It’s too much, all that she’s feeling. It’s unbearable.

He doesn’t even flinch when she pounces onto him; some vicious and ugly part of her wanted him to, but he must’ve been seconds away from reaching for her himself, cause his hands pull her towards him the second she takes a step closer.

Thank you! Sorry to be late answering but I hope you also had a happy Thanksgiving/Thursday.

As to recs— well, I am waiting to travel so I will try to keep things brief. Reylo favorites: Tactical Surrender by @destiniesfic has A+ action and very faithful characterization, as well as very fun OCs and excellent chapter structure. the Sword of Prince Hector by @englishable brings to the surface and wrestles with some of the latent moral questions of Star Wars as well as larger questions of punitive justice and atonement. (Their modern AU, Janus, is also what brought me around to modern AUs in general.) @again-pls has an unfinished canonverse AU, Ego Eris, that is wonderfully light on its feet and has some of the best depictions of the Force I’ve seen. (I don’t believe there are currently plans to finish it, but it remains a very enjoyable reading experience and there are elements of this fic I have genuinely mistaken for canon.) Take Me by @slipgoingunder makes excellent use of country music, both lyrically and as a scene, to create an immersive AU. Honestly, the reylo fanfic pool is so enormous that sheer numbers dictate an excess of writing talent. I do recommend bookmark-hopping over sorting-by-kudos for finding what you want.

In Six of Crows, I must of course immediately mention @whatanybodygets; I was slow getting to Adagio but now I blab about it to people who aren’t even in the fandom, and save the undone years is also absolutely smashing and makes me weep. (I also really like how the AU translation of Inej’s relationship with Heleen focuses on sexual control as the violation of autonomy.) @darol’s The DeKappel Heist (and other tales) does a truly delightful job of reminding us that Kaz and Inej are streetwise, savvy, talented, and also idiot fucking teenagers, god bless. @rainstormdragon has many excellent fics but I will call out in particular Wraith, which looks directly at the ugliness of the violence that Kaz and Inej inflict and throws it into relief by changing the balance. There are a number of fics by @alltheworldsinmyhead expressly designed to fuck you up but I’m very partial to pour away the ocean. Often fanfic relationships can find themselves falling into preset lines of behavior and reaction, and I love the rawness of Inej’s jealousy. I could go on, but I’ll just wrap up with @pyrrhlc’s fic hybrid signal, which features some wildly inventive and evocative magic, and a Kaz who can have his feathers stroked.

I don’t know why Tumblr won’t let me add the Tactical Surrender link! But I hope you find some good reads, and I’m sorry if you’ve already read all this; it’s kind of just what was top of mind.

Saw this pic of nurse and soldier actually months ago in May and decided to draw it after beautiful chapter 2. Let's ignore that Kaz is supposed to be in pajamas. He looks great in uniform.

Incredible Prose, set in more or less canonverse:

a tall ship, and a star to steer her by, by @whatanybodygets (whitherward on ao3): Gorgeous prose and complicated emotions. Inej goes to sea and it's everything she wants and nothing like she expects.

roomy, and drenched in sunlight, also by @whatanybodygets. Inej and Kaz have a baby, but this isn't your niece's babyfic. Complicated, ugly, beautiful, these two fucking morons cannot talk to each other to save their lives.

Stories About Crows, by @marycontraire: A series that is by turns fun, touching, silly, heartbreaking, and realistic. Mary understands the importance of water rights and has a brilliant mind for looking at the shit that Leigh Bardugo made up and taking it to its logical conclusion. Top notch worldbuilding, fab writing.

Service Work, by @linearao3: LinearA's filthy (affectionate), kinky, and gorgeous series, in which she tricks her readers into caring deeply about her beautifully researched fake linguistics. Come for the porn, stay for the fake linguistics and gorgeous prose.

Alternate Universes: I don't know why I find these characters so compelling in AUs, which are not typically my thing, but in looking over my bookmarks, I have a ton of them saved.

save the undone years, by @whatanybodygets (again): Look, just read everything whitherward's written. But this is a WWI battlefield hospital AU and it just hits. It's honestly one of the best things I've read in the fandom.

Murder Ballad and Child Ballad, @linearao3: LinearA's filthy and touching a/b/o series, in which she looked at all of the most interesting parts of a/b/o dynamics, stuck it in the Grishaverse, and world-built like her life depended on it. Want to know what the economics of Ketterdam might look like in between the breeding kink? She's got you covered.

Latte Art, by @pyrrhlc: A coffee shop AU with teeth and one of the few written by someone with barista experience (Kaz spends a shocking, but realistic amount of time doing inventory). The whole series is fun, surprisingly high stakes in places, and one of my favorite modern AUs.

The Four Seasons, by @totchipanda: Slooooooow burn fake dating modern AU done well. Unfinished, but I happen to know that Totchi is still actively working on it. It's by turns a fun romp and an interesting take on modern AUs.

all these hours between us, by CoralAcacia: A college hacker AU, single chapter, but I return to this embarrassingly often. It's well written and nicely poignant in the insane pining.

I just finished @heliocharis's “Part Man, Part Myth, Part Time” about a drinking session between Kaz Brekker and Nikolai Lantsov. Her writing is sly and evocative, and it’s such fun to read these two characters verbally sparring and trying to get the best of each other. It’s a gem of a fic.

From @cameliawrites's “in hope, yours,” a gorgeous historical AU (which is itself inspired by @whatanybodygets's equally stellar “save the undone years”): “What really matters to Inej is that her children will grow up among other children, not amidst the wreckage and ruin of their parents’ war. Here, hundreds of young couples just like she and Kaz are stepping off steamships every day, tired and hungry, limbs heavy with exhaustion—but they’re also hungry for something different; their hearts heavy with hope.”

That mingled feeling of exhaustion and yearning is so real, and the phrase “their hearts heavy with hope” absolutely kills me.

🥰 what tropes do you gravitate toward?

I am an absolute sucker for “There’s only one bed.” There are so many fun and interesting ways to play with it. And I don’t know if they’re tropes exactly, but I love messiness and miscommunication and angst with a happy ending. I am also very close to my own brother, and I am weak for fiction about sibling relationships—that mix of deep love and deep exasperation and shared knowledge and (sometimes unwilling) devotion that siblings have gets me every single time.

I thought I'd never see

Inspired by the breathtaking fic save the undone years by Whitherward @whatanybodygets which is an AU about Kaz and Inej during WW1 where Kaz is a soldier and Inej is a nurse. This moment that stuck with me:

“All this waiting, and his brother appears at his bedside like a ghost in the night. [...] [Captain Reitveld] simply drops onto the edge of Kaz’s mattress and yanks him forward by the shoulders, wrapping him into a tight hug.

She sees Kaz go tense for a moment, and then relax, bury his face into his brother’s shoulder.

And then he begins to sob."

Been working on this for a month. I can't put into words how beautiful of a writer she is. I am always in awe and must drop everything for it.

Can you help me find a fic? I’ve read it a lifetime ago but it lives rent free in my mind. One is that Inej is a ballerina and she ends ups killing someone and Kaz comes and help. The other one is a fic where Inej and Kaz go to Ravka to visit her parents and Kaz pretends he doesn’t know Ravkan and I remember something about a festival or celebration happening

I think the first fic you're referring to is Adagio by @whatanybodygets - so good.

I'm not sure about the second one though!

Dancing together, his hand on her waist, her hand on his shoulder. Their face leaned towards each other like the flower and the sun. He says something, loose curls falling onto his forehead, and she laughs, throwing her head back. Kaz can see how Jordie, emboldened, lays his hand flat on the small of her back then, how he presses her closer to him. And how she lets him. She raises on her tip-toes and her fingers curl around his as he leads her through the dance. One dance, another. One more.
