Movie Review | What a Honeymoon (Franco, 1980)

Thought this would be a good one to wash away the taste of Downtown Heat and its low energy non-thrills. Truth be told, like many of Jess Franco's films, this is pretty low energy as well, and you'd think that would be a weird fit for a mystery/adventure/comedy hybrid. But if anything, the flimsiness of the affair is a big part of its charm. This really is just Franco goofing around with some of his regulars in a tropical-looking setting and piecing together enough scenes of story and laffs onto a pretty barebones plot. I'm not sure whether Franco actually went to Central or South America or whether the fictional republic of "Bananas" was really just the same tropical-looking parts of Spain where she shot most of his other movies, but the vibes here or of a fun and relaxing vacation.

While I wouldn't recommend this to anyone as a good place to start in Franco's filmography, that quality has made this grow into arguably one of my favourites of his work. It helps that like always, Lina Romay is extremely charming, and gets to use comedic talents that his more serious movies don't always have room for. This might be Romay at her most adorable, especially when she puts on a cute hat. "Jungle fashion", as she calls it.

It also helps that unlike some of Franco's other movies, the laffs here are intentional, and the flimsiness seems to be part of the joke. Like the robot self-destructing by having somebody step into the frame and smashing it with a mallet. Or instead of Romay being scared by a leopard, it's a guy growling through a megaphone. Or the gold mine at the end clearly being a room covered in tin foil. (The flimsiness also helps the movie's baffling use of yellowface go down easier, as none of the characters look remotely Chinese.) Franco himself offers an amusingly unconvincing death scene.

And listen, a lot of these jokes are extremely stupid, but when you have Romay mistaking a corpse for her husband not wanting to sleep with her, and mistaking his account of his rescue for gay group sex, or when the movie decides to end on a "women, amirite" joke, sorry, I'm laughing.
