#what BJ and Peg have is not comphet or whatever

Genuine question alert ! Where you talking about specific characters in your 'bastardize the female character to male the male character gay' post?
yes! I could cite a ton of different instances but that post specifically is about BJ and Peg Hunnicutt, who are very in love and have a healthy relationship and a daughter, but Peg is often shoved aside or otherwise bastardized/villainized to push Hunnihawk as a ship because people really dont want to acknowledge that BJ is married and in love
#im a Hunnihawk shipper myself btw but in the way where its poly and its Punnihawk#like. being in love with Peg is a significant facet of BJ's character#its foundational to him you dont have BJ without his love for his wife#and yet people will act like his marriage literally doesnt matter!#or they'll completely bastardize Peg#and turn her into a villain so they can just divorce them in fic so that BJ seems justified in abandoning his family#and it makes me real mad!#I really really hate the gay BJ headcanon because like. bi people exist#what BJ and Peg have is not comphet or whatever#BJ loves her legitimately and truly loves her#again I do ship him with Hawkeye! im a Hunnihawk shipper!#but I dont read him as gay at all he's bi in my reading of him#because his love for Peg is ESSENTIAL to his character#you cant take that away and still have BJ. he's an OC at that point#and it just. strikes me as biphobic frankly#to shove aside his clear love for Peg just to further a mlm ship#but yeah thats my rant#ive been in a mood about it today#I feel like im swinging a bat at a hornet's nest with this but im in a mood about it so I dont really care

🔥 bisexuality, in MASH or in fandom in general or just in life in general 0w0
In general, I meant what I said before, I think bisexuality is still seen in fandom as "not queer enough" (let's not get into bi characters in m/f relationships still being considered 'boring' or 'het' which, whatever).
But I'm putting the rest under a cut so. proceed at your own risk.
I genuinely don't understand the opposition to bi!BJ, because like. that literally means you can ship him with Hawkeye while also acknowledging his canon attraction to women (not just his wife, but also other women. See: Hanky Panky, War Co-respondent, his attraction to Lana Turner, saying he'd like Nurse Able if he wasn't married). It can only be a net gain!
and frankly. as a bi woman (and I'm not speaking for all of us or all bi people at all!), the past two years of having it be that he can only be repressed and gay has been incredibly invalidating and actually detrimental to my mental health. Like I try and laugh it off or just ignore it, but it's true.
But I guess that would then invalidate this whole thing that BJ can somehow only have ONE true love and it HAS to be Hawkeye. (I used to ship them a lot more strongly but fandom leaning so hard into the 'one true ending' actually majorly turned me off shipping them at allll.
And it happens to Margaret too. She has a lot of canon attraction to men, but it HAS to be comphet, it can't actually just be bisexuality.
Fandom be fighting demons, but those demons are just bisexuality.
AGAIN. I am ONLY speaking for myself and if anyone who read this far decides to come after me, that's on you because you read this post. I'm also not tagging it, so if people want to get mad, that's on them.
And also, I really don't care if there's a big contingent of fans who want BJ to be repressed and gay. I have friends who enjoy BJ goes to Maine and that's their prerogative, I'm glad they have so much content to enjoy! that's whatever to me. ship and let ship. it's more the whole narrative of it being 'accepted canon' or 'the default' and people who think he actually loves Peg getting shut down that I hate.
Finally, I know I'm obnoxious about having been here since 2018 but that's because I was shipping BJ/Hawk and the triad and enjoying Peg content two years before any of hte BJ goes to Maine stuff happened, and it's incredibly frustrating - much as I'm glad there's been an influx of fans, I've made several wonderful friends - to have people act like this is the only way, and that the fandom started in 2020. When I started writing Hunnihawk, there were less than 100 works in the tag. I wrote like 30 stories for them my first two years. That's why it matters. it doesn't have anything to do with bisexuality but it matters to me.
anyway thank you for the question, sorry for the mini rant.
#remember i said that last post would get me cancelled#well boy do i have a show for you#🔥#unpopular opinions

Hawkeye/BJ, and BJ for the character
Hawkeye/BJ| send me a ship and I will tell you:
when I started shipping it if I did: a little over a year ago during the MASH rewatch I was doing with my partner. For whatever reason, I hadn't even thought of it before then, but once I did, it was everywhere.
my thoughts: they're cute, they're stupid, they're idiots in love, and they're a hot mess. I have so many thoughts on them, and my opinions are changing constantly
What makes me happy about them: no matter if it's romantic or platonic, they really do care about each other. Their friendship isn't always healthy, but they care deeply and it shows.
What makes me sad about them: is it cheating to say the war? The whole show is sad and funny and sweet, and the sadness is kind of integral to the whole thing.
things done in fanfic that annoys me: giving BJ the emotional intelligence to figure things out on his own. I just don't think he'd get there without some sort of external help.
things I look for in fanfic: banter. BJ and Hawkeye have distinct voices, and I love when a writer gets them right. I also love pining, but that's just one of those things I've always looked for in fanfic for any fandom. Pining is my thing.
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: BJ/Peg and Hawkeye/Trapper. I'm also comfortable with Hawkeye ending up alone or with someone not in canon - it seems right for him. I'm also pretty down with a lot of other potential pairings for Hawkeye, but I like BJ/Peg (I also love BJ/Peg/Hawkeye).
My happily ever after for them: growing old, protesting Vietnam, providing healthcare for those in dire need through a free clinic, abortions, and HIV/AIDS care. I don't think they can come back from Korea and just do surgery - they will feel the need to make a difference.
who is the big spoon/little spoon: BJ seems like a big spoon kind of guy, but I also see Hawkeye just becoming an octopus in his sleep and then there are no spoons, just an incomprehensible tangle of limbs.
what is their favorite non-sexual activity: laughing. Anything that can make them laugh, from bad jokes to pranks. But the important part is the laughter.
BJ| Give me a character & I will tell you
One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon: I will never get over his complete failure of an apology in Period of Adjustment. He should've dealt with that shit better, and Hawkeye shouldn't have let it slide.
my OTP: Punnihawk because I want BJ with Hawkeye, but I don't want him to leave Peg.
my crossover ship: I have never considered a crossover pairing for BJ. I was mentally scrolling through shows in my head, and the one that amused me most was Wilson from House. I don't think I actually ship this, but they would be funny.
a headcanon fact: oh man, my headcanons are all over the place with BJ (and often conflicting). I guess one of my favorites is that I actually do think he lies. I think he realized that he's halfway across the world with a bunch of people he may never see again, and it's a chance to try out new things, so he lies a little because it doesn't feel like there will be any consequences. My favorite version of this would be lying to patients to try to connect with them better.
How I feel about this character: gosh I have so many feelings. I love him, I hate him, I want to pummel him with angst, I want to send him care packages that make him smile, I want him to figure his shit out and make Hawkeye happy.
All the people I ship romantically with this character: Peg, Hawkeye
My non-romantic OTP for this character: also Hawkeye
My unpopular opinion about this character: I don't know if this is unpopular, but I don't think he's gay. I used to be vehemently against this, but I've come to see the logic of the comphet/repression theory with him (and I do enjoy a Hunnicutt lavender marriage). I just don't feel it. I'm very on board with bisexual BJ.
Thanks for the ask! As always, I really enjoyed thinking about these things. Some specifics are starting to fade for me about all of my strong opinions about BJ, so it may be time for another rewatch. I think it's been almost a year now since I've done anything except watch some comfort episodes (A Night at Rosie's, my beloved).
