Spiritual seekers need one another as mirrors. A member of the Hopi nation once asked me about our holy days. I was telling him about Passover, our celebration of freedom, and Sukkot, our Feast of Tabernacles, and how they fit in with the cycles of the year. "I think I get it," he said finally. "You people don't want to be in slavery. And you want to pass this on to your children. But when you tell your kids on Passover, 'We have to go away from here; we can't stay here because it will cost us our freedom,' your kids will say, 'Yeah, but what are we going to eat?' So you teach them how to bake bread on stones, how to roast a lamb if you are hungry, how to find dandelion greens, and so on. When the kids ask, 'But where will we stay?' you show them how to build a lean-to, so they will have somewhere to live." An Indian perspective on the mitzvot to eat the Passover lamb with matzot and bitter herbs and to build a sukkah on Sukkot gave me a completely different insight into my own traditions.

the whole "angels in the bible don't look like that, they actually look like this" thing is beyond exhausted at this point, but i do think it's interesting to consider it from the perspective of an actual angel. imagine being told that this thing which makes your halo crackle and wings bristle from how wrong it is, is you. this twisted mockery, with its wings that don't sit quite right and move in such unnatural ways, and its halo which looks so dull and lifeless and hollow, its flat empty eyes with nothing behind them. the humans have a word for this feeling, "uncanny valley" - that which resembles what you know but which your senses just can't accept as anything but a false mimic, an intruder infiltrating your ranks, threatening to replace you without anyone even noticing your absence - but you have no such concept, only a nameless fear and inexplicable sense of dread.

broke: the doctor having two hearts represents “one being happy, one being sad” (sorry 13. it’s cute but like…)
woke: the doctor having two hearts symbolises the idea that he cares about everything twice as much
bespoke: the doctor has two hearts because, to quote paul cornell writing the shalka doctor, he “doesn’t like the military but has so many friends in it; he says he doesn’t kill but then… exterminates thousands”. always of two minds about any decision, any impossible choice. he’s completely human and completely alien. completely merciful and completely ruthless. contradicts himself constantly. breaks his own rules, sets new ones, repeat. the #1 hypocrite. two hearts like the two guards at the door of that riddle — one always lies, the other always speaks the truth — but not even he remembers which one is which
