Last night's Christmas romcom on demand. Lifetime's The Christmas Setup. I thoroughly enjoyed this flick, and love that while the characters talk about their struggles as teenagers and coming out, both they and the people around them have completely normalized the fact that they're gay, and there's no hiding or shame implied. There's also a cool historical mystery, and I am a total sucker for those. We need many, many more non-straight mainstream films, stories, and television shows that affirm and celebrate love. But this is a good one for the collection. #loveislove #loveislovefortheholidays #maketheyuletidegay #wevealwaysbeenhere https://www.instagram.com/p/CJB4xYCFAeC/?igshid=ovv2mffl37ub

“Get thee to the Nunnery”
Women found a place to be educated in the classics from Latin, Greek, medicine, law and spirituality. She would experience autonomy not found in society neither among the aristocracy nor the working class breaking the patriarchal rules with Women becoming Prioress, Abbesses and Mother Superiors by not only having power over the women but also men. They controlled vast lands, ran hospitals, schools and businesses.
So in the beautiful freedom of learning and emotional/spiritual growth it is not surprising these intelligent, strong women also found love amongst their intellectual equals.
On International Women’s Day I celebrate the women who broke away from societal pressures and grew in spirit, soul and body as they chose a path to forge their way in a “man’s world” and in spite of all obstacles found love.
“Since I’ve had to be without your sweetest presence, I have not wished to hear or see any other human being, but as the turtle-dove, having lost its mate, perches forever on its little dried up branch, so I lament endlessly till I shall enjoy your trust again. I look about and do not find my lover — she does not comfort me even with a single word.
Indeed when I reflect on the loveliness of your most joyful speech and aspect, I am utterly depressed, for I find nothing now that I could compare with your love, sweet beyond honey and honeycomb, compared with which the brightness of gold and silver is tarnished. What more?”

This is everything to me! I’ve spent years researching lesbians throughout history for my Ancestry Series. Anne Lister is an inspirational trailblazer who lived her authentic self in dangerous times. I’ll be dropping pieces of my #WIP because “We have always been here”
God bless her for keeping diaries!!!

Historical lesbians: One dresses and acts as a man to have a relationship with the other. This was done so both women could live and be together without people murdering them
Y’all weirdos in 2020: Guess he was trans. #wevealwaysbeenhere
historical lesbian: [was forced into a straight relationship to keep herself safe and because throughout most of history women were considered property of a man and was not allowed to do anything without one]
y'all weirdos in 2019: guess she was bisexual 🤔

Early Colonial writer Anne Bradstreet had to have her brother in-law "assure" the readers that Anne completed all her wifely and household duties and only found time to write due to the fact she neglected things like sleep.
Every time I think we've come so far, I stumble across a quote like that and think of the thousands of women authors who find time to write before going to work, getting children up for school, waking in the middle of the night, putting timers on their computers at work...the list is as exhaustive as is the ways women need to steal time to write. It's no longer 1648 but I honor all the women authors "working to write".
Feel free to drop a note on how you find time to write and when. As I post this at 2 AM---Ironic.

5 colonial women I have come across repeatedly doing my ongoing research for the Ancestry Series on strong women who in spite of living in a strident patriarchal generation found ways to express themselves. Historically accurate fiction is important to me as I build a world where there are lesbians finding a way to live and love “because we’ve always been here”. These women were intellectually engaging, creative and brave. The lack of separation of church and state was oppressive. I appreciate the the women who reconcile their own faith whether it was through writings, discussions even espousing other belief systems. My third book draws on the “enlightenment” and philosophical differences that help found the United States of America. Blending storylines from today and our past shows the same courage, authenticity and love is love
