As we enter into the final hours of 2024, we want to celebrate what a wonderful year it has been for Tiva fanfiction! This project ( @tiva-challenges ) started in the wake of the unbelievable news that our beloved characters, Tony and Ziva, are finally getting their own, well-deserved SPINOFF! Our initial goal with these challenges was to help keep the fandom active and excited as we wait patiently (or not so patiently) for the release of the show, and in that, I'd say we have succeeded! I think I can speak on behalf of all fanfiction authors when I say: Thank you to everyone who read, commented, and otherwise interacted with our fics this year! It truly means the world and inspires us to keep creating!

As usual I’m starving for Tiva scenes. And recently I realized one could find “Tiva” scenes in other episodes! That’s currently what I’m doing!

Let me tell you about 11x08:

In this episode someone is driving Tony to Quantico since he doesn’t have any car due to the car crash in 10x22. (I personally think this shows how hard it is for him to move on from the previous time, an implicit reference to Ziva). Anyway, in 11x08 Mcgee assumes that a lady has been driving Tony to the crime scene, he talks about it with Abby. Later on, Gibbs assigns Tony to go talk to a magnificent woman (once again to cheer up Tony). However, later on McGee finds out Tony has been taking public transports all along, which he notes is weird for Tony.

Finally, Tony and Mcgee end up in front of a church, that Tony apparently knows a lot about! Here is the scene:

Reverend Miller: Anthony! What are you doing here? Your meeting’s not until tonight.

Tony: Reverend Miller, I, um

Reverend: Bringing a new member?

Tony: Um.. He’s thinking about it. A little gun-shy. McGee, the Rev.

Rev: (to mcgee) please join us, it’s a very safe place. All are welcome

(Reverend goes away, Mcgee turns to Tony)

Mcgee: Tony, what’s going on? Do you have a drinking problem?

Tony: (laughing) No. No I just… (very seriously) I joined this men’s support group. Meets in the church hall 2 nights a week.

Mcgee: you serious?

Tony: Mm-hmm. I know it…it doesn’t sound like me, but… (sighs) with the past year, I just…wanted to shake things up a little bit. Meet some new people. This guy at the gym told me about the group, and I thought it sounded like a good idea. And it..it is fun. (Mcgee’s in disbelief) the Rev drove me to Quantico the other morning. Interesting guy. He’s helping me being less judgmental.

(Tony walks away, while Mcgee stands once again in disbelief )

Let me rephrase it, Tony went twice a week to a group support in a church, trying to move on and to accept the fact that Ziva left him. At the beginning of 11x09, he even talks alone about a woman he apparently met. And as another agent is doing her stuff, she tells him she hasn’t been listening, but tells him to start over in order to listen to him. Then he litterly begs her to have a reaction to what he said, to be at least “sarcastic”!

Now this is a lonely man. This is a lonely man missing his partner, his best friend, the woman he’s in love with. And so people, Gibbs, Mcgee, other NCIS agent try to pay more attention to him, to listen to him, to give him work he’s supposed to like (Gibbs telling him to go talk to a lady he finds beautiful) so that he feels less lonely.

Hence this is the reason why you can see, even after Ziva’s gone, how much she means to him. One could call it an “almost Tiva scene”.

And you know everytime Tony felt bad, Ziva tried to do her best to cheer him up, to make him laugh, to bring him back to his normal self. That’s the reason why I think if she knew how lonely he was feeling, she would have just hold him in her arms. Had she known how lonely he felt, she might have come back.

A/N: Tony and Ziva getting distracted at a crime scene, tbh, the only thing I knew when I started writing this was the Attenborough line, whatever happened after that was completely out of my hands

“That’s unusual,” Tony said looking at the dead marine’s corpse which was practically covered in ladybugs.

“Not really,” McGee said casually.

Tony pursed his lips. “Those are ladybugs, Magoo, not maggots.”

“Yeah,” McGee replied undisturbed. “The weather’s getting warmer.” He crouched down and inspected a plant next to the body. “It’s full of aphids, ladybugs love aphids.”

Tony stared at him blankly. “Are you moonlighting as David Attenborough’s assistant now that you’re no longer writing about us?”

McGee stood up, opened and closed his mouth, then pointed in the direction of the van. “I forgot my gloves.”

Tony grabbed him by the collar and pulled him back. He nodded at Ziva. “You’re the book worm, has he published anything new about us?”

Ziva stepped in closer and stared down McGee. “I don’t know.” She narrowed her eyes. “Have you?”

“I, erm.” McGee swallowed hard, then recovered and shook himself loose from Tony’s grip. “I have not published anything new about you.”

McGee’s sudden confidence, triggered Tony’s suspicion. “You’re playing some linguistic game of semantics, aren’t you?” He pulled at McGee’s lapels, then roughly patted them until they lay flat. “You’re confusing Ziva, you know how Ziva gets when words confuse her.”

Ziva sent Tony an icy glare, and when he said, “See,” she slapped his arm.

“You’re not that interesting,” McGee said, with a forced smile, and walked off.

Tony scoffed. “Not that…who does  McPopular think he is, anyway? We should give him something to write about.”

Ziva rolled her eyes. “That is the opposite of what we want to do.”

Tony stared at McGee who was loitering near the van, occasionally sending them a furtive glance. He snapped his fingers. “We should make out in front of him now that he’s still nervous.”

Ziva stared at Tony blankly. “I am not making out with you next to a dead body covered in ladybugs.”

Tony frowned and glanced at the dead marine. “Can’t be too difficult to get rid of them, they fly, right?”

With extreme restraint, she said his name.

“You’re right.” He pretended to think deeply, then said, “The bullpen.” He grabbed her shoulders, and raised his eyebrows. “Gibbs’ desk.”

Ziva avoided his gaze, her teeth barely grazing her lip, and fiddled with her earring.

Tony let go of her shoulders. “What was that?”

“What was what?”

“That glint in your eye?”

“There was no…” Ziva looked everywhere but at him, and shrugged with exaggeration. “It was probably just a reflection of the sun.”

He grinned widely. “You’ve thought about making out with me on Gibbs’ desk, haven’t you?”

She suddenly stood taller and looked him straight in the eye. “No, I have not.”

Tony frowned. “Wait,” he said, and cocked his head, “are you playing a game of semantics now?”

Ziva looked at him innocently. “According to you, I don’t know what that means.”

Tony chuckled. “You know I start blabbering to get people to say things they don’t want to say.”

She raised an eyebrow, and went back to fiddling with her earring. “Is that why you asked me to make out with you?”

“No, my mind was still extremely focused on annoying McGee when I asked that.”

“And now?”

“Now…it’s very focused on …the thought of making out with you.”

“On Gibbs’ desk?”

“I asked you first,” Tony dodged her question.

“I already answered.”

“Right,” Tony said, and tried to stall for time. He looked her up and down, which didn’t help his confusion. “Not recently?"

Ziva’s face tightened. “Oh, you do not find me attractive anymore.”

“I,” he said with hesitation and ran a hand through his hair. “That’s not what I meant.”

He glanced away, trying to quiet the nervous energy running through his veins. With a frown he focused on McGee, who was writing on a notepad, occasionally looking at them. “Is McGee taking notes on us?”

“Tony,” Ziva said calmly, and placed a hand on his cheek to get him to look at her. “Focus.”

He stared at her mouth and tried to remember where his mind had trailed off. “It’s different now.” He glanced to his right, spotting the dead marine, and huffed out a breath. “Do you really want to have this conversation here?”

“I did not start this conversation.”

“Fine.” He took a deep breath, and leaned in closer so he could lower his voice. “Making out with you on his desk would be all kinds of hot, and exciting, and something I would remember on my deathbed no matter how demented I become, but.” He shook his head lightly as his brows squished together briefly. “It’s just…not worth it anymore.”

Ziva tugged on her earring. “You mean, possibly getting caught?”

“No,” Tony breathed out, and briefly closed his eyes. “I mean possibly ruining our…friendship.”

“Oh.” Ziva blinked rapidly, and looked away, at a loss for words.

“Yeah,” Tony said dejectedly, and stood up straight, clenching his jaw.

As the awkward silence dragged on, Tony dropped his head briefly, and moved to get back to work right as her hand reached out to his chest, not quite touching, but enough to stop him in his tracks.

“You were right,” she said.

With a flutter in his stomach, yet as casually as possible, he said, “I always am.” He cocked his head, and stared at her intently, feeling the mood shift in his favor. “About what, specifically?”

Ziva inhaled deeply while trying to avoid his probing stare. With a quick scan that there was nobody within hearing distance, she hesitantly said, “I have thought about making out with you…in the bull pen…on your desk.” The intensity of his look and silence were too much to bear, and she continued against her better judgment. “And my desk…the elevator.” She shrugged casually and waved a hand. “The men’s room.”

His mouth went dry, and he resisted the urge to touch her. “Recently?”

“Well.” She wiped at her hair, even though it was still neatly contained in a bun. “Not since you stopped wearing your shoulder holster.”

“I thought you hated my shoulder holster?” Tony asked confused.

“It is distracting, Tony,” Ziva said, voice laced with a tinge of desperation.

“Oh, like your yellow blouse, with the …” He drew an imaginary line on his chest and bit his lip.

Distant voices drifted towards them on the wind, and reminded them, once again, that this really was neither the place nor time for a conversation like this.

“Perhaps,” Ziva started, and licked her lips, “you should come over tonight, for dinner, to, erm, discuss taking revenge on McGee.”

He grinned widely. “Sounds like a plan.”

“Of course, we would need to practice making out, I don’t like making out in front of people.”

Tony frowned, remembering the times they had been undercover. “Could’ve fooled me.”

At her raised eyebrows, he simply said, “Oh.” He glanced to his left, to check on their approaching co-workers. Leaning in, he said in a warm voice, “We can practice as long as you need to feel completely comfortable, whether that’s an hour, or a week.” He glanced at her lips, then got lost in her eyes. “A year, or even a decade…or five.”

The NCIS franchise continues to expand—but not every show can last nearly as long as the mothership. Hawai’i, currently in its third season, will be ending with the May 6 episode.

“I was shocked” by the news of its cancellation, NCIS star Rocky Carroll tells TV Insider. “Less than two weeks ago, I was doing a talk show with Vanessa Lachey and LL COOL J. We were all sitting around celebrating being a part of the NCIS universe. You never know what the motivating factors are, but I’m hoping that those characters, because we still have the mothership as we call it, we still have NCIS: Sydney, and who knows, those characters may turn up. I mean, LL COOL J’s character came from Los Angeles and was in Hawai’i. So who’s to say that Vanessa Lachey’s character wouldn’t show up somewhere in the NCIS universe again?”

There are at least two more series coming, the Origins prequel about a younger Gibbs (played by Austin Stowell, with Mark Harmon narrating) and Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo reprising their roles of Tony and Ziva in an untitled spinoff. “I’m thrilled about [the expansion], and I think it’s a real testament to the staying power and the commitment of CBS Paramount to have this show be sort of the staple that we now have a brand that’s expanding,” Carroll says. “It’s like the Marvel universe now. New audiences, new generations of audiences can now have their show that they can say, ‘Yeah, I’ve been with it since season one,’ like the diehards from NCIS who are 22 years in now.”

With Carroll playing the director of the agency, while neither Tony nor Ziva remains with NCIS, it would be quite easy for him to appear in a video check-in, right? “It’s funny you should mention it. I just did a podcast with Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo, and we had a chat about that, and I said, ‘Who knows? Sometimes the director may need to come in and check in on you kids because you’re on the other side of the world here,'” shares Carroll. “That would be kind of fun. Video check-in would be nice. I’d like to see their faces when Vance just walks into the room.”

But is there a spinoff he’d like to see in the franchise? He points out that there are divisions of the agency that have been introduced, like the REACT team. “The thing that made NCIS so interesting to begin with is [creator] Don Bellisario picked a federal agency that most people had no idea what NCIS stood for or what it was,” Carroll notes. “There’s all these other parts of this federal agency that you could focus on as opposed to just NCIS: Costa Rica—which wouldn’t be bad. I wouldn’t mind having Vance’s retirement job being a director in a small office in Costa Rica somewhere.”

Not every attempt at a spinoff has been a success; Los Angeles Season 4 introduced Red, the mobile unit, but that wasn’t ordered to series. “There’s never any guarantee,” according to Carroll. “But the universe has this solid footing now that you can take a chance, take a leap of faith, and say, ‘Well, let’s try it and see what happens.’ You know that the universe is still going to be safe, still going to exist.”

After all, NCIS is still going, even three seasons after its lead, Mark Harmon, exited. “There were star-driven shows in the ’70s and the ’80s. It was the name above the title and then the show.” Carroll recalls. “But now what CBS had done—and Harmon was a big factor in this, too, he always wanted the agency to be the star of the show. And CBS has been successful with other shows like CSI; once Billy Petersen left CSI, people thought, ‘Well, he was the main character behind it,’ but the show still had life after that. Because it was about the agency. And I think that’s one of the things that CBS does pretty much better than anybody else.”

so I’ve been listening to as the world caves in like over and over this week idk why it’s just my jam this week, BUT

I was wondering if toby and his s/o (me. obvi.) did end up somehow live through an “end of the world” scenario do you think toby would go all loverboy on them, or would he be too shocked to process it and just go on with his life as normal.

NOW. I wanna clarify on that last part.

I feel like he can do this in two ways,

A. intentionally.

because you’re both going out in the most normal way possible. him sharpening his axes while you sit in the living room or something literally while they’re about to drop the bomb. or you both watching a movie cuddled up together pretending nothings wrong. It’s natural, it’s raw, there’s no meaning and yet so much at the same time.

B. Just spur of the moment, “this isn’t happening.”

It’s kinda the same thing, except he is internally panicking. existential dread as you both sit on the couch in your final moments, in complete and utter silent dread.

instead of giving you a tighter hold than usual, he just stares ahead, and you can practically hear his thoughts “it’s a false alarm, this isn’t happening. no way this is fucking happening right now.”

OOH INTERESRING!! okay I think it would be kind of sort of a mixture of the two

I don’t know if you’ve ever seen the movie “don’t look up” but I think that the ending dinner scene would kind of sort of align with how Toby would react in a situation like this

if you haven’t seen it - brief rundown: comet is going to hit earth and wipe out humanity, there is literally nothing the cast can do at this point it’s inevitable and it’s happening in like 10 minutes. so what do they do? they sit down and have dinner, make small talk and say what they’re grateful for - acting almost as if it’s just another dinner. using this comfortable, familiar situation as a way to negate fear before they’re all completely wiped to smithereens. accepting it, and yet ignoring it all at the same time.

I think Toby would react quite similarly. mostly because he wouldn’t want you to leave this earth panicked and choking on your own tears. so, he’d be shitting his own pants internally, but he’d push it all down in the hopes of getting to have one last good moment with you.

he’ll cook dinner for you, letting you help out here and there and listening to all of your favourite songs while you do so. share one last meal with you, before retiring to the sofa to snuggle up and watch the last episode of that show you had been meaning to finish. his grip on you is tighter, and you can feel him tremble, but he won’t say a thing about it. he’ll just pull you in close, press kisses into your hair and tell you how grateful he is to have you. how lucky he was to have met you.

he’d tell you that he’s sorry he never got to marry you, that he would’ve if he could’ve. that there’s so many things he wishes he could’ve done for you

so, you’ll have to shut him up before he starts crying
