HADES
Tumblr media
Hades, in Roman mythology known as Pluto(n), was a son of Rea and Kronos/Cronus
Tumblr media
Patronage, symbols, and epithets
Hades is a god of the Underworld, the dead, and fortune (money). He is sometimes considered a god of dogs.
In Ancient Greece, he was pictured with dog by his side, wearing a helmet or a hat made out of dog's skin, Cerberus, pomegranate, keys or serpent. We can see him driving a chariot or sitting on his throne, surrounded by ghosts or skulls, which might give the wrong impression of him being the god of death. No, Hades is the god of the dead, while the god of death is Thanatos.
Epithets used to describe Hades are:
Agesander/Agesilaos - the One who carries away
Zeus katachthonios - Zeus of the Underworld
Nekrodegmôn - Receiver of the Dead
Moiragetes - Guide of the Fate
Tumblr media
Family
Hades was one of the six gods who were swallowed by Kronos/Cronus, well, except for Zeus, but that's a story for the other day. He was the oldest kid of Rhea and Kronos/Cronus, but after being swallowed, he was the last one to leave his father's body. Due to that, his family would look like that:
Parents: Rhea (titania of motherhood, mother goddess) and Kronos/Cronus, (titan of time, patron of harvest)
Siblings: Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Poseidon, Zeus, Chiron (from Kronos's side)
Tumblr media
Children
In some sources, it's said that Macaria was Hades's daughter, but her mother is unknown, in others, it's said that Hades and Persephone are her parents.
Except for that, Hades had no other children.

Myths
Abduction of Persephone
On a beautiful day, Persephone was playing with nymphs on the field, collecting flowers, dancing, and singing. Her mother, Demeter, was relaxing nearby, keeping an eye on her daughter. Suddenly, under the trees, appeared narcissuses, a big field of them. Persephone, who loved flowers, walked up to them and started collecting them. That's when Hades noticed his chance, appeared out of the ground, grabbed poor Persephone, and dragged her to his kingdom. The young goddess didn't know what to do, she wanted to be back to her mother and nymphs, it was dark in the Underworld. Hades, who was madly in love with Persephone, decided to let her go, he couldn't stand the love of his life to be sad and mad at him. But before she left, he gave her a pomegranate and she ate three seeds. Little did she know that this way she became his wife.
In the meantime, Demeter was looking for her daughter everywhere. As a goddess of harvest, her sadness made every plant die. After some time, she went to Zeus, her brother, and Persephone's father, and asked for his help. He sent Hermes to look for her, and the winged god found her with Hades. Demeter was mad at her brothers, yes she was also mad at Zeus that he let his brother take their daughter (in some myths Hades asked Zeus if he could marry Persephone and Zeus let him kidnap the goddess). But the deal was done, Persephone ate pomegranate and was meant to become Hades's wife. But Hades was a nice guy, he didn't want his sister and his wife's mother to be mad all the time and sad, when Demeter was sad Persephone was too. He offered a solution, Persephone would spend only 1/3 of the year with him, and the rest she would be on the ground. Demeter agreed with that. And that's when Persephone leaves to live with her husband, the world dies, and Demeter cries for her daughter. The world welcomes autumn and winter. But when the young goddess comes back to her mother, everything is back to life, it's spring and summer.
Orpheus and Eurydice
Orpheus was a musician, a very famous one. His music helped him find a wife, Eurydice (I won't be getting into the story here because we're not stealing Hades's light, haha). One day, Eurydice was bitten by a venomous snake and died. Orpheus decided to go and bring her back from the Underworld. He found the entrance and got in. Whenever he found an obstacle, he played on his harp and went through. When he finally reached Hades and Persephone, he asked the king to let him take his wife back. Hades wasn't so eager to let him, but Persephone asked Orpheus to play something for them, and maybe then they would let him take Eurydice back. He did as she asked and brought her to tears with his song. She then asked Hades to let him take Eurydice back to the outside world. Seeing his wife ask, he couldn't say 'no'. He let them leave, but Orpheus had to believe that his wife is behind him.

orpheus and eurydice: a dbd essay
Orpheus and Eurydice is a tragic love story, they call it love at first sight and marry after Orpheus returns from an expedition but she unfortunately dies from a snake bite. Orpheus travels to the underworld and begs Hades to let him take Eurydice back with him, Hades agrees but on the condition that Orpheus cannot look at her until they are both back into the light and so their journey begins. Orpheus relies on Eurydice's footsteps alone to know she is following him and after a long journey they finally make it out, however Orpheus turns to look at Eurydice too early as she had not made it into the light yet which leads to her being taken back into the underworld forever.
Charles, without knowing the entire story, compares him and Edwin to this tragic tale. As they are travelling out of hell, Edwin stops him to confess his love which lead Charles to asking it this were 'one of those Orpheus and Eurydice' moments to which Edwin has to explain it ended in tragedy and Charles to reveal he never finished it.
Despite Charles having never finished this story he knew the main parts: Orpheus and Eurydice were in love, Orpheus would travel to the underworld to bring her back, Orpheus couldn't handle being apart from Eurydice and that Hades allows Orpheus to bring Eurydice back. Charles knew all of this, and with him and Edwin standing on the stairs to Hell, couldn't help but compare their situation to that or Orpheus and Eurydice.
Charles didn't fully understand his own feelings at this point but he knew that there was no one he loved more than Edwin, no one else he would go to Hell for and that no one is more important to him than Edwin, and so it only made sense that he bring up the one love story he knew could relate, the love story where Orpheus travels to the underworld just for Eurydice, the story in which Orpheus can't bear to be without his one true love he will do anything to bring her back. This in many ways suggest that even without Charles fully understanding it, he truly loves Edwin in the same way Edwin loves him.
Charles and Edwin's story almost goes backwards to Orpheus and Eurydice's, They meet each other in their deaths but they immediately decide that they want to spend eternity with each other and so they spend thirty years together before Edwin is tragically dragged back to Hell. This leads Charles to bargain so he can go to Hell and save Edwin which then leads to Edwin confessing his love on the stairs of Hell. The stories share many similarities but also a fair few differences, the key one being theirs ends happily while Orpheus' and Eurydice's ends tragically, and so it only makes sense that they were compared to each other.
Edwin loves Charles with his entire being, Charles is the best person he knows and is the only person he seems to truly feel comfortable around, they met just after Edwin escaped Hell and despite him not believing he's good with people he very quickly grew on Charles. A lot of Edwin's story revolves around him figuring out his own emotions, his attraction to boys but more importantly what love is for him. He grew up in a time period where public displays of affection, even with a man and woman, were frowned upon and then he died at age sixteen and was stuck in Hell for seventy years. Edwin doesn't know what love is or what it means to him and so a lot of his storyline follows along him figuring it all out. He grows to find out that he is in love with his best friend and he needs him to know, he knows there's a chance doesn't feel the same but he still needs him to know.
Edwin knows the story and Orpheus and Eurydice, he knows it ends tragically but he also knows that it is still a love story. He knows all of this and he listens to Charles, immediately after he confesses his love, compare them two too that story. Edwin knows Charles doesn't feel the same, or at least not yet, but he also knows that Charles compared them to one of the greatest tragic love stories and so while Charles may not replicate the feelings he at least knows that Charles values him just as much as he values Charles.
Charles comes from a time period where being queer was more of a thing but still not widely accepted, he lived at a time where they existed but they were still often the victims of hate crimes and he grew up during the AIDS pandemic so being queer wasn't the best thing still. He also unfortunately grew up with an abusive dad who wanted Charles to be perfect, Charles would promise his dad he would do better and be better so it's no wonder that Charles doesn't fully understand his own feelings. Charles is most likely bisexual but he has yet to figure out his feeling regarding that and yet he still compared him and Edwin to one of the most famous tragic love stories.
Charles may not completely understand his feelings but he does know that Edwin is 'the most important person in the world' to him, that he is the only one he would ever go to hell for and so to him it was a perfect story to compare them too. Charles proceeds to tell Edwin they have 'literally forever to figure out the rest' because while he doesn't claim to be in love with Edwin back he knows how important Edwin is to him and he knows that there is something else to it.
Orpehus and Eurydice were soulmates, they were made for each other and Orpheus could not bear to live without Eurydice which led to him travelling to the underworld for her. Edwin ad Charles are soulmates, they met at the worst times in each others lives/deaths and they chose to spend eternity with each other all the same, they knew the couldn't live without each other and so Charles travels to Hell just to bring Edwin back.
these two stories have so many similarities its almost impossible not to connect them, two people who are made for each other, who cannot live without each other and who are prepared to go to great lengths just got be with each other once again.
along with similarities they're also so different. They're both tragic loves stories but in different ways, Orpheus and Eurydice ends tragically meanwhile Edwin and Charles begin tragically. Orpheus and Eurydice are separated by death meanwhile Charles and edwin are brought together by it.
Orpheus and Eurydice are the perfect tragic love story to compare Edwin and Charles to because it's the only one that really encapsulates their story so well. Charles has a lot to figure out in terms of his feelings but he knows for sure that he loves Edwin and that he couldn't live without him and so he travels to Hell just to bring him back and lucky for him he succeeds.

Lighting in a bottle
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Status: scrapped/unfinished (possibly forever)
TW: Implied/Referenced Character Death/Suicide
Pair(s): Implied/Referenced Raoulstine (altho I wouldn’t really count it)
Note: what better way to celebrate my comeback than by posting an unfinished piece of POTO one shot which has been laying in my Google Docs for two months and a half now?
loosely inspired by this scene from Final Lair from the Romanian 2023 production (I will never shut up about how much I love the Romania production)
one day, hopefully, I’ll find the inspiration to write a more in depth piece surrounding this scene and maybe even a full fic based on this production. anyways, enjoy. xx
“I want you to be my one and only. . .” Eurydice sang as tears began to form in the corners of her stormy gray eyes, but pressed them shut as she stepped back to the gates of Inferno, almost as if she didn’t want him to see those salty crystals of sorrow dancing in her gaze. He felt his heart cracking when the metallic sound of the gates closing made it to his ears, biting his tongue so he wouldn't scream in agony. Or talk at all, because if he did he wasn’t sure he would have achieved anything good.
“Tell me where you wish to go, and I will follow you. . . ” already up a few good stairs, Orpheus offered his hand to his beloved one, ready to take his loved one home.
Then the gates shut closed, yet unlocked, and like a prisoner he found himself crawling to the bars, only to catch the most horrendous view his damned eyes had ever laid on.
Eurydice took her lover’s hand, her cheeks red and swollen with tears.
“Let us share a day, a year, a lifetime. . .” Eurydice ended their duet in a woeful manner, her voice trembling as she embraced Orpheus and they climbed back into the Living World together.
Orpheus triumphed. He saved his adored Eurydice from the Underworld. They were going to spend the rest of their lives in bliss and joy, bathed in each other’s love forevermore.
And he would rot in these damned cellars for the rest of his miserable existence.
‘Come back to me.’ he wanted to say. ‘Come back to me and I promise I will be good. I will cherish and adore you like my most valuable possession. I will swallow you in the most ethereal tunes possible by daylight, and at night I will sing you to sleep. I will love you, but I will try to do it good this time: I will try to love you like a man, I will try to love you as he does! I will love you better than him! I will do anything! I will get you everything your golden heart desires and lay them at your feet! I will wipe away those poisonous tears that had dared sheed across your beautiful cheeks! I will make you happy! I will. . .’
I will love. I will set your wings free. I will mold myself into a man for you. But not a single I should’ve done better. I should’ve been better. I should’ve listened. . .
He rose from the ground, knees shaking, his own eyes trembling and glassy as he held back his own tears. Then he gazed at the rope only feet away from him, hanging in the middle of the cellar. Tied in a perfect, round loop, tight enough to steal one’s breath and never give it back. It was a merciful way to take one’s life, he thought. It spared the man of the cold blade of a knife, the painful kiss of a bullet at the temple of the head. It was a human death, something which was not granted anymore, not even to the less guilty ones. Nowadays even being born was considered a crime if your eyes or hair color or lips weren’t of the liking of your own parents. Or if your face was the result of all human catastrophes put together, no matter how full of love your very heart was.
No pain. Only for a moment, and then it would pass, fade away into the abyss of the unknown and drag his soul along with it. His fists wouldn’t clench anymore, his brows wouldn’t frown anymore in anger and envy and hatred would finally stop pumping life into his miserable heart.
He would finally be pure.
‘. . . I will even cease to exist for your own peace .’

Lately I found myself thinking about James/Miranda relationship as a reversed version of Orpheus and Eurydice’s story, especially towards the end of it. Not because these two stories match well (they do not) but just because I like making this kind of classical comparisons and I'm stuck from a bit on the fact that, right before her death, for the first time Miranda was the one to refuse the progress to look back at the past.
After the loss of Thomas, James let himself slip into a darkness comparable to the underworld, a darkness which so often threatened to swallow him whole. He walked on a thin line between a reign of death and an island of life, and if that darkness was that reign, Miranda was his island.
During their whole journey of processing their grief and climbing their way back to a life that could be called such, she was the one always trying to drag him towards the light. To her, the life that might have been waiting for them in the future was that light, while the past was the darkness, and not because she deemed it forgettable or unimportant, quite the contrary indeed, but because while she knew how to keep and remember the beauty of that past and the light of it, along with the sorrow, she knew perfectly well how different it was for James. How he could remember the beauty of it, of course, but also knew how to put it aside in favor of the rage and the guilt, his gaze clouded by the pain and the unacceptable shame.
She said it herself: she didn't want to forget that past, not the bright side of it and neither the inescapable sadness of it, its tragedy being the spring of that very beauty, the ruins existing only because there was something precious to be ruined in the first place; and at the same time, what could the dark of it matter, the injustice, the grudge, when it condemned the both of them to never be able to see the light again?
First time I heard their discussion in ep.VII after knowing the whole story, I wondered how could she ask something like that of him, to forget and pass over what they had done to him just to gain a liveable life, but recently I've actually been wondering : how could she not?
I'm not taking any side in this, as I recognize Miranda's thoughts to be the most reasonable ones as they often are but at the same time I can't say I wouldn't act as stubbornly and desperately as James did in that situation, they're just really different ways to conceive one’s own existence, influenced by their own problems and conditions and mind. All I'm saying is that Miranda was able to see the light even if just from a distance, she was able to hope that one day they would have been able to truly see it. James was never.
He just lied to himself about the possibility of it. He had plans and tactics and strategies, but for how I see it, those were all desperate attempts to convince himself of the contrary. He couldn't, maybe because of his personality, maybe because he knew that his situation wasn't one that could ever allow him to found real light in that world, maybe just because he loved her less than how much he had loved Thomas, less than how much she loved him, but whichever was the reason, he couldn't afford to see the light after that abyss, and I think Miranda was the first to know that. The one who knew him like no other, the one who loved him like no other. She knew that without help he would have never really been able to reach the end of that dark state of being. And she tried. She tried to help him in so many ways, because she loved him, she really did, and because she had the damn right to claim at least a decent life for herself.
And here we come to the end, to Charles town.
Charles town could have been her success. Charles town was James’ surrender. For the first time she glimpsed one real chance of having him back, she saw in him the real intention to leave all of that darkness behind, to follow her, not leaving the past behind, never, but learning to move forward, finally allowing her a chance for a new life together.
He was actually ready to accept even that miserable condition Peter Ashe imposed on him in order to get rid of the darkness, to climb to the light -as short lived as that might have been, at this point- to give Miranda a better alternative than the ones he had been able to grant her up until that moment (as I think his whole Charles town plan was led by the purpose of doing something to save her): as useless as we all know that would have been, accepting that bargain has probably been the most selfless thing James has ever done, even if he did it also for himself in a tired, desperate and contorted way.
But Charles town wasn't only this to Miranda.
Charles town was the discovery of the betrayal, because I believe she understood it all the moment she first saw that clock, I'm sure of it. Charles town was her umptheen attempt and her umptheen sacrifice.
I think that must have been to her a similar quest to the Maria Aleyne's one: respecting James by telling him the truth, something he deserves to know, even knowing how he will react to it, knowing how impossible it would become for him, then, to go on with his plan, granting him a one way ticket to that darkness, or keeping him in the dark, bearing alone the weight of that knowledge, accepting to live with the helplessness to remedy that fatal injustice, only in the hope to finally make him reach that light?
Would Orpheus reveal Eurydike a truth which risked pushing her back into the underworld just because it might be right for her to know it?
Still, things had been different, more desperate, back to the Maria Aleyne. Now the chance to succeed was real.
And at first she made that difficult choice, which was selfish in a way, but definitely selfless in another, all at the same time.
And she did it because she loved him.
She loved him so much that when she glimpsed, in that light, the prospect of losing him, she had to recognize that that light was -as James would have put it in the future- only their light, the light of a world the two of them couldn’t be part of anymore.
She loved him so much that she had to look back. To the past, to him, because her James was still behind her, still in the dark, the only place where he was allowed to stay, and only that version of him was the one she truly loved. She loved the real James, with all his broken parts, not the one that could be seen under the lights of their lies.
So she couldn't help giving up that false light, because she had wished for tranquility, a normal life -as probably anyone in her conditions would have done- but she was not disposed to give up the man she loved in order to gain that, as she hadn't been in the past, when the prospect of the future had been only dark and still she had not deserted the ones she loved.
And when she turned back, this time trying to shield him from that light, the darkness at the pit ended up swallowing them both.
Miranda died, and James was dragged back full force and imprisoned into the worst version of himself, the ruthless, autodestructive one.
There are two versions of the story of Orpheus and Eurydice, and I think that the two of them taken together perfectly represent James’ reaction to her death and its circumstances.
In Virgilius’ one, Eurydice slightly resents Orpheus for his action, for his “folly” -as it is called- and (if we may call it that) for his selfish gesture of looking back, that she paid with her second chance to be alive.
After Miranda's death, James dreams of her reminding him how he had resented her “because they were so close” and of course since that's a dream is what he knew he had felt. But that was…collateral to the condition he had been left stuck in. That was the childish resentment of having explicitly denied something he knew deep down he couldn't have.
In Ovidius’ one instead Eurydice doesn't blame him because she can't resent being loved, and I think this is what James really felt. After all, looking straight at the truth of the situation and looking back at their shared history, I think there were no ways for him to actually, rationally resent her. (And in fact in his last dream about her she uses a past tense, “you resented me”, hinting that was something he had felt only in the moments when he was at his worst as when, always in the dream, he heard her apology).
Moreover, I think he perfectly understood the meaning of those last moments of hers, how important it was to her to make her voice be heard in that moment. In fact, despite the clear and growing doubt and rage (and worry) on his face while Peter and Miranda spoke, he didn't say a word, he let her speak, despite knowing the risks  and I think this is amazing and just proves how beautiful and respectful their relationship was, and that there were no way he could actually deem her responsible of their failure in that mission (doomed to failure since the beginning ‘cause of the truth).
What hurts even more about her death is the fact that it looks like they got closer to each other once again during that trip, as they hadn't probably been in years, and then…everything got lost forever.

I feel like I wanna go see Hadestown like... six more times, just so I can focus on one specific character each time because they all have such unique little quirks to their performances. But specifically:
Hades has this super camp, cocky confidence. Like, when Chant 2 was happening and he and Persephone were circling around the workers and Orpheus, the man was STRUTTING!!! He had more of a hip sway that any other character, he was on a cat walk and we were all just peasants! You coud tell me right now Zachary James has a background in drag and I would believe you wholeheartedly, I am convinced that man can walk in heels better than I can. Right after the lights shorted out after 'I CONDUCT THE ELECTRIC CITY!' man stood there like a class 1 slut with 'tell you wat, young man' like, sir? Sir?!! Like I don't know, the patrick page recordings always had something very dignified to them but this Hades was SEXY and he knew it! But at the same time, he was so insecure about Persephone. Thre were so any instances whre he tried to reach for her, and she moved away, or pushed away, and it was breaking him, visibly. Such fantastic nuance. Like every time he tried to be vulnerable with her, it failed and so he dialled up the cockyness instead and it just got away from him. That's what it felt like. Like 'shit, well, now I committed to this now I gotta see it through!'
And Hermes giving supreme butch energy, flirting with Persephone. Hades was worried about his wife in the arms of the sun? Bro, you should be worried about the God witth feathers on their feet, they're out to steal yo woman. But also, the way Hermes knew how it all would turn out thrughout the whole thing. Like, with the other characters, it doesn't feel like that. But Hermes is the narrator, they break the forth wall, they know the song. It's in the way they gently touch Eurydice's shoulder before the show even starts, as if asking for permission to tell her tragedy again. It's in the way they look at her when she goes to pay for her passage into the underworld, the unspoken 'are you sure? We can still do this another way it doesn't have to be like this' but because they know how the story has to go, they can't actively interefere. Because that's not how Hermes operates. The sour disappointment when they tell Orpheus that Eurydice is gone, and that she cried his name before she went, there is veiled accusation there that Orpheus could have - should have - stopped this but wasn't listening (and maybe even shame that Hermes themselves did not stop it even though they knew what would happen?). The long stretches of silence at the Road to Hell reprise, with Orpheus just sitting there, sobbing, and Hermes just letting it settle in for everyone - no music, no other sounds, just the very quiet '...It's a sad song...' Oooofff.
And of course... Orpheus. I don't know if it's just the different voice and accent, or if it's because I saw this one live, but the Broadway recording always sounds very theatrical to me whereas Dónal Finn's performance was RAW. Absolutely gut-wrenching. He managed to bring across the sweet charme and comedy in Wedding Song, the hesitant insecurity in his own abilities in Epic 1, the determination in Wait For Me 1, where he is still confident that he can do this, that he can bring his love back. And then he gets to the Undeworld and is completely broken. Is It True is actually devastating. The way he first just lies on the floor, forcing the words out in pain, in resignation, before the workers hear and join his song and he gathers new strength and not just strength but also the ANGER that this is supposed to be the world when he KNOWS the world can be better than this. Like, in the recordings, I knew from the lyrics this was a song meants to unite the workers in protest but DAMN in the performance I actually wanted to stand up with him! And then he sings his whole heart out in Epic 3 and for a moment there, he's that boy again when Eurydice says 'you finished it!' and he goes 'I did!' and throws his hands up in glee. And it looks like everything is going to work out. But Doubt Comes In tears all of that away, because the entire time, when he sang there were others there with him. When he sang Epic 3, everyone sang along like it was supposed to be, like Hermes said 'the Gods sang their song of love, and the world sang it with them' but when he sings now, on the dark road, there is no echo, there is no one answering his song, it's just him and the cold wind, and the doubt personified as the fates in the back of his mind, and he is absolutely losing it. You GET why he turnes around. It's not because he doubts Eurydice's love. It's because he doubts that HE is actually worth walking back in the cold for, it's doubt that he would not be tricked by the Gods. He doesn't doubt her love, he doubts himself! And it was devastating. A devastatingly raw performance. I hope he wins awards for this show, I've never seen anything like it.

Lyrical analysis you say? 👀👀
I happen to be a bit of a musician myself (I was in my middle school choir and am lying to myself)
Would love to hear your thoughts on anything Hozier has written, but particularly Talk bc I also have thoughts on that one
okay this is nothing to do with bg3 so anyone who isn't interested feel free to skip over this. that being said i do think this song fits very well with gale when he was trying to get mystra to forgive him while he's in the tower.
if u are interested it's below the cut :)
this song is a fukin masterpiece first of all, i LOVE hozier. his lyricism is fucking incredible and never fails to sweep me completely off my feet.
this song is lyrically one of his more straight forward songs, if you know the context behind what he's referencing.
essentially, the story of orpheus and eurydice is a greek myth. orpheus finds his beloved wife eurydice dead, and sings a song so sad and beautiful that the gods take pity on him. he visits hades and hades agrees to let eurydice live again, so long as orpheus doesn't look behind him as he leaves. orpheus is nearly at the exit, only a few paces away, but he loses his faith and turns to check she's still with him. she's a few steps behind him, right where hades said she would be, but as soon as their eyes meet she's dragged back into the underworld.
now, when hozier is referencing this story he's specifically comparing himself to all of the best qualities of the characters in the myth. orpheus' devotion to his wife, the hopeful feeling he had that he could save her, the overwhelming need he felt to see her that overpowered his ability to follow hades' instruction, and eurydice in her final moments forgiving orpheus anyway because she loves him so much. this verse is hozier promising the person he's singing to endless devotion.
however, his next verse says that he's imagining all of the (presumably) indecent things they could do together. he admits that he's sweet talking them so that they dont see through to how badly he desires them.
the second verse goes back to him talking about how devoted and loving he can be. he calls true love a "lost myth" but insists that he will be the exception. he's different to others, he truly loves them. through the next few lines he's essentially selling himself as the solution to all of their issues surrounding love, he'll be the release that he believes they won't truly find in anyone except for god at the end of the world. he's bigging himself up again, he's essentially trying to sell himself to this woman.
you can view this song in a couple of ways, in my opinion. this song can be a demonstration of true devotion and love, hozier offering himself up to worship this person and telling them all of the ways he will cherish them. but i think it can also be seen as manipulative. he's sweet talking them even though all he's really thinking about is bedding them; think like a guy at a bar who knows all the stuff to say but is gone by the time you wake up in the morning. i think it can also be a mix of both, he truly loves them but feels unworthy. he thinks if they knew all the ways he thought of them they wouldn't be interested, so he peacocks and promises and parades around in the hopes of impressing them.
the songs in d minor key. by placing it in this key he's purposely evoking certain emotions/creating a specific atmosphere. d minor lends itself especially well to creating a melancholy or anxious atmosphere. a lot of songs about grief and sadness are in d minor. christian schubert, in an essay he wrote in 1784, uses the term "melancholy womanliness" to describe the key. i think that perfectly describes the atmosphere hozier creates in this song. a lot of people say that hozier is "for the lesbians" (based as hell btw) because a lot of the songs he writes are about true love and devotion to women. he's reverential in the way he talks about passion and romance, and it fits really well into the female gaze. you could view this song as him acknowledging this ("imagine being loved by me" could be him talking to the listener).
the song is 77bpm, which classifies it as 'andante' (moderately slow). it gives it a slow relaxed feeling, which really sells the whole vibe of him trying to woo someone. combined with the prominent baseline and the choral backing vocals, the song feels like worship. it feels like laying your soul bare.
it's no doubt his sexiest song. the song reeks of sex and sensuality. down to every detail this song is about seducing someone. it's romantic, sensual, and overall an absolutely beautiful piece that perfectly demonstrates hozier's prowess with lyricism. one of his main strengths is his ability to paint a vivid picture with his words.
this is quite a simple and surface level analysis of the song as i've whacked it together but in conclusion: beautiful sexy song and i am in fact imagining being loved by him.

Persephone never really spent six months of the year in Hades, and six on the surface. That's not how Hades works. Instead, she was permitted to drink from the Lethe and be born as a mortal woman. Demeter had to hide her own divinity and bear a half-mortal child, who must never be told of her nature, or she would be dragged back to her "husband" in Hades. This cycle continued, over and over, with Persephone trapped for however long her most recent mortal life had lasted, aching for the next time she could walk in the sun. Each of her lives was haunted by a dark spectre, a rash of unexplained deaths, a tragedy written by the conflict between her mother and her fated husband, who guarded her jealously from any who might love her.
And then, she became Eurydice.
Orpheus loved her in a way she had never known; could never have imagined. He taught her to love him in just the same way. Hades could not abide that, for he was a jealous God, and he contrived the snake who would separate Eurydice from her beloved.
He never could have imagined that Orpheus would follow her into the underworld.
Would remind Hades himself of what a truly reciprocal love meant.
So Hades...made a deal. She can follow you out of here. But you cannot look back. If you look back, she is mine.
The story we tell is one of tragedy, a warning, that maybe next time it will be different.
But here is the truth.
Sometimes, it is different.
Sometimes, Orpheus has faith.
And when that happens...Hades is the one who drinks from the Lethe. And Persephone assumes his throne. And Orpheus is trapped in the underworld, aching to leave, until a deal is struck that lets him return to the world above for a lifetime at a time - and maybe, someday, in one of those incarnations, he will find someone who loves him enough not to look back.
And that's why it's a fucking tragedy.

Note
if the ROs were in an orpheus/eurydice situation, would they look back or make it out without looking?
Dominik: he knows you should be right there but you're too quiet. he can't hear your steps and you won't answer when he calls your name. thinks that because he's blind the rule probably won't apply to him, but of course he had to be arrogant and think he knew best-- and looks back right before you made it to the surface-- and it breaks his heart as you start to fade away. He can't see it, but he knows; oh, he knows. He felt your presence right before you disappeared, like a cruel joke meant to be funny to anyone but him. Raw emotions drip from his face like oil from a painting and he swears to get you back no matter what.
Teht: they force themselves to not look back. The strong winds that beat against their face are a good excuse to turn their head and spare you a quick glance but they think of that small possibility of losing you again and ultimately decide to keep on going. they'll try to talk to you along the way, "just a bit long longer", "we're almost there, love." Please be there, love.
Zet: it's a simple task, really. don't look back and you'll have your lover in your arms once you're out of the underworld. But they can't feel you. You're quiet, barely a shadow following them. They don't even know if you're really there. They fall to their knees and clutch their hair in two strong fists. You're not there, had you been you'd have pressed a hand on their shoulder telling them to keep going, that it's okay. That they're doing fine. And when they turn, you're there, right behind them-- a ghost hand on their shoulder and a mouthed 'it's okay'.
Miata: she's tempted to look back many instances but she knows she's going to lose you, and if there's a chance that Hades was lying and she's going to lose you anyway, she might as well not have the burden fall on her shoulders for a second time. Miata doesn't look back, but she really hopes that you're right behind her, following.
Narkis: there's no way he's looking back. He'll hold his half of the bargain and if there's any chance that Hades is lying Narkis is going to wreck havoc to bring you to the land of the living once more-- to have you in his arms and feel you again, to tell you how much he loves you. He saves those words for when he can see you again, because there's no way he won't.
Prisca: trusts that Hades is being truthful and doesn't look back. You're there, you have to be. And if -- God forbid -- you're not she would tear the underworld apart to have you back. But even as she doesn't feel you behind her she hopes knows that the God did not fool her; for, he too, is in love. And just as their love, hers is destined to end in a tragedy. She knows it to be true and she knows too well what happens to those who defy fate, but for the first time, she doesn't care.
Herian: they're tired and their mind keeps wondering back at you; if you're tired too-- wouldn't you rather have them stop? But what if you didn't want to come back? What if this is hurting you and they can't hear you? But you wouldn't follow if you didn't want them, would you? ...Are you even following? They'd fight back the tears that prick at the corners of their eyes and keep on going. They grit their teeth every second of the agonising hour that they can't see you, tempted to turn their head and give you one long loving glance. They're doing this for you,-- at least so they tell themself. Selfishly dragging your essence behind even at death. You can't find peace with them around, can you?
Shin: their face has a small, sad but sincere smile. You can't see it but you can hear it in their voce as they talk to you. The muscles on their back and neck flexing every time they feel tempted to look back at you, but they ultimately don't and at times you wish they would-- and so do they. To shower you with all the love pooled in their eyes in the harsh path of the underworld; that here too, even as a shade they still have eyes for no one else but you. but they don't want to lose you again and if there is any chance that the deal holds true they're not throwing this opportunity away. But their smile flatters and their lips twitch; they turn their head slowly but right before they break they look ahead and throw another step forward. Their back faces you but it breaks the winds from touching you as you keep on following. And their presence keeps you warm even when you no longer know what warmth feels like.
Kalipso: they gnaw at their lip, tempted to to turn their head and look just to make sure that you're really following. but they remind themself of the deal and of you, and how incredibly happy you make them-- and of what an incredible experience your love is and to lose it forever just because they were careless and couldn't hold back for just a bit longer-- no, absolutely not. They won't accept it. They won't let you down; they're not going to be the reason of your demise. How could they when all you've given them has been tender loving, a belly of laughter and an accepting mind. To repay it by forsaking you would be their worst crime.
Deoki: they pride themself in how logical and cold they can be under the most tense filled circumstances, but as they walk up the dark path and their steps are the only ones echoing back, they begin to flatter and the doubts they had locked away start eating their way out and in their mind; they call your name once, twice but you don't answer and there's nothing more that pains them than the images implanted in their head. You're either there, desperately trying to make a sound, or they're in a fool's errand and they've been talking to themself this whole time. But they still don't turn and they won't until they reach the surface and feel your arms around them as you come to hug them once more. They won't look at you, because you are right behind them. You have to be.

a comprehensive list of every never before seen hadestown lyric revealed in “working on a song”
Note: This list will not include any lyrics from the OBCR, Broadway previews documented in audios, the London run, the Edmonton run, or the NYTW run. Only lyrics that Anaïs has never revealed before. Also, I strongly recommend everyone actually read the book and support Anaïs! It has amazing insights into the show we love.
(Also, any ellipses mean the song just goes into the lyrics we already know)
Wedding Song
In early Vermont productions, Wedding Song did not exist; there was another duet called Everything Written.
Fates: Seven Sisters / Little Dipper / Great Bear, Hunter / Drinking Gourd / Libra, Leo / Pisces, Pluto / Venus, Virgo / Capricorn
Eurydice: Don’t it make, don’t it make you feel so small? / Orpheus, when you look up at it all? / When I look into the skies / I lose my head for scale and size / And still you’re larger in my eyes / Than any star / You pull on me like gravity / I want to be where you are
They say that everything is written / Everything written in those stars / The very lives we’re living / The very love in our hearts
Orpheus: Who could write, who could write this kind if love? / From such a height, all these light-years up above? / And all these light-years down below / I don’t need any star to show me / What my heart already knows / Eurydice / You pull on me like gravity / I want to be where you are
Eurydice: Come here
Orpheus: I’m here
Eurydice: It’s so cold
Orpheus: So clear
Eurydice: It’s so dark
Orpheus: So fair
Eurydice: Come near
Orpheus: I’m here
Eurydice: You’re there
A workshop version of Wedding Song included this exchange:
Eurydice: You have a way with words don’t you? It’s too bad none of them are true
Orpheus: It’s not a lie- It’s poetry
Eurydice: How many mouths does a poem feed?
Epic I
From 2007 Vermont:
Orpheus: King of diamonds, king of spades! / First there was Hades, king of the dirt / Miners of mines, diggers of graves / They bowed down to Hades who gave them work /  And they bowed down to Hades who made them sweat / Who paid them their wages and set them about / Digging and dredging and dragging the depths / Of the Earth to turn its insides out / Singing la la la la la la la...
Then came Persephone, Hades’s wife / Our Lady of Shadows and Meadows entwined / Made to spend half of the days of her life / Right alongside of him down in the mine / But the other half she could walk in the sun / And the sun in turn burned half as bright / Which is where the seasons come from / And with them the cycle / Of the seed and the sickle / And the lives of the people / And the birds in their flight / Singing la la la la la la la...
So it was and it might have stayed / And the sun came up and the sun went down / A circle of fourths, a perfect cadence / The serpent’s tail in the serpent’s mouth / But the strong will take what they want to take / And the weak can only tell the tale / And the king began to lay his heavy hand upon the scale / What did he want? He wanted Our Lady / To have and to hold, not half, but wholly / To love him and never to leave him again / And as for the seasons, to hell with them! / And the earth warmed over in the dead of winter / The stillborn spring lay cold beneath /  Summer gave a stormy sermon / Autumn walked in the wake with a wreath / And the people moved like weather patterns / Looking for shelter, looking for warmth / Helter-skelter the four winds scattered / The scavengers over the ravaged earth / Singing la la la la la la la...
From a workshop, presumably pre-London:
Hermes: Orpheus was a poor boy / But he had a gift to give / There was one song he’d been working on / He could never seem to finish / A song about this broken world / That he rewrote again and again / As though if he could find the words / He could fix the world with them
Livin’ It Up On Top
From pre-NYTW workshops:
Persephone: A hundred sunny summer days / Till my lover comes to find me / A hundred blooming olive trees / And a hundred grapevines climbing / Singing songs when the sun goes down / Light the fire in the darkness / Brother, pass that bottle around / And we’ll raise a glass to the harvest, it’s / Just enough fruit for the pressing / Just enough wine to fill our cups / But what we have is a blessing / It isn’t much but it’s enough
Eurydice: A hundred starry summer nights / Since my lover came and found me / Picking fruit and hopping freights / With his music all around me / Stay up late making love / All the stars are naked / Talking sweet and sleeping rough / Our bed is where we make it, there’s / Just enough fruit for the pressing...
Way Down Hadestown
From when Anaïs was 21, long before the show was even a concept:
Follow that dollar for a long way down / Far away from the poorhouse door / You either get to hell or a border town / Ain’t no difference anymore...
Suckin’ on the gristle and chewin’ on the bone / Thinkin’ ‘bout missiles and the old Dow Jones / All alone on your chromium throne /And lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely...
From 2006:
Persephone: Though I’m happy at his side / He’s not an easy man to love / I used to keep him satisfied / But lately he can’t get enough / Never enough of the mine and the mill / Never enough of his working girls / Never enough of the wall he’s building / All around the underworld / Way down Hadestown...
Orpheus: Mr. Hades is slick as an eel / Fountain pen, crocodile shoes / Quick as a snake, and he’s hot on your heels / He’ll make you an offer that you can’t refuse! / Way down Hadestown...
Hermes: Speak of the devil and the devil comes / Here comes Mister Hades now / To gather up his chosen ones / And bring ‘em down to Hadestown / Way down Hadestown...
From 2007:
Hermes: Make room, make room for Hermes, sir! / Make a little room for Hermes, ma’am / They call me a messenger / But that ain’t half of who I am
I’m a man of influence / I’m connected up and down / And  I got all the documents / You need to get to Hadestown / Way down Hadestown...
Tired of walking in your worn-out shoes? / Tired of running on nothing at all? / Tired of standing your bets to lose? / Tired of losing? Give me a call, we’ll go... / Way down Hadestown...
Orpheus: Mister Hades got an iron fist / Step outta line and he’ll have your head / In the blink of an eye, with a flick of the wrist
Hermes: Hang around here and starve instead!
Orpheus: It’s a cattle pen!
Hermes: It’s a feeding trough!
Orpheus: He’ll fatten you up just to cut you down! / I’d rather starve
Hermes: I’d rather stuff my pockets down in Hadestown! / Way down Hadestown...
Hey, Little Songbird
Anaïs says she tried out this line in 2017 to include a more explicit “job offer” in the wake of the MeToo movement:
Hades: Hey, little songbird, gimme a song / I’m a busy man, and I can’t stay long / I’ve got clients to call, I’ve got orders to fill / I’ve got millions of souls on my payroll, but hell / I could fit you as well if you wanted
When the Chips are Down
From Vermont, 2006:
Fates: Cross my palm! Grease my chin / Can’t you see the kind of shape you’re in? / What you gonna do... ?
Wait For Me
From Vermont, 2007:
(These exchanges intercut the chorus)
Hades: Hermes! / Hermes: Hades! / Hades: Back in town! / Please, sit down / Please, relax / You’ve been around the world and back / Haven’t you, Hermes? / Hermes: I have / Hades: How’s the weather? / Hermes: Worse than ever / How’s your wife? / Hades: My wife is fine / Hermes: You’ve been spending a lot of time together / Haven’t you, Hades?
Hades: What have you brought? / Hermes: The latest crop / Hades: The freshest cut? / Hermes: A cut above / Hades: How many of them, a lot? / Hermes: A lot / Hades: A few too many perhaps / What’s this? / Why have you brought me Orpheus? / I know I never ordered that / It seems you’ve gone behind my back / Haven’t you, Hermes?
Hades: What was that? / Hermes: What was what? / Hades: I heard a voice / Hermes: I heard it not / Hades: Someone singing / Hermes: I heard nothing / Hades: Some kind of song / Hermes: You could be wrong / It could have been the wind / Hades: The wind? / Hermes: It could have been the rain / Hades: The rain? / Hermes: It could have been the train... (the train / the train / the train / the train...)
From “an early cutting room floor version”:
Fates: One (one, one) / You forget the sun
Eurydice: I forget the sun
Fates: You forget where you come from / You forget the sun
Eurydice: I forget the sun
Fates: Two (two, two)
Why We Build the Wall
Pre-NYTW:
Hermes: A lot can happen behind closed doors / With the big boss and his fountain pen / A lot of dirty deals go down / When there ain’t nobody watching...
Our Lady of the Underground
The 2006 version of the song was called “A Crack in the Wall” and these were the lyrics:
Persephone: Come and see the stars! / They’re fixin to fall / Slidin’ and a-slipping’ / In their gravity shoes / Old Man Mars / Taking Venus to the ball / Big dipper dippin’ / To the blue-sky blues
Have you forgot? / Which was is up? / I think you’ll find / I have just the thing for you / Put a quarter in the slot / You can fill your loving cup / With a little bit of moonshine / From the pay-per-view
How selfless! / The silent moon / Holding a mirror / For an ungrateful sun / Hey, Orpheus! / Are you leaving so soon? / Every night around here / Is a fateful one
Maybe you got blindsided / Lost your papers! / Lost your mind! / Maybe you once lost an angel / Just to watch her fall / Look a little closer and / The water turns to wine / Look a little closer: there’s a crack in the wall!
So I raise my cup / To the stars in the sky / If you want a show / Go on, get in line / Step right up brothers / Don’t be shy / What the boss don’t know / The boss won’t mind
Way Down Hadestown (Reprise)
A 2013 version of this song was called “No One Now,” delivered to Orpheus, and these are the lyrics:
Fates: Used to be a blushing bride / That was on the other side / Better to forget her face / Now she’s like the rest of us / One more number in a crowd / Maybe she was someone once / She ain’t no one now
Used to be a loving wife / That was in another life / Carve it on a marble stone / Now she’s like the rest of us / One more body in the ground / Maybe she was someone once / She ain’t no one now
Brother don’t you think we all / Used to have a name to call? / A tale to tell as well as her? / Now she’s like the rest of us...
Maybe when she first arrived / So alive, so naive / All the bright lights in her eyes / All her insides fluttering (alt. Heart aflutter on her sleeve) / Maybe she was someone then / Back when Hades drew her in / Like a moth into his flame / Borne aloft on burning wings / Well she ain’t the first and she ain’t the last / Hades’ fire is hot and fast / Just ask all the other girls / Sweeping up the ashes in the underworld / See even when the flame is new / She doesn’t hold a candle to / The woman Hades truly loves / So maybe she was someone once / But now she’s like the rest of us / All used up, all burned out / Maybe she was someone once / She ain’t no one now
From the Dartmouth workshop:
Hermes (to Orpheus): If you wanna get around down here in the tank / Down here in the clink / Down here in the hole / You got to think the way they think / Which is to say, your mind is blank / Which is to say, don’t think at all / Come / I’ll show you how it’s done
Welcome to the skeleton crew! / Welcome to the chain gang, kid / Lemme introduce you to / The members of the working dead / Old Jack Hammer! / Mister Miner / Wandering forever in the catacombs / Working on a hole to China / Diggin’ up them dino bones / Way down...
Sweatshop Sally! Missus Miller! / Workin’ in the cellar where the sun don’t shine / Sad eyed little Cinderella / Sweeping up the ashes of the summertime / Used to be one a the boss’s pets / Now she’s just another stiff / One night in the boss’s bed / And a lifetime on the graveyard shift / Way down...
Flowers
Did not exist in Vermont, but there was a brief reprise of “Everything Written”:
Eurydice: If it’s me- if it’s me you’re looking for / Orpheus, I can’t be with you anymore
Fates: She signed in blood / She signed for good
Eurydice: I signed before I understood / And I’d unsign it if I could / But it’s too late / They say that everything is written / Everything is written in those stars / Even these lives we’re living / Even this love
Fates: Seven sisters...
Papers
Pre-NYTW:
Hades: Let me see your papers, son / Let me see your documents / Or could it be that you have none? / You’re on the wrong side of the fence...
If It’s True
Pre-concept album:
Orpheus: If it’s true what they say / If there’s nothing to be done / If there’s no part left to play / If there’s no song to be sung / If it’s true what they say / If there’s no stone left to turn / If there’s no prayer left to pray / If there’s no bridge left to burn / If it’s true what they say / I’ll be on my way / If it’s true what they say / Then I have lived a lie / They can take the sky away / Take the stars out of my eyes / And my face will be a mask / And my heart will be a stone / And I’ll throw away the past / And I’ll go away alone...
How Long?
Pre-concept album:
Persephone (to Hermes): Brother Hermes, god of speed / Put your feathers on his feet / Hasten his delivery / Keep him hale and whole / Brother, I’m a jaded woman / But there’s something in his singing / And it feels like spring a-comin’ / To the winter of my soul
Brother Hermes, god of speed / Put your feathers on his feet / Hasten his delivery / Keep him safe and sound / He reminds me of the lover / That I was when I was younger / Back before my heart went under / Undercover / Underground
Chant (Reprise)
Dartmouth Workshop, 2014:
Hades: And in this symphony of mine / Are power chords and power lines / Which I arrange and orchestrate / And every day I dedicate / The magnum opus of my life / To my unkind, ungrateful wife / Persephone, and she shall see / Her name in lights on my marquee / And every night, another show / My symphony will never close! / And she shall have a front row seat / Which she shall never, ever leave! / Young man, you can strum your lyre...
Epic III
Vermont:
Orpheus: The strong will take what they want to take / And the weak can only tell the tale / And the heart of the king loves everything / Like the hammer loves the nail
The heart of the king is iron and steel / The heart of the king is the color of rust / The heart of the king is soldered and sealed / The heart of the king is a tinderbox / That he has to keep under lock and key / That it not catch fire inside his chest / Cos a lover’s desire is a mutiny / A lover’s desire is a wilderness
But even that hardest of hearts unhardened...
(I just have to say I fucking love this imagery of a fire oh my god)
Lover’s Desire
Anaïs once set the original Lover’s Desire melody to lyrics around the area of Wedding Song:
Orpheus: Lover, can you hear me? / I’m asking for your hand / Your hand for better or for worse / Forever / Whether you’re sick or well / For rich or poorer, to have and to hold for as / Long as we both shall live
Eurydice: Lover, can you hear me? / I’m asking for a hand / A hand that’s steady and strong / To lean on / To catch me if I fall / That’s the hand that I’ll have and I’ll hold for as / Long as we both shall live
Word to the Wise
Early workshops:
Fates: Hey / Hey / Hey / It’s judgement day! / Are you gonna let ‘em just walk away? / What you gonna do... ?
Wait For Me (Reprise)
Vermont:
Hades: Hermes!
Hermes: Hades!
Hades: Time to go / Time to bring this to a close / Time to lay this thing to rest
Hermes: Orpheus?
Hades: Orpheus / It’s all agreed / We’ve struck a deal / He’s free
Hermes: He’s free?
Hades: He’s free to walk
Hermes: And she?
Hades: To follow at his heel / And she, to follow at his back
Eurydice: Wait for me, I’m coming...
Hades: And she shall follow at his back / And she shall follow in his wake
Hermes: And what’s the catch?
Hades: The catch is this: / He shall not turn to see her face / And if he turns, the game is up / The deal is off, his race is run / And that’s the end of Orpheus / You’ll see it done?
Eurydice: Wait for me, I’m coming...
Written at an unspecified time but never used:
Hermes: A poor boy and a hungry young girl / Walking single file / While the music played / Brother, they looked for all the world / Like they was walking down the aisle / On their wedding day
We Raise Our Cups
The show once ended with an alternate song called “Cloud Machine” in Vermont, the lyrics of which Anaïs says she is embarrassed by:
Orpheus: What have I done? Mother, what have I done? / Squandered the gift that you gave me / Gambled with Hades and Hades won / And there’s no song now that can save me
Mother, I failed! Oh Mother, I tried / And I fell like a fool would fall / And I left my love / On the other side / On the other side of the wall
(Alt. There’s a crack in the wall / It’s a little bit wider / It’s a little bit wider, that’s all)
Persephone: Come, my son, don’t take it so hard / Everything is forgiven / You have done naught / But to play out the part / That the Fates in their wisdom have written
Orpheus: Raise up the curtain! The crowd goes wild! / The Fates are drunken clowns / All of us dreamers are walking the wire / While they juggle our dream around
Apollo, come down in your cloud machine / Apollo, come swallowing fire / With your thunder and lightning and kerosene / For the Fates and their funeral pyre
Persephone: Come, my son, we try and we fail / Every tail has an end
But the pale dawn breaks / And the snake eats it’s tail / And the tale begins again...

If it’s in a word or it’s in a look, you can’t get rid of the Babadook. He turns the page, ignoring the pressure building beneath his chest. eurydice
juyeon x reader - retelling of orpheus and eurydice, steampunk au - warnings: mentions of death - wc. 3.4k - a/n: originally posted for another group but yolo
--
juyeon hadn’t expected the underworld to be this quiet. although, when he thinks about it, he isn’t sure what he did expect. there’s an eerie stillness in the silent air that drips down his torso and dangles by his feet begging him to stay. be weary of the underworld the guide had warned him it lives to tempt fools like you.
‘fool’ was the word the guide had used. juyeon had denied it in the moment. “love,” he said to the guide, with a determined set to his jaw, “i’m doing this for love.” but now as he wanders the silent darkness and unnatural heat of the underworld with only a lantern to light his passage, he thinks that perhaps the guide wasn’t too far off. for his love made him foolish enough to make a deal with a demon and travel the underworld all in search of you.
“you came.” you say to him once he finds you with a voice so quiet it almost gets lost before it reaches his ears. you don’t look shocked to see him. you don’t even look happy. in fact, you barely look like you. juyeon doesn’t recognize the hollowed shape of your face and the dull line your lips make. he found your body in the darkness, but for a moment, juyeon can’t be positive he found you with it.
“of course,” he gulps, and you don’t make any indication that you’ve even heard him speak. he swallows again and shifts the lantern to his other hand, bouncing slightly on his heels. he fights the urge to shove his fists into pockets, and another, more prominent urge to turn around and run straight for the sun. “you waited.”
“well, yeah,” you shrug, “what else is a dead person supposed to do?”
--
juyeon remembers the day you died. remembers it too well, almost. he remembers the ringing in his ears and a hollowness inside his chest. he remembers the way he couldn’t cry. the way he couldn’t feel sad. he remembers hearing that you had died and thinking there was no way in hell he’d let it stay like that. juyeon knew, from the moment he heard, that he’d come and find you.
juyeon hasn’t cried. but right now, staring at the face of someone who’s been dead for too long, he feels like he just might.
--
“you made a deal with a demon.” you repeat, voice still void of anything sounding remotely like you.
“yeah.” he says, picking at a spot below his chin, faking nonchalance in the same way he would’ve when he first met you. the same nonchalance that you used to poke his side and tease him for. but when he does it right now, you barely seem to register the words let alone the tone of them. “for you. i made a deal for you.”
you nod. “what is it?”
“you get to come with me back to the real world...”
“...but?”
“but you have to walk behind me the entire time. and I can’t look back. not once, not until we’re back up above.”
“and what happens if you do?”
“you die.” he waits a beat. “again.”
you utter something incomprehensible, a small croak that sounds faintly like a scoff. “kind of like eurydice.”
juyeon leans forward. “what?”
you meet his eyes suddenly, as if only now realizing he’s been next to you this entire time. you blink. “nevermind.”
you don’t make a sound after that, don’t even move a muscle. juyeon didn’t expect you to be elated, but he did expect you to at least be surprised. and your lack of shock, your lack of… you, creates a knee-deep river of doubt in his mind. “you don’t have to come with me.” he says with what he hopes is reassurance. “i didn’t come here to force you back. i came here to ask.”
and the silence that comes after he says it stretches into eternity. an infinite eternity that ends the second your mouth twitches, just barely, into what juyeon swears is a smile. “you came.”
he inhales, and the air tastes faintly like hope. “i couldn’t let you go.”
“okay.” you accept, fiddling with something juyeon can’t make out in your hand. and the admission, makes him release a breath he hadn’t realized he was holding. juyeon knew coming down here was a shot in the dark. literally. his friends had made sure he knew. even the guide had made it clear: sometimes the dead don’t want to return. so, yeah, juyeon knew there was no guarantee you’d want to follow him back to the real world and no guarantee you’d agree to the demon’s terms. but all that doubt, all those voices telling him no seem so insignificant when he hears you say: “i’ll come with you.”
you meet his eyes again, and this time they look a little more like yours.
--
throughout his relationship with you, juyeon grew fond of the way you cracked your knuckles and joints. it’s stress relief you’d tell him popping your neck for the fifth time that morning. he’d found it odd at first, concerning even. but now days, juyeon can’t seem to find the way you crack your back every time you get up as anything but endearing.
even now, as you sit on the tattered, green couch you bought off the old apothecary owner, juyeon feels nothing more than a small pang of affection for the way you crack your knuckles while reading a book.
“hey,” juyeon begins, sitting next to you on the couch, “eric gave this to me today.”
he hands you the folded ad for a ticket to center circle. the once-in-a-lifetime tickets that were only offered once every few years.
you study the ad for a while, running your finger against the crease in the paper. juyeon shifts uncomfortably in his seat while you do.
“i don’t want it,” you shrug, folding the paper back up and tossing it on the coffee table.
“but,” juyeon refutes, eyes trained on the discarded paper and brows furrowed, “it’s your dream.”
“you dummy,” you tease with a numbingly sweet smile. and for a moment, you don’t say anything else. instead you capture his hand and pull on each of his fingers, cracking his knuckles like you do with yours. and it’s while staring at his hands that you mutter, “dreams change, you know.”
--
the walk to the real world begins quietly.
“do you remember the myth of orpheus and eurydice?” you say from somewhere behind juyeon, voice quiet and yet far. and yes, it must be far because the words sound like they’ve been echoing off the rocks and stones for years.
“remind me.”
“from what i can remember, they were in love.” you wait a moment, and juyeon could bet that if he turned around right now, he’d find you somewhere far behind him, cracking your knuckles. “and when eurydice died, orpheus convinced hades to let her go on the same terms as your deal with the demon. or something like that.”
“i see,” juyeon whispers. “so what happened when they made it back to earth?”
“that’s the thing,” you say, this time nearly yelling the words, “they didn’t. orpheus looked back at the last second.”
juyeon stops walking. “well, that’s not going to be us.”
he hears you sigh. “i know.”
juyeon starts walking again, holding up the lantern that emits just enough light to see his feet and nothing else. “so why’d he look back?”
“i don’t think the myth really says. some say he got impatient. others say orpheus began to doubt that eurydice was actually behind him and then also doubt that hades would ever let her go. but I think they’re all wrong. maybe he looked back because eurydice asked him to.”
the implication makes juyeon gulp. “why would she do that?”
you don’t answer the question. “why do you think orpheus turned?”
“i don’t know.”
“turn around and you will.”
“that’s not funny.”
quietly, you say: “it wasn’t a joke.”
juyeon pretends to not hear.
--
when juyeon realized he loved you, it wasn’t something big or spectacular. it wasn’t a tidal wave of emotion that crashed and dragged him below the tide. rather, it was a small wave of adoration that lapped by his feet, a cool and calm sensation that made him want to dig his heels in the sand and wade further into the water.
when juyeon realizes he loves you, you’re sitting on his kitchen counter, complaining about work.
“i love you.” he admits, walking towards where you sit. he doesn’t miss the way you still and the way you refuse to look anywhere but at your own hands. and juyeon knows it’s too soon, too fast. it’s only been two months since he’s known you. one month since you started dating. he knows it’s too soon to have fallen in love. but that doesn’t really change the fact that he has. he repeats it, feeling a deep need to cement this moment further into his memory and another to memorize the image of you sitting on his kitchen counter smiling at your hands.
“you don’t have to say it back or anything,” he tells you, wrapping his arms around your waist, “i  didn’t say it so that you would-” silently, you cut him off, leaning forward until your forehead is pressed against his. “i just wanted you to know cause i do,” he continues softly, “i love you.”
your eyes flit up to his, lashes brushing against his brow bone. “i know.” it’s then that you take his face between his palms and press your lips to his.
it’s three weeks after that moment in his kitchen, that you return the statement, although you don’t return it with the words themself.
he meets you on one of the benches outside the warehouse after work. when you see him approaching, something seems to visibly soften throughout your entire body. you pull him down to sit next to you on the bench, wrap your arms around his torso under his heavy coat, and bury your face into the space between his shoulder and his chest.
juyeon places a kiss on your temple. “you okay?”
“i had the worst day at the plant.” you mumble into his coat.
“do you wanna talk about it?”
“no,” you hesitate as if deciding what it is that you do want. after a moment you answer: “i just want you near.”
--
“do you feel that?” juyeon hears you ask.
“feel what?”
“the rain?”
he holds out his palm and stares at the darkness above. how could it possibly rain in a place like this, juyeon wonders to himself.
“no.” he finally answers. “i don’t feel anything.”
“it’s pouring!” he can’t tell. he doesn’t hear the rain, doesn’t hear the thunder you claim to have heard. but he hears your voice, and it sounds warbled as if coming from behind curtains and curtains of pounding rain. he can tell you’re yelling to be heard over it. “you still don’t feel it?”
“no!” he yells back.
“i’m tired.”
“we’re almost there.” he says to the darkness that stretches before him, praying that it bounces off the emptiness of this world and finds you. “we just have to make it through the night.”
“no, juyeon, i’m tired.” you repeat frustrated. and with the way you say it, juyeon isn’t sure what exactly you’re tired of.
“do you remember your first storm in ironport?” he asks, a desperate attempt to take your mind off the current storm, and another, more hopeless effort to make you miss home.
“yeah,” you murmur, voice no longer a desperate yell. and yet somehow, juyeon hears you better now than he did before. “of course i remember.”
--
the day of your first ironport strom is also the day you kiss juyeon.
in all transparency, juyeon hadn’t noticed the dark clouds gathering above and the distant rumbling coming from the farmlands in the west. he’d been too distracted with watching you nod off during the trolley ride back from the warehouse, too distracted trying to make sure your head stayed perfectly balanced on his shoulder.
but by the time the trolley does squeak and stutter to your stop, it’s pouring. you slowly get up and hover by the exit, rubbing the sleep from your eyes. “i bet you hadn’t insisted on taking me home now.” you say between a yawn.
juyeon shakes his head and joins you by the exit, wearing a smile that feels too bright against the weather outside. “make a run for it?” he suggests.
you scrunch your nose and crack your knuckles. “yeah, okay.” you find his hand, and fit it against your own. “ready?”
juyeon swallows the fluttering in his stomach. “ready.”
despite the running and shocked yelps, you’re drenched before you even make it to the end of the street. and it’s sometime after the second turn that you both give up entirely, jumping into puddles at the corner of rosebud and kicking water at each other.
“look,” you exclaim, pointing at the sky, “there’s a break in the clouds.” juyeon looks up at where you point. ironport is known for its ferocious storms with dark grey and angry clouds that tumble across the sky and linger there for days on end. juyeon, living in ironport his whole life, has seen his fair share of the town’s storms, but this, juyeon has never seen. over the farmlands, the clouds part across the sky and a golden light comes pouring over the grassy hills. your voice comes out low. “it’s beautiful isn’t it?”
his eyes land on you. “yeah, it is.”
and juyeon’s so lost, mindlessly staring at you that he almost doesn’t register the way you stare back at him with a lopsided smile, grab his color, and pull him towards you until his lips meet yours.
almost.
--
“still raining?” juyeon asks, just to check if you’re still behind.
“yeah.”
“you must be drenched.”
“i am.” you pause. “and cold.” it must be a test, juyeon thinks. or a trial of some sort, because how is he supposed to not turn around right at this moment and give you something to make you warm.
after some time, you ask: “how do you know you’ve made a mistake?”
he tilts his head at the question. it’s an odd question, yes. but something to pass the time he assumes. “you know the sensation you get on the air lift right before the drop by the watchtower.” he waits for some affirmation that you’ve heard. it never comes. “it feels like that for me. like a rock in my gut. i know i’ve made a mistake because i feel the wrongness of it.”
you let out a small cough. “do you feel that right now?”
“no.” something akin to fear settles underneath his tongue. “do you?”
--
when eric asks if you and juyeon are friends, juyeon doesn’t think to mention the way you two have been hanging out at the warehouse every day after work or how much he enjoys talking with you. it doesn’t phase juyeon to describe the lack of air in his lungs each time you’re so much as mentioned or the smile that appears whenever you’re near. instead, he shrugs, and says, “yeah, i guess we’ve gotten close.”
--
“it stopped raining,” you murmur softly, sounding close. so close juyeon thinks he can smell the rainwater dripping from your clothes and hear your arms flailing in the darkness. it takes a moment for him to realize, you actually are.
“when did you get so close?”
“oh, juyeon,” you smile, or at least he imagines you do, “i’ve never been far.”
--
the second time juyeon sees you is not a coincidence. he’s been spending every evening at the warehouse since your first conversation together, hoping at some point you’ll walk in with the other plant workers. until finally one night you do.
“small world.” he begins, meeting you at the bar.
“yeah,” you reply, and a sudden warmth fills juyeon when you purse your lips, as if there’s a private joke waiting on your tongue, “we’re all closer than we assume.”
--
the first thing juyeon thinks when a sort of warmth fills his body, is that there’s a fire growing in the dark abyss that is the road between the underworld and the real one.
it’s only when he hears you say, “juyeon is that the…?” does he realize that the warmth lingering in his fingertips is from the sun. the world around him is still entirely dark, the only light being from the lantern still. but before juyeon sees the light of the sun, he can feel the sunlight and taste it on his tongue.
“it’s almost over,” he says to the new warmth in his knees and to you who’s now so close behind him.
you don’t respond. and some small part of juyeon that’s buried under oceans of grief and love, knows what the silence means. a miniscule, almost negligible, part of juyeon knows how to interpret your lack of response.
but the larger, more intruding part of juyeon that can’t bear the idea of letting you go, selfishly asks, “what about your dream? what about center circle?”
you sigh, and it’s the first sound you’ve made since noticing the sun. “oh juyeon, i stopped caring about center circle the day i met you.”
--
the first time juyeon sees you is at the warehouse. and as soon as you enter with the other plant workers, juyeon knows you’re new. he can tell by the way you talk, with an accent that sounds too western to be from around here, and from the way your face is the only one he doesn’t know. curiosity is what he tells himself and eric when asked later that week. juyeon approaches you at the warehouse bar because he’s curious. although, curiosity doesn’t begin to explain the churning in his gut and the chill running down his spine as he does.
“hey,” he greets, resting his elbows against the bar. “i’m juyeon.”
you study him before answering, as if determining whether you should even bother with giving him your name. lucky for him, you do.
“you new around here?” he asks, despite knowing you are. the polite thing to do, he figures.
“what gave me away?” you snort.
“ironport’s a small town.” he shrugs, with a degree of nonchalance that doesn’t at all match the current pace of his heart. “the people that are born here tend to die here as well.”
“not me.” you mutter, shaking your head. “i’m certainly not dying in ironport.”
juyeon seats himself on the barstool next to you. “is there a preferred place of death then?”
“center circle.” you tell him, as the barkeep slides you your drink. “it’s been my dream since forever. i’ve worked my way up from the wallows. if i die before getting to the center circle, i’ll walk there from hell myself.”
“that’s insane.” he responds half-teasing, half-not.
you take a long sip from your drink. “i know.”
“and yet?”
you meet his eyes steadily. “and yet i can’t let it go.”
at the bottom of his gut juyeon again feels curiosity tug.
--
“juyeon,” you breathe, so close he can feel it on his shoulder. “come back to me.” he doesn’t respond, acts like he doesn’t even hear the words. instead, he steps forward, feels the warmth of the sun on his cheek, and then sinks back into the cool sensation of your forehead knocking against his neck.
“come back to me, okay?” you repeat into his back. “but don’t come back too soon.”
“and you’ll wait for me?” he asks, yearning for nothing more than to turn around and kiss your eyelids and nose and cheeks and lips. wanting nothing more than to turn around and memorize your face in all the ways he forgot to do while you were alive and on earth.
“well yeah,” you smile against his shirt, “what else is a dead person supposed to do?”
and for a small second, relishing in the sensation of your chest shaking with laughter against his back, juyeon feels at peace.
“so have you figured it out yet?” you start, lifting your chin from his shoulder, and interlocking your fingers with his. “have you figured out why orpheus turned?”
“no.” he returns, with a squeeze.
“but i guess i’m about to find out.”

Greek Mythology and Julie & the Phantoms
My first watch through of Julie and the Phantoms (JATP), I noticed a few similarities and parallels to certain myths within Greek mythology. On my million rewatches, I paid more attention to see if there were others. This post is all my observations of the parallels, as well as a few possible theories for season 2 the writers could follow for certain storylines. This is a ridiculously long read, I apologize.
**Disclaimers:
There are spoilers, so if you haven’t finished watching for the first time yet, don’t read this.
The content in Greek myths can vary depending on the source. This is largely due to the fact they are just super old. So some of the myths might be slightly different. I did my best just to compare to the gist of the myth.
I’m going to refer to Luke, Reggie, and Alex together as either Sunset Curve or the boys to save space.
I apologize for any typos and mistakes; midterm season has left me with an empty head.
1. Orpheus
Obviously a major motif in the first season is the Orpheum. Orpheum literally means House of Orpheus.
Background information of Orpheus:
His mother is Calliope (muse of epic poetry), and depending on the version of the story, his father is either Apollo (god of the sun, healing, music, medicine, archery, and poetry) or King Oeagrus of Thrace.
Orpheus was considered to be one of the greatest musicians. He had a “divinely gifted voice that could charm anyone who heard it,” no god or mortal could resist his music.
Let’s look at some of his myths.
Orpheus and Eurydice:
The basic summary of this myth is that Eurydice, Orpheus’ wife, died after being bitten by snakes while running away from a man, Aristaeus, or a satyr (depends on source) who wanted her for himself. Devastated, Orpheus began singing sad songs until he was advised by nymphs to go to the Underworld and bring her back. After singing to Hades and Persephone, they agreed to let Eurydice return to the main world. However, they warned him not to look back before they both entered the light of the surface. He happily began his trek back to the surface. When Orpheus reached the exit, Eurydice in toe, he turned around to see her, anxious to make sure it wasn’t a trick, that she was really there. Only, Eurydice was still in the Underworld, she hadn’t crossed over yet. Orpheus turning around when he did, caused Eurydice to remain in the underworld.
So who’s who?
Julie = Orpheus (talented musician and desperate to save their love from the Underworld)
Sunset Curve = Eurydice (dead and trapped)
Caleb = Aristaeus and Hades (wants Eurydice/Sunset Curve for himself; controls the place the dead are)
Hollywood Ghost Club (HGC) = The Underworld
How do they relate? Stand Tall (s1e09) is where it all goes down.
Like Aristaeus, Caleb is pursing Sunset Curve because he wants them for himself (and Caleb is also threaten by the power they have).
Caleb has the boys trapped in the HGC, just like Eurydice in the Underworld.
Julie had to deal with the idea the boys died (again) when they didn’t show up before the performance. At first she couldn’t, she ran out until she had a sign from her mom, telling her to go on stage. You could argue this sort of parallels the nymphs telling Orpheus to plea to Hades, or that it parallels Orpheus on his journey back to the surface after Hades agreed.
This is where Julie and Orpheus differ. Julie goes onstage, fully believing in the sign from her mother; that even if the boys don’t come, she can do it. The lyrics of Stand Tall are pure genius. “Keep moving on, never look back.” That’s exactly what Julie does. Unlike Orpheus, Julie doesn’t look back. And the boys appear, no longer trapped by Caleb at the HGC. Julie breaks away from the Orpheus formula and wins.
@multifandomterrors wrote an essay on how it relates too! She has three theories of how it fits and I definitely recommend you check it out!
Bonus reasons Julie is Orpheus:
Orpheus joined Jason and the Argonauts. When the ship was approaching the Sirens, Orpheus saves the crew from death by playing his own music, drowning out the Sirens’ Song. Likewise, Julie is able to save the boys from Caleb. You can argue that her singing Stand Tall acted as a beacon, beckoning the boys away from Caleb and back to her, saving them in the process.
This one is more of a long shot but oh well. Orpheus is said to have a “divinely gifted voice that could charm anyone who heard it,” that no god or mortal could resist his music. The boys say that Julie has “the voice of an angel.” Throughout the season, as soon as Julie starts to sing, people are generally drawn in, even Carrie by the end.
Onto the next parallel...
2. Lotus Eaters
As soon as the slightest idea of the boys missing the dance was hinted at I knew it was going to happen because ~formulas~, but once they got to the HGC, I had a strong feeling it was going to be a Lotus Eaters situation.
Summary of the Lotus Eaters:
In The Odyssey, Odysseus and his crew encounter the Lotus Eaters. They do as their name suggests, they eat the peculiar Lotus flower. When the lotus flower is eaten, those who eat it are “overcome with a blissful forgetfulness,” and want to do nothing more than stay where they are. The crew mates had to be dragged back to the ship, otherwise they never would have returned to their duties. The most well known adaptation of this is probably the Lotus Casino in Percy Jackson & the Olympians series, where the characters spend days/years there, only thinking it was a few hours/days. It’s a time warp per se.
So what’s what?
Hollywood Ghost Club =  Lair/island of the lotus eaters (everyone there appears to have no other worries in life)
The music & dancing = Lotus flower (sucks everyone in)
How do they relate?
Once Caleb starts performing, Sunset Curve are sucked in. Eventually, they are overcome with a “blissful forgetfulness” and forget about Julie and the dance. They only get sucked back out once Caleb mentions it’s the witching hour.
Alex literally says “This place is some sort of time warp.”
When the boys try to leave, the dancers and then Caleb try to reel them back in.
The next is not directly Greek mythology, but distantly related:
3. Disney’s Hercules
The story in Disney’s Hercules isn’t exactly what the myths of Heracles are. It’s Disney, so of course the stories are romanticized and changed significantly. First of all, in the original myths, Hercules is really named Heracles, and Megara is nothing more than Heracles’ wife that ends with a tragic story.
In the movie, Hades wants Hercules dead since he is the only one that can ruin his plan to take over the world. He enlists Megara (or Meg, whose soul he owns) to get to know him and find his weakness. As Meg gets to know Hercules, they fall in love. Hades uses this as Hercules’ weakness, and once he outs Meg for working for him, Hercules is emotionally defeated. However, he still gives up his power for 24 hours, as long as Meg remains untouched by harm. Of course that doesn’t happen, and Meg dies while saving Hercules. Her soul is returned to the Underworld, and Hercules journeys down there to save her, even though he might die doing so. Except he doesn’t; he saves Meg, and it’s happily ever after.
So who’s who?
Alex = Hercules
Willie = Meg
Caleb = Hades
How does it relate?
Like Hades wants Hercules dead, Caleb wants Alex (and the boys) under his control because they are too powerful. He’s threatened by them.
Even though Willie didn’t mean to bring the boys into the mess with Caleb, he still did (no hate, I love my son). Willie acts as Meg in this situation because Caleb still uses him to get to the boys. Caleb gets to put his stamp on them.
Willie, just like Meg, decides to not help Caleb anymore, though he’s still stuck. He cares about Alex, he doesn’t want him to be stuck at the HGC like him forever; he doesn’t want Caleb to own Alex’s soul. So, Willie helps Alex and the boys with their plan to crossover.
In Stand Tall, right before You’ve Got Nothing to Lose, Caleb appeals to each of the boys’ weakness. Caleb says “Everything you want, including Willie, is right here.” Just like Hades uses Meg against Hercules, Caleb uses Willie against Alex.
Potential Season 2 Willex Storyline
The parallel to Hercules and Meg isn’t finished. Alex hasn’t saved Willie from Caleb yet, and Caleb hasn’t been defeated yet. We don’t see Willie after the Willex hug in Stand Tall. I think it’s safe to assume that Willie is not safe from Caleb, especially since he helped Sunset Curve escape Caleb’s curse. There’s a lot of things that could happen. One of my assumptions is that Caleb is going to use Willie as bait to lure Alex back in. Another is that, like how Hercules goes to the Underworld to save Meg’s soul,  Alex is going to actively choose to return to the HGC to try to save Willie from Caleb.
And the last parallel to Greek mythology in season 1...
4. Cheyenne Jackson
He plays Hades in Descendants 3, a Disney movie, meaning he’s the same Hades as in Hercules.
Caleb Covington, you could argue is the “king of the dead” in JATP
That’s it, that’s the parallel.
Possible Season 2 Storylines
Cephalus and Procris (I’m not as familiar with this myth, but it basically goes like this)
Cephalus and Procris are happily married and very in love with each other. One day, the goddess of dawn, Eos, kidnaps Cephalus because she wants him to herself. Depending on the version you read, Cephalus either sleeps with Eos, or he doesn’t, but regardless, his only concern is how much he loves his wife, Procris. Eos finds that annoying, and plants the idea in his head that Procris is cheating on him when she releases him eight years later. Cephalus returns to Procris, disguised as another man, to see if she would remain faithful. A disguised Cephalus continuously brings Procris presents, and slowly, Procris is swayed by the mysterious man. When Cephalus reveals himself, Procris runs away, ashamed, and joins Artemis’ hunt. Eos wins essentially. She get’s Cephalus... until Procris returns, trying to make amends with her husband. He takes her back, but not long after Procris hears rumors that Cephalus has been unfaithful. She follows him on a hunt, hiding behind a bush. Cephalus hears a bush move, and thinking it’s an animal, he shoots, killing Procris. In the end, Eos still wins as Procris is no longer in the picture, and she could theoretically be with him. Expect Cephalus exiles himself and Eos is never seen again.
How could this apply to JATP season 2?
Julie = Procris
Luke = Cephalus
Caleb = Eos
Caleb-Possessed-Nick = Disguised man
Since Caleb possessed Nick at the end, I assume his plan is to get Julie to pick Nick, thus pushing Luke away from her. Caleb wants Luke and the boys to himself, and as long as Julie is in the picture, that won’t happen. As Caleb-Possessed-Nick tries to flirt and get closer to Julie, Luke will see this and get jealous. His jealousness could lead to tensions between Julie and Luke, making the band a bit awkward, maybe even a big fight that pushes Luke to think about joining Caleb, or at least isolating himself where Caleb would have easy access. I think it would be a very loosely applied parallel, but the idea of Caleb working to cause a rift between Luke and Julie to get Luke by himself is a major possibility. Regardless, Caleb-Possessed-Nick is going to get in the way of Luke and Julie’s slow burn pining for each other.
A General Thought Not Related to Greek Mythology
Regardless of what the writers end up doing, I think Caleb’s best plan would be to target the boys individually; like the continuance of the Hercules parallel with Willex and potential Cephalus & Procris parallel with Juke. I don’t know how he would isolate Reggie, maybe something with his family, but targeting the boys one-on-one would be the most strategic move for Caleb. He could even get super manipulative with it. He could say something like “Alex already agreed” or something along those lines to try to persuade the boy he is talking to.
Additionally, I don’t have any theories on where Carrie and Julie’s relationship may go, but i’m looking forward to a Carrie redemption arc. As far as where Bobby fits in, I read someone’s theory that Caleb may approach him, offering to help keep his reputation as Trevor Wilson, if he helps deal with the boys somehow. I’m sure there’s a potential greek myth that fits a potential Bobby and the boys storyline, but out of the ones I can think of right now, there aren’t. Betrayal is a huge theme in greek mythology though.
Anyway...
While the original target audience was kids and the show probably wasn’t meant to be this deep, as a screenwriter myself, I find it super useful (and fun) to parallel classic stories and myths when I write. It can add a sense of nuance to the story, especially when done right. I hope the writers (assuming at least the Orpheus and Lotus Eaters parallels were intentional) continue to parallel the season with some form of myth or classic story, only to then completely flip the ending.
If you actually took the time to read ALL of this, my god, I applaud you, you amazing human. Thank you so much for reading it. I’d love to hear what y’all think or what theories y’all have as well!

Theon Fic Appreciation || Bingo Square: Share a fic that brought you joy
All of these fics have brought me such joy! Even when they are portraying truly heartbreaking or angsty things. I am still so captivated by the amazing storytelling that it brings me such JOY to read them all. @theon-appreciation
Four Letter Word by Dresupi, @dresupi (Theonsa)
Theon is finished with his rehabilitation, but he still can't shake the feeling that he's dragging everyone down. Sansa answers his call, and he finds himself living with her. She's already done so much for him, how can he ask this from her as well? How long before he realizes that he's giving as much as he's getting?
I get so excited every time I see that this fic has updated! I just love the emotional honesty of it and how such beautiful meaning is found in the everyday between them. Also love the interactions with Arya and Yara! It’s a beautiful, humorous, hurt/ comfort fic and I can’t get enough of it!
Soul Marked by VagrantWriter, @megaunhappybunny (Multiple Ships)
The First Men called it "soul marked," but that knowledge has passed into myth, along with grumpkins and snarks. The blood of the First Men still runs through the North and the Iron Islands, though, and sometimes, if one knows what to look for, they can see the threads of Fate binding two souls together. Theon has five soulmates.
THIS. IS. BRILLIANT. I am absolutely amazed by ingenuous ways this fic brings the Soulmate AU into asoiaf canon! I love how Alannys is the one to tell Theon about his soulmate rings and the insight with which each one is explored.
The Lannister’s Hostages by kitkatkaylie (Theonsa)
It is a neat solution, Tywin Lannister thinks, to tie his two hostages together. A way to ensure his control of the Iron Islands and the North; to wed his Stark hostage to his cowed Greyjoy hostage.
I am loving this fic that explores what would have happened if Theon had been a hostage of Tywin Lannister instead of Ned Stark. The emotional world building here is fascinating and the Theonsa parts are beautifully imagined and so soft. So excited to see where this goes!
to fly upward by bubblewrapstargirl (Theonsa)
After Theon dies in 8x03, Sansa has one chance to bring him back; by venturing into the Underworld to try and retrieve his soul. If she succeeds, all his wounds and scars will be healed, and they can live the lives they should always have had... But would that life be together or apart?
This is a fascinating concept and I love the way that the author has combined the hells of Dante’s Inferno with asoiaf religious lore. There is only one chapter up so far but I am dying to read more!
When Your Soul Embarks by bluenebulae, @pseudonova (Theonsa)
Theon leaves this world with the last breath of the long night, but Sansa, not quite ready to let him go, follows him down where shadows reign as the war rages on, above and below. An Orpheus & Eurydice AU.
I am obsessed. This fic is so atmospheric and evocative and suspenseful. The world building of the asoiaf inspired underworld is stunning. It is also so incredibly heartbreaking but hopeful at the same time. It is only two more chapters away from being completed, so please read and leave lots of love, kudos and comments.
i’ll find a way to get back to your side by QueenWithABeeThrone (Throbb)
He dies on the Wall, in his sister’s arms, and the last thing he sees besides her face is Robb Stark smiling at him. Robb and Theon get a chance to make things right.
I have loved this Throbb reincarnation AU for years. It stays in present day New York, for the most part, weaving in and out of all the lives they have lead. But I love how all the timelines blend together in their heads. It’s so poignant and angsty and hopeful all at once.

https://therainbowwillow.tumblr.com/post/640094221880197120/therainbowwillow -Part 2
Well! Part 3/??? Here’s the premise: Hades’ terms for Orpheus leaving Hadestown are extremely harsh. Persephone threatens to leave him, and he’s forced to back down, leaving Orpheus with a single rule: he can’t sing until he’s out. He orders the residents of Hade to kill Orpheus, the only living mortal in the underworld. Eurydice, Persephone, and other mythological heroes join him on the journey to escape. Hermes gets word of his son’s trial and decides he’ll assist Orpheus. Dionysus joins him to visit Persephone (his mother, I’m using his Orphic parentage: Hades and Persephone) and Apollo comes, inspired by Orpheus’s attempt at freeing Eurydice, to find his lover, Hyacinthus.
TLDR Hadestown, but a different terms for our favorite singer and WAY more characters because why not.
Unrelated but my phone really wants to autocorrect “Orpheus” to “Orange,” which makes for a whole different story, honestly.
Anyway, here we go:
Eurydice lays beside her sleeping lover, staring up at the cracked ceiling of Persephone’s greenhouse. Burnt vines wrap the walls and climb towards the artificial lights of Hadestown. “Plants don’t grow towards neon the way they do the sun,” Persephone had said. “Not even when coerced by a goddess.” Still, the abandoned building provides decent shelter, which is far better than the rest of the underworld. Instead of trapping the heat, it seems to keep in the cold.
Eurydice glances at Orpheus. Even in the cool of the greenhouse, he sweats in his sleep. He’s exhausted and hungry, she knows, but they have no outside food. If he eats the food of Hadestown, she fears it’ll bind him to the damned place, just as the pomegranate seeds had bound Persephone.
Orpheus rolls over. He mumbles something incomprehensible. Eurydice keeps a closer eye on him. “Persephone?” she asks.
“Hm?” The goddess responds.
“What will Hades do if he catches us? I know the stories... Sisyphus, pushing his stone uphill forever. Tantalus, starved, with food just out of reach. Eternal torture. Is that what lays ahead?” Her voice doesn’t quiver. She finds she isn’t afraid of the answer, not after the mines. Hours and hours of her pickaxe against stone. And once she’d finished, she’d be building Hades’ wall or laying wires or partaking in some other pointless feat. Everyone in Hadestown feels like Sisyphus now.
“It’s best... it’s best if you don’t think about it.” Persephone sips from her canteen. Alcohol, certainly. Her voice has a drunken lisp to it.
“I want to know what’s at stake,” Eurydice says. Orpheus again tosses in his sleep.
“Eternal torture sums it up fine.”
“He’ll separate us, won’t he?”
Persephone shrugs. “Your contract will change. All of ours’ will. Probably a ban from speaking to each other.”
“What can he do to stop us?” Achilles mutters. “We’re dead already and he took our paridise. I can bear his whip, his mines. This whole place is torture.”
“Tell me about it.” Persephone rolls her eyes. “A goddess of spring, confined to... this.” She gestures around her.
“They say you loved him,” Eurydice says.
“Loved him. An emphasis on loved.” She takes another sip of her alcohol and slips off her wedding band. She flips it in the air and catches it. “I chose this. I chose Hades over light. Over life and clean air and springtime. I preferred Hades’ tyranny over Demeter’s. That dance... it almost felt like a fresh start. But what did I expect?” She takes a withered vine between her fingers. “This is futile. We should be planning. This place sucks the life out of everything it touches. Our poet included.”
Orpheus gasps. “Speaking of our poet, he’s awake!” She tilts her head. “You alright?” Eurydice asks.
Orpheus swallows. His eyes are wide and his breaths quick. He shakes his head. “No... no. You need to go. All of you.”
“Hey,” she rests her palm over his hands. “I’m not going anywhere. You need rest.”
He wipes his eyes. “You don’t understand. You don’t understand! Go. Please Eurydice. Please.”
“Shh... shh. You’re alright.”
He snatches his hand away. “No. I’m not. It’s... it’s too far. I’ll be... I’ll be dead by the time we reach the Styx.”
“Orpheus! Don’t talk like that. We’re gonna make it.”
“No, we aren’t. Hades is going to find me and he’ll kill me because I... I can’t do this. I can’t walk alone and I’m not allowed to sing and whatever he did to me...”
“Orpheus, look at me. You’re gonna be fine.”
“It’s not over, okay? I... I should’ve told you but...”
“What are you talking about, Orpheus? What is this?”
He sobs and sinks into her arms. “I feel worse. Eurydice, I’m getting worse,” he whispers.
“Once we’re out-“
“Once you’re out. Leave me here.”
“How can you say that? I’m not letting Hades have you!” Eurydice raises her voice.
“I came for you. And now... you’re dragging me out. I’m useless and I’m holding you back. Eurydice, I’d never forgive myself if you didn’t... if...”
“We’re going to get out of here.”
“Would you listen to me?” He yells. “We are not going to get out of here. Not so long as you’re carrying dead weight! I...” he tries to push himself upright but sinks back into Eurydice’s embrace. “I can’t sing. I can’t walk. I can’t even stand.”
She doesn’t respond. She just holds him, tight in her arms. “I don’t care,” she whispers. “I’ll carry you out of here if I have to. I love you and I’m never letting you go again. I promise.”
Orpheus says nothing. “Orpheus?”
She lifts him up and his chin falls against his chest. “Orpheus... no. No, you can’t do this to me.” She places a finger under his nose and feels his shallow breaths. She breathes a sigh of relief. “You’re alright. You’re alright.” She isn’t sure if she’s trying to convince herself or Orpheus, who cannot hear her. She lays his head back down on his coat, a makeshift pillow.
Patroclus kneels at her side. “Orpheus is right. He is getting worse.”
“What’s wrong with him?” She begs.
“I don’t know,” he admits. “He could be ill with some plague, but that’s Apollo’s domain, not Hades’s. Maybe he is only hungry or dehydrated. Regardless, he’s right that he won’t last forever down here. We should get moving.” Eurydice nods. “I wish I could be more help.”
“Someone’s here!” Achilles shouts. Patroclus leaps to his feet.
“Protect Orpheus,” he commands Eurydice and Persephone.
“If it’s my husband,” Persephone growls, “I’ll deal with him.”
Patroclus nods and returns to Achilles.
—————————————
Hades sits beside his office window. He’d given the orders in the morning: kill Orpheus. If the boy dies, his killer will not be asked to work for the rest of their time in the underworld. His plan would soon succeed. His shades would end the fool’s life and finally, finally, Hades would have his kingdom back. It had only been 48 hours or so since Orpheus’s failed serenade, but it had felt like an eternity.
Hades reaches for his wine glass. The portrait he’d torn from the wall catches his eye. Persephone, smiling, a babe at her knee. It had been a long while since he’d seen that child. Dionysus, god of wine and madness. He visited the underworld plenty, once or more every winter. Never the tower, though. He only knew the boy had come by because his wife would return, drunk out of her mind. He’d drag her to bed and every time, he’d bribe Hypnos to keep his dear Persephone asleep an extra few hours, to let her sleep off the hangover. Dionysus could wash away her intoxication with a wave of his hand. He used to. But for a long while now, she’d return drunk. Upon her request, Hades knew. He tried now not to feel the sting of this fact. His own wife would rather be blackout drunk than speak to him.
Still, he loves her. He’d laid a thousand miles of wires to brighten his kingdom, to mimic the sun she so loved. And she’d complained it was too bright. He’d let her have a wide stretch of land to attempt to grow a garden. He’d tended it with her, but still, the plants wilted. And now he had let Orpheus tear out his heart for Persephone. He’d done everything for her, nearly lost everything for her, and still, she hates him.
Hades lifts the painting from the ground and lays it across his desk. He sees his labors. To keep his hold on the underworld and his wife’s affection, if she has any left. He must prioritize his realm. He loves her, more than any kingdom, but the binds of death must not be unwound, Hades knows. The mortal realm his wife so loves would wither without death. It cannot be overrun by fleeing shades. His kingdom is his responsibility, and he must keep it in check. And so he tucks the painting into a drawer, gone from sight, gone from mind.
————————————
Hermes was beginning to wonder if Zeus could think up a worse punishment than his current circumstances. Dionysus tips his head back and chugs another flask of wine. “Want some?” he offers, for what must be the thousandth time.
Hermes sighs. “Yes.”
“Aha! Finally! The best of the best for you, my friend.” He holds out the flask and curtseys, sloshing wine over his tunic.
Hermes pinches the bridge of his nose. “Read the room,” he mutters.
“What?”
“I said thanks,” he lies. He takes a sip. The wine is incredible, better than any mortal’s best vintage.
“My dear flower, light in my eye, the sun to my sky...” Apollo recites.
Hermes wants to scream. His son is probably miserable, cast into Tartarus or locked in a cell somewhere, and here he is, listening to Apollo memorizing lines for Hyacinthus, who’s probably so deep under the Lethe’s amnesia that he won’t remember who the god is. He takes another sip of wine. “Dionysus!”
“Yes?” Dionysus laughs.
Hermes grits his teeth. Intoxication is no help to Dionysus’s ability to understand the severity of the situation. “Promise me something.”
“Anything.”
“You’ll undo the effects of your alcohol on me before we get to Hadestown.”
“Sure.”
“Excellent. Now, do you have something stronger?”
“‘Course! Here.”
Hermes drinks. The alcohol burns his throat. He forces himself not to cough.
“Too strong?”
“Mm.” Hermes clears his thoat. “Not at all.” He finishes the flask.
—————————————
“Show yourself!” Achilles shouts. Patroclus stands back to back with him, armed with a pickaxe from the mines.
“I don’t think you’re in much of a place to be making demands.” The voice echoes from every corner of the greenhouse.
“Funny, I disagree.” Achilles whirls and throws his pick axe through the man’s chest. His body dissolves as if it’s made of smoke.
“Could’ve questioned him,” Patroclus says.
“What would we ask? ‘Who sent you?’ Take a wild guess.”
Patroclus shrugs. “There’ll be more of them.”
“So we don’t let our guard down. Let’s get going, Pa-“
“Argh!” He yelps.
“Patroclus!” Achilles whirls. A bowman from the roof. “To cover!” He grabs his lover’s hands and drags him to the nearest wall, out of the range of the archer’s arrows.
Patroclus clutches his shoulder. “If I hadn’t moved, that would’ve gone through my chest,” he states. “Warn Persephone. I’m alright.”
Achilles nods. “Keep your eyes open. There’s no way he’s alone. I won’t be long.”
He runs along the wall. He glances up at the ceiling. The archer is gone. He runs for the exit, then the entrance to Persephone’s greenhouse. An arrow strikes the ground at his feet. He dives in the door and slams it behind him. “We were followed,” he announces.
“So we discovered.” Persephone’s vines wrap the ground and up the wall, where a man dangles by his wrists. “Orpheus is-“
The door opens, Patroclus stands in its frame. Achilles runs to his side. “I told you to stay behind.”
“There’s more of them. They were going for a better shot on me, so I ran.”
“Your arm...”
“Is fine.” Patroclus answers. “Where’s Orpheus?”
“Here! A hand, one of you?” Eurydice calls from the opposite wall. “He’s hit.” They both run for Orpheus.
Persephone’s captive screams. “I’ll ask again. Who sent you?”
“Hades!” The man yelps. “Please!”
“I knew it,” she snarls. “His orders. What were they? Be exact.”
“Any man who kills Orpheus won’t have to work for the rest of eternity.”
“How many are after him?”
“I don’t know!” He cries. “Please!”
She tightens the vines around his throat and the man vanishes into ashes.
“Is he breathing?” She calls to Orpheus’s aids.
“Yes,” Patroclus replies. “He’s only been hit in the leg.”
Persephone nods. “I’ll hold the doors.”
Orpheus groans. “I know, I know,” Eurydice murmurs. “You’ll be okay.”
“I need to get the arrow out. Give him something to bite down on,” Patroclus tells her.
She stuffs a piece of cloth into his mouth. “Bite.” He does.
“Hold him down.” Orpheus screams. “Almost there. And it’s out. Hold pressure. Right here.” He guides Eurydice’s hands over the wound. “Press hard, don’t let up,” he tells her. “I know it hurts, Orpheus. Focus on Eurydice.”
“O-okay.” Orpheus chokes out.
“Achilles, we’ll need strips of fabric. One of the blankets should be fine. Tie a tourniquet above his wound. Apply pressure. The bleeding will stop.”
Achilles begins to tear a blanket. “Your shoulder, Pat.”
“I’m alright.” He presses a hand against it.
“No, there’s an arrow through your arm. And love, that’s what Hades has on us. If you die, you’re stuck on the banks of the Styx forever. I’m afraid... we’d never see each other again. An eternity without you... I don’t want to imagine it.”
“Okay, okay. Give me a piece of that blanket.” Achilles does. “When I take the arrow out, it’ll bleed. If anything happens, I’d recommend you leave me behind. Hades might let me live, if I say I’ll give him information and you won’t be burdened to carry me.”
“You know I won’t leave you here.”
“Yeah, I thought that might be fruitless.”
“You’re gonna want to see this,” Persephone calls. Achilles stands.
“I’ll be right back,” he tells Patroclus.
“Look.” Persephone points at the roof. An arrow whizzes and the bowman standing on it falls. “Someone wants us to make it out.”
“Or someone wants to take us alive,” he says, grimly.
Something drifts down from overhead. A scrap of fabric, maybe. It lands at Persephone’s feet. A cloth carnation. Beneath it, a note: “Hermes is coming.”

Don’t Look Back
Pairing: Kristanna
Rated: M
Word Count: 2,945/AO3
Summary: After their separation is prophesied by a strange woman, Kristoff goes on a quest to the underworld to save Anna.
Author’s Note: Hi everyone! This is my contribution for Kristanna Week Day 5 - Blue! I wasn’t originally going to write a spin on the Orpheus and Eurydice myth for this day, but the idea came to me last night and I just had to write it out. I also apologize if I messed up any of the mythology, it’s been nearly 10 years since I last read this story and I kind of adapted it to suit the needs of the fic. I’m not really crazy about it because it’s a little different than all of the other stuff I’ve written but what am I gonna do? I hope you enjoy it despite it's weirdness!! (Sorry for all the asterisks, tumblr is finnicky with language and tags) *Please note that this fic is rated M for light s*xual content and temporary character d*ath*
There were few things rarer in the world than true love, and Anna and Kristoff had been lucky enough to find it with each other. In the beginning, they hid their feelings, and for far too long, they danced around the possibility of being together. When they finally came together, what grew between them was beautiful and rare.
In no time at all, they were blissfully married, and spending nearly every waking moment together. On this particular day, they’d gone for a stroll in the park, as the weather was getting colder by the day, and soon being outside would become unbearable. They walked hand in hand, bundled up in their winter attire, and walked along a wooded path. For such a brisk day, there were plenty of people out and about - children and families, joggers, dog walkers. They chatted about their upcoming plans and current events as they walked, damp leaves crunching beneath their shoes. Just as they were getting ready to leave, a wiry grey-haired woman approached them.
“There is very bad energy here,” the old woman warned, eyes widened with fear. “You will not last together.”
“Excuse me?” Kristoff asked, wrapping a protective arm around Anna’s shoulders.
“You’ll be torn apart,” she hissed and waved her hands around manically, before wandering up to another unsuspecting group of people.
“What does she know?” Anna scoffed, rolling her eyes.
He wasn’t the superstitious type, but there was something about what the woman said that managed to rub him the wrong way. “That was...strange.”
She looked up at him, and frowned. “Are you actually worried?”
“No,” he lied, though it was useless - Anna was exceptional at reading his face.
“Nothing can tear us apart, my love,” she promised him, stroking his cheek with her soft, delicate fingers. “Nothing can come between us. Especially not a crazy old lady in a park.”
She’d said it with such confidence that he was able to temporarily brush off the overwhelming sense of doom that the old woman had managed to stir up in him. It wasn’t until they got home that evening that the anxiety returned. He normally kept a calm and level head, but losing Anna was his greatest fear and the sheer thought of it was enough to make his stomach turn. He was quiet throughout dinner as she blathered away and she didn’t bring up his unusual silence until they were lying on the couch.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” he sighed.
“Something is bothering you.”
“I don’t really want to talk about it.”
“You don’t have to,” she assured him. “But I’m all ears if you change your mind.”
“It’s not a big deal, I just need to relax.”
“How about a bath?” she suggested, squeezing his arm. “I can’t think of anything more relaxing than that.”
He smiled at the thought of it and just a little while later, they were submerged in a tub of warm water and bubbles, her bare back pressed up against his solid chest. He pressed kisses to her neck and her ear, caressing her breasts with one hand and slipping his other hand to tease the sensitive area between her legs all while she giggled and moaned from his touch. They moved from the tub to their bed after they pruned up, eager to please each other and put the stress of the day behind them. It was so easy for him to get lost in her bright blue eyes as she looked up at him with adoration, biting her lip and digging her nails into his back as he thrust into her.
Long after they were both satisfied, he cradled her in his arm and she rested her head on his shoulder, drawing lazy circles on his bare chest.
“I hope you feel better now,” she mumbled. “Because I know I do.”
“I do,” he confirmed, pressing a kiss to her hairline. “Taking a bath together was a great idea.”
“We should do it more often,” she smiled, looking up at him through her eyelashes. “You should get some sleep.”
He watched as her eyes fluttered closed and her body relaxed against his, and he sighed contently, closing his own eyes and drifting away.
He didn’t remember waking up the following morning, but the sunlight streaming in through their curtains had created a weird, hazy effect. Just as he had expected, she was still lying next to him, practically glowing in the morning light.
“I have to go,” she said suddenly.
“You should stay,” he whispered in her ear, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her close.
She managed to free herself from his grasp and turned to face him, dragging her hand from his face to his chest and pressing a soft kiss to his lips. “You know that I have to go, but I’ll be back soon and we can pick up from where we left off.”
After one last passionate kiss, she crawled out of bed and he propped himself up on his elbows, watching as she padded across the bedroom floor. She looked back to give him a flirtatious smile before closing the bathroom door. He didn’t even know where she had to go, but with a grin of his own, he flopped back onto the pillows and tossed his arm over his face, wondering how he’d gotten so lucky.
Until she didn’t come home.
Though their separation had been prophesied by the lady in the park, his heart was shattered and he was overcome with grief - god, the grief was unbearable. He’d lost his beautiful wife, the most important person in his life, the person he truly loved and who loved him back, unconditionally. He cried over her pale body for days, wishing that his tears would bring her back but knowing deep down that his sadness had no power in determining her fate.
But, he’d heard of someone who did have that kind of power - the god of the underworld, Hades, who had a penchant for collecting souls. If the mythology was true, then there had to be a way to find the underworld and convince Hades that Anna needed to be earthside with him. They belonged together, and there was no one - human or god - who could tell him otherwise.
He did as much research as he could, scouring books and maps, trying to figure out a way to get to the underworld - to get Anna back. He didn’t care how far he had to travel, or whether it was by land or by sea, but he had to get to her.
So he did, setting off on a long journey across the world before finally coming across the dark cave that had been described in every piece of literature he’d gotten his hands on. A discarded boat on the banks of the river attracted his attention, and he climbed in, picking up the ore in his hands and rowing towards the cave. As he rowed, the water beneath the boat changed from translucent and blue to an oily, black sludge.
When he finally descended into the dark cavern, he found that he was no longer rowing the boat, but that control of the water had been taken over by a force behind him. He turned around and there was a tall, gangly man standing at the back of the boat, guiding them through the rough waters. He could tell from first glance that the man was not human, but that was to be expected - he was going to the underworld, after all. He’d read about this particular man; a ferryman who escorted the souls of the d*ceased to the underworld, though he certainly wasn’t escorting the d*ad in this case.
The journey to the underworld was a long and dangerous one, and he knew they had reached a crucial area when a fog began to form across the sides of the cavern - souls. Everything that surrounded them was d*ad; shriveled leaves and withered trees shrouded in darkness. Finally, the boat collided with a dock and Kristoff turned around to find that the ferryman was gone. He took a deep breath before climbing out of the boat, more determined than ever to find Hades and bring his wife home.
Being surrounded by death created an unsettling, eerie feeling. Kristoff could feel the hairs on the back of his neck stand up as he wandered aimlessly through the darkness, surrounded by the foggy mist. Despite the fact that he was most definitely alone, he didn’t feel alone. He felt as if he were walking along a busy sidewalk in a major city, dodging tourists and workers, rushing to their destination.
Finally, he came upon a looming, black castle and he knew that he had made it to his own destination. With all of the determination that he could muster up, he marched toward it; through the gates, down the cobblestone path, and into the palace that belonged to the god of the underworld. Hades had a bride of his own, and together they sat in matching thrones at the end of the long hallway.
“You’re not welcome in the underworld, mortal,” Hades’ threatening voice boomed.
Kristoff was not going to take no for an answer; he hadn’t made it this far to give up. “I’m here for my wife and I refuse to leave without her.”
“You don’t get to make demands.”
“I need my wife,” he pleaded. “I can’t live without her. I won’t leave without her.”
The threatening creature moved to stand from his throne, but his wife held out her arm, which caused him to pause. She leaned toward him, her long, dark tresses moving in a fluid motion with her body. Her hand flexed over the distance between her mouth and his ear as she whispered to him. Kristoff gulped, unsure of what her actions meant, though he hoped it was an act of mercy.
When she finally pulled away, Hades mischievously narrowed his eyes. “How about we make a deal?”
“Anything,” Kristoff blurted desperately.
“You may have your wife back,” Hades offered, “But, you may not see her until you return to your realm. You will be guided by the ferryman and she'll be in your boat, and once you’ve reached the earthside, she’s yours. If you look back at her before you’ve reached the earthside, then she stays in the underworld permanently.”
“Deal,” he answered without hesitation.
When he blinked, he was back in the boat. He didn’t remember leaving the castle or walking back through the depths of the underworld. He was petrified to look anywhere but straight ahead, and when the boat started moving, he called out to her. “Anna, are you here?”
Miraculously, she responded. “Yes, honey, I’m here.”
Hearing her voice nearly caused him to combust - god, how he missed the sound of her voice. It was almost enough for him to lose control and turn around. “I need to see you.”
“Don’t turn around,” Anna begged. “If you look back at me, then I can’t come home with you. Don’t look back.”
“How can I trust that this isn’t a trick?” he cried. “I need to know that you’re here.”
“I’m here,” she promised. “Keep your eyes closed until it’s safe.”
“How will I know when it’s safe?”
“I’ll tell you. Don’t open them until I say so, okay? Promise me that you won’t open your eyes until I tell you to.”
“I promise,” he agreed, trembling from the stress. He closed his eyes, unsure of what he would do if he lost her yet again. The one thing he was certain of was that he couldn’t live without her. If he had to take drastic measures to ensure they would be together, then he would do so.
For a long time, the boat ride was quiet. In the short span of time that he’d spent in the underworld, he managed to forget how long and treacherous the journey there was. It was difficult to resist the temptation of turning around and checking to make sure that the god of death had made good on his promise, that the woman he loved was actually in the boat with him.
After what felt like an eternity, she spoke again. “We’re almost there, but don’t look back yet.”
“Okay,” he said, hardly able to hear her over the sound of his pounding heart.
Suddenly, a pair of arms came down around his neck, and soft lips were pressing a kiss to his cheek. He didn’t dare to open his eyes - he couldn’t risk it. If this was some kind of test or trick from the god of the underworld and he opened his eyes, she’d be gone for good.
“You can open your eyes,” she said, pressing her cheek against his. “We’re safe.”
“Are you sure?”
“We’re back on earth,” she assured him. “We’re here, together. I’m alive.”
“Are you sure?” he repeated, his voice strained. “Because if you’re not sure, we’re both going to end up back in the underworld.”
“Touch me,” she begged, freeing her grasp from his neck and bringing his arm up to her face. “It’s me. I’m real.”
Through his touch, he recognized her features; her perfectly smooth skin, the slope of her petite nose, and her plump, kissable lips. “It’s really you?”
“It’s me,” she confirmed with a sniffle. “You can look.”
He slowly blinked his eyes open and the first thing that he noticed was that the water beneath the boat had transformed from black sludge to clear and blue. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see strands of her brilliant red hair, and he heaved a sigh of relief; she was here. He hadn’t been tricked by Hades.
She climbed onto his lap and cupped his jaw with her hands before leaning her forehead against his. “You saved me.”
His arms reflexively wrapped around her waist, pulling her closer, and he momentarily forgot how to breathe; she was alive, and he was touching her, and god, she was even more gorgeous than he remembered. “Oh, Anna, I missed you.”
“I missed you, too,” she whimpered, tears cascading down her cheeks. “So much.”
He could feel a lump growing in his throat as he fought to hold back his own tears. “I’m never letting you out of my sight again.”
“Good,” she sobbed, burying her face in the crook of his neck. He placed a hand on the back of her head, and gently rubbed her back, the boat bobbing from side to side beneath them. When she finally looked up at him with reddened eyes and tear-stained cheeks, she asked, “Can we go home now?”
And then he awoke with a start - he was in their bedroom, unsure of if he had ever really left it. Was it really possible that he dreamt the entire thing? He wasn’t sure - it had felt so real.
Anna was leaning over him, brushing his hair out of his face. “What’s wrong?”
“You’re okay?”
“Of course I’m okay,” she laughed. “Why wouldn’t I be okay?”
He blinked rapidly as he looked around the room, and sure enough, they were still tangled up in their sheets like they had been when they fell asleep the night before. He could feel her body pushed up against him and he knew she was real, but he couldn’t shake the nightmare that had plagued him a few moments prior.  “I don’t know...I think I had a bad dream.”
“Do you want to talk about it?”
“You d*ed,” he answered shakily. “And I went to the underworld to save you.”
“Oh,” she said, furrowing her eyebrows together. “Did you?”
“I did.”
“That’s good,” she smiled. “You’re a hero.”
“It felt so real, though. It was so vivid, and colorful, and...real. I don’t even know where the entire underworld thing came from - I haven’t read anything related to mythology since I was in, like, high school.”
“Our dreams don’t always make sense,” she assured him. “Last night I dreamt that I was late to take a test, which is funny because I haven’t taken a test since I was in college.”
“It’s just...I don’t know what I’d do if I lost you, Anna, I really don’t.”
“Well, you don’t have to worry about that because I’m not going anywhere. And if I do die first, I’m going to come back and haunt you.”
“I wouldn’t expect anything less from you,” he chuckled. “I think that lady in the park yesterday really freaked me out.”
“Oh, you’re gonna get a kick out of this; there was an article about her in the local paper this morning - she got arrested for harassing people in the park. It’s not the first time she’s been arrested for it, either.”
“Really?”
“Oh, yeah, I can even show you the article.” She moved to grab her phone, but he placed his hand over her arm, stopping her.
“It’s okay, I believe you,” he said in a low voice, diverting his eyes away from her.
“It’s really bothering you, huh?”
“A little,” he confessed with a sigh. “It’s such a scary thought.”
“I promise, I’m not going anywhere.” She smiled coyly before sliding her leg over his waist and pushing herself on top of him, so they were lying chest to chest. “Even if you change your mind and decide that you want to get rid of me.”
He reached up and tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear. “I definitely don’t want to do that.”
Her lips ghosted against his as she whispered, “Then we have nothing to worry about.”
