Cold Boys on Game Shows!
We’ve all seen The Great White Silence and Frederick Cook’s starring role. Even Roald Amundsen got into the movie business. But did you know that a couple of Cold Boys lived long enough to appear on TV?
First, we have Peter Freuchen on the quiz show, The $64,000 Question, in 1956. Note how the questions are relevant to his adventurous life, and that he absolutely crushes it. What a legend!

Next up is the December 22, 1957 episode of What’s My Line? On this show, the four celebrity panelists try to guess what contestants do for work—their “line.” The first contestant is John Tuck, Jr, a U.S. Navy Lieutenant who commanded an American base at the South Pole established during the International Geophysical Year that began in 1957. His occupation is quickly identified (not before he endures a few jokes about his impressive beard!) by guest panelist Robert Preston, who, at the time of this broadcast, had just begun starring on Broadway as the most Fred Cook-coded character in all of American theater, Harold Hill from The Music Man.
(Side note: I highly recommend checking out more What’s My Line? The show ran on CBS from 1950-1967, and it’s like watching a time capsule of a transformative period in American history. It has everything—the popular culture, politics, social mores, fashions, etc. of the era, for better and for worse. All of the surviving episodes are up on YouTube, including this one with a pre-fame Colonel Sanders as one of the guests.)

On the July 28, 1959 broadcast of To Tell the Truth, the four celebrity panelists had to deduce, through a series of questions, which of three men before them was the real Sir Edmund Hillary, climber of Mount Everest. (Hint: he’s number 3!)
youtube
Sir Edmund Hillary appears again on What’s My Line? on May 20, 1962. Each episode had at least one celebrity Mystery Guest, whose identity the blindfolded panel had to determine. Hillary is the first of two Mystery Guests on this episode. The other is Diahann Carroll.
youtube
Finally, we return to To Tell the Truth. Legendary mountaineer Tenzing Norgay was, along with Hillary, one of the first people confirmed to have reached the top of Mount Everest. Will the real Tenzing Norgay please stand up? (Hint: he’s number 1!)

Looking respectfully
(EDIT: fellas, it’s really not that deep. Anyone starting beef over this stupid drawing getting blocked, i dont care to argue with people who come and judge me (a stranger) in bad faith. A bit dissapointed that this joke post is what’s getting the most attention but alas that’s the internet for ya i guess.)
