analysing the martials arts of Jujutsu Kaisen - Karate

Suguru Geto

watching him fight makes my mouth water. every move is so perfect, so textbook, so nerdy almost. he STUDIED pure Shotokan karate. when he punches its the right target from the right distance at the right power at the right speed i wanna melt. the ease with which he shifts from blocking to grappling to close handed strikes. the scene of his beating up the old man in hidden inventory is pure orgasmic karate perfection.

he's super confident when he fights. he puts power in his punches (just the prescribed textbook amount). princess doesn't even tie his magnificent hair up (???).

he's very consistently aggressive. unlike karate, he has the boxing spirit where there's no gap between attacks, no hit-and-run. his attacks end when the opponent does.

god his stances, im drowning its so perfect. when panda is tossing his around in jjk 0 he's alwasy landing in the correct kumite postion, feet parallel and shoulder distance apart, knees only slightly bent.

usage of weaponry is uncommon in karate, but he's adept at it. the Playful Cloud, sanjigun (three sectioned staff) is an insane weapon tbh. if u look at it as a more complex nanchaku (which was my first reaction and mostly how todo uses it) its not that useful, as explained very well here. geto uses it more like a super flexible staff, which is really innovative and gets better use out of it as both a defensive and offensive weapon. but the one person who defo uses Playful Cloud best is Toji.

if i have to summarize, i'd say he fights cleanly. he knows he has both the height and weight advantage on yuta and uses both as full body strikes from "above". plus he's surprisingly flexible even in those flowy ass robes. he knows what works for him, he's done it for a longgg time (those reflexes take years to come) and he does it well. he keeps it short-range. he's a monster in combat.

surprisingly he's not particularly using any grappling techniques, even though he that would give him an easy edge over yuta. maybe yuta's hard to grapple, maybe gege akutami didn't think of it.

if i had to point out any flaws, i'd say he doesn't bend his lower back and hips enough to break falls. its a very minor complaint tho, he's delicious as a martial artist. a big issue is that he clearly doesn't lose much and hence doesn't know when to stop and change strategies. like, his fighting is on reflex, not because he's thinking thru each of his moves. but ig that's more of a personality flaw than a combat issue.

Noritoshi Kamo

it's very funny, he uses an old-fashioned traditional style in a very spunky rebellious way. definitely karate based on the prominence of upper body strikes over kicks, the open handed strikes and punches and that definitive teisho-uchi (palm heel strike). Even though Shotokan karate is more popular, he's practising the Shitorio style. we can tell cuz his stances are more upright, the way he prefers to hit fewer strikes with more powers than bombard his opponent with many strikes of lesser power, and his constantly-changing-his-base-position footwork.

when striking, he uses exclusively 'hard' techniques, as in he's sparring earthbender style, not airbender style. he's going for full frontal attacks and he's putting a shit ton of power behind them, which means he either doesn't expect to get blocked or he's not expecting the opponent's block to be very effective. (if u hit proper fucking hard with no gloves and get blocked hard ur hands will hurt like hell and uv wasted all the power and movement).

however, in general he does use a lot of "soft techniques" otherwise, grabbing megumi's tonfas away mid fight. he also just dodges attacks, only using blocks to create an opening for him to attack. irl, most combat happens in very short range so blocking is easier to dodging. but kamo fights mostly long distance, very typical karate hit-and-run type technique, where u do a few attacks and immeditealy create distance. a good technique considering his tall height. this is also why i think its Shitorio karate instead of kyokushin (which is tougher and keep-hitting-them style and lots of shin kicks).

there's no flashy moves like toji or even geto or yuji. kamo uses the most basic and actually practical moves. even though his strength is a given with Flowing Red Scale enhancing him, by the way he shifts his weight, you can tell that he knows how to turn his speed into momentum to create a shit ton of force. I wouldn't like to get punched by him.

as i mentioned, he's using orthodox styles in his own way. his stances aren't textbook correct, like geto, he's just doing what feels stable to him at the moment. he twists his palm heel strike unlike the common finger-up version. he doesn't move his eye before his head, he turns his whole damn head fully. he's sort of going with the flow, a bit too loosely for a traditionalist.

what confuses me is that he's not using himself to the fullest. at 5'10, he's taller than most people, so why not 1. attack from "above" such as overhead and on-shoulder strikes and 2. fucking use your damn kicks man. specially 'kick down'- the kicks that start above the opponents head and end up pushing them to the ground.

in the anime fight, he's deliberately trying his best to not hurt megumi. the entire fight is really short, but he's doing his best to just disarm and not to injure even a little. he's taller and megumi's head is wide open. the heavy tonfas by his side that makes it harder for megumi to block his face than torso... kamo literally punch his face. im dying here tbh. kamo punch his head. even if he blocks his face ull get a second where his eyesight is completely blocked and that's all u need to hit him in the kidneys or spleen. bam fight over. but noooo he's hitting him in the middle of the chest (twice! vary ur target positions to keep the element of surprise!) like what r u doing my man. it's like he want his attacks to be blocked. he fights like he's only 80% committed to it. i'd call him confused but very very talented.

You let out a surprised yelp, but he hasn't even been to the conference yet! How could he just travel back just like that?

If you wanna know how it's going in Florida as a trans person: we have 3 very scary bills proposed (SB1674, HB1421, SB254) which stand to block - for adults - insurance coverage, bathroom access, and possibly even most transition care itself (not a ban, but still effectively one due to a whole slew of restrictions, including to telemed).

Crow and I had planned on moving to CT before the presidential election, but I needed to figure out an emergency timeline if a bill blocks access to my HRT and I can't find another local provider.

So, I made a spreadsheet of when emergencies could trigger and when I might need to stretch my T stash out while I flee Florida. Worst case: a bill immediately goes into law the day I pick up my next refill and I get denied. (Remember, testosterone is a controlled substance and it is a felony if I try to DIY.)

Every time I pick up my testosterone Rx, I can shift this emergency date further into the future. And if the bad bills fail, this emergency scenario goes away.

But looking at my closest "get the hell outta Dodge" date made me realize I need to step up on packing things I know can sit in storage for a while. Hence, all the bins.

Prepare for the worst, hope for the best.

HAHA we were just talking about this so ofc! i started writing it months ago, but lately i've revisited it to flesh out the story a lil bit.

let me set the scene: jack is a 7th grade english teacher working on his first Big Project (either a novel or a play - i'm between the two rn, but i'm leaning towards play) that he's....kinda stuck on. he doesn't love being a teacher either, just sees it as a temporary job til he gets published (can u see the incoming character arc? lol)

so, he's a bit lost. he's got his best friend trevor (who teaches 8th grade science), and he's got his brother/roommate luke (who pays the majority of the rent w his swanky ahl contract), but that's it.

until he meets nico at the bar one night, who's new in town (and also hot and mysterious). and wow! jack finally has a life outside of school....a way to separate his work/home life and a chance at love!

until he shows up on monday and sees that nico is the newest gym teacher lol. cue hilarity and nico trying to seduce jack in the broom closet. jack has to reassess the way he separates his personal and work life and how they intersect - and fall in love in the process ofc.

it's very much a rom-com but i wanna explore jack's identity as a writer and teacher, and give him some room to figure himself out :) i just finished Writers & Lovers by Lily King (highly recommend!!!), which is major inspo for this new direction.

Jack’s hand is tracing patterns on Nico’s quad—this man has to work out. He wonders what he does for work. Construction, maybe? He never did mention, but then again, neither did Jack.

“Do you have a bed?” he asks. His hand crawls towards Nico’s inner thigh and he hears a sharp intake of breath.

“Sounds suitably furnished to me.”

They’re on each other as soon as Nico’s front door closes, greedy hands finding purchase on any pull of fabric or strip of skin they can find. Nico’s like a magnet—or a planet, pulling Jack in to orbit around him. Jack surrenders to it easily, and he doesn’t give himself time to even worry he’s being too needy about it.

It takes them a while to get through the small apartment, pushing each other up against walls or furniture to make out some more, Nico getting distracted by Jack’s wandering hands and Jack getting distracted by Nico mouthing marks that will definitely bruise along his jaw. Thank God it isn’t a school night; his students would have a field day with that one.

Blissful, adrenaline-fueled minutes elapse over Jack, and he doesn’t even register they’ve gotten to Nico’s bedroom until the backs of his knees bump against his bed and he goes tumbling backwards with a surprised yelp. Nico tumbles with him, shifting his weight so he doesn't crush him. He’s chuckling into Jack’s neck, and the sound vibrates through his head, swimming alongside the subtle buzz from the gimlets and Jack’s own desire, burning like an uncovered flame with an endless supply of oxygen.

Nico leans back, his hair thoroughly mussed from Jack’s fingers raking through it. A sliver of moonlight from the window illuminates his beautiful face.

“What do you want, Jack?” he asks, voice barely above a whisper. He sounds like he’d do absolutely anything Jack would ask him to.

Greetings and Salutations, everyone! Allow me to properly introduce myself.

My name is Zeisty King — aka the random individual behind this silly little blog! I mainly go by just Zeisty, though (seeing as I treat the "King" part as a surname).

My main goal for this blog is to doodle Siffrin from In Stars and Time (as well as other characters sometimes) so I can get used to a new tablet and set up, while also having fun with it!! Hence why I named this blog the way I did and why I don't mind calling the art I post here "messy," especially considering half of them are sketches anyway!

Hello, and welcome to my general roleplay information post! I'll be honest and say I got the idea for this from someone on reddit, so if this seems familiar, that's probably why.

Also, I'm super new to Tumblr. So please bear with me! I've been lurking for a bit, but if my formatting is weird or anything, that's probably why.

You are most likely wondering about a specific topic about me. Hence why this post has been split into different ‘chapters’ for you to go to at your leisure, below is the table of contents. Enjoy!

**CHAPTER ONE : ABOUT ME (THE WRITER)**

I know not many people on in the Roleplaying community care about the writer, and only about what the writer can give them, so let me make this quick.

1. I care about my fellow writers, so if your not enjoying the roleplay, I’m not enjoying the roleplay. You wanna stop the roleplay or take a break? PLEASE, please, let me know. I will not be offended or impatient. I’m always ready to discuss what we can do to improve and what’s next on the literature chopping block.

2. I get busy sometimes, just like everyone else. But I'm usually able to check in at least once per day. And whenever I'm not going to be available, I will always give a heads up. All I ask is the same in return. Thanks!

3. I’m quite a friendly person if you have problems with pet names (My mom was southern so I tend to call people sweetie, hun etc.), then please tell me so I don’t make you uncomfortable! If I don’t know about the problem, then how do you expect me to fix it?

4. I don’t like getting ghosted. Who does? But I may @ you once per day to see if you're free to roleplay! (Obviously, if I’m informed about you being busy, then you won’t receive a @ asking if you are or aren’t!)

5. I do both NSFW and SFW roleplays! I like a roleplay that’s story focused with smut. If you want 100% smut, then I’m not the partner for you! My ideal balance is about 80% story 20% smut, but I'm willing to go up to 50/50. Fade to black smut scenes are also welcome!

6. Grammar and spelling mean a ton to me! And because I roleplay on Discord, there is always the option to edit posts. Please use that feature!

7. Please provide detail! I have literally gotten this response, and yes it was the whole response. "[Male Character] does some things." And I can't do anything with that at all. If you can, I applaud you. I want to write an amazing plot with you! I want to worldbuild with you!

8. And about worldbuilding, I love it when there are more than just two characters! I'm more than happy to play side characters, and you're also welcome to create and play some as well. We can decide how to divide them up but usually I like to play the ones I create and you play the ones you create, but I'm cool with dividing it up other ways as well, we just have to talk about it first.

9. I usually play Female main characters, and I prefer if my partner will play Male main characters. Side characters can be whatever gender, I don't care that much.

**CHAPTER TWO : RULES FOR ROLEPLAYING**

I’ve only got a few important rules, so listen up!

1. Match how much I write, or write more. If you write more, I’ll attempt to match you instead! I don’t like there being an imbalance of effort when it comes to writing. As roleplay is my hobby!

2. Discord is required, you don’t have it? Get it or get lost! (Seriously though, it’s the most organized platform for roleplay!) But you can certainly reach out here before moving to Discord if that would make you more comfortable.

3. 18+ Only! I will not play with anyone underage for any reason! Even if all the smut is fade to black or there is no smut! 21+ preferred.

4. No ghosting, if you're not interested in the roleplay just tell me and we can get started on one of two things. A) a new roleplay, or B) the parting of ways. I’d rather we leave on a good note instead of with bad tastes in either mouth!

5. While being friendly in OOC chat is great and encouraged, FLIRTING IS NOT! I am not here to be in a relationship with you. I'm here to write about a fictional relationship between 2 fictional people.

To summarize, please match or exceed what I’m putting down, Discord Only, 18+ Only, No Ghosting, and No Flirting! Got it? Cool!

Final note, a reminder that I roleplay for fun. If I’m not having fun then I will say so, then we can discuss a new roleplay or we can part ways as mature adults.

I don't usually like to play canon characters, but I am more than okay with it if you want to. There are a select few characters I will play from a few fandoms, so feel free to ask.

because the internet is the way it is, getting “hate” online has never really bothered me since i’ve always been a person with a large enough platform for years. it’s very easy for me to ignore and block and never answer whoever has decided to send some worthless hate message. which is probably why i almost never get hate anymore but it does happen occasionally. this was different since it wasn’t an attack on me per se, more so someone trying to admonish me for having a fair reaction towards something offensive. so i’m here to tell you it’s alright to treat strangers on the internet as strangers. you’re allowed to reinforce boundaries. you’re allowed to tell people you do not appreciate their actions towards you, and don’t leave room for argument. i am a very direct person, which means i told that person firmly that they needed to delete that ai chat bot they made of my au without my consent. and i did it without remorse. and i was told “it wasn’t that deep.” well it was. and it is. it is that deep because it’s deep to me, and i know it’s something that happens to others and it is that deep to them too. so what’s the problem in it being that deep? there is none :) let things be deep. be sincere. it is very important.

also if you make ai chat bots without creator’s consent when using their content you’re a piece of shit and doing a disservice to the very person you’re trying to exalt. take a step back and reevaluate how ai harms your interests rather than progresses them as well as the creators you claim your respect and cherish. you’re a victim of propaganda, my friend! and i prolly wouldn’t have made this post if anon hadn’t said anything. so maybe they should’ve kept their mouth shut since they didn’t wanna see shit like this so bad lmfao

(I can't believe I have to make another post about this because I wanna let this stupid shit go but grown adults are sending me bullshit about things I apparently still haven't cleared up so HERE YOU FUCKING GO, STOP SENDING THREATS NOW, THANKS!)

Admittedly still bugs me how some of you claim I blew it out of proportion lol. The fandom is very well known to have been uncomfortable or even feel triggered by the proposed concept (not saying what it is because I really don't wanna talk about it further, it's over now!) so to say I, someone who tried to just keep the conversation restricted to their comments and 100% would've just been okay if they removed the post knowing how it came off to the fandom, blew it out of proportion... Eugh. I get it, it's not technically illegal (albeit does mirror real life crimes.) But I think me making a post addressing it for the majority of the fandom who would feel extremely uncomfortable seeing it if they found it in the tags themselves isn't "blowing it out of proportion". The pairing *bordered* extremely immoral things. And regardless of what you think of consent ages and what-not, I'm sure it should be obvious why I'd want to warn the majority of a fandom who is known to be uncomfortable or triggered with this concept about the concept being proposed in the tags. The fact that the only thing making it "moral" is the fact that they were aged up should understandably make MANY people feel extremely uncomfortable. And the fact that someone would want to alert the fandom to protect anyone who may be reminded of real life cases so they can block the user shouldn't be seen as something blown out of proportion. I don't wanna engage with the person or anyone in support of this pairing but the fact you guys believe I wanted anything done to them for their concept is weird as fuck. I want to keep this fandom, known to feel reasonable discomfort with the pairing, away from the content that would make them feel horrible.

The word "pedophilic", whether you believe it or not, would go with the pairing if it weren't for that single "aged up" thing. And that's what got a lot of people feeling extremely uncomfortable. Hence my usage of the word (to describe the pairing - not the PERSON WHO POSTED IT, for those of you who're illiterate and claim I called them that.)

I don't even wanna be saying this but there's grown ass adults still sending me nasty stuff in their defense. I guess that's what I get for DARING to say anything about an account with more popularity than me. I genuinely don't give a fuck about what they (person who posted it) do from here. I don't want to invade on them and you guys should rightfully have the same ideas about me, but holy shit... Grown ass ADULTS. ARE SENDING ME INSULTS AND THREATS. Calm the fuck down. Harassment Allegations ;;

In all of my years of writing, I’ve never been accused of harassing someone before.

I’ve received around 3 anons in total in regards to the harassment of another Stolas rper named Stols.

First, I’ve never written with this individual before and we’ve never met nor spoken with each other.

Secondly, I hardblocked this person first and never had access to be able to send such messages in general. Additionally, I’m hardblocked on their end as well, it’s a mutual block on both sides.

Thirdly, the wording doesn’t line up with how I write in general when phrased in a “mean” context. I’m big on checking spelling errors, I’ve emphasized that individuals can receive help in private spaces/conversations (in general) and that it’s not a “no one can help you” type of situation, and I wouldn’t call someone a “fake ass bitch” on anon I would do it right to their face. Anyone who knows me well enough could tell you that.

Lastly, the contexts for my posts were geared towards a friend of mine being taunted on Discord and the other dealing with the anon hate that @goetiiaprince received. Why would I go out of my way to send another Stolas writer anon hate when I’m actively defending another?

Unfortunately, I don’t know what else to say in response to these outside of those who wanna believe that I sent them are going to. I’m not able to stop you from believing that, I’ve accepted it. Unless Stols actively does an IP trace on the anons, then there’s no irrefutable proof that states otherwise.

However, plenty of community members can vouch for me as someone who’s not the type to send harassment or hate towards someone— hence why I’ve had Stols blocked for sometime.

I’m not apologizing for the posts I’ve made on the situations where I’m providing context, but please don’t send that person hate mail. Seriously, leave them be. And to the anon who worded your arguments as me ; I’ll return the glorious fuck you right back at you.

I’m not getting involved in some petty ass drama because of someone trying to frame me for defending my mutuals and friends publicly. ONE

I've been working on this collaborative project with some online... "friends" to some extent for about 2 months now. The deadline for my portion was mid-August. I am going on vacation this Saturday, I'm going to see Sarah Squirm 3 hours away on the 21st, and my irl friends who were involved in my portion return to school on the 19th. Naturally, I filmed it in early July and turned my cut in on the 19th A FULL MONTH BEFORE THE DEADLINE, AND BEFORE MY FRIENDS GO BACK TO SCHOOL. After several days, my "producers" (who aren't fucking paying me, this is a passion project. I don't think they should be using that title.) Finally said "Hey, we like your cut, but we have some small advice," and promised to get me on a call that week. It's been 10 days. I have *almost* no time to do reshoots, and I'll probably have to re-edit WHILE I'M AT THE BEACH, FOR A PROJECT I'M NOT BEING PAID FOR. And my cut is fine. I don't mind changing things, and it's not great (but at least on par with most of what they've done before...) but it's not so heinously bad that it *has* to be "fixed." I have told them my timeline, several times. There are likely to be continuity issues because it's 19 DAYS SINCE I FILMED ANYTHING AND MY HAIR GROWS FAST. Based on the little they've said, the pacing is gonna be FUCKED after I "fix" it. I'm so upset because I have historically liked these guys before, and I never wanna talk to them again at this point. Not to mention, I *HATE* dragging my real friends into this. They don't deserve it. They also aren't being paid. Very disenchanted by this whole thing. Like it's been so long that I consider the project finished. They are asking me to drag out a corpse and give it a makeover. AND I HAVE OTHER SHIT I WANNA GET STARTED ON BUT I'M STUCK IN THIS GODDAMN PURGATORY. Supposedly, they're gonna call this evening but idk how that's gonna go.

I had this friend. About 3 years ago, she reached the conclusion that I was obsessed with her and ended our friendship. Maybe she was right. I had a crush, sure, but what's obsessed? Maybe I'm just too autistic to know where the line is drawn as far as "feelings" go, beats the fuck outta me. It was early July, so naturally this is really the only time of year I think about her anymore. Besides passing references, simply because I refuse to gadlight myself into forgetting the good memories she just so happens to be in. This makes everyone around me uncomfortable, and they refuse to humor conversations the moment her name comes up. Hence why I have to talk about this here. I'm over her, but I miss talking to her every once in a while. She's cool. I have no idea what she thinks of me these days, thus, a problem arises. My friend & his boyfriend (the irl friends from the previous story) are moving back to the city she lives in within the year, and I'll return to my tradition of visiting them about once a month. Here's the thing: I feel antagonized in that city. Like I'm under constant surveillance by some secret society waiting for a perfect moment to hurt me (emotionally that is, this isn't like... extreme paranoia talking.) And thus, this is no longer an early July funk. She's on my mind a lot. I wish I could just walk up to her (or even message her, I'm still blocked) and be like "I'm coming to this city again. Once a month. We've gotta either hash this shit out, or agree to fully ignore each other in the event we encounter each other in public." But honestly, I just wish I could forget it. I wanna stop thinking about her, and being sad, and occasionally seeing her in dreams. I'd love to never have to think about her again, but my personality simply doesn't allow.

So also my grandpa died last year and his birthday is in July, so that's not been helping. Sometimes I'm a little overwhelmed by my friends because now that they know I'm never busy, they sometimes spontaneously ask me to hang out all day and that can be a lot. I'm also in the process of moving which is stressful enough, but I hate my current living situation so I wish I could just do it but honestly I don't expect to be in the new place by the end of the year.

Anyway, I like to drink liquor and all this shit is starting to make that a minor problem 👍

Pasentadernic: An aldernic term for when wants or has a body with a skin tone that can be described as pastel or light. Pasentadernic includes any color from white to light gray, and to any light non-vivid color.

Viventadernic: An aldernic term for when wants or has a body with a skin tone that can be described as neutral or vivid. Viventadernic includes any color from to any light gray to dark gray, and to any non-pastel and non-dark color.

Darentadernic: An aldernic term for when wants or has a body with a skin tone that can be described as dark or muted. Darentadernic includes any color from dark gray to black, and to any dark non-vivid color.

These terms do include colors already found naturally in human skin since human skin is naturally anywhere from very dark brown to pinkish (just as a generalization). One could choose to describe their current physical body with these terms if one wants, these terms were coined to be deliberately broad in their definitions.

These terms were mostly coined with alterhumans and system members in mind, provided one has skin or something that is basically the equivalent of skin. "Skin" here is a broad term. (Essentially anything that's not liquid, scales, feathers, fur, etc.)

There's no concrete line between what colors are defined as pastel, neutral or dark, so it really depends on one's own personal perception on what colors are what if one's trying to decide if the color is light or neutral.

I mostly coined these for myself since I'm a shapeshifter but two of my forms I can remember have pure white skin while the other has black skin. Well technically I don't have skin but it's the closest human word. One of my headmates also as brown skin and it'd be nice to have a term for her since her inner world body sure as hell doesn't match this flesh capsule.

I'll probably coin a term for being fluid between colors or these terms.

The flags include the gradients on the sides for nonhuman skin tones, the horizontal stripes are just colors I felt were important to note since these terms technically include human skin tones, and it's hard to blend brown and gray into a rainbow color palette, especially pastels. Hence why there's the small stripes for black and white as well for the light and dark versions. I just needed a good way to add a rainbow gradient without inducing eye strain due to the stripes being very similar tint/tone/shade-wise. This is just what I came up with. (The other alternatives would've just had way to many stripes and color variance for what I wanted to go for.)

These terms exist to describe a color one has or wants as the color of their skin or whatever equivalent of skin one has. Whether one is using the terms to describe their inner world body or outer world body or as a want/have is none of my business. I just coined these to fill a blank in my experience.

So, as a fellow author but not a writer of smut, I'd love to know how you approach writing sex scenes. I've only ever written 2, and neither are very graphic. I struggle so much trying to find an engaging way to block the characters and follow the action in such a way that doesn't drag down the pacing and/or just come out super cumbersome, so I wanted to ask you.

For All the Wrong Reasons has (no exaggeration) masterful sex scenes, both because they're smoking (lol) and because they do so much work in the story still—like they're not at all superfluous. So yeah! I would love to get some insight into your process/approach.

Oooh! Thanks for asking <3 Funnily enough, FATWR's starts off with literally the second sex scene I'd ever written in my whole life, so I feel like I've learned a lot as the fic progressed.

I'll get to pacing and action in a moment, but to start: the most important thing is why are they having sex right now. I do really enjoy smut scenes, but there are so many that are superfluous, even intentionally so, and I think that's probably the first mistake people make.

In a relationship, having sex for the first time (or in general) can both be a big deal but it's also an excellent barometer of what's going on in the relationship itself: people are more honest, more vulnerable, and the things they do (or conversely don't do) can say so much about them. There's a tendency nowadays to pretend that sex scenes don't add anything to a story, that they're purely for a vaguely pornographic, misogynistic, "male gaze"-y purpose and therefor "bad/unethical", or they're made deliberately superfluous so they can be skipped (for commercial release, to lower the rating, to let sex-averse or underage readers skip without missing the plot) that I think people overall have absorbed this notion that sex scenes in general are pointless - and that's false. Sex scenes and smut are great opportunities for character development!!!

Ok, so, I'll be using Tav as the example because you're familiar with her and the fic overall. Tav's a very sexual person who has repressed that for some time, so when she decides to go for Astarion, a lot of repressed desires bubble to the surface. Sex is her main way of connecting with people: she wants sex when she wants to connect more deeply, and struggles when Astarion wants to take a step back because it feels like a rejection of intimacy and the building relationship. But because sex is so tied to power with her, she also wants to have sex when she feels the need to clarify the power dynamics between them (hence the gauntlet of Shar scene, and why she choose certain acts as well). A character without such a fucked up/power-driven backstory is probably not gonna wanna bang every time their partner disagrees with them. Some characters might want to bang after an action sequences; others might want some physical comfort only once they're safe and secure at home. Tav would fuck in a hallway: Astarion hits on her once safe within her house. It needs to make sense for the moment and the events that lead them there.

Smut also needs to serve a point. Some plot point or character development needs to be made, otherwise it is superfluous. All the smut in FATWR either reveals something about Tav's past (via her reactions) or is a breakthrough in terms of what Astarion is willing to put up with and/or how much Tav decides to push him. If the scene can be skipped - if any scene can be skipped - you should probably cut it.

Onto the smut itself: the things characters are into (or not into) needs to make sense. It's infuriating when people write characters that are people in the book, but once their clothes come off they suddenly degrade into bioessentialist "male/female" puppets that act out some boring heteronormative fantasy sex, which is especially egregious in same sex couples where authors go "but who's the lady, though?" Everyone has sex differently, but honestly, it's probably gonna be pretty in line with who they are as a person in general, especially if we're talking about an older, more self-confident character. Younger people can surprise you - i.e. "super shy girl is actually a secret dominatrix" - but that's a lot less common with older characters as they grow older unless there's some serious outside pressure to keep the freakyness hidden.

Pacing and detail: when people are aroused, they read faster. This makes writing smut a bit different than writing other sections, because in smut, sometimes you actually want to write more than you would otherwise. You want to make it last so they can enjoy it. The readers are reading faster, so feed them more and control their pace that way. Shorter sentences and/or broken sentences are good for climactic scenes, because those speed up the pace again.

Like in real life, the difference between good sex and great sex is the emotion. Definitely keep track of the bodies and the hands - nothing worse that picturing a scene in your head and realizing the character must be twisted up into a pretzel - but the feeling, the emotion, the intimacy is what really matters. Describe enough to titillate and set the scene, but honestly, with less detail, people are going to picture what they want to picture, and it's gonna be hotter than anything you could write anyway because it's straight from their own minds. Some people like a lot of detailed cocks - others think they look like naked mole rats. Can't make them both happy!

Which ties into the most important point of all: Write what gets you (or your character) off. Don't be ashamed, don't pull any punches - commit. Go wild. There's no barrier too far. Reading is all about suspension of disbelief and you as the author need to take people on a journey that you fully 1000% believe in. I read a smut scene once where a girl got off using worms in her vagina. Gross? Yeah. But for the duration of reading it, it was hot, and that's what made it memorable. Delude yourself that you're completely into this one particular thing like your life depends on it, because if you don't think it's hot, then your readers won't either.

Last but not least: Don't be too strict with it. Here's where I made a mistake recently: there was a post going around about Astarion trying weed and having sex while under the influence, and like the rest of us degenerates, I went "oooooh that's hot, yeah, I wanna write that." I'd already decided months ago that there was a blowjob scene going to happen because I wanted to write a blowjob scene, so these two ideas merged into "Astarion tries weed at Tav's house, and gets the best head of his life." Nice, right?

No. This was not easy peasy lemon squeezy, this was lemon fucking difficult. The weed was fine - it made sense for Tav's character, and I lowkey wanted to imply her potions work had a seedier/drug-related side. But she would only smoke if very stressed, and Astarion's a judgemental prick who'd only go for it in certain circumstances. Hence, the Astral-touched tadpole cockblock. Great, now they're high, and Astarion's got the munchies - well, Tav's already down with being bitten all the time, she smoked to get out of her head and enjoys pain for the same reason. Now we're going for a masochistic biting fest with lowered inhibitions, and Astarion, who has not forgotten his intention to seduce her, starts to make some moves.

I wanted to write a blowjob scene because of my oral fixation because I literally never see them in smut. A lot of smut is written by women, for women: blowjobs just feel like work, sometimes, or can be gross if you think dicks look like naked mole rats. A blowjob, for Tav, was always going to feel like work just because of her history, even if she loves Astarion enough she wanted to give him one.

What I wanted to write was a cute sloppy blowjob in the sunlight after smoking a bunch of weed together (that also pointed to Tav's prostitute history). What I got was a violent throatfuck. My "requirements" were too strict, and I contorted the plot to make it work. I am happy with what happened because it pushed the plot forward, so yes, hold your characters over what you think ought to happen - but because I was strict about it, it didn't go the way I planned, and the overall vibe is different than what I wanted. So, really, like with sex in real life: keep it organic. Go with the flow. If you try and force it, it might go directions you don't see coming, for better or for worse, but that's also just writing in general tbh.

....but also have a document of sex scene ideas that sound hot. For inspiration. Yes. You never know when you might need them. 👀
