffin and he had a very stupid name and his owners were very proud of his very stupid name and he was probably the happiest and friendliest Scottie out there. Additionally he was brindle, and I’d never seen a brindle Scottie before, and I think that helped some of my reservations towards him because the two that attacked me were black and white (’wheaten’, but a 4yo just sees a light cream colored dog biting them and says ‘white’ tbh). They also kept him out of the traditional Scottie trim, opting instead for a mostly-Scottie face but a short fluffy body overall, which I think complimented his happy-go-lucky appearance. I don’t think I’d want him, still, because he was a Scottie, but I did like him quite a lot.

I love your Gone to the Dogs series! Its so sweet and fluffy! Rumbelle and dogs make so much sense. Okay, my question: where did you come up with that idea? Also, how did you choose Stewart and Sophie's breeds and names?

Oh, those are awesome questions!  This may get a bit lengthy cause I love talking about this stuff!

Well, first of all … . . GTTD was actually a one shot initially, done as a RSS gift in  2014, or actually 2015.  I was a “stand in Santa” in 2014 for someone who didn’t receive a gift, and their prompt was “Seriously awkward but adorable flirting.”

As you can see, it was fairly well received, so I continued with it, but it was really written as a one shot.  

As far as their breeds and names?

Well … I decided on Scottish terrier right away for Gold because HELLO, Scottish!  However … I wanted him to be different.  Not just a standard Scottie.  Gold would want a dog that stood out as obviously pedigreed and VERY expensive at that point in his life.  So I did some research on the breed and found out that Scotties don’t just come in black/grey, they also come in Wheaten, and right then I knew I found the dog.  So he would look like this:

As far as the name goes … . I searched for popular male names in Scotland and I knew Gold would name him something VERY proper and Stewart showed up and the first thing I thought of was Rod Stewart – who is, in fact, a Scot – but it just kind of fit.  So that’s how I came up with Stewart.

As far as Sophie goes … . I wanted Belle’s dog to be the complete OPPOSITE of Gold’s in every way – big, clumsy, awkward, and just not a dog that most people run to, and one that would look absolutely ridiculous with Gold’s little Scottie.  Because that is exactly the kind of dog that would capture Belle’s heart.  The two largest breeds I could think of were Great Dane and Bernese Mountain Dog, but I didn’t want a purebreed (and Belle wouldn’t care about that kind of thing anyway), so I googled to see if there were any photos of what a dane/bernie mix might look like.  I found this:

So Belle’s dog had a face – now I needed a name.  I did the same for her – searched popular female names in Australia.  Sophie showed up in the top 10, and I liked the two “S” names together and thought it fit her.  So Sophie was born!  

I just want to add one more thing … . in my you tube adventures to understand the mannerisms of this breed, I found this video of a Wheaten Scottie having a CONNIPTION FIT at a ladder, and it just screamed Rumbelle to me because of the ladder scene.  So here it is:

My fuzzy nephews, there are days they are the best behaved nephews I have. Lol Herbie is a 12 year old red nose pit and he has been pony ride and chew toy for both my nephews and my niece and Michelangelo is a 6 month old Wheaten Scottish Terrior. My younger nephew Wyatt work everyday for my mom breeds and sells Scottish Terriers for a couple of months helping her with a litter but he named after all of the ninja turtles because he's obsessed and they let him have Mikey. He is so cute running around with his little puppy, he won't even spend the night at his friends or my house anymore because he says Mikey misses him it's so funny.
