so sorry if this is a bit of an off question but i was wondering if you had any specific thesaurus you liked to use? i’m absolutely in love with your range of vocabulary but i haven’t been able to find any good thesauri either online or a physical version. unless of course you just come up with it all for. your brain, in which case, holy moly.

ahhhh, thank you!!! i'm so happy you asked this, but it's also the worst thing you could have because i am unrepentant logophile lmao i can talk about words, etymology, why i picked the word i did in a fic foreverrrrr

but for the sake of an actual answer: i don't. it's rare that i use one tbh because i prefer knowing the word at its core over just swapping it out with something else. etymology is a huge passion of mine, and i've been collecting words i like for a long time now. i have a massive google doc filled with them that i try to add to at least a few times a week.

i usually pick them up reading fic or nonfic books. they're pretty technical—especially the ones about nature—so they always throw in ones i've never heard before. and then i start to think about how i can use this in a fic. how can i relate this particular word about mountain anatomy to an emotion. and that's kinda how it starts.

wikipedia is a hugeeee source of inspo for me, too. it's where i start first when i come across a word just to see if there's anything else in relation to it. etymonline is good, too! i love r/Words on Reddit. the biggest place for logophiles, tbh. WhatsTheWord and Vocabulary are also really good. i like these better than dictionaries or word of the day stuff. mostly though—i just google it.

I found a piece of snake shedding in the backyard and I was thinking to collect it and add it to either one of my shrines or on the bone shelf... but I'm not sure how should I go to store/preserve/whatstheword that snake skin as I mainly dealt with bones and shed horns.

You mentioned that you want to start writing, but so far, you’ve been preparing yourself by reading posts with writing tips.

Here’s the thing, anon. I won’t use your idea for that specific reason: I think you should be the one who writes it.

See, when I had the idea for my first multi-chapter work, I thought the same way: maybe I should send it to someone, and they would do it instead.

But they’d never portray the characters as I had them in my mind. Personal opinion here, but I feel that multi-chapter works need much more planning than a 2K-word one-shot. And your ask is so detailed that it looks like you have everything figured out; the plot is conceptualised, the emotions you want to convey are clear, and you’ve even laid out the chapters (maybe you did this subconsciously, but each paragraph in your request is an actual chapter!) You know how it will start, how it will progress, and even how it’ll end! You’re the only person who will do your story justice.

And as for me, I can only provide you with a few sites that often help me during the writing process.

Take a look around wordsnstuff. Their Resources for Describing Physical Things page is handy, especially for non-native English speakers.

SPW for their Words to Use Instead of SAID page. If you don’t like the website, you can google "other words instead of said" or something like that. I like it because it has these buttons that you can click on and redirect you to the section.

The How to Write Dialogue: Formatting, Examples, & Tips page from the Self-Publishing School. I go back to this every single time. I usually keep it open as I write. It helps with the dialogue “rules”.

Word Hippo for synonyms and similar words. It’s a thesaurus. Some people say it’s too basic, but I like it for that specific reason.

The Emotion Thesaurus: A Writer’s Guide to Character Expression by Angela Ackerman and Becca Puglisi. Some people download this off the internet, but I wanted to support the authors so I bought it for 6.00 EUR which is almost as much as a venti iced brown sugar oat-milk shaken espresso from Starbucks. Difference is that the thesaurus will prove helpful and it will stay with you forever, whilst the latter will go poof and make you jittery.

The r/writing, r/fanfiction, and r/whatstheword subreddits.

I hope the resources above can help you (and anyone reading this) with your journey.

Maybe start small; write drabbles. Or create another account/side blog if writing makes you feel too exposed. But don’t wait until you’re ready; you’ll never be.

There's not really an emergant concensus in english on what the word for the practice is, but it's definitely something folks do even outside your family OP. If you'll permit me to coin a poetic term for it, since a term's not be decided upon yet:

Sojourn Gifting

Sojourn: To reside temporarily. To dwell for a time in a place not considered a permanent residence.

Gift: bestowing voluntarily and without compensation, the act of giving.

Put together, the practice of voluntarily but temporarily bestowing an object to a people or place you've sojourned which you fully intend to reclaim when you resojourn, as an unspoken promise to do so.

I'm searching for a cultural term that may or may not exist.

You know the practice of leaving something at a friend or family member's house when you leave so you'll "have to come back again", as a sort of good luck charm? Sometimes it's a flirting thing, but I'm thinking of the platonic version where it's kind of a "I can't say goodbye forever, I still need to get my pen back".

Is this a cultural practice or something endemic to my family, and does it have a name?

in nightmare time episode 2 part 1 (the wedding), he's at the reception and looks at his watch, complaining about how long it's taking. this made me think; why is he so obsessed with time? and i was reminded of the famous quote from TGWDLM: "WEAR A WATCH!"

so! the man in a hurry went to beanies in the beggining of TGWDLM right before the meteor fell and met Emma but he disappears after that and the general appears – can he travel through time? Is that why he's so obsessed with his watch being synched with Paul's in the finale? Is THAT why he's in a hurry? Is he always trying to go back in time and save Hatchetfield? He's also there in the beginning of Black Friday but then he disappears! 

AND he wears....an overcoat.

Anyway I'm sorry there's no substantial evidence but I do believe this with my entire being :)

Look, she's not exactly a whatstheword, a voracious reader. An enthusiast of comics, yes, but the type that's fast and easy to read. Kyoka reads to escape reality and have fun, not to have headaches from overthinking. She knows what she likes, and she sticks it: fashion, magical girl, theater.

With theater being all she grew up with, it's no surprise that she finds the theater setting in Jeongnyeon so familiar. The time period, it almost reminds her of her grandma's stories about her own girlhood, minus the traveling of course.

Her eye are already well glued onto the third volume by the time Hanbin comes around. Kyoka peeks over the pages and beckons him over. She points at the book now in her lap, grinning.

"Jeongnyeon. It's a bit old-fashioned," at that she crinkles her nose, "but... somehow it reminds me of home. I'm learning a lot about changgeuk through it. It's... cool, learning about Korean culture from the past this way."

"Are you having any luck?" Hanbin's voice breaks through the silence. He looks up from where he's slumped in the plush armchair, surrounded by bookshelves towering over them.

Kyoka's presence is a rare comfort. He hasn't seen her much lately, and the guilt gnawed at him. Browsing through books together feels like a small but meaningful way to make amends.

"It's not often I have someone to come with me," he admits, a smile tugging at his lips. Pushing himself up, he strolls over to her side, determined to make the most of this time. "Any recommendations? I could use some help finding something worthwhile."
