elona+ exists in a really weird design space, being a speed-focused turn-based rpg. the fact the speed stat scales high enough that the "turn" as a unit can mean anything from "an enemy attacks once" to "an enemy attacks 50 times in a chain, applying a stun to do it again before you can take a single step" is just so deeply, deeply interesting because of what it does to stopped time

stopped time is exactly what it says it is, and it's only as useful as the distance between the user and the enemy they're fighting. stopped time usually only comes in as an effect that freezes time for a single turn, so early on, when that distance is negligible, it's easy to wonder what the point of it even is

you get one free move without retaliation, without anything else being able to move, and that's really it. that's not useful when an enemy is doing maybe two turns to each of your turns on the high end

but as the numbers creep up, the actual utility of stopped time is really cool: a lot of fights actually do end up coming down to who's fastest, and stopped time completely negates that and declares the one using it "the fastest one, for one turn"

As much as I'm a Pharma apologist he is genuinely an asshole who acts completely unrepentant so something I think about for an eventual Pharma redemption fic is like. How do you write a redemption for a severely traumatized guy whose coping mechanism is to act like he doesn't care and the people who need to accept him don't like/care about him enough to go "hey it's okay everyone gets a second chance" and/or "wow Pharma is so radically different what caused that change."

But also like it's really hard to help someone who has no desire to/refuses to be helped and makes himself deliberately unpleasant to be around so like idk

It is kind of funny to think about how popular the Kuja Crocodile fan theory is when you take a step back and think about where that theory kinda originates from Now to be fair, I'm not 100% certain where the theory came from, I can only remember so much of what the fandom was theorizing back in 2008, so I may be speaking from my ass a little right now

But from what I do remember, back in Yee Olden Days, there was a lot of speculation about why the Strawhats got sent to their respective island by Kuma the way they did. A lot of people did notice how each island seemed meaningful one way or another to each Strawhat and tied into their characters except for Luffy, and everybody thought that was a bit odd. Mainly because we didn't fully know HOW Kuma's ability worked. Now, nearly two decades later, we DO know how Kuma's ability actually works; People don't magically travel to islands they have a secret connection to or anything, Kuma himself has to actively choose where he sends people off to, meaning Kuma looked at the Strawhats individually and picked out islands where he thought they'd be best off at. Luffy being sent to Amazon Lily is arguably no different; Kuma knew Luffy was the brother of the soon-to-be-executed Ace, but also a target of the WG (due to being Dragon's son). Amazon Lily was close enough to both Sabaody that Luffy would be able to return there relatively easily if he wished to, or he could try to befriend the Warlord Hancock, who was also being summoned to participate in Ace's execution, to hitch a ride from her to go and try to save his brother. The only challenge Luffy would have to overcome there was indeed befriending the Kuja, at least enough to be taken off from the island safely and alive.

But indeed, we only really know and can fully understand that now. Back in Yee Olden Days, the fans did just seem to think Kuma's ability might be a bit more mystical in nature, and thus people got really curious what Luffy's Secret Ties to the Kuja and Amazon Lily could possibly be. And naturally that lead to people speculating that maybe Luffy's mom was a Kuja. Because what other subconcious connection could Luffy possibly have to the island especially when it didn't seem like it would help him reach/achieve his dreams any faster either.

But then we get to Impel Down and Crocodile gets those transgenderism allegations thrown right in his handsome face (and people start shitposting about him being Luffy's other parent) And I think that might be where the streams crossed. People noted how Crocodile has his funny little reptile motif going on, and how the Kuja ""also have a reptile motif"", transgenderism allegations, badabing badaboom Crocodile could be a former Kuja, secret past SOLVED.

But the connection there is really weak though, isn't it? Especially when you considder that the Kuja don't really have a REPTILE theme going on with them. Yes, the snake motif is important to the Kuja, our beloved Hancock being The Snake Princess and the sisters having the Gorgon/Medusa (fake) backstory, but the animal motif is limited to just snakes, not reptiles as a whole (otherwise we could also speculate that Moria is a former Kuja because he's also named after a reptile). And more importantly, the Kuja have a big FLOWER theme going on for them, namely in, well, their names; each Kuja is named after some kind of flower/plant. Sure, Crocodile could have a secret deadname but we don't know if he does, there is no evidence to suggest either way (but also, depending on when you think he would have transitioned then him just being able to have a secret deadname is kind of up in the air (see: Crocodad timeline))

So if Kuma's ability doesn't have a magical way to send people to places they have ties to (whether the person knows it or not), and if Crocodile doesn't have any obvious, thematic connection to the Kuja, then the only reason people believe he could've been a Kuja is because... he might be trans. And... yeah. That's kind of a weak basis for a theory, isn't it

I'mma make a comparison between Lottie Matthew from Yellowjackets and Geto Suguru from Jujutsu Kaisen, and if you wanna avoid spoilers, either one of them, I recommend not reading below the cut (I start talking about her immediately, but he only makes an appearance from the 3rd paragraph below/4th in this post entirety).

Lottie is quite an interesting way of exploring what could be psychosis on what may or may not be a supernatural setting (that or she's clairvoyant, but we don't know if the supernatural is to be interpreted as actually being real, partially real or something they made up and solely real to them - i lean on the last one more). I do think there's a lot about her that you can empathize with, and her character is very well played by both actresses.

At the end of the day, she doesn’t know if it's real or not, and we see her struggling with the possibilities in the past and present time. Regardless, she is aware of her growing influence on the group on the teen timeline, and it's very interesting to see how she acts back then. In the present, we see this dichotomy in how she acts with her psychiatrist vs her compound/cult, which is another way of getting an insight into the mind of this mysterious character.

I do still hate her for being a cult leader, like that's not gonna go away, similar to how I hate older Suguru Geto (the actual Geto, not the fake one) for being a cult leader, but I do feel for who they were before and the loses and need for control that lead to the position they ended at.

They are both people who struggled with "powers" that their family didn't understand, both were already not doing so great, were struck by a massive tragedy that involved death, and then things just kept getting worse and worse, until one of the bad things that keep happening finally lead to them creating a cult.

Despite these similarities, these two characters are still very different, and at the end of the day my ultimate liking of them falls on the "what they could've been" based on what we saw/see of good traits the had/have, the fact that they could've actually done good, and in a healthy way, yet that didn't happen. The person they became works great as character progress and provides very interesting arcs, but I still would hate them if they were real people, even if I can feel for their pain and wish they had gone a different path.

to be completely fair, righteous, honest in the manner you have to be when concerning your fellow human beings, doyeon does not think yijun is all that bad.

however, that’s about the extent of credence he’ll allow the rapper, there isn’t even the added existence of a somewhat pleasant aid to his personality. he’s aware that’s rude, contradictory, hypocritical, and everybody has their ticks, he can’t exactly lord superiority in that regard.. not much anyway.

doyeon supposes the lack of such attributes could domineer as clear strengths; abrasive, exceedingly headstrong and rousing. it provides enough of a front, an argumentative expression which allows him to ease his way through most of everything, it’s a skilled strategy.

the look doyeon is receiving currently, though shadowed over in the dim lighting the two am dorm atmosphere offers, contains a scarce animosity, unusual for yijun.

doyeon will take anything he can get, which includes the little gleam of curiosity he sourly mistakens for something much better.

“you’re good, hyung, i’ll give you that one”.

the leader blinks, the rapper stares, amused, slightly content.

“elaborate on that one for me”.

doyeon feels idiotic attempting to ask, as if he would tell you, you think he’s a kid or something?

well he surely acts like one.

“you’re smart, can’t you figure it out?”

doyeon didn’t even have to ask a question.

he doesn’t want to say it, dreads the upcoming gaze and idiotic comments he’s aware will follow, already foreshadowing minhui’s shit eating grin, jalen’s drawling about his words being “after school special shit”, haeil would probably take the words with a nod, shyly shading his contentment in his typically reserved manner, and hasun.. well doyeon’s already aware of the advancing reaction with that one, he’s about the simplest member in terms of reaching out to.

and yijun appears evident, an ample display of vitriol he cannot exactly pinpoint. doyeon’s not.. nosy, he thinks, he hopes he doesn’t appear that way, yijun won’t care to leave it untouched, he has that knack for commenting on such specific things.

“i just— i mean.. i don’t know actually, we obviously aren’t going back to the company anytime soon, so can’t you keep a measure of civility while we’re stuck in this dorm for who knows how long?”

perhaps he’s asking for too much, his teeth grit and he prepares a physical wince at the responding silence, as if yijun will attempt a punch or some shit, of course he wouldn’t actually do that but doyeon has also kept in mind to not underestimate the little nuisance.

“civility is fine with me, it’s just—“

“jaehee yes lord i know you don’t exactly make it subtle..”

doyeon almost believes his sight has begun acting up once he observes the not so visceral reaction he earns. he guesses yijun has a measure of integrity, he wouldn’t yell outlandishly whilst the other members are fast asleep (or are staring endlessly at their ceilings, sleep is always a difficult feat), he can give him that one, he isn’t heartless by any means.

“i’ll try”.

and the mutter widens doyeon’s eyes so far they about pop from his sockets, it earns a slight breath, just barely the roots of budding laughter. doyeon is.. pleased.

he’s actually getting somewhere with this, who would even guess?

“what’s with that look? do you have no faith in me, hyung?”

doyeon blinks, silently nervous regarding the offense of his expressions. however, yijun’s got some well scrawled elation over his features, blossoming brightly again despite the lack of noticeable light permeating the room.

“no no it’s not that.. i just..” he’s unaware of how to continue that one, i just wasn’t expecting that from you? well that’s a rude way to continue it, he does care about how yijun feels, even if the rapper might lack some in that regard. “sorry, i do have faith in you”.

you’re better than you like to appear.

okay, so he won’t say that one, he’ll save it for a hopefully finer moment.

“you better, hyung, you know you’re one of my favorites right?”

doyeon falters for a mere second, tongue feeling heavy in his mouth, chilling air seizing his throat. it isn’t surprising by any standards, yijun is brash, yes, but not completely terrible, hopefully not completely terrible.

“ah, really”.

it’s less of a sure inquiry, his hand comes through his hair and he hopes there’s little of clear astonishment on his face, now that would be embarrassing.

yijun doesn’t appear to mind, possibly the brightest smile doyeon’s ever seen blooming over his features. “yeah, don’t tell hasun-ah i said any of that”.

and lord doyeon fucking chuckles, shaking his head in tandem with an exhaling breath. “i think you should go to sleep”.

the words settle into the air, yijun offers nothing more than his endless smile.

“sure hyung”.

doyeon surmises it isn’t much of a success, only one wall taken down, yet it’s a start. yijun’s got his ticks, yes, every human being does, but he really isn’t that bad.

Like ok I tend to go back and forth on whether to count myself as physically disabled or not, since I'm generally pretty fit & active. Like I bike all the time and enjoy hiking and whatever. But I think being stuck in bed for 12 hours recovering bc I was so tired I was nauseous (bc I got only 6.5 hours of sleep the night before + sat still for 4 hours reading) & my limbs all hurt so I had to hibernate just so my body would go back to the Normal level of fatigue and pain (Not none, never none) instead of the entire existence being oh so miserable...

That's not exactly fully able-bodied body behavior, I don't think.

The SDF Reliant crew have lowkey just become pseudo-OCs for me at this point. That's kinda what happens when characters have so few appearances in canon, but I still find it really funny how much I've just said "my city now". I decided I want to yell about them, so here's some of the headcanons I've come up with.

In mechquest, houses are the big question all GEARS students grapple with. My HCs on this front, based on vibes and fleshed out with added headcanons:

Starbuck originally kind of just joined Wolfblade because he wanted to look badass, but then found that the house of leaders who value helping others really fit with his love of mentoring other students. It was actually Xaria that convinced him to be bold and apply for his TA position with Denara- which he is forever thankful for.

Sally tends to throw herself into everything she does 100%, burning short and bright. She's prone to hyperfixation- eating the same thing for weeks on end until she gets sick of it, investing herself in yet another hobby that will end up in the hobby graveyard, etc. She wanted people who would match her intensity, so she joined Wolfblade. Now whenever she gets into another rabbit hole she usually is able to find a fellow housemate to "yes, and" her. This is only SOMETIMES a problem.

Dooder, as a certified chill jokester, was naturally drawn to Mystraven. He firmly believes in the importance of fun, and is always finding ways to drag the rest of the crew into relaxing and enjoying themselves every now and then. Sometimes that's a mini prank war, sometimes it's "accidentally" buying too much pizza to eat by himself, sometimes it's dragging everyone to a night out at the SC Lounge.

River doesn't actually know why she felt drawn to Runehawk, at first. Sure, she's always been a bit more nerdy than some of her friends, but she's not really as intensely academic as others in the house. She ends up very glad she joined, however. While she initially didn't put much stock in the house system at all, after the crystal asteroid incidents she discovers she has latent psychic abilities that she has no idea how to regulate. With the help of fellow Runehawks' research, she eventually learns to control her powers and bolster her already impressive piloting skills via their signature mana drive.

In my fic, I also don't plan on having my hero doing 5 different careers: Ravyn is a neurologist AND actively doing another degree, they don't have time to be delivering pizza. Instead:

Dooder works for Mecharoni- he finds the actual pizza-making pretty meditative, and any time customers are assholes he just amps up his chill demeanor until it's genuinely off-putting to whoever he's dealing with. He's the kind of guy who writes jokes or does drawings on the inside of your pizza box.

Sally works alongside the SPD as a conflict meditor and harm reduction support staff. Mostly, she thinks Chief Duncan is an idiot, and decides she can do a better job herself- so she sticks herself into his business and does. She also regularly does supply runs and odd jobs for all the businesses around Soluna- she's weirdly good friends with H.A.L.

River volunteers at the hospital sometimes, but more prominently works for the museum or with Mysterious Johnson to catch ghosts. She regularly invites the others to join her on museum jobs- and they eventually start investigating dusty old ruins together as group bonding 'field trips' whenever they have the chance between missions.

Starbuck has his TA job, and he's very happy with it, but in his early years he also worked for Mecharoni, and also did a brief stint as a stockboy for the Knife and Spork.

Some additional miscellaneous HCs:

Dooder tends to "pack bond" pretty easily- he actually tends to personify his mech, telling it that he loves it and regularly polishing it up nice. Sometimes he sings to it. He cries when it gets damaged and will mourn when it is eventually destroyed. He's had the same shitty pillow since he was like 9 and it's totally flat by this point, but he can't throw it out because it's always been by his side and he doesn't want it to feel abandoned. He would absolutely create stabby the roomba.

Due to the previously mentioned hobby graveyard, Sally has a lot of hidden talents she can whip out at a moment's notice to impress people. She's taken a course in mixology, she did a brief stint in cake decorating, she can knit and crochet and embroider pretty well, she knows how to do carpentry and plumbing, she's done dance lessons in break, ballroom, swing, salsa, tap, highland, ballet- even a few niche cultural dances from other planets. You name a hobby, and there's a 50% chance she's tried it.

River was a track and field star before she attended GEARS. Her long-distance running game was always top-tier, but she also regularly placed podium in sprints and relay events. She finds running to be good for clearing her head, so it's her go-to whenever she's stressed. One can tell how hard a week she's been having based solely on how much time she's spent on the treadmill.

Starbuck really loves giving people (and their mecha) nicknames and callsigns- the second he meets someone he starts watching for inspiration for their new title. Sally's callsign is 'Apple Core' (because of her regular consumption of the fruit in question, plus insisting she's hardcore), River's is 'Bubbles' (a play on her name, plus a joke after she burped loudly over all-hands comm), Dooder's is, much to his displeasure, just 'Dude' (though not enough displeasure to accept the alternative of 'Doughboy').

Sally runs competitive arm wrestling tournaments (mostly populated by Wolfblades). She manages the betting pools, and always throws her hat in the ring, too- only to be obliterated every time. Defeat only makes her try harder next time.

Dooder doesn't like to sing in front of other people- unless he's drinking, then he just won't stop. He has a really nice voice, but gets embarrassed if anyone tries to bring up his singing to compliment it. Everyone always looks forward to him pulling up to karaoke nights at the SC lounge.

Starbuck is notoriously bad at drawing- during his tutorials, any time he attempts to draw something on the blackboard, students make a game of "guessing" what he's trying to do like a game of pictionary. He's actually considered using stencils, but "Starbucktionary" has become too beloved, and the students would riot if he did.

River is a closet foodie. She cooks really well, but is a perfectionist who finds it very stressful, so doesn't do it very often. She's often on the hunt for new places to eat, though, and will try pretty much anything once. She keeps a notebook of reviews for different dishes at the places she frequents- though they're just for her personal benefit. She's still searching for the best steak in Soluna City.
