#yes orihime!!#omg I wanted this to happen so bad#orihime’s character was bludgeoned in the arrancar arc#she didn’t deserved it
True. This is what'd happen if Orihime's previously established characterization stayed in-tact and the writing was competent.

Ichigo gets a lot of shit (typically from outside of the Bleach fandom) for being a character whose wants/goals never change from beginning to end of his series. He always wants to protect people (and even though I could argue that he went from only wanting to protect those close to him to wanting to protect everyone he can, that's not the point I'm making with this post).
I think a lot of people who only give Bleach a passing glance fail to see Ichigo's true character growth. It's not about what his goals are or who he's trying to protect, but rather, it's about how he achieves it.
Ichigo is very self-sacrificing in the first third of Bleach. He believes that if the mission is successful, then it doesn't matter how broken or close to death he gets. The mission, saving Rukia (and hurting/killing as few people in the process), is all that matters.
Then, when a part of himself (his inner hollow) emerges, and says "hey yeah no, I'm not letting you get yourself killed and I'm also not letting you hold back against your enemy", Ichigo immediately rejects it.
It's not until he defeats his inner Hollow that we see Ichigo really dive into a fight with the intent to kill. The problem is, once his Hollow is defeated, he thinks that's it. He's freed himself of that part of him and he can go back to being self-sacrificing.
We see this throughout the Hueco Mundo arc. It's why saving Orihime parallels saving Rukia. Ichigo naively thinks he can suppress a part of himself. He bottles it up until it explodes, coming back to haunt him in his fight with Ulquiorra, etc. He learns that side of himself isn't so easily tucked away, and if he recklessly endangers himself, he could end up endangering his friends too. At his own hand, no less.
Then Ichigo discovers he can commit the ultimate sacrifice. Final Getsuga Tenshou. He can throw away these powers and the parts of himself that he doesn't like, and he can get rid of Aizen all in one go. He's lucky that it worked, but only because Kisuke was there.
Then, once Ichigo is powerless, he learns that's not what he really wants. Life doesn't "go back to normal". The can is open, and there's danger out there beyond just Aizen. And Ichigo can't do anything to stop it unless he gets his powers back.
So he does. Then he cuts down the threat to his friends and family. And he doesn't hesitate this time. Yes, he still has compassion for his enemies (he even goes to the Soul Society to ask for Ginjo's body so he can give him a proper burial), but he's learned not to hold back and he's learned that new threats will appear and he'd rather have the power to face them head on.
So then comes TYBW, and Ichigo is facing battles head-on without hesitation. He goes straight to the "bad guys" with the intention of cutting them down. He learns the truth about who his Inner Hollow is, and he accepts it. He's even willing to accept whatever consequences may come from training in the Royal Palace and becoming stronger. He accepts his power and potential fully, and learns that he has what it takes to protect his loved ones with his strength, and not with a sacrifice.
Ultimately, he heals the part of himself that thinks his life is worth less than other people's. He heals the part of himself that blames himself for not protecting his mother (when he was 9!! Like come on Isshin, put the kid in therapy!! Anyway...) He grows into someone who knows his self worth. And I think, for me at least, that makes him one of my favourite protagonists of all time. Because can't most of us relate to feeling worthless at times? And don't we also wanna overcome that?
Thanks for reading my ramble lmao, I'm sure this could have been more elegantly written but I'm very sleepy and just wanted to get my thoughts out there.

CW: Yandere behavior, forced imprisonment, brief mentions of NSFW / Non/Con, threats of violence
This is a yandere work. Proceed with caution and please be mindful of your own triggers.
Happy birthday Aizen! I couldn't help but write a short little thing I love him. The Rock Musical is living rent free in my head and has done so since I watched it. The "Smile, Orihime" scene was in it too and I almost fainted seeing that in front of me on stage.
The warmth of the palms of his hands burned through the white silk of the gown you were wearing, placed possessively on your waist.
Aizen was lounging in his throne, you perched uncomfortably on his lap in just the way he liked to have you. There was just something about having your soft, warm body close that stroked his ego just right. It was as much of a display of his power and authority for both the Espada and you alike -- a show of ownership.
Any time Aizen summoned the Espada to a meeting, you would be dragged into his lap, spending the meeting trying not to squirm around as large hands held your waist or fingers traced patterns into your thigh. It was humiliating, but there was nothing you could do to stop it.
Making a scene wasn’t an option anymore. You’d tried to protest the first few times the ruler of Las Noches had forced you to sit in his lap during meetings. He’d been amused, but not at all bothered. A few words whispered into your ear in his smooth, baritone voice had your body freezing as your heartbeat picked up in fear before you reluctantly fell quiet and stopped squirming.
You knew all too well that Aizen made good on his promises and threats. You didn’t want your remaining family to suffer at the hands of Hollows or any of the Espada, nor did you want to spend more nights than you absolutely had to folded into a mating press as fucked you until he was satisfied.
There was no escape from Las Noches, after all. You couldn’t open a portal, and even if you somehow managed to get one of the Espada to open one for you, there was nowhere in the world that you would be able to escape Aizen. All you could do was obey and try to minimise the damage done to yourself or the people you cared about. You were no fighter. You had no powers. There was nothing you could do but let him do as he pleased.
You could feel Aizen’s smile press against the sensitive skin of your neck, no doubt knowing exactly what was on your mind. There was no hiding anything from him. You’d long since stopped trying.
“Feeling powerless, pet?” Aizen mused, ignoring Nnoitora making a jab at Harribel, trying to rile her up.
You didn’t grace him with a response, rebelling in one of the only ways you could. He chuckled, chest rumbling in amusement pressed against your back.
“If anyone, you’re the person with the most power here.” You turned your neck, looking back at Aizen with confusion on your face. He merely smiled.
“You’re the only one who controls my heart.”

Forever your protector,
Word Count: 1,176
Requested: No, personally wanted to write angsty fluff using the phrases: My first instinct is to protect you, no matter the cost. && I never realized how much I needed you until you weren't there.
Summary; You distance yourself from Ichigo in hopes your absence will go unnoticed when you're taken to Hueco Mundo... Ichigo's more perceptive than anyone gives him credit for and rescues both you and Orihime.
CW: implied that reader has been stalked by Aizen; kidnapped to Hueco Mundo; tiny confrontation with Uryu; Ichigo worrying; Ichigo is hurt but what else is new
Tumblr media
Tears streamed down your face as you ran over to him, the man who had come to your rescue despite everything...
You had known that Sosuke Aizen had planned to kidnap you at some point... It was not a matter of if but when.
You had accepted that fact long before it happened...
You had accepted that when you went to help Ichigo rescue Rukia that he would see you... And you already knew whatever he was planning was not good. As soon as he showed his true colors to everyone... you knew it was only a matter of time before he was going to come and find you.
When you returned to the World of the Living, you had said goodbye to Ichigo and his friends, and had made a silent vow to yourself. You didn't want to drag them into anything, so you would begin to distance yourself from the others.
You saw them less and less, you basically dropped off the face of the Earth... However, unlike Rukia, though, you didn't just suddenly disappear from their memories.
It came as no surprise to you when strange hollow like men came to take you. This was the first time you had met any arrancars, and likely the first time they had come over to the World of the Living. You had accepted that this was going to happen and that there was nothing you could do to fight against it.
Fate had a funny way of reminding you of what you had left behind... Orihime at some point had been brought to Hueco Mundo and that was when you knew Ichigo would come to save her.
How would you be able to explain to him just why you were here? What would he say?
... Would he give you that famous scowl and tell you how stupid you had been for running off on your own?
The thought made you giggle to yourself, but it made your heart ache...
────────────────────────────────────
"The hell do you mean you haven't seen them since we got back?!" Ichigo growled as he gripped onto Uryū's shirt, leering down at him.
"I said they haven't been in class or clubs since we got back from the Soul Society. I don't have their number, so I can't contact them... I would think you would've heard from them, Ichigo."
"I..." His grip loosened as he began to think over the days since their return. He remembered saying goodbye to you... He remembered saying he would see you later... And... Then, what? His thoughts were racing through every face he had seen since then and none of them were yours. Not a single one.
"I gotta go," he spat out, letting go of the other's shirt and running off. He had to see you. How did he manage to let the days go past without noticing?! His jaw clenched, hands balling into fists and speeding up into a sprint towards your home. You were okay... You had to be okay.
The thoughts of you being hurt or dead made his chest ache and only made him go faster. Once he arrived, he quickly searched for the spare key you had. In his haste, he nearly dropped it before managing to get it into the key hole and slam open the door. He called out your name, looking everywhere within your home.
He was just overreacting, right? You would be in your room, curled up with your computer or a book and peek your head up at him... Looking confused why he sounded so frantic... Right? You had to. His hand shook as he reached for the doorknob of your bedroom, twisting it and pushing the door open.
But you weren't there.
His lower lip trembled as he looked around your room. The bed was made and honestly it looked like no one had been in there for... Well, it definitely looked like you hadn't been home much since your return. He gritted his teeth and slammed the side of his fist into the door frame.
"Damnit!"
Unfortunately, he didn't have time to even begin thinking about where you could be or what could have happened to you... The arrancars soon came down and he was thoroughly defeated. Then they came back and took Orihime with them.
As he was preparing to head to Hueco Mundo to rescue Orihime, something hit him. He remembered his conversation with Grimmjow during their last interaction.
"Hah! You're so dense, Kurosaki! All these people and none of you even noticed we've already taken one of your pals!"
His eyes grew wide at the realization, feeling like he was hit with a train.
"He wasn't talking about Orihime! Son of a-"
────────────────────────────────────
"You're such an idiot, Ichigo! You didn't have to do that," you sobbed out as you fell into the sands before him. He had gotten badly hurt during his fights... And naturally you blamed yourself.
"Heh, but I did... My first instinct is to protect you, no matter the cost." He explained, smiling up at you as Orihime began to heal him.
"That's stupid and you know it!" You whined out in protest, feeling a bit better now that he was starting to get healed. "I'm not-"
"Hey, none of that. You are such an important person in my life," he spoke softly and reached up to wipe your tears away. "I never realized how much I needed you until you weren't there..."
"D... Don't say weird stuff like that!" You huffed, cheeks growing warm with embarrassment. Despite that, you never tried to move his hand from your cheek.
"I mean it... It took me way too long, but, I love you."
"Y-... You're just dizzy from blood loss! Stop saying weird things when you're so hurt!" You could feel the steam coming out of your ears, heart racing and trying to turn situation to have less of a focus on yourself.
"Hey! I am not! I've been thinking about this since the day I realized you were gone! It's taken me way too long to realize it, but you know me... I'm not always the best with these sorts of things. I'm just happy I can see you again and tell you how I feel."
Before you had a chance to say anything, he had gently pulled you forward until your lips met with his. It was gentle and sweet and left you absolutely breathless. When he pulled back, forehead resting against yours and his hand still cupping your cheek, you felt a soft sigh leave your lips.
"You're so stupid... and reckless... and I love you too, Ichigo."
"Great, wanna go on a date after we defeat Aizen?"
He stared at you with a confused look for a moment, watching as you just began to laugh at his silliness. His expression soon changed to a soft smile, knowing just how ridiculous he was being. It was the first time in a while he had gotten to see your smile... so he didn't mind you laughing at him.

say yes
orihime doesn't actually believe him at first when he asks her out | (ao3)
Orihime doesn’t actually believe him at first when he asks her out.
The weeks leading up to the wedding pass by in such a rush that she’s mostly just focused on planning her leaves at work and getting the veil done in time. Even though it was handy to have the Kurosaki Clinic as a meet-up location for everyone, she hadn’t actually planned to spend so much time there. There was so much to do off-late, and the last thing she wanted to do was distract Ichigo from his studies (contrary to his lackadaisical attitude, she knew he wanted to do well with his courses). But an evening had become many evenings, and Ichigo’s sisters were so sweetly persuasive that Orihime often found it hard to say no. The Kurosakis were a rowdy family, but they were warm and kind and welcoming in a way that was addictive to just lean into. Ichigo had to have gotten it from somewhere, after all.
And then the wedding happens, and Rukia actually wears the veil, and she’s so busy crying that she hardly has the time to process what it all means. Marriage had always been a distant concept to Orihime. Sora had never married, and she had never actually given much thought to it until she saw Rukia walk down the aisle with her own brother—somber and serious and beautiful. A bride.
It was only when her eyes met Renji’s that Rukia’s expression broke into a small, knowing smile. A Rukia smile, undoubtedly, with all its usual restraint, but there was a familiarity to it that gave Orihime pause. It felt like a secret shared. It felt intimate, a wisdom beyond Orihime’s years. For the briefest of seconds, she wondered what that must feel like. That closeness. That vulnerability.
Then she felt afraid—and promptly beat her curiosity back into submission.
So when Ichigo admits that he’s been thinking about her for a while, that he’s been harboring feelings for her, it doesn’t really—register. His eyes are uncertain, searching, and she instinctively wants to reach out to him, but she doesn't know how. She suspects she must have stuttered something back, but she is, ultimately, in utter shock. Four years of doodling his face on notebooks and following him to hell and back, and she never once thought about what would happen if he honestly, seriously, actually liked her back. It doesn’t make any sense.
In the end, she realizes she must have misunderstood him, which sounds a lot more like her the more she thinks about it. Her daydreams about Ichigo have always been vivid with detail, turning his mild affection into rapturous sentiment, so she files it away as her usual whimsy and moves on.
But then Ichigo asks her if she wants to go on a walk one day, and Orihime isn’t sure. They’ve done things like that before, but those instances were spontaneous—him walking her back home after she dropped her notes off at his house, or him lingering by her doorway, long after a hang-out with their friends. He’s never asked like this before and it feels—different.
And when she actually shows up to the end of her street where they were supposed to meet, he looks nervous. Worse, he can tell something is off.
“Is something wrong?” he asks with a small frown.
“No! No, of course not,” she blurts, then quickly smiles as if to pacify him.
They walk up to the river together and find themselves strolling along the bank for a while, but it’s quiet. Orihime keeps trying to recall what he said at the cafe the other day, about what he could have possibly meant when he said, I’m trying to be honest about my feelings and it’s okay if you want to stay friends.
Her nails dig into her palms.
“It’s kinda cloudy, huh,” Ichigo remarks, a little sheepish when he looks over his shoulder at her. Orihime’s stomach drops at the way he looks, windswept and casual with both hands tucked into the pockets of his jacket. His eyes are so warm, so kind, and she wonders if he knows that she loves him. Something lurches within her, and she almost feels sick as she stops in her footsteps.
"I'm sorry." She shakes her head. "I'm sorry, this is just. This is a lot."
"What is?"
"This," she whispers. She dares not call it what it isn’t, already wanting to flee. Ichigo’s eyes widen, and she can tell he’s realized, kind of, what she’s talking about. She pushes on, her voice small and guilty. "This doesn't feel very real to me."
A casual conversation with Ichigo is all well and good, even if it makes her stomach goopy sometimes and she’s got to scream herself hoarse into her pillow to beat down the rush. But she just can’t picture Ichigo doing that about her. Even her wildest imagination draws short.
“Are you talking about what I said the other day at the cafe?” he asks quietly.
Orihime nods, not really looking at him but out towards the Karakura horizon.
“Do you—do you not feel the same?”
The shock of that question instantly draws Orihime’s attention back to his face. She realizes he’s trying to brace himself, and the corners of his eyes are creased like it would…
(Like it would hurt if she says no)
“It’s not like that,” she mutters, mustering courage. But it falters when their eyes meet, and she flushes. Even saying that much is too much. Still, she finds her voice for long enough to say, “But, um. You said you liked me.”
It’s Ichigo’s turn to flush. Y-yeah.”
Oh.
“As—as friends?” She wants to kick herself for asking the question, and then promptly wants the ground to swallow her up when Ichigo looks like he’s in pain.
“Ye-No—I mean.” He covers his mouth with a fist to clear his throat. “I just, uh. You know. I like being friends with you, obviously. But it’s—it’s not. Fully, like.”
Orihime nods quickly but completely devoid of comprehension.
“I think it’s been a little different for a while now,” he admits, almost guiltily. “Maybe for a long time, I don’t know.”
Orihime tries to breathe, to think of the implications. But in the end, she’s just swept away by the golden sunlight on his face, by the courage it must have taken for him to admit such a thing. She still has a hard time wrapping her head around it, but she recognizes, intuitively, that he’s trying to give her something. Something important. And she can’t not handle it with care. Not when it’s from him. Even if it feels like she’s cupping her hands around something tenuous.
“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you earlier,” he adds, and she can tell from his tone that he’s serious. “I think I was trying to figure it out for myself.”
Orihime laughs feebly, embarrassed. “You don’t have to be sorry for something like that.”
Ichigo smiles a small smile back at her, both hands in his pockets. He still looks tense, uncertain, and Orihime wants to make him feel better, but between them is a wall that hasn’t come down before, and she doesn’t know what it’s going to feel like when it does, but she bets it's intense. It has to be. She hates to admit that she’s a little afraid of it.
“It doesn’t have to be anything you don’t want it to,” Ichigo says quietly. “We can forget this happened.”
Orihime watches him, the way the light hits his face as he waits for her answer. She shakes her head. “No, I just.” She braves herself to look up at him, to try and say what she has in her heart. “Can we take it a little slow, Kurosaki-kun?”
_____________________
Tatsuki calls her crazy for not jumping him the second he confessed, which is really typical of her, but Chad just frowns when she tells him what happened.
“You like him,” Chad points out.
Orihime nods. That’s not something she’ll ever deny.
“He likes you.”
She gnaws her lip, fighting down the anxious surge in her stomach.
“He does,” Chad insists. “I know him.”
For a minute, Orihime stews on his words, the two of them quiet as they walk along the side street together.
“Give him a chance,” Chad says, glancing down at her with a small smile. “Let him show you. Ichigo won’t let you down.”
_____________________
Orihime pays a little more attention.
There’s a little bookstore in midtown Karakura that she likes, and she builds the courage to ask him if he wants to go with her.
(“That sounds like a great idea, Inoue,” he’d breathed, and Orihime wasn’t sure if it was a trick of the light or if he looked a little relieved by her initiative).
Either way, Orihime watches the slouch of his back, the thin, long lines of his fingers as he gently pulls books out of the shelves and frowns at the little blurbs on the back. His movements are so familiar to her by now, but she ends up watching him more than the books, fascinated by his every gesture, the firmness of his shoulders, his arms.
“Here,” he says, and she starts a little. He’s holding a book out to her with a little smile. “I think you’ll like this one.”
She takes it from him gingerly. It’s a heist adventure set in outer space—exactly the kind of thing she likes to get lost in during breaks at work, and it touches her deeply, the fact that he knows what she likes to read—that over years of borrowing and lending from each other, he’s learned. She smiles and holds the book to her chest, determined to find something for him too.
But fundamentally, the truth is that Ichigo is no different from who he used to be. Even as they talk about their friends, or when she brings him yakisoba and they sit by his bedroom window to eat it, he’s still the same he’s always been. He talks flippantly about his teachers but passionately about his classes. He scoffs at the ridiculous things she says and teases her about her wild imagination. He looks lost when she meanders her way through a story but listens patiently anyway. These are all things that the Ichigo of last year used to do. The Ichigo she knew and had grown comfortable with, to a point where she didn’t feel conscious about being in his room, or talking to him like this, with no one else around. It’s easy to forget that he likes her in those moments, which makes her think maybe he doesn’t like her that way at all—maybe he was just trying to tell her how much he values her as a friend, and she was reading into it too much, or projecting or—or—
(Or he’s always felt like this, her brain provides. She takes a gigantic hammer and smashes this thought, then steps on it with her foot for good measure.)
Orihime knows that Ichigo has always loved her—just like he’s loved Chad or Rukia or a person he just met that needed saving. Ichigo is a kind, giving person. She knows better than to mistake that for pining.
But there are times where his thigh brushes hers, or she laughs at something he says, and he gives her a look, a look that he’s never given her before, tentative, searching. She wonders what would happen if he would lean down and kiss her then, just his mouth on hers, nothing more. It’s nothing she hasn’t imagined before, but like all her other fantasies, it’s not something she’s ever thought would actually happen. She’s imagined burger kingdoms (because if there’s a Burger King, he has to have a home, right?) and clouds that taste like cotton candy, and this is just one of those things—perfect, but too good to be true.
“I don’t know what I’m doing,” she pictures telling him. “I like you,” she pictures telling him. She even knows the exact face he would make, a little stunned, because she’s always coming at him from a little left of center. A little tender, because he’s always been so kind to her. Ichigo would never hurt her, but she’s a coward all the same, satisfied with having him only in her burger-kingdom-candy-cloud fantasies. She’d never know what to do if he gave her his hand.
She throws her head into her pillow and screams. At least this hasn’t changed—and it provides her a little comfort.
_____________________
He’s walking her back home from his house one day when he says, “I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.”
Orihime whips her head up so fast she nearly gets dizzy. “What?”
He doesn’t look at her. “I’m terrible at this. Being a boyfriend.”
Orihime wants to reassure him of his merits, but she’s still stuck on boyfriend. Kurosaki-kun, her boyfriend. The shape of those words makes no sense, not in that order, not even rearranged. A hysterical part of her wants to laugh, and then lie down sideways and roll all the way home.
Ichigo lifts his gaze from the ground and frowns at her. “You don’t believe it.”
“Kurosaki-kun?”
He kicks at a pebble in his path and watches it totter out of the way. “You don’t believe that I like you.”
It’s only slightly accusing. He mostly just sounds sad, like there’s something wrong and he has no idea how to fix it.
“That’s not—” she begins. True, she wants to say, but she can’t bring herself to admit that it would be a little bit of a lie to say she had wholly embraced this idea that Ichigo was apparently in love with her. “Kurosaki-kun.” It comes out a little helpless, and she can’t help but stare up at him, hoping he’ll understand.
“I do, you know,” he says quietly. Stubbornly, almost. There’s a determination in his eyes that’s so familiar to her by now, a brimming thunder in him that speaks of hidden depths—things he feels that he can’t quite find the words for. Ichigo has always spoken so much with so little that when he says, “I do,” again, she knows. He’s been saying it to her in one form or another for a while now. Had he always been, even when he hadn’t quite known that that was what he was saying?
“I’m the terrible one.” she says finally, shaking her head. “Kurosaki-kun—Kurosaki-kun is so brave, so warm.” She looks up at him, and she tells herself she isn’t going to cry, even if she feels it at the base of her throat. “I wouldn’t even know what to do if you gave me your hand.”
Surprise breaks out on Ichigo’s face, followed by understanding.
“You could hold it,” he said quietly. And then color fills his cheeks, his own admission embarrassing him as he looks away from her face. “I-If you wanted to.”
Orihime lets out a breath, the thrill of possibility and permission making itself clear in the air between them. She stares at his hand, so large, so there, and lowers her own to lock their fingers together. Warm. His hand is warm. Her cheeks are on fire. Ichigo still doesn’t look at her, but his cheeks are pink too.
“I’ll hold it,” she decides, carefully cradling it with both her hands like it’s the most important thing in the world. Ichigo nods and squeezes his grip. She squeezes back.
They walk home that way. Neither of them says a word.
_____________________
Later that night, much, much later, Orihime rolls over in bed and stares out her window. It’s dark outside, quiet, and all she can think about is Ichigo. She’s spent a few nights like this before, her love for him so full that it had a presence of its own in the room. Ichigo, with his hand on his chin, talking about anything, everything. Ichigo at war, his back to her because he trusts her with it. Ichigo’s hand in hers, not limp, not asleep, but awake and alive and hers to hold.
I like you, she tries with her mouth. I like you.
She picks up the phone and dials his number without thinking about it, really.
There are one, two, three, four rings between them, and then his voice arrives on the other end, thick with sleep, concerned. “Hello?” A pause, like he’s pulled the phone away from his ear to see who’s calling. “Inoue?!”
“Kurosaki-kun,” she returns.
“What’s wrong? Are you in trouble?”
She smiles. “No. I just…I wanted to tell you…”
“Tell me what?”
“I like you, Kurosaki-kun,” she confesses, true and soft and clear. It’s only when she’s said it that she realizes it’s the first time she’s said it to him out loud, with him awake to hear it. “I like you,” she says again, stronger this time, more insistent—no room for error, or misunderstanding or doubt.
There’s a long silence on the other end, and it draws for so long that Orihime almost falls asleep to it, but for once she’s not afraid. She’s ready for the wall to come down, however long it takes, or however fast.
Finally, Ichigo laughs, just a heavy exhale from his nose. “Sheesh. Is that it? I thought you were seriously in trouble or something.” He doesn't sound disgruntled, though. He sounds pleased. Thrilled, really. It's like the warmth is emanating off of him, and Orihime can feel it all the way here, three blocks away. And then he says, “Me too,” and it’s like he’s here, burrowed in her ribs alongside that beating thing she calls a heart.
She falls asleep that way, her phone cradled to her chest, static waves connecting her to him. It’s the best sleep she’s gotten in years.

Some time later, after a few days have passed, she takes him to the park for a date, his hand in hers as they walk between the trees. He’s in a light jacket that looks good on him; she’s in his coat, two sizes too big on her.
“I want to race you to the end of the park,” she declares, tilting her gaze towards him to see his reaction.
He blanches. “It’s the middle of winter.”
“That makes it sound like you don’t think you can win in these conditions,” she observes, tapping her chin with one finger. “Could it be that the mighty Kurosaki-kun is…slacking…?”
Ichigo frowns. “Oi.”
“It’s just a few hundred meters,” she assures him.
He sighs, letting go of her hand and heading over to the other side of the walkway so he can get into position. “Ready when you are,” he says.
Orihime grins. They ready, set, go it, and then she’s darting, dashing through the park like her feet can’t carry her fast enough. Ichigo is hot on her heels, but it’s clear she’s going to be the winner, wind whipping at her hair and her clothes. Something fuels her from within, gives her a boost that makes her reach the park’s edge a second faster than he does, shoes roughly scraping against the pavement upon her landing. She could have run forever with how buoyant this feeling is in her chest, but she settles for grinning, holding her hands out to him as he catches up to her. He’s sulking.
“I’ll buy you hot chocolate,” she promises soothingly, then laughs at the hope that strikes his face. It’s cute enough to deserve a kiss, so she stands up on tiptoes and plants one on him, her lips soft against his cheek.
“O-Okay,” he breathes, a little flush rising to his cheeks.
“Let’s go!” She pumps one fist in the air.
Ichigo takes her other hand, tugging her back before she can walk into oncoming traffic. She settles back with a sheepish grin. He shakes his head. They look both ways this time.
Then they cross the street.

Orihime's Powers and Representation
Tumblr media
Orihime's power in regards to her characterization. Orihime is an idealist. She exists in a very violent world, yet refuses to fight unless she's under really terrible pressure. She used to see Ichigo as her Prince Charming, her Knight in Shining Armor, until she realized that is simply wasn't the case. The girl was pretty much living in her own little fantasy world to cope with her HUGE troubles, which is why yanking her out of it and making her face a reality so stange to her own left her so distraught. So what do her powers do exactly? Reject reality.
Also in regards to Orihime, the reason why Loly and Menoly hate her even more after she uses her Reality Warper powers to bring them back to life. is more complicated than just being two ungrateful sadists. To start, Hollows/Arrancar/Espada as a whole are beings that are born when souls don't cross to Soul Society and stay in our world, becoming corrupted with supernatural energies. And here, two Arrancar girls (Hollows who have removed their mask and gained Shinigami-like powers) have witnessed how a lowly human has the power to undo death, pretty much messing with everything they know about their own existence. What is a crowning moment for Orihime, in the view of these two girls (and especially Loly, who had a better look at all of this than Menoly since she was horribly mutilated by Grimmjow yet she was not dead) is like catching view of an abomination, which explains the whole "she's a monster" deal.
Hollows, beings that are born from death, despair and fear, are being faced with a being who can literally rewrite reality so that events do not occur. Taken in this context, Orihime is less like an angel of mercy to these two and more like a God from their perspective. A being whose nature and abilities are so alien that they outright defy explanation. Considering this, its understandable that they would react less than pleasantly to what happened to them.
Further to the above point on Orihime's character in relation to her powers — there's a very specific reason why Orihime actually used to be useless on the battle field, and it's not any kind of limit on her power. It's been heavily alluded to that Orihime's power is pretty much limited by her own imagination. Naturally, when it comes to helping people, her healing powers can reverse pretty much anything. However, think about who Orihime is. She wouldn't hurt a fly if she could help it. She can take down random Hollows like that mook that was attacking Tatsuki in the school because it's monstrous in appearance, and they'll hurt more people if she doesn't attack. Place a humanoid enemy in front of her, and will take her a while to see that she should consider them an enemy, and she simply cannot attack them unless it's really needed. This is why Tsubaki's power will always be the most limited of her set.
Actually, about Tsubaki... think about the Shiten Koushun aka Shield of Four Heavens' Resistance. How is it formed? Via adding Tsubaki to the Three God Reflection Shield, thus making him turn a defensive barrier into an offensive weapon. Tsubaki is the weakest of the six Rikka spirits as well as the one who's less like her, personality wise; and the ones forming the Reflection Shield (Hinagiku, Lilly and Baigon) are relatively similar to her in character. This means that, if she wants to join the battle effectively, Orihime must accept to use Tsubaki yet not by simply sending him off towards the enemy (like many of her haters want her to), but by integrating him to the side that she dominates the most. Only by using Tsubaki in combination with Hinagiku, Lily, and Baigon can she draw his attack potential... mirroring how Orihime must now fight alongside Ichigo, Chad, and others if she wants to not stay behind. Also, when was the Shiten Koushun seen first? When she and Ichigo were attacked by Ginjou. Who was actually a humanoid enemy (more exactly the formwr Substitute Shinigami, but we didn't know that back then, and neither did she). This means that Orihime either is working on the issue mentioned above or has already gotten past behind it.
As for her Santen Kesshun (Three God Reflection Shield)? It too, is not the fragile thing it seems to be. It is specifically stated to Reject an attack and its consequences. It stands to perfectly good reason that it doesn't matter if the shield shatters instantly or not — another can always be thrown up. What matters is that whether the shield shatters or not, it genuinely DOES reject the attack that hits it.
Furthermore, it actually makes a ton of sense that it shatters so easily, too. Orihime's powers are a form of reality warping, after all, being what Aizen calls "the Rejection of Events"; she's essentially the Queen of Retcons. When her base shield blocks an attack, it also retcons that attack out of existence. But then, that raises the question... if there was never any attack to block, then why would she even make a shield in the first place? The reason it shatters isn't that it's fragile; it's the shield disappearing in a Puff of Logic because the attack it was meant to block suddenly never existed in the first place.

—————————————————————————
soul reaper ichigo - who was actually listing to the whole conversation and he was leaning against a wall in the hallway, his mind still thinking about you. the sight of you always made his stomach flutter, and his heart beat faster, but it was all overridden by the sadness and heartbreak he felt. he looked miserable.. his eyes spotted you walk out of the classroom, making his heart skip a beat. he began to panic.. unsure if he should come over and make an attempt to talk to you. he wanted to.. he really did.. but he felt so defeated and miserable, he didn’t want to get hurt any more.
“ hey.. can i talk to you for a minute..?” he finally took a breath and gathered the courage to walk up to you. just being this close to you made him feel.. so many things, but he tried to hide them.
you stood there awkwardly for a couple seconds before nodding slowly. he let out a small breath, silently thanking god that you actually answered him. he glanced around for a minute, noticing a couple of people passing by, before grabbing your wrist and gently guiding you into a nearby empty classroom. once in the empty classroom, he let your wrist go, shutting the door behind him before he turned to look at you. he took a breath, trying to find the right words to say.*
“i.. uh.. i need to ask you something.. if that’s alright..?”
“ what is it ichigo…” you let out a sigh after all these days we were finally speaking to each other. he took a small breath, noticing the tone of annoyance in your voice, but he ignored it for now. He leaned his back against the wall, stuffing his hands in his pockets as he looked at you
“ how.. how have you been doing..? after.. y’know- we broke up..”
“ really….? that’s what you wanted to know.. you know what we can have a conversation when you’re actually ready and are not beating around the bush…” you scoffed about to walk away from since you thought we’re gonna have a real discussion.
soul reaper ichigo - who he quickly grabbed your wrist and pulled you back before you could walk away. he wasn’t done yet.. he didn’t want you to leave yet. not again..
“ alright, alright.. fine..” he mumbled, before looking at you, his heart pounding in his chest.
“ fine.! we can please talk about you keeping secrets ichigo..! like you’re always with chad , uryu , ruika and orihime.! did you even ever like me..?!” you said confused trying your best to control your emotions.
he frowned, the sudden realization that you felt left out and like he didn’t like to hit him.. his heart hurt knowing you felt that way.. “ of course i like, love you! y-you’re my girlfriend..”
he stopped, thinking for a moment on whether or not to tell you about him being a soul reaper.. but him and his other friends already knew.
“ we’re not even dating … anymore ichigo..” you mumbled
soul reaper ichigo - who felt a pang in his chest when you mentioned you weren’t even dating anymore.. it was a reality he didn’t like to accept.
“ you’re right… we’re not..” he mumbled in response, his heart feeling heavy as he looked at you.
“ right… so what’s the point of even talking about it if you’re just keeping your secrets from me..”
he let out a small hiss of frustration, his hands clenched into fists, before he closed his eyes for a minute. he couldn’t keep it a secret for longer..
“ alright.. alright fine.. i have a secret.. and you need to promise you won’t freak out when i tell you..” your eyes lit up as he promised to finally tell you the truth.
he took a breath, his heart pounding in his chest. this.. was big. *like my dick-pause*. it could change everything, but he needed you to know..*
“ promise me you can’t freak out when i tell you.. please..” *he repeated, looking at you with a serious yet slightly nervous look in his eyes.*
“ okay.. i-i promise ichigo…”
soul reaper ichigo - who’s nodded slowly, silently praying to the god you’d actually keep your word. he knew how it’d go.. you’d either call him a liar or freak out and leave.. he knew better than to think you’d believe him right off the bat.
“ alright.. just.. trust me on this.. and don’t.. freak out..” he repeated one final time, before taking another deep breath.
“ i’m a soul reaper..”
“ … “
he looked at you for a moment, silently looking for any indication as to how you’d react.. but since you said nothing, he took it as a chance to continue.
” y-you’re not.. saying anything.. which, i’ll admit, is a little scary..” he mumbled, slightly nervous and scared of your possible reaction.
“ a s-soul reaper…?”
he nodded slowly, before taking a breath once more, preparing himself for any questions or any possible outburst.
“ yeah .. a soul reaper. one of the soul society.. y’know- the afterlife?”
soul reaper ichigo - who before he could finish his sentence you immediately pushed your lips against his. all thoughts in his head came to a sudden stop, every bit of worry or anxiety he felt about your reaction gone in the blink of an eye. all he felt was your lips against his and the shock of the sudden kiss, but he slowly but surely began to melt into it, wrapping his arms around your waist and pulling you closer.
your hands on his face you cupped his jaw as you pushed him down to your height making the kiss even more deeper.
a small, quiet moan escaped his lips as he gave into the heat of the kiss, pulling you even closer so your body was pressed against his own. He could feel his chest fill with a burning heat that he felt only around you, pushing his hands under your shirt and trailing them up your bare back. he’d missed this.. he’d missed you so much..
you also moaned into the kiss your tongue exploding his mouth basically sticking your tongue down his throat.
he couldn’t get enough of you. holding you like this, your tongue against his.. it was absolutely euphoric for him. as his thoughts became more hazy with need and want for you, he pushed you against a wall, his hands running all over your body as he deepened the kiss even more, practically wanting to devour you completely.
your hands let go of jaw and slowly moved down to the hem of his pants.
he froze for a moment as he felt your hand trail down his body, his mind immediately going into a panic on what exactly you were trying to do. He tried his best to keep focused on the kiss, not wanting to lose that feeling, but he could feel his body heating up and could feel himself already getting excited.
you finally pulled away after the hot long steamy kiss but your lips still touching as your hands slid into his pants not knowing he was a virgin.
soul reaper ichigo - who let out a small moan the moment your hand slid into his pants, and his eyes widened slowly as he realized what you were trying to do. he was absolutely embarrassed and extremely flustered, having never done anything like this before.
“w-wait- “
he started to say in protest, the words coming out in a small stutter as he tried to control his own excitement and desire for you.
“ then be quiet for me okay..?” you said quietly as your hands slowly moved into his boxers.
his face was completely red now, and his breathing was erratic and heavy as he nodded slowly, completely at your mercy as he desperately tried to keep any sounds in.
“ y-yeah.. i’ll be.. quiet..” he responded back in a small, embarrassed and slightly shaky voice.
“ s-but be quick about it..”
“ you rushing me…?” you smiled a bit as your warm hands finally touched his dick.
he inhaled sharply and let out a small gasp, his body shuddering slightly from the feeling. he was already at full attention, needy and desperate for you.. but he didn’t care. In that moment, he just wanted you, his heart rate going faster.
“ of course I’m rushing you.. we’ll get found out if you’re too slow..” he mumbled, unable to keep the needy tone out of his voice.
“ mm… i’ll go faster if you beg for it…” you said your lips grazing his ear.
soul reaper ichigo - who was a complete mess now, and that small gesture to his ear had him shivering more, a small gasp leaving his lips as he felt your breath against his ear. he bit his lip as he desperately tried to keep any sounds in, knowing he’d have to beg if he wanted more..
“ please.. please just.. do it faster.. i.. i need you..” he whispered.
your smile grew as you actually heard him begged as you got down your knees in front of him. he could see you get on your knees in front of him, and it was almost too much for him to process. his heart was racing, and he was sure it was hard to keep any sounds in at this point. but he tried his best, trying desperately to keep a small amount of control. he looked down at you, his eyes filled with need and want for you.
“please..”
your hands pulled out of his boxers and to the hem of his pants pulling them down slowly. as they fell to his ankles he felt his face get more red as he felt his pants being pulled down, his heart racing faster as he felt himself getting more excited. he suddenly remembered that he hadn’t told you.. he was still a virgin..
“ w-wait-“ he tried to say, only managing to stutter the one word, his breathing fast and shaky as he looked down at you, trying to figure out how to tell you.
“ what..?” you looked up at him, your fingers about to pull his boxers down as they traced the rim of his boxers. he bit his lip as he felt your fingers tracing the rim of his boxers, struggling to keep any more pleas and moans in, but he needed to tell you..
“ i.. i need to tell you something.. please..” he managed to say, still keeping his voice quiet so no one outside the classroom would overhear you and him.
soul reaper ichigo - who inhaled sharply as he felt his boxers start to be pulled down.. he knew if he waited any longer to say something he’d be too late.
“ i’m.. i’m a..” he started, trailing off as he tried to find the right words to say.
“.. i’m still a.. virgin..” he mumbled, his face practically burning and he looked down at you, hoping you wouldn’t judge him or say anything bad..
“ o-oh..” you froze as you removed your hands from his boxers stopping yourself before this could go any further but you couldn’t lie you felt a rush of excitement when he said that you were gonna be his first.. he froze and held his breath as he watched you remove your hands from his boxers.. he was embarrassed and a little ashamed for not telling you before..
“ is.. is that.. bad?” he asked quietly, the embarrassment clear in his voice as he looked down at you, still feeling the need and desire from a moment ago, but he figured you didn’t want to continue anymore..
“ n-no.! um no it’s not… j-just a surprise..” you said as you cleared your throat from the awkwardness that wasn’t there like a second ago.
he hesitantly nodded in response, still embarrassed but glad to know you didn’t think it was bad. his breathing had started to slow, but he could still feel his excitement and the need for you. he still wanted you, and he didn’t want to stop now..
“can.. can we still continue..?” he asked in a quiet voice, almost sounding like a plea again.
“ a-are you sure you don't want your first time to be special… and um not in a classroom..?” you asked quietly, looking up at him.
he nodded slowly, blushing at the thought of it being special, but he didn’t want to wait anymore.. he wanted you now. he reached down, grabbing your wrist and pulling you up so you were standing in front of him again.
“ i don’t care.. i just need you..” be muttered, his heart still beating fast as he looked down at you, bringing his hands up to your waist to hold you close to him. he was a mess for you, desperate for your touch..
soul reaper ichigo - who let out a small moan against your lips, his hands pulling you in closer and his arms wrapping around your waist as he desperately kissed you back. he was completely lost in you, wanting more and more. he couldn’t get enough of this.. the feeling of your lips against his, your hands on him. he needed you, all of you.
your hands went to the bottom of your shirt pulling it off after your head over shirt landed on the floor just leaving you in your bra.
his eyes widened and he froze for a moment at the sight of you in only your bra, his breath catching in his throat as he looked at you. a small blush crept across his face and his eyes roamed over your body, taking in every last inch of you. his hands went back to gripping your waist, holding you firmly against him as he tried to regain his bearings.
“ you’re.. beautiful..” he finally managed to say, his voice sounding slightly strangled.
your smile grew as your hands went behind your back unclipping your bra as that also fell on the ground showing him your boobs in which you have your nipple pierced
*if you don’t like just ignore just thought it would be cool to add that.*
his eyes grew impossibly wide at the sight of you completely topless, his breath getting caught in his throat again as he looked at you. “ holy sh-“ he immediately cut himself off, unable at that moment to even form a coherent sentence. he could feel himself getting more excited than ever, his mind completely fuzzy and filled with thoughts of you.
“ i.. i didn’t think you’d..” he muttered, his hands still on your waist, gripping a bit tighter.
“ shhh..” you mumbled, pushing him down on one of the chairs in the classroom, reminding him to be quiet since you’re both still in the school.
soul reaper ichigo - who he gasped as he suddenly felt himself get pushed down onto a chair, his head hitting the top part before he sat up more so he could actually look at you. he swallowed, reminding himself that he had to keep quiet as he looked at you, completely at your mercy as he sat in the chair.
“ o-okay.. i’ll be quiet..” he mumbled as he bit his lip, looking up at you.
“ good boy…” you replied back as my fingers pulled down his boxers slowly as they slid down to his ankles along with his pants, feeling yourself get more soaked in your panties as your skirt lifted up as you got down on your knees once again.
he shuddered as he felt his boxers slowly get taken off, his breathing getting heavier and his heart rate increased. he could feel your words go through him again, making him feel even needier and more desperate for more. he looked at you, his mouth slightly open as he struggled to keep any sounds in, almost completely at your mercy.
“ y-yeah.. i’m a good boy..” he managed to stutter out in a low, slightly strained voice. he reached out for you, trying to hold back a small whine, wanting to keep his hands on you his eyes roamed over your body, and he couldn’t look away once he noticed your piercings.
your hands went to his dick as you grip him with your small warm hands he was so much larger than you expected and so so pretty. slender, with a pale shaft that leads into a rosy pink at the tip leaking precum. it curves up and to the right. you brush your thumb over his tip smearing his precum over his tip making his body twitch and his hips thrust up to your touch.
soul reaper ichigo - he inhaled sharply when he felt you grip him, holding back a small moan at the feeling of your warm hands on him. his breathing was already uneven from the feeling, and the touch of your thumb over his tip had him shuddering, his hands subconsciously gripping the chair.
“ f-fuck..” he muttered under his breath, unable to stop the small words from escaping. he felt his entire body overheat at the feeling of your touch.
your hands started to trace the veins that were going up to his rosy pinkish tip as pre cum starts to leak from out of his tip you feel yourself getting even wetting your panties molded of your folds.
he tensed up, his breathing heavy and labored as you traced the veins, his tip leaking precum as you teased him. his head was spinning, and he was struggling to keep any sounds in, biting his lip to hold back moans of pleasure.
“ i-i can’t..” he quietly managed to say, his hands gripping even tighter on the arms of the chair he was sitting on.
you snuck your hand under your skirt as you began to take off your panties coming off your ankles while your head lowered towards his aching dick as you kitten licked his now reddish angry tip licking off the pre cum. “ mm… sweet..”
he gasped and shuddered at the feeling of your tongue, his hands gripping even tighter on the chair, the sound of the wood creaking slightly being heard. he bit down on his lip, trying to contain moans, and it took everything he had just to keep himself somewhat quiet.
“ nnngh.. that feels so.. good..” he managed to say in a quiet, strained voice. you stood up off your knees revealing your naked body. his heart was racing and his mind was completely fuzzy, and he was suddenly confronted with the sight of you being fully naked. he could feel himself getting more excited and desperate as he looked you over, his eyes roaming your body.
“ fuck.. you’re so perfect..” he mumbled quietly, his eyes lingering on your pierced nipples before looking back at your face.
“ are you sure you still want this..?” you asked in a hushed tone after he was still a virgin.. he nodded slowly, his brain already becoming completely muddled from desire and need, but he had to keep control for a moment.
“ i'm sure, i want this.. i want you..” he said, his voice quiet but firm, letting you know he truly wanted to do this.
“ okay…” you mumbled before sitting on his lap your hands grabbed him softly before slowly lining him up with my entrance… fuck you’re soaked. he felt his heart skip a beat as you sat on his lap, his eyes on you the entire time. he could hardly breath, excitement and a small hint of nervousness rushing through him as you lined him up with your entrance. he bit his lip, his hands going to your hips, holding onto you.
“ y-you can… keep going..” he said in a low, quiet voice, his eyes watching you closely, his breath hitching in anticipation as he spoke.*
soul reaper ichigo - who felt his tip go into your warm tight folds making you let out a quiet moan just from the tip stretching you out already you felt yourself getting more aroused damn near becoming dizzy as you slid down your wall clenching around him.
he let out a strangled gasp, biting his lip harshly to try and keep any louder sounds in as he felt himself slowly go into you. he was so sensitive, and the feeling of you around his tip had his head spinning, his body already wanting so much more. his breathing was quick and erratic, his hands grabbing your waist and holding you to him, his body shaking softly as he tried
you continue to slide down his girth making you let out a moan making me clench around him tighter as you sat all the way down his and yours thighs touching as he was so deep in you right now making you breathless you never felt so full.. you looked down noticing the huge bulge in your stomach.
ichigo was at his limit, his breathing and senses completely erratic and overwhelmed by the feeling of you around him. his body was on fire, and every sense was on overload. he looked down and saw the bulge in your stomach, and he thought he might lose his mind at the sight. He was completely in bliss.
you felt one of his hands go to your stomach and put pressure on his large bulge showing through your stomach making you clench harder and your hands went to squeeze his shoulders.
he gasped as he felt your clench around him, and he could barely handle it at that point. he was feeling so much pleasure and so many sensations at once, he was completely at your mercy. he could barely even think straight anymore, but he looked down and felt your hands on his shoulders, and he brought a hand up to the one you had on his shoulder, intertwining his fingers with yours, holding your hand as he pressed his hand against your stomach.
he gasped at the movement of your hips, a small moan escaping him before he could stop it. he held onto your hips and your hand, his head spinning as he felt your motions on him.
“ ah.. y-you feel so good.. mmngh..” he was struggling to keep his voice quiet, and he was sure anyone outside the classroom would’ve likely heard by now, but he didn’t even care at this point.
“ such a good boy…” you coo peppering a few kisses near the crook of his neck whilst your cunt glides on his dick stretching you out even more than you could imagine trying your best not to cum already.
soul reaper ichigo - who he trembled at the feeling of your kisses and your praise, a small moan escaping him once again. he was completely at your mercy, but he didn’t mind at all, in fact he loved it. his body was buzzing with pleasure and his mind was completely fuzzy from it all, he was overwhelmed.
“ f-fuck…” you mumbled you couldn’t even get the words out making you all warm your brain going dizzy as you went even faster you could tell he was close once you felt him twitch deep inside of you. he gasped at the feeling of you picking up the pace, his body getting closer and closer to the edge as he felt himself twitching inside you.
you were caught off guard when ichigo thrust his hips into your cunt making you let out a pornographic moan as it echoed in the classroom making an attempt to smack your ass but he quickly rubbed it softly afterwards. he was completely lost in the pleasure and feeling of you, no longer even trying to contain moans. when he heard your moan echo through the room, he was unable to hold back anymore, and he was already on the edge.
“ n-nngh.. i’m..i’m close..”
“ yeah hmm.. b-be ..fuck- a good boy for me..? and cum inside me..” you whispered as your lips hovered over his ear as you started to peck his neck slowly with kisses.
“ y-yeah.. i’ll be a good boy, i promise..” he nearly growled at your words, the feeling of your lips on his neck and whisper in his ear bringing him closer and closer to the edge. he was quickly losing his mind, and he was ready to give you exactly what you wanted, to be a good boy for you. he was a complete mess under you, and it was nearly sending him over the edge.
“ yes.. good boy..” you breathes out, hearing the brief sounds of squelching your own cunt made going inside of you and suddenly the entire room grows quiet from the sounds of just ichigo's and your soft breaths and your pussy making all kinds of noise because of ichigo's length.
soul reaper ichigo - who he was trembling in pleasure at the sounds coming from you, he was completely at your mercy, and he was nearing the end. it was all so much and he was completely overwhelmed by it, he was almost at his breaking point.
“ i’m.. i’m going to-” he managed to say, his voice strained and breathing heavy, he could barely speak through how.
“ shhh… it’s okay.. baby open your mouth for me…” you hushed him as you begin to suck on his neck. he gasped and shuddered, biting back a moan as he felt your lips on his neck, doing as you told him and opening his mouth, your nipple piercing pressed up against his chest.
he trembled at the feeling of your lips on his neck, the feeling of the nipple piercing against his bare chest as well as hearing you whisper to him. he looked at you and did exactly as you said, he opened his mouth.
you bit your lip before pressing your whole body against his still riding him. you licked your lips before cupping his jaw softly collecting saliva in mouth before spitting into his mouth.
soul reaper ichigo - who he gasped as he felt your body pressed against his, and when you licked your lips he had a flash of a feeling of anticipation, not knowing what you were going to do. when you cupped his jaw and he saw you gathered your saliva in your mouth, he couldn’t look away from you, watching you intently as he waited. when he felt your spit on his tongue, his eyes widened slightly in surprise, but he didn’t complain, and instead swallowed your spit.
you grip his jaw harder as you smashed your lips against his it was such a mess a sloppy kiss you started to grind down on him as he continued to thrust up into your g-spot making you moan into the kiss.
he gasped into the kiss as you kissed him deeper, it was all so messy, but that only added to how overwhelming all this was for him, the amount of pleasure he was feeling and the sensations of your mouth on his, it was all so much. he bucked his hips up into you, hitting your g-spot and continuing to thrust into you, his mind completely fuzzy and blank by this point, he couldn’t even think anymore. he held onto you with one hand on your hip and the other tangled up in your hair.
“ mm..!” you let out a loud moan in the classroom as you continued to suck his neck going down to his apple adam his dick was just driving in and out of you.
he was quickly losing himself to the pleasure, his mind and body completely overwhelmed by all the sensations as he thrusted into you, his breathing getting more heavy and erratic, the feeling of your lips on his neck and your moans and sounds only driving him more crazy. he gripped you tighter, his hands trembling, as if holding onto you was the only thing keeping
you gasp once he prods against your g-spot for probably the uncountable time now. ichigo breathing hitches, and once he cums it's so much as he's pouring such thick creamy ropes of cum into your womb. you slow down a bit, still riding him ichigo dick pulses inside of you.
soul reaper ichigo - who he was still trembling softly from his release, his body and mind completely over sensitized from everything that had happened. he held onto you, his hands still shaking from the overwhelming pleasure. he let out a deep breath, trying to steady his breathing, which was still irregular and erratic.
“ holy..fuck..” he managed to get out, still trying to find his bearings again, and he felt he was still a bit overwhelmed from everything that had just happened.
“ couldn’t wait for me.. huh baby so greedy….” you giggle quietly as you let out of his neck revealing the red sensitive hickeys going past his neck and down to his apple adam’s. he couldn’t help but huff at your words, the feeling of your giggles against his neck sending a shiver down his spine. he could faintly feel the sensitive hickeys and marks on his neck, and he knew that it’d be a while before he’d be able to hide them.
“ well whose fault do you suppose that is?” he teased, a small smirk on his face, his breathing still a bit labored.
“ oh..? is my good boy talking back to me..” you raised your brow as you clench down on him riding him as you unexpectedly came hard my legs shaking from the unexpected orgsam.
he hissed at the unexpected clench from you, gripping you a bit tighter in response. he was still a bit sensitive and the feeling made him shiver a bit, even though he wasn’t expecting you to come so suddenly.
“ i-” he started, but stopped, his head falling back a bit as he felt you clenching around him “ i ..” he tried to speak again but his mind was still fuzzy, and his ability to form words was a bit diminished at that moment.
“ that’s what i thought…” you mumbled tiredly but still having the energy to talk back as you stopped riding him your thighs became sore your legs still shaking.
soul reaper ichigo - who he couldn’t help but let out a small huff at your words again as you stopped and he felt your thighs trembling. he still held you in his lap, both his hands on your hips, and he was still trying to slow down his breathing, but it was taking a moment.
“ well you can’t blame me, you make it too damn hard not to talk back.” he huffed again as he spoke
“ oh yeah what happened to my good boy… hmm.?” you whispered against his ear. he shivered again at the feeling of your whisper against his ear, but he couldn't help but pout a bit at your words, knowing that you were teasing him.
“ well... i think you broke him.” he muttered, still holding onto you, his hands a little tight, as if he didn't want to let you go just yet
you giggle quietly at his words before gasping once he suddenly lifts you up softly, pulling out you and ichigos fluids mixing together leaking down your thighs. his mind and body still in a bit of a hazy state, but he was regaining himself again. he held you for a moment. he leaned against you a bit after he pulled out, still feeling a bit dazed and hazy, his mind still trying to clear and come back to reality, and the feeling of your fluids leaking down your thighs was a bit distracting to him. he was silent for a moment, just holding you and trying to gather his thoughts before he finally spoke up again.
“ mm… that was… that was a hell of a first time..” he breathed out softly, looking down and seeing your combined fluids mixing together on your thighs.
you slid off his lap, getting down on my knees in front of him as he sat in the chair still. his eyes widened a bit when you got off his lap and down onto your knees, he wasn’t sure what you were planning, but he couldn’t deny the slight jolt of excitement he felt as he watched you. he leaned back a bit in the chair, his eyes locked on you.
soul reaper ichigo - who he gasped suddenly as he felt your hand on him, and it quickly turned into a low moan as he felt your tongue on him. the feeling was so intense after everything that had already happened, he couldn’t help it. he placed a hand on your head, gently gripping your hair in one hand.
he let out another moan as you started sucking on the tip, and he could barely hold back a gasp when he felt your tongue swirling around it. he felt you deepthroating him, and he couldn’t hold back suddenly. you felt him let out a hot steamy cum spurt of his making you gag since he didn’t warn me which caught you off guard but you swallowed it anyways. he quickly tried to take his hand off your head, feeling bad that he hadn’t thought to warn you.
“ s-sorry, i-” he began to speak, but he was still a bit overwhelmed and his words came out kind of strangled. he took a moment to steady himself, his breathing still a bit quick, his head spinning a bit as he looked down at you feeling a bit bad for not warning you, his mind all warm and fuzzy, but he couldn’t help but feel a bit entranced by the sight in front of him. he slowly removed his hand from your hair, letting out a soft shuddering breath as he looked at you “ sorry.. i just.. didn’t think to warn you i was gonna…”
you lifted your head up quickly as you gasp for air, licking your lips, tasting his leftover fluids on your lips. you opened your mouth to talk but ended up with a lost voice… just from how big he was fuck you’re gonna need to gargled some salt water..
he watched you nod, noticing your slower movements and the shift in the mood, and he was suddenly all too aware that you weren’t together anymore. the whole situation had him feeling a little guilty, in a way, as a part of him felt as though he was using you, and he didn’t like that feeling. he took a breath, trying to sort through his thoughts and his emotions, but he honestly had no idea what to say
“ ichigo…” you mumbled as your voice cracked of course still sore from deep throating him.
soul reaper ichigo - who he looked down at you again, and when he heard the tone of your voice his breath caught a bit, and he didn’t know if it was because of how rough your voice sounded, or something else. either way he felt bad, knowing exactly what the reason was for it being so rough
“ y-yeah..?” he questioned quietly, almost hesitating to speak, feeling an odd mix of guilt and other, more complex emotions
“ get back together with me..” you said quietly but it didn’t sound like a question, more like a demand.
“ please…” you mumbled, covering your chest that had your nipple pierced since it suddenly got cold as a gust of wind flew over the classroom.
he noticed the sudden chill, and when he saw you try to cover yourself he moved on instinct to reach out and grasp your hands, taking them in his own and gently pulling them away from your chest, holding them up between you.
“ you’re gonna get cold if you do that.” he murmured quietly, not knowing what else to say yet. he couldn’t look away from you, his mind still a tangled mess.
soul reaper ichigo - who he instinctively wrapped his other arm around you as he pulled you onto his lap, his hand cupping your breast keeping you a bit warmer and the feeling of the piercing against his palm sent a shiver down his spine. his mind was still caught between what you had just asked, and everything that’s been happening.
" okay... yeah. yeah, we can... get back together." he mumbles, he sighed when he looked down, his hand was just big enough to cover your entire chest. he couldn’t resist tracing his thumb over your nipple piercing, as he held you close to him, resting his chin on your shoulder
your eyes lit up at his words as you smile slightly. another gust of wind came from the door and it caught both of yours and ichigo's attention when we realized the classroom door was open….
he’d been entirely focused on you, so he hadn’t noticed the door being open until you both turned to look at it. his eyes widened a bit when he saw it, realizing that someone could’ve walked by at any time and seen them… he sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose, the feeling of worry and guilt flooding through him again, now remembering where they were, and the possibility of someone walking in on them..
he felt the color drain from his face when he saw chad standing there, stunned and obviously shocked by the scene. you felt embarrassed after all this time how long was he standing there…? ichigo couldn’t think of a single word to say at that moment, he just stared, feeling frozen in place as chad stood in the doorway.
soul reaper ichigo - who actually thanks chad for getting you and him back together even after chad walked into the awkward situation.
soul reaper ichigo - who secretly kept you panties that were on the classroom floor and stuffed them into his pockets while you didn’t even notice.
soul reaper ichigo - who’s finally happy that he got his girlfriend back and doesn’t even have to keep secrets anymore…

I really like the idea that Ichigo has always done some strange stuff, even before any of them had any idea about soul society.
Chad, Orihime, and Uryu (as well as Tatsuki, Keigo and Mizuiro) very much take the approach of don't say a fucking thing, leave him alone to anyone who looks like they may say something about it.
Ichigo makes a strange noise? They've figured out which noises are good ones and which ones are bad ones.
He's a little colder, distant, and sometimes a little cruel? Give him a little bit and he'll be fine again.
He gets a little too bright eyed during fights? Licks blood off his lips and sometimes off a wound? His nails look a little sharp and his teeth a little meaner? All good. He'll beat the shit out of someone, pace around a bit and be fine again.
Eats an unbelievable amount of food and still stays on the lean side of skinny? It's a metabolism thing.
Runs a little colder? He's great to sit by in the hot summer!
Gets a little distracted, looks at things and listen to noises that aren't there? That's normal, he's been able to see weird stuff his whole life!
Even after they all gain the ability see ghosts and that's obviously not what Ichigo is doing, they just tell people he's listening to and seeing ghosts.
Everyone else is a little confused by that but it's clear they're not going to get a real answer and tbh they're not sure they want one.
It's also important that they don't call too much attention to it. Ichigo doesn't seem to realize he does some of those things.
Like when someone pointed out the blood thing and he spent 20 minutes gagging and throwing up, tongue still stained rusty from the blood.
Or when someone mentioned the noises and he doesn't speak for days, quiet and withdrawn. And even now he cuts the noises off, biting them back and swallowing them down.
Or when people called him cruel, a thug, someone who wants to see others hurt, because he got into fight. He didn't fight back the next few times he got jumped, letting the hits land and taking it because the fear that he was all those things people said was stronger than any pain.
All the times he kept his mouth shut because someone joked about wolf teeth.
Or when he ripped his nails down until they bled so they weren't sharp enough to hurt anyone on accident.
Or when he kept his eyes down so no one could say he wore colored contacts to go with his "dyed" hair.
Orihime being so upset after the cookies she had given to someone, who made fun of a noise Ichigo made, had ended up bad! Oh no, oh gosh, how terrible that they got food poisoning! She's so sorry about that but there's a gleam to her eyes that has everyone backing off.
Chad disappearing and coming back with busted knuckles that go unnoticed, Ichigo focused on keeping his fingers curled into his palms and his mouth firmly shut.
Uryu ripping into some of the people who started rumors about Ichigo, channeling every cold and cruel part of him until several people are crying and no one dares say Ichigo's name for awhile.
Tatsuki throwing punches and Keigo attempting too, Mizuiro making things happen that no one can directly link back to him but everyone knows it's him.
Ichigo doesn't ask for a lot, but he gives a lot. Too much.
So, they can give him this. They will give him this. Let him do his odd, little quirks and they'll deal with anyone who tries to say anything.
💀
Shinigami are strange, strange enough that Ichigo blends in with them well, even though he's still sometimes a little strange for a shinigami.
Chad, Orihime, and Uryu are pleased that Ichigo fits in so well with all these new people, especially as they get to know them more.
Renji and Ikkaku are animalistic with too sharp teeth and a wild air to them.
Kenpachi is a monster wearing human skin.
Rukia, and her brother, have moments of cruelty and distance.
Unohana is something old and dangerous.
Kisuke is... unsettling, raises the hair on the back of their necks a little bit but Ichigo likes him. And as unnerving as he is, he's been very helpful.
Yoruichi has a mean streak in her that is very much like a cat batting around a dying mouse.
The visored are even worse.
The humans don't meet them until Ichigo after has already firmly included them in his ever growing group of important people.
The visored are unsettling in a way similar to Kisuke, but heavier. Something about them makes the little animal part of their brains sit up and take notice, the hairs on the backs of their necks standing up and they have to fight the urge to run.
But the visored are strange in the same way Ichigo is strange.
And they'll gives some bonus points to Kisuke and his, because they've never so much as batted an eyelash at Ichigo's more bizarre quirks.
The visored show off too sharp teeth in proud smiles and angry snarls.
They make odd noises between themselves and understand them.
They force people to look them in the eyes, black and gold occasionally making an appearance.
They lick at their wounds absent-mindedly and on purpose.
They make no apologies for who they are or how uncomfortable they make anyone.
More than anything though, they let Ichigo do those things. There a fondness to all of them when Ichigo does something strange front of them. Something that's normal to them.
💀
Ichigo doesn't seem to realize that everyone is actually charmed by his little quirks.
He's saved most of them enough times that there isn't much he could do that would make them anything less then incredibly fond.
It's fun and interesting to see all the things Ichigo does when he's happy and comfortable.
He does a little head tilt, exposed throat move to certain people. The humans don't even think he notices it, it took them awhile to notice it.
He does it to most of the captains, excluding a few like Mayuri and Soi Fon. Particularly to Unohana, Kenpachi, Byakuya and Toshiro for the captains. He does it to Kisuke and the visored.
They notice it and they just roll with it. Kisuke and Shinji (and most of the visored to be completely honest) touch his neck and shoulders a lot.
Unohana makes the smallest nod to him and never acknowledges it again.
It took Ichigo a long time to be comfortable enough with them to touch as much as he wants to. After they saved Rukia and returned home, he was constantly touching them. Grabbing at hands, throwing arms around them, sitting close enough to touch, etc. He even includes Tatsuki, Keigo and Mizuiro in the new, open affection.
He's comfortable enough to be that way with a lot of people now.
Shinigami, and the visored, are actually a pretty tactile and intimate bunch. Living as long as they do and having such dangerous and traumatic lives, makes touch and comfort very important.
So it's not uncommon for Ichigo to disappear, finding someone to nap with or someone finding him. People are already drawn to Ichigo, getting to know him and all his quirks just makes them love him more.

KlubOutside Q&A 201-300 [Translation]
Translated by @reikorun
Q201.
2021.09.20
I like Luppi. I was absolutely overjoyed when Luppi made an appearance as a playable character in Blade Battlers 2nd which was released on PS2. In this game, Luppi's arms transform into tentacles and he could extend them to attack. I was surprised because there was no such depiction in the original work. Did sensei also supervise the settings for attacks in this game?
A201.
I can't recall so I probably didn't touch it. Luppi fighting with outstretched arms is so entertaining to me. I think that outlaw kind of feeling is one of the greatest qualities about games back then.
Q202.
2021.09.20
Of all the characters you have drawn, which one did sensei consider the most difficult to design?
A202.
Shun Shun Rikka, or rather the image of Orihime's abilities is the one thing which changed the most without quite clicking together. Initially, the story was that Orihime herself would grow Horns and sprout a tail, becoming sort of like a dragon girl.
Q203.
2021.09.20
Sensei, is there any character that you have drawn who makes you think "this guy is insufferable"?
A203.
There isn't. I draw while thinking “this is so scummy, that's the best thing about it.”
Q204.
2021.09.20
Does Kubo-sensei have any fetish? When I look at sensei's drawings, I can't help but speculate that you like slender wrists and long fingers, regardless of gender.
A204.
I don't have any particular fetish. I think it's because I draw illustrations using my own hands as reference.
Q205.
2021.09.20
Regarding Ichimaru Gin's eye color, I believe it was red around the early days of the anime, and then changed to blue in the latter half. What does Kubo-sensei think of his red eyes around this early stage? Also, as far as Kubo-sensei's canon is concerned, is it safe to assume Ichimaru Gin's eye color is blue?
A205.
In the early days, the checks were not being handed down to me so they ended up being red. For the record, the anime related mistakes were errors made by my editor at the time who didn't bring the checks to me. Because of this, I drew Gin with his eyes open on the cover of volume 20.
Tumblr media
Q206.
2021.09.20
Rukia's visuals in the live-action adaptation has become quite a hot topic of conversation, but was the matter reviewed by Kubo-sensei?
A206.
I had made it clear from the beginning that I would not be involved with the live-action project, so basically the whole thing was given the okay. Even regarding Rukia's hair, there was a conversation where they said "we'd like to go ahead with this" so I assumed there was a clear vision but it turns out there wasn't. I don't dislike the movie itself. Renji was extremely good.
Q207.
2021.09.27
Kubo-sensei, to what extent do you supervise merchandise and so on? I'm very happy that a lot of BLEACH merch has been released recently.
A207.
I feel like I'm supervising the things my editor can't make a judgment call on. Speaking of editors, they try their best to avoid handing over supervision duties to authors so that they can allow authors to concentrate on their creations, but after the series had ended, I had some free time so my editor has started bringing me more supervision duties than before.
Q208.
2021.09.27
If it were to come true, would you ever wish for a BLEACH anime adaptation, which faithfully follows the original work, to be broadcast by way of a remake?
A208.
I think I would.
Q209.
2021.09.27
It seems that the 2021 art exhibition will only be held at one location in Tokyo, but would it be possible for you to consider holding it at a variety of other locations? I'm really looking forward to it, but I'm sure there are many people across the country who live a considerable distance away and can't make it. It's a wonderful opportunity, so I think it will be easier to visit if it is hosted in various locations. I think it's a really difficult task, but I would be grateful if you could consider it just once.
A209.
I also want to show the exhibit to my parents, so I hope it will be held in Hiroshima.
Q210.
2021.09.27
Even though Byakuya and Ichika-chan never interact in the original work, I can easily imagine Byakuya being an uncle. I wonder why that is?
A210.
I can imagine it too. Byakuya's face whenever he tells her "kamawanu*"…. (*It's fine/I don't mind)
Q211.
2021.09.27
In volume 58, chapter 518, when Grimmjow was trying to interrupt Urahara and Ichigo's communication, Urahara instructed Orihime and Sado to "use the you-know-what to chase him back outside the tent", but what exactly was the "you-know-what"? What in the world is it, that it can throw Grimmjow off balance to such a degree…? I've been wondering about this for a long time.
A211.
It's a device which emits a sound that Grimmjow dislikes.
Tumblr media
Q212.
2021.09.27
Is Ninny-chan easier to draw than Noel-chan?? I was curious because there are more illustrations drawn of Ninny-chan!
A212.
This is because the clothes I want to draw tend to suit Ninny better. If you have big breasts, it's probably difficult to find clothes that suit you.
Q213.
2021.10.04
Ginrei is Byakuya's grandfather, but Kyōraku did not mention his name as a Shinigami who has been Captain for 100 years or more, so perhaps his career as a Captain was rather short?
A213.
I forgot to mention him! Let's just pretend it was Shunsui's blunder.
Q214.
2021.10.04
Do you find that characters of a certain age group are easy to draw, and conversely,  characters of a different age group difficult to draw?
A214.
I'm not very good at drawing children or toddlers.
Q215.
2021.10.04
I have been curious about Tsubokura Rin-kun of the Shinigami Research and Development Institute. Rin-kun's hair wasn't filled in when he was in monochrome, I thought for certain he had pale blonde or white hair. However, in the anime his hair was dark brown … so as far as you are concerned sensei, what colors did you imagine when designing him?
A215.
Was that the color it turned out to be? The image I had in mind is a pale sepia-like color.
Q216.
2021.10.04
Isn't it too bothersome to draw Grimmjow's hairstyle??
A216.
It's too bothersome isn't it? I wonder if you could give him a stiff pompadour instead?
Q217.
2021.10.04
Do you remember the first game you ever played?
A217.
It's "GeGeGe no Kitarō - Yōkai Daimakyō" which was purchased for me together with the Famicom unit itself.
Q218.
2021.10.04
Do you get asked to draw portraits by acquaintances?
A218.
I have always refused all portrait requests from both friends and celebrities.
Q219.
2021.10.11
What is Kensei's specialty dish?
A219.
It's "Whole Pumpkin Gratin". The highlight for him is the part where he gets to use his bare hands.
Q220.
2021.10.11
When I saw the Playlist on KlubOutside, I was surprised at the wide scope of Sensei's music choices. How do you discover new music?
A220.
SoundHound is my recommendation.
Q221.
2021.10.11
Is the bellyband worn by the Shinigami Men's Association the same as the one worn by Kirinji Tenjirō?
A221.
It's different. The bellyband Tenjirō wears was made by Senjumaru.
Q222.
2021.10.11
Now that I think of it, what does "Whiskrs" mean? I looked into it, and although there are some existing terms, I couldn't find anything in particular with regard to its meaning. I don't know whether sensei came up with the name or not, but perhaps it envelopes some special meaning?
A222.
It's a modified spelling of the word "whiskers". I came up with the name, or to be more specific, it's originally the name of a store that exists within the BTW universe. Though, this still has yet to make an appearance in the story.
Q223.
2021.10.11
When you go out, have you ever had a fan recognize you as Kubo-sensei and then attempt to speak with you?
A223.
A long time ago, another author wound up uploading a photo of a drinking party I was with to Twitter in the middle of the get-together, the restaurant was identified from the photograph and I was ambushed. It was late at night and I was on my way home alone, so it was really scary. That was probably the one and only time I was approached on the street.
Q224.
2021.10.11
Sensei, have you ever felt negatively about your own work in the past? I am currently creating works with the goal of becoming a designer, but unfortunately I feel embarrassed to display even the things I have created very recently in front of others. How do you overcome this from your perspective, sensei?
A224.
When I first became a manga artist, I felt embarrassed when my editor read my draft right in front of me. If you are creating something that personally satisfies you, you're just not accustomed to showing it to the average person, so you have no choice but to show it to a bunch of people and get used to it.
Q225.
2021.10.11
Have you ever had a character Awakened in Brave Souls? If so, I would like to know which character it is.
A225.
It's Fierce Battle Aizen. Though, it's more like I just ended up Awakening him when I was targeting others.
Q226.
2021.10.18
In the work, it was never once stated from a  reliable source that Tōshirō's Bankai comes undone once his petals dissipate, but what actually happened when his petals fell away during the period he had an imperfect Bankai?
A226.
Hitsugaya would injure himself after going through an imperfect growth.
Q227.
2021.10.18
When Rangiku had collapsed, Gin said "the fact that you passed out from hunger, it means that you have it too, right? Spiritual Power." and in Volume 11, there is a description from the exchange between Rukia and Renji that those with Spiritual Power feel hungry. But why didn't Hitsugaya realize he had powers until he dreamed of Hyōrinmaru?
A227.
Because his grandmother taught him that "only children get hungry.”
Q228.
2021.10.18
Why did Orihime's Rikka grow larger when Chad and Orihime returned from training in the final arc? I was curious because no one touched on the matter.
A228.
That's because Kisuke modified it to match her clothes (a cover was installed on the outside of the pins to make them difficult to break), but nobody said anything because they didn't think it was particularly worth mentioning.
Q229.
2021.10.18
When I was looking at "Hirako glasses" which was updated on the Gallery's Graffiti section, I became curious, what is that thing Hirako Shinji is holding in his mouth? Considering the hot drink in his left hand, maybe it's a cinnamon stick or something?
A229.
It's a cigarillo that he's holding in his mouth purely for fashion. I looked into it when I drew it but I couldn't find anything that matched the size I imagined.
Tumblr media
Q230.
2021.10.25
Good evening! The work titled "maturity" in the gallery that was released on April 3, 2021, could that be Mayuri-sama?
A230.
It's Mayuri. When I tried to type the title "mayuri", I accidentally tapped on the wrong suggestion and entered that instead, I left it as it is because it's a pain to change it.
Tumblr media
Q231.
2021.10.25
Did Ikkaku make the strap that Ichika has attached to her bag in JET?
A231.
That's right.
Q232.
2021.10.25
In BLEACH, how much influence did the ranking results of popularity polls have on a character's level of activity?
A232.
It's irrelevant. I'm the type who thinks "isn't that kind of thing discourteous to characters with few votes?"
Q233.
2021.10.25
Regarding the art exhibition, is it possible to increase the number of venues? I would absolutely love to participate, but due to the current situation, it is quite difficult to travel to Tokyo. Nevertheless, there are many fans of sensei and his work around the world. Although this is a very presumptuous request, I would be extremely grateful if you could consider it. Best regards.
A233.
I'll let my editor know! Murakoshi-saaan!!
Q234.
2021.10.25
Sensei, given that you play a lot of Dragon Quest, I was curious, is "Zaraki" - the district of Rukongai which Zaraki Kenpachi took as his name - based on the spell "Thwack" (*Zaraki in Japanese).
A234.
That's correct. Hold on, have I never mentioned this before?
Q235.
2021.11.01
Is there any reason why Kyōraku-san couldn't grace the cover of a tankōbon? I wanted him to have a cover.
A235.
It's just a coincidence. I wanted to draw it too.
Q236.
2021.11.01
Are Renji's tattoos only on the upper half of his body? Do they not continue down to his thighs?
A236.
They don't continue down. Wait? Have I never drawn his thighs before?
Q237.
2021.11.01
Is the double chant that Rukia recited during the fight against Aaroniero, simply the Sōren Sōkatsui chant split in two, with the Rikujōkōrō chant sandwiched in-between? Or does the substance of the chant change slightly depending on whether each is invoked independently or as a double chant?
A237.
It's a shortened version of Rikujōkōrō inserted between the full version of Sōren Sōkatsui. The effectiveness of the spells will increase if you perform both chants in full, but the time efficiency will decrease, so that would diminish the purpose of a two layered chant.
Q238.
2021.11.01
When a Zanpakutō is inherited from another person like in the case of Tōsen and Kenpachi, will the essence of its soul be overwritten? Or will it be made to mix with the essence of the previous owner?
A238.
Generally it is overwritten, but in some cases it may mix.
Q239.
2021.11.08
Were there any foreshadowing elements that made you go "ultimately, nobody noticed, huh?" up to the end of the BLEACH serialization? If so, is it likely there will be an opportunity to present it somewhere?
A239.
After I've finished playing a game or watching a movie, I like spending time alone thinking about what happened here and there or discussing with others about this and that. I want to create moments like that, so there are some parts where I try to depict things in a way that is not easily noticed, that's why unless someone correctly points it out, I try not to say much.
Q240.
2021.11.08
Why didn't Ryūken give Uryū the "ken" (弦) character in his name? ×[1]
A240.
Because he was thinking that he didn't want to let Uryū become Quincy.
Q241.
2021.11.08
How far have you progressed in Monster Hunter? If there is a monster that you like among the monsters that appear in this title, please tell me about it!
A241.
I haven't played in a while. In this title I like Goss Harag.
Q242.
2021.11.08
Can I post the photos from the gallery on social media??!?!?
A242.
I guess it's not allowed, going by the FC rules. You can post my dog from Deskside at least.
Q243.

Have you ever had to change a scene you originally wanted in order to make the depiction more in line with Jump guidelines? If so, which scene is it and how did you truly want to draw it?
A243.
During the time Jump had a large circulation, extremely graphic depictions were not allowed, so I had to redraw some of the places where Mayuri appears. The first thing I fixed was the scene where his squad members die in an explosion.
Q244.

There are characters for whom the theme music feels perfect, and on the other hand, others for whom the theme music is unexpected. By listening to each character's song, I feel like I am able to learn more about a character's inner being, it's so much fun! When deciding on a song, which does sensei place more importance on: the lyrics, or the melody?
A244.
It's only about the melody, sound and vocal quality. If it's the case that the lyrics also match, it's just a coincidence.
Q245.
2021.11.15
The market for e-books has grown larger, but when it comes to electronic and physical copy, people often say things like "you should buy the physical book!" What do you think?
A245.
Either one is fine. Even I read most of my manga electronically now. I like making paper books but I think physical paper copies will become more of a collector's item in the near future.
Q246.
2021.11.15
Kubo-sensei draws many animals, but are there any that you particularly enjoy drawing?
A246.
Right now it's dogs. Since owning a dog, I've started to grow fond of animals, so I feel like I may reach a point where I'm able to draw animals a little better now.
Q247.
2021.11.15
If there was an entrance song for Chad's boxing match, I wonder what kind of music it would be? If you have a song in mind that you can imagine for this scenario, please share the artist's name and song title with us.
A247.
It would be "Apache" by Michael Viner's Incredible Bongo Band.
Q248.

An illustration of Tatsuki wearing a Shihakushō exists, did you originally plan to have her transform into a Shinigami?
A248.
The one I drew for Jump Festa a long time ago, right? That's just an illustration I drew for Jump Festa that one time.

It seems like Rukia often wears dresses in the Human World, is there some reason why? If you have any particular preferences regarding the clothing choices of the BLEACH cast, please by all means, tell us about it!
A249.
I'll give you three example reasons for why they wear what they wear:
Orihime's body type makes it difficult for her to wear a dress.
I wanted to make a physically active Rukia stand out by making her wear clothes that are ill suited for physical activity.
Rukia was wearing hakama in Soul Society, so she's not familiar with fitted clothes.
Q250.
2021.11.22
You may not remember this … but during an autograph signing session, I was the one who announced "I'm getting married to my boyfriend who I initially became friends with through BLEACH!" We broke up at lightning speed after that! (Peace sign.) But sometimes we hang out and are on good terms as friends. Now my question is, what is sensei's favorite color?
A250.
My condolences. It's orange.
Q251.
2021.11.22
In the JET Q&A segment, you replied that the Vice-Captains of the 13th Division ten years later would be Sentarō and Kiyone, but I believe Kiyone was also the Vice-Captain of the 4th Division, so does that mean that they are concurrently serving as Vice-Captains?
A251.
That would be a mistake. Sentarō is the only Vice-Captain of the 13th.
Q252.
2021.11.29
Please tell us how Unagiya Ikumi-san and Ichigo met in the first place.
A252.
Their meeting came about when Ichigo delivered Kaoru, a lost child (and Ikumi's son) back to his mother. (Ikumi encountered them en route.)
Q253.
2021.11.29
Ichigo remembers the time Orihime carried her older brother Sora to the Kurosaki Clinic, but does Orihime remember meeting Ichigo at this time? When Ichigo entered high school, he noticed that Orihime was the girl from back then, does Orihime realize that it was Ichigo who greeted her at that moment?
A253.
Ichigo is the only one who remembers. Ichigo remembers that scene clearly because he felt a strong sense of one-way sympathy for Orihime, who was on the verge of losing her family.
Q254.
2021.11.29
Sensei, what's the one thing that makes you think "I'm second to none when it comes to this!"?
A254.
My Mickey Mouse impression.
Q255.
2021.11.29
I got the impression that Aizen-sama was often drinking black tea at Las Noches, but I wonder if likewise he drank Japanese tea during the time he was in Soul Society in the role of a Shinigami? Or is it that Western style food and drink like black tea also exist in Soul Society, and he has been a black tea enthusiast since long ago?
A255.
I drew that because I wanted a scene where Aizen eats the same thing as the Espada, but when it came to eating, there were some characters (like Ulquiorra) who I didn't want to depict in a dining scene (at that point), so I merely chose black tea as a compromise, therefore it's not that I was paying any particular attention to tea itself.

Is it possible for a member of the Gotei 13 to transfer to another Squad at their own behest? Recruitment of Captains or Vice-Captains from other Squads has been portrayed, but what is the situation like for ordinary soldiers?
A256.
It is possible if they make an application and obtain permission through their superior officer all the way up to the Captain. However, If they don't have any accomplishments their superior will reject it so it's difficult for an ordinary soldier.
Q257.
2021.12.06
Do you have a favorite coffee shop?
A257.
The place I frequent the most is Hoshino Coffee. I want to go to Komeda but I haven't had the chance to go yet.
Q258.
2021.12.06
What kind of life did Ikkaku-san and Shino-chan lead in Rukongai? I'm not sure if they're related by blood or not, but are they still family?
A258.
They're ordinary relatives. The Madarame family are a distinguished family and Ikkaku is treated like an oddball.
Q259.
2021.12.06
What do you order when you use services like Uber Eats for delivery?
A259.
The thing I order the most is Starbucks' White Mocha. By the way, I don't use Uber because I had a scary experience in the past.
Q260.
2021.12.06
I would like a YouTube channel or something to be created for Uni-chan.
A260.
If I could get someone to do the editing for me, then I would like to make one to document my dog's growth, but I don't think I would update it often….
Q261.
2021.12.13
If you were to spend a day with any character from "BLEACH" or "BURN THE WITCH", who would you like to be with?
A261.
I seriously thought about it, but maybe being with Balgo would be the easiest….
Q262.
2021.12.13
Speaking in terms of BLEACH characters, who would you compare the breast sizes of Noel-chan and Cquntnire-san to?
A262.
It's more or less that I'm drawing Noel like Orihime and Cquntnire like Nel.
Q263.
2021.12.13
What is Kubo-sensei's favorite rock or metal band?
A263.
I haven't been listening to much metal lately…during my high school days, I liked ROYAL HUNT and IN FLAMES.
Q264.
2021.12.13
This is closer to a request than a question, but I would like for you to issue and sell, the currently trending, NFTs with BLEACH illustrations! If that were to happen, I would definitely buy them!
A264.
I'll let my editor know about this also. Murakoshi-saaan!

I have a question regarding BTW Magic. In chapter 0.8 which is a one-shot, Noel-chan uses Absolute Dragon Shatter in Front London, but in chapter 1, numbered Pipers spells known as "Magic" made an appearance. As a premise, I believe that Magic and Absolute Dragon Shatter are alike (as they both use Witch Kits), I suspect that the reason why Noel-chan adopted this unnumbered attack method in Front London may be due to one of the following two points:
1. Magic is an attack method that utilizes the medium of Witch Kits to feed on a special energy similar to Reishi which exists only in Reverse London, on the other hand, Absolute Dragon Shatter is an attack method made for Front London, which does not require this special Reishi.
2. Given that it was an attack against a Disguiser Dragon who had remained hidden for ten odd years, Absolute Dragon Shatter was used as an arcane means and is considered the highest order of Magic or even a method surpassing Magic itself.
I'm really interested about the relationship between Magic and Absolute Dragon Shatter, will it be revealed within the story in the future!?
A266.
How insightful, I'm not sure whether or not I'll get to write about it in the future so I'll explain. In Front London, you can basically only use spells through items that are "charged" with magical power. The gun-pipe is not a rechargeable item, but Noel habitually fills it with magical power of her own accord, the release of that power is Absolute Dragon Shatter. Only Noel is able to use it.

The person Ichigo respects is Shakespeare. Given this fact, does it follow that this is a universe where eminent figures like Mozart and Napoleon existed?
A267.
Eminent figures certainly exist within the Soul Society too, but if I were to touch upon that, the manga would end up in a completely different place, so I didn't bring it up.
Q268.
2021.12.20
Do Szayelaporro's glasses have lenses? Since it's a mask, there should be no lenses so I assumed it was the frame alone. However in the anime, there were depictions of lenses reflecting the light and gleaming so I was confused!
A268.
There is no lens.

Were all the designs of the Zanpakutō which materialized in the Zanpakutō: The Alternate Tale arc, created by you, sensei?
A269.
I came up with some ideas and had an image in mind, Kudō-san designed them, I checked them. They pass for various reasons like being "just as I imagined!" or being "interesting because I wouldn't have come up with this design myself!"

It is mentioned in the novel "WE DO knot ALWAYS LOVE YOU", that when Shiba Kaien died in battle, Isshin was the Captain of Squad 10. Why didn't Rukia, who was already serving as a member of the Gotei 13 at the time, realize that Ichigo's father was Shiba Isshin when she was freeloading off of the Kurosaki family?
A272.
There are two reasons for this: for one, his outward appearance was completely different. Secondly, he was a Captain from another Squad and she was a regular soldier, so they didn't have much point of contact in the first place. To go further, given that there is no way for a Shinigami to have children with a human (only Kisuke knows how), the idea that a "Shinigami may become human and produce children in the Human World" did not occur to Rukia.

When Rukia entered her name into the family register, it's assumed that she did not change her last name, but now that she has become a Captain, it means there will be two Captain Kuchiki, so how do the other troops distinguish between the two when addressing them? Is it possible that she will revert to the Abarai surname?
A276.
Many of the troops differentiate between them by calling them Captain Kuchiki and 13th Captain Kuchiki.

Did Zangetsu eventually return to being a single blade? The "Ten Years Later" version of Ichigo was implemented in the social game - Brave Souls, and he wielded the "Zangetsu which emerged from a broken Tensa Zangetsu" as seen in the final stages of the Thousand-Year Blood War arc. Zangetsu which was reforged into two swords for Hollow and Quincy, became one as Tensa Zangetsu in Bankai, so I thought for sure it would return to two swords once the Bankai is disengaged.
However, does this mean that Zangetsu did not return to two swords due to the fact that after activating Bankai, Ichigo's Hollow and Quincy powers were absorbed by Yhwach, and that his Bankai was damaged among other factors? Or is it that it's possible for Ichigo to wield both the dual swords and the single sword if he so desires?
It may just be game original staging to begin with, but I was intrigued.
A277.
Since I haven't described this in detail nor do I plan to portray the matter any further, I'll give you an answer. The two blades of Zangetsu are the "sword" and the "sheath". The correct form of a Zanpakutō is one that has a sheath, and there are only two swords without one: Sayafushi and Zangetsu. What fixed Zangetsu into its "correct form" is the dual swords state, and in Bankai Zangetsu is placed back in its sheath, what emerged after that sheath was shattered is the "True Zangetsu". The shattered sheath was absorbed by Ichigo, so I think he is also able to return to dual blades if he wants to, but I suppose that depends on Ichigo himself.

2022.01.17
I've always wondered about this since reading volume 12, but was there a physical relationship between Aizen and Hinamori? I think it's more fitting for Aizen to not engage in this sort of thing, so I'm on the side that says it didn't happen.
A278.
I won't answer this because I think it'll be more fun to leave it unanswered.
Q279.
2022.01.17
Is Hōzukimaru a rare type of Zanpakutō which always requires the sheath for its Shikai.
A279.
That's right.
Q280.

Kubo-sensei, when it comes to TVs, are you in favor of wall-mounted? Or do you prefer freestanding?
A280.
Mine is attached to a wall storage unit with an extendable arm.

Upon being granted a letter, does the Schrift allow abilities to manifest based on the nature of an individual? Or does His Majesty already know what they are before granting it at the epithet stage.
A281.
Yhwach can see words almost as if they were engraved on the individual's body. Those who are bestowed Schrifts, which were previously lost through death in battle and so on, are discovered from the words engraved on them and then given power.
Q282.
2022.01.24
Do Yōkai and Yōsei exist in the world of BLEACH?

It would be more fun if they did.
Q283.
2022.01.24
A color version of the BLEACH e-books exist, but does Kubo-sensei decide on the color scheme and such?
A283.
There are parts that I check and parts that I don't (I only check what my editor asks me to check), but even the parts that I do were decided upon rapidly in the intervals between my work schedule during serialization, so when I look at them afterwards, I often come to think "was this the kind of color I chose??”
Q284.
2022.01.31
Sensei, if you had the opportunity to be involved in a project in the future, what sort of creative work would you like to be involved in? (Live-action film, animated movies, manga, dramas, YouTube, etc.)
A284.
If I could get involved with the story aspect, then it would probably be a game.
Q285.
2022.01.31
If you could actually sell any kind of merchandise at the fan club shop, what kind of items would you want to sell?
A285.
Bracelets with the text from the opening poems.
Q286.
2022.01.31
Is the reason why Uryū was not affected by Auswählen connected to Uryū's grandfather?
A286.
There's a bit of a complicated setup regarding this, but it might appear in the anime adaptation of the Thousand-Year Blood War arc. (Depending on the composition.)
Q287.
2022.02.07
It has already been decided that the Thousand-Year Blood War arc is getting an anime adaptation, but will there also be an anime adaptation of the side story novels? I'd especially like to see "WE DO knot ALWAYS LOVE YOU" in the anime which depicts Rukia and Renji's marriage and the progress of Ichigo and Orihime's relationship.
A287.
Ah, I see. If there is enough room, then it may be possible.
Q288.

Who was the one to slash Rukia from behind during the first invasion by the Sternritter?
A289.
The plan is to depict this in the anime version.
Q290.

Is the giant spoon used by Hikifune Kirio of Squad Zero actually her Zanpakutō?
A290.
That's correct.
Q291.
2022.02.14
During the performance of the ROCK MUSICAL BLEACH, Kubo-sensei personally talked to Tsuchiya-san, who played the role of Gin, about Gin's true intentions and purpose, as he was having a difficult time interpreting the character, and Gin's true intentions had not yet been revealed within the story at the time. I remember there was an episode which went something like that, but in so doing, did you also discuss everything which occurred with regard to Rangiku and Aizen? Also, did you not have any reluctance to divulge information which has not yet been revealed in the story?
A291.
I feel that we talked about things like how Gin viewed each character rather than the story itself. If it is necessary for the performance, then there is a possibility that I may also convey undisclosed information to the voice actors so it's not limited to this particular occasion.
Q292.
2022.02.14
Is the "table with English language BLEACH quotes suspended inside its transparent legs" which you wrote about in the cover flap comment of Volume 44, still being used? I would love to see photos of sensei's favorite furniture and more!
A292.
I use it when I'm composing my drafts at home. The tabletop is in disarray, so I hope a photo of the legs will do.

With regard to the role of a Shinigami, it involves cleansing Hollows of their sins by way of a Zanpakutō and sending them to Soul Society in peace, but was this role simply to extinguish Hollows until Nimaiya Ōetsu showed up?
A293.
It was only after the creation of the Gotei 13 that the role of a Shinigami was properly defined.
Q294.
2022.02.21
At what age did Chad get his tattoo? Was it when he moved to Mexico? Or did he get it inked in his own hometown in Okinawa? I would be grateful if you could tell us.
A294.
He got his tattoo in Mexico when he was 9 years old.
Q295.
2022.02.21
I heard that the Lost Agent of the Shinigami arc concluded earlier than planned, is that true? If so, I'd like you to tell us about the story you were actually planning to write.
A295.
You mean the rumor that I was planning to compose an episode for all the classmates but I got bored and decided against it? If so, then it's true. I feel like I mentioned that in a character book or something.
Q296.

In the BLEACH PS2 game "Bleach: Erabareshi Tamashii", techniques such as "Hadō #20: Shōtenkyū" and "Hadō #26: Gōensai" made an appearance, but were these Kidō Kubo-sensei's ideas or the creations of the game staff? If it's the former, I'd also like to know how to write it in kanji!
A297.
I had no involvement with that so they're the creations of the game staff.
Q298.

I really love the relationship between Ichigo and the store manager, Unagiya Ikumi, and you can sense in the air how Ichigo suddenly turns back into a child. Please tell us if there was anything you paid extra attention to when creating Ikumi-san.
A298.
Ikumi is a character that was born because I wanted to create a place for Ichigo where he could be himself outside the Kurosaki home due to a plot development, that is, the sudden loss of a place where he belongs in the Lost Agent arc.
Q299.

In "BURN THE WITCH", it seems that each division is armed with a different type of weapon, but in the event that they change affiliations, like how Bruno encouraged the witches to do in the story, do they undergo training with new weapons?
A299.
They train with new weapons. It is also among the Director's faculties to ascertain an individual's suitability for a weapon and then offer an invitation to them.
Q300.

john wayne.
ichigo kurosaki x fem.reader
notes: unedited; post lost agent arc, but pre thousand year blood war arc; may be a little canon divergent. a self indulgent story where the reader doesn't know whether she's afraid of him- or in love with him.
{ baby, he's got to be crazy | living like he's john wayne | always facing the world, a-chasing the girl | baby, he's got to be crazy }
there were moments where ichigo kurosaki absolutely intimidated and frightened you, and you did all you could to avoid him like the plague whilst spending your school years at karakura high.
in your eyes, ichigo was someone who always got into fights and had the appearance of the usual delinquent. his orange hair was difficult to ignore, seeming to capture the essence of a sunset itself. despite never once sharing a class with him, the times that you did pass by him, his features were always drawn up in a scowl.
sometimes, being in the same room with ichigo felt stifling. it was as though there was a power felt emanating from him, one that you couldn't quite explain or put a finger on. all you knew was that he was strong- much stronger than he let on.
as you walked through the hallways after finishing your club duties for the day, you cling to your bag while looking out the window. the skies were bathed in warm, gentle hues of the sunset, and the sight was so beautiful to you that you had to take a chance to stop and admire it.
while looking at the setting sun, your mind wanders to ichigo, feeling your heart twist a bit in anticipation while remembering the conversation you last had with your friends.
you recall a time when you hung out with your friends, orihime and tatsuki, simply studying for your respective exams when orihime cheerfully called out your name and asks, "ne, what do you think of kurosaki-kun?"
you look back at her with your eyes wide, "huh? why would you ask me about him all of a sudden?"
a strange expression crosses her features, but she simply shakes her head, appearing sheepish while placing a strand of her red hair behind her ear, "well, i was just wondering, that's all! it's just, you seem to be doing a lot to avoid him..."
you felt your cheeks turn warm in embarrassment, "i have not been avoiding him! w-well, not intentionally, at least." you cough, trying to hide how awkward you felt. you didn't think anyone would notice how you spent most of your high school years not interacting with ichigo at all, managing to reach your final year without a hitch.
"why? did that jerk do something to you?" tatsuki was quick to come to your defense, "you can tell me if that idiot did something to upset you, and i will gladly have a word with him."
you try to diffuse the situation, holding up your hands in protest while calming your friends down, "no please, tatsuki, there's no need to do anything to him! it's just... i don't know, something about him...scares me."
your friends remain silent, waiting for you to explain. you swallow thickly while running a hand through your own hair, "he hasn't done anything wrong, but sometimes, when he's near, i can feel his presence. there's something... foreboding about him, i guess. like, something that makes him not all... human."
the warmth felt against your cheeks becomes even more prominent, making you shake your head as you slapped both of your hands against them. "please, i'm sorry, don't tell kurosaki i said all of that. i know it makes no sense and-"
"no no, that's totally understandable! b-but still, kurosaki isn't that scary at all!"
"i agree with orihime, he's really a dummy who doesn't know how to act normally around people sometimes-"
"and he has a heart of gold, with his desire to protect everyone."
oddly enough, both orihime and tatsuki did their best to convince you that ichigo was just a normal guy with an unfriendly face, and you had to hold back your giggling, promising them that you'd try to speak to ichigo when the chance came up.
thinking back on it now, you kind of regretted your promise to them. something about ichigo made you so nervous, and you found that you couldn't think straight when he was around. you sigh and rest your head against the window, playing various scenarios of you greeting ichigo, just to see if you could do it or not.
"hey, are you okay?"
in the midst of your reverie, you freeze, hearing that familiar deep voice calling out to you. moving your head away from the window, you look to your right to see ichigo himself. he wore his usual school uniform while placing a hand within the confines of his pockets, his posture slightly slouched when he casually approaches you.
"are you feeling sick? do you need to go to the infirmary?"
you couldn't breathe, meeting with his brown eyes as you could see a softness in them you had never seen before. had he always looked this beautiful? and just why was your heart suddenly racing now?
whether it was out of fear, or something else, you couldn't say for sure.
when he was directly in front of you, you found that you lost all confidence, quickly apologizing to him with every intention of leaving him. your mind was a muddled mess, and you felt so flustered that you didn't know what to do.
you merely took two steps away from him when you felt something pulling you back, encircling your wrist as you were trapped against a lithe form and the wall.
ichigo's scowl was back, and he kept you against the wall. "are you afraid of me?"
you truly felt mortified at that moment, unable to say a word to him as you felt dizzy from his proximity. you could smell the faint scent of his cologne, and his body heat was seeping into you, making it harder for you to concentrate.
your heart was beating painfully out of your chest, and you couldn't say a word to him as you ended up looking away from him. ichigo ends up clicking his tongue, finally pushing himself away from you. with ichigo no longer pressing you up against the wall, you look at his steadily retreating form, not daring to move until he was out of your sight.
you waited for several minutes, remaining in the hallway while mentally berating yourself. why did you have to feel so weird when it came to him? what made you feel this way, and were you really afraid of him-
or was it something else?
you were so caught up in your thoughts that you didn't realize just how low the sun was beginning to set. with a gasp, you take a hold of your bag and made a mad dash toward the exit, practically running home in hopes that nightfall wouldn't come.
your breathing was labored, with your footsteps pounding across the concrete streets of karakura town. all you wanted to do was go home and be alone with your thoughts, but something stops you from moving forward.
you halt your movements, frowning as you strained your ears to hear your surroundings. you swore that as you ran, something was following you.
blood was rushing through your ears as you could feel the adrenaline pumping through your veins, initiating your fight or flight response.
that's her...
a cruel voice echoes into the air, filling your veins with ice as you shakily take a step forward, feeling something ominous coming from behind you.
this has to be her... his heart.
if we destroy what is most important to him, we'll destroy his heart...
you gasp and tried to force your legs to move forward once more, now running across the empty streets of karakura when a slash was felt tearing through the fabric of your uniform. you whimper, looking behind you to see a thin slice of blood appearing on the side of your abdomen.
a sudden tremor was what ultimately brings you back down to your knees with a scream, the pain all but masked due to the anxiety and fear that was felt coursing through your veins. as you were looking forward, you were able to make out two, large fuzzy shadows. a skeletal mask hid their features, and you felt an all-consuming sense of despair coursing through you-
because this...this was how you were going to die.
the looming shadows were seen leaning down, and you could only bring yourself to close your eyes, awaiting for the painful death-
"NO! NOT HER!"
your throat becomes dry when you hear the sounds of his voice, forcing you to look up when you saw ichigo dressed in all-black while wielding a thin blade. the shadows face him, ready to attack when he brings his sword down on one of the shadows. it swiftly goes down in one hit while ichigo flows gracefully to the next shadow, not even giving it a single chance to reach you as he pierces through its mask.
a shrill cry echoes throughout the night, and your heart was still pounding with fear even as ichigo's body shielded you from the destruction of those shadow like creatures.
time slowed down to a crawl, and only when you could no longer see the outline of those shadows did you fall to your knees. your ears were ringing, and you found it hard to focus, unable to react even when ichigo was calling out your name.
a familiar warmth was felt enveloping you in a gentle embrace, and you found yourself falling back against a hard chest. your eyes were distant, unable to truly see ichigo. his frown was back, and you heard him let out a soft curse before leaning in closer to you, placing his lips against yours in a chaste kiss.
the sensation of his chapped lips against yours was what ultimately brings you back down to earth, grounding you as you responded eagerly to his kiss. with a soft sigh of his name, you allowed your lips to slot perfectly against his, threading your hands through his sunset colored hair while basking in his sudden kiss. as ichigo warms you, you no longer felt like gravity was the one grounding you, but rather it was him.
when he feels your response, ichigo pulls away from the kiss and smiles down at you. you feel the way the calloused pad of his thumb trace at your bottom lip, gaze achingly sweet when he asks, "are you okay?"
you could only manage a nod, making ichigo give you another one of his soft smiles when he stands back to his full height still holding you. "alright, let me take you home."
"wait...!" your voice comes out as hoarse due to your prior screams, and you had to wet your lips to get rid of the dryness felt against them. "i...i still feel scared... can i please stay with you...?"
the kindness was so evident in his gaze, and you found yourself wondering why you were so afraid of him in the first place. he simply tightens his hold on you, simply answering your pleas with a simple "yeah."
holding you close to his chest, ichigo ends up taking you somewhere safe, running with an almost inhuman speed towards the town park. the cold air was felt whipping through your hair, and you could do little but continue to cling to him whilst he ran. with the moon and stars now shining brightly in the sky, ichigo reaches the park and settles down against the plush grass while keeping you on his lap.
he says nothing, simply looking up at the sky while running his hands through your hair. meanwhile, you kept staring up at his beautiful features with a million questions running through your mind, leaving you feeling overwhelmed and speechless.
your name coming out from ichigo's lips in a soft spoken tone breaks you out of your thoughts, with you meeting his gaze once more. his brown eyes were gentle, and you could feel his thumb gracing at your cheeks in a tender caress.
"i'm glad that i was able to save you."
you felt your heart racing again, with your hands clinging to the front of his dark robe, "kurosaki...?"
he hums, brushing his lips against your head of hair, silently coaxing you to go on.
"d-do you... do you happen to... i mean, by any chance- do you like me?" you blurt out as quickly as possible, your words coming out as a bit rushed when you clench your eyes shut, feeling afraid of what his answer might be.
ichigo was silent for several seconds before he slowly begins speaking once more. "you know... a while back, when my old man was talking about how he and my mother met... he told me that my mother was like his sun- that she became the center of his entire universe. and i didn't understand it back then..."
you open your eyes, feeling ichigo tracing his lips against the shell of your ear. when you felt him nuzzling against your skin, the sensation being achingly sweet to you, was when he whispers, "but now, i finally understand it."
his large hand was felt on your chin, making you look up at him. "i always noticed you. you were close to inoue and arisawa, and there was always this desire i had to protect you... to shield you from all the dangers of the world."
"but you were afraid of me...and i didn't want to scare you anymore. yet at the same time, i didn't want to leave you alone. i never wanted you to get hurt or feel pain because of me."
ichigo's eyes narrow, and you could feel the back of his hand gracing at your cheek. "i guess what i'm trying to say is that... you've become the center of my universe... that you've always been the center of my universe."
your heart was bursting at the seams, finally filling with an unbidden happiness as you allowed you to realize the truth of your emotions-
perhaps deep down, you knew that he loved you, but was too shy or insecure to truly believe it. yet now, with ichigo's earnest expression and true confession, you felt a joy that was indescribable.
so instead of conveying how you felt for ichigo with words, you allowed your actions to reply back to his confession. with a whisper of his name, you lean up and allow your lips to meet with his in a sweet kiss, one that let him know just how much he had become the center of your own universe as well.

a.n. - 'john wayne' by cigarettes after sex is such a fitting song for ichigo kurosaki. writing this brought out so many good memories of all the daydreams i had about him when i was younger... 🥹 i miss him ♡

織姫
Tumblr media
cw. f!reader (afab), canon divergent, manga spoilers, established relationship, dissociation, canon-typical violence, non-linear storytelling
pairing. makima x reader
notes. part of the man is a blazing star universe so i would give the two previous fics a read before diving into this one as it is key to understanding everything here. in a way, orihime 「織姫」 is a love letter to what was originally a duology so i hope old readers enjoy spotting the references! i had a lot of fun experimenting with detailing, when not to use it and even when only relying on only dialogue to carry a scene and i hope the payoff works in my favor.

Dawn is a time of day you appreciate more when you don’t have work.
While you ordinarily complained how the hours in those days vanished before you could enjoy them, dawn has always been the exception. Your early mornings have always moved slower compared to the rest. It’s a slow, quiet whisper you value fully, especially now as you enjoy the sound of the waves as you walk your assorted mix of pets on the beach. You’re sure the two of you look like quite the pair with your seven dogs on their leashes and one of your two cats in a leashed harness.
Makima is a woman bathed in the light of dawn.
You release a sigh of satisfaction, watching your girlfriend go ahead of you as your dogs stretch their legs.
It’s in how the morning rays dapple her form in near perfect circles. In the hues of her pale carmine hair that cascades across her bare skin. It’s even in the gold of her eyes, much like the yellow sun that peeks through the horizon.
It’s strange to think that this time two years ago, Makima had been a colleague you couldn’t stand to be around. Now you’ve willingly allowed a string of fate the exact shade as her hair to bind you both in the most irrevocable of ways.
“I won’t use my power on you, in exchange, we have to stay together forever. We’ll eat a lot together, sleep together, and live a happy life together.”
The contract of a lifetime ー marriage in its own right.
Gone are the days of patrols, weapons and putting your life on the line to ensure the safety of the general populace.
How peculiar this entire journey has been.
You will never pretend your reasons for joining the Bureau were pure of heart; you’d never dreamed of glory or protecting others.
For Makima, you’d gladly put your entire being on the line.
It goes against the nature of the Control Devil to have equal relationships.
Makima has one with you.
Moral ambiguities be damned. I believe in you. It’s a vow you know you will take to your grave as you watch your lover pause, wondering what has caught her excitable dogs’ eyes. Bagheera’s crooked tail tip twitches in interest, bounding forward with clumsy footsteps and you chuckle as you increase your pace so the cat can see it too. Tora, on the other hand, is comfortable in her backpack carrier. This is how mornings are done in your family. “What’s got the troublesome octet so excited?”
“They’ve found a crab,” her voice is amused and mellifluous. Crab sounds like a wonderful idea for dinner and you’re sure she has the same idea when you hear dulcet giggles slip from her person. Like a child, Makima turns to face you with her lips stretched into a delighted smile.
It’s then that carmine suddenly becomes jet and there’s a mole underneath her left eye that wasn’t there before.
Ah.
“[First], I want crab for dinner!” Nayuta beams brightly.
“Damn you have expensive taste,” you tease in spite of your stupor. Right. Those memories aren’t mine.
The dogs you walk remain but all but two of five of them are different from the seven you could have sworn were with you just a moment ago. Bagheera isn’t with you either, succumbing to his health issues years ago when you were still a child. All that remains of the cats you adopted is Tora, an old lady you left at home to snore on the couch with the Power's new kitten.
“Have ‘em,” Himeno told you shortly after you moved in with her in the quiet town of Shonai. “They were yours anyway. Oh, but Meowy’s always been Power’s.”
The ringed eyes are the only part of Nayuta that is the same as the woman from your memories. The eyes and the braid you know she'll twist her hair into later.
You wish the image of that woman would disappear.
Thankfully Nayuta is seemingly unaware of your dilemma. “I’ll get some in a few checks,” you promise and you receive an impish grin in return. You smile instinctively, your earlier troubles assuaged.
It’s a magic only Nayuta possesses.
The magic is disturbed when one of the dogs yelps in pain and Nayuta guffaws at the display of a small crab latched onto its nose.
You wonder if you had grown up surrounded by humans if you would find her reaction unsettling. As one raised among devils and fiends, however, Nayuta’s reaction is only standard even as she yanks the crab away with ease and tosses it into a returning wave. “That’ll teach you not to play with crabs,” Nayuta laughter subsides into chuckles as she pets the pup’s head.
You love the dawn.
How the wind runs its invisible fingers through Nayuta's hair much like a musician strumming the strings of a harp.
How the light of the sun crests Nayuta's head much like a halo although you're sure the god of such beings will likely you spurn you for the comparison. How ironic that a devil is the closest comparison you have to the opposing pole.
When it’s like this, it’s easy to pretend you and Nayuta are the last ones on earth on this beach.
There are no devil hunters, no other humans and there are no other devils either.
You digress that the truth of your reality is fine, however.
You work 6 out of 7 days in a week at a local convenience store all the while Nayuta pursues a degree through online courses at Tohoku University. Himeno goes to the pub once or twice every other week to indulge in the non-alcoholic beverages her sister allows her to drink. Even Power somehow manages a steady job helping Ichika sell the vegetables she grows in the garden. A well-placed hat and even a Fiend can blend in to some extent.
Work is limited for a Fiend in hiding from the government.
Everything is limited when it’s the Control Devil remaining out of the government’s sight.
“Do you ever wish you could actually go on campus?”
“Not particularly.”
Nayuta’s never really been a people person though, so you suppose it truly doesn’t matter to her whether she can physically attend Tohoku or not. So you subsequently deduce that she likely won’t care that she’ll be limited to working remotely for the rest of her life either.
Nayuta fingers dug into the back of your shirt, body tense. Her abilities required she believe one was lesser than her for her to order them, that was impossible when you were both scared out of your wits cornered with nowhere to go.
The woman kept an eye on you both, weapon drawn in one hand, phone in the other. “I found the C-”
Unwittingly, your mind drifts back to the red-haired woman as you watch the loose strands of Nayuta’s hair dance in the wind. Makima.
You don’t know much about the previous incarnation of the Control Devil save for what tidbits you allowed Himeno and Kishibe to tell you. Himeno did her best to sugarcoat it but blunt as Kishibe was, you know for certain that Makima wasn’t the kindest individual.
“ー kept her on a tight leash when she was alive,” the drunkard raised his flask to his lips for the tenth time in the three minutes. Every fiber of your being burns with a hatred for a man that isn’t wholly your own at the comment. “But even with that leash, she was a ticking time bomb. So keep this one on a leash that’s even tighter. Otherwise, she’ll turn out like Makima again.”
Makima is Makima, Nayuta is Nayuta.
ー is ー, you’re you.
“Hey, Nayuta, pick a country,” you call for the one you love. The one you love. The proof is when she turns and Nayuta is all that remains. You don't hate Makima. You don’t think it’s possible to hate any incarnation of the Control Devil. But Makima is who ー loved and their sun had long since fallen. “One that doesn’t have a devil hunting association in it.”
“Seychelles,” Nayuta doesn’t miss a beat, grinning the devilish grin you adore all the while. “We still need to have our honeymoon.”
A dirty sheet turned into a veil rests on jet black hair while you recited your on-the-fly vows.
“Yeah,” you chuff as you rest your hands in your pocket. “I owe you one, huh?”
A honeymoon and the whole wedding too.
“What’s this new job of yours again?”
“I got a gig cashiering the next town over,” you pinch the green collar of your uniform as a physical display of your employment.
Himeno’s one eye closes as she hums thoughtfully into her mug, “what about your job at the konbini?” Her smile is as plastered as wet cement.
“It doesn’t pay as much,” you shrug. It isn’t the first time Himeno has made some sort of stir about your sudden change in employment, it likely won’t be the last. “If I’m gonna get paid to kiss ass all day, I at least wanna get paid more than chump change.”
“You make chump change as a cashier no matter where you work,” you choose to ignore Himeno’s comment. When her sister’s sharp stare of disapproval lands on the former devil hunter, you know the conversation will be dropped for now. Thanks, Ichika.
Ichika smiles kindly, always a touch too gentle and understanding. It’s easy to appreciate the woman’s soft-hearted nature. “Well, I for one, am glad you have a pay raise even if it’s somewhere else,” the dark-haired woman tells you. “We both are,” her soft blue eyes dare her sister to disagree with her sentiments. Himeno is smart enough not to voice against them. Gentle as Ichika is, Himeno will always crumble at the threat of her anger. “What time will you be home? We should eat something special to celebrate!”
“Crab sound good this weekend?” At your suggestion, Nayuta perks with interest for the first time since breakfast began. You bump your knees together lightly. With what you’ll be making now, you can afford to buy her crab every night. “I can pick some up before I head back after my last shift of the week.”
On the other side of the table, Power is just as interested in the suggestion. “Crab,” the horned woman inquires with a fiendish grin. “Finally something worthy of my taste buds! Servant,” the Blood Fiend’s strawberry-colored locks whip around in her excitement. It’s only barely doused by the unamused look Himeno shoots in her direction. Barely. “Human,” an improvement. “Make a crab dish for us!”
Ichika takes Power’s demands in stride, “I think crab would be a nice treat. Don’t you?”
Matching blue gazes share a quiet conversation before Himeno relents with a tired smile, “I guess crab isn’t that bad an idea.”
Power guffaws with prideful glee as Nayuta’s expression twists into impish satisfaction. Her few-weeks-old dream of crab will finally be fulfilled. A peaceful glow washes over you as you take in the sight of her drinking miso soup from a finely polished bowl.
Himeno’s house is a far cry from the abandoned building you both once called home.
The wooden floor is clean, not dirtied from even filthier shoes and haphazardly drawn images made with sharp rocks used as chalk. In this house, you have three meals a day. The limit to what you can take is no longer reduced to only what you’re able to carry.
It’s a life you always dreamed you’d one day share.
Although admittedly you never accounted for the additional humanoid bodies living in it.
“Well, I gotta get goin’,” you slurp the last of your black tea before wiping your lips with the back of your hand. “See you guys later,” you stack your dishes neatly atop one another, waving off Ichika’s attempt to take them from you. “See you later,” you tell Nayuta warmly, pressing your lips against hers for only a  moment to spare yourself from feeling one of Power’s dirty napkins hitting your shoulder. “Have a good day at school.”
“Call me for lunch,” to the untrained ear, it’s a demand. To one as experienced as yourself in the language of Nayuta, it’s a request.
It’s an uncannily peaceful morning for a household of humans, fiends and devils. One that religious zealots would lose their minds over.
On an ordinary morning you yearn for the comfort of your and Nayuta’s bed and letting the hours roll by as you embark on your quest for work. This time, your stomach twists with discomfort as you hit the freeway.
It’s nearly an ordinary morning.
As you promptly pass the exit that actually would have led to the town next door, you know the last chance for ‘ordinary’ has sailed. The nearly three hours long drive it takes to get to Sendai is long enough for you to stew in your guilt. You park inconspicuously near the woodsy outskirts of the city, thumbs resting on the steering wheel.
It’s too late to turn back now, you remind yourself. I’m doing this for us.
Two adult passports.
Visas.
Housing.
Food.
Permanent Residency.
You’d never be able to save for it all with the chump change you’d been making at the local konbini. Nor would Nayuta ever be able to live a free life under the restrictions placed on you by those who took you in. There is no major country in the world Nayuta can be free in.
Nayuta had been a stranger, once upon a time. A stranger who never existed in your conscience and whose life you never perceived.
Then your eyes met and you experienced the birth of a universe.
You’ll gladly put your entire being on the line.
“Do you want to protect Nayuta?” Your grip tightens for a moment longer before finally reaching for the duffle bag you hid underneath the passenger seat.
“Well yeah, obviously.”
“Then follow two rules. Stay away from major cities and don’t join the Public Safety Devil Hunters.”
You've technically broken only one of Kishibe’s rules.
Your parents used to take the first day of school very seriously.
It was always a momentous time when you went up a grade level. Photos were snapped constantly and after the first day ended successfully, there’d always be some sort of celebratory dinner. When you saw Ichika tearfully take in yours and Nayuta’s uniforms, you can tell things in this household were going to go the same way.
“The two of you are starting to become young women,” she smiled sappily, polaroid camera already in hand. “It feels like it was only yesterday you two came here and now you’re already going to school! You’re both so beautiful!”
Nayuta certainly was, you wanted to say. Her chin-length black hair now stretched to the upper middle of her back, framing her gold-colored eyes perfectly. But that would only make Ichika gush further about how you both were equally gorgeous like a proud mother.
You’d have thought you and Nayuta were infants when you were brought to this house with how Ichika coo’d and aww’d. Except the two of you were already thirteen when you’d come to the Nagano household and a year later, the school term had been going on for a few months. It had been unclear if you’d be starting high school or being held back. Donned in the dark brown uniform of Higashi Middle School, you knew the answer.
Even Power had on a uniform, refusing to be left out of the celebrations.
“That’s right, our little women,” Himeno laughed, holding an energy drink like it was a beer can. “Smile for the camera!”
You were able to turn the corners of your lips into a smile but, if anything, Nayuta’s scowl only deepened.
“Nayuta,” Himeno sighed in frustration. “I know you’re upset that you and [First] are in different classes but we’ve been through this. It’ll be good for you. Ichika,” she looked to her sister for support, blue eyes pleading. “back me up on this.”
Nagano Younger placed the camera down with an empathetic smile, “don’t you want to make friends?”
Ringed yellow eyes practically glowed as Nayuta sharply looked at the woman, “what do we need friends for? All [First] needs is me.”
The Nagano sisters shared a look that was a mixture of concern and exasperation. The primary debate of the weekend had finally reared its ugly head just before you were due to leave. Before either of them could say anything to placate their youngest ward, however, Power's manic laughter filled the air. When she had her fill of amusement, she rubbed the bottom of her nose as her laughs faded into chuckles. “The Great Power was once this immature,” Once? “Nayuta!” She points a sharp nail in the direction of the only other non-human in the house. “Stop behaving like a child! You’re reflecting poorly on my teachings!”
“Bark like a dog.”
Power dropped on all fours and barked the moment the demand left Nayuta’s mouth. The actual dogs in the house went into an excited frenzy, barking alongside with her.
“What did I tell you about taking your powers out on people because you’re upset,” all hints of playfulness left Himeno’s body in favor of displeasure. “Nayuta,” she placed her energy drink on the table at the young devil’s silence. Ichika sighed quietly, placing her camera down before she quietly turned to the kitchen.
“The two of you need to learn how to interact with people. Outside of the house,” the former devil hunter took a glance at the barking fiend. When she sighed, you knew Himeno likely thought that even the interactions within the house needed some work. “Now hurry up and turn Power back.” Nayuta directed her gaze to the nearest window instead. “Nayuta, I’m not asking.”
“Just wait a moment,” Ichika’s lark-like voice rang from where she went about her business. Hurriedly, she arrived with two bowls of ice cream in hand. With her sharp sense of smell, it captured Nayuta’s attention immediately and she held out her hands expectantly. “Don’t you have something you need to do first, young lady?”
Nayuta blinked, seemingly confused as she followed her gaze to where Power crawled on the floor. In the blink of an eye, the barking stopped. “Thank you,” Ichika nodded in satisfaction before she finally handed you both a bowl each, winking at you knowingly.
Power returned to her feet, cheeks hot with anger but whatever she was going to say, she stopped in her tracks the moment you held the bowl of ice cream Ichika gave you directly under her nose. It only took a beat before the Blood Fiend grinned, lifting the bowl as if it's her newest kill. “Gahahaha! I suppose I can accept your humble offerings,” you snorted quietly at the display. If anyone was the child in this house, it was her.
Himeno threaded her fingers through gray and navy blue hair with a whiny sigh, “everyone in this house wants me to age, Ichika. And we can’t just use ice cream to bribe her into behaving! Why does she get ice cream if I don’t get to keep beer!”
“Because your doctor said to either quit or be placed on a liver transplant list so you’d have a head start,” Himeno withered under her sister’s less-than-amused glare. “And I hope you savor that energy drink. Remember what we agreed on - one can per month.”
“And it’s always the smallest size possible,” Himeno grumbled, looking much like a child herself. If you hadn’t known who the older sister was, you would have assumed otherwise. “And low in sugar so it tastes absolutely disgusting.”
Ichika ignored the jab, knowing her sister would drink the disgusting low-sugar drink regardless. “Nayuta,” she began thoughtfully. “I know how important it was for you that you and [First] be in the same class. But there are going to be times when you have to interact with other people and we want you to be able to navigate those times with ease. There are going to be more opportunities for you both to be in the same class, we just want you to be okay with times where you aren’t.” When Ichika looked to you for assistance, Nayuta’s golden gaze turned to you as well.
We can socialize and be in the same class at the same time, can’t we? Truthfully, you hadn’t been thrilled with the class assignments either. It had been you against the world before you met Nayuta when you were left alone on the streets of Beijing. Not knowing what would happen to you with your parents gone, school didn’t seem all too important. You think you might have liked school, you truthfully can’t remember. You even had friends, good friends. You couldn’t seem to remember their faces either. Too much had happened to hold onto those memories.
The last time you’d been in school, you were seven.
It took a fair bit of home study for you and Nayuta to be ready for even middle school. If you had to go to school again, you wanted it to be by each other’s side. The school administration had different thoughts, it seemed. But underneath Ichika’s hopeful eyes, you couldn’t bring yourself to spurn her goodwill. You liked Ichika, she was kind. “If we’re in different classes, we can go on dates for lunch. And I can walk you to class each day, like in the movies.”
It’s only when she heard those words that Nayuta looked even remotely enthused about your separation.
“See?” Ichika’s smile widened in her appreciation.
“Alright,” Nayuta leaned against you, not entirely pleased but no longer entirely upset.
It was a solid victory as far as Ichika was concerned.
The rest of the morning went smoothly. Nayuta and Power indulged in their ice cream and when they were finished, Ichika indulged in getting her celebratory photo. Power held her peace sign while yours and Nayuta’s arms were linked tightly. Lunches packed and promises of an extravagant dinner made, the two of you finally left home hand in hand.
“I know damn well that a Fish Devil costs more than that,” you scowl at your employer. “I didn’t drive over two hours to Sendai for you to stiff me on the price. I’ll take this to Yamaguchi if I have to.” That’s the problem with these underground devil hunting jobs. If someone wants to short change you, they will short change you. It’s been five months since you’ve begun your dealings with Nishida and the oaf never ceases trying to pull the wool over your eyes.
“Come on now, [Last],” the slimy businessman raises his hands as if placating a child. He looks more like a Pimp Named Slickback with his crinkled purple suit than someone who works in devil hunting. You suppose one working under the table can’t complain. “We’re old friends, aren’t we?”
“Tell me that when we’ve known each other for a decade,” you point your gloved finger against the desk two, three, four times. Each thudding strongly against the tabletop rattling the bloody axe you’ve placed on it. “550,000 yen. I don’t want even a decimal less.”
Nishida’s lips curl in dismay, “have I ever told you that you’re a real bitch to work with?”
You’ll continue to be one until you’ve gathered all you could, “acknowledgement from the queen of bitches is a real honor. I want my check.”
He rolls his eyes and calls you a few more choice swears under his breath, but he finally complies in writing a check with the correct amount. If you had been anyone else, perhaps Nishida could have paid you the 230,000 yen without issue. Perhaps you’d have even considered that a steal. Your training under Kishibe and Himeno taught you more about pricing devils than you were prepared to admit.
What are the ethics to killing devils when you are dating one?
You decide to follow the devil code of ethics. Kill or be killed, it’s that simple.
It’s never been a question if Nayuta would spurn you for such acts if she were to ever learn of them. It’s the fact you know Nayuta would follow you to Sendai in a heartbeat.
“I found the C-”
You will never bring those unfinished words to reality.
Carefully you remove the gloves on your hands to even more carefully extract your wallet from the ziplock bag you keep it in, placing your check within its pockets. Then you tuck it all away once more before donning a clean pair of gloves instead.
“Ugh, I’m getting hot just looking at you,” Nishida groans, eying you as if you were equal parts insane and excessive. You wonder if he’ll ever get used to the lengths you go to make sure no trace of blood and the smells of other devils touch your person. You don’t even put your axe in the car, it hasn’t been there since it had been a new purchase. No, you keep the rusting thing right here in Nishida’s crappy building in Sendai’s slums.
Trying to hide something from Nayuta’s nose is like trying to rob a bank blindfolded. “I told you already, I don’t want the blood getting on me. Killing devils is gross,” you wave the man off. Five months you’ve been doing this and you haven’t slipped up yet. Your ritual is the same each time ー before you start hunting, you dress in what is practically a glorified hazmat suit. Once work is done, you take it all off with gloves covering your hands and dump it in the trash.”
“It just seems like a lot of hassle,” Nishida scratches the back of his head, nonplussed. “If this ever gets in the way of your job, don’t come crying to me.”
“This coming from the man who doesn’t do the hunting himself is crazy,” you click your tongue in unsurprised annoyance. If it means keeping your proclivities a secret from the house, you’ll wear the hazmats again and again. “I’m not coming in tomorrow, I have a date with my girlfriend. Something you know nothing about. Well, you did. Until about a month ago, right?”
The look on Nishida’s face almost makes you feel better about his attempt to scam you. Almost. “Just go home before I decide to take my offers of employment elsewhere!”
You chortle with pleasure as you finally exit his dusty office.
When you arrive home, the wind must have blown your scent through the door or a cracked window because you walk into Makima’s arms the moment you pass through the door. “Welcome home, [First],” Makima greets you adoringly, red tresses brushing against your jaw. Her arms are as warm as her voice, wrapped around you as loose as one called the Control Devil will allow.
It’s instinctive, how quickly you return the embrace. “That professor finally off your ass?” Strange. Since when has Makima been a student?
Nayuta pulls away from you slightly, just enough to look you in the eye as you converse. Nayuta is the student, you remember. Business management is what she studies. “I don’t know why he-” Nayuta blinks as she takes all of your visuals in. “[First], what’s wrong?”
Your smile falters, “it’s nothing, I’m just tired.” Tired of the memories that don’t belong to you. “Management just really loves working their best employee.” You’re happy tonight is Himeno and Ichika’s pub night where they never drink alcohol but do engage in the card games with the locals. Himeno’s been trying to catch in the midst of a lie you’re sure no one can detect.
“Want me to talk to them then?” Nayuta is too quick to offer her services. I’m earning more than enough now. “I’ll get you a manager’s salary too.”
“Nah,” you shake your head. “I just want it to be tomorrow for our date already.” You’ll be dying silk scarves in town and then you’ll head to a restaurant. If it weren’t for the restrictive life forced upon you by the world you live in, maybe the two of you would live somewhere more exciting. Somewhere with more than enough novelties for you to gawk at in awe.
Nayuta snorts at your dramatic lament, “you’re so cheesy.”
“You’re the cheesy one,” you blow a raspberry against the juncture between her jaw and neck and Nayuta squeals immediately.
“Gahahaha!” Nayuta ducks away and you giggle in return. She’s always been a bit ticklish, you’re simply the one lucky enough to do so without repercussions.
“I know ways to make tomorrow come much faster,” Power’s snark cuts through your flirting like a dull knife. The Blood Fiend rarely ever sits still unless it is mealtime or she is watching something thrilling enough. The evening news normally is usually not something that makes Power lay down in the middle of the living room floor on a throw pillow yet here she is. "Being stricken with blunt force guarantees many hours to pass you unknowingly.'
You raise an eyebrow at Power’s unwarranted attitude, “what’s got you in such a shitty mood?”
“They mentioned the Chainsaw Devil on the news earlier,” Nayuta recounts as if telling you the weather report. She looks over her shoulder at where Power lays coolly. “It’s the anniversary of when the Bomb and Chainsaw Devils showed up in Tokyo.” Right, I forgot. They only showed up once however many years ago and still the news would cover it like it could happen again at any moment. You secretly believe Hayakawa Power hopes for the same. You never met Hayakawa Denji, you only heard the stories. He sounded like an even bigger handful than Power.
Power is all that remains from everyone who once claimed the Hayakawa name as their own.
“Don’t mention that name in front of me!” Power snarls without looking in your direction. She doesn’t move to change the channel regardless.
“Pitiful,” Nayuta comments but her grip around you tightens in spite of it as she rests her ear against your chest.
Pitiful.
You open one too many bags of popcorn while Nayuta puts on one of the Inazuma Eleven DVDs Power got on her birthday last year. The five dogs excitedly run around the house to the sound of Power obnoxiously singing "Stand up! Stand up! We love football!" Tora is content to rest on your lap and Meowy the Second takes off with her second popcorn kernel.
To wait this long for someone who ran away and never looked back is pitiful.
A Power who isn’t living up to her proudly chosen name is even more so.
You breathe in the scent of Nayuta’s shampoo as she rests her head on your shoulder. It really is too damn pitiful.
“You ever wonder why there are devils but no angels?”
One of Nayuta’s classmates’ words piqued your interest from the other side of the room. Nayuta’s eyes followed yours in vague interest at the students piled in the corner. The only one you personally recognized was Yamada Moe, your class’ president. True to your word, you were on a date for lunch.
As much of a date it could be at school, anyway.
Everyday the lunch hour reared its delicious head, you’d make your way to Nayuta’s class to eat with her. “I mean, think about it. If devils are physical manifestations of the things we fear, why are there no physical manifestations of the things we love? Like, there are plenty of people who love snakes. So why’s there no Snake Angel?”
“A Chicken Angel would be pretty damn powerful then,” a different girl, likely the class clown, chirped. “But would angels be biblically accurate?” Her eyebrows move mischievously at her suggestions.
“Don’t say that,” Moe covered her mouth with her hand as she giggled. Her deep dark brown hair, the color of charred wood, is pulled back into a ponytail and her green eyes sparkled at the thought. “I’d love to see a Hamster Angel then.”
“Or even a Mermaid Angel! That would be so pretty!”
“Mermaids aren’t real, Rika.”
“Neither are zombies but there’s still a Zombie Devil,” ‘Rika’ sputtered in her defense, cheeks pink. “Everyone’s afraid of zombies and everyone loves mermaids, so both would exist by that logic!”
You considered their words with a silent hum. Himeno said she met an Angel Devil once, I think. I wonder how strong he is.
“ー and Makima had promised me to protect him if anything ever came out about him but, well,” Himeno trailed off before vaguely gesturing towards you. You remembered the discomfort of it even as the woman brushed it off with a warm palm placed on your head. “It’s fine though. Kishibe’s given me no updates concerning him and in our business, that’s a good thing. That twerp is doing just fine.”
If an Angel Devil is the manifestation of humanity’s fear of angels, you wondered what a Devil Angel would be like.
“Rika, Tomoko,” Nayuta placed her chopsticks atop her empty lunch box before resting her cheek on her hand. “Give me your desserts,” she yawned. Beneath the table, her legs twined with yours.
“Sure thing, Nayuta,” Rika beamed, holding up a pudding cup enthusiastically.
Tomoko nodded, looking relieved, “my mom packed me too many things anyway.”
Moe glowered in your direction.
It was almost reminiscent of the times you were both street urchins and Nayuta used her powers to ensure you’d be able to eat that day. The only difference is, as Tomoko and Rika walk the moderate distance to your half of the room, that you no longer are that desperate to eat. Nayuta smiled when she saw, among their treats, was an anpan roll with roasted black sesame seeds. Sweets were the secret to this young girl’s heart, all hints of disinterest washed away. Cute. “It’s one of your favorites, [First],” enthusiastically she opened the packaging before raising it to your lips. “Does it taste good?”
You relished the mixture of bread, sesame and adzuki beans on your tongue, “yeah, this is pretty nice.” You looked over at the unsuspecting girls who are too happy to help. Too happy and unaware of the reality of the situation. “Thanks.”
“It’s no problem,” Rika brushed off your gratitude with a dispassionate wave of her hand. “What kind of angels would you guys be excited to see? Mermaid Angels would be pretty cool, right?”
You shrugged, not wanting to reveal your inherent bias, “I can’t really imagine what an angel would be like. We’ve never seen one.”
“I just think if we had angels, they would be the ones fighting devils,” Tomoko sighed wistfully, light years away from where you were gathered in class 3-C. “Love is the strongest thing in the world, right?”
“The power of love is cheesy,” Nayuta scoffed.
The three of you ー Tomoko, Rika and yourself ー shared a look of varying degrees of disbelief.
“Since you find it so cheesy, maybe you can finally stop blocking the halls when you makeout and cuddle in the hallway,” Moe rolled her eyes from where she still sat, nose scrunched in equal measures of disgust. Her eyes held your own with a look of annoyance and you couldn’t hold back a snort.
“We are pretty annoying, huh,” you snickered, winking at how Nayuta was still holding the pastry near your lips. Laughter of agreement followed your admission from those sprinkled across the room save for two individuals. If Nayuta had been someone else, perhaps she would have withered under the scathing eyes of class 3-A’s president. Because she wasn't someone else, though, she met the glare with her own. “Even the Love Devil would hate us,” you bit into the roll once again, stealing Nayuta’s attention.
“The Love Devil is probably ugly anyway,” Nayuta replied with a petulant smirk.
Lunch continued without further hiccups, much to your relief. The desserts were eaten and the desks were back in place and it was time for you to head back to class. Nayuta still wasn’t entirely pleased at your class assignments, but she got better about it the following months. The ‘dates’ and walks had kept her placated.
“Thanks for that, [First],” Himeno sighed gratefully when Nayuta was in the bath after your celebratory dinner. “When are kids supposed to stop having temper tantrums? We really don’t need her having one at school. You have to be her anchor.”
You’d have done that even if Himeno didn’t want it. “I’ll pick you up after class,” you told Nayuta unnecessarily but you knew she liked the reassurance. You’d always come back for her even if there was distance standing in the way of that.
“You can make out with Nagano later,” Moe scoffed as she walked past you to room 3-A.
Nayuta glared over your shoulder at the brunette, “she’s ugly.”
“I do gotta get to class though,” you sighed heavily, throwing an arm over Nayuta's shoulder. She returned the gesture with both arms thrown around you. “My adoring fans in 3-A await me.”
“You don’t need your adoring fans when you have me,” Nayuta hugged you tighter and you don’t find yourself disagreeing.
You tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear, “that’s pretty true. Those guys mean nothing. You’re my number one.” Gold eyes looked at you like you were a dream before you had to turn around.
“Why do you even like her?” Moe scoffed as you caught up lazily. “She’s awful.”
“She’s cute,” your lips curled at the waves of irritation directed at you further.
Moe’s expression contorted into one of disgust at your answer, storming ahead of you. “People like you disgust me. You’re bullies.” We still sit next to each other so you’re not really doing anything, you know. Knowing it would be pointless telling the girl that, you looked over your shoulder to wave at Nayuta one last time before ducking into class.
“At least pretend to pay attention,” a quiet whisper from your right caught your attention. You shrugged, unbothered. You’ve withstood more terrifying things. Whatever you failed to do, that only seemed to upset the class president even further. “Follow along with the text before the teacher calls on you.”
“I forgot my textbook,” you whispered back, directing your eyes forward.
“You didn’t think to ask someone to look at theirs?” Moe asked incredulously.
You thumbed in the direction of the empty desk to your left. Kinomiya wasn’t there to mooch off of that day. “And it isn’t like you like me, or anything. I’ll just get the notes from someone else.”
“Unlike you, I’m a good person,” Moe muttered, raising her desk just enough that it wouldn’t make a sound as she pressed it against yours. “I’d have shared if you asked.”
“There are no good or bad people, just good or bad actions,” you countered her belief with one of your own. There aren’t even any devils that are purely bad. They only become bad to you because they killed someone you care about. Or because they destroyed something you considered precious. But if there was a devil that killed other devils and rescued people, you’d say they were good.
This philosophy could be applied even to angels.
Angels would only be considered good if they did help humanity fight against devils. If there were angels in an unseen place known as Heaven, they definitely didn’t feel called to fight against the apparent wicked. They didn’t feel called to defend the apparent helpless humans of Earth. And by that definition, that would make them bad creatures. Angels would be bad to you. “And if you have to say you’re a good person, you’re probably not as good as you think you are.” Moe gasped, brow furrowed in her offense as you leaned closer to read the page. “Thanks.”
She couldn’t have made it more apparent how much she hated you with how quickly she separated her desk from yours at the end of the day. You shrugged, not particularly bothered by the reaction.
Some people never meshed with each other and that was that.
Moe hated you and you were indifferent to her existence.
You initially believed Nayuta’s thoughts were the same as yours until she started wiping your arm as if it were filthy after school.
“You stink,” Nayuta’s nose scrunched in obvious displeasure, rubbing your arm as if she could scrub the smell of Yamada Moe away. Even now you were in awe of how strong her sense of smell was; Moe hadn’t even been wearing perfume. “Why do you smell like her?” If she meant to be intimidating in her glare, she failed before she could even try. Her furrowed brow was more cute than nerve racking.
“I forgot my textbook so we had to share,” you recalled the glares and looks of dismay. “She was not happy about it. I think Bags was lying on it so I didn’t see it when we were leaving.” You’d simply remember to check your book bag more thoroughly tomorrow morning. When you were a sizable distance from campus, you recalled the earlier discussion from lunch. “What did you think about all that angel talk at lunch today?”
“That humans are dumb,” as if realizing how that sounded, Nayuta pressed against you as you walked down the path apologetically. “99% of them.”
“You can say it, a lot of humans are dumb,” hands still woven together, you side step away just long enough to playfully tug Nayuta against. Power’s characteristic ‘gahahaha’s slip from Nayuta’s lips again, you aren’t sure when she started unconsciously mimicking her. It’s cute though. “Angels are just angels, even if they did exist. And it wouldn’t be like there’s a guarantee they’d want to just help humans either.”
“That’s because humans are arrogant,” Nayuta didn’t hold back her criticism with her concerns of offending you assuaged. “And they want to control the nature of everything. Fish swim, plants photosynthesize. Hurting is fine for devils.”
You chuckled at her choice of words, “I’d be the Pride Devil.” You took ownership of the inherent arrogance you possessed as a human of this good year.
“You’d be the [First] Devil,” Nayuta argued head tossed back joyously at the thought, giggling all the while.
“I don’t think enough people hate me for that to happen,” you chortled as you swung your hands back and forth. “Class Prez might, though. Maybe I should watch out. What if a [First] Devil does show up, am I gonna be replaced?”
Nayuta snorted affectionately, gold eyes bright like the sun, “you’re so dumb.”
A peaceful silence fell over you both and you released a satisfied breath. You wanted moments like this to last forever. “One day,” you looked at the orange-red sky above. “I’m gonna get old. At least, if I don’t die before then. But whatever ends up happening, we’re gonna be different,” you promised before Nayuta could protest what you’d begun to announce. “We’re not like them.”
ー and Makima’s time was too short; you’d heard that enough times since living with the Naganos.
That wasn’t going to be you and Nayuta.
“We’re not gonna be like them,” you promised, squeezing her hand tightly. “We’re gonna live forever.”
ー
When was it when the image of Makima began to haunt you like a ghost?
You remember now, it had been in October of your first and last year of middle school when Nayuta finally started braiding her hair. You’d been fine that morning up until she came to the kitchen and you dropped the jar of pickled radishes, quietly sobbing until you caught a fever.
“Do you hate my hair being like this?” Nayuta asked in the quiet of the room you shared. It’s large and spacious, fit for three people. You never understood why the third bed in the room was kept when Nayuta never slept in any bed that wasn’t your own. The dogs and cats got a kick out of it, at the very least. So did Power who was shuffling about in the kitchen, banging pots and pans.
“I think it’s pretty. You’re pretty no matter how you do your hair.”
“I found a picture of the old me in Himeno’s room. The old us. She had her hair like this in all of Himeno’s memories too.”
“You used your powers on Himeno?”
“When she took a nap the other day. I wanted,” Nayuta trailed off, arms wrapped around her knees and eyes downcast. You were too hot to cuddle but she sat on the floor by your side anyway. “I wanted to know what the old me was like. Himeno didn’t like her very much. She liked the old you better. She liked that Aki person more though.”
Power’s Aki, you recalled from the photos  in a photo album Ichika made for Power’s birthday. “Himeno likes you though. I told you before, we’re not ー and Makima. It doesn’t matter if she didn’t like her.” Maybe Himeno had a thing against redheads.
“She thinks it sometimes. I can tell.”
I know.
“The old man said I was selfish when he met us.”
“I like that you’re selfish. We both get to be selfish at this point. Do you know how long we were in that dump?” You shared a laugh at the memory of the dump in question. The mattress was old as sin, rock hard and the blankets you owned couldn’t keep crickets out let alone the cold. “I miss robbing that one guy with the dolphin apron. He made the best dumplings. Wish we could have found the secret formula so we could still make them.”
“Humans can be dumb but the food is really good,” Nayuta’s lips turned upright.
You shift a bit so you can lay on your side, facing her more clearly, “do you remember what it was like in Hell?”
Nayuta shook her head, braid dancing to the motion. “Only little bits and pieces, but it’s blurry,” she disclosed, words soft. “I only remember wanting to leave soon.”
“When I was a kid, I always thought I was missing something,” you hold out your hand and Nayuta’s fingers slip into your own. You never knew another hand could be this warm, not even when your parents were alive. You don’t think you’d truly been warm until you met the girl who changed everything. You wanted to hold onto this life; hold it for as long as you could. You disavowed that there’d be a day you’d stop being you and Nayuta stopped being Nayuta and the new versions of you would run into the dawn hand in hand. You and Nayuta would live forever. “I’m really happy that I found you.”
Any sentimentality in the room was immediately blown away by the sound of Power kicking open the door.
“We have a doorknob, Power,” you groaned. Then you caught a whiff of the smell of broth, chicken and vegetables and raised yourself into a sitting position. Taking note of your realization, the strawberry-haired fiend puffed out her chest proudly as she presented the tray to you. The bowl was filled to the brim with soup, sloshing over the lip as she stepped forward and the crackers were worse for wear because of it. “You cooked?”
“Homemade! Straight from the can!” Power placed the tray on your lap, hands resting on her hips. “You humans are fragile creatures, so I decided to grant you my assistance.”
You had to purse your lips together to prevent yourself from laughing. “You know what, thanks, Power,” you let the fiend have her moment. Her homemade straight-from-the-can soup smelled pretty damn good.
“Ichika, are you dating anyone?”
“What brought that on so suddenly?”
You shrug from where you sit at the kitchen table. “Because you never go anywhere unless it’s the farmer’s market,” you point out deftly. Work and home, that’s all either Nagano sister seems to have time for, save for the occasional pub night. No one in this house has much of a social life when you ponder it for more than two seconds. “We were kids before but it’s not like you don’t have a life now.”
“You’re all still kids to me,” Ichika’s laugh is light and playful, like she’s daring you to protest otherwise.
“Power might be,” you lean back in your chair with a quiet snort. “She’s always been a handful.”
It’s rare for the house to be this quiet between the dogs and Power. The former are on a walk with Nayuta and the latter tagged along with Himeno to the market. Power has a child-like nature you doubt will ever fade. If something happens to Ichika and Himeno, what’s going to happen to Power?
“I recall all three of you being handfuls,” Ichika continues washing away at a plate with a laugh. “I’m not sure how you remember it but you and Nayuta had your moments too.” You remember your last first day of middle school and how Nayuta turned Power into a dog. You can recall many instances of Power falling prey to Nayuta’s power, truthfully. Himeno hated it. “Well, you had the least amount of tantrums, so I suppose I can give you that.”
You snort, lips curling in amusement, “name one tantrum I had.”
“I distinctly recall the time you were upset Himeno ate your leftovers.”
“That was different,” you cross your arms resolutely. “I counted everything I had left and put the numbers on the box!” If Power has a child-like nature, Himeno is a permanent child at heart. “I told her if she wanted something, to let me know. But she didn’t! She just wanted to mooch off my plate!” How many times has she put me through this? She hasn’t changed since I quit working at the Bureau.
“Himeno, I’m getting something to eat. What do you want?”
“It’s okay, I’m not hungry.”
“Himeno,” you eyed the woman with your lips pressed together and eyes narrowed. “I’m getting something to eat. What. Do you want?”
“Nothing, ー, geez! I’m not even hungry!”
“Liar, because I know damn well the moment I get back you’re going to want whatever I’m having! You know what, at this point, get your ass up. We’re leaving.”
“Wow,” Himeno held a hand against her chest, mockingly crushed. “This is how little you trust your best friend? I thought we had something special.”
“I trust you as much as I trust Nanaka not to poison me the first chance she gets,” you’d only been working for Japan’s Public Safety Devil Hunters for a month and the brunette still hated you. Apparently the transgressions of being assigned the partner of her beloved Makima was too heavy a crime. “I think I saw a new Italian place open up by the convenience store ran by that Brazilian couple I told you about.”
“Are you alright, dear?” You rub your forehead as if the motion will chase away ー’s memories with a vengeance.
“Yeah, I’m fine.” I never worked at the Bureau, you remind yourself. And I don’t want to. I’m no hero. That was ー’s desire. You only desire that which is most simple. “But you never answered my question. We’re not kids anymore.”
Ichika sets aside her wet rubber gloves on the drying rack, wiping the remnants of moisture onto her apron. “You don’t have to worry about me, [First]. I’ve never been the social butterfly, my sister’s always been the brave one.” You wonder what memories Ichika recalls as she takes a seat in her usual spot across the table. “That’s why she became a devil hunter. But even when we were in school, she got along with everybody.”
“You said you were in the tea ceremony club, right?”
She perks up in pleasant surprise, “that’s right! I’m surprised you remember!” The summer before you started high school, Ichika pulled out their old yearbooks from when they were students. “It feels like just yesterday both of you were in high school.”
“It basically was just yesterday.” It hadn’t been long at all since graduation and your classmates flocked out of Shonai to various major cities across the country. Everyone but the two of you. “High school was… better than middle school.”
“That it was,” you know from the slight frown on Ichika’s face she is remembering exactly how much of a mess your time at Higashi Middle School had been. So much so you transferred to Kitahoro Middle halfway through attendance. “It was hard for the two of you.”
“[Last]?” A voice that twinkles like a bell calls for you. “[Full name] is that you?”
It’s a little past lunch that Saturday afternoon and the day is sleepy for both humans and devils. You hadn’t seen so much as even a trace of devil activity, deciding to have an early lunch after tossing your weapon of choice underneath a dumpster in a back alley.
You turn around at the sound of your name, fearful it is Himeno who has found you.
Thankfully, this person is Himeno’s opposite in every way.
Their eyes are green instead of blue and their hair is a dark brown instead of navy.
I know this person.
“Oh, Class Prez,” you blink in realization. Yamada Moe, in the flesh. “It’s been a while.”
On a school day like any other it announced that Kiritani Tomoko had been killed by a devil. Rare as that was in a small town like Shonai, everyone had been shaken up.
“How ironic,” you heard the whispers from the adults around you. “It was the Rooster Devil. How ironic when her family raises chickens. Even here in Shonai, devils are everywhere.”
Adults who in the same breath greet Power and Nayuta with warmth whenever they are seen walking down the street.
Hypocrites.
Tomoko’s death is unfortunate but you won’t pretend it was something that impacted you personally. To the president of 3-A, Yamada Moe, it was an unforgivable blow. You didn’t see her during lunch in 3-C, nor did she come back from lunch despite leaving her bookbag and pen on her desk.
“Rika’s not here, either,” Nayuta told you when you pointed out the empty desk.
You aren’t saddened by the death of Kiritani Tomoko but you know of a death you couldn’t recover from.
So you don’t fight it when your teacher tells you to find where Moe has slipped away to and you don’t drag her back from the ponytail when you find her crying on the rooftop either. “Hey,” you closed the door behind you.
“Just go away,” Moe shuddered, holding herself tighter. “Why are you even here?”
“Hori-sensei wanted me to come find you.”
Moe raises her head with hot anger, eyes red and weary, “like you suddenly care about being a good student.”
“I told you before, didn’t I?” You plopped on the ground in spite of Moe’s protests, hands resting on your lap. The autumn wind is comforting against your skin and the rolling clouds are fluffy. An unsuspecting day to learn someone from school died. “I don’t believe in good or bad people. People just do good or bad things. But I get it,” you shrugged lackadaisically. “Nayuta does a lot of bad things. It isn’t like I’m a saint either, we’ve done plenty of bad. If that makes us bad people to you, that’s fine. But I get what it’s like to lose people too.
“My parents were good ones. But some asshole hit them with their car when I was seven and I was stuck on my own until I was thirteen,” what would have happened to you next if you had left things to the authorities around you? You’re unsure. At seven years old, running away seemed like the best option at the time. No princes would be coming to save you so you became your own prince. “Devils. Cops. Figuring out what to eat. The other people out on the streets could be the worst too. I got into a lot of fights back then.” All to lie in a building the government had yet to demolish. “I thought the world ended. Or at least my place in it had. If I never met Nayuta, I’m not sure how much longer I could have kept going like that.”
Spotting movement to your left, you looked to Moe and your eyes caught one another.
Red as her eyes were, they were wide at your confession with her mouth slightly ajar. “It’s corny but when she’s here, I feel like I can do anything.” Survive on the streets for months or even fight devil hunters that were planning to kill you before you could blink. “So she gets to do awful things. Nayuta can do the most awful things in the world. She’s perfect.” She’d been perfect the moment you met her. “So I can’t say much about being sad about Tomoko, because I didn’t know her like that. But I know how it feels to lose someone and I know what it’s like to be terrified it’ll happen again. So for what it’s worth, I’m sorry about your friend.”
“Sorry,” Moe murmured. "Thank you."
“You don’t have anything to apologize for, you’re the one upset.”
...
“Aren’t you supposed to make me go back to class?”
“I’ll just tell Teach I got lost or something,” you yawned. “It’s none of his business.”
“You’re actually a good person, aren’t you?” Moe sniffled, resting her forehead against her knees. “You just pretend to be mean.”
“Good people don’t exist,” you sang, watching the clouds roll by. “Now mean, that I can be.”
“Now you’re being stubborn,” Moe muttered under her breath, sniffing again. “You’re good. It’s just being with Nagano Nayuta makes you act like a jerk.”
“It’s fine, you don’t have to like her,” you close your eyes with a light smile. “The less people realizing all her positive sides, the more Nayuta there is for me.”
“I don’t know how you stomach being around her,” you shrugged. “She’s like poison. The two of you together doesn’t feel right. She doesn’t feel right.
You open one eye, “what do you mean?”
“It’s just a feeling I get,” Moe explained vaguely, twisting her hands together anxiously.
.
“Nayuta, don’t use your powers at school for a while.”
“Why not?”
“I found the C-” “Yamada thinks there’s something off about you and everyone else is still on edge about that last devil attack. So it’ll be better to lay low until everything calms down.”
“Who’s that?”
“My class’ president. You know her, you think she’s ugly.”
“... Do you like her?”
“She’s alright, I guess. She’s just a classmate.”
“What about me?”
“You’re everything.”
Nayuta leapt onto your back in her satisfaction, legs wrapped tightly around your waist. “I’ll leave the humans at school alone then.”
“Don’t use them no matter what, alright? We can just get extra snacks on the way home from school or something.”
“I won’t.”
“You cut your hair, it looks good!”
“Thanks,” Moe plays with a lock of curly hair, boyishly short. It suits her rather nicely. You look freer. “It’s surprising seeing you here. What are you…?” She glances quickly at the hazmat-style onesie you’ve dressed yourself in, plastic visor raised above your head.
“Got a janitorial job and I’m taking no chances,” you lean against the cold bench lazily. “I never mocked a janitor before but I damn sure am never going to now. Those guys are the unsung heroes of our society.”
“Janitori-” Moe snorts in her shock, looking like you’ve grown two heads. “I always figured you’d become a philosophy teacher considering how you were back in middle school”
“Nayuta’s signed up for classes but I’m taking a couple years off to save,” what you plan on majoring in when the time comes is unknown even to you. Perhaps Moe is onto something with philosophy. “We can’t mooch off our benefactors forever.” What’s going to happen to Power if anything happens to Himeno and Ichika, you find yourself pondering once again. A third passport shouldn’t be that hard to forge. Kishibe got me and Nayuta into the country without any problem, didn’t he?
“Oh, where is she going?”
“She’s at Tohoku too,” you nod at the Tohoku University tote bag resting on Moe's hip. “She’s doing everything virtually. Business Management major.”
There’s little surprise on Moe’s part when she hears that, “Business Management sounds like something that suits her.”
“She is pretty bossy, I can give you that,” you huff with an airy sigh. Management is something Nayuta will definitely thrive in. “She’s a damn good student though. What about you? What have you been up to? Majoring in law?”
“Philosophy, actually!” She laughs at how your eyebrows raise. “Surprising?”
“A little,” you nod and Moe rolls her eyes in playful exasperation. “But with all the arguments we had, philosophy or law honestly made the most sense. So I wasn’t that far off.”
“Those weren’t arguments, those were debates,” Moe corrects you needlessly, arms behind her back. It’s almost like all the tension left her when she cut her hair.
“You’ve mellowed out, Prez,” you whistle, impressed.
A younger Moe would have asked what you meant with a furrowed brow. The Moe of the present day accepts your words with a hearty laugh. “I was a bit high strung back then,” she lets out a nostalgic sigh. “Maybe more than a bit,” she admits sheepishly. “But middle school really feels so long ago. I guess I changed without noticing.”
“Sorry about middle school,” your lips curl into a grimace. “The stuff with Nayuta I mean.”
Moe’s eyebrows knit together with an empathetic curl of her lips, “it’s okay, I get it now. You were under a lot of stress back then.”
“How’s Rika doing?” You vaguely remember that girl who Nayuta would pawn snacks off of. “She going to Tohoku too?”
“Oh,” Moe shuffles nervously.
“What, did she drop out or something?”
“No, um, she never went to university,” Moe fiddles with a bracelet on her left wrist.
You raise an eyebrow at the odd behavior, “is she… dead?”
“No!” Moe answers quickly and you cock your head to the side, shrugging your shoulders. Okay then what is she then? “It’s just that she… became a devil hunter after we graduated.”
“Okay,” Good luck then, Rika. If you’re in Tokyo maybe Kishibe’ll be the one in charge of your training. As much as you hate the man, everything he’s taught you has kept you alive so far. You see green staring at you. “What?”
“I’m just surprised that you took that so well,” Moe breathes in disbelief. “Considering everything with Nayuta, I was afraid to bring devil hunters up in front of you.”
Your blood runs cold. “What do you mean ‘considering everything with Nayuta’?”
“Did-” Moe blinks once before she covers her mouth in horror. “Did you not know? I’m- I’m so sorry-”
“I found the C-”
.
“How did you know Nayuta wasn’t human? When did you figure it out?”
“When… that time back in middle school. She didn’t look human to me and when you went to her I just thought… in that moment Nayuta being a devil is why you were always so protective of her,” Moe’s head looks around the alley you’ve brought her too cautiously. It’s deep, deep within the darkest crevices of Sendai. “Where are we? Why are we here?”
You look at Moe and then the dumpster beside you, “I have to tell you the truth about something.” Your thumb brushes against your middle and index fingers for a moment. “I’m not really a janitor. I’ve been killing devils for the past seven months now. It’s underground work though.” You tell Moe this news as one might tell their friend they decided to plant tulips in their garden, reaching for where you slid your axe underneath the grimy trash heap.
“Devils?”
“Yeah.”
Moe looks at your rusty blade, caked in the blood from those you’ve killed thus far. “... But Nayuta,” she is unable to bring herself to say the rest.
You laugh, leaning against the wall for half a second before deciding you can’t stand the feel of it against your back. Nor do you wish to feel the eyes of Moe upon you. “Yeah, it’s sick isn’t it? She’s a devil but I’ve been out here for the past seven months killing ‘em. But Nayuta,” black hair and red rings fill your memories. “she means everything to me; I was alone for years until I met her. I have never cared that she was a devil. She was perfect, she’s still perfect. If anything ever happened to her, it would feel like the entire world was ending. I used to be a cashier, you know, but try making enough money to sneak a devil out of the country at your local 7-11,” you laugh humorously. “And I know you’ve never liked Nayuta but for me, Nayuta is everything. So please… please don’t tell anyone.”
“I won’t, [First]!” A foot steps towards you, voice full of emotion. “I didn’t like Nayuta before but I get it now! There are good devils out there and I’m going to prove it. That’s why I’m studying philosophy! If humans and devils can understand each other, we wouldn’t have to kill each other anymore!”
“She means everything to me,” your fingers dig into your palms as you repeat yourself weakly. She’s the best thing you knew you needed in a world that had nearly beaten you down for good. The one you would find repeatedly no matter the time and distance that separated you. “What am I doing? Killing devils for money like this when I know…” your shoulders sag. “But I can’t do anything else for her. I can’t earn money fast enough otherwise and I don’t have time to wait. I’m sure… this makes me a bad person, doesn’t it?”
“You are not a bad person,” Moe’s hand is warm on your back even through the layers you wear to keep yourself from being bloodied. “It’s not you that’s wrong, it’s the world itself. If enough people just realized that, things would be better.” A world where humanity and devils lived together in harmony? It seems like an impossible dream; perhaps it is one not within reach. Not within the lifetime you currently possess. And that’s okay, I’ll make my own happiness even with that fact. “You’re just trying to do what you can for the one you love in a shitty situation. Nayuta would understand that. So… so don’t beat yourself up about this. I never told anyone about Nayuta and I’m never going to.”
There was nothing familiar about her black hair, nor the mole under her left eye. You were sure you couldn’t say you’d ever met anyone with golden eyes with red rings in them either. There was no reason to feel like your senses had been set ablaze and the universe shifted.
You didn’t know this girl.
This girl was a stranger.
You knew this and yet you still fell to your knees as warm tears flooded your eyes without your permission.
You breathe.
“By the way,” you yawned, as it dawned on you that you never once asked for your new companion’s name. “what’s your name?”
When there was no immediate response, you thought the girl fell asleep. “Nayuta,” you finally heard the feathery light reply. Nayuta pressed herself closely to your chest, listening to your heartbeat.
“I’m [First],” you squeezed.
Nayuta squeezed back.
You breathe.
“I didn’t, [First], please believe me! Don’t leave me!”
You slide down your visor.
“We can get married for real when we grow up,” you vowed once more as you clumsily led each other in your dance.
Nayuta’s smile was saccharin, “promise?”
“Promise.”
And you breathe.
“Hey, Nayuta, pick a country. One that doesn’t have a devil hunting association in it.”
“Seychelles,” Nayuta didn’t miss a beat, grinning the devilish grin you loved all the while. “We still need to have our honeymoon.”
The back of your fist strikes Moe’s throat before she has time to react.
“Don’t worry at all, Prez,” you kick the woman to the ground, grip on your axe tightening as you sit atop her. “I know you won’t tell anyone.” You wonder what those forest green eyes see when they look up at you, eyes wide as she gasps for air. You hold her jaw in place, gloved fingers digging into her skin.
“Stop-” her words come quiet, hoarse. “I won’t tell! I really won’t tell!”
She won’t say anything. No. She might. She hasn’t snitched in all these years. She could change her mind. Cut off her tongue. Her fingers too. And the toes. All of it needs to go.
“I could cut off your tongue,” you feel her breath hitch from she freezes under your touch. You feel the beat of a pulse, pounding like a drum. “but you could still use your fingers. I could cut your fingers and you could use your toes. I could cut off everything and you’d still probably find a way to get out a message with the stumps too.” Tears swell in Moe’s eyes and you barely feel her fists beating into your shoulder. I’m glad I hit her in the throat, you finally take note of her barely audible, ragged whispers. “You can say you won’t talk until you’re blue in the face but there is nothing that can stop you from ever changing your mind. I’m sorry. I really did like you.”
See? I became a bad person to you just now, didn’t I?
The weight of your axe is heavy as it follows the push of gravity guiding your hand into soft flesh below. There’s a quick breath, a gurgle, that slips from Moe’s lips and you raise your axe again.
Red droplets strike your visor and you raise your axe again.
Muscle and sinew decorate the dirty earth around you and you raise your axe again.
Again and again even when what you strike is hard rock instead of flesh until you raise your axe a final time, and you hear metal clink that isn’t your own.
Your neck cracks from the force you whip your neck and the devil flinches when your eyes meet, not daring to press its raised hand to the ground. When you look closely, you see a twisted green soda can wobbling underneath it. Your shoulders steadily heave from your fatigue, neither of you moving a centimeter. You can’t hold back a tired laugh from the absurdity, resting a hand on a knee as you push yourself up. “Sorry,” you titter, neither of you blinking as you step to the side. “You’re hungry, aren’t you,” you gesture to the body, still warm. “It’s okay. Eat it.”
The devil’s mouth trembles, eyes flittering between you and the still lumps on the ground. It takes a step back.
You blink, letting your hand hang loosely against your leg. “What are you waiting for? I said eat it.”
As if coming back to life, the devil on all fours takes one step forward - then another - until it rushes past you to begin its feast. You raise your visor when the devil turns its head, jowls soaked in blood, eyes narrow. It eats stiffly, eying you and the axe in your hand. You smile reassuringly, eyes soft.
The Rat Devil should be about ¥600,000 right?
Nayuta squeals when you lift her feet off the ground as you laugh maniacally, arms safely tucked underneath her back and legs.
An evening walk on the beach is just what you need after a trying day at work. The moon is full and the evening Shonai air is sweet unlike the stink of the city, heavy with exhaust and blood. Thanks for not being a bitch this time, Nishida. The Rat Devil cost as much as you estimated it would, if not a bit higher.
The life you lead isn’t perfect but it has its moments.
“We’re going to fall!” Nayuta shrieks but her grin is wide and shining under the moonlight. She’s almost like a siren, you think, as the waves accompany her voice. The sand squishes underneath your toes, kicking up the waves as you spin and spin. One day when you carry her like this, she’ll be in a beautiful dress and veil just like you talked about when you were kids.
“Relax,” you tilt your head back, tasting the ocean spray on your lips. “I’m never gonna drop you!”
“[First],” Himeno calls in a sing-song voice as you walk out the door. “Wait for me, kiddo! I need you to give me a ride!”
Your hand grips the car handle as you tilt your head back with a loud groan, “Himeno, I’m going to work.” The sun hasn’t risen yet nor have the morning birds begun singing their songs. Eight months you have been able to successfully stave off this conversation.
Eight months.
You hope to make it nine.
“Wow,” Himeno jeers, undeterred and you know your stomach will be heavy with dread if you’re unable to shake her off your tail. Eight months you’ve been able to successfully avoid this conversation with Himeno and you don’t plan to break your record. “Someone gets a job and the moment she starts moving up in the world she forgets about all the people she met along the way.”
“Yep,” you click your tongue. “I'm one of those people. So it looks like you’ll have to wait until someone else decides to be your chauffeur. I’ll call Sebastian to retrieve you later.”
“So they’re paying enough at 7-11’s for you to afford Sebastian’s rates?” Himeno whistles, impressed and awed as she rests a large stack of ¥10,000 on top of the car. “Can you recommend me a position? If I’d known that, I’d have left Himeji’s ages ago.”
Blue stares into [color].
Wordlessly, you sit in the car and Himeno follows suit, quiet as you pull out of the driveway and far from the coziness of home. She waits nearly ten minutes to the hour before she opens her lips, a smile in her voice that is frigid. “You have the look of a killer now,” your eyes flit to your reflection in the rearview mirror. “I wonder how many things you had to kill to get eyes like that.”
“What’s the issue with killing,” you mutter, eyes on the empty road. How she found the money is of little consequence. She has it and that’s all that matters. “Why did you make me learn how to kill them if you didn’t want me to do it?”
“Those skills were for protecting yourself,” you scoff at her answer. What’s self-defense to her will never accommodate your ambitions. “Not going out of your way to get yourself killed. As long as you’re living under my roof-”
“Oh don’t worry, we won’t be living there for much longer,” you cut off your benefactor.
“We?”
“We!” The car comes to an abrupt halt as your glares turn on one another. “You and Ichika aren’t going to be here protecting us forever! You think Power actually has the ability to live on her own in a world of humans? You’re not going to live forever!”
“And you think you are?!” Himeno laughs at the ludicrous presumption.
“I’m going to figure things out by then!”
Three adult passports.
(I’ll need the forgeries too.)
Visa.
Housing.
Food.
Permanent Residency.
(Can’t believe I forgot about ticket costs. Where do I go for illegally flying devils out of the country, huh? And the pets. What do I do to bring-)
“[First]-”
“And I don’t need your help to do that! And I don’t need to be under your roof either, I’ll move out! I have enough!”
“ー stop!”
“I’M NOT ー!” Himeno balks as you scream, slamming your hand against the driver’s window. The glass cracks but it does not shatter. “ ー isn’t coming back and the one you’re stuck with now is me! And I know you hate that and you have to be reminded that your best friend died every time you look at me but I am not her! I’m never going to be her!” Those memories would never be yours. Makima was never going to be yours. Makima is Makima, Nayuta is Nayuta. The difference is night and day. “I’m not like her! I hate her! I hate,” your voice cracks and you rest your head on the steering wheel, squeezing the handle tightly. “I hate it. I hate that you only want to see her. You never want to see me.”
“When Kishibe brought you both to me, I wanted to take you in immediately. And I have to be honest, a good portion of it was because of who you used to be. But I know you, [First],” a hand rests on your back, warm, but you’re too tired to brush it away. “You’re brave and kind and you look out for the people you care about even if it means you have to take the brunt force of everything. Nayuta has no idea about this and it’s because you want to keep her safe.”
“I don’t want her to come to the city and be discovered again,” “I’ve found the Control Devil.” The five words you fear hearing the most. “A life where Nayuta can be free. That’s all I want.”
“I see you, [First]. I see you and I see Nayuta and I’m very proud of who you’ve become and the people you’ll grow into for as long as I get to see it. I just haven’t been doing a good job showing that and for that, I’m so sorry,” her voice is cloyingly thick and in spite of yourself, your eyes feel hot. “Even if I could go back and stop ー from dying, I wouldn’t. I would never give up having you in my life, not even for her. You, Power, Nayuta. All three of you are precious to me, younger sisters I’ve always wanted.”
“You already had a younger sister, idiot,” you wipe your nose against your sleeve, disregarding your disgust for the trail of snot it leaves on the fabric. “Does Ichika mean nothing to you?”
“More younger sisters,” Himeno laughs wetly. “The four of you give me a life that’s worth living. I love it when Power plays her anime at the loudest volume possible. I can even look back on Nayuta and Power’s fights with a smile, isn’t that funny? At the time those situations weren’t funny but that’s how sisters are, I guess. And you always thought you could be slick hiding that you could be as much of a brat as the rest of us. Well, except for maybe Ichika. You should have seen her when she was four.”
You laugh despite yourself, “Ichika was probably the most well-behaved four year old on the planet. You probably made your parents want to send you back to the hospital.”
Himeno chortles, “only half the time.”
A pleasant silence falls over the vehicle.
“I think it’s time to call Grandpa Kishibe and finally move from this place. The house is getting too small,” Himeno leans back in her seat and stares at the leather ceiling. “The geezer should foot the bill for everything, he never even sent me child support.”
“Nayuta wants to go to Seychelles,” you follow Himeno's example, resting against your seat. It's dawn now, you note the fingers of the sun peeking behind the clouds and painting the sky hues of rose, indigo and vermillion.
You love the dawn.
“I know a place even better than that,” it’s supposed to be a wink but with the eyepatch, who can tell. “Remember that Angel Devil I told you about? The place he lives is pretty damn snazzy and warm all-year round. A place where even devils can live freely.”
You barely had time to dry your hands on your skirt when Rika burst through the bathroom door, chest heaving. “[First], come quick,” the girl’s eyes were wide with fear. “Moe and Nayuta got into a fight!”
You bolted through the door, shoving Rika to the side.
Class 3-C was a mess by the time you arrived and calling what likely happened was a disservice to what you were welcomed to. Desks were skewed to the side as if a tornado had blown through it, food strewn across the floor. No one noticed your presence, not when Moe sat on the floor holding her jaw, battered and nose dripping with blood and Nayuta’s short form towered over her with silent menace.
“Nayuta, stop,” you stand between the devil and the human foolish enough to invoke her wrath.
“Why?” Gold eyes glowed harshly.
“You’ll kill her.”
“Why do you care if she dies? You said she didn’t mean anything to you. So I don’t understand,” Nayuta appeared to stand perfectly still but you could hear the tremor in her voice. From rage or from wanting to cry, you didn’t know. “Why are you protecting this girl? I’m all you need. Aren’t I?” Taking a half-step forward, Nayuta gripped your arms as if they were her lifeline. “Aren’t I?”
One year ago, not long after you turned thirteen, a blazing star sought refuge in your chest.
The birth of the universe.
Within that birth, you willingly took a devil’s hand and ran across the playground of the divine welcoming all damnation.
You’d do it for as long as she wanted you.
“From now and forever, we are going to stay together. We’ll eat a lot together, sleep together and live a happy life together,” you hold Nayuta to your chest, closer than what is possible between devils and man. “More than anyone in the world, you’re the only person I need. And I’ll never want anyone else either,” you whispered, brushing your fingers against her silky hair. “I told you before, didn’t I? We’re not like them. You and me are gonna live forever.”
“You want to be with me?”
“I want to be with you.”
“You’ll stay with only me?”
“I’m always gonna stay with only you.”
“You promise?”
“I promise.”
“Let’s go home, okay?” When you felt the weak nod of your beloved, you wrapped Nayuta’s legs around your waist. Your initial steps were shaky, pacing backwards for a few seconds before you caught your balance.
“I love you, [First],” Nayuta’s arms trembled around your shoulders and you hear the telltale signs of hiccuping.
“I love you too,” you held her closer if it was possible.
Warm droplets fall against your neck.
Nayuta looks beautiful in her white dress, veil trailing delicately along the white sand.

one summer day
Tumblr media
11 star-crossed. where you celebrate tanabata with your friends
<< 10 epiphany. | >> 12 shoot for the stars.
pairing: ushijima wakatoshi x reader word count: 1.4k warnings: just fluff <3 tags: @lemurzsquad @daisy-room @integers @brokenscaredakira -- (inbox me if you want to be added to the tag list)
there are several thoughts that run through your mind as your eyes land on ushijima. one, he kept his promise to you, wearing a simpler yet formal kimono. two, it is utterly, and you mean utterly, unfair how devastatingly good he looks in it, it cannot be healthy for your heart. three, how are you going to survive the night at this rate? and four, you are going to be swarmed by his fans and you only have yourself to blame.
it is tanabata after all, the star festival that celebrates the ancient legend of orihime and hikoboshi, two star-crossed lovers who could only meet one day every year. almost every girl in high school is bound to attend the biggest tanabata festival in the miyagi area.
“feeling a little warm?” you manage to find your voice to tease the stoic boy. there is definitely a pink tint to his golden skin, one you credit to the summer heat.
next to him, semi and tendo jump into the fray as well, taking the rare opportunity to poke fun at their captain outside of volleyball practice, referencing inside jokes that you are not privy to.
“you both cleaned up well,” you chirp, nodding at their yukatas in acknowledgement.
“yeah, we didn’t want to leave ushijima-kun all dressed up by himself, and since we were part of the problem, we decided that we should shoulder some of the blame too,” tendo grins at you knowingly.
you give him a half-lidded look that said wow, you are so funny.
“c’mon, we’re late, i want to go check out some stalls before the fireworks go off.” you make a point to link your arm with semi, marching off with your best friend before anyone could get a word in and ignoring the source of the heat you are feeling on your face. definitely the summer heat.
the night air is warm, ever so slightly cooler than the day, but you could feel the sheen of sweat forming on your skin beneath the thin yukata fabric. it is crowded as expected, with streamers hanging from paper balls of every color, low enough that you run your hand through the soft wisps as you pass by.
the first stop of the evening is the center of the complex, where several man-made bamboo trees have been erected for festival-goers to write their wishes on a piece of paper and tie it to. you steer semi towards the tables with writing instruments and bands of color paper, tugging at his sleeve impatiently with ushijima and tendo following right behind him.
you grab a piece of paper and a pen, sidling off to one side so that your writing is not visible to your friends as you scrawl your wishes for the year on the thin material. once you are done, you sneak up to your friends stealthily, peeking over their shoulders to read what they have written.
“oi,” semi exclaims as he discovers you looking at his paper.
you look away innocently, standing to the side while waiting for them to be done. ushijima joins you, to which your heart stutters a beat to.
despite having patched things up months ago, things have not gone back to normal. gone were the days where your unrequited love is the absolute truth. now, ushijima’s every action, every look leaves you second-guessing yourself, and your heart feeling like you just ran a marathon.
you tried, you really did, to act as normal as you can around him without your heart on your sleeve. though you wonder whether you are doing a good job of it. there was no particular reason, but if you had to pick a turning point, it was that time when he got really close to you and you ended up kneeing him in the balls.
nothing was the same since then, at least for you.
so now, as he compliments you, your mind goes haywire. “you look beautiful in your yukata.”
you smooth over the folds, thumbing the gold detailing on the blue fabric, mind blanking out at his words. “thank you.” warmness spreads across your cheeks, causing you to look down and concentrate particularly hard at the little thread poking out the seam, picking at it, hoping he does not see the redness on you.
“wanna tie it together?” you nod at his question, following him to the bamboo tree. you end up picking a branch that you felt was more auspicious than the others, tying your paper strip to it.
ushijima decides on the same branch, knotting his paper just above yours. his purple touching your green one, as if it is a representation of his wishes. you shake your head at the thought. you did not dare to even explore that possibility, regardless of how different everything feels. but maybe, just maybe, if you are accepted to the university of tokyo, there is hope there.
“you had to pick the same branch, huh?”
he shrugs, holding out an arm for you. you take it naturally, despite the weird feeling in your stomach as you clutch onto his sleeve. “wanna get some food?”
you end up getting some yakitori skewers and a tornado potato from a roadside stall, easily demolishing the food in minutes before tugging him to a sweets stall. just as wakatoshi pays the vendor for the matcha mochi, two girls approach you both shyly, asking for a photo with him.
their eyes dart to you, probably wondering who you were and what kind of relationship you have with ushijima, making you shift uncomfortably. you take the hint to leave, spotting a stall selling handicrafts just a few stalls down.
the expressionless falcon soft toy you picked up reminds you of ushijima.
“we’ll take it,” ushijima appears next to you, handing over some cash for the toy that you are busy squishing.
“i was just looking at it…” you trail off, tilting your head to look at him.
he slant his head in confusion, “but you like it, do you not?”
but you don’t get a chance to respond before semi and tendo comes flying at you both from behind, almost knocking you over in the process. good, you think. you are afraid of where the road leads into unknown territory. unfamiliarity terrifies you, and for that reason, you want to stay precisely where you are, on the even ground that you know like the back of your hand.
good because if you went down that road and things end unpleasantly… no, you would much rather love him in silence than to risk losing him.
“what is it?” semi whispers to you conspiratorially as he glances at ushijima.
you frown at the little falcon. “is it just me, or is ushijima not his usual self?”
“what do you mean? he’s always like this around you.”
semi’s words leave you speechless. sure, you’ve heard a few people point it out to you in the past, but you didn’t think much of it at the time as you were too busy trying to put yourself back together. now, you can’t help but hear the words repeat in your mind.
you find yourself atop a small hill, sandwiched between ushijima and semi for the fireworks that opens the weekend long celebration of tanabata. just for a few seconds, you allow yourself to admire ushijima’s profile, his head turned towards tendo as he says something to the redhead.
boom. the first of the fireworks goes off, lighting up the night sky in showers of golden and blue. a smile finds its way to your face as you bask in the moment next to the people you care about, on a summer night in your final year of high school.
you tense as fingers lace through yours, too shocked to even look in ushijima’s direction as your eyes lock onto each and every bright firework that shoots upwards and explodes into colorful reactions that illuminate the dark sky. much like what he is to you, walking into your life, a blinding sun unaware of its own light, bringing life to the darkness in your heart, chasing away the darkness.
despite your thundering heart, your body relaxes, fingers tightening around his larger digits. the thoughts firing through your brain are too many, too fast to process, so you let them wash over you, choosing to focus on the present. it is a gift, you realize, on tanabata, from the stars orihime and hikoboshi themselves.
you can only hope that unlike the story of the star-crossed lovers, there will be a better ending for yours.

Can you do Unohana, Aizen, and Ichigo fall in love with a female reader who has Mitsuri Kanroji's personality?
Awww, this is such a cute idea! <3
Tumblr media
Unohana:
Loves your willingness to fight for what you believe in.
I think she falls in love with you pretty easily bc she's just so in awe with you.
She loves how kind you are and how you're always willing to help with squad 4.
She notices you sometimes watching her working or healing one of the members of her squad.
Unohana knows that she can count on you for literally everything.
If she's having a bad day, she comes to you because you can comfort her like no one else can.
She knows what kind of struggles you've gone through in life and she honestly looks up to you because you've gotten through them without complaining.
Unohana never goes anywhere without you by her side, you make her feel safe and at peace.
She thinks you are adorable and has no trouble at all expressing her love with you.
You reciprocate it obviously and Unohana has never been happier, always wearing a delicate smile on her face.
Aizen:
I definitely think that it takes him a really long time to fall in love with you.
At first, he finds you really annoying and cannot stand to be around you.
He hates how perky you are and how much energy you have.
Aizen says that you care too much or that you're too happy for someone working underneath him.
You usually just shrug your shoulders at his remarks, not really caring for them.
He slowly starts to tolerate you when you come to his aide in battle or always defend him.
He hates how much you compliment him because it makes his stomach twists into knots.
Like he knows his attractive, but hearing you say it makes him really confident.
Aizen tries to defy all of his feelings for you and scoffs at himself for being so damn ridiculous over you.
Lingering touches between the two of you and staring at each other for wayyy longer than you should be.
Hates himself for falling in love with you, but he takes a while to admit it.
Ichigo:
I think that since Mitsuri and Orihime has very similar personalities, falling in love with you is pretty damn easy.
Ichigo loves how caring and kind you are to everyone.
You could be super kind to your enemy who's trying to kill you, but you'll still compliment them.
He finds it adorable how excited you get, so excited that you'll run up to him and throw your arms around him, colliding his chest and knocking the air out of his lungs.
Ichigo doesn't flinch though, he just chuckles and holds you close.
I think that he's super protective over you, but he knows that you can hold your own in battle.
He's afraid to express his feelings bc he doesn't really know if you like him that since you act the same with him as you do with everyone else.
I mean you're nice to everyone, but you've really only gotten close with Ichigo.
Eventually comes clean about how he feels and you're overcome with joy, you end up jumping in his arms.

Everything surrounding Orihime's kidnapping in the Hueco Mundo arc of "Bleach" feels... weird and underwhelming to me. Like, I'm not fully certain what happened there. Did Ulquiorra hold those two random soul reaper escorts hostage until Orihime returned from saying her invisible goodbye, or was he just threatening her friends generally...?
The invisible goodbye thing has some interesting elements, but... I don't want to call Orihime a pushover for being threatened by genuinely scary people when she's feeling especially isolated, but it does seem to immediately and directly prove Urahara and others right when they said that Orihime is probably unsuited for the battlefield. Even medical / support people have to triage and improvise under fire and work within a greater structure! She (fairly!) does not like weighing lives!
(Though I do think that Urahara and others were very wrong to just tell Orihime to go away. She has no family! All she has left are her friends! And she's too self-sacrificing to ever willingly leave for her own sake! It would have been far better to keep her close and let her train for a medical / support position, so that she wouldn't get kidnapped like this (and would have had the confidence to work out some way to get around Aizen's weird mind games), when Ichigo is fucking notorious now for going apeshit if anything happens to even distant friends.)
When Ulquiorra first appeared in that space between worlds for an ambush, I was like, "OH SHIT, THAT'S COOL." This place is famously dangerous and if she and her escort disappear without a trace here, no one will know what happened. Perhaps Ulquiorra can destabilize whatever safety technology exists here and make it look like some mechanical failure. It's clever! (It also made me imagine Ulquiorra as some kind of deep sea leviathan, cleverly feeding on the plus souls and hollows passing over this trench, where the soul reapers don't think to look. Ulquiorra potentially first meeting Aizen by attempting to ambush him and swallow him whole in this inbetween place would be a great first encounter.)
And then Ulquiorra lets Orihime go to say a weird invisible goodbye? As part of Aizen's mind games to make the Gotei 13 think she left on her own and her feel like this kidnapping was partially her own choice? Unless Ulquiorra was holding those soul reapers hostage at this point in time, I'm really not sure why Orihime went along with this instead of trying to get help (besides her obvious feelings of isolation / depression + plot requires she be the damsel in distress to kick-start the Hueco Mundo arc). (There's REASONING, I'm just not fully persuaded by it.) It feels a little overcomplicated for me on Aizen's end, especially when I haven't yet seen it be paired with any other charisma or compelling persuasion from Aizen, this supposed master manipulator, when Orihime has plenty of buttons to press besides fear.
"Soul Society is broken and doesn't care for the poor people on the outside." "The Gotei 13 are corrupt and will ungratefully turn on people like Ichigo and Rukia as soon as they're no longer useful." "Hollows are people too, aren't they? And the soul reapers don't bother trying to help the people who need them most." "The Soul King is a threat to us all and I'm the only one who can stop him." There are so many lies and half-truths that Aizen could tell! This could be a point in time to showcase how he got so many people to follow him besides spiritual strength, and him being apparently nice to a vulnerable Orihime would be genuinely eerie given what we saw / know happened to Momo.
And this "making the Gotei 13 think that Orihime left of her own choice" story decision could work if Aizen had done more to frame her! But the fact that the Captain Commander immediately makes this assumption with so little evidence makes him look incompetent, when there are so many people who could immediately vouch for her and for the fact that it's way more likely she's been forced into something bad. Of course, maybe the story's point is to make the Captain Commander look bad at reading situations! Rather than simply ruthless for dismissing Orihime as lost and irrelevant. That gets a slight pass, I guess, but it's really such a wild and insulting and unnecessary assumption.
I think what I would have preferred to happen is OPTION 1) Aizen or underling kidnaps Tatsuki first and uses Tatsuki to get to Orihime.
This would bring Tatsuki fully into this arc instead of sidelining her again. It would be a nice culmination to the secrecy straining her friendships with both Ichigo and Orihime, and a nice bop to Ichigo's nose for trying to protect everyone on his own and his utter failure communicating danger to his friends and family. We could have a lot of fun stuff with Orihime and Tatsuki trying to survive together in this place. It would give Orihime some fucking motivation that isn't just "trying to help Ichigo". It would allow Orihime to find her strength by protecting the friend she has always viewed as being tougher and more confident. I need more women in this show who aren't made of relentless boob jokes.
OPTION 2) I would have preferred it if Aizen had found some way to locate Orihime's brother, Sora, and kidnapped him from Soul Society to use against her.
Aizen is supposedly a genius. It would track with the rest of the story if he could invent this technology. It would make the Gotei 13 look really bad if they have a way of helping families reconnect in the afterlife and just don't bother; and it would look really bad for them if Soul Society had utterly failed to be a safe place for Orihime's loved one. If Aizen is interested in Orihime's powers, he would probably be interested in seeing if her brother has any similar potential.
Option 2a is that Sora could be a regular plus soul and remembers Orihime. Aizen could have been experimenting on him and could be threatening to continue experimenting on Sora. Maybe being a regular plus soul in Hueco Mundo without the protection of a soul reaper's cultivation energy is dangerous. The air is toxic to him. He'll undergo hollowficafion again without special medicine from Aizen / Aizen's experiments keeping him as a normal plus soul, and he's terrified of becoming that monster again. Aizen coaxes Orihime to help him by claiming he's trying to find a way to cure hollowfication forever, so that Sora will be safe.
Option 2b is that Sora has no memories of Orihime or they've been suppressed, and Aizen has turned Sora into an Arrancar. Aizen claims that Sora was left vulnerable and starving on the outskirts of the Soul Society, abandoned to become a hollow again, or attacked by a hollow and transformed. Aizen has now used the Hogyoku to take Sora back to a mostly human state and given him Arrancar powers to "protect himself". Sora is grateful to Aizen for having saved him and as loyal as Ulquiorra. Aizen asks Orihime if she's prepared to fight her own brother. Doesn't she want to help him help Sora?
Honestly, I dig Ulquiorra so far and I'd like to keep him (he and Sora could have a weird not-twins thing going on), but you could totally replace his role in the story with Arrancar Sora and then put Orihime through the ringer torn between Ichigo and Sora. It feels so, SO weird to me that Orihime's dead brother never comes up again in this show about dead people and the story barely treats it as relevant.
OPTION 3) is that you bring both Tatsuki and Sora into it! Why not? Have amnesiac Arrancar Sora kidnap Tatsuki while Ulquiorra ambushes Orihime! Have Aizen threatening to turn both Tatsuki and plus soul Sora into hollows if Orihime doesn't cooperate!
I am feeling desperate for Orihime to have anything in her life again that is not her love for Ichigo. They don't have chemistry! The story is not taking the time to develop chemistry and bonding and partnership between them! Ichigo barely seems to remember she exists half the time.
Side note: I can barely fucking believe that Ichigo went off to train with the Visored without telling his family that he was leaving or where he would be. That's not a great sign for good mental health or healthy relationships! Which is probably (hopefully) the point! He could be dead in any alleyway for all his baby sisters know. That's not good big brother behavior! Ichigo has a real problem with not trusting anyone else to protect everyone (not without reason!), including not trusting his loved ones to protect themselves, and I'm not certain yet whether or not the story actually thinks this is a real problem and intends to have Ichigo fix his communication bullshit.
There is so much good, bloody material here if the story was genuinely willing to dig into the mess and make it hurt good. Instead, I'm watching Nel and her little hollow buddies do their fairly repetitive hijinks and Ichigo fight random nobodies who will not be meaningful to the story later. When Rukia finally ran into Aaroneiro pretending to be Kaien, I was like, "Oh, thank fuck, something with SOME emotional weight and compelling psychological turmoil again."

Could Orihime Reject Someone Out of Existence?
This is one of those statements that gets thrown around by Orihime fans a lot as a way to defend her strength, because Orihime's weakness has been a defining part of criticism surrounding her character throughout the early-mid 2000s (and even today tbh). And it's not limited to Orihime's fans either. I've seen a lot of people use this as criticism too ["Orihime could probably reject someone out of existence"...(hence it's bad that she didn't get the opportunity to do so)]. Nevermind the fact that there hasn't been a single instance where she felt a villain has even warranted that, or the fact that Soul Society goes absolutely ballistic on Quincies, who do wipe souls out of existence, I still find this to be an interesting discussion because it neglects to consider....anything we've been told about Orihime's powers. Granted, it's pretty scummy that Kubo elaborates on the structure/logistics of her powers only in extra-canon material like CFYOW (read by only a few dedicated fans) or Klub Outside (paid Q&A forum with restricted fan access), so I don't expect that everyone has done their required reading on this, but I still think it's a good excuse to actually talk about what she can and can't do.
What Orihime Can Actually Do (Basic Powers, Achievements/Growth)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the start of Bleach, Orihime has three basic shields - 1) Soten Kisshun - the one that rejects damage within a particular area, 2) Santen Kisshun - the one that rejects any attack aimed at Orihime & her allies (AKA, a traditional shield), 3) Koten Zanshun - the shield that forms within an external object and basically blows it up. I've seen people say Koten Zanshun is a akin to a small knife or shuriken, but in classic Kuboscience fashion, we see that it actually creates a shield that disrupts the union of matter. Ostensibly, Orihime could blow someone up if she's angry enough, and it is fun to think about Orihime blowing people up, so I understand any disappointment on that front, but. Moving on.
In Chapter 43, the Shun Shun Rikka clarify that they're not really "fairies," but a manifestation of Orihime herself. They are a part of her. I assume this works similarly to zanpakuto spirit manifestation. And IIRC, she is the only Fullbringer that has this type of manifestation (object affinity + spirit), when most Fullbringers only have an object affinity. They also mention that she needs two things to activate her powers: 1) her Heart, and 2) chanting the kotodama. I think point #1 should already make clear to us that Orihime won't be abusing her powers to hurt anyone any time soon, not unless she loses her 'Heart' like Ichigo did as a Vasto Lorde in Las Noches. Bleach signifies this as an Objectively Bad Thing. Whether we agree with that or we don't, it is the underlying mythos that sets apart our hero characters (Ichigo & his friends) from our villains.
So what can Orihime do, at this point in canon? She can regrow limbs and shield people from attacks, which she does extensively throughout the Soul Society and Hueco Mundo arcs. Here she is a) using two of her shields at the same time, and b) trapping Ichigo (the strongest guy in canon at any point in time) within her shield.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Over time, she develops Shiten Kosshun, a way to incorporate Tsubaki into an offensive technique without actually compromising on her distaste for excessive violence. Here's why that's a big deal. She can also use her Shun Shun Rikka long-range, which you can see when she's a) healing Chad post-Yammy (sorry for the random color screenshot, I got it off Twitter because I couldn't remember the exact chapter), and b) in 686, when we learn she uses them to keep an eye on Kazui. She also uses Santen Kesshun as a transport service throughout TYBW, which is not something she could do during the Lust arc, since she needed Uryu's help to get there. She also does not need to say her kotodama to activate her powers anymore, which is the result of constant and continuous training with Rukia pre-HM arc and Chad post-HM arc.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since Orihime isn't a shinigami, it might get a little difficult to measure her "growth" the same way we do with characters who attain bankai (the Bleach standard for strength). But in less than three years, Orihime developed a new shield, got faster at healing, and found new and inventive ways to use her powers every arc. She was already at lieutenant-levels of strength in terms of healing way back in the Soul Society arc, if Ieumura's testimony is anything to go by:
Tumblr media
So...what can't Orihime do? This is what I think I've seen a majority of people scratch their heads about, thereby making her seem ridiculously overpowered but severely underused.
Like any Bleach character of significance, Orihime is ridiculously overpowered, but I don't think this translates into "Orihime can do everything" and its implied "but she chooses to do nothing." We'll get into Orihime's choices and my opinions later, but I think now is a good time to talk about Orihime's natural limitations.
What Orihime Cannot Do
Two of Orihime's major limitations that I wanted to highlight are from Klub and CFYOW, like I mentioned earlier. You can read about them below.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To summarize: 1) Orihime can't recover spiritual pressure/is very slow at recovering spiritual pressure because of the tremendous strain it puts on her body and the fact that she can only heal what she can see, 2) Orihime can't heal someone with fatal injuries if "enough time has passed" (AKA if she gets to them too late after they've been injured). 3) Orihime can't actually revive someone if they've been evaporated. She needs a physical body.
These limitations are important, because they imply that she can't actually wipe someone out of existence. Interacting with reiryoku puts a strain on her. I once wrote that she could probably "reject" an egg that's just been fertilized by a sperm (we love a pro-choice queen!), but I doubt she could zoink a 20-year-old out of existence, because again: there is a time limit within which she has to act, or her powers won't be able to work. The only rejections she could do with people are abortions, and even then, I don't think she could do late-terms. And even then, if you can't see a cell with your naked eye, I doubt she could do those either. I've seen people wonder if she could cure cancers and my honest answer is: probably not until the symptoms were obviously visible.
The Shun Shun Rikka can't actually undo something if a certain amount of time has passed, so I highly doubt she could undo one's physical body, one's spiritual pressure...one's entire being. Even if she could, I doubt that would cleanse the spirit and send it to Soul Society. Instead, they would disappear/evaporate, which destabilizes the balance of souls (the way Quincies do it).
The reason I obsess about this is because limitations are a good thing when you're exploring a power system. There's always been this misconception that Orihime can basically "do anything," but that doesn't...mean anything. Orihime can't do everything, which means she is, like every other Bleach character, limited. Even Aizen's zanpakuto had a shortcoming, so I don't think Kubo necessarily nerfed her, and I think it does help contextualize what she can actually do vs what people expect her to do for no good reason.
Even if Orihime Could, Should She?
I enjoy powerscaling as much as the next guy, but I think the thing I like the least about it is its complete lack of literacy. Specifically literacy of the narrative.
In stories like this, heroes don't win over villains because they're objectively stronger. They win because they push an ideal that, in some way, represents the core values of the series. You were stronger, but I had the power of friendship on my side. You turned your pain into violence, but I turned mine into compassion. The entire point of Ulquiorra's arrogance was that he believed in what he could see – Aizen's strength. But he lost because of what he couldn't see – Ichigo & Orihime's hearts.
A part of the Arrancar saga is the long philosophical battle between Ulquiorra and Orihime, where Ulquiorra has faith in Aizen's watertight plans, his formidable army, his impenetrable kingdom. Meanwhile, Orihime has faith in her five scrappy best friends who invaded said kingdom overnight and have,,,,,only the slightest idea about what they're doing. Aizen's entire force operates under the belief that because they can do something, they should. Because they have power, they should use it, and if they can, seek more of it. Ichigo and Orihime, as a contrast, use their discretion and seem really upset about having to fight anyone at all. People point this lack of killing intent out as an exclusively Orihime thing, but it is very much an Ichigo thing too. Ichigo looking down at Grimmjow with pity-filled eyes is an exact parallel to Orihime looking at Ulquiorra with the same expression. People wanted Orihime to be vengeful against the Arrancars because they're her abusers. But Orihime sees them as victims. She pities the fact that they know nothing but brute violence — and that this is their reality. She sees them as someone to be saved.
But lest we think she's an irrefutable saint who gets off way too easy, it's clear she has some regrets about her place in the friend group and her dependency on Ichigo in particular. But, post-HM, she doesn't ask him to save her at all. Rather, the first time we see Shiten Kosshun, she's the one protecting him. I don't think Orihime has ever needed to kill someone to prove that she's a dimensional character in a series where even Ichigo hesitates to murder the guy who killed his mother. I think it's interesting that Orihime and Ichigo are largely sympathetic towards their villains unless they really, really fuck up, in which case Orihime has lashed out in appropriate doses (see: Ginjou, Yhwach.). I don't understand what vengeance would add to her character that compassion hasn't tenfold.
A last point I want to note is about weakness and our reaction to it. Many of us are shonen-brained to a point where we divide a story into victories and losses, battles won and battles thrown. But Orihime's character arc has never been about her victory over anyone but herself. Orihime can't reject someone out of existence, and even if she could, would she want to? Would Ichigo? Throughout the story, these two have been set to contrast characters who can and did. While their enemies sought to escape their own weaknesses (which Bleach conflates with being human) through transcendence, Ichigo and Orihime chose weakness constantly. They chose to be merciful, to be kind, to be vulnerable. I've seen countless jokes about how Ichigo loses 5 times before he can win for good. I've seen Orihime get her fair share of setbacks. But they come out of it victorious anyway, against all odds. And they aren't stronger because they have the power, they're stronger because they have the heart. I simply couldn't bear losing out on character writing like that.
