Another powerful work by Penda Diakité… . Denbaya means 'Family' in Bambara, my native language. The piece is a family portrait- but a unique one in the sense that they wear all their hardships, stereotypes, history and culture on themselves. It's an illustration that shows the bond and love of a family, despite being seen as 'other' to the world (if you look closely at the family portrait in the top left corner of the piece). The mother, the backbone of the family, is front and center, braiding her crying child's hair, and holding her baby. One of my favorite things about her is the third eye on her forehead, a representation of the strength of a woman's intuition. The background if this piece reads (in traditional bogolan/mud cloth pattern): Problem solver, and heroic. . Our current exhibition EYE TO EYE in now on view ’til the 7th of December. . Umar “FroHawkTwoFeathers” Rashid slays dragons & abolitionists in his quest to tell visual stories… He is bringing all that and more to Band of Vices’ EYE to EYE, opening this Saturday the 9th, 5pm-8pm… . Having recently shown in the dynamic exhibition PUNCH @JeffreyDeitchGallery & curated by @NinaChanel, Rashid will exhibit a few rare works from his collection… . “…Stylistically, Rashid alludes to Egyptian hieroglyphs, Native American hide paintings and ledger art, Persian miniature painting, and illustrated Spanish colonial manuscripts to name but a few. Rashid’s compelling cast of characters are diverse and often of mixed race and ethnicity. His world is not guided by simplistic dichotomies of white and black, master and slave, captor and captive, but challenges viewers to consider the range of humanity involved in a global empire. Thus, his people of color are just as likely to be heroes as villains, revealing the duplicity and complicity of these individuals but also acknowledging their agency as historical actors. The lengthy, sometimes humorous, titles of Rashid’s works often reference hip-hop song lyrics, urban expressions, and current events. The artist intentionally strives to bridge the gap between contemporary popular culture and “official” history, which often seems like a distant, untouchable past especially for many young people today. By making history relatable, Rashid reminds us of the cyclical nature of history and universality of the human condition. -Ellen Caldwell. .
